The information contained here-in is for your convenience as a prospective participant in the activities of the Sanpete County Fair. It has been prepared for you

by The Pyramid and paid for by the people who will greet you from the following pages in the manner they have chosen. No money has been taken from public funds.

We would like you to review the book leisurely and to acquaint yourself with those who have made it possible for us to furnish the book without cost to you. An index of contributors and advertisements will be found in the book.

Information regarding the various activities, rules and regulations will also be found. The fair board reserves the right to make any necessary changes in the rules and regulations found within this book.

In preparing this information we have tried to anticipate and to arrange for departments to take care of all participants.

If you have items to exhibit and can find no provision for them, do not hesitate to bring them in. They will be displayed as well as facilities permit.

For over 100 years, Sanpete County has enjoyed an annual fair. We think county fairs are necessary to progress. No other place offers the opportunity for each individual to display the product of his skill or talent, to give others a chance to share knowledge.

Look around you. Ask yourself this question, “What do I have or do that is not common?” If you will do this, you will probably bring something to the fair and add to your pleasure by doing it.

There is no admission charge to the fairgrounds, including the exhibition building, animal barns and Fun on the Farm.

Admission will be charged for entertainment only.

Tickets for these events are sold online this year as well as carnival ride passes.

Visit www.sanpetecountyfair.net to find the ticket link. Please print your tickets at home, or save them on your mobile device for scanning at the gates.

Carnival ride passes will be distributed at our ticket booth once you validate your order there. Rodeo and derby tickets will also be sold at the ticket booth from 4-8 p.m., Monday thru Friday, Aug. 5-16.

We truly appreciate your attendance and participation in the annual Sanpete County Fair. Without all of you, this fair would not be possible. In addition, our Fair Board works all year long to make the fair successful. We thank them for their time and recognize their valuable contributions!

Commissioners welcome all to the 2019 “Bigger Better Bluer” Sanpete County Fair The Sanpete County Commissioners welcome everyone to the 2019 Sanpete County Fair. Last year’s fair with the new grandstand was a great success thanks to the hard work of the fair board, Sanpete County employees and all the volunteers.

This year, the fair is seen as a Bigger Better Bluer blue ribbon event honoring agriculture, business and education. The citizens of Sanpete County have always put a high value on education.

As a result the farms produce more, the businesses are more competitive and the children go on to do great things throughout the United States of America and the world.

If there were a blue ribbon given for strong family values and hard work, it would come to Sanpete County. The commissioners applaud the hard work of the parents of Sanpete County for their tireless efforts in raising strong, hardworking sons and daughters.

Since 1914, Sanpete County has produced a blue ribbon fair.

We commissioners invite one and all to come and enjoy the Bigger Better Bluer 2019 fair.

hen it comes to contests and challenges, you can always count Jessica Wright in. She had a fun time coming up with her creation for this year’s Sanpete County Fair theme: Bigger, Better, Bluer. When her artwork was also chosen, she was elated. “I love anything that has to do with art,” she says.

Jessica Wright is the daughter of Kevin and Natalie Wright, Fountain Green. She has been participating in the Sanpete County Fair by showing steers, pigs, lambs, and now goats in the junior livestock show for 10 years.

When Jessica realized she had the opportunity to combine her love of the fair and livestock with her passion for art in the theme contest, she jumped right in.

Besides raising 4-H and FFA livestock projects, Jessica has entered art in both the open art show and 4-H exhibits in the Sanpete County and Utah State Fairs.

Her artwork has been getting attention. One of her creations painted onto barn wood entitled “A Ride in Grandeur” won an Honorable Mention Scholarship in the Utah State Senate Art Contest, was displayed at the Capitol Building and was later purchased.

— Jessica Wright In addition, an art piece entitled “Sunset Pastel” was entered in the Snow College Art Contest in April 2018 and ultimately purchased by Central Valley Medical Center.

Jessica has taken several art classes that include ceramics and drawing. She is currently trying her hand at making custom river tables by using the experience she gained in woodworking classes at Juab High School. A table she created won the Best In Show award at the Juab High School CTE Showcase last May. Jessica is looking forward to participating in the 2019 Sanpete County Fair. With the new rodeo arena and livestock barn improvements, this year’s fair is sure to be bigger, better, and bluer!

Miss Sanpete County, Outstanding Teen royalties to be selected Aug. 9

T

he Miss Sanpete County and Miss Sanpete County’s Outstanding Teen Board announce their upcoming pageant on Friday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m., in the Eccles Center for the Performing Arts, 300 East Center, Ephraim.

Tickets will be available at the door, which opens at 6 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults; Kids, ages 4-11, are $4 each.

Adult tickets will receive a program with additional programs at $1 each.

Newly crowned Miss Utah 2019 Dexonna Talbot will be the host for the evening.

Miss Sanpete County The Miss Sanpete County Scholarship pageant is affiliated with the Miss America Organization. The Miss America Organization is a 501©4 not-for-profit organization, the nation’s leading advocate for women’s education, and the largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women in the United States. It awards millions of dollars in scholarships annually.

The new Miss Sanpete County will receive a $2,000 scholarship and will compete for the title of Miss Utah in June 2020.

Candidates seeking to be chosen as the new Miss Sanpete County will compete in: Interview (10 minutes) 25 percent of score; Talent (90 seconds) 40 percent of score; Evening Wear/Social Impact Initiative Statement 20 percent of score; and Onstage Question 15 percent of score.

Bellamy Sorensen, of Gunnison, has served as Miss Sanpete 2018. She competed at the Miss Utah pageant in June and performed a self-arranged piano piece combining “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by the piano guys and “Etude” by Kabalevsky. Bellamy has spent her year of service focusing on her Social Impact Initiative “Unplug: The Effects of Technology and Media”.

Western Horse 4-H Program, show presents the best in Sanpete County The Western Horse 4-H program will present their best animals and exhibitors during the Sanpete County Fair horse show on Saturday, Aug. 17. Exhibitors and their rides register at 8 a.m., horse tests at 8:30 a.m., followed by the horse show promptly at 9 a.m., in the fairgrounds arena. Admission is free.

About Western Horse 4-H Program The Western Horse 4-H program is designed to assist young people by combining several areas of knowledge about horses, with skills and techniques in riding during various events.

Each exhibitor has a horse project that they practice and show with for the season, working to consistently improve both knowledge and skill while having fun doing so.

There are three age divisions: Junior (age 8 and completion of third through fifth grade), Intermediate (completion of sixth through eighth grade), and Senior (completion of ninth through 12th grade).

The 4-H horse show consists of seven events: a written test, three judged events, and three timed speed events. Showmanship/halter and horsemanship are the same every season for judged events with the third event being on a rotation every two years.

The current rotational judged event is ranch riding. In the timed speed events, poles and barrels are run every year, with the third event also being on a two-year rotation. The current rotational speed event is known as key hole.

In Sanpete County, there are four 4-H horse shows during the season. The fourth show is part of the Sanpete County Fair. Consistent growth in the number of participants has been seen over the last few years, with this year really seeing a large increase.

The Western Horse 4-H Program has a horse council consisting of five members: Muria Everitt, chairperson; Deric Everitt, co-chair; Shauna Stevens, vice-chair; Nicole Malstrom, secretary; and Randee Jaques, treasurer.

Youth participants in the Western Horse 4-H Program will present their best animals and skills during the horse show on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 9 a.m., in the Sanpete County Fair Arena, 500 North Main Street, Manti. Admission is free.

The council is available to help others with this program. Currently the council sets up, runs the shows and gladly accepts all volunteer help from family and friends of participants.

There is a lot of fun and enjoyment to be had by watching the youth learn and grow, as well as by developing great friendships with youth throughout the county. It truly is a great program to be a part of.

Artistic creations on display in exhibit building The many artistic creations of Sanpete County citizens will be on display in the exhibit building to see and enjoy beginning Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. Those who want to enter an exhibit can do so Saturday Aug. 17, from 1-5 p.m.

Exhibits range from fine arts (oil, watercolor, chalk, pencil art), string art, Legos, wood carving and burning, woodworking, leather work, crochet, sewing, cross stitch, porcelain dolls, ceramics, quilting, latch hook, furniture finishing, fresh flowers and potted plants, fresh fruits and vegetables from personal gardens, bottled goods and more.

All visitors to the exhibit building are encouraged to pick up a voting ballot at the front desk, choose their favorite exhibits and then turn in the completed ballot to help select which entry receives the People’s Choice exhibit award.

Exhibit schedule Saturday, Aug. 17, 1-4 p.m., 4-H exhibit entries accepted.

Also on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 1-5 p.m., Open Class entries will be accepted in the exhibit building. All entries except baked goods, fresh flowers and potted plants.

Monday, Aug. 19, 3-6 p.m., Open Class baked goods and fresh produce accepted. Baked goods and produce must be on plates covered with plastic.

Tuesday, Aug. 20, closed for judging.

Wednesday, Aug. 21, 9-11 a.m., Open Class floral displays will be accepted. 11 a.m.-2 p.m., closed for judging floral displays.

2-7 p.m., exhibit building open for public viewing.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22, 23 and 24, the exhibit building will be open to the public 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 26, 3-6 p.m., pick-up entries and ribbons. Entries must be picked up on this day. If an entry cannot be picked up, contact Sandi Schoppe at (435) 851-4322 or send someone to pick them up. Those entries not picked up, or previous arrangements made, will be discarded.

Entry Rules All Sanpete County residents are encouraged to exhibit those items they have grown or created. When bringing an exhibit in for display, if there is no category for an entry, one will be made to accommodate the entry.

Strike a match, light the briquettes Aug. 17 Prepare now to create that favorite Dutch oven dish using that wonderful secret family recipe. Be it a cobbler, casserole, brisket, beans, potatoes or a sinful dessert; contestants will be going for top prizes in the annual Sanpete County Fair’s Dutch Oven Cook-off to be held Saturday, Aug. 17, during the Sanpete Fair.

Don’t worry about a lack of expertise, come join in the Dutch oven food and fun for the afternoon. The cook-off will be held next to the pavilion at the fairgrounds in Manti.

Dutch oven cook-off competitors need to bring their completed entry form(s) to the Fairgrounds Pavilion and must be entered by 2 p.m. that day. Judging will begin at 4:30 p.m. Food will be available to purchase after the judging at $5 per plate with the proceeds going to the Sanpete County Fair. Extra entry forms will be available the day of the cook-off at the pavilion.

Dutch oven history Dutch ovens are a distinctive cooking pot which has thick walls, generally manufactured from cast iron. It can be cast iron with an enameled finish but in any case it has a tight-fitting lid.

Dutch ovens have been used for centuries within kitchens around the globe as a widely used cooking vessel. The phrase Dutch oven has been around and used for more than 300 years.

During the 1600s the Dutch discovered a significantly better system for producing molds for casting the pots using sand, which makes the resulting pots have a far smoother surface area.

Throughout the history of America the actual cooking pots have become shallower and legs have been added to better keep the pot above the hot coals on an open fire.

Early colonists appreciated the flexibility and sturdiness associated with cast iron. In fact the ovens were regarded as being so useful, that early colonists entered them into their wills.

Rapidly, this new oven came to be greatly valued by American colonists, mainly because its cast-iron construction caused it to be really long-lasting while its design helped bring about the notable versatility.

The truth is, the housewife seldom called for any other sort of pot, because the Dutch oven pot may be employed for boiling, frying, stewing, roasting as well as baking — all in one.

In 1704, a man named Abraham Darby traveled from England to Holland to inspect a Dutch casting process by which brass vessels where cast in dry sand molds.

Upon returning to England, Darby experimented with the process and eventually patented a casting process using a better type of molding sand, as well as a process of baking the mold to improve casting smoothness. He eventually began casting pots and shipping them to the new colonies and throughout the world.

Others have suggested that early Dutch traders or salesmen peddling cast iron pots may have given rise to the name “Dutch oven.” Still others believe that the name came from Dutch settlers in the Pennsylvania area who used similar cast iron pots or kettles.

Bread is one of the categories to be judged in this year’s Dutch oven cook-off Saturday, Aug. 17, during the Sanpete County Fair. Other choices contestants may choose are a main dish, side dish and dessert. or kettles. The most common application of the name is to a cast iron pot or kettle with a flat bottom having three legs to hold the oven above the coals, flat sides and a flat, flanged lid for holding coals. The ovens have a steel bail handle attached to “ears” on each side of the oven near the top for carrying.

Terry C. Rigby named 2019 Sanpete County King Cowboy

T

erry C. Rigby was born in 1953 to Cleon B and Joyce Rigby. He is the third generation to live and work on the family farm in Oak Creek. Terry has always been a major part of the success of the farm. He worked with his father with the dairy farm and the range cow operation.

Rigby Farm was part of the Fairview/Milburn Cattle Association on north Skyline Drive. Terry has been working on the cattle permit since a young child, herding, fencing, making repairs to water troughs and taking advantage of the overall enjoyment of being on the north skyline.

Terry married Pam Peel in January 1976. Together they raised three children Michael, Lesa, and Rickie and have added Jenny, Clint and Brett to the family along with eight grandchildren.

Terry feels like his biggest accomplishment and joy in life is his family. The kids were raised on the farm and they are all living and raising their children within 15 minutes of the farm. Terry is proud of his family and the contributions they have shared with the community and the successes they have had in their lives.

Terry and Pam started a horse operation in 1978 with the encouragement of his father Cleon. Cleon was an avid horseman and Terry has followed his example. Horses were and are a large part of the Rigby family legacy.

Terry and Pam raise AQHA horses and have traveled all over the western part of the United States gathering fillies and stud horses to provide the best bloodlines for ranch and pleasure horses.

This has been a lifetime of enjoyment for the entire family. SanBar Ranch now has its own production sale and is recognized as a Ranching Heritage AQHA Breeder.

Terry has a love for his country, his heritage and hopes to continue the legacy he has been given. He looks up to the past and present King Cowboys that have and are representing Sanpete County. He respects the legacy and he grew up knowing many of them as great men and good cowboys.

He feels it is a privilege to be chosen to be among some of the hardest working and great men of Sanpete County.

Terry will do everything to honor the title.

When asked what the most important things he has accomplished in his lifetime, he stated, “First a husband, second a father, third a grandfather, and the opportunity to live the life I am living. I am proud to have the opportunity to join with these great cowboys representing Sanpete County.”

Clair, Arla Otten to serve as grand marshals Clair and Arla Otten, Sterling, have been chosen to serve as Grand Marshals for the 2019 Sanpete County Fair Parade scheduled to take place at 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24 along Main Street in Manti.

The two lovingly call Sterling their home town even though they live two miles south of Sterling on the Nine Mile Ranch. At the time they got married, it was the custom to have a program and a dance. Kay Frischknecht was the Master of Ceremonies for their program. He gave Clair the “Key to the City” and said that he had been the city manager long enough.

It is here on the Nine Mile Ranch that their eight children joined their family, Clare Ann, Mark, Natalee, Russell, Travis, Arleen, Dexter and Sheldon. They now have 40 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Today, in one way or another, all their children are involved in farming.

For over 60 years, Nine Mile Ranch was a cow milking dairy.

Today the barn stands empty and the corrals are gone, but it’s still considered the family farm.

In addition to milking cows and farming, Clair also taught fourth grade at Gunnison Valley Elementary. All the kids had their assigned jobs to do both morning and night. During that time, Arla was a stay-at- home mom. She cleaned the barn, fed the cows and moved the sprinklers, birthed and fed calves.

Now that those days are gone, she realizes they were some of the happiest times of her life. Living on the farm has truly been a family affair. When the kids were younger, Arla made all the kids look-a-like clothes, so even the last time cows were shown at the county fair, they still followed the tradition and had matching shirts.

Clair and Arla loved to help the kids and later on grandkids get their cows and calves ready for the fair. When the grandkids started participating, they would go out in the corral and let each grandchild choose their own calf. Usually it was one that they liked and thought they could handle, even though Clair knew he had better cows than what some of them would pick. It was more important to Clair that the kids were happy with their choices.

Clair and Arla taught their children to work, but they also played with them. They often went camping or four-wheeler riding. They went hunting together and especially enjoyed the lunch. When each child turned 10, they were given a heifer calf to raise and to care for so when it had a calf and started milking, they would get the money from the milk.

Clair and Arla have been active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Clair was a Financial Clerk and also a Bishop.

Arla has served as ward and stake Primary president. They are both involved in Scouting.

Besides showing cows at the Sanpete County Fair, many pets have been entered in the Pet Show and won a fair share of blue ribbons. The hide ride participants are often grandkids and before long, it will be great-grandkids taking part too.

Clair enjoys the horse pulls and the hamburger stand and the Dutch oven cook off is great too. The demolition derby has at26 ­— SANPETE COUNTY FAIR

Both Clair and Arla were honored to be selected as grand marshals and are looking forward to the upcoming 2019 Sanpete County Fair.

Junior rodeo sees action Aug. 17 Once again the Sanpete County Fair Board is excited to bring back the Junior Rodeo for 2019 to be held at 6 p.m., Saturday Aug. 17, at the fairgrounds arena.

Events include mutton bustin’, calf riding, steer riding, junior and senior barrels and greased pig chases.

Mutton bustin’, ages 3-6, entry fee is $10. Trophies awarded for the top three riders, the top six riders will then have a chance to ride one more time for a winner take all trophy.

Calf riding for ages 7-9 with a $15 entry fee. There will be a buckle for first place and trophies for second and third places.

Steer riding for ages 10-13. The entry fee is $15. There will be a buckle for first place 28 — SANPETE COUNTY FAIR

and trophies for second and third place.

Another event will be junior barrels for ages 12 and under. The rider must be able to complete the pattern on their own without being led with entry fee of $15.

Top run will receive a buckle and trophies for second and third places.

Senior barrels for ages 13-17, with entry fee of $15. A buckle will awarded for the top run and trophies for second and third place.

There will be two greased pig chases for two different age divisions. Entry fee for either division is $5. The winners will collect a $50 cash prize.

Between events, all little cowboys and cowgirls will be encouraged to get in the

game with several activities.

Entry fees are due the night of the rodeo from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the north entrance of the arena, where waivers are signed and participants receive a number. All paying participants will also receive a t-shirt.

Sanpete Xtreme Moto jumps into the Sanpete County Fairgrounds for high excitement competition racing over all sorts of obstacles on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The main event begins at 8 p.m.

Xtreme motocross comes to the fair MANTI- A night full of thrills and spills is coming to the Sanpete County Fair when the Sanpete Xtreme Moto jumps into the fairgrounds arena on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Gates open at 4 p.m., qualifying rounds at 5 p.m., followed by the main event at 8 p.m.

Challenging competition drenches firemen Fire crews from Sanpete communities are challenged each year to prove they have what it takes to handle the rigors of service and to have fun in the process. It is one of the most crowd-pleasing events of the Sanpete County Fair.

This year’s Fireman’s Challenge is sure to be another drenching success. It will be held Wednesday, Aug. 21, gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and the fun begins at 7 p.m., in the big arena at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds. All fire departments from around the valley are eligible to participate in the challenge and can take home cash prizes and trophies.

What looks like fun and games to the public is, in reality, life-saving training.

Jr. Livestock Show awards youth for hard work The Sanpete County Jr. Livestock Show is a great educational program for youth ages 9-18 and has been conducted annually at the Sanpete County Fair since the mid-1980s.

Youth registered with 4-H or FFA participate by purchasing a calf, a pig, a lamb or goat, which are fed, groomed and exercised for 60 to 100 days.

The youth also study animal science and how to lead and show the animal. All of the hard work and study is challenged at the livestock show where youth demonstrate their livestock projects to a judge.

The final event is the Livestock Auction and Sale at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, where members of the community and local businesses purchase or contribute a donation to purchase a livestock project animal. The livestock is processed at a local meat processing plant for a good supply of high-quality meat for the buyer.

There are many volunteers who work hard to provide this great learning experience to the 4-H and FFA youth. Please come and support this great youth educational experience.

Fun on the Farm features activities for kids Fun on the Farm will be open again this year for three days of “hands-on” agricultural fun at the Sanpete County Fair on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 22 and 23, from 4-7 p.m., and on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. It will close before the parade and will not reopen.

This free activity is for kids of all ages, but those in second grade and under need to be accompanied by an adult. It is located inside the fairgrounds behind the swimming pool.

Why visit Fun on the Farm Fun on the Farm is a hands-on agricultural exhibit that teaches how food gets from the farm to the table. When visitors arrive at the first building, they put on an apron and get a basket, and then proceed through the buildings where each is dedicated to a different farm animal.

Farmers have to move their hay, either to a haystack, to the market or to feed it to their animals. Visitors to Fun on the Farm at the Sanpete County Fair will have the opportunity to help. While there, participants will have fun while learning about farm life.

The visitors then take the products they have gathered and turn them into the market and receive a Fun on the Farm dollar. Then the dollar can be spent at the store for a treat or prize. Visitors can go through Fun on the Farm as many times as they want but visitors can only get one prize a day in the store.

Some of the buildings are getting a face-lift with new paint and new animal paintings this year. There will also be special shirts visitors may purchase that will help fund the Fun on the Farm exhibit into the future.

Fun and surprises await visitors to Fun on the Farm at the Sanpete County Fair, Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 22-24. its 10th anniversary and the support of the local businesses, agricultural organizations and Sanpete County citizens is greatly appreciated.

Fun on the Farm is a permanent exhibit at the Sanpete County Fair that was created by Calan Olsen in response

to a suggestion from his grandpa, Steve Frischknecht. An estimated 2,500 visitors attend the exhibit each year.

Calan appreciates everyone who helps to make this exhibit a success and hopes that everyone enjoys their visit to Fun on the Farm.

Cambrie Poulsen Cambrie Poulsen, first attendant, is the

13-year-old daughter of Clint and Jamie Poulsen, Fairview. She attends North Sanpete Middle School and will be in eighth grade this year. Cambrie loves to hunt, fish, camp and rodeo. If she had one wish come true, it would be to someday repay her parents for all they have done for her.

Sarah Everitt Sarah Everitt, second attendant, is the daughter of Deric and Muria Everitt, Ephraim. She is the third oldest of nine children and will be a sophomore next year at Manti High School where she is passionate about participating in track, percussion and peer tutoring.

Sarah is a fun, loving girl who enjoys playing with her siblings, playing fetch with her goofy golden retriever, riding horses and working with children in the 4-H program.

She loves being a part of the all things 4-H, including the summer camps, participating in the ambassador program and competing in local horse shows.

Sarah also loves to babysit anyone but her own siblings.

She is crazy about her amazing horses, Blue and Honey, who never cease to make her smile. Family and friends are important to Sarah as she enjoys life looking for the next adventure.

Local talent show provides entertainment, opportunity to showcase talents Entertainment during the Sanpete County Fair includes the Local Talent Show performances scheduled for three days beginning Thursday and Friday, Aug. 22 and 23, from 4 to 6 p.m., and on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on stage in the pavilion on the south side of the fairgrounds.

Admission is free.

While attending the fair, be sure to come and enjoy all the amazing talent that will entertain, uplift and provide a good beat at the fair.

2019-20 Junior Princess Royalty named Last May, five young ladies competed in the Junior Princess Royalty pageant, which was a two-day event. The first day, the girls met at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Equestrian Center and ConToy Arena in Mt. Pleasant, with their horses, and were judged on horse knowledge, horse skills, Western Pleasure style of riding, carrying the flag and on their queen presentation ride.

The next day, contestants were judged on modeling and appearance, public speaking, interview and personality at Manti City Hall. The judges then selected and crowned the new royalty.

The 2019-20 Junior Princess Royalty are Katie Aagard, jr. princess; Kenley Kelso, first attendant; and Jordan Brouillette, second attendant.

This summer the Junior Princess Royalty has been representing Sanpete County at all parades and rodeos in the county, as well as the Ute Stampede in Nephi. During the Sanpete County Fair, they will be at a majority of the fair events, and reign over the rodeo.

The royalty also helps during the pet show, horse pulls, Fun on the Farm, open horse show, Junior Rodeo and anywhere else the fair board asks for their help.

Each year, prior to the competition, a couple of clinics are held so the contestants can work on every category and get extra practice.

She is also involved in 4-H and received the High Point buckle in 2017 and 2018 for Sanpete County in the junior division.

Katie will be going into sixth grade at Spring City Elementary this year. Her favorite subject is science. When she grows up, she would like to be a veterinarian.

She also loves to play volleyball, soccer and softball. Her secret talent is that she is quite the baker. She loves to bake muffins and cookies and is always trying out new recipes for her family to enjoy.

Katie is honored to hold the title as Sanpete County Junior Princess and is excited to promote the sport of rodeo in this beautiful county.

Kenley Kelso Kenley Kelso, 11, first attendant, is the daughter of Kurt and Lindsay Kelso, Mt. Pleasant. She currently attends Mt. Pleasant Elementary where she maintains straight A’s. School is very important to her as she is always excited to learn new things.

Kenley is known for her ability to be a good friend, no one feels lonely when she

is around. Her interests include agriculture, horse training, horse riding, animal care, reading, basketball, running and representing the world wide sport of rodeo.

Kenley is a seven generation Sanpete grown cowgirl. She has two little brothers, Kooper and Klay. They love horse riding, hunting, fishing and camping together.

Kenley is proud to serve as first attendant in the Sanpete County Junior Princess Royalty, and hopes one day to be Miss Rodeo America.

Jordan Brouillette Jordan Brouillette, 11, second attendant, is the daughter of Addam and Nicole Brouillette, Manti. She loves living on a small farm with her parents, her dog Maggie, eight chickens, one cat, and a couple of pigs. She enjoys caring for the animals on the farm.

Jordan helps out at her grandma’s farm too, especially since that is where her horse Poco calls home. She loves exploring during trail rides with her aunts whenever she can.

She is also very active in a Girl Scout troop and her dance program. Jordan is grateful for the opportunity to represent Sanpete County as part of the royalty this year.

The 41st Annual Open Pet Show encourages everyone to bring their pet and join the competition Friday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m., at the Sanpete County Fair pavilion. Ribbons and trophies will be awarded.

41st Annual Open Pet Show set Aug. 23 The Sanpete County Fair’s 41st Annual Open Pet Show will welcome all pets to the fairgrounds pavilion at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23.

You may ask, “What is a pet?” Well quite simply and concisely, a pet can be almost anything. Who is to say that a mouse, spider, sneaky snake or a starling can’t be a

pet? As the old saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” also applies to pets.

Everyone is encouraged to give their ‘pet’ a bath or shower, dress it up and bring it to the pet show at the Sanpete County Fair pavilion to strut their stuff.

No pre-registration is required.

Entry categories are as follows: small dog, large dog, cat, rabbit, reptile, bird and foul, costume, large pet, most unusual and open. There is no fee to enter and each entrant receives a ribbon. There will be a first place winner in each category and the best-of-show will receive trophies.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting, a fastaction competitive sport, revisits rodeo Cowboy Mounted Shooting, one of the fastest growing equine sports in the nation, will be part of the 2019 Bigger, Bluer, Better, Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association (RMPRA) Rodeo at the Sanpete County Fair.

The action gets underway at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22; and at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds.

The sport of mounted shooting began in Arizona in 1996. Since then, interest in the competitive sport has exploded, with lots of interested riders. Brent Daniels is one of the original Sanpete County shooters and helped Lon Pritchard get started in the sport.

The Cowboy Mounted Shooting competition involves the use of two six guns, rifle or a double barrel shotgun and a fast horse. It is a timed event with five second penalties for targets missed and the fasted overall time wins. There are 64 different courses.

The pistols are real working single action revolvers, while the rifles are typically lever-action, in either case the gun must be cocked each time before firing. The ammunition used is 45 Long Colt casings loaded with black powder. Each shot has a range of about 15 feet.

There is a dress code that participants must wear. For men, its typical cowboy attire. The ladies may wear period dresses, pants and chinks. Most riders and horses wear hearing protection. Safety for horse, rider and audience is a must.

Pritchard has competed in Cowboy Mounted Shooting with Utah’s Mounted Thunder and nationally with the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) for about four years.

He rides a 14-year-old mare named Kink and Pritchard believes that Kink loves the competition as much as he does. He and his horse travel the country to participate in mounted shooting competitions, which finish this year with the CMSA Wrangler 52 — SANPETE COUNTY FAIR

After the world championship, a new season begins with a competition event in Heber, Oct. 24-26, the CMSA Heber Valley Cowboy Poetry.

World-renowned rodeo clown Whistle Nut & Ole coming to Sanpete County Rodeos You may have heard of Whistle Nut, he’s also known as Jason Dent the rodeo clown from Humeston, Iowa. Dent has an exquisite personality that landed himself on the CBS TV reality show Big Brother. In addition, he regularly performs under the lights of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeos nationwide and in Canada.

Jason Dent was born and raised as a southern Iowa farm kid with an extraordinary love for agriculture and animals. He majored in agricultural business and rodeoed at Northwest Missouri State University. He rode bulls for 14 years before meeting his best friend, Ole. Dent trained Ole, a double-bred, wrangler riverts bucking bull, to ride like a horse. When Ole was a two-year-old, he wasn’t that interested in bucking, so Dent bought him and spent another two years training him. Dent said he coaxed Ole with wafer cookies during training.

Ole the bull and Whistle-Nut have been performing internationally for years. As a team, they have captured the hearts of everyone they come in contact with.

Dent is a professional athlete, stuntman, comedian, jokester, and former semi-pro bull rider. German family builds successful Broken Heart Rodeo Company It all started 29 years ago when Broken Heart Rodeo Company put on their first Bull Wars in Morgan, UT. With little knowledge or experience, but high hopes, a very successful rodeo career began.

Residing in West Haven, Ben and Jennifer German are the proud parents of three children, two sons in-law, and three grandchildren — all of whom work the rodeos. German makes his living from rodeo, while Jennifer has been a pharmacy technician for 17 years, currently working at Bowman’s in Kaysville.

Jordan (28), the oldest of the German children, is the Regional Operations Director for Sal Management and is married to Chase Heiner who is the Operations Manager for Golden Spike Event Center and picks up all the rodeos. Chase and Jordan have three children; Rylen, Dallie Jo, and Bronc.

The Germans second child, Ashton (25), is the Fair Director for Weber County. She times and secretaries all the rodeos while her husband, Chase Wilson (26), fights bulls for Broken Heart.

Wyatt (23), the youngest of the bunch, graduated from Dickinson State University in North Dakota and is living his dream guiding hunts in Canada.

Besides all the family additions, Broken Heart has added several hundred head of bucking horses, bulls, stock trailers, a semi-truck, trailer rig, and has dozens of rodeos lined up each year across the Mountain West. Broken Heart Rodeo has gone from the newest stock contractor in Utah, to arguably one of the best.

Over the 29-year period, German has produced an enviable resume of success. In the past 18 years, his stock has won 79-of- 88 Top Stock Awards in the Intermountain Professional Rodeo Association (IMPRA) and Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association (RMPRA).

German also has been named “Stock Contractor of the Year” for the past 18

‘Chefs’ prepare for Beef Feast Aug. 24 The Sanpete Cattlemen’s Association welcomes everyone to the annual Beef Feast – a traditional steak fry featuring some of the best steaks found in Sanpete County.

Beef producers enjoy showcasing their products for friends and neighbors in Sanpete as well as to visitors to the area making the Beef Feast a fair tradition for many families.

The Beef Feast, scheduled for noon, Saturday, Aug. 25, in front of the Exhibit Building, will include 400 succulent New York strip steaks. Side dishes vary from year-to-year and when the steaks are gone the feast is over. The cost is $10.

Willie the Clown, a fair entertainment staple LaMar Williams was born June 13, 1926, and grew up in Spanish Fork, UT; where he began clowning in parades as a child.

In the early 1970s, he started clowning again as Willie the Classic Clown. He donned an old tuxedo, top hat and added roller skates. Later he included other costumes and genres including Hobo, and his McWillie costume, that had a touch of the Irish.

Willie was one of the founders of Western Region Clown Association. For many years, he taught Clownology at the University of Utah, where he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Mirth. Willie enjoyed teaching balloon magic, costuming and makeup classes at National Clown Conventions and meeting clowns from all over the United States.

In 1989, after retiring from working for Salt Lake County, LaMar and his wife, Dorothy, decided they wanted to move from the big city to a smaller, warmer place. They were headed to southern Utah to house hunt, when they stopped to visit a son who was attending Snow College. They fell in love with Sanpete County and decided to make Manti their home.

At this time, Willie was supposed to retire from clowning, but he had a hard time hanging up his red nose and putting away his oversized clown shoes, so he continued entertaining in his new area. He held mini-workshops for the community, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

He continued entertaining at birthday parties, family reunions, promotions and parades. He performed at many county fairs around Utah and neighboring states. He always loved clowning at the Scandinavian Festival and the Sanpete County Fair, where he could entertain neighbors and friends.

When Willie first arrived in Sanpete County, he performed in parades on roller skates. He also drove the Palilsade Pal’s train. As he aged, he switched to a decorated toddler bicycle. When he could no longer ride his bike, he was seen in parades riding a modified riding lawn mower/clown car.

In 2017, while at the county fair parade, a spectator asked Willie’s daughter if he was going to be in the parade. The daughter replied, “Sadly, Willie is really slowing down. He is 91 years old now so he won’t be able to make it.” During this conversation, calliope music grew louder as Willie whisked by on his clown car waving and greeting the crowd.

From the time Willie moved into Sanpete County until he passed away July 10, 2018, he never missed a year doing what he loved, entertaining at the county fair.

A tribute to Willie the Clown will be held at 9:45 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24 at the pavilion next to the Exhibition Building.

LaMar Williams, above, also known as Willie the Clown, sadly passed away in July 2018.

He brought smiles to many faces to both children and adults alike with his balloon magic and entertained many during parades throughout Sanpete County.

For many years, Willie the Clown could be seen throughout the county during parades on his roller skates, clown car or as the engineer on the Palisade Pal’s Train. He spent his life bringing smiles to all with his balloon magic and his unmistakable costume.

The adult volleyball tournament looks to be fun and cool on a hot Saturday, Aug. 24, beginning at 9 a.m., during the Sanpete County Fair, Manti. It will be a riot, so get a team organized and register right away.

Volleyball is fun, just add water, make mud for added excitement It may be one of the most slippery, sloppy, riotous games in the mud volleyball tournament which begins at 9 a.m., Aug. 24, at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds on the west side of the fairgrounds, right behind Manti’s swimming pool.

This will be a true double elimination tournament. Teams consist of up to eight members. Each participant will receive a T-shirt. The cost is $50 per team. A prize will be awarded to the winning team.

30th Annual Car Show revs up at Sanpete County Fair For 30 years the Sanpete County Fair has featured a car show. Come, take a walk down memory lane and view all the original vehicles and tractors on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Sanpete County Fairgrounds, 500 North Main Street in Manti.

Hot Wheels racing Those who visit the car show will also have the opportunity to participate in Hot Wheels car racing on a race track. Cost is $3 and includes a new car or bring your own car to race down the track. Race times will vary, check with the operators to determine when the next races begin.

Two other contests will take place at about 1 p.m. There will be a pickle eating contest followed by a Root Beer guzzling contest. For more information, check with the car show operators.

Car Show Entry Information Those who have vehicles to show are encouraged to participate. There’s a class for all vehicles. Early registration is $20, but must be received no later than Friday night, Aug. 23, during the BBQ dinner. History of Sanpete County Where in the world did Sanpete County get its name? It all started when the Ute Chief Wakara invited pioneers to settle the San Pitch valley, named after a tribe of hunter-gatherer Indians.

Wakara claimed that the Great Spirit had appeared to him in a dream, telling him to welcome the white men. Later, Wakara engaged his guests in the infamous “Walker War” from 1853-54. The Black Hawk War, named for another Ute leader, also disrupted county settlement from 1865-68.

Eventually, the San Pitch name was corrupted to Sanpete. Some historians now believe that more than the agricultural skills Wakara claimed to want for himself and his tribe, he was interested in the cattle that the pioneers seemed to take with them everywhere they went.

The county wasn’t the only entity to undergo a name change. Most of the cities within the county have gone through changes in identity since their founding.

Sanpete County is the home of several towns. How they originated and came to be can be an interesting story. The following stories are shortened versions of some of Sanpete’s best known towns.

Mt. Pleasant Mt. Pleasant is known for its 19th-century Main Street buildings, for being home to Wasatch Academy, and for being the largest city in the northern half of the county.

As of the 2010 census, the city population was 3,260.

After taking lumber out of Pleasant Creek Canyon in late 1851, a band of Mormon colonists from Manti, led by Madison D. Hambleton, returned in the spring of 1852 to establish the Hambleton Settlement near the present site of Mt. Pleasant.

During the Wakara War, the small group of settlers relocated to Spring Town and later to Manti for protection. The old settlement was burned down by local Native Americans, so when a large colonizing party from Ephraim and Manti returned to the area in 1859, a new, permanent town site was laid out in its present location.

Each town in Sanpete County had to begin somewhere, by someone, perhaps for a certain reason settlers came here. bers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormon converts, from Scandinavia, United Kingdom, and the eastern U.S. By 1880, Mt. Pleasant was the county’s largest city, with a population of 2,000, more than 72 percent of its married adults were foreign born.

This ethnic diversity had an important impact on village life during the 19th and early 20th centuries. For decades, five languages were commonly spoken in town, creating confusing and sometimes amusing communication problems.

The settlement and development of Mt. Pleasant followed the typical pattern for Mormon towns of the period. A squareshaped town site was surveyed, eventually containing about 100 city blocks, lots were drawn and the land was distributed among the population.

Under the direction of James Russell Ivie (1802–1866), a fort of adobe walls and log cabins was built. Pleasant Creek ran through

the fort and farming was done outside of its walls.

Around the time that Ivie was killed in the Blackhawk War, by Indians who had declined to participate in the settlement of the earlier Wakara War, the town had acquired its present name.

By the time the final peace treaty with the Indians was signed in Bishop Seeley’s house on Mt. Pleasant Main Street in 1872, bringing to an end to this conflict, many settlers had already erected homesteads outside of the fort.

Although the town site is large in scale, the density is relatively low due to the original layout allowing for only four lots per block.

The influence of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was felt in all religious, political, economic, educational and social aspects of life in early Mt. Pleasant. Self-sufficiency was a virtue and Please see HISTORY, Page A71

home-grown and home-manufactured food, clothing and furnishings were far more available than rarely found imported items.

Some of the first industries included hide tanning, shoemaking, blacksmithing, basket making and freighting. Eventual modernization brought such improvements as the Deseret Telegraph in 1869, The Pyramid newspaper in 1890 and a telephone system in 1891.

Sawmills and flour mills were built, irrigation systems were dug and a municipal government was created to oversee public laws and improvements. The city was incorporated in 1868, a year after the first co-operative store was founded, and started what became a burgeoning commercial district.

Upon the arrival of the Rio Grande Western Railway in 1890, both the local population and the city’s prosperity increased dramatically. By 1900, Mt. Pleasant had grown to nearly 3,000 persons, the largest size reached by any city in Sanpete County to that time and the city had earned one of

its nicknames, “Hub City.”

The town’s new-found wealth became immediately apparent in a building boom which saw the replacement of small, woodframe commercial buildings with much more impressive, architect-designed stone and brick structures such as the 1888 Sanpete County Co-op, the Gentile store which competed with the ZCMI, or Mormon, store.

The resulting Main Street district is so architecturally distinctive that the twoblock-long area has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Equally striking are the Victorian churches, schools, and residences which replaced the simpler adobe and log buildings of the pioneer period.

Mt. Pleasant has long been considered the most diverse city in the county, in part because of the liberal Mormons and the Protestant groups which challenged the dominant Mormon population in the late nineteenth century.

Liberal Hall, built on Main Street in 1875, and Wasatch Academy, Utah’s oldest surviving private boarding school, established

by Presbyterians in the same year, remain

as visible and functional testaments of the city’s historic and ongoing diversity.

The 20th century brought continued changes and improvements to the face of the “Queen City,” its most popular nickname.

The commercial and residential districts continued to fill with fine buildings bespeaking the prosperity of the community.

By 1912 the first high school, North Sanpete High School, had been completed. The year 1912 also brought the Armory Hall, while the Elite Theater was constructed as a “fireproof” building in 1913. It burned down seven decades later.

In 1917 a fine Carnegie Library was built in a modern architectural style. The Marie Hotel was erected in 1920 and a large cheese factory came on the scene in 1930, the same year that bus service came to town.

The completion of U. S. Highway 89 in 1936 was a boon needed to soften the impact of the Great Depression. A city hall in 1939 and hospital in 1945, together with new schools and churches, gave Mt. Pleasant a full complement of public buildings.

Indianola Laying at the northeast edge of Thistle Valley, Indianola was organized as a ward and named by Apostle Erastus Snow in 1880.

Then it numbered over 100 members-half Indians, half Whites.

North Sanpeters had herded livestock in the valley and even homesteaded there before Brigham Young decided to set up a model Indian farm for Utes not already removed to the Unitah Basin. Eventually the church had to pay $12,000 to induce pioneers to vacate the valley.

Eventually, most of the Utes moved away, died, or simply failed to multiply, so some of the sellers eventually returned to the valley. Most of them lived on their farms rather than locate close to the brick meetinghouse (now a granary) built on the town site. Several years later, in about 2007, a new church meeting house was built to serve the community.

Milburn Milburn occupies a picturesque cove

barely visible from the U.S. 89 scenic overlook near Hilltop. Platted in 1886 on a rocky slope watered by Dry Creek, it was organized as a ward in 1896. The fair number of sawmills already built in canyons above it sparked the choice of name.

Families began homesteading this herd ground of Fairview as early as 1876, so a majority of Milburner’s never lived in the town itself, loosely clustered around a school, church and stone store/dance hall whose walls still stand.

When Dry Creek turned wet and wiped out the town in 1903, the population spread out even more. Eventually so many moved away that the church dissolved the ward and transferred the last 33 members to Fairview in 1961.

Freedom Freedom was settled in 1875 under the name of Draper, which was the name of the families who settled there. The settlement was located along Current Creek south of Fountain Green and north of Wales. In 1877 the Draper’s and other families formed a ward which was renamed Freedom and lasted until 1881.

The arrival of the Martin Van Buren Taylor family eventually required the creation of a new ward in 1897 which lasted until 1926.

The orchards, the best in Sanpete, and the Meadow View Creamery kept the small community going. Freedom is the gateway to beautiful Maple Canyon.

C hester Soon after the homesteading fever hit Sanpete in 1870, polygamists and other farmers from Mt. Pleasant, Moroni and Spring City spread out onto the meadows along the bottomlands of Oak and Canal Creeks below Spring City.

Despite their dispersion they formed a ward (1877) named Chester, shortened by the Post Office from the “Chesterfield” proposed by David Candland, who had immigrated from Chesterfield, England.

We must forgive Candland’s lack of originality. He was only trying to improve the image of the hamlet from its original name: The Bottoms. A meetinghouse, a school, an Allred store and a few houses soon sprang up close to the crossroads at the center of town.

2019 Sanpete County Fair is Bigger, Better, and Bluer This year’s Sanpete County Fair is to be Bigger, Better and Bluer than it ever has been in the past. Many fun activities, events and exhibits will be presented during this two-week fair.

Activities include the Miss Sanpete and Outstanding Teen pageants, many 4-H presentations including a horse show, livestock, small animals and exhibits of all sorts.

Those who like to rodeo will find a junior rodeo and two nights of big time RMPRA rodeo action. Whistle Nut and Ole will provide comic relief and rider safety for the rodeo. Horses will be put to the test during the annual horse pull competition. There will be Cowboy Mounted Shooting and the annual Cattleman’s Association Beef Dinner.

In the mechanized excitement category, motorcycle riders will tackle the Sanpete Extreme Moto and don’t forget the smash and bash demolition derby. Be sure to include the Fireman’s Challenge where water can win and be on the watch for cool vehicles in the car show.

Carnival rides will be at the fair, Fun on the Farm will be open, mud volleyball and mud scramble will be fun, local talent will perform and the pie eating contest will happen.

A live concert featuring Dave Stamey and special guests Manystrings and Co. will provide a musical performance to remember and don’t forget the mammoth parade on Manti Main Street.

The Exhibit Building will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The sheep showmanship classes are at 11:30 a.m., followed by goat showmanship at 2 p.m., in the livestock barn.

Saturday, Aug. 24 The last day of the fair will be full of activities beginning with the Livestock Buyers Breakfast at 8 a.m. and the small animal barn will open. All entries for the Annual Car and Tractor Show will need to be turned in by 10 a.m.

At 9 a.m., the ever-popular Mud Volleyball competition play-offs will take place at the pit. The event is limited to eight teams. To register a team, contact Steve or Tina Roberts at (435) 851-7437 or (435) 851-2550 before Monday, Aug. 19.

A special tribute to Willie the Clown will be held at 9:45 a.m., at the pavilion. It will be followed by the annual Sanpete County Junior Livestock Auction at 10 a.m., at the

Also at 10 a.m., the car and tractor show begins at 500 North Main, Manti. Vehicles will be on display until 4 p.m. when the car show awards will be presented.

Local talent performances will take place at the pavilion from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. At 11 a.m., the Exhibit Building will open and remain open until 8 p.m. Fun on the Farm will be open until 5 p.m.

The Cattlemen’s Association Beef Feast will be held at 12 noon, at the pavilion. Cost is $10 per plate. Also at noon, Brown’s Amusements midway and carnival will open, while over in the small animal barn, the small animal awards will be presented.

At 1 p.m., the horse pull competition will be held in the arena. At 2 p.m., the pie eating contest will be held in the pavilion.

Then at 3 p.m., watch the kids, ages 3 to 10, dash for prizes in the Mud Scramble at the pit next to Fun on the Farm.

Magnuson set to anchor rodeos, demolition derby Monroe Magnuson will again serve as the anchorman announcing both rodeos and the demolition derby for the Sanpete County Fair. Attendees to the RMPRA rodeos on Thursday and Saturday, Aug. 22 and 24, along with the demolition derby on Friday, Aug. 23, will be guided through all the action and excitement by Magnuson.

About Magnuson Monroe Magnuson has made a living doing many different jobs in his life, including working as an FSA auditor, convenience store owner, brand inspector, livestock sales manager, graphics designer, cattle judge, equipment operator, veterinary technician, labor force supervisor and a rancher. But of all the career paths he has

followed, none drives his passion like the job of announcer.

In 2008, he answered a call from a longtime cattle producer and friend expecting to talk about the cattle business, state of the beef business, politics and kids and such, but the result of that phone call was far different than he had ever expected.

After the regular cowboy banter and ribbings between the two, the caller commented “Monroe, my wife and I have decided you need a career change.”

“I didn’t really know how to react when he said that, so I just asked what he meant,” explains Magnuson.

“My friend explained that they were in a bind and hunting for a rodeo announcer

and they thought I should give it a whirl.

I am always up for something new and a challenge, so I said okay.”

That first performance was “baptism by fire,” he said, “There were several injuries, and I had no idea how to handle them or explain to the crowd what was going on.”

But the emotional rush was more than Magnuson could predict and he was hooked.

For the next three years he became the voice of the “Invitational Rodeo” at Panguitch.

In addition, he began booking rodeos anywhere he could convince the rodeo contractors and committees to hire him.

was five, his father died of injuries incurred from a horse accident on the family’s ranch. “Because my Dad and Mom were in the process of building their cattle operation at the time of my father’s accident and death,” he says, “I spent my youth working with my mother and older brother doing what needed done to make the cattle operation work.”

“I was heavily involved in 4-H, riding club and scouting,” he says, “but I never really had the opportunity to do things like rodeo, although it was something I think I would have wanted to do when I was younger.”

While Magnuson now operates a cattle operation of his own and grew up in a ranching family, rodeo was not anything in which he had ever participated.

“I did the regular chores and duties that every other cattleman does every day caring for his livestock,” he says, “and I also had the opportunity to show and sell beef cattle all over the nation. I loved to watch rodeo.”

He relates, “I remember as a kid going to watch rodeos and soaking everything up about the production and how it could have been changed or what was cool and done well but through all of that, it never occurred to me to be involved in rodeo,” explains Magnuson.

nity that I truly enjoy, and a great opportunity to educate about, and tell the story of a way of life, the cowboy way of life, that I love and believe in,” he said.

“When my father was injured, the community in which we lived rallied around us to make sure we were taken care of,” Magnuson related. “But it was the rodeo community that stepped up to the plate and got things moving.”

The year his father died, the Southern Utah Rodeo Association Finals was scheduled for his home town. The rodeo committee dedicated the finals that year to his father, who was the secretary, and the committee donated all the proceeds to help Magnuson’s mother pay the bills.

“I believe the American cowboy is respected and maybe even idolized,” he comments. “They say everybody loves a cowboy, and if that is so, it is because of what he represents, integrity, grit and determination and a human heart for those in need. That is a story I want to tell.”

Since that 2008 “baptism by fire” rodeo, Magnuson has announced rodeos, derbies, moto-cross and monster truck shows throughout the Western United States.

In 2011, he was honored to be selected as one of three announcers for the National Finals Rodeo of the National Little Britches Rodeo Association (NLBRA) in Pueblo, CO; and in 2012, was selected to announce as the lead announcer at the NLBRA National Finals.

Magnuson has had the opportunity to announce the finals of the Western States Bucking Bull Association in 2014 and has been voted twice as announcer of the year in the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association (RMPRA).

The Magnuson’s make their home in Castle Dale, where he operates a cattle operation, is the laborer supervisor for Emery Water Conservation District, and stays busy traveling to announce rodeos, demolition derby’s and monster truck shows.

He usually takes his family with him on the road, including his wife, Amber, his best buddy and son, Zayne, age 13; and princess Zoee, age nine.

Utah Horse Pullers Association returns to Sanpete fairgrounds Don’t miss the opportunity to see real horsepower in person and witness how farming was done prior to the use of modern day tractors at the Utah Horse Pullers Association event during the Sanpete County Fair beginning at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24.

Since tractors and equipment have taken over the farming industry, pulling matches have become a sporting event. Seeing matched pairs of horses and the harness gear used is a sight to behold.

The event is free, so just find a good seat in the grandstand, settle in and enjoy. Since there is no cover on the grandstand yet, spectators are encouraged to bring large umbrellas or a pop-up canopy to keep off the afternoon sun.

There are three weight classes in the competition: lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight. Prize money is paid to winners of each weight class.

The event has been a crowd-pleasing event in past years and is a worthwhile event to experience. Association members are personable and will entertain questions about the horses, their

Fair board anticipates improvements The old grandstand is now gone, after being demolished in 2016 for safety reasons.

The new grandstand is now in place. The next big improvement is to build a large building to house concessions, restrooms and a ticket booth, which needs funding.

For now, restroom trailers will be located behind the new grandstand.

Food vendors will be onsite for a wide choice of eating options.

The Jr. Livestock youth did a fundraiser and has enough funds to build new wash stations in the livestock barn and make some needed repairs.

The fair board is anticipating new improvements to the grounds to make the best fair around. They welcome all to the 2019 Sanpete County Fair!

Wales The small mining town of Wales was named for the country of the immigrants that were sent there by Brigham Young in 1859 to mine the “rock that burns.” An Indian named Tabiyuna, a prominent Ute, had showed Young a small sample.

Young knew it was coal and asked if any of his group knew how to mine the coal. The immigrants were sent to the west side hills to set up mines.

The community’s original name was Coal Bed, but was changed to Wales in 1869.

There once was a railroad depot and it was an important and busy mining center. The mines and town were abandoned when more productive mines were discovered in Scofield. Many of the present residents are descendants of the original miners.

A four-wheel drive road up Wales Canyon leads to open meadows on the top and a dirt road down the other side to Chicken Creek Campground and into Levan.

Centerfield Centerfield was first known as Skin Town.

It seems that about 1880, a new method for tanning cowhides was discovered and implemented in New York. At the same time, Sanpete suffered a terrible winter with such deep snow that many cattle couldn’t find enough forage and died.

In order to keep their operations from being a total loss, the ranchers skinned the cows, used the new tanning method on the hides, and hung them out on their fences to dry. The fact that all the fences were draped with cow hides led to the name “Skin Town”.

It was also called South Gunnison or Twin Town. When the town was incorporated in 1907, the residents chose the more dignified name of Centerfield because of the community’s central location.

Centerfield is an 1860s offshoot of Gunnison that evolved two miles south on US 89. Gunnison Field or Gunnison South was a natural site for farmers who worked small “squatters rights” plots of about five acres with oxen and hand plows.

After the Indian troubles subsided, log and adobe houses began to appear. A late 1876 petition to ‘build a school convenient to our location’ was an early sign of inde-

pendence from the mother colony.

In 1882, a log cabin was built to serve as school, church and social hall. The 1886-87 church was built of stone and a front tower was added in 1897. Community spirit was strong by that time, and Canute Peterson chose a committee of four who named the place for its location in the fields between Gunnison and Axtell.

Axtell Settled about 1874 by John Bosshardt, who raised the first barley and alfalfa and Lars Fjeldsted, who ran a co-op heard of sheep, and Axel Finarsen, a Danish bachelor. The town spread out on an east-west axis along Willow Creek, which was the area’s name until the railroad and post offices arrival in 1891.

The place has an expansive open flavor reminiscent of the Midwest, with irrigated grains and alfalfa sweeping eastward to the foothills of the Wasatch Plateau.

Axteller’s have a keen appreciation of their “peace and quiet” and a sense of “in between” stemming from their county border location.

Notable sites include historic and contemporary salt mines in the foothills east and west. Willow Creek Reservoir, a haven for wildlife, is about 5.5 miles east of town behind the foothills, and a graded road continues to Skyline Drive near 10,984-foot Musinia Peak.

Fayette Settled by five families from Springville who arrived by ox team on April 8, 1861.

After finding Hog Wallow (Gunnison) too crowded, they backtracked five miles to establish Warm Creek. Three families soon left, but the Joseph Bartholomew and James Mellor families stuck it out and descendants remain today.

One pioneer described the site as a lush

meadow paradise abounding in wildlife.

Chief Arapeen extracted two fat oxen for ceding the life-giving spring and some calves for the meadowlands.

Willow-covered dugouts and wagon boxes first provided shelter, followed by log cabins and later houses of local stone and brick. Retreats were common and log buildings were moved inside the Gunnison fort during the Blackhawk War of the 1860s.

Apostle Orson Hyde urged the name change to Fayette for the New York town where The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized.

Fairview Founded in 1859, the town’s high elevation provided a fair enough view of the valley to inspire the choice of name in 1864. The first settlers from Mt. Pleasant had named the site North Bend.

Fairview became the center of a wealthy agricultural district which in 1900 supported four general stores, one furniture store, one harness shop, two hotels, one butcher shop, a plaining mill, half a dozen steam sawmills, situated at different points in the mountains, good public schools and a

great number of comfortable homes.

The town is home to the Fairview Museum of History and Art, full of historical data, artifacts pictures and artwork and a full scale replica of a nearly fully-intact Columbian mammoth that was unearthed on the nearby Wasatch Plateau in 1988 while excavating the Huntington Reservoir. The quality of the find, plus the altitude at which it was found, make this mammoth unique.

Fairview Canyon is a great place to ride ATVs, mountain bike, fish, hunt, horseback ride, camp, snowkite and snowmobile. Fairview is the gateway to the famous Skyline Drive, a 75-mile scenic 4X4 mountain road that offers hundreds of miles of outdoor recreational opportunities.

Numerous trout-filled ponds, lakes and streams can be found along Skyline Drive.

Huntington Reservoir boasts a large tiger trout population. The Huntington-Eccles Scenic Byway begins in Fairview. The drive heads east up the canyon on Highway 31 through the Manti La-Sal National Forest.

Canyon, east of Nephi. It began as a popular campground for Salt Creek and San Pitch travelers during the 1850s before the Johnson’s and other families from Santaquin in Utah Valley settled it. Lying just below the Divide and Mt. Nebo, it had a green fountain named “Big Springs” which was second to no other spring in the Sanpete Valley.

A Utah Division of Wildlife Resources fish hatchery is located on the edge of Fountain Green and visitors are welcome to tour the facility most business days. The hatchery hosts activities for this area during Utah’s annual Bald Eagle Day on the second Saturday in February.

In 1849, as groups of Mormon colonists began to immigrate to the fertile Sanpete Valley, many of them camped at a verdant location in the northwestern end of the valley known as Uintah Springs. A decade later, George W. Johnson, Santaquin, was granted permission to establish a permanent settlement on the popular campgrounds.

In July 1859, Albert Petty surveyed a town

site, laying out 20 blocks of about 4.5 acres each. Other pioneers soon joined the Johnson family, building log homes and, in 1860, a multipurpose log meetinghouse.

In the same year, an irrigation channel was plowed to a canyon in the San Pitch Mountains just west of town, and the growth of Fountain Green was well under way.

Fountain Green’s name is still a fitting description of the lush, green hillside village abundantly watered by what is now called Big Springs and Silver Creek which it forms.

Artesian wells and later pumped water provided an ample water supply, allowing the development of agriculture and stock raising, the staple industries of the town from 1860 to the present.

In 1865, a sawmill was constructed, followed in 1866 by an adobe meetinghouse and in 1867 by a flour mill. Due to hostilities and one death during the Black Hawk War of 1865-67, a rock fort was erected in 1866.

After peace was made with the San Pitch Indians, growth and progress continued unhindered and major crops of wheat, oats and potatoes were harvested.

Although Fountain Green was the first

Sanpete community to receive the railroad in the 1880s, it did not take full advantage of this opportunity, being the only major town in the region to drop in population between 1880 and 1890.

Experiencing less fluctuation in size than most other Sanpete villages, Fountain Green reached its zenith of about 1,150 people in 1920, about twice its size of 578 in 1980. It had a population of 602 according to the 1990 census.

Fountain Green’s flourishing in the early 20th century, during which time it was considered the “richest town” in the county, was due mostly to its successful wool growing industry.

Expanding from a cooperatively-owned herd of Spanish Merino sheep in the 1880s, sheep growers greatly enhanced their profits after upgrading their herds with high wool producing Rambouillet stock.

In 1902, 40,850 sheep were owned by 26 growers, for an average of 1,571 head of sheep each, although some owned far more than others. The Fountain Green Woolgrowers Association was founded in 1908 and bePlease see HISTORY, Page 86

came the dominant group in town, with the possible exception of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members they shared in common.

The association created the nationally famous Jericho Pool of 100,000 sheep, giving Fountain Green its nickname, “Wool City.”

A celebration known as the “City of Lambs Days,” is still held annually, although the sheep industry has diminished in importance over the years.

In 1987, 47 percent of the farms in northwest Sanpete County raised turkeys, while only 26 percent produced sheep, revealing the economic shift from Fountain Green to Moroni, the center of the county’s turkey industry.

From 1869 when a Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) store was established along the main highway, a small string of general stores, shops and public and religious buildings has gradually filled in the modest business district.

ZCMI was initially a profitable venture, delivering a 68 percent dividend in 1870, its first full year of operation. In time, other private co-ops and general mercantile were founded to offer ZCMI some competition.

A general store built of rock in 1880 with an 1884 dance hall and theater addition was the most imposing of the private commercial structures in the early days. By 1885, Fountain Green formally organized its city government, electing Reese R. Llewellyn as the first town president.

A substantial Mormon meetinghouse, built over a 30-year period beginning in 1880, was the most prominent religious structure in 19th-century Fountain Green.

A tithing office built in 1906 and a churchbuilt theater and dance hall erected in 1917 allowed for expanded economic and social activity.

The influence of the Mormon Church was pervasive, as it remains today. Members of other religious faiths have lived in Fountain Green during much of its history, although no group has managed to establish a permanent foothold. A varied ethnic makeup also helped to shape the town’s early nature, with 65.3 percent of its adult married population being foreign-born in 1880.

The 20th century brought incorporation as a city in 1910, plus several new improvements for Fountain Green, including a large elementary school in 1907, an improved water system in 1913 (updated in 1935), a high school in 1920, a city park in 1935 and a state fish hatchery in 1939-40.

A drive down Fountain Green’s Main Street and up the hilly lanes of the square blocks to the west helps one understand the community’s story. An outstanding collection of red brick homes stands witness to the town’s once-thriving brick industry.

The two-story elementary school and the

fine brick tithing office on Main Street also remain along with impressive residences such as the Hans Peter Olsen home (on the National Register). Many of the log, adobe and brick houses show the varied architecture and the ingenuity and talent of their builders.

Gunnison The establishment of Gunnison in 1862 resulted from the resettlement and merging of two earlier communities, each built up in 1859 along the lower Sanpitch River in upper Please see HISTORY, Page 87

Gunnison Valley.

A group of settlers from Sanpete County had started a village on the south bank of the river at Chalk Hill Point about two miles east of the eventual town. At about the same time, a group of colonists from Springville and other places formed a settlement about three miles west of Chalk Hill. They called the place Kearns Camp after their leader, Mormon Bishop H. H. Kearns.

Simple houses were erected at each location, with the intention of creating permanent communities. The impetus for settlement in the area had come from Brigham Young after his tour from Manti to the Sevier Valley and the southern colonies in May 1850.

During a return visit in 1862, Young saw the limitations of the swampy area, which was termed “too muddy for a hog’s wallow;” he advised the people to move up to the bench area, where a new town was built.

The town was named in honor of government explorer Captain John Gunnison, who was killed with six of his men by Indians while in the Sevier Valley area in 1853.

Edward Fox surveyed the town site in rectangular eight-acre blocks and James Mellet erected the first house as the pioneers dismantled and carted their earlier structures to the new site in late 1862.

They were now a long distance from water, so the first public task was to dig a ditch from the river to the bench-top town. Early settlement efforts were hampered by difficulties with Indians during the Black Hawk War. Although a few settlers died in skirmishes, an unexpected benefit occurred in April 1867 when some of the people evacuated from the Sevier County colonies relocated permanently to Gunnison.

Construction was facilitated after 1863 by the construction of a vertical “pit-saw” sawmill, followed soon after by a horse-powered circular sawmill. A blacksmith shop was started in 1867 by Lorentz Dastrup. Early structures were erected by stone mason Christ Tollestrup, adobe craftsmen Eric Larsen and Harmon Christensen, and carpenter William Christensen.

Concurrent with town building was the commencement of farming. A committee divided up the land, drew up rules and distributed the land to settlers. The first irrigation system was improved and expanded throughout the valley. Irrigation companies were founded and dams, reservoirs and canals were built.

The society of Mormon pioneers was formally organized with Joseph S. Horne being sent from Salt Lake City to serve as bishop in 1868. Young and progressive, he directed the creation of a cooperative store, the opening of a rock-salt mine, and the formation of the Farmers’, Gardeners’ and Foresters’ Club.

In 1876, Horne was acknowledged for his role in managing “the building of schools, meeting and mercantile and private houses, grist and sawmills, salt boilers, in improvement of roads, enlargement of farming lands, extension of planting of trees and other laudable pursuits of home industry.”

Like that of the other villages in Sanpete County, Gunnison’s survival has depended on sustaining an agrarian economy. In the

19th century, irrigation brought vegetable crops and sugar beets.

The success of sugar as an export crop led to the construction of a sugar beet factory in the valley.

Grain crops, alfalfa, and truck farming, together with dairy products, turkeys, sheep and especially beef cattle, have kept the city viable in the 20th century.

With the coming of the railroad, Gunnison’s fortunes prospered and the city’s population more than doubled in the decade ending in 1900. As it grew, Gunnison developed as the commercial center of the valley, featuring flour and feed mills, a co-op store, general and specialty stores and the Gunnison Valley Bank.

Religious, civic and educational facilities were built as the city expanded, including several impressive Mormon and Presbyterian structures in the mid-1880s, a dance hall in 1896, and a new city hall and rock school in 1899.

The telegraph had arrived in 1882 and Gunnison officially became a town in 1893. The turn of the century brought the first telephone to town, and in 1910 a new water system was installed and the first power plant was built.

By 1921, Gunnison and the surrounding environs had grown sufficiently to build a separate high school, a one-story brick facility erected on the east side of Main Street between the south of town and nearby Centerfield.

The second half of the 20th century ushered in similar improvements, including a new state prison facility built north of town.

Manti City The oldest town in Sanpete County is Manti. Brigham Young sent the first settlers to Manti after he received an invitation by Ute Chief Walkara to send people down to the Sanpitch area to teach the Utes how to farm. The original company of 50 pioneer families arrived in the winter of 1849.

The pioneers, whose first camp was established on what is now Temple Hill, spent their first winter enduring hardships of scant food and clothing, hostile Indians, and makeshift housing.

Settlers were forced to use wagons and dugouts for protection against the severe cold and the 700 Indians camped about a mile away. About half of their cattle froze to death and they were unable to get more food and supplies from Salt Lake City.

Winter was not the only problem, as spring approached the ground thawed and the pioneers were faced with hundreds of rattlesnakes. Miraculously not one of the settlers died from snakebite.

Isaac Morley, the leader of this pioneer group was given the honor of naming the town. He suggested ‘Manti’ as a good name, and so the name was adopted. Manti is a town mentioned in the Book of Mormon.

Mayfield After Manti was settled, the land to the south was surveyed and canyons along the mountains were called Six Mile, Nine-Mile, and Twelve-Mile canyons, named for their relative distances from the Manti Temple.

The land at the mouth of Twelve-Mile Canyon had been an Indian Farm reservation known as Arrapine Valley or Arropeen, named for a brother of Chief Walkara.

Mads Sorenson, Carl Olsen and Simon Hansen, scouted the site on a logging foray in 1870. The next spring they cut meadow hay, built cabins and began water division.

Other families joined them by 1873 when they formed a United Order Cooperative Society on the north bank of the creek. The settlement was named Mayfield because of the beauty Mother Nature so lavishly displayed in the month of May. Early in spring of 1875, 21 families moved from Ephraim and settled on the south side

of the creek. They called this new settlement “New London.” The two settlements combined under the name of Mayfield when the first Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized on July 4, 1877.

The first house in Mayfield was built by M. P. Sorensen in 1873. Other early settlers were Simon Hansen, Christian Hansen, Hans Tuft and C. A. Madsen. Twenty families from Ephraim joined the colony in 1875 and John Williams opened the first store.

Mayfield is pleasantly situated on Twelve Mile Creek in the southern part of Sanpete County, about four miles east of Gunnison, which is the nearest railroad station.

It has a municipal water system, a flour mill, a sawmill, a public school, general stores and some minor business enterprises.

It was incorporated in 1909 and in 1918 had an estimated population of 550.

by John Williams, who later sold to the people and the business was incorporated as the Mayfield Co-op.

The affairs were operated for some years under the wise management of Ole C. Olsen, president of the company and later

by Joseph Christiansen. In 1894 the company sold out and in a history of Sanpete County published in 1898, the store was then owned by Henry Jensen “who operates a north and south branch, and does a good business.”

At that time (1898) there were three stores, the third owned by O. C. Larsen; two blacksmith shops, owned by Arthur H. Campbell and Jorgeu Knudsen; a fine 40-barrel roller mill, owned by the Willardson family; three well-conducted district schools, under able instructors; a Relief Society hall, used for amusements and religious services, and a ward of the Latter-day Saints under the wise counsel of Bishop Parley Christiansen.

The population consisted of farmers and

stock raisers and numberd probably 800 people, “noted for their honesty, industry and enterprise in conquering the desert and building magnificent homes in this mountain vale.”

Moroni Moroni was founded by George Washington Bradley in 1859 and was settled by families from Nephi, but it had a real identity crisis. It went through the names Sanpitch, Mego, Little Rome and Duck Springs before Sanpete’s first probate judge named it Moroni after a Nephite Prophet in The Book of Mormon.

Moroni sits midway between Nephi and Manti on the most pronounced “North Bend” of the San Pitch River. Families from Nephi moved there early in 1859. High water in 1862 forced the town’s founders to move away from the river site and spread north over the rolling hills, a setting best seen when approaching Moroni from the south.

For water, they tapped the San Pitch farther east with an intricate and expensive system of canals and ditches that stretched from Mt. Pleasant to Fountain Green’s south fields. Reaching out in all directions, the city

was big enough by 1891 to support an “opera house” that seated 1,000 persons. That opera house has been renovated and used regularly today.

Sterling Sterling was originally named Pettyville, the town was surveyed by James Snow in 1881 after securing rights to former Indian reservation land from the government.

Most of the Pettyville settlers moved to this higher bench above Six Mile Creek, six miles south of Manti, and the main road was eventually rerouted to service them. Scandinavian-style stone mileage markers once signed the old route along the San Pitch.

Teacher Gus Clark won the then considerable sum of $5 in a contest to name the place. One sore loser was so vexed that he slugged Clark, tarnishing the town’s “sterling” reputation.

A quiet village with several pioneer adobe houses, the place still maintains a small store that, along with the a warehouse, function as community centers. Sterling is the gateway to Palisade State Park and Six Mile Canyon, which leads to the top of Skyline Drive.

RULES AND REGULATIONS 2019 SANPETE COUNTY FAIR DEMOLITION DERBY RULES APPLIES TO BOTH OLD IRON, TRUCKS AND MINI CARS 1. We reserve the right to refuse entering any vehicle for just cause. All inspectors’ and judges’ decisions are final.

2. Frames and body’s model of passenger car or station wagon may be used. No 73 or older Imperials, Lebarons. No Ambulances, Hearses, Sedagons, Limousines, convertibles or four wheel drives allowed.

Mini car wheel base must not exceed 104” or 1990 and newer cars 108” (measurement taken from center of rear hub to center of front hub). NO modified wheel bases. NO V8 Engines in the mini car class.

3. The hood will remain in original position. Pucks can be removed. No added weight except for the welding. Only one of the following filler materials may be used for welding: Up to 1/2” round steel OR rebar OR 2” x 1/4” flat strap. Doors, hood and trunk must be welded, NO CHAINING OR BOLTING One of the following may be used; stock O.E.M. bumpers off of any passenger car, aftermarket bumpers may be used but a maximum of 5”x 5” x 3/16” square tube. Must be straight open-ended square tube and cannot extend more than 12” outside of frame. In addition, a point may be added using the same material but may not exceed 12” from the back edge of the square tube. Only one bumper bracket per frame rail is allowed this applies to the rear bumper bracket as well. You may use pipe in place of shock tubes, pipe up to 3” O.D. and 1/8" wall and 18" long max pipe must be open on one side. Bumpers can be welded or chained to the frame. Only two chains may be used. Chain may loop through the hood or trunk. Excessive chaining (more than 2 wraps) will not be allowed. No chain may be welded at any point to the frame or body.

4. No kickers may be used. A minimum of a 4” gap if kickers are installed. Kickers are two straight pieces of 2”x 2” pipe or tube that are welded to your front side of your dash bar and go thru the firewall and welded to the top of the frame near the A arm. For 80’s ONLY, if using kickers you will run with the old iron cars.

5. Strapping may be used instead of chain from the top of the hood and the trunk to the bumpers. The strapping cannot be any larger than 2” wide by 1/4” thick. It may not extend past the bumper onto the frame. Only use two straps per hood and trunk. If the strapping is any bigger than this you will cut it.

6. No painting or undercoating may be used underneath the car. Engine compartment should be grease free.

7. Only air may be used to inflate your tires.

8. All cars must exhibit the ability to stop before entering the arena. If a car loses its braking ability it will be subject to disqualification.

9. Any engine and transmission combination may be used in any car, but must be mounted within 5” of the original motor, must be mounted securely. Distributor protectors or full engine cradles are not allowed. You may cut a hole in the firewall to accommodate the engine within reason. However, it must be covered to prevent a fire hazard.

10. Holes left in the firewall from removing the dash and heater must be covered to prevent fire hazards.

11. No holes will be allowed in the floor of the car except to accommodate the transmission shifter, fuel and transmission lines and wiring. Shifters may be welded or bolted. Patching holes is for safety not August 1, 2019 — 91
