DEAR READERS This last year was a year for the books. For many Utah County residents it included new beginnings, fresh starts and continued growth. For others, we have witnessed struggle, pain and heartbreak. As journalists we strive to depict those moments with our words and images for everyone else in our community so you may experience even an inkling of others’ joys and sorrows, in the hope that we can all better know and connect with one another. Knowing one another, and maintaining that sense of small community, is a challenge these days as Utah County faces so much growth each year; 2017 was no exception. With more than 600,000 residents, the Daily Herald can hardly encapsulate all of the most crucial or fantastic moments of the year in just 68 pages. However, we hope that as you join us on a reflection of 2017 via the images taken by our talented photojournalists, you’ll find some of the most cherished victories that took place, like Lehi’s football state championship or the American Fork girls’ soccer victory. You’ll find some of the tragedies that brought neighbors together, as we mourned the loss of some students, teachers and community members to untimely accidents. You’ll find other moments frozen in time that encapsulate Utah County’s top issues, like the 3rd Congressional District special election with its domino effect as well as how local entities address the increase of the homeless. Elder Robert D. Hales eulogized Family members follow in the casket containing Elder Robert D. Hales during his funeral services on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017. Known as a valiant missionary and servant of the Lord, Elder Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away in a hospital surrounded by his wife and family as well as President Russell M. Nelson, according to church officials. He was 85. Hales was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on April 2, 1994. By Sammy Jo Hester

Remains of Peggy Sue Case found in Spanish Fork Police work to uncover human remains that were found Monday, May 22, 2017 in the backyard of the home at 80 N. 800 East Spanish Fork. The remains were later identified as 1988 missing person Peggy Sue Case, who was reported to have previously resided in the home. Michael Kufrin, the man subsequently arrested on suspicion of killing Case nearly 30 years ago, was extradited back to Utah from Illinois. By Sammy Jo Hester

Jason Chaffetz, R-Alpine, held double-sided signs reading “Agree” and “Disagree.”The “Disagree” side was pointed his direction far more often. The crowd of dissatisfied people met Chaffetz with a loud chorus of boos when he first walked into the auditorium — and the mood toward Chaffetz did not improve throughout the night as they asked him questions on topics ranging from Planned Parenthood to immigration.

Homelessness in the county Shawn, a homeless veteran, takes down his tent after spending months building it on private property near Slate Canyon on May, 14, 2017. According to community leaders and police representatives, the county has become flooded with the need to provide services to new homeless persons and many community organizations designed to provide said services have become inundated. According to many leaders, they have come to Utah County from Salt Lake County after Salt Lake City officials have conducted several waves of what they call “Operation Diversion.” Operation Diversion was a project organized by Salt Lake City community partners, including the Salt Lake Police Department, to essentially weed out homeless individuals who are dangerous to those around them from those who genuinely need services such as food and shelter. Sgt. Wayne Keith with the Utah County Sheriff ’s Department estimated that there were twice as many homeless camps up Utah County’s canyons in 2017 as there were in 2016. By Sammy Jo Hester

Heir to breathe In 2012, Steve bailey was diagnosed with Aplha-1 antitrypsin defiency, which is a genetic desease that essentially destroys his lungs by the air he breathes. His diagnosis was dire and there was no course of treatment for Bailey. Over the course of four years, Bailey’s lung capacity continue to decrease from 55 percent to 25 percent. this decrease wsa a ign of his coming death. However, in a matter of three days in late July, Bailey’s lung capacity went from 25 to 100 percent capacity. This increase came after Bailey received a double lung transplant on July 23, 2017. “He’s had his ups and down to get out of there,” Merity Bailey, Steve’s wife, said. “He’s still thinking each time he breathes, where his lungs came from.
