Professor Anita Hill promised herself she would speak about sexual assault for at least two years after her 1991 testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, hoping she would see government action on the issue by the end of that time.

Nearly 30 years later, Hill told a group at the Iowa Memorial Union that she was frustrated that the #MeToo movement, which began in 2017, did not bring about any meaningful political change during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault by a high-school classmate, psychology Professor Christine Blasey Ford.

“Even in this primary cycle, little or no attention has been given to what has been called a moment of reckoning back in 2017,” Hill said. “We have seemingly forgotten about the moment of reckoning, and candidates have not proposed plans for how they will address the issues raised in 2017 or 2018 with the Kavanaugh hearing.”

In 1991, Hill testified at the confirmation hearings of current U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, alleging Thomas sexually harassed her when she worked with him at the Education Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Former President George H.W. Bush nominated Thomas to the court.

“You think, ‘Oh, it’s just a rural area,’ but Iowa has a special beauty to it,” Merino said. “It has a special sense of place and time, and that makes it very inspiring.”

Iowa City’s “perspective of inspiration” influenced her award-winning novel, providing a universal setting that would reflect how she felt about the Midwest.

“This novel reflects my understanding of my American experience,” Merino said. “The meaning is linked with the Midwest and with Iowa.”

As the snow falls and temperatures drop, dog owners in Iowa City may struggle to find ways to keep their dog active in the winter months, a problem one area resident is attempting to solve.

Phil O’Brien, dog owner and Iowa City real-estate agent, has proposed the building of a canine community center for people to take their dogs to when outdoor conditions are less than ideal. The idea came to him last year during the polar vortex, when his dog was forced to stay inside.

The community center will have a full-service restaurant, an open supervised park area, an indoor track, a multipurpose facility, collaboration areas, a pool, and a retail area, O’Brien said.

The center will have staff who supervise the dogs, he said, while owners do other things.

Supervisors will be trained in first aid and be able to teach behaviors to the dog, such as how to sit better and follow commands, O’Brien added.

The collaboration spaces will be a pet-friendly section for people with home businesses that want an office space without having to leave their dog at home, he said.

The inclusion of a dining area aims to involve the community in the space as well, O’Brien said.

The Premio Nadal is the oldest literary prize that is awarded in Spain, dating back to 1944.

Originally from Spain, Merino said she finds the Midwest's culture distinctive from other places she has lived in the U.S. over the last 25 years.

Three years later, Meier DJs in bars around Iowa City including Summit and Eden. His latest challenge is trying to combine guitar and EDM. and place a greater emphasis on addressing complaints and the recognition of protected-class concerns.

“We’re going to take a close look at the recommendations … in order to ensure that we create the most inclusive and productive work environment possible,” Reardon said in a statement. “Conducting a thorough and deliberative review of our employment practices has already resulted in changes at the UI.” The report also stated that based on information collected from human resources, surveys and assessments, and employees indicated that the UI has “improved consistency in its handling of family and medical leave, recruiting, and disability accommodation, and university leadership is making efforts to recruit diverse employees.”

“The university committed significant time and resources to determine how best to

improve our workplace culture, and my hope is that the resulting changes make a real difference for faculty and staff,” said UI Chief Human Resources Officer and Associate Vice President Cheryl Reardon in a statement.

The Supervisor Training@ Iowa project will require 3,000 UI supervisors to complete a specially designed training and aims to create a comprehensive approach to supervisor development on campus, Reardon said.

While the training is in part influenced by the review results, Reardon said in a statement that it also satisfies concern from Staff Council, Faculty Senate, and other campus community members. University Human Resources will continue to develop skills in this area in accordance with the university’s strategic plan, she said.

“It’s up to us to maintain excellence and continuously

work toward improvement,” UI President Bruce Harreld said in a statement. “... As we work hard to draw and support the best students, let’s not forget to improve upon the qualities that draw and retain the best staff and faculty as well.”

The UI reported that more than 200 faculty and staff worked together to develop the training curriculum in fall 2019, which hones in on the importance of supervisors as well as best practices in recruitment; employee engagement; coaching; and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

UI Assistant Athletics Director of Compliance Kevin Zihlman participated in the pilot training in the fall, and said in a statement said he appreciated the reinforcement of policies and procedures in the training, and the awareness it raised about proper supervisor practices.

rassment. Although Biden called Hill to apologize in April 2019, Hill said the “statute of limitations” had passed for Biden to say sorry.

“What are you going to do today, and will you promise as leader of this country, to use all of your energy to address the problem as it happens and prevent it happening to another generation the way it has?”

Hill said. “That’s what I want to hear, not only from him, but from every one of [the presidential candidates].”

UI Lecture Committee member Jocelyn Roof said many college students became familiar with Hill’s 1991 testimony after Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings.

“I, like many in my generation, first learned Professor Hill’s story while I watched Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings,” Roof said. “When I listened to her testimony from over 25 years ago and compared it to the treatment of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, there was a pit in my stomach.”

A pool of 102 responded and were interviewed by the firm. Of those, 57 reported concerns of inequitable treatment on the basis of a protected class. Many of those interviewed said they feared retaliation if they complained, according to the report.

The three phases of the external review included an evaluation of the UI’s academic and operational units, the Athletics Department, and UI Health Care.

Play shares activists’ split in fight for equal rights While many people know of two activists Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass were, many are unaware of their 45-year friendship that consisted of ups and downs, especially over the 15th Amendment.

Anthony House museum in Rochester, New York, playwright Mat Smart found that the women’s rights leader was friends with abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The two were lifelong friends, but disagreed on the 15th Amendment, which granted African-American men the right to vote, but not women.

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement, The Agitators is set to run at Riverside Theater at 7:30 p.m. today.

Intrigued by these facts, Smart began to research the duo’s friendship, and realized their story is widely unknown to the public. After a year of researching, Smart wrote a play about Anthony and Douglass’ relationship, titling it, The Agitators.

Along with the suffrage movement, The Agitators also runs through Feb. 16, during Black History Month, and plays Feb. 15, what would have been Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday.

“As I did more research, I learned that they had a lot of times where they came together and times they were really at odds with one another,” Smart said. “They have a really nuanced, complicated relationship that really reflects American history and the complications of American history.”

The Agitators plot spans

over Anthony and Douglass’ 45-year relationship, heightening to the point where Anthony and Douglass argue over the 15th Amendment.

Anthony was upset because she wanted everyone to have the right to vote, and so did Douglass, but he came toward the amendment with the mentality of, “if we can get this now, we need to get this,” Smart said.

“It’s sort of the domain problem with politics is like, do you go for the ideal or do you go for what you think you can get?” he said. “It was a very contentious sort of amendment, making activist groups fight against each other.”

Many of the scenes show Anthony trying to undo Douglass’ gender bias, and vice versa with Douglass trying to undo Anthony’s racial bias, despite the fact that both are working toward equal rights for everyone, ringing a bell that American politics remains true to its roots in today’s political arena.

Even with their equal-rights platforms, a disconnect occurs because they are both fighting for different things, said Curtis Jackson, who plays Douglass.

“There are some very powerful words that Mat, the playwright wrote, and they say, “Lord — will you, one day, give us the strength to fight for each other as much as we fight for ourselves?” Jackson said.

Playing the role of such a respected leader in history required loads of research from both Jackson and Jessica Link, who plays Anthony.

With no audio recordings or way to tell what kind of

mannerisms either character had, Link says that they had to turn to their imaginations of what they would have been like, which leans into the fine line between being intimidating and freeing.

“What I love about this story is that it’s not just about who was Frederick Douglass

or who was Susan B. Anthony,” she said. “It’s about who were they when they were with one another.”

Although fairly bare bones, The Agitators set brings forth a primary component to help with the lapse of time. A turntable has been built into the stage floor, and will help the

story jump between scenes that have years or distance between one another, director Chris Okiishi said.

“We’re trying to surprise the audience each time, to get them to look at the actors and the stage in a different way every time a new scene starts,” he said.

High schoolers may secure spot in pharmacy school High-school seniors now have the opportunity to secure a seat in the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy by applying for the pre-pharmacy program before graduation. The college is taking applications now to start this program in the fall of 2020.

Prospective Hawkeyes will soon be able to secure a spot at one of the university’s graduate colleges during their senior years of high school.

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is introducing a program for highschool seniors to apply to the pre-pharmacy program. If accepted, they’d be guaranteed a place in the college after completing prerequisite classes and would receive guidance in structuring their class schedule so students can complete an undergraduate degree in four years and a doctorate in six, said College of Pharmacy Admissions Manager Lauren Garcia-Pastorek.

Students can take longer than four years if they don’t plan their prerequisites effectively, she said. The college is taking applications now and fall 2020 will be the first semester students are enrolled in the new program.

MERINO CONTINUED FROM FRONT This is not the first award Merino has accepted. She has won awards for various academic and creative achievements. In 1994, Merino was given the Premio Adonais, the most prestigious Spanish poetry award, by Ediciones RIALP, a poetry publication organization founded in Madrid in 1949.

Merino is the only recipient in history to be honored with both awards.

She said her novel is a makeup of human emotions and the meaning of being human, and writing’s societal impact.

“Creative writing is the key to understanding the human condition,” Merino said. “I’ve been very involved with the concept of community, society, education, and literature.

These all give meaning to the human condition.”

Merino said her writing is a source of comfort when developing her ideas.

“I can speak about the world

a 3.8 GPA, and an ACT score of at least 25 will be prompted to consider applying for assured admissions, she said. To stay in the program after their start at the UI, students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA. The college will hold 60 of its 120 seats for the students admitted through the new assured admissions program, Garcia-Pastorek said. Since the college is still working to build awareness about the program, she does not expect all 60 seats to be filled for the first year.

Part of the idea behind the program is outreach to highschool students to give them a better understanding of the jobs that exist in the field of pharmacy, Garcia-Pastorek said.

“We wanted to raise awareness about the field of pharmacy and start that pipeline earlier,” she said. “I think there is a misconception with students in high school about what you can actually do with a doctorate in pharmacy degree. So, we often catch a lot of students halfway through their undergraduate experience.”

Although the College of Pharmacy assured admissions program is the first of its kind, other colleges at the UI have programs that allow early admissions. The College of Nursing offers an early admissions process to students in high school.

Nursing programs across the U.S. are competitive, meaning they have more applicants than seats available in their programs, said Anita Nicholson, associate dean of undergraduate programs at the UI College of Nursing. For students in early admissions, as long as they maintain their GPA, they have a guaranteed seat in the nursing program, she said.

Students are still able to apply for the nursing program after they have started at the UI, but students in standard admissions typically finish their degree in four and a half years and those in early admissions finish in exactly four, Nicholson said.

“So, being early admissions, once they’re admitted they know that they have been admitted, and knowing that

I feel,” Merino said. “I like to read, to write and to share, because I am a teacher as well.”

Merino’s skills extend beyond the creative scene. In 2009, she left Dartmouth College to create the Spanish M.F.A. program at the UI, serving as its director until 2018.

When her term of director ended, Merino said she felt confident the program would live on because of how much work she put into developing the program.

“I was able to pass the torch,” Merino said. “When you develop a program, it’s good that other people also learn and take responsibility.

The idea of creating a program is that it lasts forever and goes through new directors and new styles.”

Spanish and Portuguese Departmental Executive Officer Denise Filios said that Merino’s experience and ability to create the program from the ground up was a significant accomplishment.

“She created a very rigorous, yet also attractive and very doable program,” Filios

said. “She is so innovative as a teacher and is dedicated to student learning. It is so important to her to create opportunities for students, whether they are undergraduate, graduate, international or not.”

UI International Writing Program Director Christopher Merrill said the program is a testament to Merino’s success.

“Our M.F.A. program has become one of the best in the country, and I feel like this is embodied in everything she writes,” Merrill said.

Along with being an accomplished writer, Merino said she is an expert in comics and graphic novels, as well as a professor of Hispanic studies. Balancing an academic and creative career is no small feat, but Filios feels it is an important component of Merino's identity.

“What makes Ana really unique is she is both completely a research scholar and a high-profile creative writer,” Filios said. “To have such a high achievement in so many different areas, it really shows a high level of accomplishment.”

pharmacy are unable to finish their prerequisites after two years because they were not on track to enter the program, pharmacy Clinical Associate Professor Susan Vos said.

“I hope it’ll help us grow

the profession of pharmacy to make sure we’re getting students who are really interested…” Vos said. “I think it just gives us the chance to talk about all the great opportunities that are out there in pharmacy.”

Where Iowa stands 10 days from caucus night

After more than a year of campaigning, the Democratic presidential nomination is down to a four-way race in the Hawkeye State.

elijah-helton@uiowa.edu At (extremely) long last, the 2020 Iowa caucuses are just 10 days away. I’ve been writing about the presidential-nomination race since the fall of 2017.

I wrote about the campaign outlooks for more than 20 candidates, but this close to the decision time, Iowa Democrats seem to have narrowed it down to four viable choices.

The general election is still over nine months away, but at least we’ll know who won Iowa in just in a few more days.

Let’s look at the top four and how they got to this point.

Looking at Biden’s poll numbers, most people would conclude he’s the favorite (albeit a weak one) to capture the most delegates on caucus night.

He’s floating around the low 20s in terms of percentage points, a few points higher than his rival Democrats.

And he isn’t just holding onto residual name recognition. The former vice president dipped as low as third place and into the mid-teens in early December, according to the FiveThirtyEight poll tracker, only to make a comeback in recent weeks.

Biden isn’t really consolidating his party’s moderate wing either. His return to the top coincided with a small surge from fellow centrist Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who’s now in a distant fifth. But the Klobu-charge hasn’t seemed to put a dent in Biden’s strong chance to finish first.

America’s favorite socialist is no stranger to being in second place in the Hawkeye State behind an establishment figure, and he has a chance to win it this time around.

After an October heart attack threatened the 78-year-old’s candidacy, Sanders rebounded and proved he’s still in this thing. He’s even polled first in a few recent polls, including the Des Moines Register Iowa Poll from earlier this month.

The biggest potential problem from Sanders is in delegate count. Crossing the necessary 15 percent viability threshold to earn delegates won’t be a problem in Democratic strongholds such as Iowa City. However, his margin is close enough to the line that support may swing closer to the middle in other areas.

Depending on the pollster, the former mayor is in second, third, or fourth place. That’s not bad for a guy whose only electoral experience is running the fourth-largest city in Indiana.

Like Warren, Buttigieg’s time in the sun seems to have expired. Looking at the poll tracker from RealClearPolitics, his last day in first place was Dec. 31, 2019. It appears Boot Edge Edge is so last decade.

He has another similarity to Warren in that he still has a decent shot of finishing strong despite his recent drop-off. He has a chance to take votes away from a lot of coalitions on caucus night. He can pull college-educated whites from Warren, electability-focused moderates from Biden, and the 8-ish percent of Klobuchar supporters.

Back in October, it looked like Warren might continue her months-long steady climb in and cruise to a fairly huge win. Then her hot streak started to cool with the Iowa weather.

A short-term frontrunner is nothing new in presidential primaries. Ben Carson rose and fell in 2016, and Michelle Bachmann in 2012, and Rudy Guiliani in 2008, and Howard Dean in 2004, and you get the idea.

But Warren isn’t out of it yet. The Register Iowa poll had her in second place, and she’s not that far off from Sanders. If she can scrap together just a couple more percentage points before Feb. 4, she might be able to close out the Vermont senator and leave Iowa reinstated as the top choice of progressive Democrats.

I’m writing in response to the self-congratulatory claims quoted in the Daily Iowan article of Dec. 11, “Four UI shared-governance branches back public/private partnership.” This article appears to be part of a public-relations strategy by the university administration to respond to (legitimate and understandable) concerns raised by the public and elected representatives about the lack of transparency in the decision-making process that led to the recent and rapid approval of the public/private partnership.

[Editor’s note: The DI is independent from the University of Iowa.]

As a member of one of the four “shared-governance branches” mentioned in that article and as president of the UI chapter of the American Association of University Professors, I can say that this decision-making process was not an example of shared governance as defined by our organization, which mandates “shared responsibility among the different components of institutional government and specifies areas of primary responsibility for governing boards, administrations, and faculties.”

True, UI President Bruce Harreld and other representatives of the central administration met with Faculty Senate and Faculty Council a number of times to inform us of their deliberations and answer our questions. However, it quickly became clear that they had already decided to move forward on this risky scheme. Furthermore, the very nature of the scheme as a private venture prevents them from provid-

ing us with crucial information about the parties involved. Rather, it became clear the shared governance was to be part of the deal itself, insofar as all of the constituencies consulted will now be able to compete for the funds.

The main concern which faculty raised at every meeting, and to which no one from president on down had a satisfactory response, was how this scheme would affect state appropriations. What’s to stop the Legislature from reducing them in proportion to the millions of dollars we will now be competing over in the coming years?

The answer: Nothing.

Indeed, insofar as the scheme was originally proposed by the governor, it would appear likely that such deappropriation was part of the plan. The consequences this will ultimately have for faculty recruitment and retention remain unclear. I fear in future years the UI will become a cautionary tale on how not to respond to decreasing state appropriations.

By making all these rosy claims about shared governance, the central administration, having already made their decision, is essentially ensuring that the blame will be shared, unfairly and inaccurately, if this doesn’t work out. A public university is a public trust, not a private investment. And governance cannot be shared when decisions are privately made for personal and corporate profit.

Track travels to Kentucky for first road meet Iowa will travel to Lexington for the Rob McCravy Memorial meet.

lucy-liautaud@uiowa.edu After three home invitationals in a row, Iowa track and field is set to compete at Kentucky’s Nutter Field House for the Rod McCravy Memorial. This weekend’s meet marks the first time in program history that Iowa has traveled to Lexington, Kentucky.

For hurdler Jamal Britt — a freshman transfer from California — the meet is his first time going on the road with Iowa.

Britt ran a 7.82 in the 60-meter hurdles at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational last weekend, the fifth best time on Iowa’s all-time leaderboard. He also recorded a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 7.53 meters.

Britt is confident that home success will translate to a road atmosphere.

“Since it’s my first time running indoor ever, I’m pretty happy with how my start is,” Britt said. “[I want] to im-

prove in all of my events, but right now I’m seeing where it all takes me.”

The same mentality goes for sophomore sprinter Wayne Lawrence (1:16.55), whose Jan. 17 time set the school record for the 600-meter (1:16.55) and placed him at the top of the Big Ten Conference.

The 4x400 relay team Lawrence took second at the meet but tallied the fastest time in the Big Ten (3:10.36), which, according to Lawrence, has motivated him to focus on his performance in Kentucky.

“After the meet, I want to end up the world-leading 400-meter runner,” Lawrence said. “I would also be in the Big Ten lead for that, and I would also like to place top 10 in the nation in the [200-meter]. I don’t really know how that’s going to go. For our four-by-four, [we want] to drop that time. Basically, my goal is to run fast and perform well.”

Senior multi-event athlete Jenny Kimbro was part of

the women’s 4x400 team that took first at last weekend’s invitational.

She’ll revisit many of the same events she competed in at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational — including the high jump and 200-meter dash — and is motivated to improve her marks.

“Every time you’re done, you think, ‘This could be so much better, and this could be so much better.” Kimbro said. “There’s always room for improvement. But I guess I’m excited to do some events again that I did a few weeks ago and see how my training has improved.”

Senior hurdler Jaylan McConico has the same outlook going into this weekend’s meet.

“Training has been going really well,” McConico said.

“Me and the guys, just everything, the atmosphere feels really good. We’re on a good upward trend, so I’m really excited about how things are going to go.”

on numbers in preparation for this weekend’s meet.

“I try not to put a time on it just so I don’t disappoint myself with any unrealistic expectations,” McConico said. “But I’ll just go out there,

think about my technique, stay technically sound, and just continue with what I’m doing.”

The meet kicks off at 4 p.m. today with the women’s 60-meter run.

Swim and dive to compete in Shamrock Invite The men’s and women’s teams will face off against noteworthy foes in South Bend this weekend in their first nondual of the new year.

defeated, 157-143, and the women lost, 199-101.

The losses drop the dual meet records to 3-3 overall (3-2 Big Ten) for the men and 5-4 overall (3-3 Big Ten) for the women.

For the men, sophomores Mateusz Arndt and Aleksey Tarasenko swam well against the Wildcats as Arndt won the 500-free and finished in third position in the 200-free.

Tarasenko collected two individual titles at the meet in the 50 and 200-free.

On the women’s side, Allyssa Fluit impressed winning the 200 and 500-free for the Hawkeyes.

This weekend’s competition at the Rolfs Aquatic Center will feature the men’s and women’s teams of Ohio State, Iowa, and host Notre Dame along with the women’s team from Akron and Missouri State’s men’s team. The action begins at 9 a.m. both Friday. and Saturday.

Ohio State’s men’s team ranks 16th in the country, ac-

cording to the Jan. 22 edition of the TYR/CSCAA poll. The Buckeye women are inside the nation’s top 10 at No. 7 in the poll.

The team rankings done by CollegeSwimming have the Buckeye men 25th and women at 20th. Notre Dame’s men’s team holds the 20th spot in the rankings. Iowa’s men’s team comes in at 18th in both polls.

The men’s team defeated the Fighting Irish recently in a dual contest on Jan. 11 in Iowa City, where they beat then 17th-ranked Notre Dame, 159.50-140.50. Notre Dame defeated the Iowa women, In last year’s Shamrock Invitational, which featured the same teams as this year’s contest, the Hawkeye men finished third in the field with 780.5 points, while the women were fourth with 434.5 points.

Samantha Tamborski and Jayah Matthews had great showings off the boards at the 2019 event as they finished first and second in the 3-meter competition. Matthews captured first place in the

1-meter portion while Tamborski finished in fourth.

The tandem of Tamborski and Matthews has continued their success this season. Both have been named the Big Ten Diver of the Week multiple times this season.

Anton Hoertz also impressed for the men’s diving team last year. He took fourth and third in the 1 and 3-meter contests at the Shamrock Invitational.

Tarasenko and seniors Steve Fiolick and Joe Mhyre also performed well on the last day of last year’s event, finishing second, fourth, and sixth in the 100-free.

This meet will be one of the final opportunities for Iowa before competing in conference championships.

Next, both Hawkeye teams will welcome the Western Illinois Leathernecks to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Feb. 7. This will be the season’s final dual meet before the Big Ten Championships begin Feb. 19.

“I think it’s really important in a zone for guards, the top guards, to get involved in the rebounding,” Doyle said. “A lot of times, it’s easy to ball watch when you’re up there, contesting the shot but just making a focused effort to go get that ball and go help out our backline.”

Her scoring came all over the court. She made five layups, two jumpers, one 3-pointer, and nine free throws. On the night, she was 66.7 percent from the field and 100 percent from the free throw line.

“My teammates do a great job of keeping me energized and motivated,” Doyle said.

“I’ve got a former teammate on the coaching staff and on the team, the Jordans,” Marinelli said.

Rocky Jordan is a redshirt freshman at Ohio State and is listed in the Buckeyes’ probable lineup at 184-pounds. The St. Paris Graham high school alum is 22-4 this season and ranked 22nd at his weight

by Trackwrestling.

Jordan’s brother, Bo, is on Ohio State’s coaching staff.

Bo was an All-American in all four years of his career as a Buckeye wrestler from 2015-18.

Bo and Rocky’s father, Jeff Jordan, coached Marinelli in high school at St. Paris Graham.

Marinelli isn’t the only person in Iowa’s wrestling room with connections to Ohio State. Hawkeye head coach Tom Brands and Buckeye head coach Tom Ryan both wrestled for Iowa.

During the game, Doyle scanned the court and found sophomore center Monika Czinano and fellow senior guard Makenzie Meyer multiple times for buckets. Doyle started the game off with a pass to Czinano, who then hit a midrange jumper.

Meyer has had success playing with Doyle as a teammate all year long.

“She always finds me,” Meyer said. “She does a really good job penetrating, and she knows if my defender comes over to help, that’s when she pitches to me to get a good look, so, yeah, nothing new.”

Doyle had a nice stretch in Iowa’s three previous comeback victories coming into this game. She scored 31 points against Indiana on Jan. 12, 17 two NCAA team championships in 1991 and 1992. Gable’s 1992 Hawkeyes were undefeated.

Fast-forwarding to 201920, the Hawkeyes are, once again, undefeated. In the way of Brands’ top-ranked Hawkeyes are Ryan’s fourthranked Buckeyes.

Ohio State has won three Big Ten Conference championships in the last five years.

The Buckeyes were also national champions in 2015.

“How do you get ready to go for a tough schedule? You do it week to week and opponent to opponent,” Brands said. “You’re looking for characteristics. You’re not dwelling on things that your opponent does.”

Since Iowa’s last title in 2010, the Hawkeyes have chased the likes of Ohio State and Penn State, but in 2020 the tables have seemingly turned.

“It’s pretty cool that every time people come in here, they’re trying to make a statement,” senior Michael Kemerer said. “We’re protecting our home arena.

We’re going to make a statement, too. It makes it fun.”

Despite their top ranking, the Hawkeyes aren’t overlooking any of their opponents.

“You just got to be ready,” Kemerer said. “You can’t just

points at Minnesota Jan. 16, and 21 points at Wisconsin Jan. 19. She had a double-double against Indiana with 10 assists.

She had a career high in the Hawkeyes’ blowout win over Illinois on Dec. 31 with 33 points.

As of this game, she is averaging 18.6 points per game and 6.2 assists per game this season, the most on the team.

Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder was proud of how Doyle led her team against the Buckeyes.

“She just wills our team to win,” Bluder said. “When she goes to the hoop with the ball, I have complete faith and trust in her.”

Doyle’s next chance to impress will be on Sunday at home against Michigan State in front of Hawkeye great Megan Gustafson, whose number will be retired in a ceremony after the game.

Ollinger anchoring Iowa’s defense may not have her in the limelight, but it is a role she has embraced.

“It’s not a secret I’m not the biggest scorer on the team, but I try to bring my presence in other areas,” Ollinger said. “I think that’s what makes our team so successful, is because people just focus on their role and being the best they can be.”

Iowa forced the Buckeyes to go inside in the second half, with the Buckeyes nailing just one 3-pointer in the entire final 20 minutes after making five in the

first quarter alone. Despite lacking many open looks, the Buckeyes attempted 15 shots from beyond the arc in the second half.

Another Ollinger block and Meyer three finally earned the Hawkeyes their first lead since midway through the second quarter.

Ohio State fought back against the roaring Carver-Hawkeye Arena, managing to draw fouls and getting several key offensive rebounds. With just under five minutes to play, an incredible dish from Doyle to Ollinger set up an easy two, giving Iowa a four-point cushion.

It would ultimately be Kathleen Doyle who would get Iowa across the finish line. The senior made sev-

eral key drives to the lane late in the contest. She put the game out of reach with just under a minute left, drawing an and-one to put Iowa ahead 75-66.

A major part of Iowa’s success came at the free throw line, where the team went 19-of-21 and made more free throws than Ohio State attempted. The 12 made free throws in the fourth quarter were not an accident.

“We’re definitely trying to get to that free throw line,” Bluder said. “We know we have good shooters.”

With the victory, Iowa moves into first place in the Big Ten standings as the team nears the halfway mark of its conference schedule.

eyes hitting the mat tonight. Two OSU wrestlers are ranked first in their weight class.

No. 1 Luke Pletcher is slated to take on No. 9 Max Murin at 141-pounds. In addition, No. 1 Kollin Moore

and No. 6 Jacob Warner will likely meet in the 197-pound bout. Moore and Plethcher are both undefeated this season.

“It’s going to be a war,” Marinelli said. “My teammates are ready. We’re hav-

ing fun in the [wrestling room]. We’re embracing everything, and it’s just a blast to compete, honestly. We’re having fun out there. This coaching staff has put us in the position to win a national title.”

200 Big Ten wins for Lisa Bluder

HAWKEYE UPDATES Stanley to participate in 2020 All-Star Football Challenge

Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley has been selected to participate in the 2020 State Farm AllStar Football Challenge.

This is the 22nd edition of this event, which will air on ESPN2 on Stanley Jan. 31.

Stanley is the fourth Hawkeye since 2017 to compete in the event.

Sean Welsh and Josh Jackson competed in the event in 2018, while C.J. Beathard competed in 2017.

The Menomonie, Wisconsin, native started all 13 games for the Hawkeyes in 2019 and all 39 games the past three seasons. Iowa posted a 27-12 record in Stanley’s three seasons as starting quarterback.

Stanley passed for 2,951 yards with 16 passing touchdowns in 2019. He ranks second in career passing touchdowns (68), career passing yards (8,302), career completions (673), and career pass attempts (1,155), and third in career total offense.

The Hawkeyes averaged 28.4 points per game in Stanley’s 39 career starts. His streak of 39 consecutive starts at quarterback ranks second in school history to Long (74). He had 16 passing touchdowns this past season and 68 in his career. Stanley ranks second all-time in program history, trailing only Long (74).

Each player at the event will individually participate in a time event and will finish with a full team event. All events will be timed and have individual winner, which will compile into a cumulative score to determine the winning team.

Iowa baseball team captains announced

Iowa baseball seniors Justin Jenkins, Grant Judkins, Grant Leonard, and Austin Martin have been voted team captains for the 2020 season, head coach Rick Heller announced on Thursday.

Jenkins started 22 games in 2019, where he hit .260 with 12 runs scored and six stolen bases.

Judkins, a Jenkins right-handed pitcher from Pella, Iowa, returns as the leader of the Iowa starting rotation.

Last season as a starter, Judkins went 4-7 with a 2.72 ERA with 65 strikeouts over 82 and twothirds innings.

Leonard returns Judkins for his second season as the Hawkeyes’ closer.

The reliever was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2019 after tallying a single-season record 14 saves.

He finished the year with a 2-3 record and an Leonard ERA of 3.37.

Martin started 53 games for the Hawkeyes last season — including 49 at catcher — in his first year at Iowa. He hit .294 hit 10 doubles and 29 runs scored.

benjamin-palya@uiowa.edu In what has become quite a familiar scene for those watching Iowa women’s basketball this season, the Hawkeyes came back from yet another halftime deficit to ease ahead of Ohio State, 77-68.

The win is the team’s 31st consecutive victory at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, extending the second longest home winning streak in the nation. It’s also the latest in a long line of recent

comeback victories for the Hawkeyes.

The win gave Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder her 200th career Big Ten victory. Bluder joins Rutgers’ Vivian Stringer as the only Big Ten women’s basketball coaches to pass that milestone.

“We’re fortunate to have had some close games here lately,” senior Makenzie Meyer said. “It is really going to help us later in the season when it comes tournament time."

Iowa’s offense got the looks it wanted with Monika Czinano, who dominated early on in

“It's probably as enjoyable as any [team] I've had, and I've had some that were really fun to coach.”

In the second half, Doyle’s work became even more important. Down 39-35 to the Buckeyes at halftime, the Hawkeyes worked their way back and took the lead with 5:22 to go. Since 1983, Carver-Hawkeye Arena has served as one of the biggest stages in all of collegiate wrestling. For All-American Alex Marinelli, the stage will likely feel larger than ever tonight.

For the first time in Marinelli’s career, Iowa will host Ohio State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“I’ve never wrestled Ohio State in Carver,” Marinelli said. “I went there and wrestled in [the Schottenstein Center], and that was cool, but to get [the Buckeyes] at Carver is special.”

Marinelli’s hometown is Miamisburg, Ohio, just 76.5 miles from Columbus.

At St. Paris Graham high school, Marinelli was a four-time Ohio State Individual champion. He went 200-4 during his high school career, leading his team to four consecutive state titles and one national title.

isaac-goffin@uiowa.edu It was another tough game in the Big Ten for the Iowa women’s basketball team, this time against Ohio State. But once again they prevailed, 77-68, and a big part of that was due to senior guard Kathleen Doyle.

Doyle, who scored a game-high 26 points, started the game off strong and never let up.

In the first quarter, she had seven points, two rebounds, and two assists. That only continued in the second quarter when she added four points,
