It’s warm outside and the kids are ready to get out and PLAY instead of destroy our houses. In honor of this momentous time of the year we have compiled a guide with a lot of activities meant to get you out and about this summer on a budget. Many of the items are free or very minimal charge.

We’ve included a lot of lists and outdoor games that we hope will help you fill in those moments when you just can’t think of something to do.

‌For families on a tight budget, price can quickly make the difference between a summer of fun and a summer stuck at home. The good news is, for those cashconscious individuals, not all of the fun activities Utah Valley offers in the summer are expensive, and many more are free. Whether you like to experience the outdoors and enjoy the great weather or stay inside for your fun, there’s a free or inexpensive adventure waiting just for you.

Float down the river

What better way to cool down on a hot summer day than by taking a trip down the Provo River? You can take in the gorgeous scenery free of charge if you bring your own tube, though you can always grab one from a rental agency. If you’re renting, you can even check out kayak and life jacket rentals, or potentially hiring a tour guide. Just make sure whenever you do go floating that you have a ride back up to your car!

Go fishing!

Each year, the Division of Wildlife Resources hosts a free fishing day, a perfect chance to get out there and get a great catch! June 7 is the date for this year, but if you want to grab a pole

and enjoy a few additional days on the water this summer, fishing licenses won’t set you back too much — just $26 for an adult year-long pass (age 14 and up) and $5 for a youth pass (ages 12 and 13). Find more information at wildlife.utah.gov/fishing.

Hiking and nature

With all the beautiful mountains, streams and trails surrounding Utah Valley, going hiking or being outdoors might seem like obvious answers. If you’ve never ventured out, though, it can be tricky finding the right trails for you. From beginning trails to expert adventures, kid-friendly hikes to great picnic spots, there are plenty of resources available to point you in

the right direction. The Daily Herald’s activities guide, UtahAdventurer.com, is a great resource for trails, as well as hiking tips and ideas. You can also check out wasatchhiker.com or utah. com/provo/hiking_trails.htm. The best part? Excluding an occasional entry fee, it’s all free! Check out pages 12 and 13 for a Top 10 list of local hikes, too.

Museums and more

One great way to spend the summer is checking out some of the great local museums. Brigham Young University itself has quite a few free museum options, from sports to art, animals to cultures, not to mention their Museum of Paleontology. Many of the museums are free to the public while others charge minimal fees. Check out pages 8 and 9 in this guide for a larger list of museum options.

Soak in the hot springs

Whether you want a warm place

to soak and relax or prefer a more interactive setting, Utah’s natural waters are waiting for you. You can see the beautiful red rock scenery in the soaking pools of Monroe Hot Springs or even go scuba diving and snorkeling at the Crater at the Homestead. If you head to Diamond Fork Canyon this summer, you can check out Fifth Water Springs. Or maybe you’re up for a trip to Crystal Hot Springs in Box Elder County, where you’ll find a more traditional swimming pool set up.

Water fun

If you’re not up to the natural water options of Utah’s hot springs, try taking your family to one of the many swimming pools and splash pads across the area. It’s a great way to cool down and brings countless hours of fun for little ones. Read more about those options on page 18.

KID ESSENTIALS Must-haves for any summer adventure ‌For any successful outing with kids, it’s important to be prepared.

There are all sorts of spills, accidents and demands to tend to happen when traveling with children, even just for the afternoon. Here are a few essential items that you want to have with you to ensure you have happy kids.

1. Snacks. Full kids are happy kids.

Keep granola bars, crackers, trail mix, fruit snacks and other treats that will help take the edge off hunger until the next meal.

2. First-aid kit. A small one with the basics like bandages, tripleaction ointment, anti-bacterial wipes and Tylenol. If you’re kids are prone to allergies, or require other medications, be sure and grab those vitals, too.

3. Sunscreen. Even if you put it on before you leave the house, if you’re out all day, or stay longer than expected, you’ll want to reapply.

4. Wet wipes. Not just for babies, wet wipes can be a life-saver for sticky hands and faces.

5. Water. No matter what your day’s activity, you should always have an overabundance of water on hand or in your car.

6. Extra flip-flops. Keep a cheap pair of flip-flops for a foot emergency.

Sandals can break, kids inevitably find mud puddles even in the heat of July, and that extra pair could be the difference between continuing on or packing it in.

7. Towels. Regardless of whether you’re spending the day at the pool or at the zoo, an extra beach towel or two could always come in handy for cleaning up spills, wiping down sandy feet, providing shade, and even an impromptu picnic blanket.

8. Sunglasses and/or hats. You’ve always got your shades on, so don’t forget that your little ones need eye protection from the sun, too.

Hitting the trails

Top 7 familyfriendly hikes

Whether young or old, big or small, in shape or not, there’s like a great hiking trail for you somewhere in Utah Valley.

Here are six of the top familyfriendly hiking trails in Utah Valley.

Alpine Sliding Rock

A great hike when the temps start to soar. Be prepared to get wet on this fun water slide perfect for those ages 8 and older.

Getting there: Drive north on Alpine’s Main Street, taking a left on Fort Canyon Road, which you will follow for about one mile. After crossing a small river surrounded by foliage there will be a gate on your left. This is the parking area. The hike starts from the gate.

This popular trail to the base of the falls is another great hike for those sweltering summer days.

Getting there: Heading south on I-15, take the 8th North Exit in Orem and head east for about 3.7 miles until you near the mouth of Provo Canyon.

Take the left split of the road towards Heber City on Highway 189 and travel about 3.6 miles up Provo Canyon and turn right at the turn off. Go straight through the stop sign and a parking lot is about a half mile down the road. The trail head is right on the other side of the bridge over the Provo River

1190 N Main Street #16 Springville

This easy, 4-mile trail in Provo Canyon follows a small creek through a broad valley to Big Springs, a natural spring flowing from the mountainside.

Getting there: Big Springs Park is located near the top of South Fork Canyon Road. From the mouth of Provo Canyon, travel east up Provo Canyon Road to Vivian Park (about 8 miles.)

Turn right onto South Fork Road, past Vivian Park, past Giles Ranch, Past South Fork Park, and on to Big Springs Park (approx 2.5 miles.)

few miles to where there is a meadow on the right and lots of fences. You should shortly see a large parking area on the left with rocks surrounding it.

This is the main parking but if there is room, a few better spots are further up the road. The trailhead is at the road highpoint, about 5 minutes walk further up the road. There is room for just a few cars at that location.

Canyon Nature Trail

This pleasant hike up American Fork Canyon begins at a picnic and campfire area. A great place to enjoy lunch before enjoying the trail.

Getting There: Drive 2.1 miles up American Fork Canyon on the Alpine Loop. The trailhead begins on the north side of the road just before the Timpanogos Cave Visitor’s Center.

Horsetail Falls in Alpine Canyon

Buffalo Peak via Squaw Peak Overlook Buffalo Peak is by far one of the easiest peaks to hike in Utah. Its location makes it easy to reach as well.

Getting there: Drive up Provo Canyon looking for a sign for Squaw Peak Road (near mile marker 9). Follow this narrow paved road until it splits. A sign points to the right for a city view overlook. Go left, road becomes gravel shortly after. Follow the gravel road a

DISCOVERY SPACE CENTER

This nearly 4-mile trail is a hidden gem that boasts great views of Utah Valley and the granite face of the waterfall that are arguably the most picturesque in the area.

Getting there: From Interstate 15 in Utah County, take U.S. Highway 92 exit for Alpine. At 5300 West, turn north. At the roundabout, stay on Main Street to 200 on 200 East; 200 East turns into Grove Drive. Drive to the end of it for the trailhead.

‌Want to watch the faces of your little ones light up in pure adventurous joy this summer? Take them on a train ride!

The Heber Creeper is a historic steam engine that travels through Provo Canyon from Vivian Park to Heber City. The train has special events throughout the year as well including Wild West Days, Dinosaur Days, Freedom Train and much more. Take the FrontRunner or Trax trains. If your kids are lifelong Utahns, they’re new to mass transit, so a trip on the commuter rail can be a fun new experience.

Hop on at the Provo FrontRunner Station for a trip to downtown Salt Lake or venture to the end of the line in Ogden for some fun along Historic 25th Street, have lunch, play at a park, explore the streets, then hop back on the train for home.

Visit Promontory Point. Golden Spike National Historic Site is located west of Brigham City. Ask any fourth-grader and they’ll be able to tell you all about the “Wedding of the Rails,” when the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads joined, connecting the first transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The locomotives are replicas of the originals, which were scrapped long ago, and they truly are a spectacle and the reenactment is fun to watch. ‌Back when we were kids there were no interactive video games, no Pinterest and no Skype. We didn’t have more than 100 cable channels dedicated to kids’ TV programming, Netflix, Hulu, or online streaming videos sent straight to a phone we could take everywhere. What we did have was imagination, ingenuity and each other. In an effort to get the kids outside more this year I’ve put together a list I want to share. It’s a few “old-time” games you may remember from the playground that just might keep kids busy in the backyard instead of vegged out in front of the TV. Well, at least for 10 minutes or so. Have fun!

Tag, You’re It: Whether it was regular Tag or Freeze Tag this was always a go-to game growing up. Freeze Tag was a particular favorite. If you haven’t played this version of Tag, one person is still “it,” but when they touch someone, that person is “frozen” in place. They cannot move and must stand with their feet apart. The only way they can become unfrozen is if a person crawls under their legs. Play continues until all the players are frozen.

Then the last person to be frozen is “it” for the next game.

Red Light, Green Light: One person is designated as the stoplight. The other kids line up about 20 feet away from the kid playing the “stop light.”

Facing away from the other kids, they call out “Green Light!” The other kids move toward “the stoplight” until they call out “Red Light!” and turn around quickly. Any of the kids who are caught moving must go back to the starting line. Play continues until someone

What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?: Mr. Fox starts out at one end of a field, room or designated area with his back to the group. The group at the other end then yells out “What time is it Mr. Fox?” Mr. Fox then calls out a time that is on the even hour (1 o’clock to 12 o’clock). The group then takes that many steps. When the group gets to where the fox is, but not past him, and asks the time, the fox can yell “Midnight!” The fox then turns and chases the group. Those he catches are to sit out. The last one left becomes the fox.

A variation is to allow each child who is tagged to become an honorary fox and help catch people.

Mother May I?: This one is a tad bit more complicated. Here is the break down: 1. One child serves as “Mother.” The other kids line up and face Mother about 20 feet away. Mother selects one of the children and says something like, “Susan, you may take five giant steps.” The child who was addressed then responds with, “Mother, may I?” Mother then says, “Yes, you may.”

2. Mother then addresses another child, and the game continues until one of the children reaches Mother. Whoever makes it to Mother first becomes Mom for the next round.

3. Sound simple? It is. Except that in the excitement of the game, someone is bound to take their steps without asking “Mother, may I?” When that happens Mother reminds the player of his or her manners and the player is sent back to the beginning of the line.

4. Mother can also make the game more interesting by only honoring the silly step requests — twirly steps, onefoot hops, dog steps and so on.
