Duct Tape regatta thrills community in Salem

August can be miserably hot in Utah with temperatures soaring into the hundreds. There’s no better way for locals to cool off than competing in Salem Days’ famous cardboard duct tape regatta.

Salem residents Shellie and Randon Olsen, the regatta organizers, have hosted the event for about 12 years.

“The first year there were about seven boats, and my kids were in two or three of them,” Shellie said. “We loved it so much that the [Salem Days] committee asked us to take it over.”

Since then, the Olsen’s have organized and participated in the event.

Their kids have competed in almost all the races, and it has become a mustsee for Salem residents. In fact, the event is so popular that there is a limit on how many teams can compete.

“It started 12 years ago with maybe a dozen boats tops, and now we have to cap it at 60 or it would go on all night,” Randon said.

This year, the youth, adult and family competitions are limited to 60 teams, so early registration is advised. Freestyle is open to all.

Each team category, except freestyle,

has two hours to build their boat using only cardboard, two rolls of duct tape and a medium-sized board. Teams competing in freestyle build their boats at home and are free to use as many supplies as they wish. The boats are judged on speed and creativity.

“The fun part is watching people sink. They get all the way out in a cool looking boat, but then end up sinking because it wasn’t sea worthy,” Randon said.

Local businesses also join in on the fun by racing in the freestyle competition or by donating supplies. The Salem Youth Council will be there this year to sell concessions and raise money for their organization. Salem City has also played an integral part in keeping the tradition alive.

“The city of Salem has been wonderful from the beginning because they haven’t raised the cost. [They] wanted it to stay as something a family can do without forking out a lot of money,” Shellie said. “It’s more about giving back.”

Team participants should arrive at Salem Pond at 4 p.m. August 8 to begin boat construction. Each team may bring two assistants to help build. The race starts at 6 p.m., so show up a little early to reserve a spot to watch.

The Fab Folk reimagines The Beatles with folk flair MCKHELYN JONES

Local band, The Fab Folk, will be gracing the stage during Salem Days on August 11 at the Veterans Ballpark.

The Fab Folk is a Beatles cover band and is comprised of local musicians Jake Haws and Matt Weidauer. Their music is a blend of indie folk and draws inspiration from bands like Iron & Wine. They have worked together on various music projects since 2009, but the Fab Folk didn’t blossom until 2015.

“We had been playing in each other’s bands before The Fab Folk came to be,” Weidauer said. The duo began with six songs so that they could perform. Now, they have a whole collection of Beatles cover songs including the entire “Revolver” album.

The pair has played hundreds of shows in venues like bars to corporate events. They enjoy playing these gigs because the audience comes to them, Weidauer and Haws said.

with a built-in audience because it’s about having fun rather than trying to be famous. Their next move is to begin searching for out of state shows and to take opportunities when they arrive, Haws said.

While the Fab Folk will always be a cover band, they haven’t lost their own personal flair.

“It doesn’t sound like covers would be creative, but we really take the time to put our own spin on the arrangements,” Haws said. “There are some that are close to the original, but we try to put our own fingerprint on it.”

Both Haws and Weidauer play most of the same instruments, but Haws is the only one who can play the melodica. Also known as the pianica, blow-organ or melody horn, the melodica is a keyboard that also has a mouthpiece that is blown into and produces a sound like an accordion.

The Fab Folk will be playing at Veterans Ballpark from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 11. It is a free concert, so come early to reserve a spot.

Fair to kick off with ‘Country Triple’ concert ALEX SOUSA

Country-western star Gary Allan will headline the opening-night concert at the Utah County Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

The concert is being billed as a “Country Triple” performance with Allan being joined by artists Lauren Alaina and RaeLynn.

“We wanted to grow the fair and we thought that having a big concert like this in the middle of the summer would a great benefit to the community,” said Mike Stansfield, director of the Utah County Fair. “It’s a great way to kick off the fair and give everyone a big welcome.”

Allan has been touring the country as he continues work on his forthcoming 10th studio album, beginning the year with a string of sold-out shows in Nevada, Texas and Minnesota.

With over 7 million albums sold, Allan’s most recent record, “Set You Free,” debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Country Album Chart and the Billboard 200 Pop Chart, which was benefited by the critically acclaimed hit song “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain).”

The album sold 100,000 units in its first week and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

“We wanted to bring in a good country-western group, so we’d thought we’d really give it a shot” said Stansfield. “A lot of it came down to timing, really, but I feel like we lucked out more than anything.”

Stansfield and his team are preparing for a big turnout to the show after the success of last year’s Lonestar concert. They’ve expanded the seating options, setting chairs up in the bowl of the grand arena in front of the stage. Much of the draw this year also comes from the opening acts that will precede Allan’s performance,

who have recently seen huge successes in their careers.

RaeLynn, who is currently touring in support of her freshman album, “WildHorse,” was a contestant on the second season of NBC’s “The Voice.” Though she was eliminated from the competition during the quarterfinals, she’s found success in the country music scene, signing a record deal with Warner bros. Nashville and debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.

Alaina, who is no stranger to televised singing competitions, will also be taking the stage prior to Allan.

The runner-up from the 10th season of “American Idol,” Alaina has been celebrating the success of her sophomore release, “Road Less Traveled,” the first single of which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart.

“With this concert, we really wanted to give something to Utah County residents that we think they’ll enjoy,” said Utah County Commissioner Greg Graves.

“We thought it was a great way to celebrate the culture here and what our culture likes.”

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the concert set to begin at 7 p.m. It will be held in the Grand Arena at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. A fireworks show is planned following the entertainment.

The roar of engines and crowds will be heard throughout Spanish Fork as the Utah County Fair celebrates with three nights of high-octane entertainment. From Aug. 17-19, the Grand Arena will play host to a rodeo, monster truck rally, and the Utah-crowd favorite demolition derby, respectively.

“This fair has just gotten bigger and better,” said Mike Stansfield, director of the Utah County Fair. “And as the fair has grown, so have the events.”

This year, the demolition derby will be celebrating 10 years with Utah County, having started when the fair was moved to the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. In that time, the derby has become exponentially larger, becoming the biggest event hosted at the fair.

“Tickets sell out fast,” said Stansfield. “And most of those tickets go to families — big families. Last year we had one group, all related, that bought

As the derby has grown, so has the attention, attracting out-of-state talent competing for the cash prize. To sustain the growth, the price of the demolition derby tickets has crept up, which caused Stansfield and his team to look for other forms of entertainment to accommodate as many Utah

County residents as possible.

The Thursday-night rodeo will be free to the public, and promises fun for the whole family with bronco and bull riding, barrel racing, bareback riding and — one especially for the kids — mutton bustin’.

Friday night will see the return of the monster truck rally, now in its

third year as a major fair event.

“The monster truck rally is the hidden gem of the fair,” said Utah County Commissioner Greg Graves. “It’s such a family-friendly, fun event that it’s grow in popularity every year — and based on reactions from all the residents that attend, it’s the one thing that people don’t know about.”

Graves said that because demolition derbies are so popular in Utah, there are a lot throughout the state. The monster truck rally, however, isn’t something that’s seen as often, so he considers it an exciting way to mix things up for Utah County residents and fair attendees.

The committee behind the Utah County Fair has tried keeping the prices for the rally as low as possible, as well, which has helped get people into the arena for the show. The rally includes more than just the trucks, showcasing freestyle motocross, mini-car races, and other adrenaline-fueled showstoppers.

Golden Onion Days, Payson’s annual city celebration, will see its 87th year this summer. The yearly tradition began in 1929 by then mayor L.D. Stewart and was originally named “Onion Harvest and Homecoming.”

According to a proclamation that was printed in the Payson Chronicle in 1929, the celebration was planned because “many former residents of Payson City feel and have expressed a desire to come back to Payson and bring their friends with them for the purpose of meeting old friends and forming new friendships.”

Because the area was considered an agricultural district, according to the proclamation, and “outstanding in the production of the onion,” the celebration was centered on the onion harvest.

The proclamation, written by Stewart, went on to read, “I do further urge that all businesses, homes and schools be closed Friday the 13th, and that all unite in making the parade an outstanding success.”

The first celebration was held on Sept. 12, 13 and 14, 1929.

The celebration was later named “Payson City Golden Onion Days” and is still referred to this today. This year’s celebration, which will be held Aug. 31 – Sept. 4, incorporates the onion just as it did decades ago.

“Since our event is called Golden Onion Days, I try to incorporate the onion,” said Janeen Dean, community and cultural events coordinator. This year, there will be a “Biggest Onion Contest.” Entries for the biggest onion will be accepted on Sept. 3 from 7 to 11 a.m. Then, on the last day of the celebration, Sept. 4, the biggest

onion awards will take place at 1:30 p.m.

Locations are yet to be determined.

Another onion activity will be held on Sept. 2 with the Golden Onion Cook-off and Dutch Oven Cook-off. The cooking contests will happen at noon.

In addition to these activities that involve the onion, there are a large variety of other goings-on as well. The celebration kicks off on Aug. 31 with a Honky Tonk Tailgate Party in Concert presented by Mountain View Hospital and Peteetneet Amphitheater.

Throughout Golden Onion Days, Payson Community Theater will be presenting “The Addams Family.” There will be a City of Fun Carnival and a boutique and food in the park on Sept. 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The days of celebration will end on Sept. 4 with a Grand Parade at 10 a.m., Hitman monster truck rides from 10 a.m. to dusk and a Family Onion Fun Children’s Carnival from 1 to 3 p.m. The grand marshal for the Grand Parade will be announced to the community at a later date.

Festival provides scholarships to students LAURA GILES

For the second year, basketball will be a part of Payson’s Golden Onion Days and will not only be fun, but will also raise money for scholarships for high school students. The 3-on-3-basketball tournament and three-point shootout will be held on Aug. 25, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2, depending on the division.

“Last year, we were invited from the city to help get kids more involved in Golden Onion Days,” said Dr. Brian Rowley of Apple Valley Vision. The basketball tournament is a great way to get the youth involved and it helps fund the Power of Vision scholarship program, he said.

The program, in its third year, is for students who have vision for and demonstrate ability to do great things in their lives. The scholarship is given to a male and female student at Payson High School and this year at Salem Hills High School as well.

Students are nominated by their teachers and then chosen by the staff at Apple Valley Vision. These are students who

are not the typical multiple-scholarship recipients, but are working hard for their futures. For example, one of the recipients last year was a student who greatly increased his grade point average during his high school career. The winning students demonstrate vision to bring their dreams to life.

“In order for a student to be nominated for this scholarship, we invite the faculty or staff at the respective high schools, to submit an essay, explaining why they believe the student should deserve the award,” said Rowley. “Our goal was to have the teachers or staff identify students whose strengths and passions could range from the arts or technology, science to sports and everything else in between.”

During the past two years, each of the Power of Vision scholarship recipients was given $500. Rowley would like to increase that amount and even be able to help more students. The 3-on-3-basketball tournament will help with that endeavor.

The divisions for the 3-on-3 tournament are adults, boys and girls grades fifth through eighth and grades ninth through 12th. Teams will be placed into pools of four teams and each team is guaranteed at least three games. All participants will receive a t-shirt, water bottle and other

prizes in a drawstring bag.

Last year, 30 teams competed. Rowley hopes that even more will participate this year. The tournament will be held at Payson Junior High School, 1025 S. Hwy. 198.
