The Parent Family presently resides in Payson. Jesse journeyed from Northern Maine to Utah as a teenager. He earned his Masters Degree in 2014 and has been in the automotive industry since 2005. The Parent clan is heavily involved in the Utah hockey community and love spending quality time together outdoors.

This year marks 86 years that the Lehi Round-Up has been bringing the community together. Over the years, the city has grown and evolved, but the tradition of the Round-Up has remained a constant.

This family-friendly event is cherished by both old and new residents of the city who come together to share in the community’s rich traditions. 2023 Parade Grand Marshal - Ronald V. Smith

Ronald V. Smith, who served as Lehi City’s 43rd mayor, has been named the grand marshal of the 2023 Lehi Round-Up Grand Parade.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, and travel from Wines Park to Lehi High School.

Ronald V. Smith was born in Lehi on Aug. 31, 1936, the son of Victor Webb and Deon Carter Smith. His great-grandfather, Joseph J. Smith, was the first blacksmith in Lehi.

He graduated from Lehi High School in 1954, then alternated between attending Brigham Young University and working for a few years before being called to serve in the Hawaii mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

After returning from his mission in 1958, he worked at Geneva Steel, then returned to BYU, eventually graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education. He began his career working at Skyline High School, then later transferred to the Granite School District and taught high school students.

In 1961, he married Kaye Louise Passey in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of eight children, four of whom still live in Lehi, and the

grandparents of 28 and great-grandparents of 12. Kaye passed away in 2016.

Smith has lived in Lehi for most of his life. He has served on many local committees and boards, including the Lehi CIA Rodeo Committee for 28 years, the Lehi City Planning Commission, the Lehi City Board of Adjustments, the Lehi Irrigation Company Board of Directors, the Lehi Metropolitan Water District Board of Directors and the Lehi Historical Society Board of Directors.

In 1991, at the urging of friends and neighbors, he ran for city council and won, taking office in January 1992. When Lehi Mayor Guy Cash submitted his resignation on Sept. 29, 1992, the city council appointed Smith as the city’s 43rd mayor.

Much of the work of his administration centered on the rapid growth and building boom that had come to Lehi. He assisted with the development of a Capital Improvement Plan that examined how to best handle development of future water, sewer, street and park needs.

Other accomplishments during his tenure as mayor were improved curb, gutter and sidewalk in several areas of

town and the improvement and resurfacing of city streets.

In addition to his civic service, Smith has been very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving for many years in various bishoprics, including as bishop of the Lehi 11th Ward from 1982 to 1987.

He also served as stake Young Men’s president and as a high councilor in the Lehi North Stake and as a branch president at the Provo Missionary Training Center.

2023 Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Royalty

The 86th Lehi Round-Up Rodeo is just around the corner and the 2023 Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo Royalty is ready to “Round Up Some Lehi Fun.” The new royalty was selected on Saturday, April 15, 2023, after a day of competition that included personal interviews, modeling, speeches, impromptu questions and horsemanship.

Lindsey Ivie, the daughter Chris and Michelle Ivie of Benjamin, is your Miss Lehi Round-Up Rodeo 2023. She has a love for the rich history of the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo and Celebration, which has become a treasured family tradition. Lindsey is a former Miss Pony Express Days Rodeo and Miss Spanish Fork Fiesta Days Rodeo and was also the first attendant in the 2021 Miss Lehi Round-Up Royalty.

During the past two years, she has served as a Rodeo Houston Pivot girl and, in 2022, she had the privilege of being a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo flag girl.

Lindsey is certified in equine massage and enjoys helping our equine athletes feel their best. She loves everything to do with the outdoors, including camping, hiking and trail riding with friends and family. She is also a huge hunting enthusiast.

With her passion for service, love of rodeo and ambition to better herself, Lindsey looks forward to serving as Miss Lehi Round Up Rodeo.

Emma Stowe of Taylorsville will represent the 2023 Lehi Round Up Rodeo as the first attendant. She is the daughter of Ryan and Lisa Stowe. Emma is a recent high school graduate who has a deep passion for equine health and studies.

She is currently employed at Mountain Point Equine Hospital and pursuing a veterinary technician and equine massage certificate. Her long-term goal is to become an equine physical therapist.

For the past 10 years, Emma has

enjoyed success competing in 4-H equine-related events and is currently serving as a Utah 4-H State Horse Ambassador. Emma has held the titles of Western Stampede Rodeo Queen and Summit County Fair First Attendant.

As an outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys riding dirt bikes, hunting, boating, snowboarding, teaching riding lessons to kids in her local community and volunteering at an equine therapy center for kids with disabilities. She also loves spending time with her family.

Terra Hicken was selected as the second attendant in the 2023 Lehi Round Up Rodeo Royalty. She is the daughter of Dave and Tanya Hicken of Heber City. Terra graduated

from high school with high honors in 2022 and is currently attending Utah Valley University where she is pursuing a degree in business.

Her rodeo queen titles include 2021 Mountain Valley Stampede Junior Queen, 2022 Dinosaur Round-Up Rodeo Queen and 2022 Miss Hooper Tomato Days Second Attendant.

Aside from riding horses and competing in rodeo queen pageants, Terra enjoys snowmobiling, swing dancing and swimming.

The royalty will make appearances at rodeos and other special events to promote the Lehi Round-Up Rodeo and Celebration and to educate the public and create awareness about the sport of rodeo.

Doubles Tennis Tournament

Come out and participate in our annual Round-Up Doubles Tennis Tournament. This is a fun event for ages 8th grade to adult. The tournament is set up to be a doubles match format, and there is a prize for top finishers. A free T-shirt is included for the first 30 teams to register.

The fast-paced improv comedy show ComedySportz will provide a hilarious show on Tuesday, June 20, as part of Comedy Night during the 2023 Lehi Round-Up celebration. The show will begin at 7 p.m. at Skyridge High School, 3000 N. Center, Lehi. Admission is free.

ComedySportz approaches comedy as a sport. The group has a Red Team and a Blue Team that compete throughout the show for the audience’s laughter and affection and to win points.

Come enjoy a delicious BBQ meal during this year’s Family Western BBQ on Wednesday, June 21. The cost will be $5 per plate. The BBQ starts at 4:30 p.m. and will go until 7 p.m. or when the food runs out, whichever one comes first.

Entertainment during the event will be provided by The Fab Folk. The Fab Folk are the husband-wife folk rock duo of Jake and Melissa Haws from Springville. Their music centers around tight vocal harmonies and playing a variety of folk instruments, including acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, kick drum, tambourine and cajon,

The referee takes suggestions from the audience, and the players use the suggestions to make instant hilarity with their fast-paced improv games.

At the end of each round, every audience member claps, cheers and points at the team or player who they want to receive points. The referee, based on volume and

enthusiasm, awards the points accordingly.

They also have MR. VOICE and Improv Music that add to the comedic scenes. Various fouls are also used in the show like the “Groaner” and “Brown-bag” fouls. At the end of the night, the final score is tallied and the champions are announced.

The annual Lehi Round-Up Stock Parade, an all-horse parade, will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 23. This unique event celebrates the community’s Western heritage and tradition; every person in the Stock Parade is either riding a horse or is in a wagon or carriage pulled by horses.

The parade will begin at Wines Park, 600 North and 100 East, and end at 300 West Main, close to the Lehi Rodeo Grounds. Those who participate in the parade on horseback or wagon will be admitted in for free to the Thursday night rodeo. All Stock Parade participants will be provided a seat in the southeast section.

Raise the Mic Vocal Competition

Local youth ages 6 to 17 will show off their vocal talents as they compete in the annual Raise the Mic competition.

Preliminary auditions are required. In-person auditions will be held on Friday, June 2, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Lehi Arts Center, 685 N. Center. Those auditioning should bring their own playback device and appropriate audio dongle.

Lehi City’s unique event, the Miniature Float Parade, will be held Friday, June 23, beginning at 6 p.m. The parade will begin at Wines Park, 500 N. Center, and end at Lehi High School.

On July 24, 1854, Lehi held its first parade and patriotic celebration. It was a small parade held within the walls of the fort. In 1926, the parade consisted of children on decorated coaster wagons, tricycles and bicycles as well as children in pioneer costumes, all of whom simply paraded around the race track where the present rodeo arena is now located.

These first floats were small and usually constructed in recreation halls throughout Lehi. Decorations consisted of crepe paper with banners, flowers and ribbons. Float builders spent hours curling crepe paper to achieve the petal effect. Large quantities of chicken wire and

paper napkins were used to create animals and cartoon characters.

Later, plastic by the yard was used to make pom-poms of varying sizes, and commercial petal paper made float construction much easier.

Highlighted on each float then and now are Lehi’s best product – imaginatively costumed children!

The Grand Parade is an annual tradition of Lehi Round-Up. It will feature bands, school clubs, businesses, miniature hand-pulled floats, cheerleaders, royalties from around the state and more.

This year, the parade route has been lengthened to accommodate the growing number of spectators. The parade begins at the northeast corner of Wines Park and travels south on 100 East, then west on 200 North to 300 West. It will then turn south on 300 West and proceed to Main Street, where it will turn east and continue down Main Street to 500 East.The last leg of the route will be along 500 East between Main Street and 300 North.

Please be aware that parking is not allowed along the parade route Friday evening and Saturday morning and the streets will be closed to vehicles about 30 minutes before the parade begins.

Arts in the Park Concert

The culminating event of the 2023 Round-Up celebration will mark the kick-off of the Lehi Arts Council’s summer concert series and will feature the amazing vocals of Lehi resident and performing artist Daniel Beck.

Daniel Beck and his family have been residents of Lehi since 2001 and love living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Daniel Beck is a local singer and performer who has enjoyed side work as a recording artist. He has recorded two solo albums, “Love Like That” and “Abide with Me,” as well as features on three EFY CDs.

Daniel has enjoyed many performing opportunities from lead roles in stage musicals and recordings to

leading roles in several “Liken the Scriptures” film projects. “Liken” fans will recognize Daniel as King Saul in “David and Goliath,” King Lamoni in “Ammon and Lamoni,” Rex from “Daniel and the Lions” and Gabriel from “The First Christmas.” He performed the role of Thomas on Rob Gardner’s “Lamb of God” album.

Daniel enjoys his “day job” as a mortgage loan officer with Security Home Mortgage here in Lehi.

He considers his greatest accomplishment to be marrying the girl of his dreams and having five beautiful children and wishes to thank them for all their wonderful love and support and will probably do so by making them join him on stage for this Arts in the Park Concert!

• Saturday and Sunday play not available.

• No scheduling play during days when tournaments are scheduled.

• Golfing on major holidays is not allowed through the membership.

• Chamber members must contact the chamber office to schedule

a tee time, no exceptions. They will not allow you to golf if you schedule your own tee time.

CHAMBER EVENTS & COMMITTEES Chamber Ambassador Committee

The Chamber Ambassador Committee is a committed group of chamber members who go the extra mile to welcome new chamber members, help current members become more engaged in chamber activities, and honor businesses for their achievements.

Committee members visit new chamber members and assist in events such as ribbon cuttings and grand openings. At chamber events, committee members greet all members and help them get to know each other.

The committee is also responsible for selecting candidates to be considered for the chamber’s Business of the Month award. Those candidates are then voted on by the chamber membership, and the Ambassador Committee visits the selected winner and presents the business with a plaque and banner.

Utah Ignite

The Utah Ignite Steering Committee is part of the Utah Ignite organization, which operates as a partnership between the Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce and US Ignite, a program under the National Science Foundation. Utah Ignite is one of about 40 Smart Gigabit Communities throughout the United States and World.

The goal is to create “smart communities” across the globe that collaborate on ideas and share knowledge for the betterment of all residents that live in those areas. Grants are awarded to help advance promising research designed to solve problems, improve quality of life, and save valuable resources and funds by reducing waste and by improving on key efficiencies.

Utah Ignite is currently working on implementing better quality air sensors throughout the State of Utah through a grant that was awarded to Tetrad, a local Utah company. Several other states have already ordered sensors that we are producing here. We have also completed a bike trail study to analyze the current conditions and needs for additional bike trails and are looking into the possibilities of conducting a drone study on Utah Lake.

The drones will monitor the algae blooms on the lake through the latest infrared technologies. The results of these drones will be transmitted in real time and made available to lake authorities. This will help officials stay on top of the blooms before they can become a hazard.

Utah County Business Summit

One of Utah County’s top business events of the year, the Utah County Business Summit was launched in 2014 with the intent of providing ongoing education about best business practices to local business professionals.

Critical insights are discussed and shared during the morning, and attendees have the opportunity to network throughout the day, during breaks, and at lunch.

Each year, the summit attracts a group of exceptional speakers with unique perspectives, expertise, and business insights who inspire, direct and counsel their audience. Past speakers have included Utah Jazz CEO Greg Miller, Traeger Grills CEO Jeremy Andrus, former NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell, KSL Radio host Maria Shilaos, BYU Football Head Coach Kalani Sitake, Overstock.com Chairman and former CEO Johnathan Johnson, as well as prominent entrepreneur, businessman, founder of the hit TV show “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” Brandon Fugal, and many more. Businesses are also invited to showcase themselves as part of the summit’s vendor exhibition.

This annual event was started by the Point of the Mountain Chamber, and, in the spirit of collaboration, the chamber decided to share the event with the other three chambers in northern Utah County. This has proven to be a great idea as the event is attended by professionals from throughout the region and county.

Chamber Ambassador Committee

Connect 4 Lunch – Pure Networking

Connect 4 Lunch is a highly focused, multi-chamber, pure networking event involving business professionals from throughout the northern Utah County area. Attendees network in groups of no more than six over lunch.

These smaller group sizes allow business professionals of all types to get to know each other in a more meaningful way. Personal and professional experiences are shared and needs and ideas are discussed, all while a fantastic lunch is enjoyed. Those attending are invited to bring a door prize from their business to give away if they wish to receive extra recognition.

The General Chamber Luncheon is normally held on the first or second Tuesday of each month from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guest speakers are invited to come and address the chamber membership. Speakers are carefully chosen and range from well-known CEO’s to elected officials from both state on local levels. Topics covered are motivational, best practices, and informational in nature, etc.

December’s luncheon is always highly anticipated as we invite a guest performer to come and perform for the chamber as we usher in the Christmas and holiday season. Past performers include Peter Breinholt and Joshua Creek.

Four times each year, we join with three other chambers for a special combined luncheon. Members find great value in these events as they get to meet and mingle with new faces while we enjoy hearing from top-notch guest speakers. This is another favorite event for members.

The Executive Round Table is an exclusive group of “C-suite”-level executives. The focus of the Executive Round Table is to address important topics such as education, transportation, critical legislation at state and local levels, and anything else the group wishes to address. Issues that affect business and quality of life in northern Utah County are of great importance and are the driving force behind the Executive Round Table.

The annual Point Challenge Golf Tournament is a fun and exciting tournament. While winning is the goal, networking and renewing acquaintances are equally important. Every November, the Point of the Mountain Chamber combines with the three other chambers in northern Utah County to enjoy a fun outing at either Jack and Jills or Fat Cats. We eat lunch, bowl and enjoy each other’s company, all while competing to see who can win the trophy for the highest score. The winning chamber has “bragging rights” for the year!

The Breakfast Before Hours event normally takes place on the second Friday of each month. The event rotates to a different location where an enjoyable breakfast is generously sponsored. This newer event is gaining in popularity and before too long will be at the same level as our Connect 4 Lunch.

Lehi City is a thriving community that is dedicated to providing its residents and businesses with reliable services, infrastructure and quality of life. With a rapidly growing population, we understand the importance of investing in the future to ensure sustainable development and progress.

We announced the Texas Instrument expansion in February, which is expected to bring up to 800 new high-tech jobs to Lehi during the next 20 years. We are pleased to have TI as a community partner. The partnership has brought great opportunities to our city, our state and our country at a critical time in the semiconductor industry.

Our partnership with Strata Networks is giving our residents and businesses the opportunity to increase their productivity with faster internet services. Construction in the first area began in November. We look forward to celebrating the installation of the first customers this spring.

The first Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture (PARC) grant was awarded in 2022 to the Hutchings Museum, the Lehi Historical Society & Archives and the Lehi Arts Council, all nonprofit organizations. The grants help with ongoing operations of cultural operations and cultural

facilities. The grant derives from the PARC tax, which was approved by Lehi voters in 2021. The tax funds are divided between parks, recreation, arts and culture, with parks and recreation receiving 70% of the revenue and the remaining 30% going toward arts and culture.

Lehi City responded to the state mandate of installing secondary water meters and began its 5- to 6-year effort in October 2022. The city received a $10 million grant through the Utah Board of Water Resources to install 5,700 meters of the over 12,000 connections needed. By installing secondary water meters and providing usage data to residents, Lehi expects water use to decrease by 20% to 40%. The focus area has been the Traverse Mountain community, with an anticipated completion of September 2023. In the past, our residents have answered the call to conserve water, and we know they will continue to do what is necessary for the benefit of their city and state.

As Lehi continues to grow, we are working with state officials, top engineers and neighboring cities to find solutions to alleviate congestion. We are currently working on the Point of the Mountain Connector plan. The connector will be a freeway connection between I-15

and the Mountain View Corridor. It will be two lanes in each direction with bridges over the Jordan River and Redwood Road. The connector is an important component to Point of the Mountain. It will improve the way everyone travels through Lehi City and northern Utah County, cutting down the commute time and enhancing the safety of our drivers.

LEHI ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MESSAGE

While the fears of a looming recession are on everyone’s mind, Utah seems to be insulated from the nation. Utah is still seeing low unemployment numbers, business and job growth are on the rise, and migration and birth rates continue to grow, which helps to create a healthy economy.

The Federal Reserve started raising interest rates last year to slow our overheated economy. In theory, the cooling of housing prices could lead to increased difficulty in obtaining investment capital, resulting in business layoffs and higher unemployment rates nationally.

Despite experiencing a slowdown during the previous recession, Utah fared better than other states with lower unemployment rates and was one of the first to recover. Today, Utah is leading the nation in low unemployment and job growth. Lehi is one of the cities that is driving job growth.

In February, Texas Instruments (TI) announced the largest capital expenditure by one business in the state’s history. TI announced a new 1.2 million-square-foot facility, $11.5 billion in capital expenditures, and over 700 jobs needed for the new plant. Upon completion of the new facility, the entire campus will employ 1,500 to 2,000 employees paid a wage higher than the county’s average. Our economy will continue to be strong with this growth.

We are transitioning from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market, and Lehi is not immune to the declining

home demand. Homebuyers are delaying purchases due to borrowing rates that range from 7% to 8%. This is trickling down into a reduction in building permits and new home builds.

The Multiple Listing System (MLS) has showed a significant drop in the number of homes on the market from the previous year. Though home builders might have slowed down, Lehi is still approving new subdivisions and phases for Planned Unit Developments (PUD). Upcoming developments include the approved Skye Area Plan with more than 2,700 residential units.

Thanksgiving Point is currently updating its area plan to include 2,000 residential units. Traverse Mountain still has 2,000 to 2,500 residential units to be developed. This does not include Cold Spring Ranch, Holbrook Farms or the Geneva developments. While the housing market has slowed and developers are being more cautious, homes are still being built. The recession will only be a small bump in the road for Utah compared to other states.

Our responsibility as a government entity is to be a resource and facilitator for the business community. As we look at 2023, there is exciting news for small businesses.

The city has partnered with the Mountainland Association of Governments to create a Revolving Loan Fund for Lehi businesses. The loan fund is intended to serve businesses that have been in business for at least two years, are showing

a profit and need working capital to get to the next level. This loan will provide an opportunity for a business that isn’t quite yet bankable to continue to grow. For more information, reach out to the city economic dwevelopment department at 385-201-1000.

We will see a new business norm emerge through 2023. I envision our robust economy will continue to grow, creating more jobs and a demand for retail and housing. While the nation will see a recession, all economic indicators for the state of Utah and Lehi show our growth will be healthy and controlled. The key to Lehi City’s success is indeed the secret sauce — placing emphasis on family, values and heritage. Lehi City is definitely “where it’s at.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS MAYOR’S MESSAGE

From great parks to fun activities and natural recreation, there is always fun to be had in Saratoga Springs during the summer months. Due to its location, Saratoga Springs has many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Access to the Jordan River, Utah Lake and the Lake Mountain range offers a variety of activities to enjoy the natural beauty of Utah.

Parks and open spaces are an important part of Saratoga Springs. City parks offer many amenities for families to have fun together, including pickleball, sand volleyball, basketball courts, award-winning playgrounds and more. There are two drop-ins along the Jordan River at Inlet and the RC park. These are perfect places to drop in a canoe, kayak, paddleboard or other non-motorized craft.

The Jordan River Trail offers residents the ability to walk, run and bike along the Jordan River and gives access to great fishing spots as well. The Jordan River Trail connects to the Utah Lake Trail near Inlet Park. The South Marina is a great place for a picnic and to access Utah Lake for both motorized and non-motorized watercraft. The Saratoga Springs Marina beach is under construction and should be available in 2024. Use the Israel Canyon trailhead to gain access to the Lake Mountain range for hiking, biking and more.

Saratoga Springs Community Events has another great lineup of

summer fun this year. Summer Monday Fundays start the first Monday in June. This will be the sixth year the city has hosted this event. The events team has partnered with the Food Truck League once again to provide food trucks at Neptune Park each Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. from June 5 to Aug. 14. Each week, a different activity will happen by the stage at 7:30 p.m. From animal and hypnotist shows to a bike safety rally and concerts, there is sure to be something of interest for everyone. Don’t forget that the event always kicks off with the Chalk, Walk and Boogie on June 5. This fun chalk contest and Orchestra concert are a great way to start the summer.

Say aloha to summer and fall on Aug. 14 with the End of Summer Luau. Come join us for a cultural Polynesian show featuring NOA Polynesia while enjoying great food from the food trucks.

Of course, no summer is complete without attending at least one or two events during Saratoga Splash Days, which is celebrated the second full weekend of June. Splash Days will be held June 7-10 this year. We are excited to host the City of Fun Carnival once again. This fun family-friendly carnival is a resident favorite. June 7, with the Splash Bash. After having to cancel this event during the last few years due to COVID and the drought, we are excited to be able to bring this fun water party back. This event is for kids 12 and under. That night we will be holding an exclusive teen event for youth 13 and over. Teens are invited to Inlet Park to come to participate in a chalk war and spikeball.

Even in the midst of international impacts on the economy, the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to move forward strongly with commercial development, transportation improvements and residential growth.

Saratoga Springs has been at the forefront of this residential growth year-over-year for the last 21 years, continually ranking as one of the fastest-growing communities in Utah. The city’s current population is nearing 58,000 residents and growing far ahead of prior projections. This continued growth will translate into a 35% population increase over the next five years or 65,000 total residents. At this rate, Saratoga Springs’ population will nearly double in the next 10 years.

As we progress forward, Saratoga Springs is working with commercial developers and brokers to tell our story and demonstrate the unique dynamic of our city and the surrounding region. Our ability to tell this story played a significant role in Home Depot’s announcement of its location in Saratoga Springs and the development of the surrounding support retail. Recently, Hobby Lobby, Sportsman’s Warehouse and others have opened their doors for business with more to open in the coming months.

Since the announcement of Costco, demand for retail development continues to be strong. A wide variety of businesses have reached out to the city and local developers about opening new locations in our area. These include everything from additional big-box stores to mid-box stores, fast-casual dining to sit-down restaurants, hotels, family entertainment, dance schools, medical services and more.

Getting to these businesses is now easier than ever. Saratoga Springs’s commercial district is home to a new interchange for Utah’s western freeway system, the Mountain View Corridor. The first phase of this

multi-faceted intersection connects several municipalities to Interstate 15, Bangerter Highway and Redwood Road. It provides multiple outlets to Salt Lake City and the hub of Silicon Slopes. This interchange is also located next to the future home of two new medical facilities from Utah’s top hospital systems.

In the development of the city, we realized we don’t have a “downtown area.” We are excited to be working on plans to create an area of the city that would include a diverse mixed use area we would be proud to call our downtown with all the amenities you would expect to see there.

During the last year, multiple transportation improvements in Saratoga Springs were also completed with more under way. Pony Express from Redwood Road to the Jordan River was completed and Foothill Blvd. from Crossroads Blvd. to Grandview Blvd. will be completed in August. Both of these projects will provide great relief to east-west congestion as well as north-south traffic through the City of Saratoga Springs.

In addition to these improvements, the Utah Department of Transportation will start on the Mountain View Corridor connection from Porter Rockwell Blvd. to 2100 North. This connection is the first phase of a multi-faceted interchange that will provide a whole

new means of transportation to alleviate congestion through Saratoga Springs and provide a long-overdue alternate route to the bottleneck on I-15.

So, what does all of this growth mean for economic development in Saratoga Springs? It means more retailers and commercial developers are turning their eyes to Saratoga Springs. It means we are proactively cultivating an incredible synergy that businesses are expanding and thriving on.

Most importantly, it means our residents will continue to find great places to work, go out to eat, have fun with their families and enjoy the amazing quality of life in our community.

As we like to say in Saratoga Springs, “Life’s just better here!”

Quick Quack hosts fundraisers to assist local families

A car wash business with locations in Lehi and Saratoga Springs is committed to going the extra mile to support the local community every time it opens a new wash.

Through its Preview Fundraiser program, Quick Quack Car Wash has raised and donated nearly $60,000 to Lehi and Saratoga Springs families in need. “The mission of Quick Quack Car Wash is to Change Lives for the Better. Our Preview Fundraisers are just one example of this mission in action,” said Roger Steed, Quick Quack Car Wash’s marketing leader for Utah and Colorado.

Quick Quack owns and operates more than 190 locations in five states, including 48 locations in Utah. Eleven of the Utah locations opened during 2022, including three in Lehi.

As part of the Grand Opening festivities of each of its new locations, Quick Quack conducts a fundraiser on the evening before the location’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. The community is invited to visit the new location and receive a free car wash; during their visit, customers are encouraged to donate to the fundraiser recipient.

Quick Quack matches all the funds donated, and a check is presented to the recipient the next day.

During the nearly 20 years Quick Quack has been conducting Preview Fundraisers, it has helped families experiencing a variety of hardships, including medical issues, funeral costs and struggles with homelessness.

Preview Fundraiser recipients are commonly found through Quick Quack Team Members’ connection to the local community. The business looks to serve any family generally located within 5 miles of the new location.

“When entering a new area, we strive to be a contributing partner to the community by connecting with those in need and serving as best we can,” Steed said.

During the opening of its location at 66 W. Pioneer Crossing, Sarato-

ga Springs, in 2018, Quick Quack conducted its Preview Fundraiser for Saratoga Springs resident Emily Thorton, who had lost her husband Dylan in a tragic accident. Customers helped Quick Quack donate $5,162 to Thorton.

In 2022, Quick Quack opened three locations in Lehi: East Lehi, 2580 N. 1200 West; North Lehi, 1362 E. 3500 North; and West Lehi, 3765 W. 2150 North. The East and North Lehi locations both opened on Oct. 26, 2022, while the West Lehi location opened on Dec. 14, 2022.

When two of its new Lehi car washes opened on the same day, Quick Quack collected donated funds at both locations for the Heather and Parley Preece family. The Preeces’ three children are all on the autism spectrum and are involved in various therapies, included speech therapy and adaptive gymnastics.

With the support of the local community, Quick Quack was able to present a check for $18,000 to the Preece family to help with various medical costs.

Then, when the third Lehi location opened last year, the community again showed its generosity through assisting the Landeen family — specifically 10-year-old Leah Landeen, who was born with Down syndrome, speech apraxia and celiac disease and is also on the autism spectrum.

Leah has gone through many surgeries and therapy sessions to assist

with her health challenges, all while she maintains a postive outlook. With the help of the local community, Quick Quick was able to present a check for $35,000 to the Landeen family to assist them with Leah’s treatment.

Steed said most customers who attend the Preview Fundraisers are excited to help and contribute generously. “Customers hear the story of the family or organization in need and are usually moved to participate in the fundraiser,” he said. “Preview Fundraisers are a unique experience that allows customers and those donating to put a face to these personal community causes.”

Originally named Splash & Dash Car Wash, the Quick Quack Car Wash chain had its beginning in Sacramento, California, with a single location in 2004 and quickly grew to six locations within three years. In 2008, the company doubled in size by acquiring a chain of car washes in Northwest Texas named Quick Quack Car Wash.

Shortly following the acquisition, the company adopted the Quick Quack name across all 13 locations. Headquartered in Roseville, California, Quick Quack Car Wash is best known for its community fundraisers, environmentally friendly and sustainable business, unlimited car wash memberships, free vacuums and exceptional customer service from its sharp-looking, tie-clad team members.

It’s a wild ride but worth it, says franchise owner

Starting and owning your own business is full of opportunities and pitfalls. Raising a family at the same time takes planning and perseverence. The rewards, however, are worth it.

“Business ownership is for the crazy at heart. You’ve got to be a little bit nuts to do it,” said Allie Canaday, owner of the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and Auntie Anne’s pretzel store franchises at the Outlets at Traverse Mountain in Lehi. “The highs are high and the lows are low, but it is well worth it to invest in yourself and your future, because that’s ultimately what we’re doing. We’re in control of our success.”

Canaday earned her first opportunity to own her own business through a business program at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. As part of the program, the best students were offered a chance to start their own business through a franchise.

She first went to Omaha, Nebraska, to operate her first Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. She and her husband Matt — who is co-owner of their two franchises — were dating at the time, and she asked him to accompany her and help manage the store.

After several months, Steven L. Craig, owner of the Outlets at Traverse Mountain and a benefactor of the Missouri school, offered Canday the opportunity to open a store in his new Lehi outlet mall, which was under construction.

Canaday was just 23 years old when she and Matt moved to Utah to open their new Lehi Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory store. A couple of years later, Craig helped them begin the process of obtaining their Auntie Anne’s franchise.

“The mall was doing really well and there was limited food in the mall, and we knew it was a limited time before someone jumped on the opportunity, and so we thought, why

not us?” Allie said.

The couple have since married and now have three children. They have also started running an Auntie Anne’s pretzel truck in addition to their brick-andmortar store.

“I like the franchise structure of looking for a tried-and-true brand that has a culture of not only a great product, but integrity, that puts the franchisee first,” Canaday said.

Franchises are a good option for someone looking to start their own business, she said. Those interested in this kind of opportunity should, however, be sure to find a company that provides ongoing support such as conventions, regular onsite visits and product innovations.

She also recommended talking with current franchisees to get their perspective. “That’s the best thing you could possibly do,” she said, because franchise owners will be honest about the day-to-day challenges they face.

When first starting out in your new business, she suggested spending at least the first year handling the details of the business yourself. “In my experience, I learned so much in the beginning from being hands-on,” she said.

Now she has managers that deal with the daily details, but since she has done their job, she better understands their challenges and concerns. “I know what to expect from them because I know what I did myself,” she said.

The hardest part of running a

business, Canaday said, is managing people. “I think that’s something a lot of people overlook in the beginning,” she said. “It needs to be part of your decision-making.” For example, if managing people is not an owner’s strength, they could seek out a partner who does have excellent management skills.

Canaday said she’s always thinking about business — it’s part of her nature now after more than 10 years as a franchise owner. However, she consciously tries to get her work done during the day so she can focus on her family more fully in the evening.

Balancing running your own business and raising a family is hard, “but it’s possible if you know how to set boundaries,” she said. It’s important for she and her husband to plan date nights that don’t involve business as nearly all of their conversations are about their businesses.

“My husband and I have both hit our breaking points at certain turns of owning businesses together, but right now we’re in a good place,” she said, “but there’s definitely peaks and valleys that we ride.”
