S

teve Kaufusi, defensive line coach for the Brigham Young University football team, says his family is very normal.

Those who know them may tend to disagree.

When it comes to life and helping their children plan for LDS missions, sports careers and beyond, Steve and Michelle Kaufusi are extraordinary in their normalness.

Michelle runs a tight ship at home and her follow through with her children is consistent and

solid. They know their place on the Kaufusi team.

At home, Michelle’s lineup of helpers is a veritable ABC and Ds of hard workers — that’s Alexis, Bronson, Corbin, and the twins Daryl and Devin — the five Kaufusi children. Bronson’s wife Hilary Smith Kaufusi has been added to the family lineup.

The work ethic, though at times a struggle, has paid off in many areas of their life, according to Bronson and Corbin. They both admit they have been dubbed by former fellow missionaries the “bathroom cleaners” and “dish washers” of their missions.

not only earned full-ride athletic scholarships, but academic scholarships as well. Oldest child Alexis, 26, is currently getting her MBA degree while coaching women’s basketball at Timpview High School in Provo.

Her brothers and sister have or are currently serving fulltime missions.

Called to serve family and God Bronson, 25, served a mission in New Zealand, and played both football and basketball at BYU — something that has only been done three times before at the university prior to Bronson and his brother Corbin.

Tyrone Brown and John Moala played basketball and football, and you have to go back to the 1973-74 seasons when Gifford Nielsen first played on both teams. Elder Nielsen currently serves as a member of the LDS Church’s Quorum of the Seventy.

Bronson was drafted this spring by the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League.

He said his mission and his parents have taught him a lot.

“At a young age and as a football player I learned you reap what you sow,” Bronson said. “I took a lot of things from my mission. You set goals, planning, time management, planning is really big. You learn how to handle it.”

Bronson said he also learned you can be a good member of the church, go on a mission, go to college — and play in the NFL.

Corbin, 23, served a mission in South Korea, and for the past two years has been playing on the BYU men’s basketball team and will join them again in January for the 2016-17 season. He is currently on the BYU football team, following his brother’s lead and playing two collegiate sports.Daryl, 20, is serving a mission in South Korea. Before her mission she played women’s soccer at BYU-Hawaii and anticipates playing when she returns.

Devin, 20, is serving a mission in Switzerland, and plans on playing football, like his brothers, when he returns.

When Michelle isn’t serving on the Provo City School District Board of Education or any number of civic committees, she says she is an athome mom.

While Steve works hard with the BYU football team, and serves in various church callings — including recently as a bishop in a young adult ward — Michelle has kept the kids on task with everything from chores to piano lessons, and continues to keep the home a place where they and their friends want to come.

In order to do that, it takes discipline, organization and a family that knows how to work together and play together.

“My parents are really good examples of hard workers. They were often tired, but we still had fun,” Bronson said. “From a young age I recognized their work ethic. It 4 LDS GUIDE September 25, 2016

was always a family effort.

“We’d get up on Saturday mornings and go to the board to see what our chores were. Before you could go out you had to have your chores done.”

Bronson said he learned the hard way how important those chores were.

It was his senior year, and Timpview High had just won the state football championship. A big party was planned in Provo following the game. But Bronson had not cleaned the bathroom.

His mom got him home and on his knees scrubbing.

“We raced to get it done,” Bronson remembers, with a laugh.

Michelle said Bronson didn’t complain too much, but did recognize that he was probably the only state champion football player who was cleaning a toilet rather than partying with friends.

“My mom has some great oneline reminders like, ‘You know the rules,’ ‘Do it right the first time,’ and ‘Those things happen,’” Bronson said.

He said she doesn’t hesitate to use them as a vocal reminder of commitment to duty.

When the kids asked Steve for an allowance, like the one their friends got, he told them, “We don’t have allowance, you work.”

Corbin knows about getting chores done and the wrath of his mom if he didn’t. The night before he entered the Missionary Training Center he was out in the front yard with car lights shining on the bushes he was supposed to have trimmed and pulled, trying to get it done.

On the night before her farewell talk in church, Daryl was using her cellphone flashlight to weed the front garden.

And about those cellphones, Steve and Michelle have the charging bar in their bedroom. The rule is: have the phones on the power strip by 10 p.m. or lose the use of it the next day.

Michelle says this helps her and her husband know the kids are home by curfew, they are off the technology and they have obeyed.

“We were raised good,” Alexis said with a smirk. “Hey, we’re not in jail!”

Lest you think the Kaufusi kids aren’t cared for and loved, think again. Just the food shopping is enough to bring a normal person to his or her knees, but not Michelle.She must feed some of these kids a training table of 6,000 to 7,000 calories a day. It takes planning and endurance.

For 15 years Michelle has spent, on average, about $2,000 a month on food to keep her kids supplied with energy and proper nutrition.

Think carts of food — one just loaded with meat, others with whole grain breads, milk, eggs, then vegetables and fruit. At home three refrigerators are waiting.

One refrigerator is in the kitchen and two in the garage, where mom’s car is purposely parked right up to the doors so they can’t be opened.

“We go through two loaves of bread and a gallon of milk a day,” Michelle said. “My food bill has never dropped.”

Mission prep When it came to mission preparation Michelle was on task. First of all, the kids got refresher courses in piano and learned how to play many of the songs in the LDS hymnbook.

She had a chorister come to the house and had the boys learn how to conduct music.

The follow up to that was directing music in a Sacrament meeting.

Family Home Evenings were set aside to learn how to shake hands, look people in the eyes and start conversations.

Those skills were mostly learned by all the kids working at the Days Market in their neighborhood.

Michelle and Steve believed, that as baggers, the kids would have to talk with customers and learn customer service, and stay humble.

Serving missions has kept the Kaufusi kids grounded and focused, and their eyes singled — and not on sports.

“There comes a point on your mission that you don’t care about anything else but a mission,” Corbin said. “To keep in shape my goal was to run everywhere. Every day I was drenched in sweat.

“There wasn’t much of an adjustment going on my mission. It was easy to work hard.”

accommodating companions. Coming home for him was a much harder adjustment than leaving.

“Corbin was a different guy coming off his mission,” Steve said.

But that was a good thing because both Steve and Corbin said he lost himself in serving the Lord, and put aside sports for two years. During that time he also grew 2.5 inches.

When it comes to success in life the Kaufusi chuldren aren’t perfect, but they aren’t unlike a modernday trio of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the Old Testament.

They ate properly, worked hard and served the Lord.

It’s obvious the Kaufusis are public figures of sorts. People recognize them, but when it came to their missions Steve told his kids to not get caught up in the fame.

“I told the kids to be a regular person, focus on the Lord’s work, and kids will look up to you,” he said.

The rush in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to hasten missionary work four years ago has slowed a little, but the need for a Missionary Training Center expansion has not decreased.

The first expansion on the church-operated Provo MTC is expected to be completed in 2017.

A second phase is anticipated to replace some of the internal living quarters in the future. No date has been set for the second phase.

The number of full-time missionaries serving missions for the LDS Church is approximately 74,000, according to church information.

Following a change in the missionary age requirement in 2012, the total went from around 50,000 to 84,000 nearly overnight. The number peaked and then tapered as anticipated. Currently there is a steady upward trend, but there are some seasonal fluctuations.

That increase over the past five years means there is still a need for additional classrooms and other rooms and upgrades at the Provo MTC. The church is also adding state-of-the-art technology.

but notice the towering buildings that are being added to the MTC complex.

The two large buildings under construction on the corner of University Parkway and 900 East are an answer to part of the church’s missionary growth needs. Those buildings are changing the look of the Pleasant View and Oakhills neighborhoods and the northern edge of Brigham Young University’s campus.

During the years of planning for the MTC, the LDS Church announced the younger age restriction for missionaries. The announcement brought the MTC planning and building to a screeching halt while leaders figured out where they were going to house the massive increase in missionaries.

The answer was to lease the nearby Raintree Commons apartments in Provo, which were then affectionately called the MTC West.

The Raintree apartments were used for nearly two years to help with the increased numbers. At the same time, the living quarters at the MTC were reconfigured to house more missionaries.

In November 2014, residents in the Pleasant View neighborhood got a sneak peek at the new renderings showing the Phase I construction for the MTC; the church had been looking for space to expand

since 2012.

“Everybody is pretty happy with it,” said Mark Cannon, Pleasant View neighborhood vice chairman at the time. “I haven’t heard any negative. I feel what the MTC has done in terms of planning has been very good.”

The project consists of two sixstory buildings with classrooms and study halls, underground parking for approximately 340 cars and a large landscaped courtyard. All fulltime employees, part-time student employees and volunteers will have access to and from the underground parking via the main entrance at 900 East and Temple View Drive.

The Phase I expansion is being built around a quad on the southwest corner of 900 East and University Parkway where the Brigham Young University laundry building and auxiliary maintenance buildings formerly sat.

“The new construction at the Provo Missionary Training Center continues to progress on schedule,” church spokesman Erick Hawkins said in January.

According to renderings and a 3-D diorama, the perimeter of the entire MTC campus will be softened by increasing landscaping and replacing chain-link fences with more decorative fences that will be set back further from the property lines. Trash bins adjacent to residences along the west side will be relocated away from the homes.

The new construction does not include living quarters.

Though the Provo MTC is the most common and well-known training site for missionaries, there are 14 other worldwide training centers that are helping to alleviate

the number of missionaries who used to come to Provo.

The LDS Church currently operates mission training centers in 15 locations:

Within the walls of a MTC After being extended a mission call and it being accepted, a missionary’s first encounter is at one of the 15 missionary training centers throughout the world. Depending on his or her call, a missionary can spend as little as two weeks or as long as nine weeks at the MTC in training and, in some cases, learning a foreign language.

Foreign language training helps missionaries prepare to serve in one of more than 400 missions worldwide.

While missionaries receive early religious training at home and in church auxiliaries, according to a church statement, “It should be noted that MTCs provide a decidedly more rigorous curriculum rooted in gospel fundamentals.

“The meat and drink of MTC life is daily practice teaching situations, intense gospel classroom instruction from teachers who are former missionaries, weekly devotional addresses from Church leaders and MTC staff, and weekly service opportunities.”

The Provo MTC teaches more than 50 languages. Each instructor who teaches a language is either a native speaker or is fluent, thanks to his or her own missionary service.

In addition to language instruction, teachers provide cultural training to help missionaries make a smoother transition into their assigned foreign country.

Missionaries also have physical education, and preparation days to write letters, do laundry and study — sometimes they even sleep.

K

arson Payton had no intention of serving an LDS mission. He was in San Luis Obispo, California, to pursue his soccer career.

Even though Payton had grown up as a member of the church, he wasn’t particularly active and

his dream of playing professional soccer was his focus, not the Book of Mormon.

But two things happened that were out of the ordinary and changed his mindset.

Robison delighted to fit two descriptions BYU senior journeys from facing Penn State in a national championship game to serving God in Pennsylvania Darnell Dickson DAILY HERALD

She had always thought of herself as, “Hannah Robison, volleyball player.”

But through a series of events during her career at Brigham Young University, that changed.

Maybe, she thought, God has other plans for me.

As a junior, Robison was part of a 2014 BYU women’s volleyball team that went to the national championship match for the first time. The Cougars fell to Penn State in the final, but the runner-up finish was the best in school history.

Robison had struggled with her decision about when to serve an LDS mission. When church leaders changed the mission age for women from 21 to 19, the call to serve felt even stronger.

Robison had suffered through a series of injuries in her career, setbacks that led her to believe that maybe she wasn’t supposed to be just “Hannah Robison, volleyball player” but maybe “Hannah Robison, missionary.”

“I knelt and prayed to Heavenly Father,” Robison said. “I had an injury at the time that went away and came back. I thought that maybe he had a different plan for me, but that’s not what I wanted, you know, the pride in all of us. So when I prayed, I said ‘I know you’ll guide me where I need to go.’”

She left volleyball after her junior year in 2014 and was called to serve in the Pennsylvania Philadelphia mission.

Robison returned from her mission this summer and has been a key component to BYU’s fast start during the 2016 season.

“Hannah brings senior leadership,” BYU coach Heather Olmstead said. “She was on that team that made the run to the championship match, so to get another senior back brings stability and calmness on 14 LDS GUIDE September 25, 2016

Olmstead said Robison’s return was unexpected, but a nice surprise.

Robison is the Cougars’ “bonus senior.”

After six months in the mission field, Robison was transferred to the visitors’ center of the new Priesthood Restoration Site near Susquehanna Depot. LDS prophet Joseph Smith and his wife, Emma, lived in the area from 1827 to 1830. Events associated with the translation of the Book of Mormon, the restoration of the priesthood and many early revelations were received in this area.

“I never really wanted to be a visitors’ center sister,” Robison admitted, “so of course I was called there after thinking that. As a missionary, you’re supposed to find people to teach, but most of those who came to the visitors’ center were already members of the church.”

Robison was part of the original group of sisters in the visitors’ center.

“We had no idea what we were doing, but we figured it out,” she

said. Robison earned the nickname “Mama Goose” because she was older than most of them.

She said she grew to love the experience in the visitors’ center.

“It was amazing to be in the area where much of the Book of Mormon revelations on priesthood took place,” Robison said. “I learned about the importance of the priesthood and it gave me a deeper understanding to help others recognize why the power of God is so important.

“People who came there could see how Joseph Smith lived, and we gained a deeper impression of how a man can be an instrument of God.” For the final four months of her mission, Robison served in Philadelphia and was able to assist in the open house of the new temple there.

“I got to serve in the country, at the visitors’ center and in a temple open house, so I was really blessed,” she said.

A few months before she was to return home, Robison started to think about her future. She knew she wanted to finish her education at BYU, but playing volleyball was something she loved. There was a new coach at BYU, someone she was familiar with — Olmstead was

an assistant on the 2014 team.

“I thought, ‘What the heck, I might as well ask the coaches,’” Robison said. “There was a chance they were going to say ‘No’ but it never hurts to ask.”

Robison emailed Olmstead about the possibility of returning to play for the Cougars. In other BYU sports — football and men’s basketball, for instance — returned missionaries are common and coaches plan for their exits and return from missions. But a returned missionary in the women’s volleyball program is a rare thing.

Olmstead agreed to let Robison come back and work out with the team. Robison — who said she played volleyball just twice on her mission — returned home to her family in Orem on Aug. 10. Four days later, she was on the court practicing with the Cougars. Less than two weeks later, Robison was starting against Utah Valley University in the season opener.

“The first practice was hard,” Robison admitted. “Cozy (Burnett) asked me how I was feeling and I said, ‘Overwhelmed.’ That’s the best word to describe it.

“The team was very welcoming. I felt like I wasn’t as rusty as I thought I would be but I wasn’t moving as sharply as I would like.

My teammates helped build my confidence.”

Robison is still working her way back into shape. She may not be jumping as high or moving as fast as she wants, but there is one thing she does really, really well: pass the ball.

As an outside hitter, Robison yearns for the big kill or block. But her role now is to pass the ball from the back row to the setter, sophomore Lyndie Haddock, to start the offense for freshman sensation McKenna Miller or middle blocker Amy Boswell.

“Passing is probably my favorite thing,” Robison said. “I don’t know why. I just really enjoy it.”

Robison has two more semesters of school left to earn a degree in communications disorders. She’s looking at graduate school.

“I’m very excited about this season,” Robison said. “There is a lot of energy and competition. I definitely feel blessed and very grateful.”

Many LDS missionaries have tales of close calls, whether it be with dogs, bikes or people.

Kieffer Longson — a freshman from San Ramon, California, who is now an offensive lineman on the Brigham Young University football team — has his own stories from his time sharing his faith in Toronto.

He got hit by vehicles — twice.

“My mission was great,” Longson said. “I got to serve for a year before some stuff happened, where I was hit by some cars. I also separated a few knife fights, so a lot of stuff happened.

“But I felt like I really grew and learned so much that I would do it again in a heartbeat. Everything just kind of worked out.”

The choice to step away from football to serve a mission for two years wasn’t a simple one for Longson, who had scholarship offers from big-name college football programs like Ohio State, Florida State, UCLA and Missouri.

“It was a tough decision because I felt like I could go in right away and start in college,” Longson said. “But obviously there is more important stuff than football. That was my determining factor, that you have to put God first.”

That was his goal when he set out — but what ended up happening was much less expected.

When anyone hears he was hit by a car on two separate occasions while on his mission, he has to tell the stories.

“There is a rule in the mission where you have to get out of the car and help your companion back out,” Longson said. “I got out of the car to back him up, but as soon as I opened the door he started going in reverse pretty fast. I tried to jump out really fast but there was a wall right next to where I opened up the door.

“The door of the car pinned me to the wall. I ended up trying to close the door and tilted it right into me.”

The car door proved to be no match for Longson’s big frame, which is listed at 6-foot-7, 295

pounds on the Cougars football roster.

“I broke the door,” Longson said.

“It just came off.”

The vehicle was sent in for repairs, which meant the two LDS missionaries relied on bicycles for their transportation in the Niagara Falls area — which set the stage for the second collision.

“I was biking and there was a crosswalk,” Longson said. “It was a green light, so I kept biking my normal speed, but this car didn’t see it and just nailed me.”

He said that with his football background he doesn’t get too worried about pain, so he just kept going. It wasn’t until later that he found out the impact had significantly injured him.

“I was just laughing with my companion because it was my second time,” Longson said. “But it turned out it messed up my knee pretty badly, so I had to come home. It partially tore two things, but I’m fully recovered now.”

The freshman expressed his gratitude to BYU for bringing him to Provo, where he could get topquality treatment from the football training staff.

“BYU offered me a great opportunity to come right away and start rehabilitation here,” Longson said.

Since he returned in mid-June, Longson said the topic of his car accidents has come up frequently.

But while the collisions might be the most well-known stories from his mission, the freshman said he had a host of other experiences that he values.

“Converting people was the best part of my mission, helping them change their lives and seeing that God is really in their life,” Longson said. “There was this guy from Turkey who had to flee the country because he wanted to become a Christian. He fled to Canada searching for the true church.

“One day he came across missionaries and we were able to teach him.”

Longson has had to deal with the challenge of having to return home for health reasons, but he doesn’t dwell on it.

“Let’s say that car ended my football career,” Longson said.

“I would still say my mission was worth it. It was priceless to me and meant a lot more than football.”
