Orem philanthropists named Freedom Festival grand marshals LINDSAY WILCOX

ordPerfect founder and longtime Orem resident Alan Ashton says he looked forward to some good friends visiting him and his wife, Karen, at their home in May, but he didn’t know what they had planned.

“We were very honored and surprised to be named the grand marshals of this year’s Freedom Festival,” Alan Ashton said. “It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate the freedom of America and represent the community.”

The parents of 11 children and more than 60 grandchildren, Alan and Karen Ashton have enjoyed participating in the Freedom Festival with their family for years.

“When we’ve been in other places on the Fourth of July, we really miss the great celebration with the parade and the fireworks. We think the celebration we’re able to do as a community in the Provo and Orem area is absolutely wonderful,” Alan Ashton said.

“We have family in Texas who have come up here specifically for the festival.”

“We love the parade, love the fireworks and love the

balloons. It’s a great family time,” she said. “This is an opportunity to celebrate the stories of our country and to honor the men and women who made it possible for us

to exercise freedom.”

Alan Ashton earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Utah. He taught at Brigham Young University before co-founding the WordPerfect Corporation in 1994.

When Novell acquired WordPerfect in 1995, Alan and Karen Ashton founded Thanksgiving Point in Lehi.

Today, the nonprofit complex includes the 55-acre Ashton Gardens, Museum of Natural Curiosity, Museum of Ancient Life, Farm Country and Golf Club. Karen Ashton also founded the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival that is now held in Lehi.

Alan Ashton served as a mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in eastern Canada. They have also served as temple president and matron at the Provo Utah Temple until 2016.

The Ashtons were also honored in 2017 by the Utah Valley Chapter of Brigham Young University Management Society with the Pioneer in Leadership Award for their role as “exemplary executives.”

ou won’t “Apologize” for a lowkey Independence Day celebration this year. Grammy-nominated band OneRepublic is set to headline the 2018 Stadium of Fire event, held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, in LaVell Edwards Stadium.

The Colorado natives — including Ryan Tedder, Zach Filkins, Drew Brown and Eddie Fisher — are known for many hit singles, including “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” “Good Life,” “I Lived,” and “Love Runs Out.” OneRepublic has sold more than 10 million copies of “Counting Stars,” and the music video has more than two billion hits on YouTube.

In 2007, OneRepublic released its debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, with modest success. When singer and producer Timbaland rearranged their single “Apologize” with an R&B feel for his album Shock Value, the song became a hit. “Apologize” spent eight consecutive weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 list and sold five million copies in the United States. The song was certified more than twice in six countries worldwide.

OneRepublic recently returned from an international tour, performing in London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City, to promote its latest album, “Oh My My.” Following their Stadium of Fire performance, OneRepublic will continue the Down the Rabbit Hole Live tour, opening for folk and country group Zac Brown Band during 14 shows across the United States.

“We’re excited to have OneRepublic perform at this year’s Stadium of Fire,” says Paul Warner, executive director of the Freedom Festival. “We’ve tried for years to get them here and were thrilled that we could make it happen this year.”

Unlike in previous years, OneRepublic will be the only band performing.

Warner says they received feedback about giving the headlining artist more time to sing rather than split the time between multiple performers.

After local Boy and Girl Scout troops post the flags, 11-year-old California native Preston Sharp will lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

ommunity leaders and grand marshals Alan and Karen Ashton will appear in the Freedom Festival’s Grand Parade at 9 a.m. July 4 — along with 11-year-old California native Preston Sharp, recognized by President Donald Trump for his work decorating veterans’ graves.

Josh Holt, a Utahn kept prisoner in a Venezuela jail for nearly two years after a trip to visit and marry a woman, will also be in attendance at the parade after his recent release and return to the United States.

Holt returned to Utah in May after he and his Venezuelan wife were locked in a Caracas jail alongside some of the country’s most-hardened criminals — and President Nicolas Maduro’s top opponents — for what the U.S. government argued were bogus charges of stockpiling weapons. Multiple U.S. officials and politicians were involved in Holt’s release and extraction from Venezuela.

Parade attendees will also see 100-year-old Lt. Col. Grant Keeler, a World War II and Vietnam War veteran, and Bun Yom, a Cambodia killing fields survivor and Cambodian Freedom Fighter. Both men will receive awards at the Freedom Awards Gala.

Elmo and the Kung Fu Panda will be flying high during the Grand Parade but the largest Independence Day parade in Utah includes more than giant balloons.

• 12 equestrian units “[Our volunteers] include local ham radio operators at every intersection,” said Dorene Nelson, publicity chairman for the Freedom Festival. “On average, they reunite wandering parents with their kids within two minutes of discovering the separation.”

There are 40 people on the parade planning committee, with volunteers under each individual. There are 100 volunteers alone dedicated

to balloons, then volunteers helping with security before and after the parade, radio operators, banner carriers, band assistance, military planning and more.

In 2017, the festival attracted wide attention after accepting a local LGBTQ group to participate in the parade, and then rescinding the acceptance shortly before the event.

The controversy ensued this year after five LGBTQ groups were denied after Utah County and Provo had updated festival contracts to include nondiscrimination clauses. One day later after the rejections and public uproar, the festival met with the five groups to come to a compromise that would include them in the pa-

It moves south on University Ave to 200 South, then east to 200 East. The parade then heads north to Center Street and concludes by moving east to 900 East.

According to the festival, the construction on University Avenue will not interfere with the parade route and festivities. Construction crews are “pushing to get done or at least they will clean up.”

Construction also had to be cleaned up in 2017 in preparation for the festival’s parade.

Roads along the parade route close at 6:30 a.m. for the Freedom Run. A pre-parade also begins at 8 a.m.

100-year-old WWII veteran honored at the Freedom Awards Gala LINDSAY WILCOX

You’re never too old for a fancy party, and Lt. Col. H. Grant Keeler proves just that.

Keeler, who turns 100 on June 21, will be honored at the 2018 Freedom Awards Gala, held at 6:30 p.m., June 30, in the Utah Valley Convention Center.

Keeler joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and began flying a B-17 bomber when he was stationed in England. In November 1944, his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and went down near the Holland-Germany border. Keeler and three others were captured by German troops. Their navigator was soon executed, most likely because of his Jewish heritage.

For several months, Keeler and other soldiers were imprisoned in a prisoner of war camp, moving to a second camp in Moosburg, Germany, before American troops cap-

tured the town in April 1945.

He continued his service with the Air Force after being freed and later participated in the Berlin Airlift, carrying cargo to U.S. soldiers and their allies in Berlin, Germany.

Keeler served as commander of a forward air controllers unit during the Vietnam War before retiring in 1971 as a lieutenant colonel. He now lives in Layton, Utah.

The Freedom Awards Gala also honors Bun Yom and Donghyun Kim and Jiyeon Song.

Bun Yom

At 14 years old, Yom was torn from his Cambodian home by the Khmer Rouge. Forced to work as a slave laborer in the country’s killing fields, Yom was rescued three years later by the Cambodian Freedom Fighters. He soon joined them, rescuing thousands of other Cambodians. Yom later

emigrated to the United States and currently lives in central Washington. He chronicled his experiences in the book “Tomorrow I’m Dead: How a 17-year-old Killing Field Survivor Became the Cambodian Freedom Army’s Greatest Soldier.”

Donghyun Kim and Jiyeon Song Husband and wife, Kim and Song escaped separately from North Korea to South Korea in 2011 with a broker’s help at the Chinese border. Song recalls traveling by boat, bus, car, and on foot with brokers’ help from Laos to Thailand. She finally arrived in South Korea three months later. Once reunited in Seoul, Kim and Song pursued Christian religions (forbidden in North Korea) before being baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-

ter-day Saints. Kim and Song moved to Provo in 2015 and are currently expecting their first child.

Utah trio GENTRI, which includes singers Bradley Quinn Lever, Casey Elliott and Brad Robins, will perform at the gala as well.

“The Freedom Awards Gala is my favorite event of the festival,” says Dorene Nelson, Freedom Festival publicity chairman. “Every year we learn about and meet incredible people who sacrifice for, defend, and love freedom. This year will follow that wonderful pattern of incredible people who will touch our hearts.”
