Annual Lace Days coming to FV Museum The 27th annual Fairview Lace Days will be held Monday through Wednesday, July 16-18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in cooperation with the Academy, Beehive and Sanpete Lacers at the Fairview Museum of History and Art, 84 North 100 East.

Classes will be taught all three days and two special guest teachers will appear this year. Elizabeth Peterson, Salt Lake City; and Maria Provencher, California; will be teaching classes. Provencher will be this year’s vendor.

Participants in the classes must register in advance by calling the museum at (435) 427-9216. Visitors are welcome to come and watch the lacers at work on all kinds of lace.

Those who plan to participate should bring personal lace and join the lacers. This is an opportunity to learn about the different types of lace and the tools used to make it.

Plein Air Competition paints a scene Aug. 28-Sept. 1 The annual Spring City Arts Plein Air Competition and artist studio tours will bring artists and visitors flocking into the area for a chance to create or view masterpiece artistic works from Aug. 28Sept. 1.

Plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif, “painting on the ground” in French.

Spring City is the perfect location in Sanpete valley to paint in the open air and to enjoy camaraderie, share ideas or just take in the magnificent scenery and appreciate the talents of others. It’s an opportunity to see artists at work outside and get a glimpse of their studios inside.

Competition begins The 2018 competition begins for participating artists on Tuesday, Aug. 28 and the painting continues until 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31, when finished paintings must be turned in for judging.

Later that same day from 7-9 p.m., a Plein Air Art Show Preview and reception for participating artists and visitors will take place at the Spring City Arts Gallery, 79 South Main Street.

Quick paint, awards The morning of Saturday, Sept.

1, from dawn until 10 a.m., registered artists will participate in a “quick-paint” event along Main Street, Spring City. At 10 a.m., winners of the plein air competition will be announced, and awards 14

Auction, sales At 11 a.m., paintings created during the Saturday morning “quick-paint” will be sold during a live auction. Visitors are encouraged to come early and watch the artists at work, then purchase a favorite painting for home or business display.

An exhibition and sale of works from the plein air competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., that Saturday, which is a great opportunity to add works by some remarkable artists to personal collections.

Artist studio tours Participating artists will open their studios and galleries for visitors on Saturday, Sept. 1. Tickets for the studio tour can be purchased that Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., at Spring City Arts Gallery, 79 South Main.

Those who purchase tickets will obtain a map to the artist studios and can proceed from the Spring City Arts Gallery to the individual artist studios of choice.

While visiting the Spring City Arts Gallery, be sure to take some time and view the art on display in the gallery. Those who do will see a great representation of local artwork.

Basic Plein Air rules Artists participating in this plein air event may paint anywhere in Sanpete County; its cities, farms, mountains and streams and of course in Spring City. Possible images could include historic streets, structures, pastoral vistas, mountain and stream scenes and agricultural subjects.

Participants may paint up to four plein air works for submission, following registration of blank canvases. All traditional plein air painting mediums are acceptable, but work must be created “en plein air”, painted outdoors, on-site, without the assistance of photography or technology.

Artists who participate in the Saturday morning “quick-paint” will be allowed to us photos for reference, but only during that morning’s event.

All paintings created during the competition will be available for purchase during the Saturday sale.

Libraries hold summer reading programs Mt. Pleasant Mt. Pleasant Public Library Summer Reading theme this year is, “Libraries Rock!” Opening event will be Wednesday, May 30, at the Mt. Free fishing day June 9 A fishing license is not required on Free Fishing Day June 9. If it’s been years since going out fishing, or one has never fished before, mark the date on the fishing calendar.

June 9 is Free Fishing Day in Utah. Anglers don’t need a fishing license to fish in the state that day.

Randy Oplinger says even experienced anglers should mark June 9 on their calendars. He says early June is one of the best times of the year to fish in Utah, which makes Free Fishing Day the perfect time to take someone who doesn’t have a fishing license fishing.

“Bring a spouse, a teenager or a friend to introduce to fishing,” says Oplinger, sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, “Free Fishing Day is a great day and way to do it.”

Special events People who don’t have any fishing equipment, or would like some help fishing can attend one of the special events planned to take place that day.

Oplinger says, “Volunteers who can help anyone fish will be available at most events. Before the events, many of these waters will be stocked with fish.”

Community Lake The U.S. Forest Service is sponsoring a Free Fishing Day event which includes a fishing contest. It will be held at Community Lake (sometimes called Lake Hill Pond), in Ephraim Canyon, about five miles east of Ephraim.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. The fishing contest starts at 10 a.m. Food and prizes will be available. Anglers must bring their own fishing equipment and bait.

Before the event, the DWR will stock the pond with trout.

Mt. Pleasant is home to the historic Relic Home located at 150 South State, which houses a wide array of well-preserved artifacts from times gone by. Visitors are known to have traveled from locales far away to catch just a glimpse of what life used to be like here This summer a new arrival, an original cabin, is expected to be placed on the grounds near the blacksmith shop. While in the area, visitors are encouraged to drop by and see the new addition.

The museum is open on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be open on special occasions by appointment for family reunions, youth groups and class reunions.

A fully outfitted blacksmith shop can be toured and a blacksmith is on-site for special occasions. The blacksmith shop is unique as it is the only operational shop in the area.

The Relic Home is not just a house full of relics, but one full of family histories, pictures and information on many sites, including cemetery information and special features of older homes in town and their histories.

Mt. Pleasant Hub City Days celebrates June 23-July 4 Why celebrate the Fourth of July on only one day? In Mt. Pleasant it’s more than just a one-day event, it’s called Hub City Days.

It has always been a family affair, and festivities include a golf tournament, Mountain Man Rendezvous, 10k/5k Fun run, carnival rides, tractor contest, parade down State Street, early bird breakfast in the park, food, games and entertainment.

Also included are two days of RMPRA Hub City Rodeo, and a spectacular fireworks display.

First up is the annual Hub City Days Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 23. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., at Skyline Mountain Resort Golf Course. It will be a two-person scramble and first teeoff is at 8 a.m.

The golf course is located 4.5 miles northeast of Mt. Pleasant on the Mountainville Highway, which begins at 200 North in Mt. Pleasant. For information call the proshop at (435) 427-9575.

Saturday June 30 through Wednesday, July 4, visitors will be able to experience the excitement of carnival rides and vendor booths with fun, food and crafts.

Skyline Freedom Fest returns June 29-30 Skyline Eventing Park, located on the south end of Mt. Pleasant, is Utah’s premier cross country facility offering horse race tracks from introductory skill levels through preliminary level.

The Skyline Eventing Committee encourages all to come experience the thrill of eventing during the Skyline Freedom Fest, June 29-30, at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Equestrian Center and ConToy Arena, 1000 South 955 West, in Mt. Pleasant. Admission is always free.

On June 29, at 9 a.m., the two phases, dressage and show jumping, will be held most of the day. Then on Saturday, June 30, at 9 a.m., there will be a mini event with dressage, cross country, and show jumping competitions.

The sport of eventing is likened to the equestrian triathlon where horse and riders tackle three phases of competition. Dressage demonstrates the training of the horse under saddle.

Cross country is a test of endurance and physicality where horses and riders jump solid elements at a high rate of speed. Show jumping shows the grace of the

Freedom rings out as Manti celebrates July 4 Manti will begin its July 4 festivities with the annual ringing of the Freedom Bell at the American Legion Hall on Main Street from 6 to 7 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come and help ring the bell.

At 6:30 a.m., registration will take place at the west pavilion at the city park for the 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ one mile run. The race begins at 7 a.m.

Also from 7 to 10 a.m., the American Legion breakfast will be served at the Manti City Park at the east pavilion.

Bike decorating will take place at 9 a.m., followed by the Bike Ride/ Race at the northeast corner of the park.

At 10 a.m., the patriotic program will be held with the flag rais-

ing by the Boy Scouts of America.

The grand marshal will speak and the Miss 4th of July royalty will be presented.

At 10 a.m., signups will be held for the children’s fashion show, with the show starting at 10:30 a.m., hosted by Miss Manti with Miss 4th of July reading descriptions.

Get ready for the booths to open at the park at 11 a.m. Also from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., games will begin in one-half hour increments beginning with foot races, threelegged race, horseshoe tournament, potato sack race, candy scramble, money in the hay, egg toss and greased pole contest.

At 5 p.m., the Heritage Homerun Derby will be held at the Manti High School Ballfield.

Dozens of Rat Fink artists help to infuse the Rat Fink Reunion with a unique level of energy, creativity and fun. There is certainly no other event that brings so many Rat Fink fans together to share their common interest!

The reunion will begin Thursday, May 31, and end on June 2 and music will be provided throughout

by JP Kennedy, the official Rat Fink DJ. On May 31, at 1 p.m., the Rat Fink artists will be available to create special items for people. Visitors are encouraged to come see what the artists brought this year and meet and greet the artists, shop in the Rat Fink Store, tour the Rat Fink Museum or enjoy one of the limited tours of the Roth residence.

A special attraction is expected, and only visitors will discover what is coming. Banana splits will be available at 8:30 p.m., then the store will close at 9 p.m., until morning.

Fish hatchery welcomes visitors daily Anyone who likes fishing and plans to go this summer, needs to know there is a pretty good chance the fish they catch may have come from the Fountain Green State Fish Hatchery located northwest of Fountain Green at 1600 West Fish Hatchery Road.

The hatchery has thousands and thousands of fish swimming in tanks just waiting as they grow. It is truly fascinating to watch the fish in their various stages of growth.

Raising fish is a year-round project and always in demand because most reservoir fisheries are heavily used and not able to sustain themselves through natural recruitment or reproduction of the fish in the pond.

So the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has implemented a management program dependent on stocking hatchery-reared fish statewide. The Fountain Green facility is just one of the division’s hatcheries.

Utah’s fish species close up and a sense of the work that must go into stocking Utah’s lakes and streams.

To grow healthy fish requires clean water and one of the things Fountain Green is well-known for is its clean, pure water. The water comes from an artesian spring that flows from the base of the San Pitch Mountain range known as “The Big Springs.”

This spring is the source of water for the hatchery and is channeled through multiple tanks where the fish grow and are separated by size.

The Fountain Green hatchery raises 1,000,000 fish or about 180,000 pounds of trout yearly. Species include Rainbow, Cutthroat and Tiger Trout. The fish raised here are used to stock primarily the lakes and reservoirs in the region along with other waters throughout the state.

Visitors are welcome to drop in between the hours of 8 a.m.-4 p.m., seven days a week including holidays.

When traveling on Highway 132 between Nephi and Fountain Green, watch for the signs just north of Fountain Green.

Top-notch golf courses call Sanpete home Sanpete County is the home of two top-notch golf courses. East of Sterling in Palisade State Park is the Palisade Golf Course. Southeast of Fairview, golfers will find Skyline Mountain Resort Golf Course. Both are unique and each have their challenges.

Palisade The Palisade 18-hole, par-72 golf course measures 6,360 yards from the back tee markers but plays longer because all the par-5s play uphill. However, the golf course will challenge even the most advanced player because of the difficulties encountered around the greens.

The mountain layout has an elevation change of 230 feet from 5,885 feet at the base to 6,115 at the top.

Though it’s expansive undulating greens are truly a test, the greatest challenge may be signature hole number 4. This 179-yard par-3 has an elevation drop of 70 feet and requires golfers to carry the ball over a canyon, and land it precisely on the green. A ball hit too long will hit into the mountain behind the green and ricochet anywhere.

On the other hand, a ball hit too short will certainly come to rest in the canyon below. The Salt Lake Tribune has likened this hole to the famous 12th at Augusta National and the Deseret News had it on its “Best Holes” list for 2005.

Clubhouse amenities include golf shop, restaurant, club rental, clothing, equipment, and accessories, food and beverages, private and group lessons, driving range, and cart rental. Tee times may be made seven days in advance.

Views and vistas of the natural surrounding are stunning. Many golfers use their cameras as much as their clubs. In addition to golf, Palisade State Park next door offers boating, camping, fishing, hiking, off-highway vehicle access, and a variety of other activities.

Fairview Museum of History, Art an often missed treasure The Fairview Museum is one of Utah’s jewels.

Unfortunately, though, it is often missed by visitors to Sanpete County. The museum has two main buildings, the Heritage and Horizon buildings and grounds located at 85 North 100 East.

Heritage The Heritage Building is a former school built in 1900, where visitors can explore room after room of displays on two floors. There are thousands of historical artifacts, and over 100 pieces or art created by world-renowned sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks, which Dr. Fairbanks donated to the museum.

Fairbanks sculptures are displayed world-wide, many in Washington D.C. He also sculpted many larger-than-life size works representing major events in the history of the LDS Church.

Many of the rooms in the Heritage building display settings from the 1800s; a sitting room including

furniture, knick-knacks, and piano; a fully furnished bedroom; a complete kitchen; and one unusual room shows an 1800s dentist office (try not to wince when you see it).

Horizon The more contemporary Horizon building houses regional art, historical displays such as the Blackhawk Indian War, a large Clark Bronson bronze collection, a historical and genealogical library, and the center piece, an enormous mammoth skeleton that was discovered just 13 miles from Fairview.

Also for viewing is a geological display, and a gorgeous shell collection. Another unusual display is the history of turkeys in the region, starting with how they were used by the Native American culture.

Fairview Pioneer Days extends from July 14-28 Prepare now for the 34rd Annual Demolition Derby and all the other events in Fairview. Bundled event ticket packets containing tickets to all four Fairview Pioneer Days events go on sale June 12-13, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at Fairview City Hall, 85 South State. Bundles must be purchased in person at city hall.

Each bundle of tickets includes admission for one person to each of the following four events: Kids Rodeo on July 20; Main Rodeo on July 21, ATV Rodeo on July 23; and the 34th Annual Demolition Derby on July 24.

Those persons who want to only buy tickets for the demolition derby must wait until Saturday, June 30, when those tickets go on sale starting at 9 a.m., at the rodeo grounds, 350 South 85 East. Every person attending the event, including babies in arms, is required to have a ticket.

Liberal Hall museum spurred Utah statehood In 1874 a group of Mt. Pleasant citizens who were disenchanted with the Mormon faith worked together to construct a building for their own religious and social activities, which is now known as Liberal Hall.

A year later, Presbyterian Minister Duncan McMillan, established a congregation and missionary school at Liberal Hall, which became the base of operations for a network of missionary schools in the territory and the foundation of Wasatch Academy.

Located at 67 West Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Liberal Hall is significant in the history of both Sanpete County and Mt. Pleasant. It is the original Wasatch Academy schoolhouse.

In the 1990s, Wasatch Academy acquired ownership of Liberal Hall, but was unable to use the building due to its deteriorated condition. With the help of Certified Local grants, Wasatch Academy undertook

a total building rehabilitation, even pursuing a major capital-campaign.

Liberal Hall has been carefully restored as a major landmark on Mt. Pleasant’s Main Street and serves as the museum and cultural center for Wasatch Academy.

In 2018, Liberal Hall Museum received the Best of State award, for the best Historical Heritage Site.

In addition Liberal Hall/Wasatch Academy has been recognized as the birthplace of secondary education in the state of Utah and was a decisive factor for Utah being granted statehood.

This historical heritage site represents the fact that in founding Wasatch Academy, Rev. McMillan set in motion a series of events that led directly to President Cleveland making the executive decision that this school and the other missionary schools that McMillan founded provided sufficient educational foundation for the federal government to grant statehood to Utah Territory.

Fun all summer at Spring City’s events Spring City is home to several events this summer. Heritage Day returns, the Fourth Annual Pet Show runs in town, Pioneer Day celebrations, Bluegrass Festival, Plein Air Art Competition and artist studio tours.

Heritage Day Heritage Day celebrations actually start on Friday night, May 25, from 5 — 8 p.m., when the sneak peek at antiques and original paintings that go on sale Saturday morning, takes place in the Spring City Community Center (SCCC), 45 South 100 East. There is an entry fee.

Then events continue all day long on Saturday, May 26, starting at 8 a.m., with breakfast and coffee at the SCCC, 45 South 100 East, A bake sale will take place at 8:30 a.m., at the Main Street Museum, 46 North Main. The Main Street Museum houses most of the historical records for research in Spring City. It is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and by appointment. History comes alive during Mormon Miracle Pageant Travelers seeking quiet relaxation and historical reflection may come to Manti to spend a night or two at quaint bed and breakfasts, or tour the grounds of the historic Manti LDS Temple, built in 1888.

But in June of each year, Manti takes on new life and excitement when the Manti LDS Temple grounds turn into a giant stage, larger than a football field, for the Mormon Miracle Pageant.

The town truly comes alive as a cast of over 900 depict with dance, music and drama, a unique production for a large audience seated under a canopy of stars.

The pageant runs for eight nights, June 14-16, 19-23 with no performance on Sunday or Monday. Admission is free. Gates open each night at 6 p.m., and the pageant begins at 9:30 p.m. This year marks the 52nd yearly presentation of the pageant.

Each year, the pageant retells the account of the resurrected Jesus Christ visiting the people on the American continents. The dramatization includes Christ healing and teaching the people, as well as blessing the children, just as he did in Jerusalem.

Then time fast-forwards to the 1800s, when farm boy Joseph Smith received and later translated the record of this ancient American people.

The record is known today as the Book of Mormon.

Finally, the presentation concludes with the story of a fictional couple searching for religious truth and enlightenment and the joy they find upon discovering that family 48

It was also called South Gunnison or Twin Town, but when the town was incorporated in 1907, the residents chose the more dignified name of Centerfield because of the community’s central location.

Centerfield is an 1860s offshoot of Gunnison, that evolved two miles south on U.S. Highway 89. Gunnison Field or Gunnison South was a natural site for farmers who worked small “squatters rights” plots of about five acres with oxen and hand plows.

After the Indian troubles subsided, log and adobe houses began to appear. A late 1876 petition to ‘build a school convenient to our location’ was an early sign of independence from the mother colony.

In 1882 a log cabin was built to serve as school, church and social hall. The 1886-87 church was built of stone and a front tower was added in 1897. Community spirit was strong by that time, and Canute Peterson chose a committee of four who named the place for its location in the fields between Gunnison and Axtell.

42nd Annual Scandinavian Days returns to Ephraim Ephraim City welcomes the annual Scandinavian Heritage Festival as it returns again for the 42nd year on Friday and Saturday, May 25-26, Memorial Weekend. The festival includes two full days of music, entertainment, crafts, arts, demonstrations, speakers, stories, food, vendors, sports, a car show, tours, a parade and fireworks.

Visitors from all around come to enjoy the traditional festivities.

About 650,000 Utahns trace their ancestry to Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. Many of those living in Sanpete are descended from 19th Century Scandinavian converts to the LDS Church.

One of the best recommendations for visitors is to seek out the information booth located at 150 East 100 North, pick up an event guide and map. They will help to answer the many questions about the festival.

Pioneer reenactments The festival begins Friday, May 25, at 9 a.m. when the Pioneer Heritage Company will begin showing festival goers how the pioneers lived, worked and played. Come to Snow College, 100 East 100 North, for two days of reenactments that should give modern day folk a glimpse into the pioneer way of life.

See how pioneers cooked historic Scandinavian recipes over an open fire. Then, stick around for demonstrations on period sewing, woodworking, and listen to some good old-fashioned pioneer storytelling.

The kids should have fun participating in pioneer children’s games and activities. The reenactments

and demonstrations go from 9 a.m.6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Heritage Conference Beginning at 10 a.m., Friday, the Scandinavian Heritage Conference will take place in the auditorium of the Snow College Huntsman Library, 150 East College Ave. The conference gives participants an opportunity to learn about and reflect on Scandinavian and pioneer influences in the lives of early settlers of Ephraim and the Sanpete Valley and are particularly interesting for those with Scandinavian or other pioneer ancestors.

The conference this year will feature speakers at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The speakers have not yet been announced. It is a free education event.

Quilt Expo Also beginning at 10 a.m., Friday, is the Scandinavian Heritage Festival’s Quilt Expo. It takes place upstairs in the Ephraim Co-op Building, 96 North Main Street, on Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The expo includes quilts from local artists, particularly quilts that exemplify Ephraim’s Scandinavian or pioneer heritage and Mormon pioneer handicraft as kept alive by today’s aficionados.

A patchwork of quilts is expected to show up at the Scandinavian Festival Quilt Show; hand sewn, machine sewn, appliqued, pieced or perhaps even antique.

Many quilters are people who like to sit down, be with others and work together on puzzles, said quilt show coordinator Marcia Christensen.

“We’ve always said quilting is kind

of crazy, you take some nice material and take it apart into pieces, and then you put it back together again.”

Local quilting groups, like Mountain Valley Quilting Group in Gunnison, Horseshoe Mountain and Stitchin’ Sisters groups in Ephraim, and Quilt Keepers in Wales, may contribute quilts to the show, but others are encouraged to bring their works in as well.

Antique quilts, that may have been in the family for years, are also welcome as are quilts by young or first-time quilters, and quilted projects other than blankets. But tied or kit quilts are not encouraged, Christensen said.

The show will not be judged, but visitors may vote for their favorite quilts.

To show a quilt, bring it to the co-op between 1 p.m., Wednesday May 23 and 12 noon on Thursday, May 24. Quilt show organizers will attempt to show all works brought in depending on available space. For more information or to enter a quilt, call Marcia Christensen at (435) 283-2212.

in high esteem because of their ability to spin tales of adventure, romance, and war providing a welcome diversion from everyday tasks. Eager listeners stared into the flames while images of magical conquests swept through their minds and inflamed their imaginations.

Over time, electronic entertainments seem to have shuffled storytellers off to the pages of history books, except for special events such as Ephraim’s Scandinavian Heritage Festival.

On Friday and Saturday afternoon, storytellers will draw on the old and cherished tradition of storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, as storytelling has expanded to include pioneer stories and other folktales from various tellers who love the craft.

Dinner — Fireworks The Little Gourmet Scandinavian Dinner will be served Friday from 6-8 p.m., at the Greenwood Student Center at Snow College. A minimum of 300 hungry souls will be fed. No reservations are required but there is a fee.

Come experience a Scandinavian dinner of epic proportions, literally a smorgasbord, a buffet-style meal that originated in Sweden. A feast like this may require a second stomach.

There will be a fireworks show after dinner or at dusk Friday night which can be viewed from outside the Greenwood Student Center.

Saturday, May 26 The annual Fun Run, 5k, 10k, Half marathon race will begin the fun-filled day with registration starting at 6 a.m., at 50 East 100 North. Races begin at 6:30 a.m.

To enliven the competition, the Ephraim Youth City Council may add a vibrant twist to the Fun Run called “Color Me Viking.” At participants’ request, runners could be coated with powdered paint in Scandinavian colors and end the race in “rad” style.

There are a lot of events this day so be sure to start the day off with an appetizing breakfast hosted by the Lions Club. It is the Annual Aebleskiver breakfast, served from 8-10 a.m., in a pavilion located in the parking lot east of the Ephraim Co-op, 96 North Main Street.

Throughout this eventful day, there will be lots of entertainment, good food, bus tours, and activities for children and much, much more.

Most entertainment events take place on the Snow College Main Stage or on the Heritage Plaza stage.

Grand Parade One of the Scandinavian Heritage Festival’s highlights is the annual parade, which will take place this year beginning at 10 a.m. Due to construction on Snow College campus, the route may have changed, another good reason to seek out an event guide.

Ephraim City anticipates that this year’s parade will be very fun and interesting for all participants and spectators alike. The parade will give an opportunity to reflect upon the Scandinavian heritage of this part of the country. Each year the parade is well attended with local residents as well as may visitors who come for the weekend.

Families, businesses, organizations or for that matter, anyone, may enter the parade. All appropriate family friendly entries are welcome.

A Scandinavian theme is encouraged for each entry. Candy is okay. There is no entry fee, but entries must pre-register online: www.scandinavianfestival.org/parade.

Car Show Then take a walk down memory lane and view all the original vehicles in The Original Side By Side Car Show from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. They will be parked on 100 East Street between Center and 100 North.

Bus Tours Two bus tours will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. Each tour lasts 50 – 60 minutes and participants will be on the bus the entire time. The tour will visit parts of Ephraim, including historic sites, buildings, and homes that highlight the early history of the town and its Scandinavian settlers.

Vike On A Bike The third annual “Vike on a Bike,” mountain bike race for all experience levels begins at 12 noon, Saturday, at 400 East 100 North.

There is a registration fee which includes a T-shirt and race number.

Viking bikers have four course options: family, beginner, novice, and sport. The beginning and advanced races are seven-mile courses that begin at Snow College campus and go east along Kane Valley Road, with two loops over Black Hill for the advanced rider, and an easier loop for the beginning rider.

The Family Fun Ride will be out and back on Kane Valley Road. The riders will finish back at the festival at the Noyes Building on the courses designed by Durke Gordon.

All riders are encouraged to be in the Grand Parade at 10 a.m. to promote the race and warm up their muscles. Families are encouraged to

decorate their Viking bikes.

Tennis Tournament Participate in this year’s “Scandinavian Open” Tennis Tournament on Saturday, from 1-4 p.m., at the Snow College tennis courts, 375 North 200 East. There is a fee to participate.

Manti becomes beehive of summer activities The oldest town in Sanpete County is Manti. Brigham Young sent the first settlers to Manti after he received an invitation by Ute Chief Wakara to send people down to the San Pitch area to teach the Utes how to farm. The original company of 50 pioneer families arrived in the winter of 1849.

The pioneers, whose first camp was established on what is now Temple Hill, spent that first winter enduring hardships of scant food, clothing, hostile Indians, and makeshift housing.

Settlers were forced to use wagons and dugouts for protection against the severe cold and 700 Indians camped not far away. About half of the cattle froze to death and the people were unable to get more food and supplies from Salt Lake City.

But winter was not the only problem, as spring approached the ground thawed and the pioneers were faced with hundreds of rattlesnakes. Miraculously not one of the settlers died from snakebite.

Isaac Morley, the leader of this pioneer group was given the honor of naming the town. He suggested ‘Manti’ as a good name, and so the name was adopted. Manti is a town mentioned in the Book of Mormon.

Five big events Five big summer events take place in Manti each year. The Annual Rat Fink Reunion, Mormon Miracle Pageant, Independence Day, Manti ATV Ride, and the Sanpete County Fair.

Rat Fink Manti is home to the famous Rat Fink Museum, featuring displays of the works of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, creator of the Rat Fink characters and the cool, unique cars he built.

The Rat Fink Artists come from all over to show off their talents and for custom pin striping on customer items. There is always music, food and live entertainment.

Mormon Miracle Pageant The annual Mormon Miracle Pageant is scheduled for June 14-16 and 19-23, on the hillside on south side of the Manti LDS Temple. The temple sits high on the hill, overlooking the city and can be seen throughout the valley when lit. The pageant is free to attend. Gates open at 6 p.m., and the pageant begins at 9:30 p.m.

Attendees are advised to arrive early for optimum first-come seating or to select room on the grass. Bring a sweater or blanket. Be prepared in case of inclement weather.

Concessions will be for sale in the area and there are some pre-pageant performances on a stage west of the seating area, along with other interesting activities.

Independence Day Manti celebrates the nation’s birthday Wednesday, July 4, with Ring Out for Freedom, from 6 to 7 a.m., at Manti American Legion

Hall, 173 South Main. Everyone is welcome to come ring the bell in celebration.

Activities include 5K runs, American Legion breakfast, bike ride, patriotic program with flag ceremony, kids fashion show, vendor and food booths, races, and contests in the park, free swimming at the Aquatic Center, tennis and baseball matches, a parade in the evening followed by entertainment and fireworks.

Manti ATV Ride The Arapeen OHV Trail System is one of the most scenic mountain trails in Utah, as such, the annual Manti ATV Ride presents a great opportunity for family and friends to explore the system during a three day ride, Aug. 16-18. The ride begins at Manti City Park, 200 North 400 West. Riders must register in advance and provide own vehicles. Sanpete County Fair This year Sanpete County will hold the annual fair Aug. 16-25, at the fairgrounds located on the north end of town, complete with two weeks of fun and activities. By then gardeners and crafters have had time to grow and create many works of art.

Displays of all sorts, a rodeo, the ever-popular demolition derby, animals of all descriptions, cowboy poetry, ATV barrel race, and livestock shows are included in a full schedule of fun.

Tractors will also be on display, firemen will be challenged, horse pull contests, a car show and mammoth parade. Don’t miss Fun on the Farm for little ones, the midway carnival rides, food, games and entertainment.

Its all fun during Lamb Days July 13-21 Visitors drive east through Salt Creek Canyon to enter the Sanpete Valley from Nephi. Once they arrive on the east end of the canyon those traveler’s will encounter historic Fountain Green.

During the 1850s the area now known as Fountain Green was just a popular campground for Salt Creek and San Pitch travelers. The campground located just below the Divide and Mt. Nebo had a green fountain called “Big Springs,” which was second to no other spring in the Sanpete Valley.

Over time the Johnson’s and other families from Santaquin in Utah Valley settled the area and named it Fountain Green.

Each July, Fountain Green throws a big celebration known as Lamb Days. The name is fitting due to the historic nature of the area where raising sheep was a huge industry and is still an ongoing way of life for some.

Lamb Days draws people from all over and the annual activities include: co-ed softball tournaments, entertainment, youth lamb show and judging, mutton and sourdough dinner, youth talent show, fun run, chuck wagon breakfast, craft fair, parade, and fireworks.

Lamb Days events This year the events get started with a live play on stage Friday and Saturday, July 13-14, in the Fountain Green Community Theatre, 60 South State. The Friday show will be at 7 p.m. and on Saturday there will be two showings. One at 5 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. Attendees to the performances will also get the chance to visit a quilt show next door in the dance hall.

Then on Tuesday through Thursday, July 17-19, the annual Co-ed Softball Tournament will take place. Participants must be current or past residents only. Sign up at Fountain Green City Hall, 260 West 100 North; or at the General Store, 84 South State.

On Friday and Saturday, July 20-21, the men’s solfball tournament will take place. To enter teams, contact Ryan Johnson (435) 262-6187.

Also on Friday, July 20, at Noon, there will be a youth lamb show and judging at Fountain Green Park, 300 West Center.

Then from 5 to 8 p.m., the annual lamb and sourdough dinner will be available.

Historic home tours on Heritage Day The annual Spring City Heritage Day, hosted by Friends of Spring City, takes place Friday night, May 25, through Saturday, May 26 and among the many events of the day, a special tour takes place.

The tour includes many of the towns charming, mid-19th Century pioneer homes and buildings. Heritage Day includes mini concert performances, an art auction, antique sale, handcrafted wares, breakfast and lunch.

Spring City leads the way in historic preservation and restoration in Utah. The entire town was designated a national historic district in the late 1970s, and since that time, over 60 local historical structures have been carefully and lovingly restored. Today, Spring City is widely considered the best preserved example of a 19th Century Pioneer village in the entire country.

This preservation includes the beautiful Old Spring City School, which, after nearly 40 years of persistent effort, was rededicated in 2017. The renovated building is now known as the Spring City Community Center (SCCC), 45 South 100 East, Spring City.

SCCC has become the crowning jewel of Spring

City’s restoration efforts. It will be open all day to the public. Inside the building is a Daughter Of Utah Pioneers Museum (DUP), space for events, a large ballroom for receptions and community programs and Spring City Hall offices.

Friday, May 25 From 5-8 p.m., sneak a peek at the antiques and original paintings that will go on sale Saturday morning.

Saturday, May 26 Breakfast will be served in the city park, behind the SCCC, from 8-10 a.m. Coffee will be available until 11 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at the historic Spring City LDS Chapel, 164 South Main Street.
