Student government advocates for undergrad and grad interests

Split between undergraduate and graduate bodies, the University of Iowa’s student governments represent and advocate for students.

Undergraduate Student Government represents more than 20,000 undergraduate students at the University of Iowa. The governing body allocates funds to the student organizations at the university and votes on issues that impact the undergraduate student body. New senators and executives are elected to USG each spring. Regan Smock and José Muñiz Jr. were elected to serve as president and vice president for the 2021-22 school year. Smock and Murñiz Jr. ran on a platform of transparency, accountability, collaboration, community and compassion, and previously told the DI they are committed to making a college education more accessible, more inclusive, and more uplifting at the university. Incoming freshmen can apply to be a first-year senator in the fall. Graduate and Professional Student Government represents over 10,000 graduate and professional students. The main goal of GPSG is to improve the experience for graduate and professional students at the University of Iowa. GPSG advocates on behalf of all graduate and professional students to other governing bodies, such as the state Board of Regents, administrators at the UI, and local and state legislators. The current president of the legislative body is Mackensie Graham.
