SHOP LOCAL Spring Creek Mechanical Spring Creek Mechanical is a local full-service heating, ventilation and air conditioning company owned and operated by Brent and Sara Harvey of Springville.

Servicing and installing heating and air conditioning equipment is a Harvey family tradition. When Brent Harvey was just 10 years old his dad, Don, started taking him along on heating and air conditioning calls. Brent continued the tradition with his own 6 children and now with his grandchildren, taking them out on calls as soon as they are old enough to hold a flashlight.

The majority of their business is providing residential heating and cooling services including: furnaces, air conditioners, ductless splits, humidifiers, whole home air cleaners, thermostats, water heaters and boilers.

Brent is a licensed HVAC contractor, journeyman plumber, boiler expert and indoor air quality specialist.

Son, Benjamin is such an amazing HVAC service technician they call him The Furnace Whisperer. Son, Adam is a project manager for HVAC and controls for installation of gun ranges. Son, Joseph manages the duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, and is the lead controls installer for the company. Daughter, Suzanne is the company’s bookkeeper.

Brent became interested in indoor air quality when his oldest son, Benjamin, started having severe allergies affecting his respiratory system. Being in the heating and air conditioning trade, Brent knew he could purify and condition the air in his home to help relieve Benjamin’s symptoms. Two of his other sons have had trouble breathing because of allergies also. Brent has made it his

life mission to be an expert in indoor air quality solutions.

Indoor air quality is such an important part of Spring Creek Mechanical that Clean, Comfortable Air is their motto.

Brent’s parents, Don and Jean Harvey moved to Springville in 1980. Brent and Sara raised their children in Springville and love being a part of the community. They also enjoy providing services in Utah County through technical theater and live events. They served for a number of years on the Springville-based Villa Institute for Performing Arts board. They are currently serving on the Board for Avonlea Theater Company, based out of Utah County. Brent and Sara Harvey were recipients of the Director’s award from the Springville/Mapleton Chamber of Commerce for volunteering in 2019. Sara was recently elected to serve as a board member for the Springville/Mapleton Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Executive Director’s Message I love our local business community, and it’s such a privilege to work with the members of our Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce. Our membership has almost quadrupled during the last six years, and it continues to grow each month.

The quarterly Chamber Lunch Meetings are well attended and we’ve heard from speakers such as Matt Packard from Central Bank, Mayor Rick Child, Kirk Holt and Erik Busath from Holt CPA, Chief Craig Martinez from the Springville Police Department and Joel Racker from Explore Utah, to name a few. Our lunch meetings are fun, informative and a great way to meet other business owners and network with them.

We also host our summer family BBQ networking event every August at Jolley’s Ranch. This was started

by Luis Muzquiz, our past president, and it has grown every year.

Everyone loves it and we all enjoy being in our beautiful Hobble Creek Canyon.

One of the most popular chamber events is the Scholarship & Charity Golf Tournament. We have been able to raise money for graduating seniors in Springville and Mapleton, and I’ve personally presented $18,000 in chamber scholarship money during the last five years.

We will grant more scholarships in May. Our plan is to also give money to some local charities this year.

The Safe Halloween is my favorite event. Last year, we promoted our businesses by hosting this ever-growing event and handing out candy to about 2,500 kids. It’s so much fun! Businesses along Main Street between Center Street and 400 South hand out candy each year, but businesses from other areas of the city participate as well.

As a small business owner here in Springville, I have seen the benefit of my chamber membership on our family flooring business. It’s been a privilege to work with this chamber during the last six and a half years.

I will be retiring from my position as executive director in December, but I can honestly say that this has been the best work experience of my life. I’ve made so many new friends and learned so much about business from all of our wonderful members. Our members care about Springville, and our hope is that our citizens will support them by remembering to SHOP LOCAL! It makes a difference.

2020 Business of the Year Magleby’s Magleby’s restaurant, which opened its location inside the historic Reynolds Building in downtown Springville nine years ago, has been named the 2020 Business of the Year by the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s been absolutely fantastic. We really feel like we have a home here,” said Magleby’s owner Richard Parkinson.

Richard’s father David “Doc” Parkinson worked as a dentist for 25 years in Maryland before he retired and he and his wife Lenora moved to Utah. Doc had a dream to share truly great food with the world, and he opened Magleby’s in Provo in 1980 with his best friend Hal Magleby.

The restaurant became an iconic landmark in Provo over the years with well-known menu items such as its breadsticks and chocolate cake. The recipes came from Richard’s mother Lenora.

“Everybody thought my dad ran the restaurant. He didn’t. My mom ran the restaurant,” Richard said.

The restaurant opened while Richard was on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When he returned home, Richard went to work at the

restaurant doing whatever needed to be done. Eventually, he went to work for Marriott, gaining extensive restaurant experience while serving as director of restaurants for the corporation and also owning his own management consultant company.

Richard returned to Provo in 1998 and opened Magleby’s Fresh, which offered similar menu choices in a more casual atmosphere. “That was my concept, the one that I kind of developed and built,” he said. He took over the Magleby’s restaurant in 2004 when his parents wanted to retire.

The decision to locate in Springville came after Leslie DeeAnn Mower, who owns the Reynolds building on the corner of 200 South and Main Street, invited Magleby’s to locate in the building.

“We wouldn’t be here without her,” Richard said.

“She was just a landlord that had vision and knew the growth would come.”

And the growth has come; Richard said the restaurant has “increased and grown every year” since its opening.

“We feel like as long as we do a good job and are a good value, we will grow every year,” he said.

2020 Business of the Year During the economic downturn in 2007 and 2008, Magleby’s made the decision to begin catering events.

The restaurant now caters close to 300 weddings a year as well as corporate and other events.

Magleby’s frequently contributes to local organizations such as schools and foundations through food donations or discounts.

“We just feel like it’s our responsibility to be part of the community, and what we have to offer is food,” Richard said.

The restaurant also buys its ingredients locally when it can to support other local businesses.

2020 Chamber President’s Award Nance Family Dental

Dr. David Nance was born in Springville, the heart of Red Devil Country. When Dr. Nance was a young boy, he accompanied his father, Dr. James Nance, on many house calls. He learned from those experiences that he wanted to help others the way his father did.

Dr. Nance graduated from Springville High School and Brigham Young University and ultimately received his dental degree from Creighton University in Nebraska. He started his practice in 1986 in the basement of the Mt. View Plaza located next to the old Springville Junior High School.

A short time later, he moved his practice to 400 South where he is currently practicing today.

He married his high school sweetheart, Stacy Felix, whose love for Springville runs just as deep.

Together, they raised five children — one son and four daughters — and

all graduated from Springville High School.

All five of their children have worked at one time or another in the dental office. All four daughters became dental hygienists and their son is now a dentist in the office, making it truly Nance Family Dental.

The Nances’ son Eric grew up assisting his dad on many weekend and emergency visits. Eric loved working with his dad, and that soon became his ultimate goal. Eric is married to Heather Keith and they have three little girls. Eric went to dental school here in Utah and practiced in Ketchikan, Alaska, before joining his dad in 2016.

The Nances’ love for Disney has rubbed off on their practice, so if you ever have the chance to visit Nance Family Dental, be sure to keep an eye out for hidden Mickeys.

2020 Chamber Director’s Award Erik Busath Erik Busath was raised in Orem.

He attended Orem High School where he was an important member of the track and cross country teams. He graduated from Orem High in 1995.

After high school, Busath served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in West Virginia. In 2002, he graduated from Utah Valley University with a bachelor’s of science degree in accounting.

Busath began working for Holt CPA in November of 2008 and quickly distinguished himself as a reliable, friendly, approachable and

competent member of the team. He has successfully refined his tax and accounting skills and is a trusted advisor for many clients.

His attainment of Enrolled Agent status allows him to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service.

Ever willing to serve and assist in any capacity, Busath has served as treasurer for the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce since 2012.

In his most important role, he is a hardworking, loving and attentive father of four children: Emma, Ashlyn, Austin and Jake.

Chamber Events Safe Halloween The Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce’s Safe Halloween began as a small event offering a safe trick-or-treating alternative for local children and a way to promote downtown businesses. Over the years, however, attendance at the annual event has exploded, and many businesses from outside the downtown area now participate.

“The first year, there were about 300 kids. Then it was about 800 kids,” said Craig Conover, a member of the chamber’s board of directors and one of the founders of the Safe Halloween event. “Now it’s like 3,000 kids that go down trick-or-treating at all the businesses.”

Each year, during the afternoon of Halloween Day, thousands of costumed children and their parents crowd onto the sidewalks along Springville’s Main Street between 400 South and Center Street for Safe Halloween. So many people participate that it became necessary to have all the traffic flow in a counter-clockwise fashion to keep everything moving. Now, participants travel around in one long line like a festive Halloween parade.

Conover said the event was originally envisioned as a safe event for children to enjoy on Halloween and a way to attract people into the downtown area and familiarize them with downtown businesses. As the event grew, however, the chamber began inviting any of its members, regardless of their location, to participate by setting up a booth in the Civic Center Park and handing out treats.

Springville City also participates, with city officials handing out candy to the children from their own booth in the park.

“It’s a good way for the kids to get out in the afternoon while it’s still warm,” Conover said, and businesses can showcase their products and services for the parents. The only cost for businesses to participate is purchasing the candy they distribute.

“It’s a good way to get your name out,” Conover said.

The Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to its fifth annual Quarterly Networking Family BBQ this summer.

This year’s event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. and is open to all chamber members and their families. It will be held at the large pavilion at Jolley’s Ranch with the menu including grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and all the side dishes required to make it a great meal.

This event was created to provide chamber members with an opportunity to get to know each other and their families better and have an opportunity to network in a more relaxed environment than the typical lunch meeting with a guest speaker.

Chamber Events Scholarship & Charity Golf Tournament Each September, members of the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce enjoy a round of golf in the beautiful fall setting of Hobble Creek Canyon while raising money for local students to attend college and other community needs.

This year’s Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce Scholarship & Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, Sept. 21, at Hobble Creek Golf Course.

The chamber has been hosting this annual golf tournament since the early 2000s, and it has become a popular chamber event.

Businesses sponsor their own four-member team; up to 36 teams can participate. Businesses can also sponsor specific holes on the course and donate items for the event’s prize drawing.

The tournament is “best ball,” meaning the best stroke of the foursome is the one that counts on the score. As another way to raise money, the chamber offers licorice ropes for sale that are three feet long; players that come up just short of the hole can cut the difference off their licorice rope, eat it and consider the ball sunk.

Reams Springville Market provides a steak and shrimp lunch for golfers to enjoy and Pepsi Cola of Springville provides drinks for the tournament.

Proceeds from the tournament fund college scholarships for local students, and all high school students living in Springville and Mapleton are eligible to apply.

In choosing the scholarship recipients, the chamber is seeking students who have been involved in business in some fashion or are planning to go into a business-related field.

The chamber raises enough money each year through the golf tournament to give out from four to six $1,000 scholarships. Local charities are also supported through the tournament’s proceeds. For information about applying for a scholarship, call the chamber at 801-491-7830.

Chamber Events Business BINGO

At the end of the school year in May, the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce will again offer a chance for local elementary school students to win great prizes and have fun in the process as part of its Business BINGO program.

Business BINGO cards will be handed out to elementary school-aged children in Springville and Mapleton during the last week of the school year. On the card will be a grid with the names of various local businesses. The students and their families are invited to visit those businesses and get a sticker or stamp indicating they have visited the business.

Once the student reaches “blackout,” or has all the boxes filled, he or she should turn in the card at the Service Desk on the main floor of the Springville Civic Center, 110 S. Main. Students will also be able to turn in their cards at the chamber’s Art City Days booth, which will be set up in Civic Center Park June 11-13 during Art City Days.

Students will have until 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, to turn in their cards. All those who have submitted their cards by then will be entered into a drawing for prizes, which will be held at the chamber’s Art City Days booth shortly after 1 p.m. on June 13. Past prizes have included bicycles, prize baskets and gift cards.

Shirlene Jordan, the chamber’s executive director, said she was looking for a way to encourage residents to explore the various businesses available in their community when she came up with the idea for Business BINGO. This will be the fourth year the chamber has offered

Business BINGO and Jordan said there’s been a lot of participation.

“It kind of got the kids up and off the couch and they were out looking at the businesses,” Jordan said. “And while they are doing that, they are doing this fun game with a chance to win a really fun prize.”

The game has been great for the participating businesses as well.

“I’ve had so many parents saying they had no idea that this business was here or that business was there,” Jordan said. A dentist’s office reported that one woman came in with her children to play Business Bingo and made appointments for all of them before she left.

Some of the businesses even gave out prizes to the visiting children.

This year, businesses that are chamber members can participate in Business BINGO by paying only $100 to get their name on the BINGO card. Historical Business Snelson PhotoColor Lab In April of 1973, a devastating fire on Springville’s Main Street destroyed several businesses, including a photography studio. That event, however, led to the formation of what has become one of Springville’s iconic businesses.

Snelson PhotoColor Lab was started by Ralph Snelson, a former Springville Junior High School math teacher who would head to Castleton’s Photo in downtown Springville after school to help develop and process the photos taken by owner Vernon Castleton.

“He started when color processing first hit back in the ’60s or so, and just kind of helped Castleton get into the color part of it,” said Mike Snelson, current president of Snelson PhotoColor Lab. When the fire destroyed Castleton’s business, the two men decided to take the work home. Both lived in the Brookside subdivision, and they agreed that Castleton would set up a photography studio in his basement while Snelson would create a dark room in his basement for processing Castleton’s work.

Eventually, Ralph Snelson decided he could take on more work and contacted a few other local photographers. Word got out, more photographers began bringing him business, and the photo lab got bigger. In

the late 1970s, when Snelson and his wife moved to a new house in northeastern Springville, they moved the lab to the basement of an office building at 500 South and Main Street.

The business kept growing, eventually filling the office building’s entire basement. In the early 1980s, Ralph Snelson and Larry Sanford teamed up to construct a new building at 80 W. Center, and in 1984, Snelson PhotoColor Lab moved into the basement of the new building, where it continues to operate today.

Sanford ran a reception center business on the main floor.

By 1991, the photo lab had again outgrown its basement; it then bought out Sanford and took over the entire building. Mike Snelson, who had worked at the photo lab since returning from his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975, began managing the lab in 1991.

Business continued to boom. Mike Snelson said the business’s highest volume sales years were 1999 and 2000. At one point, when the lab was processing an enormous amount of film, it had 36 employees.

However, a new technology had appeared, one that would eventually drive many photo labs out of business. “2000 is when digital photography kind of started to rear its head,” Mike Snelson said.

Historical Business Fortunately, the Snelsons had seen the change coming several years earlier and had begun to adapt. Mike Snelson said in the early 1990s, they heard about a Salt Lake City company with a new machine that did digital photo retouching. They went to see it.

“At that point, we knew we had to do something about getting into digital or we would be going out of business,” Mike Snelson said.

Snelson PhotoColor Lab began transitioning into digital photography technology, buying computers and bringing on digital artists. As the years went by, the business kept investing in new pieces of equipment to stay on the cutting edge of technology.

“Meanwhile, mom-and-pop shops like us were going out of business left and right,” Mike Snelson said. The new equipment was expensive and many couldn’t afford it or weren’t able to keep up with the trends.

Even today, with people seemingly taking more pictures than ever with their phones, the photo lab business is a struggle.

“The digital photography thing has been hard on every photo lab everywhere,” Mike Snelson said. “It’s really been tough, and it’s getting tougher, because when people take pictures anymore, they don’t print. … A lot of people don’t even think about printing until they want something on their wall. So the challenge

for us as a printing facility is to convince people that they need to get prints.”

Today, Snelson PhotoColor Lab remains a full-service, professional photo lab that provides high-quality photo printing. Its staff is much smaller now, but it offers many more services including scanning and archiving services for negatives and slides, converting movies and audio tapes to a digital format and photo restoration services.

It also offers metal prints and art reproductions called giclee prints. The giclee process involves digitizing an original piece of art, then printing it on a canvas, with the result resembling an actual painting.

While other businesses offer giclee prints, Snelson PhotoColor Lab creates its giclee prints using certified archival canvas. It costs more, but the end result is much higher quality and lasts longer. The lab also uses the highest-quality archival media available including Fuji Crystal Archive paper, fine art paper and other professional grade photo media.

“Our philosophy has always been to personalize the service to the customer and provide the highest-quality product available,” Mike Snelson said.

Historical Business Wheeler Mortuary For more than 130 years, Wheeler Mortuary in Springville has been helping local residents through the worst time of their lives — the death of a loved one.

“We have always prided ourselves in giving individual and personalized service to every family that we are privileged to serve,” said Wheeler Mortuary owner Paul Wheeler.

Wheeler Mortuary was established in 1888 by Paul’s great-grandfather Walter Wheeler after an accident left Walter unable to continue in his job as a stone mason.

Walter was a friend of William Henry Taylor, a mortician in the Salt Lake Valley who was also a polygamist.

Taylor continued practicing polygamy after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the Manifesto ending plural marriage in the church. When federal government officials came looking for Taylor, he went to Springville and Walter Wheeler hid him in a hollowed-out haystack until the heat was off.

“He told him, ‘Walter, you have a very kind and loving disposition. You would make a good undertaker.

If you ever have the need, you may come to Salt Lake City and I will teach you the trade,’” Paul Wheeler said.

Walter found himself in need of a new trade af-

ter a large rock fell on him and injured him while he was working on the foundation for Springville’s train station. He went to Salt Lake City, spent two weeks training with Taylor, then returned and opened Wheeler Mortuary in his barn at 500 East and 100 North in Springville.

Walter died in 1921, but his son A.Y. Wheeler had been working in the profession with him and kept the business going. At some point, the funeral home was moved from Walter’s barn to a building at 350 E. 100 North, where it operated until 1940 when it was moved to a home at 211 E. 200 South. A large addition was built onto the home, and the mortuary is still located there today.

Historical Business Blaine Wheeler — A.Y.’s son — joined the business in 1939. Blaine was drafted into World War II; after returning home, Blaine continued working at the mortuary until he took over the business when his father died in 1957.

The mortuary’s location also served as the Wheeler family’s residence, and Blaine’s son Paul Wheeler grew up there. Paul’s interest in the business began at age 5 when his mother allowed him to assist her with cosmetic work on the dead. His official work for Wheelers Mortuary started at age 10 when he began mowing and watering the lawn, weeding the rose garden and answering the telephone.

At the age of 16, Paul began helping his father transport those who had died to the mortuary, and at age 18, he began assisting with funeral services.

Paul went on to graduate from Cypress College in California, graduating in 1980 in mortuary science. In 1986, he and his wife Vicki purchased the mortuary from Paul’s parents and have been operating it ever since.

The business and Paul and Vicki’s family grew, and in 1996, Paul and Vicki moved into their own separate home and the mortuary’s operations expanded to fill the entire building at 211 E. 200 North.

It was 100 years after the founding of Wheeler Mortuary when its first full-time, non-family-member employee was hired in 1988. In 2003, Wheeler Mortuary built its branch in Mapleton, and in 2016, the business purchased Sundburg-Olpin Mortuary in Orem (which still operates under that name).

Wheeler Mortuary now employs six full-time funeral directors, three funeral assistants and four secretaries.

Paul’s son was licensed as a funeral director in 2012 and is currently working in the business.

“I’ve always had a passion for serving others,” said Paul, who served as a volunteer firefighter in Springville for 36 years, retiring in 2012. “We’ve always felt Springville is our home and love serving the Springville-Mapleton area.”

Historical Business Day-Nite Laundromat Early every morning, Pat Monney would stand at the bottom of the staircase in his family’s home and shake the keys to the laundromat next door, letting his children sleeping upstairs know it was time to get up and get to work.

Cleaning the Day-Nite Laundromat at 72 N. Main was a job all five Monney children participated in as soon as they were old enough to help. Their tasks included wiping off tables, removing lint from the dryers and sweeping and mopping floors.

It’s work their grandmother, their parents and now their own children have also participated in during the 50 years the laundromat has been run by the Monney family.

“Keeping this business in the family over the past four generations has produced a legacy of excellent work ethic instilled in each of us,” said Debbie Huntsman, one of the five Monney children.

Their parents, Pat and Wyma Monney, were living in Victoria, Texas, when Pat’s father died in 1967. In 1969, Pat’s mother, Olive May Monney, decided she wanted to move to Utah where her youngest son would enroll at Brigham Young University.

Pat and Wyma accompanied her on a trip to Provo,

where Olive found a small laundromat near BYU and agreed to buy it from the owner. The three returned to Texas to prepare Olive for the move.

Pat and Wyma had also been considering moving to Utah and even listed their home for sale, but it had sat on the market for a year. Right after they returned home from Provo, their home sold, and they made the move with Olive and their three small children.

After arriving in Utah, however, the laundromat owner decided not to sell his business. Olive purchased a house on Springville’s Main Street and Pat and Wyma

Historical Business rented an apartment — also on Main Street.

Before long, Olive noticed the nearby Day-Nite Laundromat. It was neglected and only had 13 machines. On inquiring about the business, Olive learned the owner’s daughter was taking care of the laundromat while he cared for his wife, whom he had moved to Arizona due to her poor health.

While traveling back and forth to Arizona from Utah, the Day-Nite owner was in an accident, and the daughter let the Monneys know he was ready to sell the business.

Olive, Pat and Wyma agreed to buy it, but there was a catch — the house next door came with the business.

They made the purchase in 1969, and with Olive already owning a home, Pat and Wyma moved into the house next to the laundromat. It was there they raised their children — they had two more while living there — and they remain there to this day.

Over time, they made improvements to the laundromat and added more machines. Pat, an electrician by trade, did the maintenance work while Wyma took care of the bookkeeping.

Olive was a constant presence at the laundromat, spending about eight hours a day there giving change and keeping the place orderly.

“It was part of our daily routine as kids to go to the laundromat on our way to and from school and visit

with our grandmother,” said Patrick Monney, son of Pat and Wyma. “She would read to us, spend hours talking with us and always gave the best hugs. Later we found out that she was a great help to many of our customers who would come and visit while their clothes were washing and drying.”

In 1981, Olive decided it was time for Pat and Wyma to buy her share of the business, which they did.

“It’s just been enjoyable to watch the laundromat, the changes in it” over the years, Wyma said. When the Monneys first moved to Springville, many people in Mapleton didn’t have the plumbing system necessary for washing machines and did their laundry at Day-Nite.

“We just met so many wonderful people from Mapleton. They were regulars,” Wyma said.

Today, people from “everywhere” utilize the laundromat, from locals to people passing through on vacation. Wyma attributed their loyal customers to her family’s emphasis on keeping the facility clean.

“One guy that’s been coming three or four weeks now, he said, ‘This is the cleanest place I’ve ever been in,’” Wyma said. “And he comes from Salt Lake.”

And while the Monneys aren’t sure what the future holds for the laundromat, for now, they’ll keep helping others get their laundry clean while their grandkids help carry on the family tradition.

Springville City Mayor’s Message Springville City is one of the many communities in Utah County that is feeling the impacts associated with rapidly growing commercial and residential developments.

While growth is exciting and welcomed by many, it is also viewed by some as an end to the small town heritage of our past.

As Springville continues to grow, it is my hope that we can continue to attract great businesses that will enhance our city and make our town a place where people enjoy spending time with their families and friends. By creating a community where people enjoy getting out and visiting the great places our city has to offer, we will be better able to maintain that great hometown feel that our residents have grown to love.

Besides our growing business sector, Springville City also has many wonderful venues available to our residents. The Clyde Recreation Center has been a great success since its opening a couple of years ago. Along with its great pools, the rec center has offered many different classes and athletic programs that have been very popular.

In addition to the rec center, the city also repurposed the old pool building into a field house that has proven to be a great facility for our

many youth sport programs, particularly during the winter months.

Springville City is home to many amazing parks that feature great pavilions, playgrounds and fields for many different sports. Probably the most notable of these parks is the Wayne Bartholomew Family Park located at the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon. This venue is a great place to enjoy sitting on a sandy beach while you watch your kids play in the water. You can even throw in a fishing line if you would like.

Farther up the canyon, you will find the award-winning Hobble Creek Golf Course where the canyon setting provides a golf experience that is unsurpassed. Also in the canyon, there are several fantastic campgrounds, including Cherry Campground, Balsam Campground and Jolley’s Ranch, which feature many spots for prolonged camping trips. For short day visits, you can also visit Jolley’s Ranch or Kelly’s Grove.

Springville has been greatly blessed by having such a great chamber of commerce. The Springville-Mapleton chamber has been led for many years by Shirlene Jordan, who has done a tremendous job growing support for businesses in our community and making the chamber a valuable asset to both

our city and our many business members. Shirlene has recently announced that she will be retiring from her position to spend more time with her family. I would like to thank her for the amazing service that she has provided for our community.

I’m excited for all of the great things we have going on in our city, and I want to conclude by mentioning that our greatest assets are the citizens and the support that they give to our community and our businesses. Springville City Events & Activities SPRING SALON EXHIBIT

The Spring Salon was first held in 1922. It was started by students and teachers at Springville High School who wanted to exhibit and promote original artwork.

The Salon has been held annually since that time except during World War II, when fuel and other goods were rationed nationwide. The Springville Museum of Art continues the tradition today. This exhibition is a juried competition that showcases the diversity and quality of contemporary Utah art.

Miss Springville/Mapleton 2019: Kaylie Jill Ross Kaylie Jill Ross is the daughter of Brad and Candice Ross. She is the second oldest of four girls. They love going to Lake Powell, going to the movies, and, of course. shopping! She has lived in Springville for the past 16 years. Her favorite spot in Springville is La Casita, and a close second is Hobble Creek Canyon.

Ross graduated from high school in 2017 with high honors and also received an Academic All-State award. She was a member of two honor choirs and was cheer captain her senior year. Currently, she is a junior attending Utah Valley University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in school health education.

During the past year, she has had an amazing time serving her community, making new friends and getting to know more about her two beautiful cities. Some of the highlights of her year include riding

in a hot-air balloon, singing the national anthem at multiple events and talking to classes in Springville and Mapleton.

Ross is an advocate for her Social Impact Initiative “Healthy Media, Healthy Mind.” With that initiative, she has started a movement, #outsmartyoursmartphone, where she presents the negative impact social media can have on an individual’s mental health and easy ways to overcome it.

Ross has created four simple steps for healthy media usage: 1. Down time 2. Talk time 3. Movement time 4. Creative time She has grown a deep love for spreading her Social Impact Initiative. She loves hearing students’ experiences with social media and the ways they have been affected.

Ross believes social media can be a

positive tool in everyday life if people don’t let it control their lives.

By Lana Hiskey Natalie Egbert Clyde was born in West Jordan to Gary and Janice Egbert. She was raised in West Jordan on her family’s mink ranch on Redwood Road. She graduated from Bingham High School where she participated on the drill team and was the Business Sterling Scholar.

She then attended Brigham Young University where she met Wilford W. Clyde. Natalie and Wilford married in 1977 and have lived in Springville since then. Natalie graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in interior design.

While raising four daughters (Camille, Melia, Alison and Katie), Natalie found time to volunteer in the community. She helped with the Art City Days Children’s Art Festival for many years. Her daughters remember being “volunteered” to paint

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Natalie has spent many years serving in various church callings, but most of her time has been spent with the youth. She has attended girls’ camps, hosted events in her home and organizing countless other activities.

It is difficult to quantify all the service Natalie has contributed over the years. She is often behind the scenes, quietly taking care of things most people are not aware of. As one friend said, “If she can’t help you, she knows someone who can.”

At the 2020 Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce banquet, Lana Hiskey presented the Citizen of the Year Award to Natalie. At the time, Lana said, “What truly makes Natalie the 2020 Citizen of the Year is the way she serves quietly behind the scenes when no one is watching. Natalie is always helping someone that is down on their luck or having an urgent health issue.

“I have been astonished at her ability to recognize a need and then pull together the needed resources from various resources to help the individual. Her service is almost always anonymous.

“It takes a special person, Natalie, to allow her husband, Wilford, to serve in so many leadership capacities. While Wilford is leading the community and the many Clyde Companies, Natalie is the one taking care of everything else (including important details for Wilford).

“Natalie was the first person to offer her home to evacuees from the Bald Mountain and Pole Creek Fires.

Little did anyone know that her house guests would be there for three solid weeks. Natalie is an inspiration to all of us on how to be a contributing citizen of our community and chamber. There is not a person in Springville that deserves Citizen of the Year for 2020 more than Natalie Clyde.”

In addition to serving in the community, Natalie enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with her 18 grandchildren. Natalie and Wilford continue to enjoy supporting the Springville/Mapleton community and are passionate about making Springville a great place to live.

Public Safety New chief looking to involve community in police work Springville Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Craig Martinez spent nearly 19 years as part of the Orem Police Department, and while he misses the people and relationships he enjoyed there, he has never regretted his decision to come to the Art City.

“The officers that I get to work with down here, they’re top notch, they’re great, they’re young, they’re energetic, they’ve got a lot of great ideas,” Martinez said. “Also, the city, from the mayor and city council to the city administration, they’re fantastic to work for.”

Martinez took over the position in the spring of 2019 after the retirement of Chief J.Scott Finalyson, who led the Springville Police Department for more than 23 years.

Born in Florida, Martinez moved to Utah when he was 2 and grew up in Spanish Fork, graduating from Spanish Fork High School in 1993. He met his wife Shantelle while they were in junior high school.

After high school, Martinez joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Following boot camp, he and Shantelle were married and he was stationed in Twentynine Palms, California. During the first four years of their marriage, he was deployed abroad for about three of them.

He left the Marine Corps in October 1997 and entered the police academy at Utah Valley University a week later. The inspiration to become a police officer came from his father, he said, who worked with the U.S. Border Patrol in Texas.

Following graduation from the police academy, Martinez worked for the Utah Highway Patrol for two years. In July of 2000, he was hired by the Orem Police Department.

Martinez has served in a variety of capacities at Orem PD, including as a patrol officer, as a member of the metro SWAT team, as an undercover narcotics officer and as a fraud investigator. Eventually, he became

the department’s public information officer.

It was while Martinez was in the PIO position that he began utilizing the new tool known as “social media” to help his department solve crimes. He was put in charge of community outreach and social media, and he decided to start a police blog. Shortly after his blog began, Facebook began rising in popularity, and Orem PD was one of the first police departments in the county to become part of it.

Martinez said he really wanted to use social media as a way for the public to help police do their job. At first, his coworkers were reluctant to use the tool. Then a man who had committed armed robbery at several locations in the county struck again — and police had video.

Martinez got the go ahead to post the video. “Literally within an hour, we had him identified, and we had him in custody the next morning,” Martinez said.

He started doing Tattletale Tuesdays — Facebook posts that included a photo, general facts about a case and a request for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.

“That program, to this day, has about a 90 percent success rate,” Martinez said.

Since coming to Springville, Martinez has posted humorous police reports about SVPD’s activities on the department’s Facebook page as he has time. “I’m kind of letting folks into who I am,” he said. “I love to have fun, I love to joke, I love to play pranks. … In a profession like this, if you don’t, it’s going to really take a toll on you.”

In early 2019, Martinez attended the FBI National Academy, a prestigious 10-week program that attracts law enforcement administrators from around the world. He then returned to Orem PD, but when the Springville police chief position came up, he decided to apply.

“(Springville) was the perfect situation for me,” Martinez said. “I looked into the city, the city council, the city administrator, before even applying, and realizing what a great job they were doing, it just seemed to fit for me and my family at the time.”

The Springville Police Department is doing well, he said, and he is looking at adding more opportunities for community volunteerism within the department. Specifically, Martinez is considering creating a Volunteers In Police Service program, which would bring in and train volunteers to provide non-hazardous services such as unlocking car doors, directing traffic at accident scenes and assisting with parking enforcement.

He is also looking at creating an Honorary Colonels Committee, which would bring in community residents and involve them in some department decisions.

As public safety director, the fire department is under his jurisdiction, and he said the city is considering finishing the upstairs living quarters in the downtown fire department building, which were left unfinished when the building was constructed.

Martinez expressed thanks to Shantelle, his wife of 26 years. “I literally couldn’t do this without her and the support of my three kids,” he said.

Community Development Development Director: Springville headed in the right direction Springville City has made good planning decisions in recent decades that are paying off, and new Springville City Community Development Director Josh Yost wants to see that trend continue at the city moves forward into the future.

“We’ve made good decisions on a couple of key things over the past 20 years, especially in the West Fields in the way that we’ve regulated the housing development out there, that will serve us well in the long term,” Yost said.

Yost began working as community development director for Springville City in August of 2019 after spending time working for Provo as a city planner.

Originally from Murray, Yost obtained a bachelor’s degree in city planning at the University of Utah and graduated from Cornell University with a master’s degree in city and regional planning.

He began his career in Murray, working in the city’s economic development department, then went on to work at UTA as a strategic planner. He and his family moved to Springville in 2016.

Yost praised the planning and subsequent development of Springville’s West Fields area.

he said. “They put regulations in place to make sure the streets were connected well and the blocks were small and provided for a variety of housing.”

The city also made good decisions as it chose to invest in the historic downtown area with new civic facilities, Yost said, adding he feels these efforts have strengthened the area.

Some may be against any change in the downtown area, while others may be in favor of major change like high-rise buildings, but the key will be finding the middle ground.

“Finding a balance between extremes in this central area, I think, will be really important in making sure that it gets more vibrant and more economically sustainable in the long term, and that we can sustain businesses down here,” Yost said.

Yost said he expects residents will see 1200 West be extended north from 400 South to Center Street within the next few years. Eventually, the road will go north all the way to Community Park.

The future will also bring transportation issues. Yost said Springville City is working with other southern Utah County municipalities as well as UTA and the Mountainland Association of Governments to prepare to conduct the South Valley Transit Study. This study

Community Development will analyze and recommend new and improved transit facilities in south county, including the potential extension of FrontRunner commuter rail.

Preliminary work is underway, and the study should begin within the next few months. “We have been planning for years under the assumption that we would have a station here in Springville to the west of Smith’s and the rec center,” Yost said.

Currently, the city’s number one priority is the block of property at 400 S. Main where Allen’s grocery store used to be located.

City staff members are working through developing zoning regulations for that property to make sure whatever develops there is best for the city in the long term.

“It’s visually important, it’s economically important, it’s important to the rest of downtown. It could be a real catalyst in increasing the vitality, vibrancy and economic development in downtown,” Yost said.

Overall, Yost said the city is headed in the right direction. “Springville, in my short experience, seems very intentional and very careful and thoughtful,” he said. “It’s just well managed, and the city’s successful because the people living here and the people working for the citizens in the government are doing a really good job.”

Transportation UDOT considering new I-15 interchange in Springville Springville City — and the rest of southern Utah County — has experienced an incredible amount of growth during the past several years, both in residential and commercial construction. All this growth brings traffic congestion, and the Utah Department of Transportation is examining how to ease that problem on Springville’s south side.

UDOT has spent the last several months gathering the initial technical data and public comments on the potential creation of a new I-15 interchange between the 400 South exit in Springville and the US-6/ Main Street exit in Spanish Fork.

The new interchange would be located at a road marking the boundary between the two cities known as 1600 South in Springville and 2700 North in Spanish Fork.

“With the amount of growth that’s taking place in the area, we definitely know there will be a need for some sort of connection and improvements in that area,” said Geoff Dupaix, region communication manager for UDOT’s Region 3.

Creating the interchange would relieve traffic congestion on Springville’s 400 South while also providing an alternative route for traffic trying to access Spanish Fork’s Canyon Creek commercial area. A new Lowe’s recently opened in the Canyon Creek area and Intermountain Healthcare is constructing a new hospital there.

“Those types of developments that are going into the area are going to help create even more demand for some kind of additional access to get to those additional businesses from I-15,” Dupaix said.

The Utah Transportation Commission has provided $2 million to pay for an environmental assessment evaluating the potential impact of constructing the new interchange, an assessment that is currently underway. UDOT held a public meeting in November to obtain comments from residents and has conducted some initial traffic analysis.

In addition to the proposed interchange, UDOT is also examining potential improvements that would need to be made to Springville’s 1600 South to accommodate the increased traffic. Other considerations include what type of interchange configuration would best serve the area, how to best connect into existing roadways and how to cross railroad tracks that intersect with 1600 South.

As part of the environmental study, UDOT will evaluate these alternatives and their associated property, environmental and community impacts. When a few options have been identified, they will be brought back to the public and local governmental agencies for comment.

All this input and information will be used to determine the final design of the project. UDOT’s commissioners have set aside $5 million for land acquisition and $25 million for project construction; this will cover initial improvements, but more improvements will likely be needed in the future, Dupaix said.

Local Arts Lifetime love of the arts led to Brown Art Gallery opening Bill and Marilyn Brown have loved the visual and performing arts all their lives. So, what better way to spend their retirement than running an art gallery?

“We’re the only gallery in the Art City of Springville besides the art museum,” Bill Brown said. “We do it not to make money, but we do it because we love the arts and we love the interaction with people.”

The Browns opened the Brown Art Gallery in 2008 in a historic building at 274 S. Main. The pair have a workspace in the building where they both paint works that are exhibited and offered for sale, but they also commonly have other artists’ works on display and for sale.

“We’ve just got the art bug,” Bill said. “It’s been a lifetime love of the arts for both of us. It’s really blessed our lives.”

Bill is a former Realtor and Marilyn is a writer who recently had her 19th novel published. Together, they owned and operated the Villa Playhouse Theatre at 254 S. Main, Springville, for 10 years. They also ran the Little Brown Theater at 248 S. Main, Springville, for several years.

Between the two theaters, they produced 96 productions — all on a volunteer basis. At one point, the couple owned six buildings in Springville’s downtown area.

attack, and they sold the buildings. However, his health problems led to his interest in painting.

At the time, the Browns owned a home in St. George, and while Bill was recuperating there from his heart attack, Marilyn suggested they attend some art classes at the local senior citizens center. After all, he had spent many hours painting sets.

“And we went, and I started to develop this love of the paintbrush,” Bill said.

Marilyn has painted all her life, having cultivated a love for the art after taking art classes while attending Brigham Young University. “I met some wonderful artists and I just had a wonderful time,” Marilyn said. “It was a wonderful experience and I just learned a lot.”

When they opened the gallery in 2008, the Browns were again living in Springville. They operated it for about five years, then closed the gallery and went back to St. George to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They leased the gallery’s building to someone else.

About a year after returning home from their mission, the Browns’ tenant left the building, and they decided to reopen the gallery. All was well until, one day, while the Browns were attending the wedding of their granddaughter in Millcreek Canyon east of Salt Lake City,

The art gallery was on fire.

“When we got down here, they (the firefighters) were doing their mop up,” Bill said. “It was heartbreaking.”

Fortunately, some of the paintings in the gallery had been removed from the building before the Browns arrived, but Bill estimated about half of the approximately 150 paintings in the gallery at the time were damaged beyond repair.

Old wiring in a wall had arced, causing an explosion in a gas heater. The building was 80 percent destroyed, including three apartments on the second floor, one of which was waiting for the Browns’ granddaughter to move in with her new husband.

A love of historical buildings — and the many memories the buildings held for the Browns — led to the Browns’ decision to repair the damage. The building had been home to Bill’s real estate offices and served as greenroom space for their playhouse.

Even with they insurance money the Browns received, they needed another $100,000 to complete the work needed to repair the building.

“We sold a piece of property in Provo to get the additional money to finish it off,” Bill said. “We took a lemon and made lemonade out of it.”

The interior of the building was completely redone,

the outside cleaned and repainted and the windows replaced.

Today, visitors can view the paintings, along with some pottery and antique furniture the gallery offers for sale, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. During Art City Days in June, the gallery will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bill said he sees the art gallery as a community service. Last summer, the Brown Art Gallery displayed art by local senior citizens during Art City Days, something the gallery intends to repeat this year.

Customer Service Freeway Propane keeping customers’ supply flowing In the late 1980s, many homeowners in Woodland Hills were finding their electric heating systems expensive to operate. Three brothers, plumbing contractors by trade, were being called in to help these residents switch over to more economical propane systems.

As they worked, the homeowners were constantly asking one question: where do we get our propane tanks?

The brothers — Joel, Mark and Chad Brown — saw an opportunity. They got into the propane tank business, then the propane supply business. They named their company Freeway Propane and based it in Springville.

“Pretty soon, they had so many propane customers that it was taking most of their time just to take care of the propane business,” said Rich Maughan, general manager of Freeway Propane and its sister company Freeway Fencing.

By 1997, the Brown brothers were completely out of the plumbing business, and since then Freeway Propane has grown to become a full-service retail propane marketer serving Utah, Juab, Sanpete and Wasatch counties.

“We have the largest propane storage in Utah,” Maughan said. The company has about 200,000 gallons of storage space in Eureka, 300,000 gallons of storage space in Nephi and about a million gallons of storage space at its facility located at 1240 S. 2000 West in Springville.

“We service customers where there’s no natural gas or there’s electricity but it’s too expensive with their needs,” Maughan said.

Locally, the company has a lot of clients in Hobble Creek Canyon and in the Lake Shore and Palmyra areas.

Freeway Propane installs tanks for clients and hooks them up to their houses or businesses. It also has delivery trucks that go out every day to refill tanks for both residential and business clients. It sells only the highest grade of propane.

Many people don’t realize homes can run on propane, Maughan said, adding that anything that runs on natural gas can run on propane, including furnaces, stoves, water heaters and pool heaters.

“Our drivers are busy year-round,” Maughan said.

Service can get difficult during the winter in places like Sundance where there may be multiple feet of snow on the ground, but Freeway Propane drivers will dig their clients tanks out, check them and refill them.

“There’s not a lot of other companies out there that do that,” Maughan said. “We pride ourselves on our customer service. … We really care about our customers and try to make that a priority.”

Freeway Propane assists many businesses as well.

smaller tanks. Freeway Propane keeps those larger tanks full.

For those who want to refill their smaller tanks for barbecue grills, fire pits or anything else that runs on propane, Freeway Propane has a retail dispenser at its Springville location and will fill bottles for clients as they come in.

The business is also certified to work with propane systems in motorhomes or travel trailers. It often has people stop by who are traveling through the area and need repair work. “People come in with problems, and we can help them,” Maughan said.

In Freeway Propane’s early years, business would slow down in the summer. To fill the gap, the Brown brothers started a vinyl fencing business called Freeway Fencing, which is also located at located at 1240 S. 2000 West in Springville. Both businesses grew, and both are now busy throughout the year.

“Anything in vinyl fencing that is on the market today, we offer and we’ll do,” Maughan said.

Freeway Propane goes out of its way to donate to local schools and programs. About nine years ago, the business cut checks for Springville, Spanish Fork and Payson high schools as well as Tintic High School in Eureka, took the donations to the schools and told them to use the money however they saw fit.

Maughan said at the time, no one was stopping by and asking the business for donations, so they decided to “let everybody know that we like to donate to programs and different things.”

Each year, Freeway Propane partners with Springville City to provide propane for the hot-air balloons that fly during Art City Days. It has also donated or provided propane at a reduced rate to community activities such as the Springville Fireman’s Breakfast and Payson’s Salmon Supper.

New Construction Unique building to offer food, movies and fun Rick Salisbury wanted to create something different, something that would bring people to Springville, somewhere they could enjoy time together.

The result is a new building under construction in west Springville named The Compound. Located at 533 S. 1750 West, the three-story structure is situated next to three other landmarks also owned by Salisbury: Legends Motorcycles, the Strap Tank Brewery and the Sidecar Cafe.

“I was trying to create a destination,” Salisbury said, “so between the motorcycles and the brew pub restaurant, I thought, what else could I put over there that would be a draw to have people want to spend three or four hours here?”

The 20,000-square-foot building’s unique look has already attracted attention. While it’s being built using traditional methods, the building is designed to look like it has been pieced together with shipping containers. The outside of the building is being covered with parts from actual shipping containers.

“I just wanted something different. I’m tired of the stucco. I’m tired of the same old strip mall look. And Springville is the Art City,” Salisbury said, adding that the building could be considered an art piece.

“It’s been hard one to build,” he said, “because it’s different and every piece we put up is handmade and custom. You can’t really mass-produce anything that’s going into it.”

The Compound will have a variety of restaurants, including Rusty Nail Pizza, which will offer Italian food such as pizzas, pastas and breads. On the building’s upper level will be The 3rd Floor, a Mexican Margarita Cantina, offering traditional Mexican dishes. A ’50s-style snack bar/cafe will be open for lunch.

There will also be retail area offering custom artwork by local artists as well as a barbershop and a tattoo studio.

A movie theater will be located in part of the building, but it will be much different than the typical multiplex.

Salisbury said he was looking for a more personalized, comfort-oriented movie experience and is creating a theater that will seat only about 50 people. Audience members will enjoy pillows, blankets and waiters bringing food and drinks.

The movie theater will be open to the public and screen first-run movies.

“It’s just something to do, somewhere to go, somewhere to stay in Springville and just have a good time,” Salisbury said. “I don’t think people need to go to Spanish Fork, they don’t need to go to Provo, to have a good time.”

With its small-town charm, its scenic setting framed by Maple Mountain, its access to excellent recreational facilities and programs, and its safe and beautiful neighborhoods, Mapleton is a great place to settle down.

Like most cities in Utah, Mapleton is experiencing significant growth.

Mapleton Citizen of the Year 2020 Mary Fojtek Mary Fojtek is the daughter of Hugh and Erma Mendenhall Hjorth and one of 11 children. She attended Mapleton Elementary School from kindergarten through fifth grade and Sage Creek Elementary School in Springville for sixth grade.

She went on to attend Springville Junior High School and Springville High School and is proud to be a Red Devil. She attended Brigham Young University prior to her marriage.

Mary met her husband Jim Fojtek in Washington, D.C., while he was stationed with the Air Force at Joint Base Andrews-Naval Air Facility Washington. She was spending the summer working with the Peace Corps in its administrative office.

They were married after Jim returned from the Vietnam War. The couple had five children born at four different Air Force bases around the United States. They have lived in

Texas, Illinois, Florida and Colorado.

Jim’s final assignment was at Hill Air Force Base where they spent seven years, and he retired after 22 years of service. They have 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Following the death of Mary’s parents, the Fojteks decided to retire in Mapleton. They purchased the family home from her siblings and remodeled it. It is one of the oldest homes in Mapleton and was built by Mary’s great-grandparents, Richard Lovell and Mariah Houtz Mendenhall. They started building it in 1878 and finished in 1891.

Mary said it is a joy to live in her childhood home. One of the buildings on the property is the first shop her father built when he and his brother Carlos started their business, Hjorth Brothers, in 1946.

Mary has been working on the Mapleton Historical Society Committee for several years and is currently serving as committee chair. A couple of years ago, the society received

approval from the mayor and city council to make some changes at the City Park at the corner of Maple and Main streets, and three buildings are currently being added to the park.

“It has been the opportunity of a lifetime to give back something of value to the place I call home and to learn and remember the sacrifices of those who came before us,” Mary said.

Managing Growth Mapleton updating land use, parks & recreation plans Using data from citizen surveys as well as public meetings and input from an advisory committee, Mapleton City is determining how residents want future growth managed and putting a plan in place to meet those desires.

Last October, the city began the process of updating the Land Use Element of the city’s General Plan as well as creating a Parks, Recreation and Open Space Element for the General Plan.

The city’s General Plan outlines longterm goals for future city development.

The Land Use Element provides a vision for how the city will develop over time and provides a framework for decision makers as they evaluate future development proposals and needs.

The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Element will establish a vision for future city parks, trails and open space systems as well as recreational opportunities.

Mapleton Community Development Director Sean Conroy said the Land Use Element was last updated in 2009. A lot of time has gone by, however, and many people don’t feel a connection to the current plan.

“We really wanted to have a very broad, extensive public outreach to make sure that everybody had the opportunity to provide their insights” and feel ownership in the plan, Conroy said.

The Plan Advisory Committee, made up of local residents, was established to oversee the process. The city also hired Y2 Analytics to conduct a statistically valid survey last fall. This involved sending surveys randomly to residents in the community. When that survey was completed, all residents were invited to take the survey online.

The survey asked questions including what issues residents thought were most important, how they felt about growth in Mapleton and the availability of parks and trails, and where and what type of commercial development they would like to see in the city.

A public workshop was held on Feb. 20 where city officials gathered more input from residents.

Work is now underway to take all the information gathered and use it to draft the new land use and parks elements for the General Plan. It is anticipated that the elements will be considered for approval by the Mapleton City Council in May or June.

in the city’s efforts to gather information. “For us, it’s important that we all work together. Mapleton means a lot to all of us,” Branch said.

Residents may still submit input online on the Mapleton Land Use and Parks and Recreation Update Social Pinpoint page at ourmapleton.org.

Survey results Conroy said one of the highlights of the results of the statistically valid survey was the high average quality of life ranking residents gave the city. “People had an almost 85 out of 100, which our consultant said was the highest they’d ever seen,” he said.

While people feel Mapleton offers a high quality of life, however, there is also concern that growth will erode that quality of life.

Regarding commercial development, respondents preferred to see it occur primarily along Highway 89.

“The top things they wanted were a grocery store and restaurants,” Conroy said.

Other findings included: - More than half of the survey respondents — 54 percent — said they chose to live in Mapleton because of the small-town atmosphere.

- 54 percent said Mapleton is growing “much too quickly,” while 31 percent said Mapleton is growing “a bit too quickly.”

- When asked to rank their priorities for the city’s limited financial resources, respondents’ top priority was street/road maintenance.

New Business The Cookie Cottage opening soon in Mapleton A new two-story, tower-like building located just off Highway 89 in Mapleton may look small to some, but to sweet treats expert Samantha Haney, it’s everything she’d hoped for.

“To me, this is giant. This is my dream come true,” Samantha said.

Haney and her husband Eric purchased the building, located in the Harvest Park development at approximately 750 S. 1600 West, to serve as home for Samantha’s business: The Cookie Cottage. The business will feature Samantha’s cookies, but customers will also be able to purchase brownies, cupcakes, full-sized cakes, sweet breads — pretty much any sweet treat they can think of.

“If it’s baked, I will be offering it,” she said.

The building is awaiting finishing touches and landscaping, but Samantha is hopeful that everything will be ready for her to open for business in April.

“I love to bake. I always have. I’ve been doing it since I was like 3 years old,” Samantha said.

Her mother worked and eventually started her own business while Samantha was growing up, so Samantha spent a lot of time at her grandparents’ house.

New Business Samantha and sharing with her his love of the craft.

As her baking skills increased over the years, people began suggesting she should go into business and sell her creations. However, she didn’t take the suggestions seriously until she volunteered to help make food — including desserts — for a fundraiser for her daughter’s sports team. The food sold in record time.

Samantha and Eric spent 13 years living in Ramona, a small rural town near San Diego, California, and it was while living there that she opened her first sweet treat business. Also called The Cookie Cottage, the business was located in a tiny building built on a median between two gas pumps.

The pumps had been removed, but the building remained.

Samantha had a commercial kitchen in her home where she would bake her cookies and treats before boxing them up and taking them to her business location. One side of the building was for walk-up business, the other for drive-up customers.

“I would literally sell out every single day,” Samantha said. She ran the business for three and a half

years.

The couple moved to Utah when their daughter decided she wanted to attend the University of Utah. The plan was for Samantha to restart her business here, and the Haneys even purchased a building in Holladay.

Things at that location didn’t work out, however, and they began looking for another potential site.

One day, they drove through Mapleton, and they fell in love with the city and its small-town atmosphere.

“We drove around, and then, when we saw this place, we were like, oh my gosh, this is perfect, this is like Ramona,” Samantha said.

They had seen plans for the Harvest Park building — which had not been built yet — in an online listing, but when they made an appointment to see the location and found out exactly where the building would be, “It couldn’t have been more perfect,” Samantha said.

The Cookie Cottage will always offer what Samantha called “the classics.” To her, the classics are sugar cookies, shortbread, snickerdoodles and oatmeal, peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies.

At her Ramona store, however, Samantha’s most popular cookie wasn’t one of the classics. It was one of her specialty recipes: iced lemon blueberry.

“I have 450 of my own recipes that have been in my family or I have taken and altered and played with it for 20 years, literally,” she said.

Her other specialty cookies include iced lemon and salted caramel butterscotch. Her brownie selection includes red velvet cheesecake brownies and another favorite: her frosted peanut butter brownie.

Other selections will be rotated through seasonally.

“I do basically everything that is sweet,” she said. “If I don’t think that I can do it better, it will not be done here because I will leave that to someone else.”

Nebo School District

District opens new health center for employees

In an effort to combat skyrocketing health care costs, Nebo School District formally opened its new Health & Wellness Center on Jan. 27.

The center, located at 135 W. 300 South, Spanish Fork, is accessible to the district’s approximately 1,600 insured employees and their dependents.

The center offers basic health care services including care for infections and colds, sports and school physicals, immunizations and health and wellness exams.

The district has contracted with a company called CareHere to staff and operate the center. CareHere is a healthcare organization specializing in delivering innovative, quality and cost-effective primary care.

Making up the center’s staff are a doctor, a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse and a medical assistant.

Members of the district’s board of education are constantly struggling with the cost of insurance and how to provide the best benefits they can to district employees, said Ken Van Ausdal, human resource director for Nebo School District. Van Ausdal spoke during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held for the new center Jan. 24.

“Through this struggle, this vision came about to find a way that we can provide quality health care for the employees of the district at an affordable cost,” Van Ausdal said.

School district officials, city representatives and other community leaders participated in a ribbon-cutting event held Jan. 24 for Nebo School District’s new Health & Wellness Center in Spanish Fork. The center will provide basic, affordable health care services for school district employees.

Ryan Kay, human resources coordinator for the district, said a visit to the center will cost employees $35.

Any preventative services will be offered for free.

Patients will also be able to obtain a generic prescription through the center’s dispensary before they leave their appointment for $5.

“Every dollar that goes to insurance is a dollar that is taken out of the paycheck for a teacher,” Kay said. “This is our way to help control that and put the money back to our most important asset, our teachers.”

The new center will also help attract talented staff to the district as it is unusual for a school district to have its own onsite clinic for employees, Kay said.

The district has considered creating a health center for its employees for 10 years; plans became more concrete during the last three years. Half of a warehouse located behind the district’s offices was renovated to house the new 1,500-square-foot center. The other half of the warehouse was renovated to house several training classrooms for district employees. That area opened last fall.

“We’re excited for our employees,” said Nebo School District Board of Education Member R. Dean Rowley during the ribbon-cutting event. “We know it will be a great benefit to them, and that’s really why we’re here and that’s really why we did it.”
