A complete list will appear for students’ enrolled courses. The UI Hawk Shop also has UI apparel for Hawkeye fans to buy.

Iowa Book, located on 8 S. Clinton St. in Iowa City’s Downtown District, is another resource where some students can buy or rent their course materials.

Like the Hawk Shop, students can enter UI course numbers to find the correct textbook for a class.

Barnes and Noble College entered a new partnership with Iowa Book on Aug. 9, 2021. Students can also sell back textbooks at the end of a semester and get 50% cashback, according to Iowa Book’s website.

Prairie Lights, located on 15 S. Dubuque Street in downtown Iowa City, was opened in 1978 and provides some select textbooks for students. Some professors prefer supporting locally-owned businesses and list their course materials at Prairie Lights. The store offers new and used textbooks and provides delivery or in-store pick-up.

The UI Office of the Registrar also has a page of resources where students can buy textbooks and course materials on campus. UI instructors also list their course materials on a course syllabus or ICON portal site. On your ICON account, access courses by clicking “Courses” on the left side of the screen. The course materials list is commonly listed in the “Modules” or “Files” section of the site. If course materials are not in a class, the course ICON site should list “No Textbook Required,” according to the Registrar’s website.

Ordering course materials is one of the main tasks for all students to complete before the first day of classes at the University of Iowa in August.

While all textbooks are ordered to buy or rent through the Iowa Hawkshop and University Bookstore, students have several Iowa City retailers to choose from. It is recommended that students have materials before the official first day of the fall semester. UI students have access to multiple locations to buy textbooks for classes.

The Iowa Hawk Shop, located on the ground floor of the Iowa Memorial Union on campus, is the university’s official place to buy textbooks. The Hawk Shop was recently privatized after a vote by the state Board of Regents on March 12, 2021. The Follet Higher Education Group operates the store, and UI student employees work to help run the store. Students can order their textbooks and pick them up at the IMU before classes begin. To get a list of what textbooks you need, students can enter their Student ID number through a search on the

Looking back on the

2021-22

school year University of Iowa students protested and experienced a new president in the 2021-22 school year.

A NEW PRESIDENT

New UI president Barbara Wilson began her tenure in July 2021. As president, she oversees more than 30,000 students and 25,000 employees of the university. In her first year, she focused on building relationships across campus, as well as prioritizing increasing mental health resources for students.

Going forward, Wilson said she wants to continue to further free speech on campus. She has also worked on the next strategic plan based on the five core values of the university: community, creativity, excellence, inclusion, and integrity. The plan will set the vision for the university over the next five years.

.FANS BACK IN THE STANDS After playing the 2020 season in front of cardboard cutouts, fans returned to Kinnick Stadium to watch Hawkeye football. Fans also packed the stands at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for men’s and women’s basketball.

Iowa football vaulted to a number two ranking in the AP poll following an epic showdown with Penn State ended with many of the 70,000 Hawkeye faithful on the field at Kinnick. The Iowa women’s basketball team sold out Carver-Hawkeye for their regular-season finale, as well as their first and second round March Madness games. The Iowa men’s team also sold out a few of its final home games.

A RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING

Across the UI campus, events and classes returned to a heavily in-person format without any COVID-19 restrictions. The UI was the lone Big Ten school to open the fall semester without a mask mandate. Students were free to choose whether they would wear masks both semesters.

After two years, Hancher Auditorium returned to a consistent schedule hosting in-person events, overcoming budget cuts and a shutdown. The auditorium hosted events including dance exhibitions, lectures from TV personality Bill Nye and others, musicals, plays, and concerts.

CALLS FOR JUSTICE ON CAMPUS

Members of the Iowa City community rallied around one another throughout the academic year, beginning with protests over an alleged sexual assault at the Phi Gamma Delta house. Over three nights of protests, hundreds of community members marched through Iowa City and protested in front of the fraternity house in search of justice.

Resources for UI stays alert to COVID-19, publishes positive tests first-generation Hawkeyes The University of Iowa will continue to monitor the virus throughout the 2022-2023 school year and provide mitigation resources.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March of 2020, the University of Iowa has taken precautions to protect students, faculty, and staff from contracting the virus. While the university stopped requiring masks and social distancing practices in the fall of 2021, masks are still required to be worn in UI Hospitals and Clinics.

When Iowa’s Public Health Disaster Emergency Proclamation ended on Feb. 15, the state stopped monitoring negative COVID-19 test results. The UI still monitors and publishes positive tests self-reported by students, faculty, and staff, and stats are published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Free COVID-19 test kits can be found at Student Health, the Iowa Memorial Union, and the residence hall front desks.

The university also recommends that its population get vaccinated, subsequently boosted in consultation with their healthcare provider, and wear a KN95 or Level-1 medical-grade mask, available at more than 200 health stations across campus.

In addition, each classroom is provided with clear protective screens for instructors. Students needing to be isolated or quarantined are provided with their own separate residence hall rooms, and the HVAC ventilation and filtration of each building are adjusted to mitigate the spread. Mental health and childcare resources are available to students, faculty, and staff to assist them

through the pandemic.

The university will continue to keep track of local and national COVID-19 developments, while also relying on guidance from the state Board of Regents, the Iowa and Johnson County departments of public health, the Big Ten Conference, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are a plethora of resources available to the 20 percent of undergraduate students navigating college as the first in their family at the University of Iowa.

The 1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network provides a space for first-gen students to ask questions and make connections with faculty, staff, and student leaders. Faculty and staff volunteer to be part of the network and first-gen students who want to connect with someone in a specific department can find their information on the first-gen website.

University Housing offers a first-generation Living Learning Community for students who don’t have parents or guardians who completed a four-year degree. The LLC puts students on a residence floor with other first-generation students. This community can be a great way for students to make connections with peers, faculty, and staff.

The 1stGen@Iowa Iowa Student Advisory Board provides student input to the UI First-Generation Task Force, and works to inform and educate the campus community by developing strategies to better support first-generation students at the University of Iowa. Applications for the 2023-2024 school year will be accepted in March 2023.

The First Gen Hawks program is designed to equip first-gen students with the tools, resources, and support that will help students reach their goals at the UI and beyond. The program provides 200 new students the opportunity to make connections with faculty and staff, meet new people, and find a community on campus. Students participate in one of three learning track areas: on-campus employment, undergraduate research, or leadership & engagement. Each area has a seminar class in the fall and spring semesters that explores tracks and tips for success.

TRIO Student Support Services helps students at the UI who are first-generation, low-income, or have a disability. This is a federally funded program that can help navigate important college-related tasks including filing for FAFSA, applying to postgraduate and professional programs, and finding additional sources for financial aid and scholarships.

The Undergraduate Student Government has an elected First-Generation Constituency Senator who serves in the student senate. First-gen students can reach out to this student representative with questions or to voice concerns that the student government can address.

Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The University of Iowa’s Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion brings central leadership and resources on campus to provide an environment for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The division consists of the Center for Diversity and Enrichment, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and Diversity Resources. Every year, the division provides services from student programs to scholarship opportunities.

The division recently welcomed Liz Tovar, who was appointed from an interim role to the executive officer for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

UI Diversity Councils are part of the representation of communities that the division serves across campus. Seven councils are open to students and faculty who identify as a member of each specific group. The diversity councils include the African American Council, the Council on Disability Awareness, the Council of the Status of Women, the LGBTQ+ Council, the Native American Council, the Pan Asian Council, and the Latinx Council.

The Upward Bound Project, which is also federally funded, guides first-generation and low-income high school students from schools around the UI in their preparation for postsecondary education opportunities.

According to the UI, the Upward Bound Project began in 1964, and has been present at the university since 1966. Like TRIO, the Upward Bound Project provides opportunities for future Hawkeyes. Some free of cost benefits of the program are individual and small-group tutoring, academic counseling, two ACT exam fee waivers and four SAT test fee waivers, FAFSA assistance, and summer enrichment opportunities.

Iowa Edge

Also housed in the division is Iowa Edge, a week-long introductory program leading up to the first day of UI classes. The selected group of incoming students will meet supporting campus leaders and work to develop leadership skills to utilize in and outside of the UI. Iowa Edge allows participants to build a community with a group of before the semester begins. LGBTQ+ Resources

The UI offers resources for LGBTQ+ students to feel at home at Iowa.

Students can find a map of all single-user and gender-inclusive restrooms on the university’s website. University Housing and Dining also offers gender-inclusive on-campus living options for students.

In MyUI, students can change their preferred names, pronouns, sex, and gender.

To make the modification, select the “Student Information” tab on MyUI and click on the “Name/Pronouns” square.

The Pride Alliance Center has said their spot on campus is a “home away from home” for students. The Pride House, located on Grand Avenue Court, is a place for students to gather and share in community events.

Student Disability Services provide students with many campus resources, including advocacy and awareness, academics and tutoring, accessibility tools and resources, community and care, etc.

SDS’ mission is to welcome, encourage, and empower students and serve the UI’s community for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Their vision includes welcoming students as valuable contributors to the diversity of the UI community.

There are also student organizations to foster a community for students with disabilities and their allies.

UI Students for Advocacy and Awareness is an organization for students with a disability and allies.

The organization provides opportunities to gather knowledge about disabilities and develop leadership and advocacy skills.

Opportunities are available all while the organizations create tangible changes surrounding disability-related issues.

The organization aims to provide a community for students with all kinds of health conditions: chronic illnesses, mental health disorders, neuropsychiatric conditions such as autism, conditions such as blindness/deafness, or anything else.

Best Buddies is also a student organization supporting students with disabilities.

UI’s chapter of Best Buddies works to eliminate discrimination toward people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities by connecting them with UI students to create friendships.

Events are scheduled regularly throughout the year and provide the opportunity to meet and spend time with buddies regularly.

UI’s commitment to DEI provides many organizations and resources to students with disabilities and their peers for a welcoming and inclusive environment and community.

Keeping Hawkeyes University Counseling Services: addressing Healthy Student Health and University Counseling Services give students access to physical and mental health services.

ON CAMPUS HEALTH SERVICES The University of Iowa offers students physical and mental health services. Students are able to make an appointment with Student Health, which is on the west side of campus, if they want to see a licensed doctor or nurse.

If students need assistance with their mental health the UI has an on campus mental health counseling service.

Student Health and University Counseling Services are covered by tuition, so there are no additional costs for making an appointment.

Counselors are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students can call the office to schedule an initial consultation. After the consultation appointment, students can make a plan with a UCS counselor on which of the university’s mental health services is right for them.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics: UIHC is seperate from Student Health, so visits are not covered by tuition. UIHC clinics associated with the UI provide excellent educational resources, and students work or volunteer at the hospital during their college career.

University Counseling Services offers many services for students currently enrolled at the University of Iowa. Services include group counseling, individual therapy, relationship counseling, and more. UCS also offers consultation appointments to discuss your concerns and the best course of action. Most services that UCS provides are free for students.

Call UCS to check availability for a 30-minute same-day appointment. These are scheduled on a first-call, first-served basis on weekdays at 8 a.m. Quick Access Appointments can also be used to get support from a counselor about an immediate crisis and create a plan to help manage it.

woman to serve as the UI’s president

Elected to serve a

Barbara Wilson, the 22nd president of the University of Iowa, will begin her second year of presidency in the summer of 2022.

University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson started her second year as the head Hawkeye this past summer after being appointed by the state Board of Regents in 2021.

Wilson is the third woman to serve as the UI’s president. According to the UI Presidential Search Committee Campus-Wide Survey, 80 percent of more than 300 respondents supported Wilson for the position. Respondents said they believe Wilson is well-positioned to handle UI challenges and opportunities.

She was selected by the regents in late April 2021 and is set to serve a five-year term unless the regents extend her contract. Her annual salary is $600,000.

As the 22nd president of the UI, Wilson oversees 31,206 students, 25,287 employees, a sprawling health care system, and a reputation as a top-tier writing university. She replaced President Bruce Harreld, who held office from 2015-21.

Wilson is a lifelong academic with a background in journalism and communication arts.

Wilson earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1979 and 1985. She then spent 12 years at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a faculty member before she moved to the University of Illinois system. While there, she served the system in a variety of capacities, including her most recent position as the executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs.

While at the University of Illinois system, Wilson served as the primary liaison to the University of Illinois Systems Board of Trustees and led two diversity and one sexual misconduct committees.

She also led a system-wide initiative to promote leadership opportunities for women in faculty positions and spearheaded a $2 million initiative to celebrate the impact of the arts and humanities. Wilson also focused on the recruitment of underrepresented minority faculty members.

Colleagues and students at the University of Illinois system touted Wilson as a strong leader who embraces connection building in higher education.

In her first year at the UI, Wilson spent time building relationships and trust with the community.

Wilson spent the year meeting with academic colleges and various student groups across campus to learn more about the university and why students choose to come to the UI. Each year, the university president conducts a President’s Leadership class offered to second-year students to develop their leadership skills.

Meet the Iowa state Board of Regents The state Board of Regents govern Iowa’s three public universities and Iowa’s two special schools. The regents’ decisions impact students, faculty, and staff at the UI.

The state Board of Regents is typically made up of nine members and is appointed by Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Regents must be approved by two-thirds of the Iowa Senate before they take their positions. The board is currently in the process of filling the vacant ninth spot.

Regents’ terms last six years, but the student regent that is elected to the board serves until their time at their university concludes.

Nancy Boettger

The regents set university tuition and housing rates, approve construction and projects on university properties, hire university presidents, and declares states of emergency, such as when they moved all classes to be virtual at the beginning of the pandemic.

The current student regent is Abigail Crow, who is a student at the University of Iowa. The regents have had a student on the board since 1973 when former UI law student Steve Zumbach was appointed.

Crow was appointed on April 16, 2021, and her term expires on April 20, 2027.

Vice President for Student Life Sarah Hansen Since March 2020, the vice president for Student affairs has been Hansen, who oversees student employment, involvement, and many aspects of students’ life on campus.

President and CEO for Center for Advancement Lynette Marshall Marshall oversees the UI’s efforts to get ahead through philanthropy and engagement. The Center for Advancement brings together the UI Foundation and the UI Alumni Association. Marshall has been with the UI since 2006. mitigation.

Kregel has been the university’s vice president and provost since 2021. Kregel has served on several committees within the University of Iowa, including the presidential search committee and the strategic planning committee.

Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations and University Architect Rod Lehnertz Lehnertz has served as the Vice President for Finance and Operations since 2014. His duties entail looking over the university’s finances and improvement projects. Prior to this role, Lehnertz was the director of Planning, Design and Construction in Facilities Management. Lehnertz is an Iowa native and has been with the UI since 1994.

Executive Officer & Associate Vice President, Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Liz Tovar Tovar has represented the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion since 2021 when she was named the executive officer and associate vice president. Before 2021, she served internally in the position. Tovar oversees the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Center for Diversity & Enrichment and Diversity Resources. Tovar has been with the UI since 2013 after working for various institutions like the University of Kansas.

Interim UIHC CEO Kimberly Hunter Following the departure of Suresh Gunasekaran in 2022, Kimberly Hunter is currently serving as the interim University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics CEO. Hunter has been with the UIHC for a year and was the chief nurse executive prior to being named the interim CEO in the spring.

A UI students’ guide to the Where to find employment opportunities best places to on campus

Students can study in any building across campus, adventure to one of three libraries, or head downtown to a cafe.

The UI offers many different study locations, both on and off-campus. When looking for a good place to study on campus there are a few things to take into consideration.

Each residence hall comes equipped with different study rooms and multipurpose rooms, lounges, etc., but it is fun to explore campus and find other locations just outside your dorm to get stuff done.

Being employed on campus has financial and academic benefits for Hawkeyes. Students at the University of Iowa who are employed statistically have higher GPAs and are more likely not to drop out and graduate on time, according to University Human Resources.

Student jobs provide chances to connect with faculty, staff, and other students, some who may be outside their field of study. Students practice good time management balancing a work life with school, along with other valuable skills that aid in finding employment after graduation.

Three organizations in the Johnson County are available for individuals seeking support or immediate help including the Women’s Resource and Action Center, the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

The University of Iowa has many resources regarding sexual misconduct. Sexual misconduct can include instances such as sexual assault, sexual harassment, and domestic violence. UI students can also volunteer and participate in events at the following organizations.

Women’s Resource and Action Center

Domestic Violence Intervention Program

The Women’s Resource and Action Center, known as WRAC, is a feminist organization at the UI that works to create more equity for individuals of all identities. WRAC is located across from the major Eastside dorms at the Bowman House on 230 N. Clinton St. Last semester, WRAC reinstated its demonstration, Take Back the Night Rally, which is a nationwide movement that stands against sexual violence, according to WRAC.

The Domestic Violence Intervention Program, known as DVIP, provides confidential services and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and human trafficking. DVIP serves several surrounding counties to Johnson County, where the UI is located. The program was opened first as a shelter that offered counseling and a 24-hour crisis line in 1980. It is located at 1105 S. Gilbert Court in Iowa City.

Rape Victim Advocacy Program The Rape Victim Advocacy Program, known as RVAP, is a resource for students affected by sexual violence to receive free and confidential support. The organization provides support groups and workshops, such as a free dance workshop for survivors of sexual violence. RVAP offers direct service, crisis line, and prevention advocacy volunteer positions for individuals who are interested. The Iowa City Downtown District Pedestrian Mall in the center of the city has nightlife and food venues for all students to enjoy.

Pedestrian Mall provides intersection of campus and Iowa City

In the center of the Iowa City Downtown District, the Pedestrian Mall provides the city with its own unique flavor and has a little bit of an edge hidden under the surface.

Located across the street from the Old Capitol Mall and not far from the Pentacrest, the Ped Mall makes for a superb area for students to consume goods and services of all kinds. Constructed in the 1970s, the outdoor, traffic-free commercial center features a myriad of shopping, dining, entertainment options, and a playground that will be rebuilt this summer.

Hosting over two dozen dining options, the Ped Mall acts as the site of student favorites like Roxxy,

Donnely’s Pub, and Brothers Bar and Grill. The mall is also the site of Bread Garden Market, a grocery store and eatery owned by Jim Mondanaro, who will soon open ReUnion in the Ped Mall.

Stores like Textiles, Ragstock, and Revival all make for great shopping options for students looking for fashionable clothing at a low price.

Live music can be heard both inside and out as street musicians fill the air with their riffs and melodies, making for a vibrant city experience. The 2019 renovations include the addition of more trees and benches that provide plenty of seating and space to enjoy the open air of the Ped Mall.

Iowa City is a hotspot for theater and live music, with an abundance of venues that offer a variety of arts. From Riverside Theatre’s new location to the Englert Theatre’s classic performances, Iowa City has a great deal of talent to enjoy. As the city continues ramping up after pandemic-related restrictions are lifted, the arts here continue to grow concurrently.

221 E Washington St The Englert Theatre has presented a great deal of fantastic music in the last year. With performances from artists including Lucy Dacus, Indigo De Souza, Beach Bunny, and Soccer Mommy, stunning talent makes its way through the theatre. Englert also hosts the Mission Creek Festival, which returned to in-person shows this year for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Featuring a great deal of talent, the Englert Theatre is not a venue to miss.

Elray’s Live and Dive

Along the Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City, Riverside Theatre opened its new location near the epicenter of arts in the city. Since opening in the new location, the company has produced plenty of shows that ask important questions. Executed with care and skill, Riverside Theatre has made a mark on the community for creating quality work.

Located on Iowa Ave., Elray’s Live and Dive is just a year old and already a well-known music hotspot downtown. Known primarily for its live country concerts from local and national talent, music from all genres has been played there.

Gabe’s

332 E Washington St Gabe’s has been a staple in the Iowa City area for decades. Previously hosting Nirvana and Weird Al Yankovic among other popular artists that have gone on to accomplish great things, Gabe’s has a reputation for presenting great music. As of late, there has also been an abundance of themed nights, such as Emo Nite and Taylor Swift Night, all of which draw in a great crowd and a lot of fun.

Hancher 141 Park Rd

Hancher Auditorium, the largest performance venue on campus, features professional touring dance, music and theater performances. Hancher has been the cultural hub of the University of Iowa campus. Tickets for UI students are often discounted.

Film Scene

FilmScene is a non-profit venue that often shows independent and indie films. The organization partners with the University of Iowa’s Bijou Film Board to plan screenings that are of interest to UI students.

Raygun, across the street from Target, is a Midwest-owned shop selling clever and punny Hawkeye Merchandise, along with other humorous t-shirts, stickers, and posters.

Over on Iowa Avenue is Beno’s Flowers and Gifts. The whimsical plant shop sells only fresh flowers and natural plant products with a mission to have handmade and sustainable gifts.

Around the corner on Dubuque Street is the welcoming local bookstore Prairie Lights. Prairie Lights has multiple levels full of books for every type of reader. The store also holds in-store readings by popular authors and is home to a cozy café.

Hawkeyes can find these stores and much more in Iowa City’s Downtown District.

Pitaya, located in the Ped Mall, is a women’s boutique that prides itself in keeping a consistently updated collection of trendy and affordable clothing for college students on a budget.

Similar is White Rabbit on South Linn Street — they carry new clothing, jewelry, witty cards, paintings, and stickers. With its creaky floorboards, the artsy boutique has a vintage section in the back that adds to its uniqueness.

In the Old Capital Town Center, Blick Art Materials is a staple for student artists. The store offers the most extensive selection of art materials at one shop in the whole state of Iowa. Artists can find

paints, brushes, canvases, and more on the shelves.

Right down the street is Beadology, a colorful jewelry store that sells a multitude of beads from around the world. The shop also offers instructional classes on beadwork including, wirework, stringing, and glasswork.

From trendy fashion boutiques to airy plant shops, cozy bookstores and favorite chain stores, Iowa City’s Downtown District has nearly everything. Hawkeyes are sure to find what they need, and more, right on campus.

Going back down the road, kitty-corner to the Pentacrest is Target. The convenient two-level grocery and retail chain offers all kinds of dorm-room essentials for students.

Students of the University of Iowa have an abundance of choices to entertain and impress their families when the parents come to visit their Hawkeye.

There are several great options when it comes to welcoming parents to Iowa City, from eating out at any of the many restaurants, bars, or grills downtown, to making a visit to the Hawk Shop for some Hawkeye gear, or even taking a scenic stroll along the Iowa River.

Restaurants like Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers in the Old Capitol Mall, or Pop’s BBQ on the corner of Market Street and Dubuque Street are wonderful family-friendly options. For a higher-end dining experience, steakhouses like Iowa Chophouse on Washington Street and Joseph’s Steakhouse on Clinton Street are also excellent choices that will surely impress any parent.

After dinner, students and their parents could take a stroll through the outdoor Pedestrian Mall, located in the heart of downtown Iowa City. A walkabout of the Pentacrest and the iconic Old Capitol would also make for a great outing, before heading down to the Iowa Memorial Union to browse the Hawk Shop.

For families hoping to explore more, a tour of the Pentacrest Museums is always a unique option. Visitors can see the infamous Rusty the Giant Sloth at the UI’s Museum of Natural History in Macbride Hall on Clinton Street, or schedule a tour of the historic Old Capitol at the heart of campus.

GreenState Credit Union

Located at 500 Iowa Ave, a bit further than the other financial institutions, GreenState is the largest credit union in Iowa. The institution is known to offer good rates and low fees in returning profits to its members.

All UI students, staff, alumni, Iowa residents, and select Wisconsin and Minnesota residents are eligible to join.

National Banks

Take advantage of free & low-cost activities

Financial independence can be difficult at first if you don’t set a budget. Budgeting allows you to keep track of your expenses while avoiding overspending. Everyone will have a different budget, but budgeting is the first step to good financial decision-making.

There are many low-cost and free entertainment opportunities available across Iowa City for students.

Recreation Services regularly hosts different intramural activities throughout the year, including sand volleyball, basketball, and e-sports. The CAMBUS system is free and Iowa City transit is a low-cost method for students to travel around the Iowa City area.

Getting a Job Becoming a student employee might seem overwhelming, but it provides additional sources of income and additional spending flexibility.

Students who work 1-20 hours per week have a higher average GPA than students who do not have a student job, according to the UI Pomerantz Career Center.

There are over 7,000 students who are employed with on-campus part-time positions, according to UI Human Resources. On-campus employment opportunities within the Division of Student Life that provide flexible hours. Downtown Iowa City businesses are also an alternative employment opportunity.

Utilize Your Meal Plan Your meal plan provides access to the dining hall locations across campus, and you should aim to use that as much as possible. Meal plans also provide flex meals that are available for use at multiple locations across the University of Iowa campus. Your meal plan can help save you from spending a lot of money at downtown restaurants.

Banking literacy Be prepared to actively track your spending and banking statements with mobile banking apps. Hills Bank in the Old Capitol Mall is also a great local banking option that offers certain benefits for UI students.

Utilizing public transportation Avoid using costly food delivery services. Walking or taking the bus to pick up food with a friend can be fun and will save you money.

Familiarize yourself with local public transportation, namely CAMBUS and Iowa City transit, and the routes that they take to figure out how to get where you want to go.

The TRANSIT app provides real-time updates and comprehensive information on bus routes as well as integrated ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft.

Meet the Iowa City City Council Seven people represent Iowa City residents, making local governmental decisions during twice monthly meetings on Tuesdays.

MAYOR BRUCE TEAGUE • • • • • First elected to the council in 2018, Teague was elected mayor in 2020 and 2022 by his fellow councilors. Teague has been a long-time resident of Iowa City, as he attended both Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. Teague will be up for reelection in 2024 and is an At-Large representative.

The Iowa City City Council is made up of seven members, each elected to serve a four-year term.

MAYOR PRO TEM MEGAN ALTER • • • Alter is serving her first term on the Iowa City City Council after being elected in 2021. Alter first ran for a council seat in 2019 but was unsuccessful.

She was voted mayor pro-tem after her first election and is an At-Large representative. She has been a member of the Iowa City community since 1995 and currently works as a Senior Resource Manager at ACT.

The mayor and mayor pro tem are elected by the other six members of the council at the beginning of new sessions.

JOHN THOMAS • • • • • Thomas currently represents District C on the Iowa City City Council. He has lived in Iowa City for 12 years alongside his family.

He first started serving on the council in 2016 and is currently on his second term on the council.

Navigating Iowa City public transportation Navigating public transportation across campus, Iowa City, and Coralville is an avenue for independence new University of Iowa students can gain. Through the use of cell phone apps and general city knowledge, students can get anywhere at almost any time with the use of public transportation. The UI CAMBUS system, Iowa City and Coralville Public Transit, and Nite Ride provide students transportation at little-to-no cost.

Iowa City and Coralville Transit

The UI recommends the use of the Transit app to access routes and plan trips in Iowa City and Coralville Transit. UI students can pay fares or buy a pass to ride the bus. Iowa City transit recently purchased four new electric buses to lower city-wide carbon emissions and use 5 percent of diesel that non-electric buses use.

University of Iowa students have access to three main systems for transportation including Iowa City and Coralville Transit, CAMBUS and Nite Ride.

Nite Ride CAMBUS The CAMBUS system is a UI student-led organization. It was founded in 1971, marking 2021 its 50th year of establishment. The bus system is accessible to all individuals and is free.

CAMBUS has 14 fixed routes for students to use and updates the lines for each semester. The bus system does not operate during most UI holidays and select holiday weekends on Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break, according to the CAMBUS website.

Nite Ride is a free late-night transportation service for UI students, faculty, and staff. The service can pick you up any time from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily.

Individuals can request rides through its website and be picked up inside the “boundaries” of the service.

To request a ride, visit niteride.its.uiowa.edu and enter your cell phone number, pick up location, drop off location, and vehicle preference as prompted.

Hawkeyes embracing identities: multicultural and international student support at the UI The Office of Multicultural and Interational Student Support and Engagement strives to support University of Iowa students with underrepresented identities along with a variety of student organizations, events, and programming.

The five Office of Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement areas, diversity programming, and more than 100 different multicultural organizations help to make the University of Iowa campus as inclusive as possible.

Each branch of MISSE seeks to provide a “Home Away From Home” environment and help students succeed both academically and socially throughout their college experience. Cultural centers also offer a variety of intra-cultural and cross cultural educational and leadership opportunities.

Established in 2003, the center’s mission is to foster fellowship and community building while creating a positive atmosphere of affirming and healing student identities.

Experience working with the news at the UI Both journalism and non-journalism majors can have the opportunity of experiencing what it is like working in the news.

The Daily Iowan The Daily Iowan is an independent, student-run newspaper at the University of Iowa. The DI reports on news occurring in Iowa City and Johnson County, as well as news and art events happening within the UI. The paper also reports on politics happening at the local and national levels, through its Ethics & Politics Initiative.

Students can apply for paid positions at the DI, where they can develop their skills in the many different areas of journalism, such as reporting, photography, and broadcasting.

The paper focuses its reporting on the university and the Iowa City community.

Students can write in various sections, including politics, sports, news, opinions, and arts.

Those interested in gaining experience in photojournalism can photograph events and important people around the Iowa City area, as well as covering the Hawkeyes.

The broadcasting wing of the news organization, DITV, displays multiple live broadcasts a week, as

well as digital and social video content and shows.

The DI has been recognized with several awards for its reporting and broadcasting throughout the years, including winning the Iowa Newspaper Association’s Newspaper of the Year award two years in a row in 2020 and 2021.

The paper has taken home seven national Pacemaker awards, most recently in 2021 with the organization’s first Online Pacemaker. The pacemaker is the equivalent of a "Pulitzer Prize" in college-level journalism.

DITV took home 13 awards in the 2021 Iowa Broadcast News Association contest, including first place in overall excellence among student broadcasts.

The UI also has as home for radio broadcasting in KRUI, the university’s student-run radio station.

Get Involved with Undergraduate Student Government Students who are interested in serving as a voice for the undergraduate student body may want to join student government and serve as a senator.

The University of Iowa Undergraduate Student Government serves all 22,000 undergraduate students at the university through weekly senate meetings, committees to represent all different areas of campus, and advocating for students at a variety of levels.

In its mission statement, USG states the organization “exists to represent, serve, and empower all University of Iowa undergraduate students.” Senators and executives’ duties include acting as the voice of the undergraduate student body by voicing concerns and comments to outside organizations including the state Board of Regents, the state Legislature, and other local/federal legislators. USG is also in charge of allocating certain funds on campus.

Students can run in an election for a USG position, which takes place every March for President, Vice-President, At-Large Senators, Independent Senators, and Constituency Senators. If students are looking to get involved as soon as possible, they can apply to be a senator or an executive when they arrive to the university in the fall.

The 2022-23 president and vice-president elect of USG are Patrick Johnson and Vera Barkosky.

Johnson and Barkosky ran for their positions on four pillars: empowerment, transparency, belonging, and service. They said by better incorporating these pillars into USG, they can make it a more welcoming space for every student on campus.

All undergraduate students on campus are encouraged to share their questions, comments, and concerns with USG whenever they feel necessary.

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon is one of the most common ways getting involved on campus.

The University of Iowa Dance Marathon is the largest student organization on campus. It provides financial support for kids on the eleventh floor of the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

In the 28 years of Dance Marathon at the UI, the organization raised $33,172,010.40 for patients at Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Participants in Dance Marathon have to reach a certain amount of fundraising

to participate in the “Big Event” held to celebrate pediatric cancer survivors and

stay on their feet for 24 hours without the use of caffeine.

Despite announcing the hybrid format a month prior to the “Big Event” because of the increase of the omicron variant, the event was still able to raise $1,361,184.28.

How to get political on campus

University of Iowa has many political opportunities and organizations for students.

Historically, Iowa has been the first state to have a say in the nation with the caucus. The strong political environment established the University of Iowa as a great place to be politically active.

Throughout the year, many Iowa politicians and national politicians make their way through campus and Iowa City.

The University of Iowa College Republicans is another partisan organization on campus that aims to spread and foster conservative thoughts and beliefs throughout the UI. Through their meetings, students can meet other like-minded individuals. The College Republicans brought former President Donald Trump's Campaign Manager Kellyanne Conway to campus in April.

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA COLLEGE REPUBLICANS

The University of Iowa University Democrats is a partisan organization that aims to bring positive social change to campus and the Democratic Party. They host political forums on campus and bring candidates for several elections to engage with UI students.

In addition to the College Republicans, there is Young Americans for Freedom, which is another conservative group on campus.

They strive to influence the Democratic Party on campus and around the state, according to their website.

OTHER POLITICAL OPPORTUNITIES Incoming students can also be a part of the Political Matters Living Learning Community, where students interested in politics, government, and social work live together on campus in a residence hall.

International students find a

in Iowa There are a plethora of opportunities and resources for international students to find support as they navigate higher education in the U.S.

The University of Iowa is known for its range of diversity when it comes to its students. With more than 200 programs for majors, minors, and certificates, international students can enroll in one of the top ranked universities in multiple areas of study.

International Students and Scholar Services assist both students and scholars with immigration matters. Each year, about 9,000 in-person visits with advisors are held. In fall 2021, more than 2,000 international students either studied or conducted post-graduate research at the UI. Some of the top countries' students originated from were China, Nigeria, and Iran.

International programs at the university are motivated by four pillars: student success, research and discovery, engagement, and diversity, equity, inclusion and collaboration. The international program also offers a passport station for students to renew or apply for passports. There are currently eight academic centers and programs that provide workshops, seminars, and lectures.

The international program offers a range of opportunities like international internships, semester-length programs, and study abroad opportunities. When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, study abroad was at a pause. Despite this, a total of 12 students virtually engaged in global internships as 165 participated in online coursework. Students have gained the virtual experience which can help determine for future travels. Students can consider the costs and workability when enrolled for online study abroad.

The International Writing Program provides creative writers around the globe the opportunity to expand their creativity skills. As the program was founded in 1967, more than 1,500 writers from 150

countries have resided at the UI. Identified writers like poets, non-fiction, and fiction writers have the option to write or research. Participants are not enrolled in UI courses and do not receive a degree.

Shortly upon your arrival at the University of Iowa campus, you’ll notice that Greek life is a common and important aspect to university students, and it has been since 1886 when Greek life first came to the UI. All sororities and fraternities on campus partake in various activities together throughout the year, but always have one common goal in mind: furthering the bond within the Fraternity and Sorority community. They do this by putting emphasis on developing a better understanding of each other while serving others and achieving academic excellence.

If this seems like something you may be interested in, check out the orientation dates for Greek life on campus, which can be found on the UI website under “Fraternity and Sorority Life.” The “Joining Requirements” page will give you all the information you need to know about connecting with Greek life at the UI. There are a lot of different options for students looking to join Greek life at the UI, which has four different councils:

The Interfraternity Council works to endorse scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship, and brotherhood to unify the fraternity community.

The Multicultural Greek Council promotes multicultural awareness to improve relations among all campus fraternities and sororities.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council was established on the belief of brotherhood/sisterhood, high scholarship, leadership, and service to others, and is historically available to African American students.

Lastly, the Panhellenic Council consists of women who work together to unite sororities, empower women, focus on common goals, and create a network of support for chapters and members.

Within these four councils, over 3,600 students at the university involved in Greek life and there are currently 45 chapters to choose.

Opportunities to experience being in the military as a student Students at the University of Iowa can benefit from joining the various military organizations on campus.

For University of Iowa students who are looking to get involved on campus and become active within the military, the university offers two branches of ROTC programs, giving students the opportunity to train for either the Army or the Air Force branches.

Air Force

The Air Force ROTC program at the UI allows members to maintain the typical college life of a student, while also giving the opportunity to take part in a supportive community full of fellow Hawkeyes who want to make a difference in the ROTC. To be eligible to participate in the university’s Air Force ROTC branch, students must maintain at least a 2.50 GPA in addition to maintaining the adequate health and fitness required to pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.

Students are also required to take aerospace studies courses, which will allow them to meet their respective graduation requirements.

Upon graduating, Air Force ROTC students are commissioned as second lieutenants and advance into a field with more than 140 prospective options.

Army

The Army ROTC gives students the opportunity to experience top-notch leadership and management skills that are needed to become a future U.S. Army Officer or for other career paths.

Enrolling in ROTC does not automatically sign students up to join the Army or put an obligation on them. Rather, students will take an ROTC class where they can receive college credit.

Requirements to join the university’s Army ROTC program include being enrolled as a full-time UI student, being a U.S. citizen, and maintaining at least a 2.50 GPA. Upon graduating, Army ROTC members are commissioned as U.S. Army Second Lieutenants and will receive specialized training in one of the 17 different Army branches and various opportunities for advanced leadership positions and post-graduate education

The Newman Center: The Newman Catholic Student Center is for students searching for a Catholic mass option.

Newman Center has a bible study for students as well as multiple mass services throughout the week that students can attend.

The Navigators: The Navigators have many programs for students. Their service is hosted on Thursday evenings, is “Nav night,” and after service there’s “After Nav Night,” where students gather together to study or do other group activities. The Navigators also do both small group sessions-bible studies or individual check-ins, one-on-one.

Salt Company: Salt Company is a youth ministry that is based out of Veritas Church in Tiffin, Iowa. Salt holds a kick-off in the beginning of the fall semester at Hubbard Park. At the

Kairos: Kairos is the college ministry for the Lutheran Church of Hope. They have live worship on Wednesday as well as the opportunity to join a small group.

Iowa City Mosque: The Mosque on W. Benton Street focuses on strengthening unity and goodwill among all Muslims. The Mosque also preaches understanding between Muslims and followers of other faiths.

Agudas Achim Congregation: For this congregation based in Coralville, all worship services are available online. They welcome all Jewish traditions and practices, and the congregation belongs to both the Reform and Conservative movements.

B’Nei B’Rith Hillel Foundation: This foundation promotes Jewish unity and continuity and actively advocating for global Jewry. This foundation does require a membership fee.

First United Methodist Church: The First United Methodist Church offers in-person worship at 10:30 A.M. on Sundays, or people can join live via their Facebook live stream or on its YouTube channel.

The church advertises that it is a community where everyone is welcome, no matter where they are in their spiritual path.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church: This parish advertises that it welcomes all people with open arms. The community is Eucharist and has the mission of both praying and worshiping. Mass is available on Sundays, with an option on YouTube for people who cannot attend in person.

Living in UI residence halls University of Iowa residence halls have different amenities and opportunities for the students who choose to live there.

The University of Iowa has nine campus residence halls open to first-year, returning, and transfer students. The residence halls are located on both the west and east sides of campus.

East side residence halls include Burge, Catlett, Currier, Daum, Mayflower, and Stanley with dining halls in Burge and Catlett. West side residence halls include Rienow, Petersen, Slater, and Hillcrest, with a dining hall in Hillcrest.

Dining hall meals can be paid for with a campus meal plan and flex meals for students who do and don’t live on campus.

There are also convenience stores located around campus that accept flex meals or Hawk Dollars as payment. C-stores are located in Burge, Mayflower, and Hillcrest. The stores sell food, drinks, and other possible necessities.

Hillcrest, Rienow, Slater, and Petersen are

closer to the UI sporting arenas and complexes as well as the UI Hospitals and Clinics. Burge, Catlett, Currier, Daum, and Stanley are located closer to the Pentacrest and downtown Iowa City.

Every residence hall has different amenities, but all have at least one dedicated area for laundry services and study areas. Catlett, Currier, Hillcrest, and Mayflower have fitness centers for students.

Students can also choose to live within a Living Learning Community on campus, where students with similar interests and identities live in an area set apart from other dorm rooms.

There are 14 LLCs on campus including “Unidos” for students who identify as Hispanic, “Young, Gifted and Black” for students who identify as African American, and a multitude of others based on majors and identities.

program provides opportunities for students with learning disabilities The University of Iowa’s REACH program ensures the college experience for all.

The University of Iowa believes in success without limitation. The UI Realizing Educational and Career Hopes program is an option for all young adults that have learning disabilities or intellectual drawbacks. The program focuses on the success of the individuals, both academically and socially.

The program offers involvement options in all UI clubs, activities, and fundraisers, as well as sporting events like basketball or football games. UI REACH also offers enrollment in their own focused curriculum, all UI classes, and Kirkwood Community College courses.

The program has made it a top priority to value its participant's success after college. Taking that into consideration, over half of REACH’s enrollment lives and work on their own outside of their parent's home. Additionally, 89 percent of the program are employed within the first year of their graduation.

The program strives to ensure that these individuals have the best options available to them and can create a life they want for themselves.

Student resources for substance use concerns The University of Iowa and student organizations create safe spaces for Hawkeyes looking to reduce their alcohol or drug use.

The University of Iowa has programs and organizations focused on students’ interactions with alcohol and drug use. The university implements procedures from a research-based Alcohol Harm Reduction Plan as well as provides confidential group resources to create a safe space to discuss substance use.

Collegiate Recovery Program The UI’s program provides a supportive environment with focuses on therapeutic and educational needs of Hawkeye students who are in recovery, considering recovery, or wanting support at any stage of addiction.

The program is facilitated through community building, social and academic support, substance-free activities, and access to resources and services.

The Collegiate Recovery Program is sponsored by Student Wellness, University Counseling Service, and the Office of the Vice President for Student Life.

Strength in Numbers Strength in Numbers is an organization at the UI offering alternative social gatherings and events for

students who do not want to socialize around drugs or alcohol.

The organization focuses on providing fun events for students to connect with while not discouraging alcohol or drug use. It is a safe, inclusive space for students in recovery or those impacted by substance abuse. There are also community service opportunities for individuals involved in the organization.

Success, Not Excess Success, Not Excess meetings create a safe space for students considering or looking to make changes in their alcohol or drug consumption. The meetings offer support to students.

The group focuses on creating goals relating to academic success, mental and physical health, and relationships through alcohol and drug abstinence or reduction.

Students who see their drug or alcohol use interfering with academic or work performance, relationships, or memory may benefit from participating in Success, Not Excess meetings. The meetings are anonymous, but group facilitators do ask students privately for their names and contact information.

Hawkeye wrestling makes history Iowa will officially add a women’s wrestling team in 2023-24, becoming the first Power Five school to sponsor the program.

Iowa became the first Power Five school to sponsor a women’s wrestling team during the 2021-22 academic year.

Hawkeye athletics director Gary Barta unveiled the women’s wrestling program on Sept. 23, 2021.

The addition of the program was the result of a Title IX lawsuit settlement, which was brought on by four women’s swimmers in 2020.

USA wrestling national assistant coach Clarissa Chun was named the Hawkeyes’ first-ever head coach on Nov. 19.

“This is a historic moment for young girls, young women across the country,” Chun said.

“This is an amazing opportunity for everyone that wants to come and compete at the University of Iowa.”

Chun has already added 10 recruits to her class of 2022. The Hawkeye recruits will be on campus in 2022-23, and Iowa will officially begin competition in 2023-24.

The Hawkeye men’s and women’s wrestling

teams will soon practice in Carver Circle, a $26.5 million, state-of-the-art facility next to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The facility, which is slated to be completed in 2024, will feature a tunnel to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa Athletics broke ground on the facility in summer 2022.

The Hawkeye men’s wrestling team finished third at both the Big Ten and NCAA Championships in the 2021-22 season.

After posting a regular season record of 14-1, senior 165-pounder Alex Marinelli won his fourth Big Ten individual title. Junior 197-pounder Jacob Warner took second place at the national championships.

Five of Iowa’s 10 regular starters from 2021-22 will return next season. Warner, 125-pounder Drake Ayala, 149-pounder Max Murin, 184-pounder Abe Assad, and heavyweight Tony Cassioppi are all likely to take the mat again in 2022-23.

Three-time 125-pound NCAA Champion Spencer Lee will also be back on the Carver-Hawkeye

Arena mat in the fall. Lee wrestled three times in 2021-22 before bowing out of the rest of the season to surgically repair two ACL tears.

Marinelli, 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman, 133-pounder Austin DeSanto, 157-pounder Kaleb Young, and 174-pounder Michael Kemerer have all wrestled their last collegiate matches.

Iowa added Real Woods — a former Stanford All-American at 141 pounds — via the transfer portal on April 2 to fill the hole left by Eierman.

Nelson Brands, now a senior, might also be back in Iowa’s starting lineup in 2022-23. Brands is the son of Hawkeye assistant coach Terry Brands.

Nelson Brands was one of the Hawkeyes’ 10 starters in 2020-21 and went 8-6 at 184 pounds in 2020-21. He missed the entire 2021-22 season with an injury.

Brands started at Iowa as a 165-pounder. He wrestled six matches at 174 pounds last year before his season was shut down.

Women’s basketball maintaining momentum The Hawkeyes will return all five starters for the second straight season in 2022-23.

Iowa women’s basketball had a historic year in 2021-22.

The Hawkeyes won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history.

Iowa earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, hosting the first two rounds of the national tournament at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes easily took down Illinois State in the first round, but the Hawkeyes’ season ended in heartbreak as they were upset by 10th-seeded Creighton in the second round on their home court.

Iowa ended their season with a 24-8 overall record.

In 2022-23, the Lisa Bluder-coached squad is returning all five starters and almost all of their scoring for the second straight season. Center Monika Czinano is returning for a fifth season at Iowa. Seniors McKenna Warnock, Gabbie Marshall, and Kate Martin, and reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Caitlin Clark will also come back to the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes are returning 11 total players from the 2021-22 championship squad. Juniors Shateah Wetering and Sharon Goodman didn’t play in the 2021-22 season because of ACL tears, but they are slated to return in 2022-23.

Iowa is also adding Central Michigan transfer Molly Davis, as well as freshmen Hannah Stuelke, Jada Gyamfi and Taylor McCabe, which is the 20th-ranked 2022 recruiting class, per espnW.

The new-look men’s basketball team Iowa lost both Keegan Murray and Jordan Bohannon, who combined for 40 percent of the Hawkeyes’ scoring.

After Luka Garza left the Hawkeye men’s basketball team following the 2020-21 season, Keegan Murray emerged as Iowa’s new star.

Murray broke the Hawkeyes’ single-season scoring record with 822 points in 2021-22, leading Iowa to its third Big Ten Tournament title in program history.

The Hawkeyes, however, could not capitalize off their Big Ten Tournament title, falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament four days later.

Iowa ended its season with a 26-10 overall record.

Murray earned consensus first-team All-American honors following the 2021-22 season and left Iowa for the NBA. Iowa is losing over 40 percent of its scoring between Murray and departing sixth-year senior Jordan Bohannon, who ran out of eligibility.

The Hawkeyes are also losing point guard Joe Toussaint, who transferred to West Virginia for 2022-23.

But guard Connor McCaffery, the son of 13th-year head coach Fran McCaffery, is returning for a sixth year with the program. Connor McCaffery averaged 2.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 34 games in 2021-22.

Iowa is returning three starters for the 2022-23 season: junior forward Patrick McCaffery, junior guard Tony Perkins, and fifth-year senior center Filip Rebraca.

The Iowa women’s gymnastics team continued its run of success during the 2021-22 season.

Although Iowa was unable to repeat as conference champs after capturing the Big Ten title in 2021, there were plenty of bright spots in the 2021-22 season.

The Hawkeyes defeated rival Iowa State, went toe-to-toe with conference champ Michigan, and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships.

Iowa finished the season with a team score of 197.075 points at the NCAA Raleigh Regional Final, the second-highest single-meet team score in program history.

After the GymHawks bowed out of the team competition, Adeline Kenlin moved on in the national tournament individually on the beam.

She tied for second in the country with a 9.950 score, the highest score ever recorded by an Iowa athlete at NCAA Championships. Kenlin became the first Hawkeye to advance to the national finals in any event since Clair Kaji in 2017.

The GymHawk program said goodbye to seven seniors after the regional final including Kaji, Lauren Guerin, and Mackenzie Vance.

Allie Gilchrist, Alex Greenwald, Bridget Kilian, and Carina Tolan also graduated last spring.

Iowa, however, will enter 2022-23 with a young core revolving around returning All-Americans Kenlin and JerQuavia Henderson.

Iowa head coach Larissa Libby signed a contract extension through 2026 this season. Libby has spent over two decades in Iowa City.

Kickin’ it Who starts as Iowa’s QB? at Kinnick The Iowa football team went 10-4 last season and has a quarterback competition underway heading into the 2022 season.

The University of Iowa’s football stadium hosts thousands of Hawkeye fans every fall.

The Iowa football team is coming off a 10-4 season that saw the Hawkeyes win the Big Ten West division and make an appearance in the Citrus Bowl.

The Hawkeyes started the season 6-0 and received a No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press top-25 poll before dropping back-to-back midseason games against Purdue and Wisconsin. Four straight wins to end the regular season — against Northwestern, Minnesota, Illinois, and Nebraska — propelled Iowa to a share of the Big Ten West title.

Minnesota’s upset win over Wisconsin in the final week of the season sent Iowa to the Big Ten Championship Game, its first since 2015. At Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Iowa lost the conference title game, 42-3, to Big Ten East Champion Michigan. The Hawkeyes ended their 2021 season with a 20-17 loss to Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz, the program’s all-time leader in wins, just finished his 23rd season as Iowa’s head coach. Ferentz recently signed a contract extension that will keep him in Iowa City through the 2029 season.

The Hawkeyes have 17 starters from 2021 returning for 2022 (eight on offense, seven on defense, and two on special teams). Iowa will be without nine of its starters from last season, most notably consensus All-American center Tyler Linderbaum, All-Big Ten defensive back Dane Belton, and the program’s leading rusher the past three seasons: running back Tyler Goodson.

Spencer Petras, Iowa’s starting quarterback the past two seasons, returns for his senior season in 2022. Petras is competing with Alex Padilla and Joey Labas for the starting job.

Kinnick Stadium, the University of Iowa football program’s home stadium, opened in 1929. Nearly a century later, it continues to house thousands of passionate Hawkeye fans on fall Saturday afternoons.

Every game, fans at the 69,250-seat stadium experience some of the traditions that make up a college football-filled afternoon in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes will swarm onto the field with AC/DC’s “Back and Black” and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” roaring over the speakers.

A portion of Nile Kinnick’s Heisman Trophy acceptance speech will play on the video boards right before kickoff. And at the end of the first quarter, everyone in the stadium will wave at the onlooking children’s hospital.

Iowa is 304-189-15 (.612) all-time at Kinnick Stadium. Last season, the Hawkeyes went 6-1 in their home stadium last season, winning games against Indiana, Kent State, Colorado State, Penn State, Minnesota, and Illinois, while losing to Purdue.

Iowa’s 30-7 win over Kent State last season was the program’s 300th win inside Kinnick Stadium. Iowa’s first win in the venue was a 46-0 victory over Monmouth on Oct. 5, 1929.

The state became the seventh Big Ten school to celebrate at least 300 wins in its home stadium.

The Hawkeyes are scheduled to play seven home games next season: South Dakota State (Gold Out Game), Iowa State (Cy-Hawk series), Nevada (family weekend), Michigan (ANF Black and Gold Spirit Game), Northwestern (Homecoming), Wisconsin (Military Appreciation Black Out Game), and Nebraska (Heroes Game/Senior Day).

Kinnick Stadium is located at the intersection of Hawkins Dr. and Melrose Ave. in Iowa City, near Duane Banks Field and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Iowa field hockey aiming to reload in 2022 The Hawkeyes came up short of their NCAA and Big Ten tournament aspirations last year.

This season, they’ll look to live up to their expectations.

The Iowa field hockey team fell short of its lofty expectations in 2021. Last year, the Hawkeyes rose as high as No. 1 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.

Iowa did not, however, win the Big Ten or NCAA tournaments.

The Hawkeyes won their first 16 games of the year.

Iowa came up just short of a perfect regular season record, falling to Northwestern, 2-1, in its 17th and final game.

In all, the Hawkeyes lost three of the last four games they played in 2021. Iowa fell to Michigan, 3-2, in the first round of the Big Ten Championships.

In the second round of the NCAA Championships, Iowa lost to Northwestern, 1-0. The Hawkeyes beat the American University Eagles to advance to the second

round of the national tournament.

Two of the three losses Iowa suffered in 2021 came against Northwestern. The Wildcats won the 2021 NCAA Tournament after they were bounced in the first round of the Big Ten Championships.

The Hawkeyes will be without now-graduated forwards Maddy Murphy and Ellie Holley in 2022. Murphy and Holley tied for the team lead in points in 2021 with 27 each. Murphy and Holley scored seven and eight goals, respectively in 2021.

Iowa’s top goal-scorer, Ciara Smith, will be back this year. She racked up 10 goals last season.

Iowa’s first game of the year is scheduled for Aug. 26.

The Hawkeyes will take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Soccer seeking another strong season The Hawkeyes advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals during their 2021-22 campaign and returns most of their roster for 2022-23.

The Iowa soccer team tied for fourth in the Big Ten standings during the 2021-22 season, and the Hawkeyes are seeking to build off that success in the fall.

Led by head coach Dave DiIanni, the Hawkeyes went 12-6-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the conference last fall. Despite advancing to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, the Hawkeyes fell short of an NCAA Tournament bid after qualifying in the previous two seasons.

As DiIanni starts his ninth season at the Iowa Soccer Complex, the Hawkeyes return much of their defense that allowed one goal per game last fall. They retained two reliable goalkeepers — redshirt senior Monica Wilhelm and junior Macy Enneking — who have split starts the past two year.

On the backline, the Hawkeyes usually have four defenders. Fifth-year senior Sara Wheaton and senior Sam Cary will provide veteran experience, along with graduate transfer Cassidy Formanek, who comes to Iowa City from the University

of Houston.

In the midfield, Hailey Rydberg returns for her fifth season in the Black and Gold, and she led last year’s squad with seven assists. Sophomore Addie Bundy, who recorded six assists during her freshman campaign, should play alongside Rydberg.

Midfielder Josie Durr should return as a redshirt senior after she missed the 2021-22 season because of an injury. She started 28 games in her first three seasons.

Iowa’s 2021-22 offense was eighth in the Big Ten with 1.55 goals per game. After losing forward Alyssa Walker, who tallied a team-high nine goals last season, the Hawkeyes will look to sophomore forward Kenzie Roling to improve their attack.

Roling totaled six goals in 18 games during her first collegiate season.

Since starting at Iowa in 2014, DiIanni has compiled an 80-63-11 record with one Big Ten Tournament title under his belt.

Iowa track and field looks to three-peat as Big Ten indoor champs in 2022-23 The Hawkeye men earned their second consecutive indoor conference championship in 2022.

The Iowa track and field team continued to establish itself as one of the premier programs in the nation during the 2021-2022 season.

The Hawkeye men won their second straight Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 26, and Director of Track and Field Joey Woody repeated as Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year.

The Hawkeyes saw success at the national level as well. Eleven total Hawkeye entries — nine individuals and two relay teams — advanced to NCAA Indoor Championships.

Sophomore Jenoah McKiver won the Big Ten

Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year Award, earned two All-American honors, and finished second in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

He broke Iowa’s indoor and outdoor 400-meter times in 2021-22.

Although McKiver was injured for a portion of the 2022 outdoor season, he will be a top contender for the indoor and outdoor 400-meter NCAA titles in 2022-23 while the Hawkeyes try for their third consecutive Big Ten men’s indoor title.

Young cross country squad looking to improve Amid an up-and-down season, the Hawkeye XC squad showed promise for fall 2022.

The Iowa cross country program closed the 2021 season with a top-15 finish at the Hawkeye-hosted NCAA Midwest Regional.

The Iowa men and women each won one meet this year. The Hawkeye men won the Hawkeye Invite to begin the season, and the women won Nebraska’s Dirksen-Greeno Invite.

Both the Hawkeye men and women teams also competed in the Gans Creek Classic and Bradley

Pink Classic.

With just three seniors leaving the men’s squad and two graduating from the women’s team, the Hawkeyes will return the majority of the roster in 2022-23.

Noah Healy, Jeff Roberts, and Konnor Sommer are graduating from the men’s team, and Mallory King and Jessica McKee have run their final race for the women.

Iowa women’s swim and dive looking for fresh start in 2022-23 The Hawkeyes didn’t win a single meet in 2021-22 as they competed with a slim, 13-athlete roster.

Iowa women’s swim and dive struggled in 2021-22. The Hawkeyes posted an 0-7 record in dual meets, finished last at the Big Ten Championships, and had no NCAA Championship qualifiers.

Iowa had just 13 athletes on its roster last season. The Hawkeyes had a team of 34 as recently as 2019-20.

Iowa’s shrunken roster is the result of a lawsuit four ex-Hawkeye swimmers brought against the University of Iowa in September 2020. Sage Ohlensehlen, Alex Puccini, Christina Kaufman, and Kelsey Drake alleged the UI had violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 when it announced the discontinuation of its NCAA Division I women’s swim and dive program in August 2020.

Iowa men’s and women’s swim and dive were both slated for

discontinuation at the end of the 2020-21 academic year. An out-of-court settlement between the four women’s swimmers and the UI led to the reinstatement of the Hawkeye women’s swim and dive program. The men’s swim and dive team is still discontinued.

The 2021-22 season was Nathan Mundt’s first as head coach of the Hawkeyes. He replaced Marc Long, who directed the Iowa men’s and women’s swim and dive programs for 17 years.

Long stepped down from his position on April 20, 2021. Mundt took over a month later.

Mundt was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Long from 2008-16. Mundt was coach of the Iowa Flyers Swim Club — an Iowa City-based club swim team that practices in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center — from 2016-21.

Tennis excited to Iowa volleyball continue development welcomes new head coach In 2021-22, the Hawkeyes earned three of their seven wins during the last six matches of the season.

Jim Barnes will lead the Hawkeyes in 2022-23.

The Jim Barnes era of Iowa volleyball is set to begin in 2022-23. Barnes was hired as the Hawkeyes' new head coach on Dec. 28, 2021.

Barnes previously coached at Tulane University from 2016-2021, where he led the Blue Wave to a record of 18-14 in his last season with the program.

Former Hawkeye head coach Vicki Brown was fired on Nov. 4 following a 3-19 start to the 2021 season. Assistants Dave Brown and Willam Tatge stepped in to be co-head coaches to finish the season.

Under Tatge and Brown, Iowa won three of its last eight games to finish the 2021 season, including a win over Indiana in the two coaches' debut and a senior night victory against Maryland.

Freshman setter Jenna Splitt transferred to Butler after

the end of the season. Splitt had a successful freshman year, finishing second on the squad in assists with 223.

Senior outside hitter Courtney Buzzerio will play for Pittsburgh as a graduate transfer for the 2022 season.

Buzzerio was named second-team All-Big Ten in 2021 and led the Hawkeyes in kills with 436 in the 2021 campaign.

Senior middle blocker Hannah Clayton transferred to Purdue for the 2022 season where she will be a graduate transfer. Clayton finished with 89 blocks on the season.

Outside hitter Audrey Black and setter Bailey Ortega will return to the Hawkeyes this fall. Black recorded 46 kills for the Hawkeyes in her sophomore season, and Ortega registered 838 assists.

The Hawkeyes have added seven players via the transfer portal since Barnes was hired.

The Iowa tennis team played its best matches at the end of the 2021-22 season. The Hawkeyes earned three of their seven wins this season over the final six contests of the year.

Iowa beat Rutgers and then Michigan State twice, including a 4-3 win in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City.

Iowa only had six active players for the majority of the 2022 spring season, so every player had to participate in both a singles and doubles match.

Four of those six athletes — sophomores Marissa Schmidt and Barbora Pokorna, junior Mehra Vipasha, and senior Samantha Mannix — will return to Iowa City.

Alexa Noel, the 2021 Big Ten Freshman and Player of the Year, did not participate in any spring matches because of an ankle injury. Noel transferred to Miami following the 2021-22 season.

Pokorna was the only Hawkeye to post a winning singles record this spring, going 12-5 in 17 completed matches.

“I think that it was overall a season of learning and growing and I think the team really came together late in the season,” head coach Sasha Schmid told The Daily Iowan following the season. “I think hopefully we can build on that and have a good summer and kind of reload and get ready for next season.”

Iowa has two recruits — Pia Kranholdt from Germany and Daianne Hayashida of Peru— set to join the Hawkeyes next fall.

Kranholdt and her high school team won the German national title and represented Germany at the World Championships. Hayashida won a gold medal in doubles and took bronze in singles at the 2021 Pan American Games in December 2021.

Iowa Heartlanders bring hockey to Iowa City area

Coralville’s professional minor hockey franchise, housed in Xtream Arena, completed their inaugural season in 2021-22.

The Iowa Heartlanders are a professional minor league hockey franchise that competes at Xtream Arena in Coralville. Iowa’s 2021-22 campaign marked their inaugural season.

The Heartlanders are members of the ECHL, which serves as the NHL’s “AA” affiliate. They are affiliated with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild and AHL’s Iowa Wild.

In their first season, the Heartlanders finished 29-33-9-1 and last place in the seven-team ECHL Central Division. They missed the Kelly Cup Playoffs, as only the top four teams in each division qualified for a postseason berth.

With one of the youngest rosters in the league, the Heartlanders started out poorly at 5-12-2-1. But they improved as their campaign progressed, including a stretch where the Heartlanders won nine out of 10 games that propelled them to 26-24-6-1 on the season. Toward the end of the season, they struggled in the final month of the season to fall to last place.

Forward Kris Bennett was named the 2021-22 ECHL Rookie of the Year after recording 73 points. His 35 goals were the first time a rookie owned at least a share of the league lead since the 1991-92 season. Bennett, who was the Heartlanders’ first-ever captain, also earned a spot on the ECHL All-Second and All-Rookie Teams.

Goaltender Trevin Kozlowski was selected for the 2021-22 ECHL Community Service Award, as the Army-West Point graduate volunteered with the Iowa City VA Medical Center and Salute to the Fallen in the Iowa City/Coralville area while with the Heartlanders.

Forward Ryan Kuffner led the Heartlanders with 46 assists, and goaltender Corbin Kaczperski recorded a .921 saves percentage, the highest on the club.

Head coach Gerry Fleming and assistant coach Derek Damon will lead the Heartlanders for the second straight season. The 2022-23 regular season will run from October-April and includes 26 home games.
