Looking back on the 2020-21 school year A ROCKY START TO FALL Students came back to a hybrid semester in August, with daily life on campus looking a lot different from years past. Large classes were held virtually. Masks were required in buildings and in the classroom. Professors and students alike were conducting much of their business from home.

Still, the University of Iowa saw an explosion of COVID-19 cases in the early fall.

Before the end of the second week of classes, the university had surpassed 1,000 self-reported cases among students. The bulk of the spread was blamed on the nightlife downtown, and in late August, Former UI President Bruce Harreld wrote a letter to downtown businesses imploring them to follow safety measures to mitigate COVID-19 spread.

FOOTBALL’S B1G RETURN When the semester began, it seemed the UI would have a football-free fall. The Big Ten Conference announced in August that it would postpone all fall sports, citing pandemic concerns. The announcement brought disappointment among fans and athletes, including a lawsuit from eight Nebraska football players to reverse the decision.

Then in September, the conference did just that. The Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to resume the football season starting in late October. The season came with stipulations: players could opt out, there would be daily testing, and inevitably several games were canceled after players tested positive.

After an impressive 6-2 season, the Hawkeyes were set to play in the Music City Bowl in December.

But a spike in COVID-19 cases on the opposing Missouri team caused the game to be canceled, bringing an abrupt end to the season.

THE SEARCH FOR A NEW PRESIDENT In October 2020, former UI President Bruce Harreld made the surprise announcement that he’d be retiring early, initiating a search process to find the next president. Harreld’s contract was originally extended into 2023, and he planned to stay on as long as was needed to find a new president.

Fall 2020 was the first full semester during the pandemic, and it came with a lot of new challenges and experiences for Hawkeyes.

Over the next several months, the state Board of Regents and a search committee sifted through dozens of applicants and eventually narrowed down to four finalists. After formal interviews, public forums, and soliciting feedback from the UI community, the regents selected Barbara Wilson, the executive vice president and vice president of academic affairs at the University of Illinois system. Wilson will step into her new role on July 15.

A HISTORIC ELECTION Iowa had a front-row seat to the Democratic presidential primary in 2019 and early 2020, with the first-in-the-nation caucuses. As the election moved from the primaries to the general election, several races in Iowa were closely watched by both parties hoping to win the House and the Senate.

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump held rallies in Des Moines in the days leading up to the 2020 election, and candidates for Senate and Congress in Iowa campaigned aggressively in the weeks and months before Nov. 3.

VACCINE ROLLOUT By the middle spring semester, after nearly a year in a pandemic, the end appeared to be in sight. All Iowans over 16 became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on April 5, and the UI opened vaccine clinics for students soon after. By the end of the semester, close to half of all Johnson County residents had been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Iowa City, one of a few cities in Iowa that had a mask mandate, lifted the mandate on May 18 after Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that vaccinated people did not have to wear masks in most situations, and many of the summer events and celebrations that were canceled in 2020 are set to return this summer.

Resources available to first-generation students at the UI If you are the first student in your family navigating college life, there are many helpful resources available to you at the UI

UI continues practices to mitigate spread of With COVID-19 still a relevant issue in the Iowa City community, the University of Iowa will bring initiatives to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 into the 2021-2022 school year.

Since March 2020, the University of Iowa has implemented various initiatives to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the campus community and adjacent areas.

The UI has worked to slow the spread of COVID-19 by requiring students and employees to wear a mask when inside campus buildings and practice social distancing. The university also provided quarantine and isolation housing for on-campus students and helped with the allocation and distribution of vaccines.

On May 19, the UI lifted its mask requirement for fully vaccinated people. Fully vaccinated people aren’t required to wear face masks or social distance in most UI facilities, excluding the UI Hospitals and Clinics and CAMBUS. The university will be returning to an on-campus, face-to-face residential experience for the fall 2021 semester, and is updating current and future students, families, faculty, and staff regarding the semester and any information that may indicate a change in proposed plans.

The UI plans to offer primarily face-to-face instruction, excluding most classes that have an enrollment of more than 150 students.

Decisions regarding face masks, social distancing, and other health and safety measures for the fall semester will be based on the advice of the state Board of Regents; the

Iowa and Johnson County departments of public health; the Big Ten Conference; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Based on a policy from the regents, the UI won’t be mandating COVID-19 vaccinations for students nor employees, but the university heavily encourages everyone who can be vaccinated to do so.

Going into fall 2021, the UI will continue to test symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals with a known COVID-19 exposure in coordination with Johnson County Public Health.

The UI plans to offer primarily face-to-face instruction fall 2021 semester

First, University Housing offers a first-generation Living Learning Community. This LLC puts you on a residence floor with other first-generation students. The LLC can be a great way to connect early and make friends with other students in similar situations.

The LLC is located in Stanley Residence Hall, which is situated on the central part of campus near two of the dining halls.

Iowa Edge is a three-day program targeted for first-generation students and students of various other underrepresented groups. This program is designed to help underrepresented students adjust to life and succeed at the UI. Attending the program could be helpful in aiding your transition to college while also connecting you with other students before the start of the academic year.

TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded program that can also help aid you in navigating important college-related tasks.

Such tasks include filing for FAFSA, applying to postgraduate and professional programs, and finding additional sources for financial aid and scholarships.

Finally, the Undergraduate Student Government has an elected First-Generation Constituency Senator serve in the student senate. You can reach out to this student representative for further guidance and to also voice your concerns related to being a first-generation student at the UI.

Making campus accessible: Student Disability Services

resources for underrepresented students The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and other programs offer services to underserved Hawkeyes to enhance their college experience.

Student Support Services helps those involved a select group of African American, Alaskan Division of Diversity, maintain strong partnerships with campus and Native, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Equity, and Inclusion Iowa City resources. This program has been Islander, Latino/a, first-generation, and LGBTQ+ The University of Iowa’s Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion brings central leadership and resources on campus to provide an environment for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The division consists of the Center for Diversity and Enrichment, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and Diversity Resources. Every year, the division provides services from student programs to scholarship opportunities.

The division recently welcomed Liz Tovar, who was appointed from an interim role to the executive officer for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

UI Diversity Councils are part of the representation of communities that the division serves across campus. Seven councils are open to students and faculty who identify as a member of each specific group. The diversity councils include the African American Council, the Council on Disability Awareness, the Council of the Status of Women, the LGBTQ+ Council, the Native American Council, the Pan Asian Council, and the Latinx Council.

funded through federal grants by the U.S. Department of Education since 1977. TRIO Student Support Services provides for students who are first-generation, who demonstrate academic need or low-income, and have a verified disability.

The Upward Bound Project, which is also federally funded, guides first-generation and low-income high school students from schools around the UI in their preparation for postsecondary education opportunities.

According to the UI, the Upward Bound Project began in 1964, and has been present at the university since 1966. Like TRIO, the Upward Bound Project provides opportunities for future Hawkeyes. Some free of cost benefits of the program are individual and small-group tutoring, academic counseling, two ACT exam fee waivers and four SAT test fee waivers, FAFSA assistance, and summer enrichment opportunities.

Iowa Edge

Also housed in the division is Iowa Edge, a week-long introductory program leading up to the first day of UI classes. The selected group of TRIO Student Support incoming students will meet supporting campus Services and Upward Bound leaders and work to develop leadership skills to utilize in and outside of the UI. TRIO Student Support Services works with Iowa Edge allows participants to build a students at the University of Iowa and currently community with a group of peers before serves 350 undergraduate students. Advantage Iowa Scholars The Advantage Iowa is a merit-based scholarship awarded to incoming first-year students who come from diverse backgrounds.

UI students can apply on the Admissions Profile on the MyUI portal. Because funds are limited, the UI urges students to start their applications as soon as October. As part of the scholarship application, the Advantage Iowa Awards funds can increase if the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is filed by Dec. 1.

LGBTQ+ Resources The UI offers resources for LGBTQ+ students to feel at home at Iowa.

Students can find a map of all single-user and gender-inclusive restrooms on the university’s website. University Housing and Dining also offers gender-inclusive on-campus living options for students.

In MyUI, students can change their preferred names, pronouns, sex, and gender. To make the modification, select the “Student Information” tab on MyUI and click on the “Name/Pronouns” square.

The Pride Alliance Center has said their spot on campus is a “home away from home” for students. The Pride House, located on Grand Avenue Court, is a place for students to gather and share in community events.

Student Disability Services provides accommodations for students with disabilities to enhance their accessibility and success at the UI.

To bridge the accessibility gap in learning, the University of Iowa offers Student Disability Services, a service offering academic support and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Student Disability Services can help students with disabilities determine accommodations that could help them thrive in the classroom. Students can acquire these accommodations in their courses after providing their instructor with a Letter of Accommodation.

Students can apply for accommodations by submitting a Student Disability Services application and documentation from a health care provider.

Academic Life Navigator Program In collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation and Counselor Education in the College of Education, Student Disability Services also offers the Academic Life Navigator Program.

This program is a resource for students with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD by providing support and teaching skills crucial for success at the UI.

Keeping Hawkeyes Healthy

Students have access to physical and mental health services through Student Health and University Counseling Services.

What health services are available to students on campus?

The University of Iowa offers students both physical and mental health services right on campus. If students want to see a doctor, they can make an appointment with Student Health on the west side of campus. There, students can be seen by licensed doctors and nurses.

If students are looking for assistance with their mental health, the university offers on-campus mental health counseling services. Visits to both Student Health and University Counseling Services are included in students’ tuition, so there are no additional costs for making an appointment.

How do I make an appointment?

Student Health: The Westlawn office is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students can call the Student Health appointment line and schedule a time to come in.

UCS: UCS has several locations across campus. Students can see counselors at the University Capitol Center, Westlawn, Catlett Hall, the Dental Sciences Building, the Boyd Law Building, the Pappajohn Business Building, and the Jacobson Football Operations Building. Counselors are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students can call the office to schedule an initial consultation. After the consultation appointment, students can make a plan with a UCS counselor on which of the university’s mental health services is right for them.

What to know about University Counseling Services

What is UIHC?

UIHC stands for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. UIHC is separate from Student Health, so visits to UIHC are not covered by tuition. Beyond health services, the hospital and clinics associated with the University of Iowa are excellent educational resources, and many students will either work or volunteer with UIHC during their time at Iowa.

Being a college student can be stressful and mentally draining at times, but UCS is a great resource you can use to address these issues.

Q: What types of services does University Counseling Services provide?

A: UCS provides a wide range of services including consultations, individual therapy, group therapy, and relationship therapy. UCS is also a great resource for getting general information about undergoing counseling and therapy as a student. Most services provided by UCS, including individual counseling, are free of charge for students.

Q: I want to start talking to someone and/or attending therapy on a regular basis. What can I do to initiate this process?

A: Call University Counseling Services to schedule a consultation with a UCS staff member. During the consultation, this staff member will help you determine the best path forward for addressing your needs. Some students may receive different modes of therapy or be referred to outside providers depending on their individual needs.

Q: Should I go to University Counseling Services or an outside provider if I want to start talking to someone or attending

therapy sessions?

A: The decision is up to you, but UCS is a great place to start. If the therapy programs offered by UCS aren’t what you need, UCS staff can refer you to providers in the area that work best with your specific insurance plan, clinical needs, and even personality.

Q: What if I want to talk to somebody about an issue, but don’t want to attend regular sessions?

A: University Counseling Services offers QuickAccess appointments, which is a one-time 60-minute appointment with a counselor. You can schedule these appointments anytime from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Q: What if I can’t wait until a scheduled appointment to speak to somebody about an urgent issue?

A: Call University Counseling services to schedule a same-day appointment. These appointments are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis starting at 8 a.m. on weekdays. Depending on your needs, UCS may schedule a consultation.

Barbara Wilson: a new UI President Barbara Wilson was selected to be the 22nd president of theUniversity of Iowa this spring, and took her office in the summer.

The University of Iowa has a new president overseeing the 2021-2022 school year, as Barbara Wilson took over as the top Hawkeye this summer.

Wilson is the third woman to serve as the UI’s president. According to the UI Presidential Search Committee Campus-Wide Survey, 80 percent of more than 300 respondents supported Wilson for the position. Respondents said they believe Wilson is well positioned to handle UI challenges and opportunities.

She was selected by the state Board of Regents in late April and is set to serve a five-year term unless the regents extend her contract. Her annual salary is $600,000. Wilson is a lifelong academic with a background in journalism and communication arts.

She earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1979 and 1985. Wilson then spent 12 years at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a faculty member before she ventured to the University of Illinois System. While there, she served the system in a variety of capacities, including her most recent position as the executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs.

As the 22nd president of the UI, Wilson oversees 31,730 students, 25,287 employees, a sprawling health care system and a reputation as a writing university. She replaced President Bruce Harreld, who held the office from 2015 to 2021.

While at the University of Illinois System, Wilson served as the primary liaison to the University of Illinois Systems Board of Trustees and led two diversity and one sexual misconduct committees.

She also led a system-wide initiative to promote leadership opportunities for women in faculty positions and spearheaded a $2 million initiative to celebrate the impact of the arts and humanities. Wilson also focused on recruitment of underrepresented minority faculty members.

Colleagues and students at the University of Illinois System touted Wilson as a strong leader who embraces connection building in higher education.

In her first year at the UI, she plans to spend time building relationships and trust with the community. At her forum before she was selected, Wilson emphasized that she would form teams composed of students and work to elevate faculty of color and women to more leadership positions.

Iowa state Board Who leads the University of Iowa? of Regents The state Board of Regents govern Iowa’s three public universities and two special schools. Its decisions impact students, faculty, and staff at the UI.

The board oversees the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University, the Iowa School for the Deaf, and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School.

The regents set tuition and housing rates, approve construction on university properties, hire university presidents, and declare states of emergency, such as when they moved all classes virtual at the beginning of the pandemic.

The university named Kevin Kregel permanently to the role of provost and executive vice president in February. Kregel served as interim provost since July 2020. As a UI alum, Kregel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a doctorate in physiology and biophysics. He was appointed a UI faculty member in 1993 and was the departmental executive officer in the Department of Health and Human Physiology. When Kregel was appointed by the UI in the permanent UI provost position, he said he looks forward to building upon the relationships he established during his time as interim provost. He said he wants to continue to deliver an educational experience to UI’s students and to improve the workplace experience for UI faculty.

There are five Republicans, one Democrat, and three independents on the board.

The current student regent, Abigail Crow, is a student at the University of Iowa. The regents have had a student on the board since 1973, when former UI law student Steve Zumbach was appointed.

Liz Tovar, executive officer for diversity, equity, and inclusion, was appointed from the interim position in January. The UI Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides leadership and resources to support the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. Tovar’s position reports to the UI president and provost, and she serves on the president's cabinet.

Vice President for Student Life Sarah Hansen was appointed to her role in March 2020. Hansen previously served as the Office of the Provost Manager of Strategic Programs since October 2019. From August 2016 to October 2019, Hansen held the role of associate vice president for the Office of the Vice President for Abigail Crow, Student Life. Hansen’s position in the Division of UI student Student Life promotes student success and involveregent ment, relationship-rich environments, student employment, career connections, and skill-building.

Senior VP for Finance and Operations Rod Lehnertz UI Senior Vice President for Finance and Operation Rod Lehnertz works with the UI’s administrators to manage the university’s finances and capital improvement projects on campus grounds. Lehnertz also serves as the UI architect, which includes planning the UI’s architecture projects and campus layout decades ahead. Lehnertz was a pioneer in the UI administration during the beginning of the pandemic to aid the financial losses aligned with the UI’s COVID-19 mitigation.

CEO UI Hospitals and Clinics and Associate Vice President Suresh Gunasekaran Suresh Gunasekaran, the associate vice president and CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics, told the UI that he focuses on excellence in teaching, research, and patient care at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Appointed in 2018, Gunasekaran previously served as chief operations officer at the University of Texas Southwestern Health System. Gunasekaran took a large leadership role in UIHC’s response to COVID-19.

He called for Iowans to have hope about the pandemic in a press conference in January. The hospital quickly adjusted to provide services like COVID-19 testing, patient care, and COVID-19 vaccination during the pandemic.

Vice President for Medical Affairs Brooks Jackson Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Carver College of Medicine Brooks Jackson has been in his leadership role at the UI since 2017. Former UI President Bruce Harreld said Jackson was a great team player, collaborator, and communicator when Jackson was appointed in 2017. Jackson’s role at the UI focuses on research, academics, and clinical care. Also working as a pathology professor, Jackson serves on the 24-member American Board of Pathology.

Finding a job on campus The University of Iowa campus has numerous buildings and locations where students can find a quiet place to study, both indoors and outdoors.

Being employed on campus has financial and academic benefits. University of Iowa student employees statistically have higher GPAs, and are more likely to stay in school and graduate on time, according to University Human Resources.

Whether it is a bright and sunny day, or the outdoors is cold and dreary, there is a place for everyone to study on campus.

Main Library

Pentacrest

With more study rooms than the eye can see, the Main Library on campus has everything you need to be successful. This space is a quiet place that helps many students hone their focus, especially when midterm and finals seasons roll around.

Students will commonly see people out on the grass in the middle of campus during the warmer months. Many bring blankets and snacks to enjoy while they study or do homework. Some students even tie hammocks up to the trees.

Adler Journalism Building

Colorful outdoor tables are located between the inner walkways of downtown Iowa City. This area is an easy way to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the nice weather and studying. There are also charging outlets located near these tables.

Handshake is the UI’s primary online recruiting system for jobs and internships. Every student has a Handshake account automatically created for them. Students log in with their HawkID to activate their account. Handshake has several free services such as mock interviews and resume uploads.

The UI’s Pomerantz Career Center holds a career fair every semester, directed at students looking for part-time employment. At the fair, employers interview students and sometimes extend job offers. Last year, more than 30 employers attended, along with over 800 students, according to Pomerantz Career Center.

Downtown Iowa City

This building is located on the east side of campus. It is a wide-open space that is the perfect place to get work done between classes. The tall windows in the rotunda allow lots of light into the study space.

Currier Residence Hall This east-side residence hall is home to a modern and spacious study lounge. It is equipped with booths and tables, multiple individual study rooms, and a computer room. This study lounge is the perfect way to get out of your dorm for a change of study scenery.

Hillcrest Residence Hall For the west side residences, Hillcrest has great lounges to get work done in. With twelve computers available in the ground floor computer lab, this space is open to residences 24/7. However, if you do not live there, access is allowed from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The University of Iowa provides many sexual misconduct resources for those seeking advising or support, both confidential and non-confidential. Sexual misconduct can include, but is not limited to, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.

As alternatives to calling the UI Police Department, students can seek resources both on campus and within the Iowa City area and Johnson County as a whole.

Rape Victim Advocacy Program Located within the Division of Student Life, the Rape Victim Advocacy Program offers confidential, free, and trauma-informed services to members of the UI community.

Among its various resources, the RVAP has a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, therapy, support groups, and advocacy for survivors engaging in medical, legal, and academic responses to violence and reporting assault.

Domestic Violence Intervention Program The Domestic Violence Intervention Program is a Johnson County organization that offers a 24-hour crisis hotline as well.

All services are free and confidential, and the hotline can be used to report personal situations or on behalf of a friend.

Iowa City’s scenic outdoor mall provides boundless options for shopping, dining, and an overall fun place for students to visit.

An iconic part of Iowa City and an outdoor haven for students and residents alike, the Pedestrian Mall is at the heart of downtown life and culture.

More commonly referred to as the Ped Mall, the outdoor plaza was constructed in the 1970s as part of a government-sponsored urban renewal program. The space features a multitude of shopping options, restaurants, bars, live music options, public art, and even a children’s playground.

The Ped Mall is located across from the Old Capitol Mall, stretching from Clinton Street to Linn Street and sandwiched from the north and south between Washington Street and Burlington Street. The traffic-free shopping and restaurant hub was also renovated in 2019, featuring updated infrastructure in addition to the already-existing clusters of plants, trees, and

benches for visitors to relax on within the open space.

Live music can often be heard in the Ped Mall from street musicians and local performers, adding to the scenic space’s inviting ambience.

Stores and boutiques like Textiles, Pitaya, or Ten Thousand Villages make great shopping options, and student-oriented cinema FilmScene provides a fantastic food and entertainment choice.

Food-serving businesses in particular make great use of the spacious area, having set up additional outdoor spaces to make dining safer during COVID-19. Venues such as Aspen Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Donnelly’s Pub, and Brothers Bar and Grill are among the two dozen restaurants and eateries that occupy the Ped Mall.

When in Iowa City, the Ped Mall is a must-visit for any shopping or dining needs.

Hills Bank and Trust Hills Bank and Trust has two offices located in the center of campus — one in the ground floor of the IMU and the other in the Old Capitol Town Center. For UI employees and students with on-campus jobs, Hills Bank offers advantage checking which connects with a student’s IowaOne Card. Other services for UI students include a free checking account, free online and mobile banking and free Xpress transfer.

GreenState Credit Union A little further from campus, the closest GreenState Credit Union is located at 500 Iowa Ave. Formerly known as the Iowa Community Credit Union, GreenState is the biggest credit union in Iowa. All UI students, staff, alumni, Iowa residents, and select Wisconsin and Minnesota residents are eligible for membership. The financial institution offers good rates and low fees in returning profits to members.

National Banks For students who already belong to larger banks or want to set up accounts to manage their finances with more widespread institutions, three different national banks have offices close to campus in downtown Iowa City. New students interested in using public transit should download the Transit app, which shows live updates on bus locations and stop times.

Riding the Cambus is free for UI students, employees, and community members. Cambus also offers on-demand transportation options for people with disabilities, called bionic buses.

The UI offers a free late-night transportation service for students who are out late to safely get home. Students can book Nite Ride through the HawkTools app or its website. A standard ride is free, or students can pay $1 for express service.

Free access to Iowa history in Pentacrest Museums Hawkeyes can discover a rich well of information — from Iowa’s prehistoric creatures to our foundations as a state — in the museums on the Pentacrest.

The University of Iowa features two museums on the Pentacrest: the Museum of Natural History in Macbride Hall and the Old Capitol Museum in the Old Capitol. Both museums are free of charge and open to the public. Both museums have been in operation for more than 150 years and serve to educate the community about Iowa history.

The Museum of Natural History is home to The Museum of Natural History is home to 500 million years of Iowa’s cultural and natural heritage.

Visitors can walk through six different exhibits that cover Iowa history from the Jurassic period to the present and learn how it affects the story of agriculture. The Biosphere Discovery Hub contains 10,000 years of Iowa’s changing natural and cultural landscape and visitors can also view over 1,000 birds on display in the William of Iowa’s cultural and natural heritage and Eleanor Hageboeck Hall of Birds.

The Old Capitol, now a museum, served as Iowa’s first state capitol from 1846-1857 until the state’s capital The Old Capitol served as was changed from Iowa City to Des Moines. The building has been beautifully restored to present period-decoIowa’s first state capitol from rated rooms and a mix of new gallery spaces. The museum leads public outreach initiatives, educational programming, exhibitions, and encourages academic scholarship to emphasize the importance of the humanities.

Because of COVID-19 both museums are currently open for limited hours. They are closed from Sunday to Thursday and open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Old Capitol Mall is a popular food stop for students, partially because it’s located near the Pentacrest and partially because it offers a variety of popular chain restaurants and local Asian cuisines.

For families hoping to explore more, a tour of the Pentacrest Museums is always a unique option. Visitors can see the infamous Rusty the Giant Sloth at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History in Macbride Hall on Clinton Street, or schedule a tour of the historic Old Capitol at the heart of campus.

Nearly every day of the week, residents and visitors are able to find local deals at many of the eateries downtown. A popular option among students are Tuesday and Thursday nights at sushi restaurant Formosa, located in the Ped Mall. They have many sushi rolls offered at prices as low as $3. On Sunday nights, expect to see large groups of people gathered at The Airliner for $1 pizza slices.

Throughout the week, Mexican restaurant Cactus 3 poses many drink and dining deals depending on the day.

Late Night Eats

Iowa City also has many restaurants that stay open late. Pancheros offers Mexican staples such as burritos as late as 3 a.m. Uncle Sun, a great place to get classic Chinese dishes during late night hours, delivers until 2 a.m. One of the busiest places during the nighttime is Mesa Pizza on Washington Street that has many specialty pizzas including a mac & cheese slice.

SWEETS AND TREATS

For those with a sweet tooth, dessert locations are numerous. An award-winning cupcake can be purchased at Molly’s Cupcakes on Clinton Street. For frozen yogurt fans, both Yotopia and Aspen Leaf in the Ped Mall are open for business.

Takeout and Delivery

Food is always at the ready for those looking to order in, too. The Iowa City Downtown District offers a local delivery service called CHOMP. Through this service, patrons are able to order food from a plethora of restaurants and have it delivered to the comfort of their home. Some popular restaurants listed on the CHOMP app include Pop’s BBQ and Donnelly’s Pub. Other delivery services in the Iowa City area include DoorDash, GrubHub and Postmates.

Blick Art Materials is one of the oldest and largest suppliers for art materials in the U.S. and has a location in the Old Capitol Mall. Artists can find paints, brushes and pastels, and mail order art supplies from the primary supplier.

On Washington Street, Target offers groceries and dorm-room essentials. The downsized store includes an order pickup area near the entrance, as well as several self-checkout registers.

c i s u M ues n e V The University of Iowa’s campus spills into downtown Iowa City, where there is never a shortage of entertainment to be explored. Opportunities to hear live music are abundant each and every week, especially on weekends, and events are expected to grow throughout the year as public gatherings become safer. Area music venues have a rich history of hosting famous singers and touring groups in the past.

Live theater and cinema experiences are abundant in Iowa City, and many are offering both in-person and virtual entertainment opportunities. Here are a few highlights to definitely check out: For those looking for a unique movie-going experience, FilmScene is a non-profit venue that often shows independent and indie films. The organization partners with the University of Iowa’s Bijou Film Board to plan screenings that are of interest to UI students. They also offer educational programming, including panels with filmmakers and classes related to filmmaking.

The largest performance venue on campus, Hancher Auditorium, features professional touring performances.

Tickets for UI students are often discounted.

Elray’s Live and Dive Located on Iowa Ave., Elray’s Live and Dive is just a year old and already a well-known music hotspot downtown.

Known primarily for its live country concerts from local and national talent, music from all genres has been played there. Trophy Dads and JB Crockett have both been booked for August.

Gabes On the floor above the bar, Gabe’s hosts events throughout the week. Live music can be viewed in an intimate setting at the location on 330 E. Washington St. and has booked both touring and local talent. In its long history, the bar has hosted famous bands including Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins.

Outdoor live music opportunities For those seeking safe, outdoor music experiences, opportunities are numerous. Goosetown restaurant on Linn Street offers outdoor live music from local talent, including Iowa City-based singer-songwriter Elizabeth Moen, in the warmer months of fall and spring. Just a short drive from campus, Wilson’s Apple Orchard often hosts live outdoor concerts on its grounds.

Another Iowa City staple is The Englert Theatre, best known for its Mission Creek and Witching Hour festivals. The Englert also hosts live musical and comedy performances, as well as filmed performances on occasion. The historic theater can be spotted by looking for its iconic marquee on Washington Street.

Opening in a new location in the Pedestrian Mall in the fall, Riverside Theatre is Iowa City’s professional theater. For those interested in community theater, Iowa City Community Theatre is a great way to be entertained by local talent.

Finally, the University of Iowa’s Theatre Building features over 20 student-produced performances each year in its three theaters, which are all open to the community and often free for UI students.

The Iowa City Council consists of seven elected officials who serve on the council outside of their own professions, looking to make informed decisions and better the city.

BRUCE TEAGUE • • • • • • MAZAHIR SALIH • • • • • • • • • • • • Mazahir Salih was elected to serve on city council in 2018, serving until 2022, and was elected by the council to serve at-large as Mayor Pro Tem from 2020 to 2022. Immigrating from Sudan, Salih is proclaimed to be the first Sudanese woman to hold public office in the U.S. Salih has earned degrees and graduated from the University of Sudan for Science and Technology, Kirkwood Community College, and Ashley University. Outside of her council responsibilities, Salih is the co-founder and executive director for the Center for Worker Justice, as well as an on-call EEG technician at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Salih announced in July she would not be seeking reelection to her seat, choosing to focus on her work at the Center for Worker Justice.

LAURA BERGUS • • • • Laura Bergus was elected to serve at-large, for a four-year term on the City Council, lasting from 2020 to 2024. Bergus has lived in Iowa City since 1981, attending the University of Iowa for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Bergus works as an attorney and mediator at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, LLP in Iowa City.

Bruce Teague was elected to serve on city council in 2018, serving until 2022. Teague was elected by the council to serve at-large as mayor, from 2020 until 2022. Residing in Iowa City since 1993, Teague has attended school in the area, graduating from both Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. Teague is the Owner and CEO of Caring Hand & More LLC (Home Health & Family Services) in addition to CHARM Homes (Property).

Susan Mims has served on city council for 11 years, currently finishing her third term. Mims serves District B, and was first elected in 2010. From 2012-2015, Mims was elected by the council to take on the role as Mayor Pro Tem and has since served as a councilor. Mims attended the University of Iowa and has lived in Iowa City since 1977. Mims will not seek reelection in the 2021 election.

John Thomas currently represents District C and has since being elected to city council in 2016. Thomas attended and earned degrees from both the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Michigan. Thomas served as a registered landscape architect while he lived in California. Thomas is now retired and has lived in Iowa City for the past eight years.

PAULINE TAYLOR • • • • Pauline Taylor is currently serving her second term on city council, representing District A. Taylor was first elected in 2016, and then was elected by the council to serve as Mayor Pro Tem from 2018-2020. Taylor earned her degree from the University of Iowa, and is a retired registered nurse, previously working at UIHC. Taylor has lived in Iowa City since 1977.

JANICE WEINER • • • • • • • • Janice Weiner was elected to serve at-large, for a four-year term on city council, lasting from 2020 to 2024. Weiner grew up in Iowa City, attending K-12 school here, then moved for her academic and professional school, as well as her career, but ended up back in Iowa City in 2015. Weiner attended Princeton University, then later graduated from Stanford Law School.

Weiner is a retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer, and spends her time outside of her council responsibilities working with other local services and organizations.

Hawkeyes embracing identities: multicultural and international student support at the UI The Office of Multicultural and Interational Student Support and Engagement strives to support University of Iowa students with underrepresented identities along with a variety of student organizations, events, and programming.

The five Office of Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement areas, diversity programming, and more than 100 different multicultural organizations help to make the University of Iowa campus as inclusive as possible.

Each branch of MISSE seeks to provide a “Home Away From Home” environment and help students succeed both academically and socially throughout their college experience. Cultural centers also offer a variety of intra-cultural and cross cultural educational and leadership opportunities.

Asian Pacific American Cultural Center: • • • • Known as the APACC, the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center serves to provide a space for

leadership of coordinator Prisma Ruacho.

Pride Alliance Center: • • • The Pride Alliance Center or ‘Pride House,’ creates a space on campus aimed at supporting student wellness and enabling a nurturing environment for LGBTQ students. After opening its doors in 2006, the Pride House has offered a place and programming for students to engage with the UI community and exist authentically.

During the 2020-21 school year, the center’s programming was entirely virtual and led by coordinator Emma Welch and a team of student leads. For more information on upcoming events, campaigns, and info sessions, students can check out @uiowapridehouse on Instagram.

International Student Support and Engagement: •

Dubbed with the nickname “the Afro House,” the Afro-American Cultural Center was founded in 1968 and is a space to recognize and empower Black students. Throughout the 2020-21 school year, the center operated entirely virtually under new coordinator Shalisa Gladney. The Afro-House has remained active on social media and posts information on programming to its Instagram regularly. Students can follow @uiowaafrohouse for more information on events and ways to get involved.

The International Student Support and Engagement, ISSE for short, is an initiative focused on supporting the international student experience. International student support and engagement became a part of MISSE in 2017, and has been expanding on campus ever since. Operating entirely virtually during the 2020-21 school year, ISSE is led by coordinator Shuhui Lin. ISSE regularly posts information about community events and other information on social media with an instagram handle of @uiowaisse.

Latino Native American Cultural Center: • • • • • Frequently referred to as the LNACC, the Latino Native American Cultural Center was formed in 1971 and just celebrated its 50th anniversary of being a safe space and haven for students on campus. The center aims to help students develop authentic relationships and foster a sense of belongingness and pride for their cultural heritage. The center currently operates under the leadership of recent UI and LNACC alumni, Isabela Flores, and had entirely virtual programming during the 2020-21 school year. Students looking to get involved with the center can find it on the MISSE website or get information on events, celebrations, and programming on the @uiowalnacc Instagram page.

: The University of Iowa’s largest student organization fundraises and dances for the kids in all formats University of Iowa Dance Marathon is a student organization providing year-round support for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families receiving treatment at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Since its founding 27 years ago, University of Iowa Dance Marathon has raised $30,388,382.85 for youth cancer patients and their families.

Dance Marathon is the university's largest student organization and the third largest Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon among 300 others in the nation.

UI Dance Marathon participants must reach a minimum fundraising goal to participate in The Big Event, a 24-hour event celebrating pediatric cancer survivors and remembering children who have lost their lives to the disease.

During the celebration, Dance Marathon fundraisers aim to stay on their feet for 24 hours without consuming caffeine.

The recently remodeled newsroom is an open concept that provides great collaborative opportunities.

DI & KRUI offer opportunities for student journalists The Daily Iowan and KRUI are both great ways for students interested in the field of journalism to get experience.

The Daily Iowan The Daily Iowan is the University of Iowa’s independent, student-run newspaper. The DI covers UI, Iowa City, and Johnson County news, as well as state and national politics through the Ethics and Politics Initiative.

The DI has won several awards for its reporting, including the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Newspaper of the Year award for 2020 and 2021 two years in a row!

Students can apply for paid positions at the DI, where they can practice their skills in several areas, such as broadcasting, photography, and reporting.

The paper focuses its reporting around the university and the Iowa City community.

There are several different sections that students can write at

the DI such as politics, sports, news, opinions, and arts.

People interested in photojournalism experience can photograph important people and events around Iowa City, as well as unrivaled access to photograph Iowa sporting events.

The DI’s broadcasting wing, DITV, conducts multiple live broadcasts a week, as well as a daily social video show called DITV Now. DITV won 13 awards in the 2021 Iowa Broadcast News Association contest, including first place in overall excellence among student broadcasts.

KRUI is the UI’s student-run radio station.

Students can apply for both paid and volunteer positions, where they can gain experience in radio broadcasting and audio production.

The main goals of KRUI are to serve as an educational laboratory for students seeking to learn about broadcasting FM and radio, as well as provide the Iowa City community with “a unique programming alternative in music, news, and sports.”

KRUI covers local news on both the radio station and its website, and it plays a wide selection of music, including alternative rock, jazz, hip hop, and more.

KRUI offers students the opportunity to learn more about radio and give prospective broadcasters on the job experience.

A variety of churches and religious-affiliated student organizations are easily accessible for students who live on and around campus and are looking to practice their faith.

University of Iowa students looking to get involved with a religious community on campus or in the Iowa City area have several options when it comes to choosing organizations and places of worship.

Coursework surrounding theology and religion are also offered through the UI Department of Religious Studies and Department of Philosophy.

Other faith based student orgs include Muslim Student Association, the Imam Mahdi Association, Campus Christian Fellowship, Agape Chinese Student Fellowship. Salt Company, a college ministry of Veritas Church, is another popular option.

Two student organizations on campus offer spaces for students looking to reduce their alcohol and drug use and focus on success.

The University of Iowa is dedicated to improving students’ interactions with alcohol by implementing procedures from a research-based Alcohol Harm Reduction Plan and providing access to confidential and group resources to discuss substance use and find safe spaces for alternate social activities.

Success, Not Excess Students considering making a change in their alcohol and drug consumption can find support at Success, Not Excess meetings.

Success, Not Excess is a group offering students a space to discuss alcohol and drug consumption concerns. The group focuses on goals relating to success in academics, mental and physical health, and relationships through alcohol and drug abstinence and reduction.

Success, Not Excess is not a treatment group, and there are no attendance requirements.

Students might benefit from attending the group if their alcohol and drug use: • Interferes with academic and work performance • Interferes with relationships • Increases due to boredom, stress, or to fit in with peers • Causes blacking out and memory loss • Leads to feelings of regret about actions while under the influence To ensure confidentiality, students are instructed to change their zoom name to show only their first name and pronouns. Group facilitators will ask each member to privately send them their first and last name, current address, and emergency contact's phone number.

During group meetings, students should expect to:

• Learn alternative paths to have fun, socialize, and cope with stress outside of substance use.

• Identify problems created by using and establish skills to avoid/prevent those problems.

Strength in Numbers is a UI organization offering alternative social activities for students who do not incorporate alcohol or drugs.

The organization does not look to discourage alcohol and drug use; its main focus is to provide fun social gatherings for students to connect.

Strength in Numbers is a safe and inclusive space for students who have been impacted by substance abuse or are in recovery. Events include socials and community service opportunities.

International students at the UI have a pool of resources available that make navigating the University of Iowa and Iowa City life manageable.

International students at the University of Iowa can access resources across the university to help them adjust and thrive to life at the UI and in Iowa City, and connect them with a network of support.

In the fall 2020 semester, The University of Iowa hosted 2,072 international students from dozens of countries across the world.

International students can find support from International Student and Scholar Services, a department within the UI’s International Programs. The service provides immigration assistance, intercultural training, and support with transitioning to living in Iowa City.

International Programs also offers Life in Iowa, an extended orientation program that aims to help international students adjust to life and academics at the University of Iowa. In spring 2021, the program held sessions including internship and job search help, discussion about shock, cookie decorating, and more.

Students can find support through Friends Without Borders, the Organization for the Active Support of International Students, and Global Buddies, all programs of the International Programs aimed to help international students build a social and s u p p o r t network at the UI. University of Iowa offers military opportunities through ROTC Hawkeyes interested in a military future can explore the options offered by the UI’s ROTC programs.

For University of Iowa students who are looking to get involved on campus and become active within the military, the UI offers two branches of ROTC programs, giving students the opportunity to train for either the Army or the Air Force branches.

UI’s Air Force ROTC Branch Joining Air Force ROTC at the University of Iowa allows students to partake in an enjoyable, typical college life while also offering the opportunity to be part of a supportive community full of fellow Hawkeyes looking to get the most out of their college experience.

To be eligible to participate in the universi-

ty’s Air Force ROTC branch, students must maintain at least a 2.50 GPA in addition to maintaining adequate health and fitness that will allow them to efficiently pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.

Another requirement students have to complete to be involved with this branch is to take aerospace studies courses, which will allow them to meet their respective graduation requirements.

Upon graduating, Air Force ROTC students are commissioned as second lieutenants and advance into a field with more than 140 prospective options.

UI’s Army ROTC Branch By being involved in

Army ROTC, UI students are able to learn leadership and management skills needed to become a future U.S. Army Officer or to learn valuable skills for other career paths they may choose.

Enrolling in ROTC does not automatically sign students up to join the Army or put this obligation on them. Rather, students will take an ROTC class that is considered a college elective for which they receive credit for.

Requirements to join the university’s Army ROTC program include being enrolled as a full time UI student, being a U.S. citizen, and maintaining at least a 2.50 GPA. Army ROTC graduates are commissioned as U.S. Army Second Lieutenants, then receive specialized training in one of the 17 different Army branches. These graduates will have various opportunities for advanced leadership positions and post-graduate education.

Getting involved with Greek Life at the UI There are dozens of options for getting involved in fraternities and sororities on campus, and more than 3,600 students are currently members of a fraternity or sorority.

Greek life has been a part of the University of Iowa and the Iowa City community since 1866. All of the fraternities and sororities on campus operate under the same principles, which are to give students the opportunity to belong, serve, lead, thrive, and succeed.

There are 45 chapters on campus, all governed by one of four councils: the Interfraternity Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or Panhellenic Council.

On campus currently, there are 17 organizations part of the Interfraternity Council, five organizations part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, nine organizations part of the Multicultural Greek Council, and 14 part of the Pan-Hellenic Council.

There are more than 3,600 students who are currently members of fraternities and sororities, around 15 percent of the student body.

Each chapter has its own unique recruitment and membership process.

In order to begin the process of joining Greek life, students first have to complete the pre-joining education course, as well as an online module that focuses on general fraternity and sorority life.

All organizations within each of the four councils have their own unique financial responsibilities, which can be found on the Fraternity and Sorority Life website.

Report cards on all of the Greek organizations on campus can also be found on the Fraternity and Sorority Life website. These report cards show the GPAs of the organizations, as well as awards won by the organizations, and monthly education that is required to be a member of that organization.

Student government advocates for undergrad and grad interests Split between undergraduate and graduate bodies, the University of Iowa’s student governments represent and advocate for students.

Undergraduate Student Government represents more than 20,000 undergraduate students at the University of Iowa. The governing body allocates funds to the student organizations at the university and votes on issues that impact the undergraduate student body.

New senators and executives are elected to USG each spring. Regan Smock and José Muñiz Jr. were elected to serve as president and vice president for the 2021-22 school year.

Smock and Murñiz Jr. ran on a platform of transparency, accountability, collaboration, community and compassion, and previously told the DI they are committed to making a college education more accessible, more inclusive, and more uplifting at the university.

Incoming freshmen can apply to be a first-year senator in the fall.

Graduate and Professional Student Government represents over 10,000 graduate and professional students.

The main goal of GPSG is to improve the experience for graduate and professional students at the University of Iowa.

GPSG advocates on behalf of all graduate and professional students to other governing bodies, such as the state Board of Regents, administrators at the UI, and local and state legislators.

The current president of the legislative body is Mackensie Graham.

GETTING POLITICAL ON CAMPUS Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus status offers students an opportunity to get up-close and personal with the political world.

Iowa is home to the first caucuses in the presidential-election season, and that means presidential candidates and potential candidates flood the state in hopes of getting to know Iowans. University of Iowa students essentially pave the way for these candidates and their futures once they reach Iowa City. Whatever way you choose to make your voice heard, the UI has a number of outlets and student organizations to help you do so.

COLLEGE REPUBLICANS UNIVERSITY DEMOCRATS Students interested in electing and showing support for Democratic candidates can find each other within the University Democrats.

While extremely active during caucuses and election season, this partisan group on campus works year-round to shape the Democratic party.

Any and all UI Republicans can find a home with the College Republican student organization where student Republicans and conservatives can rally candidates and each other as well as meet like-minded individuals.

HAWK THE VOTE

Members of the UI community who are interested in racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice in Iowa meet through the Young Democratic Socialists at Iowa. The group centers itself around education and activism.

Live on campus in a UI residence hall

The UI has nine residence halls on two sides of campus for new students to choose from. Residence Halls offer Living Learning Communities where students can live with others with similar interests.

With ten different residence halls offered on campus, first-year students and those returning after their freshman year can choose to live on campus in the following dorms the University of Iowa has to offer.

EAST-SIDE RESIDENCE HALLS: Burge Catlett Daum (Honors dorm) Currier Stanley Mayflower WEST-SIDE RESIDENCE HALLS: Hillcrest Peterson Slater Rienow While certain residence halls offered on campus stand out with their own special perks, you will find a great home choosing from any of the nine dorms offered. Catlett, Burge, and Hillcrest are the three residence halls with marketplaces for students to dine

and use their meal plans.

Hillcrest, Mayflower, and Burge all have C-stores where students are allowed to use their Hawk dollars and flex meals to purchase food and snacks.

Cattlet, Currier, Mayflower, and Hillcrest all have fitness centers for students. However, these were closed during the 2020-21 school year due to the pandemic. Students must use their Hawk dollars to utilize the laundry services every residence hall also houses in at least one designated area.

Living Learning Communities Students may also choose to live in Living Learning Communities in the residence halls. LLC’s are separate floors designated to students with similar identities or learning interests. The UI offers 16 different LLC’s, including “Young Gifted and Black” for students who are Black, “Unidos” for those identifying as Latinx, and “All In” for those a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

There are also LLC’s for first-generation students and returning students. Others are based on majors and interests, such as Arts, BizHawk, Iowa Writers, People in Engineering, Political Matters, Public Health, Honors, and Sports and Recreation Management.

Do most students live in apartments during their first year at Iowa?

The University of Iowa does not require students to live in the residence halls during their first year. That being said, over 90 percent of first-year students choose to live in the residence halls. It is much more common for students to move into apartments during their second, third, or fourth year at Iowa.

How do I find an apartment?

There are many services available to help you find an apartment in Iowa City. If you’re looking for a place to start looking, the University has an “off-campus living” page on their website where you can find available rentals near campus. Talking to upperclassmen who have lived in apartments is a great way to get recommendations for the best spots on campus.

How do I set up an apartment tour?

Most rentals should have a contact email or phone number that you can reach out to. It’s a good idea to tour apartments before you sign the lease! Many students sign leases in the fall or early winter, so make sure to start looking early!

New eras begin for Hawkeye hoops Coach Fran McCaffery’s starting lineup will look a lot different in 2021-22 as many of the centerpieces of his 2020-21 squad departed during the offseason.

After a breakout 2020-21 season, now-sophomore Caitlin Clark and the Iowa women’s basketball team aim to carry last year’s momentum in 2021-22.

One of the best seasons in the history of the Iowa men’s basketball program came to an abrupt end in 2021.

After staying in the Associated Press top 10 for nearly the entire season, finishing third in a competitive Big Ten Conference, and earning a two-seed in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Hawkeyes were upset in the Round of 32 by the Oregon Ducks.

Iowa entered the 2020-21 season with as much hype around it as the program had seen in decades, which was made clear by the team’s No. 5 preseason ranking. Heading into the 2021-22 season, expectations will be very different.

Coach Fran McCaffery’s squad lost several key contributors from last season. Luka Garza, the consensus national player of the year and the Iowa men’s basketball program’s all-time

leading scorer, is on to a professional career.

Second-team All-Big Ten player Joe Wieskamp declared for the NBA Draft. Reserve forward Jack Nunge and starting guard CJ Fredrick both entered the transfer portal in the offseason.

So, next season’s Iowa team will look very different.

Joe Toussaint, Ahron Ulis, Tony Perkins, and sixth-year senior Jordan Bohannon will likely see the majority of the minutes in Iowa’s backcourt next season. In the frontcourt, Keegan Murray will lead the Hawkeyes after a breakout freshman season. He will be joined by Patrick and Connor McCaffery, Kris Murray, and Josh Ogundele.

Fran McCaffery signed a four-year contract extension in March to remain with the Hawkeyes through the 2027-28 season.

Iowa women’s basketball defied the odds in 2020-21, playing its way from preseason unraked to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.

In 2021-22, forward McKenna Warnock, center Monika Czinano, and guards Caitlin Clark, Gabbie Marshall, and Kate Martin are all expected to reprise their starting roles in Hawkeye head coach Lisa Bluder’s lineup.

Czinano is the only senior in Iowa’s starting lineup.

Sophomore Caitlin Clark will return to the hardwood in 2021-22 as the reigning Big Ten Freshman of Year and Dawn Staley Award-winner.

Last season, Clark led the nation in scoring — dropping more than 26 points per game.

Clark’s performance in 2020-21 helped her become the first freshman in Iowa women’s basketball history to earn All-America honors.

Czinano also made her presence felt nationally, as she led the country in field goal percentage — making 66.8 percent of her attempts from the floor in 2020-21.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2021 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament in runner-up fashion, falling to Maryland in the conference title game, 104-84.

Iowa entered the league tournament as the No. 6 overall seed.

The Hawkeyes’ performance in the conference tournament earned them a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

UConn dealt Iowa a season-ending loss, 92-72, in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.

Only three players on Iowa’s 2020-21 roster won’t be returning in 2021-22: Zion Sanders, Alexis Sevillian and Megan Meyer.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena The 2020-21 athletic season was a good one for teams that competed inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The top-ranked Hawkeye wrestling team won both of its home duals in 2021 on its way to winning its first national championship since 2010. The Iowa men’s basketball team went 13-2 on its home floor, while the women’s basketball team went 10-3. And the Iowa

women’s gymnastics team went 4-0 at home last season, eventually clinching the Big Ten regular season title.

Just like at Kinnick Stadium, fans were not permitted to attend events at Carver-Hawkeye Arena during the 2020-21 season because of precautions taken amid the pandemic. The plan for 2021-22 is to allow fans back into the arena.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena is named after Roy Carver, a longtime supporter of the University of Iowa. The arena is one of the 25 largest university-owned facilities in the nation and opened in January of 1983. The arena seats 15,500 fans.

Also typically the site for UI graduation ceremonies, Carver-Hawkeye Arena is an integral part of life on campus.

Football looks to continue where it left off The Iowa football team finished the 2020 season on a six-game winning streak and will look to replicate that success in 2021.

The 2020 Iowa football season was one unlike any other.

At first, a fall season appeared unlikely to happen.

The Big Ten postponed all fall sports, including football, to the spring in August of 2020. But a month later, the conference reversed its decision and scheduled an eight-game, conference-only regular season that went into December.

The Hawkeyes opened the 2020 season 0-2 and the long wait to see the team on the field seemed like it wasn’t going to be worth it. At least initially. Iowa responded by closing the season on a six-game winning streak to finish the year 6-2. That stretch included trophy game victories over rivals Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.

Iowa’s final two games of the season were called off because of positive COVID-19 cases within its opponents’ programs. Iowa was supposed to play Michigan in the Big Ten’s “Champions Week” the same week as the conference championship game, but the game was canceled five days before it was scheduled to be played.

The team’s Music City Bowl matchup with Missouri was also canceled after the Tigers could not compete because of positive COVID-19 tests.

Iowa will be led in 2021 once again by head coach Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz just completed his 22nd year as

Iowa’s coach. He is the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories (168).

Last season was the eighth in a row in which the Hawkeyes qualified for a bowl game. To make a ninth-straight trip to bowl season, Iowa will have to overcome the losses of several key contributors from last season’s team.

Iowa lost 10 starters from its 2020 team, including consensus All-American defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon, first-team All-Big Ten offensive tackle Alaric Jackson, and explosive wide receiver/kickoff returner Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

But the Hawkeyes are returning 16 starters. That includes quarterback Spencer Petras, who started all eight games for Iowa last year in his first season in command of the team’s offense. Iowa held a quarterback competition in the offseason, but Petras is the favorite to start once again for Iowa.

Around Petras on offense will be first-team All-Big Ten running back Tyler Goodson, Rimington Trophy finalist Tyler Linderbaum, and tight end Sam LaPorta, who led the team in receptions last year as a sophomore.

In 2020-21, Hawkeye defensive coordinator Phil Parker’s unit was one of the best in the country, allowing just 16 points per game. This season, Iowa returns all five of its starters in the secondary and has

experience at the middle and weak-side linebacker positions with Seth Benson and Jack Campbell. The defensive line will be the position group to watch.

Second-team All-Big Ten defensive end Zach VanValkenburg is the team’s only returning starter up front for the Hawkeye defense.

On special teams, kicker Caleb Shudak replaces All-American Keith Ducan, while All-Big Ten performer Tory Taylor retains his spot at punter.

The Hawkeyes are scheduled to play 12 games over the course of the 2021 regular season. Iowa will host the following teams at Kinnick Stadium: Indiana, Kent State, Colorado State, Penn State (ANF Black and Gold Spirit Game), Purdue (Homecoming), Minnesota, and Illinois (Senior Day). Iowa will also play the following teams on the road: Iowa State, Maryland, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Nebraska.

Kinnick Stadium The Iowa football team hosted four games inside Kinnick Stadium in 2020. But other than a handful of family members of players on the team, the 69,250-seat stadium sat empty on game days to comply with capacity restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, however, fans will be back in the stands on Saturdays to cheer for the Hawkeyes, replacing the cardboard cutouts that filled seats in their absence.

As fans return, they will experience some of the traditions that make up a college football-filled afternoon in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes will swarm onto the field with AC/DC’s “Back and Black” and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” roaring over the speakers. A

portion of Nile Kinnick’s Heisman Trophy acceptance speech will play on the video boards right before kickoff. And at the end of the first quarter, everyone in the stadium will wave at the onlooking children’s hospital.

Iowa is 298-188-15 (.610) all time at Kinnick Stadium. Last season, the Hawkeyes went 3-1 in their home stadium last season, winning games against Michigan State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, while dropping a contest against Northwestern.

Kinnick Stadium is located at the intersection of Hawkins Dr. and Melrose Ave. in Iowa City, near Duane Banks Field and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

After a strong 2019-20 campaign, Iowa field hockey found success again in 2020-21.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2020-21 regular season 10-4 and qualified for the NCAA Division I Women’s Field Hockey Championships.

The 2020-21 NCAA tournament field featured just 12 teams compared to its usual 16 because of COVID-19. Nine of the 12 available spots were filled by conference champions.

Before the regular season concluded, Hawkeye junior Anthe Nijziel won both the Big Ten Player and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Nijziel is the first Hawkeye to be named Big Ten Player of the Year since Kristy Gleason did so almost 20 years ago.

Hawkeye head coach Lisa Cellucci shared the 2020-21 Big Ten Coach of the Year award with Rutgers’ Meredith Civico. Cellucci has now won back-to-back Big Ten Coach of the Year awards.

While both Nijziel and Cellucci will be back in 2021-22,

forward Maddy Murphy, midfielders Ellie Holley and Nikki Freeman, and goalkeeper Grace McGuire likely will not be.

Murphy, Holley, Freeman, and McGuire are eligible to return in 2021-22 because the NCAA granted all its athletes an additional year of eligibility during the 2020 season. Murphy, Holley, Freeman, and McGuire were, however, all seniors last year.

Among Iowa’s key returning athletes are junior midfielder Esme Gibson, sophomores Alex Wesneski and Harper Dunne, and the Stribos sisters — Lokke and Sofie.

Hawkeyes make history Last season, Iowa soccer won its first-ever Big Ten title. The Hawkeyes also picked up their first-ever NCAA tournament win.

The Hawkeyes won the 2021 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Championships without much veteran leadership on their roster.

Of the 28 players on head coach Dave DiIanni’s team, 18 were underclassmen in 2020-21.

Iowa finished the regular season 2-8-1. The Hawkeyes didn’t score a single goal in their first six games.

In nine regular season games, Iowa scored three goals. The Hawkeyes put the ball in the back of the net six times in just four Big Ten tournament games.

Iowa defeated Minnesota, Penn State, Illinois, and Wisconsin on its way to a Big Ten title. During the regular season, the Hawkeyes were defeated

by all four of the opponents they beat in the Big Ten tournament.

Iowa also qualified for NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships via its Big Ten title.

The Hawkeyes faced Campbell in their first NCAA tournament match of 2020-21. Iowa downed Campbell, 1-0.

Prior to their win over the Camels, the Hawkeyes had never won an NCAA tournament game.

Twenty-seven of the 28 Hawkeyes on DiIanni’s 2020-21 roster are returning for the 2021-22 season.

Among those coming back in 2021-22 is sophomore goalkeeper Macy Enneking. The

Hawkeye runners race toward normalcy Cross Country

After an unusual 2020-21 season, Iowa cross country will run a more traditional schedule in 2021-22.

Track

The Hawkeyes burst out of the gate in 2021 after the 2020 outdoor season was canceled because of COVID-19.

After the 2020 NCAA outdoor track and field season was postponed because of COVID-19, Iowa track and field came charging out of the gate in 2021.

In February, Iowa men’s track field claimed its first outright Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championship since 1929. The Hawkeyes scored a UI record 119 points on their way to the title.

The Hawkeyes’ conference championship helped Director of Iowa Track and Field Joey Woody claim the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s Midwest Region Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year award last season.

During the outdoor season, two Iowa hurdlers competed at the 2021 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Junior Jamal Britt and senior Jaylan McConico both received invitations to the event from USA Track and Field. Britt and McConico competed in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing third and fifth, respectively.

The 2020-21 cross country season at the University of Iowa was short-lived because of COVID-19.

On Aug. 11, 2020, the Big Ten Conference announced that all its fall sports would be postponed to the spring — including cross country.

As a result, both Iowa men’s and women’s cross country did not compete until Jan. 30, 2021.

The Jan. 30 meet the Hawkeyes participated in was both their first and last competition of the year.

Held Shelbyville, Indiana, the 2020-21 Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships saw Hawkeye senior Gabby Skopec produce a top-50 finish in the women’s 6,000-meter and Iowa freshman Aidan King post a top-44 finish in the men’s 8,00-meter.

In 2021, NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country meets across the nation will return to their traditional fall dates.

Wrestling ready to repeat This season, Iowa wrestling will be competing for its second-straight national championship.

Last season, Iowa wrestling brought a national title back to Iowa City for the first time since 2010.

The Hawkeyes won the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in blowout fashion — finishing the event 15.5 points clear of all challengers.

Senior 125-pounder Spencer Lee was Iowa’s only individual NCAA champion last season. The Murrysville, Pennsylvania, native outscored his NCAA tournament opponents, 59-8.

Lee wrestled the entire NCAA tournament on a torn ACL in one of his knees.

Senior 174-pounder Michael Kemerer

and 141-pound Jaydin Eierman both produced runner-up finishes at the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.

In total, seven Hawkeyes earned All-America honors last season: Lee, senior Austin DeSanto, Eierman, senior Kaleb Young, Kemerer, senior Jacob Warner, and junior Tony Cassioppi.

Iowa also won its second-straight Big Ten title in 2021, crowning four individual conference champions in the process.

Last season, Lee won both the Dan Hodge Trophy and the Big Ten Wrestler of the Year award for the second-straight

time.

Hawkeye head coach Tom Brands was also dubbed coach of the year by Intermat, the NWCA, and the Big Ten. Iowa wrestling now has 37 Big Ten titles and 24 national championships to its name.

All 10 wrestlers that cracked Brands’ starting lineup in 2020-21 are returning for the 2021-22 season.

This season, seniors like Lee, DeSanto, Eierman, Young, Alex Marinelli, and Kemerer will all be utilizing the free year of eligibility the NCAA gave its winter sports athletes because of COVID-19.

Swimming and diving’s tumultuous year After a tumultuous 2020-21 season, the Hawkeyes will return to the pool in 2021-22 under the direction of a new head coach.

For the first time since 1916, the University of Iowa does not have a men’s swimming and diving team.

The UI made the decision to cut men’s swimming and diving, along with men’s tennis and men’s gymnastics on Aug. 21, 2020, because of the financial deficit Iowa Athletics is facing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 1934, former Iowa swim and dive coach David Armbuster and Hawkeye swimmer Jack Sieg invented and perfected the butterfly stroke in UI’s Field House pool.

Like Iowa men’s swim and dive, Hawkeye women’s swim and dive was also slated for discontinuation at the end of the 2020-21 academic year.

Kaufman, and Kelsey Drake — filed a Title IX complaint against the UI, alleging that its decision to cut its women’s swim and dive program made it non-compliant with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

After a months-long legal battle, UI Athletics elected to reinstate its NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving program in perpetuity.

The Hawkeye women will compete under new leadership in 2021-22. Marc Long, formerly the head coach of both Iowa men’s and women’s swim and dive, declined to return to coach the Iowa women in 2021-22.

Iowa women’s swim and dive will have to rebuild its roster in 2021-22.

The program housed 34 athletes in 2019-20. In 2020-21, only 24 women’s swimmers competed in Iowa’s Black and Gold.

Iowa tennis undergoes major changes At the end of the 2020-21 academic year, the Iowa men’s tennis program was discontinued. Iowa women’s tennis will, however, continue to compete in 2021-22.

In 2021-22, the Iowa women’s tennis team will be the only NCAA Division I program to call the HTRC home.

At the end of the 2020-21 academic year, the University of Iowa discontinued its men’s tennis program to combat financial struggles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last season, the Hawkeye men won just five of their 15 regular season matches, finishing eighth in the Big Ten Conference.

Despite their poor record, the Iowa men still made history. Senior Kareem Allaf became Iowa’s all-time leader in combined singles and doubles wins April 4.

Junior Will Davies and sophomore Oliver Okonkwo teamed up in doubles, eventually becoming the

country’s second-ranked doubles pair. Their No. 2 national ranking is good for a UI record.

Conversely, the Hawkeye women found a great deal of success as a team in 2020-21, finishing the regular season with a 12-6 overall record.

Sophomore Alex Noel tied the Iowa women’s tennis record for most Big Ten weekly honors in a single season with four. She also climbed to a program-best No. 13 national ranking via her 22-0 regular season record in singles.

Last season, the Hawkeye women earned a No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

Most of Iowa’s lineup will be returning in 2021-22, with the exception of Elise van Heuevelen Treadwell — the Iowa women’s tennis program’s third-all-time winningest player in doubles and singles combined.

Iowa gymnastics undergoes offseason changes

With Iowa men’s gymnastics now cut, Iowa women’s gymnastics will serve as the UI’s only NCAA Division I gymnastics program.

This season, Iowa gymnastics meets at Carver-Hawkeye Arena are going to look a lot different. For the first time since 1922, the University of Iowa will not field a men’s gymnastics team.

To combat ongoing financial struggles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, UI President Bruce Harreld and Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta announced in August 2020 that four Hawkeye sports would be discontinued at the end of the 2020-21 academic year — among the sports cut was men’s gymnastics.

Iowa men’s gymnastics finished the 2020-21 season 4-2. The Hawkeyes placed third at the 2021 Big Ten Championships, and fifth in the NCAA Championship qualifier.

Seniors Evan Davis and Bennett Huang were both named NCAA All-Americans at the end of the 2020-21 season.

With Iowa men’s gymnastics now cut, Iowa women’s gymnastics will serve as the UI’s only NCAA Division I gymnastics program.

Last season, the Hawkeye women won their first-ever Big Ten regular season title.

Volleyball plays Xtream season Last year, the Hawkeyes played their first full season at the newly-constructed Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Iowa went 4-16 in 2020-21. Two of the Hawkeyes’ four wins came at Xtream Arena. Iowa defeated Michigan State, Indiana, Northwestern, and Rutgers once each in 2020-21.

Last season also marked the first time the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball season has ever been played in the spring.

Because of COVID-19, the Big Ten Conference and NCAA postponed their fall sports seasons — with the exception of football — to the spring.

So, Iowa played in a series of weekend-only, in-conference doubleheaders from January to April.

outside hitter Courtney Buzzerio became the first Hawkeye to earn All-Big Ten recognition under head coach Vicki Brown.

Buzzerio is the first Hawkeye to garner first-team All-Big Ten honors since 2001. Buzzerio was the only Big Ten player to register a triple-double in 2020-21, and she led the Hawkeyes in kills and service aces.

Seniors Brie Orr, Griere Hughes, and Halle Johnston all opted out of the 2020-21 season because of COVID-19. The senior trio will, however, rejoin Buzzerio and company for their 2021-22 campaign.

Counting Orr, Hughes, and Johnston, Iowa will return the entirety of its 2020-21 roster in 2021-22.

This season will be Brown’s third as Iowa volleyball’s head coach.
