Helping underrepresented Hawks thrive The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion offers pre-college and academic services to underserved groups.

The University of Iowa’s Division of Diversity Equity and Inclusion provides a variety of services, programs, and activities that strive to create an inclusive and welcoming community for UI students, staff, and faculty.

The division serves various communities: black/African American, Asian/Asian American, persons with disabilities, first-generation students, Hispanic/Latinx, LGBTQ, and Native American.

Housed under the umbrella of the division, the Center for Diversity and Enrichment offers academic coaching to help underserved students at the UI navigate the college transition and other university processes. Programming includes Advantage Iowa Scholors, Iowa Edge, and TRIO Student Support Services.

TRIO Student Support Services and Upward Bound Serving 350 Hawkeye undergraduate students, TRIO

Student Support Services is a federally funded program designed to help first-generation or low-income students navigate college life. Program coaches and courses offer guidance in academic skill building, academic probation support, career planning, graduate/professional school preparation, FAFSA filing assistance, personal financial literacy and college financing options, health and well-being, and leadership development.

Similar to TRIO SSS, Upward Bound is a federally funded college prep program in three southeastern Iowa high schools for first-generation and/or low-income students who want to pursue a college degree.

Iowa Edge Iowa Edge is a transitionary program in the week leading up to the first day of classes. Selected participants meet faculty and campus leaders, build community with a group of peers before the semester begins, and attend workshops to

develop leadership skills. Applications for the program are open until June 26. Programming continues throughout the year.

Advantage Iowa Scholars The Advantage Iowa award is a merit-based four-yearscholarship for students from diverse backgrounds. Students apply through the MyUI portal.

Student Disability Services Part of the Division of Student Life, SDS serves as a liaison between students and instructors for accommodations such as extended test-time, reduced distraction seating, large-print text, and closed captioning resources. An unprecedented year From the first-in-the-nation caucuses to shifting university operations online in the face of a global pandemic, the 2019-2020 school year marked an unique year for the University of Iowa community.

COVID-19 The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak upended life for the University of Iowa this spring. Efforts to stop the virus’s spread sent classes online, cut NCAA sports seasons short, and economic uncertainty left Hawks without jobs and graduates scrambling to solidify post-graduation plans. But the crisis also exposed Hawkeyes’ resiliency. Despite being hundreds of miles apart, Hawkeyes set up their laptops, logged onto classes, and connected virtually. In Iowa City, a group of med students helped doctors and medical workers out with chores, child care and grocery runs. Uncertainty hangs over the status of the fall semester, but university administrators are planning for in-person operations to resume.

by the Hawkeye State in their quest to capture the Democratic nomination for president. Former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders came within a razor-thin margin of each other, and Johnson County, home to the UI, went to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. However, glitches with a reporting app meant results weren’t fully reported until weeks after Feb. 3, throwing campaigns and media reporting into disarray.

P3 The UI signed a historic deal to lease its utility system as part of a public/private partnership.

The $1.165 billion 50-year deal’s net proceeds will be invested in a new endowment and allocated

to campus to fill in annual funding gaps in the UI’s strategic plan. UI President Bruce Harreld likened signing the deal to drafting the U.S. Constitution.

Shakeup in Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion TaJuan Wilson, the former vice president for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, resigned in August after a seven-week stint in the position. He stayed on within the vice president’s office of external relations and was allowed to telecommute to work as he looked for another job. The university is slated to announce its new VP for DEI in spring 2021, which means students will have the chance to evaluate candidates this coming year.

Honoring Hawkeye greats Those who watched Hawkeye Football’s Holiday Bowl game win Dec. 27, 2019, may have noticed the Tigerhawk decal absent from players’ helmets. Just weeks before, on Dec. 17, legendary coach Hayden Fry died at the age of 90. In his 20 seasons with the Hawkeyes, he’s widely credited with turning the program around. In another loss to the Hawkeye sports family, former UI athletic department head Chalmers “Bump” Elliott died earlier in December. The 21-year leader hired some of the most influential coaches in Hawkeye history, including Fry and Dan Gable. At the bowl game, players added a “Bump” decal to honor Elliott.

Marching for change After Minneapolis police officers killed George Floyd nationwide protests spread nationwide, including in Iowa City. The UI and the City of Iowa City pledged to review and reform its policing policies after law enforcement met protesters with tear gas to block them from accessing I-80. The use of tear gas prompted calls from student groups and alumni for the UI to end contracts with the Iowa City Police Deaprtment, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Coralville Police Deaprtment. Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague said he dissaproved of how the protest was handled, and city officials marched with protesters in the following days. A group called the Iowa Freedom Riders issued a series of 13 demands, which included rerouting a quarter of ICPD’s budget to social services.

Reshaping Hawkeye football Started by a Tweet from former Iowa offensive lineman James Daniels June 5, several former Hawkeye football players called out racial disparities and unfair treatment of black players in the Iowa football program. Several specifically referenced strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle, who was placed on administrative leave. Hawkeye head coach Kirk Ferentz said he formed an advisory committee made up of former Iowa football players to drive change in the program.

Caucuses Iowa hosted the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 3. In a year-long crescendo leading up to caucus night, nearly two dozen candidates stopped

Campus adapts to COVID-19 University of Iowa starting semester with a hybrid of in-person, online learning.

Some say it's not enough This fall, Hawkeyes are settling into an unprecedented semester. After sending students home in March to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, the UI is returning students to campus for a hybrid in-person and online semester.

The UI kept its start date — Aug. 24 — and will conduct classes virtually after Thanksgiving break. Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa started their semesters a week early, opting to end the semester at Thanksgiving.

Classes of more than 50 students, such as online lecture classes, will be held virtually, with some discussion sections and labs to be held in person. Freshmen will each have at least one class in person. More than half of undergraduate hours are online, UI Interim Provost Kevin Kregel told reporters Aug. 10.

UI administrators have stressed that their policies have made "room for choice" in whether to return to in-person learning.

“Implementing these policies has created room for choice. Choice for our students, families, and our instructors,” Kregel said Aug. 10.

Students can request accommadations to transition their classes online.

Of new requirements — the UI will require masks to go into campus buildings, and promote social distancing.

Iowa's 10 residence halls are open this year, filled with about 5,500 students. About 6,000 students live in the residence halls during a typical semester, according to UI administrators. There is space set aside for quarantine housing in nearly every residence hall, and Housing and Dining will attempt to keep residents in isolation “on the same side of the river” as their home residence hall.

Stange said who will be informed when a student tests positive in a residence hall depends on contact tracing guidelines from Johnson County Public Health.

Iowa State, which is testing all of its students in the residence halls, found about 140 students tested positive from move-in until the first week of classes.

The UI isn't conducting mass testing of students in the residence halls. Kregel said the university was following state and federal guidelines in not administering mass testing, adding that that could lead to false hope among students with innaccurate test results and a high cost to administer.

Some students and faculty, though, say it's not enough to keep the UI community safe. The Campaign to Organize Graduate Students protested the in-person semester outside the IMU in early August, urging the university to pivot to online classes. Student governments urged the administration to move to online instruction and 280 instructors signed a pledge committing to a digital return to campus. A public petition calling for the university to move to online learning has collected more than 700 petitions as of Aug. 18.

Key University of Iowa leaders University administrators chart the course for the 30,000-student campus. Here are the UI’s top decision-makers.

President Bruce Harreld University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld has served in his position since November 2015, after he was appointed by the state Board of Regents amid protests from the Hawkeye community.

With a background in business, working with companies such as Kraft Foods, Boston Market, and IBM, Harreld did not have the higher-education experience that many campus community members believed was necessary for him to effectively run the university.

His term as the UI’s 21st president is slated to end in 2023 unless extended by the regents. The governing board in 2019 extended his contract, which was initially set to expire this November.

Since 2015, Harreld has charted the course through a $1.165 billion utility system

public/private partnership and a pandemic.

After Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds suggested the state universities explore funding options other than state support, Harreld presented the UI’s plans for a public/private agreement with campus utilities to fill a funding gap for the university’s strategic plan. The 50-year deal, approved by the regents in December, closed in March and will allow the UI to fund strategic initiatives.

This semester, Harreld has helped orchestrate the university’s COVID-19 response, which included transitioning classes online, directing employees to work remotely, and preparing UI Hospitals and Clinics to cautiously treat patients with the disease.

Each year, Harreld conducts a President’s Leadership Class offered to second-year students to develop students’

leadership skills.

UI Interim Kevin Kregel

Provost

The UI named Kevin Kregel interim provost July 16, to fill the role after the UI reached a settlement agreement with then-Provost monserrat Fuentes. Kregel, who was the executive vice provost and senior associate provost for faculty, will last at least two years “to provide stability,” the UI said at the time.

Fuentes began as provost in June 2019, and implemented initiatives geared toward first -generation students and underrepresented students, faculty, and staff.

Kregel’s appointment by Harreld is pending approval by the state Board of Regents.

A search for a permanent associate vice president is ongoing following the resignation of the previous administrator, TaJuan Wilson, who held the position for seven weeks. Vice President for Student Life Sarah Hansen was appointed to the position in March, just before students left campus amid community

spread of the novel coronavirus. Hansen previously served as associate vice president for Student Life and helped manage strategic planning in the UI Provost’s Office.

As one of four finalists for the position, Hansen said in a public forum earlier this year that she will focus on expanding upon learning opportunities, experience, and exposure for a diverse community of UI students, faculty, and staff.

Senior VP for Finance and Operations Rod Lehnertz As UI Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations, Rod Lehnertz manages the planning, design, construction projects, and more for the university. Lehnertz began at the UI as an architect and project manager in 1994 and

helped the university through the aftermath of the 2008 flood. He continues to spearhead construction and renovation projects on buildings at the heart of campus and at UIHC.

VP for Medical Affairs Brooks Jackson UI Vice President for Medical Affairs and Carver College of Medicine Dean Brooks Jackson is helping guide UI Health Care through the COVID-19 pandemic. In his role, Jackson has helped integrate planning and operations for the College of Medicine, UIHC, and UI Physicians, which together make up UI Health Care.

Jackson also serves as a pathology professor and is internationally recognized for his research on AIDS.

An 811-bed hospital, UIHC admits about 37,000 people annually for in-patient care.

Stead Family Children’s Hospital Iowa’s only nationally ranked children’s hospital, the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, cared for 83,937 pediatric cancer patients and children with medical disorders. The new hospital building, which overlooks Kinnick Stadium, opened its doors in February 2017. After the first quarter of each football game, fans wave to kids on the top floor of the hospital, a Hawkeye tradition dubbed the “Iowa Wave.”

Carver College of Medicine UIHC is the only academic medical-care

center in the state of Iowa and offers aspiring medical students hands-on experience with award-winning faculty and staff.

First-year students can work at the hospital or volunteer in various wards and departments.

LGBTQ+ Clinic The LGBTQ+ clinic, established in 2012, offers sexual health services by clinic staff with LGBTQ-specific cultural humility training. The clinic is dedicated to those seeking sexual health services such as HIV testing and prevention, gynecological services, and mental health services.

Navigating student health services Located in Westlawn on 200 Newton Road, Student Health is only a short bus ride, walk, or ride from both the east and west sides of campus. The clinic offers students unlimited visits to health-care providers who are board-certified MDs in family medicine, psy-

chiatry and gynecology, certified physician assistants, and certified Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners.

I’m the first First Gen @ Iowa First Gen @ Iowa is a campus-wide initiative to celebrate and support first-generation students.

The foundation of the First Gen @ Iowa initiative, the First-Generation Task Force reviewed research and best practices related to supporting first-generation students.

The task force partnered with University of Iowa Undergraduate Student Government to host an annual First-Generation Summit in April 2019 to celebrate first-generation students and their accomplishments.

nity Located in Stanley Hall is an option for students whose parents haven’t completed a four-year degree. The LLC allows students to meet with peers of the same identity, build relationships with faculty members, and learn about programs and resources geared toward first-generation students.

Iowa Edge and TRIO Student Support Services Iowa Edge is a threeday-long program before the start of the school year to ease the academic and social transition to the UI for students who are first-generation, African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Latinx, or LGBTQ. Stu-

dents can apply online until June 26 for the program, which is slated to continue as scheduled.

A continuation of the short program, Iowa Edge Student Organization pairs students with faculty, mentors, fosters a community, and builds leadership skills. The organization’s initiatives aim to increase student retention, student diversity, and the quality of student life at the UI. TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded program to coach students on topics such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, graduate school applications, and more for students who are first-generation and/ or low income and demonstrate academic need.

The University of Iowa offers a number of resources to help guide first-generation students, those whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree.

Sexual-misconduct support available The University of Iowa offers confidential and nonconfidential sexual-misconduct resources for students who need to seek help.

The University of Iowa provides a variety of resources, both confidential and nonconfidential, to support students who may experience sexual misconduct during their time at the University of Iowa. Sexual misconduct can include sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, or dating/domestic violence.

While students may report to the police and seek medical assistance for a forensics exam, there are also on-campus options to assist them.

For those seeking confidential resources, students can turn to the Rape Victim Advocacy Program or the Domes-

tic Violence Intervention Program, both of which have 24-hour hotlines and in-person offices.

A brief guide to public transportation From buses to biking, Iowa City offers several modes of transportation for Hawkeyes to get where they need to be.

Whether University of Iowa students live on campus or off, there are various transportation options throughout Iowa City to help them get around. Incoming students should download the Transit App from the app store for live updates on bus routes and stops. The app also allows users to plan trips, add favorite stops or routes, and customize routes based on a destination search.

Nite Ride The UI also offers a free and safe transportation service that runs from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night for students who are out late. Nite Ride can be contacted through the number on the back of any UI student’s student ID, or can be booked through the HawkTools app or on their website. Students can ride for free and share their shuttle, or pay a $1 fee for express service.

The Cambus is a public, student-driven, and free form of transportation that runs seven days a week around campus. The Blue, Red, Interdorm, and Hawkeye Interdorm routes all stop at each residence hall and the Main Library. The Cambus also offers specialized on-demand transportation for students, faculty, and staff with disabilities in vehicles called bionic buses. Iowa City and Coralville Transportation both have bus routes that come through campus, and students can purchase an Iowa City or Coralville U-Pass, which offers a student-discounted fare. Masks are required.

The UI was awarded a silver bike-friendly designation by the League of American Bicyclists. Bike racks dot the campus, and downtown Iowa City. Several downtown streets, including Clinton, Jefferson, Governor, and Dodge Streets have bikeways.

Campus parking Students can park their own cars at the Hawk Lot — accessible via the Cambus Hawkeye Interdorm route. Students can also buy a daytime parking pass for campus parking lots or a night and weekend permit — which allows them to park on campus on weekends and after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Old Capitol Mall: a downtown hub The Old Capitol Mall is home to quick-bite restaurants and several University of Iowa offices.

Positioned between Voxman Music Building and the Pentacrest is The Old Capitol Mall on the block of S. Clinton and Washington Streets.

The mall houses several dining options, a CVS Pharmacy, and many beauty services offering tanning, waxing, and nail care. Students can order a prescription for pickup or transfer an order from home to CVS. All the Old Cap shops and restaurants are located on its first floor. From Chipotle and Freddy’s to Buffalo Wild Wings and Panera Bread, there are plenty of fast and casual options that are easy for students to swing into to grab a bite between classes.

Also located on the first

floor is one of the main offices for University Counseling Service, where students can easily schedule a free set of counseling appointments or a consultation to determine the best counseling plan for you. Across from UCS is a UI QuickCare facility, a walkin medical clinic available to students and anyone in the Iowa City community. QuickCare allows students to seek medical attention without the hassle of scheduling a doctor’s appointment.

Iowa City’s outdoor mall Located in the heart of Iowa City, the Pedestrian Mall offers a fun place for students to shop and grab a bite.

With live music, a variety of small shops, locally-owned restaurants, and vivid nightlife, the Pedestrian Mall, is the heart of the Iowa City Downtown District.

Known commonly as the Ped Mall, the Pedestrian Mall offers over two dozen shops and restaruants, all clustered around an open area dotted with park benches. The space is newly renovated, having just completed the Pedestrian Mall Improvements Project in 2019 to improve accessibility, infrastructure, and the overall feel of the area, according to the city’s website.

The Ped Mall was originally constructed in the 1970s as part of a government-sponsored, urban-renewal program. The strip is located across from the Old Capitol Mall and extends across Clinton Street to Linn Street and from Washington Street to College Street.

Key features include a colorful children’s playground with a spongy surface, a series of bronze sculptures, and benches that are ideal for studying outdoors or meeting up with friends.

Food carts often operate on the walkway between storefronts, serving gyros, grilled cheese, and tacos for a quick

bite. If they have a little extra time, however, students can stop by any one of the many restaurants in the Ped Mall for fantastic food. Many restaurants offer both indoor and outdoor seating options for diners to enjoy.

Free concerts and music events are offered in the warmer months and bring the close-knit Iowa City community even closer together through live music.

The Ped Mall also often hosts pop-up shops like the annual Holiday Market/Pop-up shops, where local retailers sell Christmas and holiday decor.

It’s also home to cultural festivals. During the Iowa City Latino Festival, vendors set up shop with dishes like roasted corn on the cob and Latinx music is performed live or played through speakers.

Pentacrest Museums offer glimpse of Iowa City history Free to the public, the Pentacrest Museums bring culture and history to campus.

Among the many learning experiences available across campus are the University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums. Located in both Macbride Hall and the Old Capitol, these museums are free and normally open to the public.

The Museum of Natural History in Macbride is home to Rusty the Giant Sloth. Visitors can walk through a display of Iowa’s 500 million years of natural and cultural heritage. Each floor offers exhibits in a different historical period, while the ground floor is dedicated solely to the museum and doesn’t contain any classrooms. In six different exhibits, you can explore Iowa’s history from the Jurassic Periods to the Ice Age to the present.

The Old Capitol Museum represents the pioneering spirit of the state of Iowa and the UI. The building once housed the state governing body, when Iowa City served as the state’s capital from 1846 to 1857 before that title moved to Des Moines. The Old Capitol has now been renovated into a museum featuring Iowa City and UI history Visitors to the Old Capitol can explore the former senate or supreme court chambers. The museum seeks to educate the public on the continuing significance of the humanities through public outreach initiatives, educational programming, exhibitions, and academic scholarship.

Both museums are usually open Tuesdays through Sundays, with hours ranging from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Meet the Iowa City City Council Put faces to the names of the seven-member city council that oversees Iowa City’s operations.

Nichole Harris/The Daily Iowan The Iowa City City Council is composed of seven elected councilors that meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

Together, they make decisions on matters important to students such as downtown housing construction and environmental projects. The council typically holds a work session at 5 p.m. followed by a formal meeting at 7 p.m. Three councilors represent the districts of the city, three are elected at large, and the mayor is a previous member elected by fellow councilors to serve for a two-year term.

Bruce Teague Mayor Bruce Teague was elected into his first two-year term as mayor in 2020 after sitting on the council for a little over a year.

Teague founded Caring Hands & More LLC, a service agency that designs plans of care for

community members, and CHARM Homes.

Mazahir Salih was elected mayor pro tempore in 2020 after sitting on the council for two years. She is widely cited as the first Sudanese woman in the country to be elected to public office. Outside of the council, Salih is a community organizer at the Center for Worker Justice and an oncall EEG technician at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Laura Bergus was Laura Bergus elected to her first four-year term on the council in 2020. She is a practicing attorney and mediator at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, LLP with a bache-

lor’s degree in anthropology and a J.D. from the UI. Janice Weiner was Janice Weiner elected to her first four-year term on the council in 2020. She has a B.A. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. Additionally, Weiner is a retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer who grew up in Iowa City.

Pauline Taylor was Pauline Taylor elected to her first four-year term on the council in January 2016 and is currently in her second term, representing District A. Outside of the council, she works as a regis-

tered nurse at UIHC.

Susan Mims was elected to her first four-year term on the council in January 2010 and is currently in her third term, representing District B. She has a B.S. in biomedical engineering and a M.S. in industrial engineering from the UI. John Thomas was John Thomas elected to his first fouryear term in January 2016 and is currently in his second term, representing District C. He is a retired landscape architect and currently a board member for Friends of Hickory Hill Park.

Live shows in Iowa City The University of Iowa campus spills into downtown Iowa City, where, under normal circumstances, there is never a shortage of entertainment. Professional and community theater venues dot the Iowa City map and opportunities to hear live music are abundant every weekend downtown. All creators from indie filmmakers to photographers are able to thrive in the scenic, welcoming atmosphere Iowa City provides.

Theaters The Englert Located at 221 E. Washington St., The Englert Theater is an ideal entertainment venue in Iowa City, and hosts events every week. Featured performances include comedians, magicians, singers, lecturers, workshops, and community discussions. Upcoming fall 2020 events include stand-up comedian Tig Notaro and musician Lilly Hiatt. The Englert also hosts the Witching Hour Festival in the fall.

Hancher Auditorium Hancher Auditorium is the largest performing arts venue on campus. Events are postponed until 2021, but will offer virtual events. The theater presents music, dance, lectures, and theater in normal circumstances, and offers reduced student ticket prices for most events.

Riverside Theater From classical theater to new works, Riverside Theater presents professional performances from September through April. The venue has left their Gilbert Street location and will partner with area venues to put on shows in their upcoming season. The nonprofit theater employs over 100 actors a year

FilmScene For students in search of a unique venue to see new, old, independent or international movies, FilmScene is the place to go. The cinema has two locations in Iowa City, one smaller venue at 118 E. College St., on the Pedestrian Mall, and at the brand new FilmScene at the Chauncey at 404 E. College St. FilmScene is a nonprofit organization that works with Bijou Film Board, a student-run organization.

Music Gabe’s With events all throughout the week, live music can be viewed in an intimate setting at Gabe’s on 330 E. Washington St. The venue has booked artists for the fall including Caskey in September and Misery Signals in November. Average ticket prices range between $10-$20.

The Mill Restaurant Located on 120 E. Burlington St., The Mill offers an abundance of live performances, from open-mics to live music, in an intimate setting ideal for relaxing or jamming on the weekend. The venue features both local talent and touring artists.

Navigating a new home away from home UI International Programs offers resources to students from around the world to help Hawkeyes feel at home in a new city.

International students at the University of Iowa have multiple resources available to them to help ease their transition to campus, including programs and staffers in International Student and Scholar Services. These resources are available for students year-round to help international Hawks acclimate to life on campus, in Iowa City, and in a new country.

The UI enrolled 2,411 international students in spring 2020. To help international students adjust to living in the U.S., UI International Programs has a

Guide to Living in Iowa City, additional information on cultural adjustment, and a program called Life in Iowa.

The Guide to Living in Iowa City covers often confusing information about the city, such as banking, transportation systems, communications services, housing, safety, and more. The cultural-adjustment information covers how to cope with culture shock, nonverbal communication, American customs, and other important tips and suggestions.

workshops in academics, cultural events, career information, and social events throughout the year. It also includes intercultural training opportunities through workshops and programs for students, staff, and faculty to increase awareness, build skills, and recognize ways culture impacts behaviors, values, and interactions inside and outside the classroom.

Student-life organizations and activities also work to welcome international students by providing community groups on campus such as Friends for International Students, International Women’s Club, Friends Without Borders, and many more. These clubs and organizations build connections for students all across the university — whether that be with mentors, peers, or new friends.

Dancing the day and night away

Coming up on its 27th year, the University of Iowa’s largest student organization has raised millions of dollars for pediatric cancer patients.

For Dance Marathon, the largest student organization on the University of Iowa campus, everything is “For the Kids.”

Now in its 27th year, Dance Marathon has raised more than $30 million for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplants. All donations go to the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to benefit the kids.

Dance Marathon hosts its Big Event every year in the Iowa Memorial Union, where over 4,000 participants will stand and dance for over 24 hours as they continue to fundraise.

The event involves a whirlwind of emotions and pride as students meet the families they dance for and support the true heroes of their efforts — the kids. The Big Event also includes activities for dancers throughout the 24-hour period.

To be a dancer and attend the 24-hour Big Event, students must raise over $500.

University of Iowa students have many different opportunities to connect with their faith on campus or throughout Iowa City.

Whether students are looking to continue lifelong worshipping practices, or just curious about spirituality, the University of Iowa and City of Iowa City both offer a variety of options that enable community members to get in touch with their faith.

The Association of Campus Ministries at the UI has nine different participating ministries: • Chabad-Lubchavit • Geneva Campus Ministry • InterVarsity Christian Fellowship • Iowa Hillel (Jewish) • Lutheran Campus Ministry (ELCA) • Newman Catholic Student Center • Orthodox Christian Fellowship • St. Paul’s Lutheran Chapel (LCMS) Other faith-based student organizations include Salt Company, the Muslim Student Association, the Imam Mahdi Association, and Tau Omega Catholic Service Fraternity. Many of these groups have informational sessions for prospective members to kick off each semester.

Areas of Religious Study The UI Religious Studies Department and Philosophy Department offer a variety of coursework for students who seek to dive deeper into religious history and understanding of spirituality. Select courses highlight various religions and traditions.

Journalism thrives at the UI

Dive into a career in journalism, covering every element of the UI and Iowa City communities with The Daily Iowan or KRUI.

The Daily Iowan and KRUI are two well-established organizations for students who intend to pursue a career in journalism, or those who are simply interested in creating content while learning about the community, can easily get involved.

The DI is a 152-year-old, student-run news organization in the Adler Journalism Building that is independent from the university. It has won various awards, including the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2020 Newspaper of the Year and Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper from the Society

of Professional Journalists for the 2019 calendar year.

Students can work in paid positions at the DI producing print, broadcast, and digital content about the university and the local communities. It publishes a daily print paper and online news, opinions, sports, politics, arts, photo, and films sections daily.

KRUI Radio (89.7 FM) is the other main journalism outlet on campus, focused on radio broadcast and producing audio content. Known as Iowa City’s “sound alternative,” it originated in 1952.

According to its website, KRUI seeks to provide the

Iowa City community with a “unique programming alternative in music, news, and sports.” A majority of its broadcasts showcase lesser-known music and specialty shows that feature a wide range of topics — “everything from funk to post-modern classical stylings.”

Embracing cultural identities Four cultural centers and over 100 different student organizations on campus support the success of underrepresented populations at the University of Iowa.

The four different multicultural houses on campus help foster the success of underserved populations. Each center provides a “home-away-from-home,” atmosphere to students, supporting them both academically and socially.

Each center can be utilized for student organization events, cultural-education resources, and as a safe-haven for students to decompress. All four centers contain amenities which include a fully-stocked kitchen, a living and dining room, wireless internet, Netflix and Pandora, computers, printers, TVs, and board games.

Afro-American Cultural Center Founded in 1968, the Afro-American Cultural Center, dubbed “Afro-House,” is a welcoming and inclusive area for Black students to feel at home. Located at 303 Melrose Ave., Afro House provides opportunities and programs for the community to encourage and preserve Black culture. Events and programs the center assists in providing include the Being Black at Iowa Project, Hair to Heart, and Sunday Dinners in coordination with the Black Student Union. Other affinity student organizations for the center include the Black Campus Ministry, the African Student Association, and the Caribbean Student Association among others.

Asian Pacific American Cultural Center Established in 2003, the APACC aids the Asian American and Pacific Islander community at the UI in engaging with other minority groups and encouraging education. Located at 223. Lucon Dr., APACC’s vision is to foster community, enrich culture, and maintain a comforting place of solace for student identities affiliated with the center. Programs associated with the center seek to empower community members and breed diversity, positivity, and activism. The Asian American Student Union and the South Asian Student Alliance are among some of the affinity based organizations for the center.

The Pride Alliance Center, or “Pride House,” opened its doors in the fall of 2006, as a home for LGBTQ students to connect and foster an inclusive environment. Located at 125 Grand Avenue Ct. Pride House’s mission is to encourage the success and well-being of LGBTQ students at the UI by providing a safe and inclusive atmosphere to all students. The center provides a supportive environment and an area for students to openly exist and engage within the community.

Affiliated groups with the center include Spectrum UI, Gamma Rho Lambda, and Love Works.

The over 100 different multicultural student organizations at the UI provide programming, services, educational and cultural experiences, as well as events to the entire UI community. Organizations and centers are open to all UI community members as a resource for academic and other purposes. Multicultural programming groups include student-issue based organizations, major/field-ofstudy based organizations, or greek life within the National Panhellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council.

Resources for all gender and sexual identities Gender-inclusive housing and an LGBTQ health clinic are among the services offered for transgender and nonbinary students.

The University of Iowa prides itself on its efforts to be an LGBTQ ally, and has several resources that aim to foster a welcoming environment for transgender and nonbinary students.

In MyUI, students can change their preferred name, pronouns, sex, and gender.

To make the change, select the “Student Information” tab at the top of the MyUI page. Scroll down to the “Student Life Management” section, and students can select either “Preferred Name and Pronouns,” or “Sex and Gender.” Students can then select their preferences from a drop-down menu or enter their responses and click the update button.

Students can find a map of all single-user and gender-inclusive restrooms on campus on the university website.

For transgender, genderqueer,

gender non-conforming, and/or nonbinary students planning to live on campus at the UI, University Housing and Dining created Gender-Inclusive Housing, which allows students to apply for university housing spaces without regard to their gender. Information about Gender-Inclusive Housing can be found on the University Housing and Dining website.

The Pride Alliance Center is another resource for LGBTQ students.

Your student representatives The Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate and Professional Student Government both represent the University of Iowa student body of more than 30,000 Hawkeyes.

The University of Iowa Undergraduate Student Government is responsible for representing more than 20,000 undergraduate students. The student organization is made up of 30 at-large senators, constituency senators, executive, and judicial members.

USG allocates $1.6 million from the student-activity fee that every undergraduate stu-

dent at the UI pays. They delegate and oversee the funds to over 500 student organizations and various events on campus. Members of USG also advocate for UI students to Iowa lawmakers and university administrators.

UI students elect senators and top leaders of the organization every spring. Connor Wooff and Mara Smith were

elected in April and will serve as USG’s president and vice president, respectively, in the 2020-21 academic year.

Smith and Wooff are focused on increasing student engagement with USG as well as expanding diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Incoming first-year students can apply for a senator seat and be selected in the fall.

Hawks set eyes on 2020 election There are various student organizations available for Hawkeyes who want to learn more about politics and campaigning as the 2020 election season nears. students, fundraising, and voter registration — all of which will become even more of a priority as they gear up for Election Day. The College Republicans spread Republican and conservative messages across campus by organizing social events and volunteering. The group focuses on helping to provide students with job and internship opportunities.

The Young Democratic Socialists at Iowa is a youth chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. This is an activist organization, and the group primarily focuses on the issues of racial, gender, economic, and environmental equity locally as well as nationally.

There are also nonpartisan political groups on campus, such as Hawk the Vote, the Undergraduate Political Science Association, the political science department’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Committee, and the National Political Science Honors Society, also known as Pi Sigma Alpha.

With the 2020 general election just months away, student groups will be busy canvassing the community and campus, registering students to vote, and working to further their organization’s agenda and get their preferred candidates elected.

Many former presidential candidates were making their stops throughout the state ahead of Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses, and students had invaluable opportunities to work and volunteer for presidential campaigns and to interact with the candidates on an almost regular basis.

There are three main political student groups on campus — the University Democrats, the College Republicans, and the Young Democratic Socialists at Iowa. Each group is student-led and meets regularly. There is also a Turning Point USA chapter on campus.

The purpose of the University Democrats is to work to get Democrats elected to public offices. This group also focuses on bringing educational programs to

On-campus jobs abound There are several opportunities for Hawkeyes to work on the University of Iowa campus.

Student employees are everywhere on the University of Iowa campus: from the front desk in the residence halls to behind the steering wheel of the Cambus.

Over 7,000 student workers are employed on the UI campus every year, with jobs available for any major, skill set, or level of experience. Student employment can help build résumés and provide job experience for students working toward future goals.

On average, undergraduate students who work between 5-20 hours a week have higher GPAs and retention rates, according to University Human Resources. Students working on campus are not permitted to work more than 20 hours a week and must be enrolled in at least one semester hour of classes. Students are allowed to work up to 40 hours over Thanksgiving, winter, spring, and summer breaks.

How to apply Students can seek employment through Handshake, the UI job-recruitment system where students can apply for on- or off-campus jobs and see job postings geared toward their interests. This includes internships and other full-time jobs.

Every semester, the UI Pomerantz Career Center hosts a career fair where students can interact with potential employers, ask questions, and receive applications that can be filled out that day. The Fall Career Fair will be on Thursday, September 24th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Lounge and the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Greek life

Panhellenic Council

The Panhellenic Council includes 14 chapters, and the primary recruitment process takes place over two weekends. Students are able to meet with all of the chapters on campus before this mutual selection process. Registration for primary recruitment takes place over the summer, but students can also try informal recruitment during the spring semester.

Interfraternity Council The Interfraternity Council consists of 20 different chapters on campus. Students interested in joining have many opportunities to do so, because IFC fraternities recruit informally year-round.

Multicultural Greek Council The Multicultural Greek Council governs Greek organizations that represent Latinx, Asian, and LGBTQ communities. Students interested in joining can attend the annual “Meet the Greeks” event.

National Pan-Hellenic Council Six of the historically African American fraternities and sororities at the UI make up the campus National Pan-Hellenic Council. Its fraternities and sororities bring in students through a process called Membership Intake, and students can learn about this at the “Meet the Greeks” event.

Iowa has celebrated over 153 years of Greek Life on its campus. The UI has 49 chapters of Greek Life and four governing councils. There are 27 registered fraternities on campus and 22 registered sororities. About 15 percent of the undergraduate population participates in Greek Life.

Explore a military career with ROTC Hawkeyes interested in a military career can join University of Iowa Air Force and Army ROTC chapters.

The University of Iowa offers two branches of ROTC, Air Force ROTC and Army ROTC.

Air Force ROTC Students in the Air Force ROTC can pursue their education and train to commission as an officer in the Air Force.

Air Force ROTC members must maintain a 2.50 GPA, good health, and fitness to pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.

Students must also take aerospace studies courses to complete their graduation requirements. Air Force ROTC graduates are commissioned as second lieutenants and have over 140 career field options.

Army ROTC Army ROTC allows students to study military-science courses while training to become a successful commission officer. An Army ROTC student must be enrolled full time at the UI, a U.S. citizen, and maintain a 2.50 GPA. Army ROTC allows students to participate in extracurriculars like color guard and intramural events. Upon graduation, ROTC students receive commission as second lieutenants in either the U.S. Army Reserve, National Guard, or active components.

Scholarships are available for both the Air Force and Army ROTCs to pay tuition, mandatory fees, and textbook fees. Students may apply at the AFROTC or Army websites.

Realize Educational and Career Hopes in UI REACH The University of Iowa REACH Program provides support for Hawkeyes with intellectual, cognitive, and learning disabilities.

UI Realizing Educational and Career Hopes, or REACH, is a comprehensive transition program for students ages 18-25 years old with intellectual, cognitive, and learning disabilities.

With an emphasis on an integrated college experience in a caring and structured environment, the program

grants its students a Big Ten college experience and tools to develop independence within their community.

The program focuses on academics, student life, and career development.

REACH offers student-centered planning, integrated courses, and monitored progress.

Participants build skills for the workplace by doing mock interviews and internships and go on field trips and hear from guest presenters. Several employers partner with UI REACH to offer internship and post-program job opportunities. Hy-Vee, the City of Coralville Parks and Recreation, the Sheraton Ho-

tel and UI employers such as the Hawk Shop and dining centers.

Members live in an on-campus residence halls with other REACH students, and participate in social and sporting events, student organizations, and learn about personal safety awareness.

Burge, Catlett, and Hillcrest are the three halls with marketplaces for students to use their meal plans on a variety of food options. Burge, Hillcrest, and Mayflower all have C-stores where students can use their flex meals and Hawk Dollars to purchase food and snacks.

Every residence hall has at least one dedicated area for laundry services. Students must use their Hawk Dollars to wash and dry laundry. Catlett, Currier, Hillcrest, and Mayflower also house fitness centers for students.

Local newspapers, the University of Iowa Off Campus Housing website, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and peer recommendations are all ways to successfully find listings and available spaces. Also, apartment companies in Iowa City are valid resources when a resident is looking for a location that fits their specific needs and preferences.

Students in search of roommates can use social-media platforms such as Facebook to start their search process. Sending out messages and connecting with other students through friends is a great way to find compatible cohabitants.

Many apartment companies also offer roommate search platforms on their website, which can be used to find roommates with the same standards for their living space.

After an apartment has been found and roommates determined, a number of resources exist for students to seek out when navigating the legal and technical components of their lease. Hawkeye hoops carries momentum into 2020-21

Men’s hoops propelled to fight for the Big Ten this coming season.

Luka Garza and the Hawkeyes were ready to make a run.

After Garza posted a historic season in which he earned ESPN’s National Player of the Year honor, Iowa — and every team in the country — had its postseason pulled from them due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Now, the Hawkeyes are looking to make a run when it matters.

Widely regarded as a preseason top-10 team, Iowa will return its entire starting lineup after Garza decided to return after deciding to test the NBA Draft waters.

The Hawkeyes will also return Jordan Bohannon and Jack Nunge, who missed the majority of the 2019-20 season. Nunge tore his ACL in Iowa’s sixth game, and Bohannon elected to redshirt to recover from hip surgery.

After Garza chose to return for another season, the Hawkeyes had their biggest question answered.

Garza averaged 23.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game en route to breaking Iowa’s single-sea-

son points record.

He played even better on the big stage. Garza closed the season by scoring at least 20 points in 16 consecutive Big Ten games.

While Garza’s return certainly means a lot for the Hawkeyes, they will get boosts in other areas as well. CJ Fredrick will have another year of experience after scoring 10.2 points per game and shooting 46.1 percent from 3-point land.

Connor McCaffery served as a pivotal glue guy for Iowa last season, averaging 6.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. He also led the country in assist-to-turnover ratio with a mark of 4.59.

Head coach Fran McCaffery also has point guard Ahron Ulis, shooting guard Tony Perkins, center Josh Ogundele, and small forward brothers Kris and Keegan Murray joining the program.

Throw in sophomores Patrick McCaffery and Joe Toussaint and junior Joe Wieskamp, and McCaffery could have something special brewing in Iowa City.

Women’s hoops looks to continue success after surprising many in 2019-20.

Iowa women’s basketball team dominated at home, winning all 15 of its games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last season.

After coming into the season without three significant players, including Megan Gustafson, from their Elite Eight squad, the Hawkeyes proved all the doubters wrong by finishing the regular season third in the Big Ten. Senior guard Kathleen Doyle exceeded her already high expectations and won the 2020 Big Ten Player of the Year award among other honors. She averaged 18.1 points and 6.2 assists per game.

Doyle was picked 14th in the 2020 WNBA draft for the Indiana Fever, one of three rookies to make Indiana’s final roster.

At center, sophomore Monika Czinano replaced Gustafson and created a force in the post. She averaged 16 points per game and shot 67.9 percent from the field.

Throughout the season, the Hawkeyes had many significant wins. In the non-conference season, the Hawkeyes defeated Princeton and Drake at home and Iowa State in Ames. In the conference season, the Hawkeyes defeated Northwestern, Maryland, and Indiana all in a row.

The Hawkeyes also scored a school-record 108 points against Illinois.

Next season, the Hawkeyes will be without Doyle and two other starters in guard Makenzie Meyer and forward Amanda Ollinger. However, head coach Lisa Bluder’s team should still be strong on both ends of the court.

Senior Alexis Sevillian is set to lead the backcourt, with junior Kate Martin and sophomore Gabbie Marshall contributing significantly as well. Czinano is slated to be a mainstay in the post, but instead of Ollinger helping her out, it will be sophomore McKenna Warnock.

A quick guide to oncampus workouts From intramurals to popular campus rec centers, the University of Iowa offers plenty of exercise opportunities.

Intramurals

Workout spots on campus

Intramural sports can be a great fit for students who aren’t competing in an NCAA sport, but want to stay active, competitive, and a part of a team. This year intramurals are limited to noncontact sports like tennis, e-sports, and geocaching.

To participate, students must purchase an Intramural Sport Membership, which can be done on Iowa’s Recreational Service website. Students can buy a membership by semester for $25 or for a full year for $45. Fifteen-dollar one-day tournament passes, and $10 single-game memberships can also be purchased for short-term activities.

Hawkeyes can participate in four types of leagues — open, women, co-rec, and friendly.

Open teams have no gender restrictions, women teams only allow women, co-rec teams must have the minimum number of male and females, and friendly teams can’t participate in a playoff.

Another component of intramurals, Unified Intramural Sports, pairs intramural sport athletes with Special Olympics Athletes.

Club sports, such as the Iowa Track and Field Club and the Ultimate Frisbee team, also offer an outlet for competitive Hawkeyes to continue in athletics.

Campus Recreation and Wellness Center The biggest rec center on campus, the CRWC boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a 50-foot rock wall, basketball courts, an indoor track, free weights, cardio machines, and the Power Café, home to post-workout smoothies. Group fitness classes are also offered at CRWC and the Fieldhouse free to students. Workout space and group fitness slots must be reserved online in advance.

Fitness East This smaller, less busy workout area is convenient for those living in east side residence halls.

The Fieldhouse The go-to destination for those living on the west side, the Fieldhouse is home to racquetball and basketball courts, and a swimming pool, and was the university’s main exercise facility until the CRWC was built in 2010.

Hawkeye home advantage Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye Arena are two notable campus landmarks and host a number of sports throughout the year.

There’s nothing quite like a football game inside Kinnick Stadium.

The combination of AD/DC’s “Back in Black” and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” ringing over the sound system, the Hawkeyes swarming out onto the field, the now iconic tradition where the stadium waves at the onlooking children’s hospital. It’s one of the best venues in all of college football.

Last season, Iowa debuted the remodeled north endzone, including a new video board. The new look creates an even more intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams.

Iowa went 6-1 at home last season, only dropping its Oct. 12 matchup with Penn State. The Hawkeyes took down a previously undefeated Minnesota team Nov. 16, the latest in a long line of victories against top-10 opponents in Kinnick for Iowa.

Another hub for Hawkeye sports is Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Carver is the home to the Iowa men’s and women’s basketball teams, the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams, and the wrestling team.

The 2019-20 academic year was a very impressive time for the Hawkeyes at Carver. The women’s basketball team went undefeated at home for the second straight year and extended its victory streak at Carver to 36 games. The wrestling team went undefeated at Carver last season, finishing with an unblemished 7-0 record.

Joining in on the dominance at Carver was the men’s basketball team. Iowa men’s hoops finished the season 14-2 at home.

Also the usual site for some graduation ceremonies, Carver is an integral part of the University of Iowa campus.

New era at quarterback for Hawkeye football Spencer Petras is expected to take over as the starter under center after Nate Stanley’s graduation.

After legendary Iowa football coach Hayden Fry died Dec. 17, the Hawkeyes honored him in their 49-24 victory over USC in the Holiday Bowl.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz decided to strip the Tigerhawk off the side of Iowa’s helmets for the game as a tribute to Fry — who created the logo — and put a patch on the back of the helmets to honor former Iowa athletic director Bump Elliott, who died Dec. 7.

The win in the Holiday Bowl was a fitting end for Iowa’s season. The Hawkeyes, led by third-year starting quarterback Nate Stanley, finished the season 10-3 and won their thirdstraight bowl game.

A marathon victory in Ames over Iowa State and a win over a top-10 Minnesota team at

Kinnick Stadium were other highlights.

Moving forward, Spencer Petras is expected to take over as the new starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes after Stanley’s graduation.

He has plenty of firepower on offense, whenever it ends up taking the field.

The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 that fall sports in the conference had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A spring football season is still a possibility.

When games are played running back Tyler Goodson will lead the backfield after taking over as the starter toward the end of last season. At receiver, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Brandon Smith, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Nico Ragaini form maybe the best receiving corps the Hawkeyes have had under Ferentz.

Defensively, Iowa lost several key starters, including A.J. Epenesa, Geno Stone, Michael Ojemudia, and Kristian Welch. Next season’s defense will be led by defensive end Chauncey Golston, who finished with 47 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss last season.

Iowa wrestling rises above competition The Hawkeyes won their 36th Big Ten title and were primed to add a national championship.

Last season proved to be another successful year for Iowa wrestling. In a season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hawkeyes went 13-0 in dual meets during the regular season.

Ten of the top-ranked Hawkeyes’ victories came against ranked foes, including a comeback win over No. 2 Penn State in front of a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd.

Iowa also found success at the 2019 Midlands Championships. Five Hawkeyes won their individual weight bracket. Iowa also claimed the tournament’s team crown, shattering the previous scoring record of 189 with a team score of 196.5.

Although the Hawkeyes did not get to compete at the 2020 NCAA Championships, they still made strides in the postseason. individual Big Ten titles. Graduated Hawkeye Pat Lugo also won an individual title.

Before the tournament was canceled, all 10 Hawkeyes in head coach Tom Brands’ regular lineup qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships.

Lee, Marinelli, and Lugo were all seeded at the top of their respective weight classes. Nine of the 10 NCAA-qualifying Hawkeyes were seeded in the top ten of their weight class.

Nine of Iowa’s 10 starting wrestlers from last year will be returning for the 2020-21 campaign.

In addition to Lee at 125-pounds and Marinelli at 165-pounds, 133-pound senior Austin DeSanto, 141-pound junior Max Murin, 157-pound senior Kaleb Young, 174-pound senior Michael Kemerer, 184-pound sophomore Abe Assad, 197-pound junior Jacob Warner, and 285-pound sophomore Tony Cassioppi will all don the black and gold singlet again this season.

Field hockey to chase natl title this spring After one of the most successful years in recent memory the field hockey team is back for more this season.

In mid-September, after Iowa’s field hockey team dropped a close home game to the Duke, 2-1 in double overtime at Grant Field, its players believed they had lost their chance to defeat the Blue Devils.

But in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Hawkeyes got a second chance. And they didn’t miss it.

Exactly two months after the loss, the two teams met once more with a ticket to the Elite Eight on the line.

Cierra Smith netted two goals of the season while Leah Zellner added another to propel Iowa to a 3-2 win.

In the quarterfinal matchup, the team faced another ACC power, the North Carolina Tar Heels. Hawkeye freshman Sofie Stribos scored the first goal but the Tar Heels found the back of the net twice after that to send the Hawkeyes home.

Iowa finished the 2019 season ranked sixth in the country with a record of 17-5, a Big Ten Tournament

title, and a share of the Big Ten regular-season crown.

While the Hawkeyes graduated five seniors including All-American honoree and Regional Player of the Year Katie Birch and goaltender Leslie Speight. Leading scorers Lokke Stribos and fellow All-American Maddy Murphy will be back this year.

The Iowa coaching staff was named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association West Region Coaching Staff of The Year. An elite coaching staff and a number of talented returning players suggest it will be another strong season for Iowa field hockey once it can take place.

Hawkeye baseball cut short in 2020

A fast start to the 2020 baseball season by the Hawkeyes was brought to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iowa baseball seemed to be on a road to success in 2020.

The Hawkeyes started the season with a 10-5 record and picked up victories over two top-20 teams in historically relevant North Carolina and Duke programs.

Head coach Rick Heller looked to make 2020 his seventh straight season earning at least 30 wins. He had also won his 900th game as a head coach with a dominant 15-2 victory over Grand View after the Duke victory.

But as quickly as the season started, it ended.

After sweeping Kansas in a double midweek series in early March, the remainder of the season was canceled due to concerns about the coronavirus.

The end of the season hit the pitching staff and the rest of the lineup hard.

Pitcher Grant Judkins followed his stellar junior season up with another solid performance on the bump by posting a 3.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 21.0 innings.

Fellow starter Jack Dreyer missed the ma-

jority of the 2019 season with Tommy John surgery but bounced back in 2020 to finish with a 2-1 record and 3.32 ERA. At the plate, Izaya Fullard continued the success he found in 2019, leading the team with a .400 average. He also led Iowa with 21 RBIs and slashed .400/.449/.583.

Zeb Adreon followed Fullard by hitting .333.

The Hawkeyes’ lineup boasted seven players with a batting average over .275 (min. eight games).

Luckily for Iowa, its seniors have an opportunity to return to the diamond. The NCAA gave spring-sport seniors an extra year of eligibility. Winter-sport athletes, however, did not receive an extra year.

With the terms of the upcoming MLB Draft still in question, the Hawkeyes’ future is still blurry. Heller said all but two seniors have said they will return if they don’t sign professional contracts.

Before they return, though, there’s a lot to pay attention to off the field that will impact how things happen on it.

Softball looks to continue turnaround The team saw a strong start to last season cut short

Iowa softball endured a difficult decade after the departure of legendary coach Gayle Blevins. However, the recent hire of Renee Gilispie has brought energy back to the program.

After a year of progress, this season looked like it could be a breakout one for the Hawkeyes. The team finished an impressive 17-5 after an exhausting travel schedule and had some solid wins.

The COVID-19 pandemic ended Iowa softball’s stellar and unexpected start to its season before it could really get going.

When the team was on the field, several Hawkeyes boasted impressive numbers.

Great pitching and strong hitting were two things the Hawkeyes built their game around. Seniors Allison Doocy and Lauren Shaw split time at pitcher, with Doocy sporting a 1.54 ERA and Shaw

boasting an ERA of 1.71. Meanwhile, two freshmen led the team with their bats, with Nia Carter having a .509 batting average and Kalena Burns leading with 29 hits.

Catcher Kit Rocco and Aralee Bogar at second base were key contributors in the field, playing solid defense and helping the pitchers. With everyone keeping their eligibility for next season, it looks as if Iowa will have the opportunity to bring back its entire team, which should continue to gain momentum and experience with growing confidence.

The team will look to make an impact in the Big Ten and break into the top half of the league after not getting a game against any Big Ten competition last season. An NCAA appearance is a possibility if the team can live up to expectations.

Soccer ready to build off historic season

After making the NCAA Tournament, the Hawkeyes are prepared to win despite several changes on the roster.

Last season, the Iowa soccer team made the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history.

Under the leadership of 13 seniors and head coach Dave DiIanni, the Hawkeyes went 15-5-1, which included a nine-game winning streak to start the season.

They finished the regular season fifth in the Big Ten and bowed out in the NCAA Tournament at Kansas.

During the season, the Hawkeyes averaged 2.14 goals per game while giving up 0.90 goals per game.

Senior forward Devin Burns and senior midfielder and defender Natalie Winters led the team in goals with six each. Sophomore forward Samantha Tawharu and senior forward Emma Tokuyama led the team in assists with five each.

Though the Hawkeyes are losing many seniors next year, they are primed for another good season.

Expect Tawharu is set to lead the forwards, along with sophomore Gianna Gourley. At midfield, juniors Hailey Rydberg and Josie Durr should be the leaders.

On the back line, the defenders are set to hold up the tradition of being a team known for defense, with juniors Sara Wheaton and Riley Whitaker and sophomore Samantha Cary leading the way.

The most dramatic and interesting change of the season will be the goalkeeper. After four solid seasons from Claire Graves, her replacement is slated to be sophomore Monica Wilhelm.

Track and Field

Both teams lost key pieces after last season but hope to see continued improvement.

After finishing the 2019 season in differing fashions, both Iowa cross country teams will be look to continue to grow off last season.

That is, whenever the upcoming season ends up taking place.

The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 that fall sports in the conference had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A spring season for cross country is still a possibility.

The women’s team is returning most of its key contributors, but lose leader Megan Schott. The women finished ninth in the Big Ten last season and will look to improve upon that number.

Sophomore Leah Kralovitz was the sensation of last season, becoming the top runner for the Hawkeyes at certain meets, including the Big Ten Championships. She finished 42nd in that meet and was the seventh quick-

est freshman. She had an even better regional performance, finishing 16th overall and first among freshmen.

The squad returns plenty of upperclassmen, with team top five runners Elyse Prescott, Anna Hosteler and Ashley Bryja looking to make an impact and lead the Hawkeyes up the leaderboards.

Meanwhile, the men’s team will be rebuilding after losing several key seniors but has some solid pieces to build off. The loss of Nate Mylenek will hurt the most, who led the team for 10 straight races and made it to the NCAA Championships.

The team loses three other seniors but will still have senior Noah Healy and junior Spencer Smith to lean on. The two had personal bests at the NCAA regionals, landing 39th and 53rd.

Another stellar season for the Track Hawks was cut short by COVID-19.

Although the 2019-20 collegiate track season came to a halt less than 24 hours before the NCAA Indoor Championships, an abrupt end can’t detract from how the Hawkeyes made monumental strides on the leaderboards last season.

Right from the start of the indoor season, senior hurdler Jaylan McConico became the talk of the season. Out of seven meets he competed in, McConico repeatedly took first place, with his time at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 15 (7.60) having nabbed his 60-meter hurdles spot at nationals. That time also put McConico second in the division — an achievement that also granted him multiple Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors.

But McConico wasn’t alone in posting nationals-qualifying marks. Another standout Hawkeye was sophomore Wayne Lawrence, a dynamic sprinter poised to compete in two events at the indoor championship. He and his 4x400-meter relay teammates, consisting of seniors Dejuan Frye, Antonio Woodard, and Raymund Clarke, ranked fourth nationally (3:04.91).

Additionally, Lawrence’s 400-meter time (45.56) earned him third in the division, while his PR in the 200-meters (20.87) still placed him in the top 16. His major moment in the season came at Big Ten Indoor Championships, where Lawrence snagged two first-place titles in the 400-meters and 600-meters, and a third with his relay group. That effort boosted the Iowa men’s team to second overall in the Big Ten Conference.

And, like past seasons, among the impactful was Laulauga Tausaga. The Iowa-record-breaking thrower finished her se-

nior season at number two in the shot put (17.96) and number nine in the weight throw (22.21).

More Hawkeyes who excelled tremendously this year and planned to compete at nationals included senior multieventer Jenny Kimbro in the pentathlon (4269 points), senior multi-eventer Will Daniels in the heptathlon (5689 points), and senior sprinter Mallory King in the 800-meters (2:05.12).

All things considered, the 2019-20 regular indoor season should be remembered for the stellar performances from every Iowa thrower, hurdler, and sprinter alike, between the redshirted freshmen and hardened seniors.
