Chamber celebrates 75 years
I
n 2014 the Chamber will celebrate 75 years as the premier advocacy organization for business in Springville. Throughout its history, the Chamber has worked tirelessly to promote a healthy and vibrant economy while protecting and advancing the interests of our members and the community as a whole. The Chamber works in conjunction with citizens, businesses, educational and governmental partners to provide a positive business environment and improve the quality of life in Utah. The Chamber has taken steps to sharpen the focus of our activities based on the needs of our unique business community. We are developing new programs and improving existing ones in an effort to increase the value of the time you spend involved in Chamber activities. You will see these changes in January when we publish our “2014 Action Plan,” which details our new programs and services. In pursuit of our goal to bring in new members and continue to meet the needs of our existing members, we will provide multiple networking opportunities. Members participate in our networking programs in an effort to grow their businesses and in the process improve the overall economic environment of our local communities. Membership is a convenient way to meet new people, locate business opportunities and gain information that is pertinent to your business.
Our success is fueled by not only a dedicated and experienced Chamber staff but by the spirit of volunteerism in our business community and the citizens of Springville. Best place to live in Utah County
I
hope that you feel as fortunate as I, to live in a community like Springville. We are now going on the third year in a row of being voted the “Best Place to Live in Utah County” and
I couldn’t agree more. We have one of the most up to date libraries in the State of Utah. On average 1,700 patrons a day visit this extraordinary facility. We have one of the most beautiful art museums in the West where thousands visit annually. One of the most exquisite and profitable golf courses is located a short drive from town in the beautiful Hobble Creek Canyon. Canyon parks are filled on summer weekends with over 2,000 visitors spending money in our community and enjoying what Springville has to offer. In the winter the canyon takes on a different appearance when transformed to a beautiful winter wonderland with snow shoeing, tubing and cross country skiing, all city-sponsored at reasonable prices. To cap our community festivities off; we have hundreds of children and adults visit the new Splash Pad and water feature located at the Civic Center Park during the summer months. It’s fun, it’s free, well used and another benefit to our residents. As the mayor, and speaking in behalf of the Springville City Council, we hope that wherever possible you are supportive of the local businesses, for generally speaking they are supportive of our community. Take another look around at the variety of businesses that support Springville City through sales taxes.
We have one of the best Wal-Mart’s in the state and a myriad of businesses surrounding it. Main Street is filled with businesses where some have many decades of experience and serving the residents of Springville. ur city is privileged to have four beautiful, intelligent, talented and service oriented young women to represent us throughout our community. Miss Springville/Mapleton and her royalty represent our city at ribbon cuttings, luncheons, meetings, and at various public speaking assignments.
The Miss Springville/Mapleton Pageant is sponsored by the cities of Springville and Mapleton and is a part of the Miss America franchise. The winner progresses on to the Miss Utah competition and possibly on to the Miss America competition. This pageant would not be possible without the support of the
great businesses in our community. The scholarships given to these amazing young women come from donations given from businesses who want to make a difference. The scholarships awarded to these young women go towards furthering their education. In 2013, the scholarship awards were: Miss Springville/Mapleton, $3000; first attendant, $800; second attendant, $600; and third attendant, $400. Additional awards are given for Children’s Miracle Network fund-raising winner, $100; Spirit of Miss Springville/ Mapleton, $50; and Miss Photogenic, $50. The Miss America franchise partners with the Children’s Miracle Network to raise money for children in need of medical treatment. Miss Springville/Mapleton, along with working on her own service platform of choice, also works to earn money to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network and to further this great cause. Miss Springville/Mapleton would like to thank our community’s great businesses that make such great strides to support our city.

History of an artistic city
F
irst explored in 1776 by Father Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, a Franciscan, Springville was originally settled in 1850 by eight pioneer families who crossed the plains to the Salt Lake Valley from the East and were subsequently directed by Brigham Young to settle 50 miles further south. Incorporated in February 1853, the city was first called Hobble Creek by the early pioneers, because their horses were often hobbled (by loosely tying their front feet together) and left along the stream to graze in the lush grass. If the horses wandered into the creek, the hobbles came off in the water. Thus, the settlement earned its original name. Later, as the town grew, the name was changed to Springville, after the Fort Springville, named such because of the many freshwater springs in the area, particularly near the fort. The original name was not completely lost, however, as the canyon stream (and associated canyons), a local elementary school, and city-owned golf course have retained the name Hobble Creek. Springville is known as “Art City” due to its strong development of the arts. Springville is home to the Springville Museum of Art, Utah’s oldest museum for the visual fine arts (circa 1937). The museum, housed in an historic Spanish Colonial Revival-style building, showcases collections of many well-known artists, both local and national, including collections of Utah art, a major Soviet collection, early Americana, and the European Steed collection. Springville is the birthplace of noted sculptor Cyrus Dallin. The main street is dotted with bronze statues, including several from local sculptors Gary Price and Jeff Decker. Springville is a thriving community which has experienced steady growth over the past 10 years. The current population is projected to grow to more than 50,000 over the next 10 years, in line with the expected future expansion of its commercial, office, retail and industrial sectors along the city’s I-15 corridor.

Catch flight at the airport
D
uring the late 1920s and the early 1930s, the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) offered to build airports for cities on the condition that participating cities provide the required acreage of fenced land with a road access. Spanish Fork City elected to participate, and the current 160 acre airport was built and certified by the Utah Aeronautics Board (UAB) and Civil Aviation Board (CAB), the forerunner of the FAA, in the summer of in 1931. Shortly after, Payson and Provo cities also declared a desire to build airports, but were discouraged by the UAB and the CAB because their airports would be too close to the Spanish Fork Airport. Then, from 1935-36, Springville City petitioned to build their own airport. Again, the UAB and CAB denied the request because it would be too close to the Spanish Fork Airport, and suggested Springville team-up with Spanish Fork. This they did, and, under the direction of Mayor John Booth, Springville paid Spanish Fork one half of Spanish Fork’s tallied airport costs to that date.
As a final condition of participation, Springville purchased the necessary land from Mark Cook and built its own airport access road that ran from the junction of 1600 South and Highway 89 west to the current Spanish Fork Main Street and then diagonally in a southwesterly direction to the newly constructed gravel runway. There, on the east side of the runway, Springville also constructed some concrete parking aprons. Other items of interest: Thorns of Springville provided the gravel for the original airport runway. Also, Springville’s participation in the airport was encouraged by a Dr. Petty and a Mr. Claudin who at the time were desirous of attracting an aircraft manufacturing business from California to Utah. (The source of this historical sketch is a Feb 9, 2001 interview of Ralph Woodhouse, the original airport fixed-base operator (FBO), by his son, Tom Woodhouse.) The Spanish Fork/Springville Airport is currently managed jointly by both cities with recommendations from an Airport Board comprised of unpaid volunteers from both cities.

LOCAL EVENTS CALENDAR Easter Egg Hunt Springville Rotary Club sponsors an annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Springville High School football field at 10 a.m. the Saturday before Easter. Children are divided into three age groups and then allowed to collect Easter candy that has been spread out over the field. Some candy is specially marked as the grand prize winners. Free and open to the public. Hershey Track and Field Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate. Elementary grades 3 through 6 use a field day to participate in the event scheduled through the schools and City Recreation each Spring. Grades 7 through 9 are done together on a separate day. Winners will practice on the city team during the summer and participate in the State meet in June. Indian Festival of Utah Every May, Springville hosts the annual Indian Festival of Utah in Spring Acres Arts Park, the state’s only cultural event devoted to East Indian, Pakistani, and South Asian communities across the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Formerly held in nearby Spanish Fork, it represents the small but thriving Indian American and South Asian American communities of northern Utah.
Art City Days Beginning on the first Saturday in June and continuing through the first full week of June, Springville celebrates with a myriad of activities and events for all ages. Events include the 5K Family Fun Run, Hot Air Balloon Festival, Fireman’s Breakfast, Concerts in the Park, Carnival, Parades, and Fireworks. Most activities are free to the public.Â

World Folkfest Springville is also home to the Springville World Folkfest, a week-long celebration of folk dance and music held every July at the outdoor amphitheater in the Spring Acres Arts Park. Each year folk dance groups travel from around the world to participate in this festival. Folkfest performers are housed by host families in the Springville area. Movies in the Park Movies in the Park are a series of free family movies shown outdoors at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 S. 1300 East on Monday nights during the summer. Admission is free to the public. Gates open at 7 p.m. and movies will start at dusk (about 9 pm).

Heritage Day An old-fashioned birthday party to commemorate Springville becoming a city. Held on a Saturday in mid-September in the center of town, enjoy an afternoon of free entertainment, booths, fun filled family activities and events. Old fashioned fun and birthday cake are all free to the public. Halloween and Christmas Decor Contests Springville residents are invited to nominate yards with amazing holiday decorations during October and December. Nominate your own or a neighbor’s yard by emailing the name and address to the recreation department. Judging takes place a few nights before the holiday. Winners receive an award sign placed in the yard, and the winning addresses will be posted on the city website for the public to know where to find some fantastic decorations. Visits with Santa Come to the Rivoli Theatre, 254 S. Main and visit with jolly ol’ St. Nick on specific dates during December. Each child will receive a candy cane and parents are welcome to take pictures of their children with Santa. There is no fee. Letters to Santa Children are invited to write letters to Santa and hand deliver them to the Springville UPS store (224 South Main) in December. A self-addressed stamped return envelope must be enclosed in order to receive a personal answer from Santa. Drop children’s letters in the “North Pole Express” mailbox outside the store to ensure prompt delivery to Santa. There is no fee.

pringville City operates over 400 acres of parks and campgrounds in Hobble Creek Canyon. The parks include Jolley’s Ranch, Kelly’s Grove, and Rotary Park. The areas are located just past Hobble Creek Golf Course on both forks of Hobble Creek Canyon Road. The Canyon Parks offer picnicking, camping, pavilion rentals, and winter recreation opportunities.
Pavilion Rentals We have 10 pavilions of various sizes available to rent in our Canyon Parks. The pavilions may be rented for family gatherings, company parties, church activities, weddings, and other events. All of our pavilions are fee areas. Use of our pavilions is by paid reservation only. Rental rates depend on pavilion size and length of the reservation. Pavilions open April-September. Campground Jolley’s Ranch has a campground with 57 campsites. The campsites are of various sizes and can accommodate RV and/or tent camping. All campsites have water and most have electricity hookups and there are restrooms (flush toilets) on site. There are no showers or sewage facilities available. The campground is not included with a pavilion rental. Campground open April-October Picnic Sites and Common Areas Our Canyon Parks have several picnic sites and common areas

that are available for all to use, free of charge. However, these areas do not include pavilion areas or campsites. Jolley’s Ranch has the Bear’s Picnic Area which is dedicated to picnicking. Kelly’s Grove also has the new Knight Picnic Area. All picnic areas and common areas are for day use and may be used until it is dark. Jolley’s Ranch Winter Recreation During the winter season at Jolley’s Ranch, you can enjoy the beauty and fun of winter sports without having to go to a big resort. You will find nearly five miles of groomed trails for crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing, a tubing and sledding hill, and parking areas for snowmobilers. Ski and snowshoe equipment is available for rent, along with tubes for the tubing hill. There are heated restrooms and a warming shelter. Season passes and group discounts are available.

Hobble Creek Parkway Trail Enjoy the beauty of Hobble Creek Canyon as a pedestrian or cyclist on the Hobble Creek Parkway Trail. There is approximately two miles of trail in the canyon which continues into and through the city of Springville. Driving Directions to Hobble Creek Canyon Parks From I-15, take Springville exit 260 and turn east. Travel east until you reach the intersection of 1300 East/Canyon Road (four-way stop). Turn south (right) onto Canyon Road and remain on Canyon Road for approximately 4 miles. The Canyon Parks begin with Kelly’s Grove, just beyond the Hobble Creek Golf Course.
