Division of Wildlife Resources Free fishing day June 8 Free Fishing Day in Utah. Anglers don’t need a fishing license to fish in the state all day, but all other rules in the state’s fishing guidebook will still be in effect.

Anglers are encouraged to get a copy of the 2019 Utah Fishing Guidebook and learn the rules. The free guidebook is available at https://wildlife.utah.gov/ utah-fishing-guidebook.html. Copies are also available at DWR offices and

from fishing license agents across Utah.

Mt. Pleasant Jock Paget Eventing Clinic June 12-13 8 a.m.-5 p.m., both days, New Zealand Olympian Jock Paget will provide a clinic for Skyline Eventing equestrian riders on the cross country course at Cleone Peterson Eccles Equestrian Center and ConToy Arena, 1000 South 955 West, Mt. Historic Heritage Day home tours set May 25 The annual Spring City Heritage Day, hosted by Friends of Spring City, takes place Saturday, May 25 and amongst the many events of the day, a special tour takes place, which includes many of the town’s charming, mid-19th Century pioneer homes and buildings.

When coming to Spring City for the tours, be sure to check out the other Heritage Day activities including breakfast, lunch, an art auction, antique sale, a concert and handcrafted wares for sale.

Spring City leads the way in historic preservation and restoration in Utah. The entire town was designated a national historic district in the late 1970s, and since that time, over 60 local historical structures have been carefully and lovingly restored.

Today, Spring City is widely considered the best preserved example of a 19th Century Pioneer village in the entire country. Forbes magazine has recognized Spring City as one of America’s prettiest small towns.

This preservation includes the beautiful Old Spring City School, which has been renovated and was rededicated in 2017. It is now known as the Spring City Community Center (SCCC), 45 South 100 East, Spring City.

SCCC has become the crowning jewel of Spring City’s restoration efforts. It will be open all day to the public. While in the SCCC, be sure to check out the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum.

Spring City hosts fun-filled events Spring City leads the way in historic preservation and restoration in Utah. It is also home to several events this summer. Heritage Day returns, Pioneer Day celebrations, Bluegrass Festival, Plein Air Art Competition and artist studio tours.

Heritage Day May 25 Heritage Day will be celebrated all day long on Saturday, May 25, at the Spring City Community Center (SCCC), 45 South 100 East, and the City Park just south of the building. Breakfast will be available from 8-10 a.m., coffee from 8-11 a.m.

A bake sale will take place at 8:30 a.m., at the Main Street Museum, 46 North Main. The Main Street Museum houses most of the historical records for research in Spring City. The annual “Art Squared” silent art auction will be held at the SCCC from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Patrons can bid on one-foot square paintings by well-known Spring City artists. Art buyers can bid on the paintings anytime, but must be present at 2 p.m. as the auction ends. Additional works will also be on sale at the Spring City Art Gallery, 79 South Main Street.

Also at 9 a.m., an antique sale will be held on the third floor of the SCCC. There will be many craft-booths, displaying and selling a variety of locally handcrafted wares and artisanal fare.

While visiting the SCCC, be sure to check out the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) Museum. It is normally open Monday thru Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., but will be open on Heritage Day. Historic home tours, a tour of many of Spring City’s charming, mid-19th Century pioneer homes and buildings will be available from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Pioneer Days July 20-24 Pioneer Days, for Spring City, will take place July 20-24. The evening of Saturday, July 20, come to the city park, 100 East 50 South, for a concert featuring “Fiddle Express.” While there check out the Ice Cream Social. Best bring a chair to rest in while enjoying the evening.

Sunday, July 21, all locals and visitors are welcome to enjoy some music during the Old Time Gospel Music Revival, 7 p.m., in the Spring City Bowery, 100 East 50 South. Folks will need to bring own chairs.

On Monday, July 22, from 8-10 p.m., the annual Family Street Dance will take

place on Main Street. This year the band will be “Rock of Ages.”

Wednesday, July 24, is Utah’s Pioneer Day. Spring City festivities will begin with a Fun Run/Walk at 7 a.m., starting at the park. From 7-9 a.m., the Fireman’s Breakfast will be available for the hungry.

Be sure to check out the Main Street Museum, 46 North Main, which will be open from 9 a.m.-12 noon, or stroll down with chairs to Main Street where the annual Mammoth Parade will begin at 10 a.m. No parking is allowed on Main Street.

After the parade there will be fun and games in the park for all ages from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The activities will include a sidewalk chalk art contest, music by “Hired Guns,” lunch in the park, watermelon bust and hand-made craft vendors.

Plein Air Aug. 24-31 Later on in August, the Plein Air Painting Competition begins Saturday, Aug. 24, at 7 a.m. and continues for a full week, after which the paintings are all turned in on Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m., for judging. Later that day, from 7-9 p.m., the Plein Air Art Show Preview and reception for the artists and visitors will be held at Spring City Arts Gallery, 79 South Main. Competition winners will be announced and paintings will be available for purchase.

Then on Saturday, Aug. 31, from dawn till 10 a.m., a Quick Paint event will be held on Spring City’s Main Street. All of the art created during the morning Quick Paint event will be then sold in an auction from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the gallery.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Plein Air art will be exhibited at the gallery and on sale.

43rd Annual Scandinavian Festival returns to Ephraim Ephraim City welcomes the annual Scandinavian Heritage Festival as it returns again for the 43rd year on Memorial Weekend, Friday and Saturday, May 24-25. The festival includes two full days of music, entertainment, crafts, arts, demonstrations, speakers, stories, food, vendors, sports, car show, tours, parade and fireworks.

Visitors from all around come to enjoy the traditional festivities. About 650,000 Utahns trace their ancestry to Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. Many of those living in Sanpete are descended from 19th Century Scandinavian converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Pioneer reenactments The festival begins Friday, May 24, at 9 a.m., when the Pioneer Heritage Company will begin showing festivalgoers how the pioneers lived, worked and played. Come to Snow College, 100 East 100 North, for two days of reenactments that should give modern day folks a glimpse into the pioneer way of life.

See how pioneers cooked historic Scandinavian recipes over an open fire. Then, stick around for demonstrations on period sewing, woodworking and listen to some good old-fashioned pioneer storytelling.

The kids should have fun participating in pioneer children’s games and activities. The reenactments and demonstrations go from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The conference gives participants an opportunity to learn about and reflect on Scandinavian and pioneer influences in the lives of early settlers of Ephraim and the Sanpete Valley and are particularly interesting for those with Scandinavian or other pioneer ancestors.

Quilt Expo Also beginning at 10 a.m., Friday, is the Scandinavian Heritage Festival’s Quilt Expo. It takes place upstairs in the Ephraim Co-op Building, 96 North Main Street, on Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The expo includes quilts from local artists, particularly quilts that exemplify Ephraim’s Scandinavian or pioneer heritage and Mormon pioneer handicraft as kept alive by today’s aficionados.

A patchwork of quilts is expected to show up at the Scandinavian Festival Quilt Show; hand sewn, machine sewn, appliqued, pieced or perhaps even antique.

Many quilters are people who like to sit down, be with others and work together on puzzles, said quilt show coordinator Marcia Christensen.

“We’ve always said quilting is kind of crazy, you take some nice material and take it apart into pieces, and then you put it back together again.”

Local quilting groups, like the Mountain Valley Quilting Group in Gunnison, the Horseshoe Mountain and Stitchin’ Sisters groups in Ephraim, and Quilt Keepers in Wales, may contribute quilts to the show, but others are encouraged to bring their works in as well.

Antique quilts, that may have been in the family for years, are also welcome as are quilts by young or first-time quilters, and quilted projects other than blankets. But tied or kit quilts are not encouraged, Christensen said.

The show will not be judged, but visitors may vote for their favorite quilts.

To show a quilt, bring it to the co-op between 10 a.m.-6 p.m., on Wednesday May 22; or by 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, May 23.

Entertainment From Friday Noon through Saturday at dusk, the festival grounds on the north side of the Snow College campus and at Pioneer Heritage Park, 50 North 100 West, will buzz with costumes, dancing, storytelling, entertainment, historical tours, craft and food booths and more.

Storytelling In the cold, dark winters of old Scandinavia, storytellers were held in high esteem because of their ability to spin tales of adventure, romance, and war providing a welcome diversion from everyday tasks. Eager listeners stared into the flames while images of magical conquests swept through their minds and inflamed their imaginations.

Over time, electronic entertainments seem to have shuffled storytellers off to the pages of history books, except for special events such as Ephraim’s Scandinavian Heritage Festival.

Ned Larsen, aka “Lars” the fierce Viking, has made it a yearly family tradition to attend the Scandinavian Festival at Snow College, Ephraim. Be on the watch for Ned, family and friends that join in the Viking horde Friday and Saturday, May 24-25. and other folktales from various tellers who love the craft.

Dinner — Fireworks The Little Gourmet Scandinavian Dinner will be served Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Greenwood Student Center at Snow College. A minimum of 300 hungry souls will be fed. No reservations are required but there is a fee.

Come experience a Scandinavian dinner of epic proportions, literally a smorgasbord, a buffet-style meal that originated in Sweden.

A fireworks show will be held after dinner or at dusk Friday night which can be viewed from outside the Greenwood Student Center.

Saturday, May 25 Saturday begins early with race registration open and the Half-Marathon race beginning at 5:30 a.m. The 10k Fun Run at 6 a.m., 5K and Walk at 7 a.m. Participants can pre-register online at http://scandinavianfestival.org or onsite at 50 East 100 North, Ephraim.

Vike On A Bike The Fourth Annual “Vike on a Bike,” mountain bike race for all experience levels begins with registration Saturday morning, at 6:30 a.m., at 400 East 100 North. There is a registration fee which includes a T-shirt and race number. Families are encouraged to decorate their Viking bikes.

Viking bikers have four course options: beginner, novice, sport and family. The Beginner, Novice and Sport rides begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Family Bike Ride at 9 a.m. All riders are encouraged to be in the Grand Parade at 10 a.m.

The beginning and advanced races are seven-mile courses that begin at Snow College campus and go east along Kane Valley Road, with two loops over Black Hill for the advanced rider, and an easier loop for the beginning rider.

The Family Fun Ride will be out and back on Kane Valley Road.

The riders will finish back at the festival at the Noyes Building on the courses designed by Durke Gordon.

Aebleskivers, crafters There’s a lot of events this day so be sure to start the day off with an appetizing breakfast hosted by the Lions Club. It is the Annual Aebleskiver breakfast, served from 8-10 a.m., in a pavilion located in the parking lot east of the Ephraim Co-op, 96 North Main Street.

Then check out the Ephraim Co-op and explore the Olde Crafter’s Village. There will be arts and crafts for kids, various traditional artisans demonstrating trades such as a blacksmith, wood worker, Swedish rug weaving, soap maker and doll carver.

In addition artists will be demonstrating bobbin lace, tatting, harbinger, black work, crocheting, knitting, and yarn spinning.

Each year brings something new, come find out what it is!

Throughout this eventful day, there will be lots of entertainment, good food, bus tours, and activities for children and much, much more. Most entertainment events take place on the Snow College Main Stage or on the Heritage Plaza stage.

Grand Parade One of the Scandinavian Heritage Festival highlights is the annual parade, which will take place this year beginning at 10 a.m.

The parade route follows Main Street from 300 South to 200 North.

Ephraim City anticipates that this year’s parade will be very fun and interesting for all participants and spectators alike. The parade will give an opportunity to reflect upon the Scandinavian heritage of this part of the country. Each year the parade is well attended with local residents as well as may visitors who come for the weekend.

Families, businesses, organizations or for that matter, anyone, may enter the parade. All appropriate family friendly entries are welcome. A Scandinavian theme is encouraged for each entry.

Bus Tours There will be two bus tours available starting at 11:30 a.m., and again at 1:30 p.m. Each tour lasts 50 – 60 minutes and participants will be on the bus the entire time. The tour will visit parts of Ephraim, including historic sites, buildings, and homes that highlight the early history of the town and its Scandinavian settlers.

Tennis Tournament Participate in this year’s “Scandinavian Open” Tennis Tournament on Saturday, from 1-4 p.m., at the Snow College tennis courts, 375 North 200 East. There is a fee to participate.

Depending on the number of people that sign up there will be singles and doubles matches for men and women. Different skill level groups will also be considered. 17th Annual Rat Fink reunion May 30-June 1 Three days of enjoyment await lovers of music and art during the 17th Annual Rat Fink Reunion on May 30 through June 1.

Visitors can certainly get their fill of amazing art and great live performances that can’t be seen elsewhere!

This year’s reunion will not disappoint anyone, so plan now to visit the Rat Fink Store and Museum located at 404 East 300 North, Manti.

Both will be open from 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., each day of the reunion so visitors can certainly walk away with a ton of awesome memorabilia.

Dozens of Rat Fink artists help to infuse the reunion with a unique level of energy, creativity and fun. There is certainly no other event that brings so many Rat Fink fans together to share their common interest!

The reunion will begin Thursday, May 30, and end on June 1.

Music will be provided throughout by JP Kennedy, the official Rat Fink DJ. On May 30, at 10 a.m., the Rat Fink artists will be available to create special items for people. Visitors are encouraged to come see what the artists brought this year and meet and greet the artists, shop in the Rat Fink Store, tour the Rat Fink Museum or enjoy one of the limited tours of the Roth residence.

This year there will be two special items unveiled at 1 p.m., first will be the Rat Fink BBQ created by Sjaak Klein Heerenbrink, a metal artist based in the Netherland. Then the unveiling of the statue of Ed Roth, the Big Daddy himself, created by Tony Natsoulas from Sacramento, CA. At 6 p.m., there will be a live concert and a fundraising dinner for Dano Bonanno. Banana splits will be available at 8:30 p.m., then the store will close at 9 p.m., until morning.

Friday, May 31, at 9 a.m., everyone who missed out the day before, can meet and greet with Rat Fink artists who can make customized personalized items.

9:30 a.m., at the museum there will be a special recognition for the Hall of Fame with guest speakers Sjaak Klein Heerenbrink, Ken “Mitch” Mithchroney and Bob Bubins of the National Corvette Museum. The store will also be open and limited tours of the Roth residence will be available.

There will be a photo shoot of all Corvettes and then a pinstriping demonstration at 11:30 a.m., with Gene “Geno” Chambers and Mike “Mazooma” Babbel.

From 12:30 to 2 p.m., screened T-Shirt art will be created featuring Greg “Coop” Cooper. At the same time there will be a concert featuring “Summer of ‘89”. While visiting, be sure to check out the awards and auction displays done by the Rat Fink Artists.

From 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the band “Junction 89” will perform a concert in the park followed by a live auction at 1 p.m. The car show awards will take place at 4 p.m.

With the car show wrapping up, a show car cruise will take place at 5:30 p.m., on Manti Main Street.

At 6:30 p.m., enjoy a concert by “Junction 89” at the Roth Residence, 404 East 300 North, Manti. During the concert a fundraising dinner will be held for Ryan Dahlberg. Free fishing day scheduled June 8 A fishing license is not required on Free Fishing Day, Saturday, June 8. If it’s been years since going out fishing, or one has never fished before, mark the date on the fishing calendar.

Randy Oplinger says even experienced anglers should mark June 8 on their calendars. He says early June is one of the best times of the year to fish in Utah, which makes Free Fishing Day the perfect time to take someone who doesn’t have a fishing license fishing.

“Bring a spouse, a teenager or a friend to introduce to fishing,” says Oplinger, sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, “Free Fishing Day is a great day and way to do it.”

Special events People who don’t have any fishing equipment, or would like some help fishing can attend one of the special events planned to take place that day.

Oplinger says, “Volunteers who can help anyone fish will be available at most events.

Before the events, many of these waters will be stocked with fish.”

Community Lake The U.S. Forest Service is sponsoring a Free Fishing Day event which includes a fishing contest. It will be held at Community Lake (sometimes called Lake Hill Pond), in Ephraim Canyon, about five miles east of Ephraim.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. The fishing contest starts at 10 a.m. Food and prizes will be available. Anglers must bring their own fishing equipment and bait. Before the event, the DWR will stock the pond with trout.

Ephraim Square welcomes visitors to Scandinavian Festival In the late 1800s the historic Ephraim Co-op building was built to serve residents of the area with merchandise from the Salt Lake City based ZCMI Company. Just south of the co-op is the Old Granary Art Center. It was originally built for the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to feed the hungry.

Both buildings are part of Ephraim Square, located at about 90 North Main in Ephraim. Visitors are welcomed year-round at both buildings. The Co-op is a successful gift and craft store, while the granary serves as an art gallery. A number of events are taking place at both this summer.

Scandinavian Days May 24-25 Friday, May 24, Scandinavian Days begins and during the festival, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., the annual quilt show is held upstairs in the Ephraim Co-op, 96 North Main. Free admission, be sure to vote for a favorite.

Lots of Scandinavian items will be for sale in the Co-op including, flags, Viking hats, collector’s items, flower headbands, aebleskiver pans, ornaments, Danish peppernuts, Swedish Bratzlies, the co-op’s famous fudge and Lingonberry Jam, which can be hard to find.

On Saturday, May 25, the quilt show continues in the Co-op from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

There will be a taster’s table,

with lots of items to sample. On the Ephraim Square grounds outside the Co-op, explorers will find the Olde Crafter’s Village and art for kids.

There will be various traditional artisans demonstrating trades such as a blacksmith, wood worker, Swedish rug weaving and doll carving. In addition, artists will demonstrate bobbin lace, tatting, crocheting, knitting and yarn spinning.

Crafters are expected to include a Nordic sock maker and the Icelandic Association of Utah. Anyone who wants to learn about a craft or have some fun are welcome. Crafters may charge a small fee for items the children can make in the Olde Crafter’s Village.

Saint Lucia, whose name Lucia refers to “light”, is celebrated on Saint Lucy’s Day, also called the Feast of Saint Lucy. It is a Christian feast day normally celebrated during Advent.

History The Ephraim Co-op building and the Old Granary Art Center were constructed of Oolite stone between 1871 and 1874. They are a rare example of Greek revival architecture with a King Post Truss roof.

The original co-op provided many items in the area for the first time, including store-bought shoes and lace.

The building also housed the first post office, a dance hall, and the upstairs housed the Sanpete Stake Academy from 1888 to 1904, which later became Snow College. It has been the center for many town meetings and educational activities over the years.

Mormon Miracle Pageant set for last performances June 13-22 This year marks the 53rd yearly presentation of the pageant and will be the last performance. The pageant will be presented on eight nights, June 13-15, 18-22 with no performance on Sunday or Monday. Admission is free. Gates open each night at 6 p.m., and the pageant begins at 9:30 p.m.

For the past 52 years, Manti has taken on new life and excitement when the Manti Temple grounds of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been turned into a giant stage, larger than a football field, for the Mormon Miracle Pageant.

Travelers are expected to flock to Manti for these last performances. Those who plan to come are encouraged to plan for accommodations in advance. There are places to stay, but those may fill up rapidly.

Visitors are encouraged to come early, spend some time of quiet relaxation and historical reflection, tour the grounds of the historic Manti LDS Temple, built in 1888 and spend a night or two in the area.

During the pageant, the town truly comes alive as a cast of over 900 depict with dance, music and drama, a unique historical production for a large audience seated under the canopy of stars.

This year, the pageant will again retell the account of the resurrected Jesus Christ visiting the people on the American continents. The dramatization includes Christ healing and teaching the people, as well as blessing the children, just as he did in Jerusalem.

Then time fast-forwards to the 1800s, when farm boy Joseph Smith received and later translated the record of this ancient American people. The record is known today as the Book of Mormon.

Finally, the presentation concludes with the story of a fictional couple searching for religious truth and enlightenment and the joy they find upon discovering that family relationships can be eternal.

following tips useful: Arrive early for optimum seating. First-come seating is provided for 14,000 and there is room on the grass for additional spectators.

June evenings can be cool so bring a sweater or blanket. Blankets may be used on chairs but are not allowed in the aisles.

It is wise to also be prepared in case of inclement weather.

There are facilities and accommodations for special needs, lost and found, drinking fountains, restrooms, translators. Search and Rescue and emergency personnel are on site.

While the pageant is free, dinner is not.

Travelers are welcome to bring a picnic dinner or visitors can also purchase a barbequed turkey or roast beef dinner near the pageant grounds.

The tasty meals are reasonably priced

and will be served each evening during the pageant at the National Guard Armory, 100 West Union, in Manti. In addition, a variety of food and craft booths will also be available in the Food Court located at 200 North Main. Remember to eat before returning to the pageant as no food or drink is allowed on the temple grounds.

Plan to stay overnight in Manti the night of the pageant as traffic will be exceptionally congested at the conclusion of the production.

Many visitors find that staying at a bed and breakfast adds to the experience, providing a unique local perspective, plus great service. Whether choosing a bed and breakfast, hotel, or campground, be sure to make reservations well in advance.

Camping at Manti City Park, 200 North 300 West, is allowed only during the pageant on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservations are not taken. Restroom facilities are available, but no showers.

There is a fee, so campers should go ahead and set up tents or trailers and a camp-fee collector will visit the site to collect. The park is within walking distance of the temple grounds.

Be sure to take some time before or after the pageant to explore the region. Take a scenic drive, rent ATVs, check out the nearby fishing, hiking and mountain biking trails or visit one of the museums, unique boutiques or craftsman shops.

For those not familiar with the story of The Book of Mormon, it may help to learn a bit about its history before attending the pageant. Background information can be obtained from locals or members of the LDS Church or check out a copy of The Book of Mormon from the library in Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant or Manti.

Celebrate Welsh Days in Wales June 28-29 The quiet town of Wales, originally named “Coal Bed,” due to the coal mines operated by immigrants from Wales, will get a bit rowdier for the annual Welsh Days, scheduled to be held Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, in the city park, 150 South State.

The name, Coal Bed, was changed to Wales in 1869. There once was a railroad depot and it was an important and busy mining center. The mines and town were abandoned when more productive mines were discovered in Scofield. Many of the present residents are descendants of the original miners.

Welsh Days events include games, Dutch oven cooking, strongman competitions, baked goods, fun runs, live entertainment, mammoth parade, contests, breakfast, lunch, a watermelon bust and other fun activities.

Friday, June 28 Festivities begin at 2:30 p.m., when the Dutch oven cook-off is held, in the park, 150 South State. For details, contact Carol Jensen at (435) 851-4599.

Then it’s time to get registered, at 4 p.m., for the Junior Strongman Competition, followed by their competition challenges at 4:30 p.m.

The annual town raffle will begin at 6:30 p.m., tickets available, including a quilt by QuiltKeepers Guild which is worth much more than the price of the ticket.

Must be present to win all items except the quilt. The quilt may be viewed in Wales Town Hall, 150 North State.

The Dutch oven judging will take place at 6:30 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner at 7 p.m., meat provided. The Dutch oven cook-off items will be included. Bring a favorite dish to share, but no green salads or chips. Be sure to bring a chair to sit on.

Also, from 8 a.m.-10 a.m., Car Show registration will take place.

Then prepare for the Children’s Parade to begin at 9:45 a.m., followed by the Mammoth Parade at 10 a.m. For any parade questions, call Liz (435) 469-0165.

The car show begins during the parade, at 10 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m. at the park.

The main event, Strongman Competition, begins at 11 a.m. Participants must be present and pre-registered by 8:30 a.m.

Six challenges face the Strongman participants, the farmer’s walk, atlas stones, log clean and press, ring toss, pillars of Hercules and strongman relay. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place overall, as well as medals awarded for the highest points scored in each event.

From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be children’s games. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with hamburgers and hot dogs available for purchase at the park.

After the Strongman Competition, there will be foot races and two-legged sack races. There will also be a pie eating contest, a watermelon bust and water balloon toss.

Manti hosts five big events this summer Manti is the oldest town in Sanpete County and serves as the county seat and home to the county fairgrounds. There are five big summer events taking place in Manti this year. The Annual Rat Fink Reunion, Mormon Miracle Pageant, Independence Day, Manti ATV Ride and the Sanpete County Fair.

Rat Fink Manti is home to the famous Rat Fink Museum, featuring displays of the works of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, creator of the Rat Fink characters and the cool, unique cars he built.

Manti ATV Ride The Arapeen OHV Trail System is one of the most scenic mountain trails in Utah, as such, the annual Manti ATV Ride presents a great opportunity for family and friends to explore the system during a three-day ride, Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 15-17.

Sanpete County Fair This year Sanpete County will hold the annual fair Aug. 17-24, at the fairgrounds located on the north end of town, complete with a full week of fun and activities. By August, gardeners and crafters have had time to grow and create many works of art to display at the fair.

Visitors will find displays of all sorts, a rodeo, the ever-popular demolition derby, animals of all descriptions, cowboy poetry, ATV barrel race, and livestock shows.

About Manti Prophet Brigham Young, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sent the first settlers to Manti after he received an invitation by Ute Chief Wakara to send people down to the San Pitch area to teach the Utes how to farm.

The original company of 50 pioneer families arrived in the winter of 1849. The pioneers, whose first camp was established on what is now Temple Hill, spent that first winter enduring hardships of scant food, clothing, hostile Indians and makeshift housing.

Settlers were forced to use wagons and dugouts for protection against the severe cold and 700 Indians camped not far away. About half of the cattle froze to death and the people were unable to get more food and supplies from Salt Lake City.

But winter was not the only problem, as spring approached the ground thawed and the pioneers were faced with hundreds of rattlesnakes. Miraculously not one of the settlers died from snakebite.

Isaac Morley, the leader of this pioneer group was given the honor of naming the town. He suggested ‘Manti’ as a good name, and so the name was adopted. Manti is a town mentioned in the Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ, which is considered as scripture by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hub City Days celebration held June 28-July 4 in Mt. Pleasant Why celebrate the Fourth of July on only one day? In Mt. Pleasant its more than just a one day event, it’s called Hub City Days. It has always been a family affair, and festivities include a golf tournament, Mountain Man Rendezvous, 10k/5k Fun run, carnival rides, tractor contest, parade down State and Main Streets, early bird breakfast in the park, food, games and entertainment.

Also included are two days of RMPRA Hub City Rodeo, and a spectacular fireworks display.

First up is The Skyline Freedom Fest Eventing which jumps things into gear on Friday and Saturday, June 28-29, at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Equestrian Center and ConToy Arena, 1000 South 955 West.

Eventing features an equestrian triathlon, where horse and riders tackle three phases of competition, dressage, show jumping and high speed cross country jumping. The fest eventing runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., each day, for a full day of competition. Best of all, admission is free.

The annual Hub City Days Golf Tournament tees off Saturday, June 29. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., at Skyline Mountain Resort Golf Course. The tourney will be a two-person scramble and first tee-off is at 8 a.m.

The 19th Annual Mountain Man Rendezvous will be in town Wednesday, July 4, at Mt. Pleasant City Park, 1000 South State Street.

The rendezvous comes with many varied activities and may include all of the following: muzzle loader shoots, exhibits, trading, displays, candy cannon for kids, tomahawk and knife throwing contests, frying pan toss, Dutch oven cook-off, historical reenactments and more. Watch for a schedule posted in the Mountain Man village at the park.

Rendezvous participants camp out in authentic teepees and wall tents during the event. Spectators are always welcome at these rendezvous.

On Thursday, July 4, at 6 a.m., runners register for the Fourth Annual 5k-10k Drive 4 Food Fun Run race which begins at 6:30 a.m. Meet in the parking lot at North Sanpete High School, 700 South 400 East, Mt. Pleasant.

Runners can register in advance on-line at http://www.sanpetepantry.com/drive4food. There will be participant awards and drawing for prizes. Proceeds will go to the Sanpete Pantry food bank.

From 7-9 a.m., breakfast in the city park sponsored by Sanpete Valley Hospital.

At 8 a.m., there will be a tennis tournament at North Sanpete High School, 700 South 300 East.

The Mt. Pleasant City Library will have a book sale, at 9 a.m., with games and prizes on the library lawn, 24 East Main.

From 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the Mountain Man Rendezvous activities will be available for spectators and participants in the park. Look for the posted schedule or ask at any Mountain Man vendor tent for directions.

At the same time, the children’s parade will line-up at 700 South State Street by the high school sign. The parade route will travel north on State Street to Main Street and then travel west.

At noon, look for the restored and ugly tractor contest. Located across the street east of Mt. Pleasant City Park, participants will be showing their prize tractors hoping to win prizes sponsored by Mt. Pleasant City. Participants just need to bring their tractor. Independence Day brings fun to Moroni June 29-July 4 Moroni hosts a full slate of activities this year during their annual 4th of July Celebration. Prepare now for the famous BBQ turkey dinner and the annual ping pong ball drop from an airplane overhead along the parade route.

Fairview Pioneer Days extends from July 12-27 Fairview is the largest town in the northeast end of the Sanpete Valley and is located at the junction of the San Pitch River and Cottonwood Creek. Like most of the towns in Sanpete County, Fairview has a rich architectural legacy.

In addition to the annual demolition derby, there are several other activities that take place during Pioneer Days including Lace Days, sports tournaments, ATV rodeo, kids rodeo, horse parade, OHV drive for food, fireworks, fireside, Fun Run, craft fair, EMT Barbecue, vintage car show, art walk, Fairview Idol, musical comedy play and two golf tourneys.

Prepare now for the 35th Annual Demolition Derby and all the other events in Fairview. Tickets are $15 each and required for everyone attending the demolition derby, including babies, and will be available online at http://fairviewcity.com.

Skyline Eventing thrills equestrians in Mt. Pleasant Skyline Eventing Park, south end of Mt. Pleasant, is Utah’s premier cross country facility offering horse race tracks from introductory skill levels through preliminary level.

28th Annual Lace Days returns to Fairview Museum The 28th annual Fairview Lace Days will be held Monday through Wednesday, July 15-17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in cooperation with the Academy, Beehive and Sanpete Lacers at the Fairview Museum of History and Art, 84 North 100 East.

This year it will be a “Lace in” so interested participants are encouraged to come and bring handwork they are currently working on or try a “taste” of bobbin lace. There will be a few mini classes on spangling and bobbin painting also.

This is an opportunity to learn about the different types of lace and the tools used to make it. There will be demonstrations, information and Snowgoose will be this year’s vendor and will have all sorts of supplies, materials and tools of the trade for sale.

Visitors are welcome to come and watch the lacers at work on all kinds of lace. Participants are not required to register, but it will help the organizers to prepare for Lace Days.

Modern day visitors can get there by driving east through Salt Creek Canyon to enter the Sanpete Valley from Nephi or by heading north out of Moroni. Once they arrive on the east end of Salt Creek Canyon those traveler’s will encounter historic Fountain Green.

The original campground was located just below the Divide and Mt. Nebo where a green fountain called “Big Springs,” which was second to no other spring in the Sanpete Valley, puts out some of the best water around.

Over time the Johnson’s and other families from Santaquin in Utah Valley settled the area and named it Fountain Green.

Each July, Fountain Green throws a big celebration known as Lamb Days. The name is fitting due to the historic nature of the area where raising sheep was a huge industry and is still an ongoing way of life for some.

Lamb Days draws people from all over and the annual activities include: Co-ed softball tournaments, entertainment, youth lamb show and judging, mutton and sourdough dinner, youth talent show, fun run, chuck-wagon breakfast, craft fair, parade, and fireworks.

Lamb Days events This year the events get started on Tuesday, July 16, as the annual Co-ed softball Tournament gets under way. The tournament continues through Thursday, July 18, and participants must be current or past residents only. Sign up at the Fountain Green General Store, 84 South State.

On Friday and Saturday, July 19-20, the men’s softball tournament will take place.

Also on Friday, July 19, at Noon, a youth lamb show and judging will be held at Fountain Green Park’s Big Bowery, 300 West Center.

At 1:30 p.m., lamb sandwich sale and a lamb sale at 2 p.m., will be held.

Sawdust dive and prize drawings at 4 p.m., followed by the annual co-ed softball championships at 6 p.m.

Plein air competition paints a scene The annual Spring City Arts Plein Air Competition and artist studio tours will bring artists and visitors flocking into the area for a chance to create or view masterpiece artistic works from Aug. 24-31.

Plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif, “painting on the ground” in French.

Spring City is the perfect location in Sanpete Valley to paint in the open air and to enjoy camaraderie, share ideas or just take in the magnificent scenery and appreciate the talents of others. It’s an opportunity to see artists at work outside and get a glimpse of their studios inside.

Competition schedule The 2019 competition begins for participating artists on Saturday, Aug. 24 and the painting continues until 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30, when finished paintings must be turned in for judging.

Later that evening, from 7-9 p.m., a Plein Air Art Show Preview and reception for participating artists and visitors will take place at the Spring City Arts Gallery, 79 South Main Street. Competition winners will be announced, awards presented and the created artwork will be available for sale.

Quick paint The morning of Saturday, Aug. 31, from dawn until 10 a.m., registered artists will participate in a “quick-paint” event along Main Street, Spring City. Between 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., the finished paintings will be sold at auction, with bidding online and by phone.

Visitors are encouraged to come early and watch the artists at work, then purchase a favorite painting for home or business display.

Exhibition, sales An exhibition and sale of works from the plein air competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., that Saturday, which is a great opportunity to add works by some remarkable artists to personal collections.

Basic plein air rules Artists participating in this plein air

event may paint anywhere in Sanpete County; its cities, farms, mountains and streams and of course in Spring City. Possible images could include historic streets, structures, pastoral vistas, mountain and stream scenes and agricultural subjects.

Participants may paint up to four plein air works for submission, following registration of blank canvases. All traditional plein air painting mediums are acceptable, but work must be created “en plein air”, painted outdoors, on-site, without the assistance of photography or technology.

Artists who participate in the Saturday morning “quick-paint” will be allowed to use photos for reference, but only during that morning’s event.

Treasures on display at Fairview Museum of History and Art Visitors to Sanpete County are encouraged to seek out one of Utah’s jewels, The Fairview Museum of History and Art. Too big for just one building, the exhibits fill two large buildings, the Heritage and Horizon buildings and grounds located at 85 North 100 East.

Heritage The Heritage Building is a former school built in 1900, where visitors can explore room after room of displays on two floors.

There are thousands of historical artifacts, and over 100 pieces of art created by world-renowned sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks, which Dr. Fairbanks donated to the museum.

Fairbanks sculptures are displayed world-wide, many in Washington D.C. He also sculpted many larger-than-life size works representing major events in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Many of the rooms in the Heritage building display settings from the 1800s; a sitting room including furniture, knick-knacks, and piano; a fully furnished bedroom; a complete kitchen; and one unusual room shows an 1800s dentist office (try not to wince when you see it).

Horizon The more contemporary Horizon Building houses regional art, including the Rotating Artists Gallery that features the artistic creations of selected artists and changes every six weeks.

Also in the Horizon Building are historical displays such as the Blackhawk Indian War, a large Clark Bronson bronze collection, an impressive shell and rock collection and historical and genealogical library collections.

But it’s hard to miss the center piece, an enormous mammoth skeleton that was discovered just 13 miles from Fairview. Another unusual display is the history of turkeys in the region, starting with how they were used by the Native American culture.

On the grounds Outside, visitors can see a large display of antique machinery and

Relic Home sports new arrival Mt. Pleasant is home to historic Relic Home located at 150 South State, which is said to be the first home built outside of the old Mt. Pleasant fort. The Relic Home houses a wide array of well-preserved artifacts from times gone by. Visitors are known to have traveled from locales far away to catch just a glimpse of what life used to be like during pioneer times.

Last summer, a new original cabin was placed on the grounds west of the blacksmith shop. While in the area, visitors are encouraged to drop by and see the new arrival’s featured displays.

Local residents and anyone seeking to know more about the area’s history are welcome to drop in, along with school students for arranged tours.

The museum will be open on weekdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and will be open on the 4th of July and special occasions by appointment for family reunions, youth groups and class reunions.

A fully outfitted blacksmith shop can be toured and a blacksmith is on-site for special occasions. The blacksmith shop is unique, as it is the only operational shop in the area.

The Relic Home is not just a house full of relics, but one full of family histories, pictures and information on many sites, including cemetery information and special features of older homes in town and their histories.

Visitors welcome daily at fish hatchery The Fountain Green State Fish Hatchery is open every day of the week for visitors. It is located northwest of Fountain Green at 1600 West Fish Hatchery Road. When traveling on Highway 132 between Nephi and Fountain Green watch for the signs just north of Fountain Green.

There is a pretty good chance that anyone who plans or likes to go fishing in Utah will catch a fish that may have come from the hatchery. It all starts with thousands of eggs which hatch and become some of the thousands and thousands of fish swimming in tanks just waiting as they grow. It is truly fascinating to watch the fish in their various stages of growth.

Raising fish is a year-round project and always in demand because most reservoir fisheries are heavily used and not able to sustain themselves through natural recruitment or reproduction of the fish in the pond.

So the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has implemented a management program dependent on stocking hatchery-reared fish statewide. The Fountain Green facility is just one of the division’s hatcheries, but it is also the only one that is open to the public year-round.

The hatchery is a great location for the whole family to visit as it provides an opportunity to view some of Utah’s fish species close up and a sense of the work that must go into stocking Utah’s lakes and streams.

To grow healthy fish requires clean water and one of the things Fountain Green is well-known for is its clean, pure water. The water comes from an artesian spring that flows from the base of the San Pitch Mountain range known as “The Big Springs.”

This spring is the source of water for the hatchery and is channeled through multiple tanks where the fish grow and are separated by size.

The Fountain Green hatchery raises 1,000,000 fish or about 180,000 pounds of trout yearly. Species include Rainbow, Cutthroat and Tiger Trout. The fish raised here are used to stock primarily the lakes and reservoirs in the region along with other

Fountain Green Fountain Green Library serves the communities of Fountain Green, Moroni, and Wales. The 2019 summer theme is “Summer Treasures at our Library.” It will run from June 3 to Aug. 12, and is open to all ages.

Sanpete aquatics provides fun at five local locations Swimming isn’t just a fun way to cool off during the summer.

It’s one of the few sports or activities that doesn’t cost lots of money or require special gear or equipment. It offers a total-body workout, is easier on the joints, increases flexibility, and can be enjoyed at any age—from toddlers to seniors.

Swimming is actually a physical activity in which you can participate any time of the year if an indoor pool is available or temperatures are mild. So, find a swimsuit, grab a friend, and head for the nearest pool. There are five facilities in Sanpete County which provide public swimming.

Mt. Pleasant The newest facility in the county is the Mt. Pleasant Aquatic Center located at 74 East Main. The pool is available year-round as an indoor pool with six lap lanes, a zero depth entry wading area and small water slide. Large doors on the north end can be opened during good weather.

The pool is adjacent to the Mt. Pleasant City Splash Pad, with its outdoor fountains, water jets and deck area for sunbathing.

Ephraim The Snow College — Horne Activity Center is located at 350 East Center Street, Ephraim. The facility is open to all students and the public. There are some equipment rentals available in addition to facility use charges. The building schedules can change at any time.

Gunnison Gunnison Swimming Pool is located at 43 West 300 North, Gunnison. This pool is an indoor pool that is next door to Gunnison City Park. In addition to the main pool, there is a kiddie pool and water slide. During warm weather, large doors on the south side of the facility can be opened for ventilation.

North Sanpete Skyline Mountain Resort Pool is located between Mt. Pleasant and Fairview, about 2.5 miles south of Fairview on the Mountainville Highway. The facility has a medium-sized outdoor pool with water slide. It is open during summer months, Memorial Day thru Labor Day and welcomes the public to use the pool.

Summer hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Saturday; and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Private rentals are available. For more information, call (435) 427-9590.

New this year, the pool is now a saltwater swimming pool. It is the only public saltwater pool in Sanpete. Those who swim in saltwater swimming pools will notice a level of comfort that is different from the typical pool that uses added chlorine and chemical stabilizers for sanitation.

Chlorine has the tendency to cause red eyes, itchy skin, and discolored hair. Because saltwater is softer on skin than chlorine, those who use a saltwater swimming pool won’t have to suffer any of those symptoms of chlorine.

In a saltwater pool, a regenerative process creates the chlorine and the saltwater purification system provides on-site production of the sanitizer necessary to maintain water in a safe, healthy and algae-free condition.

Top-notch golf courses call Sanpete home Sanpete County is the home of two top-notch golf courses.

East of Sterling in Palisade State Park is the Palisade Golf Course.

Southeast of Fairview, golfers will find the Skyline Mountain Resort Golf Course. Both are unique and have their challenges.

Palisade The Palisade 18 hole, par 72 golf course measures 6,360 yards from the back tee markers but plays longer because all the par-5s play uphill. However, the golf course will challenge even the most advanced player because of the difficulties encountered around the greens. The mountain layout has an elevation change of 230 feet from 5,885 feet at the base to 6,115 at the top.

Though it’s expansive undulating greens are truly a test, the greatest challenge may be signature hole number 4. This 179-yard par-3 has an elevation drop of 70 feet and requires golfers to carry the ball over a canyon, and land it precisely on the green. A ball hit too long will hit into the mountain behind the green and ricochet anywhere.
