Summertime Means
Playtime
My editorial team and I are convinced the reason Utah Valley is known as “Happy Valleyâ€? is because of the plethora of great ways you can “play.â€? We have it all. No matter what you enjoy (theater, camping, roller blading, river tubing, concerts, hiking, biking, dirt biking‌) there is literally something for everyone along the Wasatch Front. The most difficult part of creating PLAY every year is narrowing down the options for what to write about! Because of the wide array of summer fun available all around the Valley, this year, we decided to keep sharing ideas all summer long with extra online content. Please go to www.heraldextra.com and check out UtahAdventurer.com, Savvy Shopper, and MomClick all season. They will be filled with ideas, downloadable activities, new articles, coupons and more to help you and your family get the most out of the summer. Additionally at www.heraldextra.com/summerofgiveaways we will be giving away amazing prizes each week through August to give more of our readers the chance to have a blast this summer. We have Lagoon, Sundance lift and theater passes, Cowabunga Bay, the Owlz, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Scera Shell Theater V.I.P. seats and more!
We created PLAY to fit in your glove compartment for easy convenient ideas on the go all season for every age and interest. We hope you enjoy the ideas and tips and have a blast as you “play each and every warm delicious day of summer. Sincerely, Michele Bates Executive Editor

Warm weather means it’s time to pump up the flat tires, dust off the handlebars, secure the helmets, hook up the trailer and enjoy a family bike ride. Here are a few of our favorite family-friendly bike paths.
Provo Canyon Trail. This trail is perfect for all ages and abilities. Start at Nunn’s Park, just below Bridal Veil Falls, and bike up the canyon for about 2 miles to Vivian Park. Stop, play, rest, have lunch, then bike back down to Nunn’s Park for a total of 4 miles. Sundance. For a family with older children, take a trip up to Sundance and enjoy some mountain biking. Ride the chair lift up and enjoy the mountain terrain all the way down. Hobble Creek Canyon (Springville). Start at the Hobble Creek Golf Course parking lot and bike the paved path through a windy, hilly area and down the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon into Springville for a 4-mile, mostly downhill, ride.
Jordan River Parkway. This 7.5-mile, paved trail is great for beginners. For a nice 10-mile roundtrip ride, catch the trail at Main Street in Lehi (drive west through Lehi on Main Street until you see the trail about 100 yards east of the river, just after leaving town); or, catch the trail from Willow Park in Lehi (9800 W. 8470 North). Ride north to the Jordan Narrows turnaround and back, which takes you through the Thanksgiving Point Golf Course. There is a nice picnic area at Willow Park. Bike around town. Bike, instead of drive, your way to the library, ball games, hamburger stops, or the park. For more family-friendly, paved Utah biking trails and routes, see www.utahmountainbiking.com.
Tips for a great family bike ride Wear helmets. Wear your helmet every time you ride, and expect your kids to do the same. Do make sure helmets fit comfortably. Ponytails and hair accessories can lead to headaches for kids. Make sure kids’ helmets are secure but not tight and that the straps are comfortable. Dress weather-appropriate and comfortably. Dress kids in layers. Remember that even on cold days kids will get warm as they bike. Take a backpack or carrier for carrying jackets, water and other possible necessities. Pack smart. When taking kids on a bike ride, remember to bring water, a small bag for trash, a small first-aid kit with bandages and triple antibiotic ointment for taking care of minor spills or blisters, snacks (tired kids can quickly get rejuvenated with fruit snacks and crackers), a bike pump, your camera and a cell phone. Keep it fun. Don’t plan a 10-mile bike ride for your 6-year-old’s first family bike trip. Family biking should be comfortable, sociable and not too difficult. You can have them train for triathlons when they’re a little older.

Trail Traversing
Utah Valley is overflowing with stunning hiking trails in varying degrees of difficulty, great to customize outdoor adventures for the entire family. Living in Payson, I’m quite fond of the short yet scenic hike to the Grotto. Lush foliage found up Payson Canyon make this short jaunt a great little family outing. And if you dare dip your feet in the frigid water, it’s a fun place to cool off from a hike-filled day. If you’re looking to add some new locations to your hiking map, consider one of these Utah Valley trails. Or for even more detailed hiking options, log on to www.utahadventurer.com. Pleasant Grove Area
Battle Creek — At the end of Battle Creek Drive (200 South) in Pleasant Grove, you’ll find the trailhead for the Battle Creek Canyon hike. This picturesque hike will take you past a waterfall and can be a good choice for families hiking with children.
American Fork Area
Tibble Fork Trail — This steep climb begins near the dam at Tibble Fork Reservoir. The 6-mile hike will take you past mountain meadows and long stretches of Aspen trees. Timpooneke Trail on Mount Timpanogos — Located in the Timpooneke campground in American Fork Canyon, the trail is 7.5 miles to the breathtaking views of Emerald Lake. Travel 3 miles longer to the summit of Timpanogos. Silver Lake — Follow this trail to the end for a rewarding view of Silver Lake and Mount Timpanogos. For this hike, you’ll drive to Tibble Fork Reservoir in American Fork Canyon, following the road toward the Granite Flats Campground. Shortly after a horsetransfer area, you will see a dirt road to the right. The dirt road has signs to direct you to Silver Lake Flat Reservoir, where there is a parking lot and trailhead for the hike.
Provo Area
Big Springs Trail — Head up the South Fork turnoff to Provo Canyon. From the turnoff at Vivian Park, you’ll travel 2 miles to a dirt road. From there you’ll see the trailhead for the 4-mile hike that takes you to the top of Rock Canyon, joining the Rock Canyon Trail. Rock Canyon Trail -— This is a great trail for beginning hikers because of its well-marked trail and simple upward slope. Beginning at the end of North
Temple Drive in Provo, the 6-mile trail ends at Rock Canyon Campground on Squaw Peak Road. Stewart Cascades Trail — This family-friendly hike is a 2-mile trail to Stewart Falls. Start on the hike near the BYU Aspen Grove Camp located on the Provo Canyon North Fork Road. “Y Mountain — While many people make the pilgrimage to the rock Y formation on the Provo mountain, many people don’t realize that the trail actually will take you up past the Y to a summit on the top. The mountain trail provides a great view of the valley. Head east on 850 North to the foothills, then travel north to the parking lot. Follow the dirt road to the trailhead.
South County Area
Grotto Trail — This easy, short trail in Payson Canyon is perfect for especially hot summer days. Why? The reward is an ice cold destination. The Grotto’s waterfall is a refreshing playground for the whole family. Mt. Loafer Trail — Also beginning in Payson, this trail is a great moderate 11-mile roundtrip day hike taking you through scenic Mt. Nebo and on to Santaquin Peak. Hobble Creek Canyon — Located about 10 miles up Hobble Creek Canyon in Springville, this easy trail provides great vistas of the Utah Valley. — Jennifer Durrant

Floating Along For paddlers looking for a quick trip close to home, the Provo River provides beautiful scenery and a fun, easy ride. The river flows 17 miles through Provo Canyon from Deer Creek Reservoir to Utah Lake. The river is divided into three sections for runs ranging from four miles to nine miles. The rapids range from Class I to Class IV (near Bridal Veil Falls), depending on the time of year. My husband, Mike, and I put in our two-person inflatable kayak just below the Deer Creek Dam to run the first six-mile section from Deer Creek to Upper Division Dam, just below Vivian Park. A paved road heads off from the highway on the right just below Deer Creek Dam. Here you can park and easily access the river. The ride starts out slow. This is a good time to perfect your steering and get a feel for the river. I let Mike paddle as I relaxed and enjoyed the scenery. The wooded river banks hide the sights and sounds of the highway. The towering canyon walls provide the grand vistas. The trickiest steering on this section of the river comes at two railroad bridges. The water here is fairly

fast and you have to avoid several posts. This late in the year there are several shallow spots to watch out for. Once we had to get out of the boat and carry it several yards to a deeper spot. We were glad to be wearing sturdy shoes with grip that we didn’t mind getting wet. The river alternates with the bends between slow peaceful spots and exciting rapids. The evening we went, we shared to river with a half dozen fly fishermen. We reached the end of the line about a mile from our destination at Vivian Park when the bottom of our raft popped a seam on a sharp rock. I wasn’t as good at avoiding them as my husband. Watching out for rocks likely wouldn’t be as big of a problem earlier in the year when the river is deeper. The Utah Valley Visitor’s Bureau names May and June as the best times to run the Provo in Provo Canyon. Leaving our kayak on the bank, we followed the river, then the road to where our car was parked at Vivian
Park. Again we were thankful for our sturdy shoes. Without the hike, it would have taken about 90 minutes to run the first section of the river. The second section starts near Vivian Park at Upper Division Dam and goes four miles to Murdock Division Dam. This section is shorter, but with more rapids. The trickiest part of this run is a section called “the hole” where Bridal Veil Falls runs into the river. The last stretch starts at Murdock Division Dam and runs to Utah Lake. According to the Utah Valley Visitor’s Bureau, during the hottest summer months this section may be dry. No permits are required to run the river, but life jackets are. The river is a good run for beginners and even navigable in tubes. High Country Rafting, located next to Vivian Park, provides rentals and guided river tours. Summer HappyCampers It was enlightening to me as a Mom to realize that summer camps didn’t always have to be about sports or camping. In Utah Valley there is practically a summer camp for all ages and interests. There are camps for thespians, vocal performers, crafters, novice astronomers, rock climbers, and much, much more. After six years in Utah Valley and all ages of kids I thought I had heard of almost everything until last week when a friend told me about UVU’s Young Entrepreneurs Start-up Camp (YES Camp) hosted by the Woodbury School of Business. In the eight days of camp students master the basics of creating a new business and work in teams to prepare a real business for launch. Teamwork with like-minded kids in the spirit of fun and learning sounds like a great camp for a lot of teenagers I know. In addition, all students will earn three upper-division, transferable college credits through UVU Concurrent Enrollment. Excellent from a parent’s perspective. Jessica Olsen, a graduate of American Fork High School and attendee of the 2012 YES Camp, received her first job offer on the last day of the camp and was flown to Arizona to represent the company at a
convention only a week after turning 18 years old. “I can’t even tell you how valuable the camp has been for my career,” Olsen says. So, if your kid isn’t too interested in basketball, can’t sing on key to save their life, and had their first successful lemonade stand at age 7, this camp might be the perfect fit. The camp will be held June 12-21(weekdays only), at UVU. Students can register for the camp at yescamp2013.eventbrite.com. If this isn’t the right fit check out the following local businesses, typically under the “Education” section, for a wide variety of additional camps that might be perfect for your little tyke: SCERA Center for the Arts, www.scera.org Hale Center Theater Orem, www.haletheater .org Creativity Art Studio, www.creativityartstudio.com Hogle Zoo, www.hoglezoo.com Living Planet Aquarium, www.thelivingplanet.com Clark Planetarium, www.clarkplanetarium.com The Quarry, www.quarryclimbing.com

Come and Stay
My kids love a good rainy day because in Utah Valley there’s a lot of terrific activities and fun to be had indoors as well as out. Since there are bound to be a few days not worthy of going outside this summer we thought it would be beneficial to create an idea list for Moms in desperate need of getting the wiggles out of their kids in a safe
and enjoyable environment. We’ve made sure each category has options for the whole of Utah Valley to get you out and on your way even faster when you’re worried your living room might not make it through another attempt at couch gymnastics. The Roller Rink: There are a few of these in Utah Valley and all of them are a blast. Even if your kids can’t roller skate rinks have scooters to rent that are easy for every age and do a great job of tuckering out even the most rowdy tot after a few hours of lights, music and fun. Arcades and Bowling: There is an arcade or bowling alley within driving distance of all our readers whether it is in North County with places like Boondocks and the Lehi Fun Center (Trafalga) or Provo with the Beach Resort in Riverwoods or Nickelcade. A pocket full of change can lead to hours of fun for kids of all ages. City Recreation Centers: Almost everyone in

Utah Valley has an amazing Rec Center within close driving distance of their house. Many of them have amazing indoor water parks with slides and even rock walls, basketball and racquetball courts, tumbling areas, classes, and even daycare for worn out moms. Movie Theater: It’s an oldie but a goodie. Throughout the summer there are loads of great movies for every taste. For those with cost concerns don’t forget places like the discount movie theaters and even the drive-in. You can fit a lot of kids and cheap homemade treats into one car. Museums: There are some wellknown museums like Thanksgiving Point’s Dinosaur Museum but there are some little known gems out there in the valley. Two great examples are the Lehi Hutchins Museum, which offers family deals that are exceptionally affordable, and the Bean Museum in Provo that is free to the public. Take a minute or two to Google museums in your area and prepare to be amazed at how many you didn’t even know existed. Make it a fun day of learning for you and your kids.
There are of course a lot more options out there. If one of these isn’t seeming to be a good fit be sure to check out www.utahadventurer.com all summer for updated ideas and stories that will help your family find the fun on a rainy day. — Michele Bates

Take a soak at one of Mother Nature’s hot tubs: Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe. With water that comes out of the ground at 168 degrees and 200 gallons a minute, Monroe’s hot springs create a hot, enjoyable alternative to typical water activities.
Soak it in The water is rich in calcium, magnesium and iron. Soaking in it relaxes warm, achy muscles. I could swear it softened my skin, too. Millions of years old, the spring flow has created a mile-long mound of mineral buildup that is 200 feet deep and 200 feet wide. The natural minerals form unique, red rock formations that serve as the backdrop for the cascading water pools. Families, the elderly, those with disabilities, hippies — everyone is welcome at Mystic Hot Springs. Ginsburg describes his hot springs business as “funky, not fancy.” And I would add “friendly.” We met

Owner Mike Ginsburg’s friendly, laid-back personality matches the warm ambience of the hot springs. Ginsburg keeps the hot springs open yearround, 24 hours a day. Ginsburg invites visitors to watch the sunset, see the moon rise, or enjoy a meteor show — all from the hillside of the hot springs. Ginsburg channels the hot water from its natural source to eight tubs and two larger pools. All of the pools and tubs are shallow enough for children to enjoy. The tubs closest to the source are warmest. All of the tubs offer panoramic views of the Monroe Valley and the Mystic Hot Springs fish pond.

several Utah residents who travel to the hot springs each month for a soak. Ginsburg averages 25-50 visitors daily. The day my children and I attended we met a couple from Torrey. They travel over an hour to come at least twice a month to relax and renew. We also shared the pool with a local Monroe resident who comes once or twice a week with his daughter who has Down syndrome to help her relax and enjoy the water. There’s something about being out in nature, feeling the warm and soothing water, and enjoying the peaceful views that adds to the overall relaxation of the experience. If you go, bring towels, your camera, and flip flops or water shoes. There are changing rooms and common showers available for use, but we opted to drive the 15 minutes to our Richfield hotel to shower and change. Only a few minutes off Highway 89, Mystic Hot Springs is a family-friendly, must-do adventure. Soak all day for only $7.50 per person. Camping, RV sites and cabin rentals also are available for $15-$30 per person. Facilities are down-to-earth, friendly and clean. Tubs are cleaned daily; pools are cleaned weekly. For more information, visit www.mystichotsprings.com. Mystic Hot Springs is located at 475 E. 100 North in Monroe. The phone number is (435) 527-3286. — Leslie Kawai, UtahAdventurer.com

Summertime adventures often call for extremes. The perfect place for extremes in Utah is just a few hours south. Southern Utah is the best place to enjoy extreme sun … make that extreme heat … as well as extreme adventure. Whether heading south to enjoy the stunning grandeur of Utah’s National Parks, traverse the slot canyons of the Kanab area, treating the family to the quality theatrical productions, or just basking in that glorious sun poolside, Southern Utah offers something for everyone. Having lived in St. George for nearly a decade, I’m always happy to toss out my favorite places for families to dine, play and relax.
Dine
Southern Utah has a great selection of restaurants, whether grabbing a bite before a hiking adventure, enjoying a leisurely dinner after a matinee or indulging in a gourmet breakfast. Pastry Pub, Cedar City – Walking distance from the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Milt’s Steakhouse, Cedar City – Fantastic food. The Bear Paw, St. George – My favorite place for breakfast.

Play
The play is the thing in Southern Utah and the stages are grand from the Utah Shakespeare Festival to Tuachan. Their awardwinning lineups this season, including “The Tempest,” “Anything Goes,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Mary Poppins” and more, can be found on their websites at www.bard. org and www.tuacahn.org. Don’t forget all the play in the great outdoors of Southern Utah, too. Hiking, biking, swimming, boating, 4-wheeling, and so much more. Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Snow Canyon and Cedar Breaks are but a few of the incredible natural wonders that surround Southern Utah – all within a short drive. Kanab, that quaint town known for being Utah’s Little Hollywood, is a great destination for outdoor adventures, too. When not exploring the rich history of big screen Westerns, you can lace up your hiking shoes and tour some of the stunning slot canyons, rock art, and even the nearby North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Dreamland Safari Tours, www.dreamlandtours.net, offers dozens of tour options from day trips to multi-day adventures. I recommend exploring the breath-taking slot canyons in the area.
Relax
