SCENE

Not even COVID-19 can fully shut down the party scene on the East End. A few weeks back, National Geographic and The Cinema Society hosted the premiere of “Rebuilding Paradise,” directed by Ron Howard. Howard The format? A drive-in at advocate and TV journalist Jill Rappaport’s Rappaport horse farm, the Last Buck Ranch in Water Mill. Mary Giuliani handled the food and drinks, which were served car-side by fully masked waiters toting trays of pigs in a blanket, sea salt popcorn, and s’mores in a jar. Don Lemon, Lemon Jane Krakowski, Krakowski Tabitha Simmons, Simmons Joey Wölffer, Wölffer Eric Ripert, Ripert and Cynthia Rowley were among the guests.

EAST END IN BLOOM!

TWO NEW SHOPS TO DISCUSS!

ONE: GIORGIO ARMANI The fabulously wallpapered boutique in East Hampton is bestowed with a jungle theme, and a centerpiece of the shopping experience

For a certain segment of New Yorkers, one of the most taxing restrictions of quarantine has involved the closure of their beloved fitness studios. Well, no longer—in the Hamptons, at any rate. SoulCycle is now offering “Soul Outdoor” classes, held underneath tents near its Bridgehampton and Water Mill studios. Headphones will be provided, along with water and shoes, and the cost is $50. On the pricier end of the spectrum, Tracy Anderson is offering $90 drop-in classes at an outdoor space at her Water Mill studio; to guarantee your space through Labor Day will set you back $4,860. We report, you decide!

Back in 2015, fashion industry superstar Whitney Bromberg Hawkings founded Flowerbx, an online floral delivery service that took the U.K. stylish set by storm. Now, freshly cut flowers, sourced directly from the growers, are delivered to the East End in a day or two. Beautiful bunches of single-varietal buds will arrive in eco-friendly brown paper, festooned with a bow (starting at $70). Plants, home accessories, room sprays, candles, and floral scissors are also available. Ideal for a gift, but also an easy, cost-effective way to ensure that your home is always bursting with blooms—without having to leave the house. flowerbx.com

TWO: ALTUZARRA

Designer Joseph Altuzarra has been spending lockdown at his home in Water Mill, along with his husband and the couple’s 7-month-old daughter, so he’s especially pleased to be opening a boutique on the East End. In addition to a dazzling selection of the brand’s celebrated Espadrille totes (at left in Tuscan Sun), the shop will carry a curated selection of the Spring and Pre-Fall ’20 collections, as well as FA S H I O N W E E K D A I L Y. WITH MODEL DU MOMENT KATE BOCK

Where were you when you heard you were going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s iconic Swimsuit Issue? I was at home in the Hamptons with my boyfriend [Kevin Love] and puppy. I was completely surprised and had no idea what I was in for that morning! I was shaking and in total shock and disbelief! I think I jumped on Kevin’s lap! What kind of suit are you wearing on the cover? Black and white bikinis! I love them both so much—I think I might even frame a cover suit! What does this cover mean to you? I’ve been working with this brand for eight years and have dreamed of this for so long; it’s such an incredible accomplishment and moment in my career! I’m so excited and thrilled. Speechless. Who are some of your favorite SI models of all time? Heidi Klum, Kathy Ireland, Elle Macpherson. There are so many who have graced these pages over 58 years! You’ve been living in the Hamptons recently. What are you loving about the area? I was in Cleveland with Kevin for the first three months, and we moved to the Hamptons a month ago. We have been loving the beaches, sunset walks, and discovering new areas every day. Where are your favorite spots in town? Amber Waves Farm, Hampton Chutney Co., Tenet, Grindstone Coffee & Donuts, and Loaves & Fishes. Are you a pool person or a beach person? Beach, all day!

CHIC CHAT!

You love the Hamptons, you really love it! According to The East Hampton Star, school enrollment at Amagansett School will be doubling this fall, to 150 students. This suggests that a lot of vous are planning to become year-rounders, if only temporarily. See you at Carissa’s! • Who knew that there are flying trapeze classes happening in Bridgehampton? Classes are taking place for kids ages 6 and up, and adults who weigh up to 250 pounds, at the Hayground School. Prices start at $150 per person, and there will be no more than five fliers per session. More information at trapeze-experience.com/classes.

DRINK UP!

WITH JANET SILVERSTEIN, CO-FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF BIMBLE BEVERAGES

How did you end up in the CBD beverage business? I became intrigued by CBD’s anecdotal benefits, and the light bulb went off when my husband, who is my co-founder, and I realized that no great-tasting CBD drinks existed. We wanted to create a product that would marry the beekeeping aspect of our lives using honey—we are New

create a premium drink that people could feel comfortable drinking and actually remain sober in a social situation, and voilà! Bimble was born. CBD products are on the rise. Why did you choose to go that route? As New Yorkers, we realize that everybody is so stressed out and needs an alternative to alcohol in order to destress in a healthy way. CBD is a newly awakened natural health product with many benefits yet to be discovered and studied scientifically. Anecdotally, people report that it helps relieve anxiety, and there are components of the hemp plant that work well together with CBD, creating an entourage effect of calm and chill. We wanted to combine that with other natural ingredients to create a highquality CBD beverage. We like to think of it as therapy in a bottle. What are your plans for the summer? We have a home in the Hudson Valley in Putnam County, where I spend most of my summer. However, we enjoy going out to the Hamptons and Fire Island to visit friends. What are you looking forward to doing? I enjoy being outdoors and exercising, swimming, and working in my garden. I grow all my own summer vegetables—I’m a total tomato geek and grow more than 30 varieties!

At 75 Main in Southampton, owner Zach Erdem chopped up and burned Table 1, a VIP six-top that was once frequented by Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein “I’m sick of the bad energy of this table,” he told Page Six. “Every time I see it I think of that sicko.” • Yoga sans mask? The East End was abuzz by a video of Cristina Cuomo practicing yoga next to a friend inside the Jimmy Choo boutique in East Hampton.

COCKTAIL HOUR WITH TWO CHICKS’ LINDA CASH

You launched three new cocktails this spring… Yes! We updated the classic Old Fashioned and created a sparkling cocktail called the New Fashioned, which has spiced whiskey, ginger, and an orange twist. Knowing that everyone loves a refreshing vodka cocktail, we created a Sparkling Vodka CuTea that has vodka, peach, cucumber tea, and thyme. Creating a new generation of gimlet, we made an amazing gin, apple, and cucumber cocktail called a Sparkling Apple Gimlet. How long does it take from conception to product roll out? Approximately nine months—I guess you can call them my children! Sparkling alcoholic beverages seem to be having a major moment. Why do you think that is? It’s the convenience of a great-tasting cocktail that you can enjoy by the pull of a tab. Readyto-drink cocktails take the guesswork out of making a great balanced cocktail, while eliminating the mess and worries about having the right ingredients. Our canned

sparkling cocktails are all at 5 percent alcohol and made with real premium spirits. Just open the can, and enjoy a premium cocktail! What separates Two Chicks from its competitors? Our deliciously designed cocktails are made with real, premium spirits. We’re a femaleowned, -founded, and -run company. The Two Chicks line includes a twist on the most popular classic cocktails that are difficult to make on your own. Love the packaging. Who does your artwork? We love that you love our packaging, however, we will not kiss-and-tell on the who. We did all work together knowing that you need to have a package that stands out from the rest. Hearts are especially important to us, and what better way to have them than right on the package. Are you going to the Hamptons this year? My husband and I live in Amagansett and spend our summers here every year!

What are your favorite haute spots? For dining, we love The Beacon, American Hotel, Bostwick’s, The Palm, East Hampton Grill, Union Burger Bar, and Social Club. For sweet treats, we go to Levain Bakery and Round Swamp Farm for pies. And we love the beach at Indian Wells!

“From the west village to Southampton, I’m a Sant Ambroeus devotee. My go-to order is an Aperol spritz and a carciofi salad. Insider tip: Ask for their homemade Dijon mustard. It’s incredible!”

Where are you based this summer? Water Mill and Southampton Favorite local store? Kelter-Malce Antiques Favorite local restaurant? I eat at Suki Zuki often. It’s super convenient with all the Hampton’s traffic, and the fish is fresh! Positive take-away from these turbulent times? This kind of resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement. I feel there will be big change in our industry and that people are enforcing having more diversity in the workplace. Must-have summer item? This Japanese sunscreen a makeup artist friend of mine, Kanako, gave me. It’s called Addiction, and I’ve been wearing it every day. 50 SPF, of course!

“If you’re missing your annual summer European vacation as much I am, head East to the new Duryea’s Orient Point—you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Mykonos.”

Where are you based this summer? Sag Harbor Favorite summertime cocktail? I don’t drink, but I love fresh grapefruit juice with a salted rim. Favorite local store? I’m not much of a shopper, but I’m at

Provisions daily or perusing antique shops locally and on the North Fork. Favorite local restaurant? Bette and Dale’s organic produce in Sag Harbor, and Duryea’s Lobster Deck in Montauk. Summer 2020 reading list? Call of the Reed Warbler, by Charles Massy; Bright Precious Thing, by Gail Caldwell Favorite artist? Too many favorites, but I’ll choose local artist April Gornik.

BERNSTEIN

FOUNDER, WEWOREWHAT Local coffee run? Jack’s! Song of the summer? “Rhythm Romance,” by Oli Benz Favorite date-night spot? Le Bilboquet or The Crow’s Nest. If I’m at Bilboquet, I typically get oysters, asparagus salad, and the Cajun chicken. From Crow’s Nest, I get the kale salad and whatever fresh fish is on the menu, but the lobster pasta is the best dish they have. Must-have summer item? A great designer beach bag. My current favorites are the new Loewe totes. What are you working on now? My recent Shop WeWoreWhat swim collection was inspired by vintage Hamptons, and I’m currently working on designing new collections for both Shop WeWoreWhat and Danielle Bernstein, as well as growing my tech platform Moe Assist. Have the Hamptons served as your shelter over the past few months? Yes, I have been here quarantining. I love being close to nature the most.

Must-have summer items? EiR Surf Mud, AERIN clutch, and a Cynthia Rowley wetsuit Positive take-away from these turbulent times? The illumination of a broken society is a result of humans living in patterns of trauma and pain, which creates an internal struggle with ego.… It’s uncomfortable to acknowledge, on so many levels; hopefully, we as individuals will do the work, heal ourselves, and then be of service in helping others.

STELLA She's one of the most beautiful women of alltime, but there are so many more reasons to admire STELLA MAXWELL Read on! By EDDIE ROCHE Photography by YU TSAI Styling by MELINA CHEN Makeup by MIA YANG Hair by JOHN RUGGIERO Manicure by CHRISTINA AVILES AUDE Production 88 PHASES

Where have you been the past few months, and how have you been coping? I’ve been home in California, and I suppose I’m coping like everyone else, taking it day by day. I’m being safe and considerate and trying to stay sane at the same time. Did you pick up any new hobbies during quarantine? I actually did! I learned to juggle, and I have been surfing a lot. How were you able to fulfill yourself creatively? I’ve been working on a secret project. It has been a lot of fun and allowed me to really channel my creativity. Are you a person who likes to FaceTime? Not really. I have been talking with my mom and dad daily and that has been really nice. How are you staying optimistic these days? I stay optimistic knowing that this will pass. Where are you eager to go when the world returns to some sense of normalcy? Probably to dinner with friends and maybe a movie. Nothing complicated. Just the little simple things. We noticed on your Instagram that you posted an image of yourself walking your dog with a mask on in mid-March. Very ahead of the world! I have worn masks for years. That was ahead of the world because I had been preaching to my friends about using masks for a long time now. One of my close friends was always talking about pandemics and germs. Literally for maybe 10 years. I had a lot information going into this. We also noticed that you have a phone number on your Instagram where people can text you. What’s this about? This is a number from a service called Community. Basically, it’s a number that fans can write me or I can message them about whatever I am thinking about or if there is something exciting to announce. It’s actually really amazing. You did a great story with Vogue recently and you mentioned that you prefer to use the acronym LGBTQIA. Can you tell our readers a little more about the IA and why it’s important for you to include those additional letters? I think it’s important to be inclusive, and I believe there are many ways to define oneself—intersexual, asexual. They are certainly important letters. And also allied. I read a few comments about my use of allied, but I believe this is extremely important. Your whole family, I should say hopefully your family is supportive and involved. What are some LGBTQIA causes that are important to you? I believe we need to get to a point where we don’t have to define or explain who we are. I hope that people become open-minded and aware enough to the point where people can exist and be respected for however we define our sexuality or gender or orientation. Do you consider yourself a role model now? I would not like to define myself as anything in particular. I am just expressing my feelings. What were your summers like as a kid? Summers were always a wonderful time. My parents would have holiday in August, and our family would always go somewhere lovely. Those are really some of my best memories. You’ve worked with so many incredible talents over the years. Is there anyone you’d still like to work with? I would love to work with Annie Leibovitz someday. I love her early documentary photos so much.

MAJOR MOD Maxwell is one of the busiest models in the world and has become a breakout star in the fashion world.

COVER PHOTOGRAPHER

YU TSAI

How did you meet Stella Maxwell? Stella and I met for the first time four years ago backstage at the Moschino show while I was conducting interviews for Harper’s Bazaar Singapore on the models walking the show.

“WITH TIME COMES EXPERIENCE. AND WITH EXPERIENCE COMES A CERTAIN COMFORT IN EXISTING. BY COMFORT I MEAN YOU BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS TRULY IMPORTANT IN LIFE—HEALTH, FAMILY, AND LOVE.” We know you turned 30 this year. What was that like for you? With time comes experience. And with experience comes a certain comfort in existing. By comfort I mean you begin to understand what is truly important in life—health, family, and love. A lot of your peers have swimsuit or clothing lines. Is that something you’d like to do? I have a project in the works. I will explain more when it’s time. I really look forward to sharing! What do you think New York Fashion Week will be like in September? Honestly, there are so many more things to worry about then Fashion Week in September. Let’s get through this pandemic first. Let’s focus on being safe and staying healthy and being respectful of other’s

space. When there is a vaccine, we can have the most amazing Fashion Week ever. I do think that September may be a virtual experience rather than a physical one. Everyone is desperate for recommended content to watch these days. What have you watched lately that you loved? I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries and older films. I would recommend Paris Is Burning, Grey Gardens, Hoops Dreams, and Honeyland. There are so many more, but those are a few. Is acting something you’re still focusing on? I would love to do more acting. It’s such a wonderful form of expression. What’s on your bucket list? Having a nice dinner party with my friends. [Laughs] But really.

This year marks the eleventh year of my relationship with SI. My first shoot was in Turkey with Anne V. Each time, I show up for SI, I always feel blessed and privileged. Unlike other publications, I have grown and evolved with this magazine. It is truly the first publication that celebrated inclusion in body positivity from Kate Upton to Ashley Graham. SI continues to push equality in beauty, by celebrating a 56-year-old model [Kathy Jacobs] and a transgender model [Valentina Sampaio]. I can’t say the same about many magazines out there, so I’m proud to be part of this brand. I have celebrated and pushed diversity with all my work from the past 15 years. I cast the first Asian model in a GUESS campaign, and I fight to have black models featured on covers of magazines that don’t traditionally feature them. But diversity isn’t just about the person in front of the lens; the team behind the lens is so important. I champion to include diversity on my team.

How do you think we can keep this spirit of inclusion going? Through the efforts of the #BLM movement, we are finally seeing true changes happening in our industry in terms of diversity. Publications are making these changes because of the fear of backlash. To me, I don’t care if this is the reason for change, as long as we are moving in the right direction. As an AsianAmerican, I have fought for Asians to be recognized in the U.S. fashion industry for years. I think changes have to begin in your own community. Being honest, I am often ashamed of Asians in the fashion industry. Our community in the U.S. doesn’t often support one another, but we must take example from designers like Jason Wu and editors like Lindsay Peoples Wagner [Teen Vogue] who talk the talk and walk the walk when it comes to inclusion in fashion.

What’s next for you? Next for me is to stay present at all times while recognizing injustice in our community and keeping the dialogue open so we can all make changes.

Last year, Max Mara received the CNMI Recognition for Sustainability Award for its new Cameluxe technology at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards. The brand is featuring this ultra-fine insulating process as part of its Max Mara The Cube Fall/Winter ’20 collection in nine styles. It’s made through a procedure that is less impactful in terms of energy consumption, waste production, water usage, and CO2 emission. Cameluxe is a new frontier for ecologically responsible fashion, giving new life to otherwise discarded materials.

WHAT IS

UPCYCLING? It’s a neologism that keeps together two concepts that don’t always go hand in hand—first, the idea of recycling, and second, the idea of improvement and quality. The goal is to create less waste by making the most out of every possible material and fabric involved in the production process. In this case, discarded camel hair fabrics are upcycled from coats in order to create a warm insulation. This pad is capable of maintaining the same properties of virgin materials, without requiring additional consumption.

HOW IT WORKS

1

2

3

Recovered fabrics are gathered and sorted from Max Mara’s manufacturers in Italy.

They are then transformed into fine fibers through a mechanical process.

Next, the fibers are blended with recycled polyester, creating a highperforming insulating mix, ready to be processed to create the pad.

Personal Style Philosophy: “My personal style approach is elegant and chic—clean lines with just a bit of bohemian. Our stylist on The View, Fran Taylor, knows my style, but will also help push me out of my comfort zone. I tend to like things that are tailored with just a pop of color—orange, burnt gold, and moss green. I also love a fun accessory—a piece of tortoise jewelry or my Samira 13 Jewelry sunburst necklace, which I practically never take off!” Favorite Brands: “I love Sergio Hudson and Ulla Johnson. You can also find me in Maje, Derek Lam, and Chloé, and if I can wear a piece of Samira 13 jewelry with an outfit, I always will.” East End Shopping Haunts: “I mainly do my shopping in Sag Harbor and love balancing out my closet with a mix of designer and affordable pieces. Joey Wölffer is incredible for high-end shopping and it’s bohemian, which is perfect for my relaxed summer wardrobe. There’s a great boutique in Sag Harbor called Sunny; it always has amazing finds and unique clothes that I love as much as I love its name! Flashbacks is also the best place to buy trendy, inexpensive finds.” Best Fashion Advice: “My stylist Fran Taylor told me, ’When you get dressed, give yourself a once over and take off that one extra piece.’ I’m also a firm believer that clothes don’t need to be designer or expensive to look amazing. I’m really a thrift shop girl; I also have my old faithful pieces that I’m attached to. I like vintage a lot; get me a vintageshop-find Chanel jacket and a Gap T-shirt, and I’m ready to go!” Never Be Caught Wearing: “That’s easy… neon!” Summer Uniform: “A straw hat, sunglasses, and a maxi dress is my goto outfit all summer long.” Fashion Inspiration: “No question, my No. 1 fashion inspiration is Jackie O. I would say my style is Jackie O meets Zoë Kravitz—elegant, yet boho chic.”

My favorite store is probably Deep Blue Vintage in Montauk; I always find the best gems in there.” Summer Uniform: “A long boho skirt and a crop top over a bikini has been my go-to every day.” Fashion Inspirations: “Sharon Tate—she’s forever a perfect example of effortless, feminine style— and Brigitte Bardot.”

It’s fun!” Summer Uniform: “I’m very casual! I tend to wear my girlfriend’s T-shirts over a bikini I made, with my 15-year-old’s Levi’s jean shorts. Personal Style Philosophy: “My style is very garden fairy/pink princess most of the time. Then there’s my 12-year-old-boy alter ego that comes out sometimes who just wants to wear boxer shorts and scour resale websites for vintage skate tees. I think it’s important to have balance and mix it up.” Favorite Brands: “LoveShackFancy, Pyer Moss, and RE/DONE.” East End Shopping Haunts: “Botanica Bazaar for all things wellness and skincare, and of course Cynthia Rowley.” Best Fashion Advice: “Doesn’t matter what you wear, just as long as you are there.” Never Be Caught Wearing: “A thong bikini.” Fashion Inspirations: “Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Brigitte Bardot.”

SELBY DRUMMOND

Personal Style Philosophy: “I always like things to be a little wrong, so my looks are never too precious. I grab a lot of influence from menswear, and always like to figure out how I can translate it to look sexy, feminine, and comfortable but dressy.” Favorite Brands: “My go-to’s for evening are Ronny Kobo, The Attico, and Alessandra Rich paired with shoes from Brother Vellies. In the daytime, I’m lowkey and love track suits that I pair with my Nikes or a clear-heeled shoe from Yeezy. Some of my favorite sweats are Pangaia and Amié Leon Dore.” East End Shopping Haunts: “In no particular order (but these are all female-owned shops and the owners happen to be friends of mine): Love Adorned, Warm, Botanica Bazaar, Cynthia Rocket, and Wyld Blue. Also, Montauk Wine Company is an incredible black-female-owned business, which I always try to support.” Never Be Caught Wearing: “I was about to say I would never be caught without a pedicure, but since COVID my feet have been pretty grim.” Summer Uniform: “These days, because we have been in the midst of renovating our house, I am usually in head to toe Skims. They make great transitional looks that feel cute all times of day. Then when I have time to run to the beach, I usually wear Minimale Animale or Inamorata Swim because I like skimpier bottoms.” Fashion Inspiration: “I like pulling inspiration from menswear and my kids. I have never really been one to— funny enough—obsess over fashion too much. I guess if I feel sexy and powerful, then it will be a good day.”

Personal Style Philosophy: “Maybe it’s because I’ve lived on the Upper East Side for two decades that I gravitate toward more classic, tailored, traditionally feminine silhouettes. I’ll incorporate trends when they complement my style, but I believe clothes should help you feel like the best version of yourself, so I wear what I think reflects my personality and lifestyle. I also believe fashion is truly art. I’ve spent years collecting Oscar de la Renta gowns because I adore their exquisite design and construction— they’re enduring pieces that can be worn for a lifetime. As Mr. de la Renta once said, ’Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.’ ” Favorite Brands: “Oscar de la Renta for evening gowns; Carolina Herrera and Erdem for cocktail dresses; Balmain blazers and custom-tailored shirts for everyday life; Saloni and Borgo De Nor for summer dresses; J.Crew for classic wardrobe staples; Chanel for handbags; M.Gemi flats for walking the city; and vintage David Webb cocktail rings when I want to add a little sparkle.” Summer Uniform: “As summer residents of Shelter Island, my family and I often get around via our boat, so I embrace nautical chic. My go-to look is Saint Laurent leather slides paired with high-waisted shorts and a striped La Ligne top. I top it off with a pair of Linda Farrow sunglasses and a Lola raffia straw hat. The Loewe Flamenco Knot Sailor Tote Bag is my favorite carryall for afternoons on the water.” Never Be Caught Wearing: “All black in the summertime. I was searching for joyful summer masks in April and wasn’t able to find anything that I loved, not to mention the lead time was six-plus weeks. I decided to make my own masks. I made enough for my family and had some left over, so I told my Instagram followers to DM me if they were interested. QUEEN BEACH BABES For more than two decades, Shoshanna has been a staple for women of all sizes; founder and Sag Harbor resident Shoshanna Gruss (below).

WONDER WOMAN

SHOSHANNA GRUSS’ namesake label, Shoshanna, has been dressing women for 20-plus years with no signs of slowing down. We recently got on the phone with the Sag Harbor–based designer for a socially distanced call to find out the secret to her longevity, and how she’s been raising three kids while running her own business.

How have you been getting through the year? We’re going step by step. I was optimistic in the beginning. We worked up until the last minute and closed when we had to close in March. We do the majority of our production in New York, so in the early stages, we were okay when things were really only affecting China. I pulled a lot back from what we produced there, which seemed smart in the beginning, and then China reopened and we couldn’t really do much. We had already produced Swim and shipped it all. We were able to keep on everyone in the business, and everyone worked smoothly from home. One of my best pattern makers is a perfect size 4, so she’s our fit model! We’d do Zoom fittings. We’re making it work. It’s doable to do this remotely. My team adapted. The hardest part was that the stores wanted to cancel everything at first, then they wanted half and then they

wanted more. It was terrifying and all over the place. We managed to cut back where we needed to, but it was a lot of adjusting and being flexible. How have you been juggling being a mom with three kids and also working? It was horrible! [Laughs] It really was. Anyone with kids who are in first grade through fourth grade with homeschooling had it the worst. My oldest daughter, who is in high school, would get breakfast, go in her room, and came out for lunch and dinner. She was able to do all the Zooms herself. My son’s class did a play. We recorded the lines, and they spliced it all together. It was beautiful. All the kids’ schools did a really nice job. I was never meant to be a teacher. I don’t think parents should be the kids’ teachers. It blurs the lines of so many different roles. We made it. Nobody celebrated harder than me on the last day of school!

Let’s talk about your line! Since we last chatted, the swimwear line went sustainable. Yes! As a manufacturer, I feel a responsibility. Obviously the world we live in is going through some of the most painful times in my lifetime, and prior to this year we were concerned about the environment and each of us contributing. We wanted to make sure we were putting out beautiful quality and careful products that aren’t going to do any more damage. We were always trying to reduce our footprint. We’re constantly talking about how to use less material in shipping. We worked with this one company that was using this fabric made of recyclable plastic bottles that they found in the ocean. It was actually some of the nicest quality fabric we’ve ever used, so we decided to print on it and go full force. If I could make the whole collection that way, and maybe we can, it would be

important to me and the people I work with. We’re hoping everyone joins along. The brand is more than 20 years old now. Did you take a moment to take that in? I look back and ask, how does this happen? 1998 was a different time in the world and fashion. The economy was different. The Internet wasn’t a thing yet. The styles have gone in so many different directions. One of the things is that we have stayed true to who we are. We know who our customer is. We’re a very inclusive brand. That was a big part of the DNA when we first started to be more inclusive of different women’s body types. A lot of [brands] give lip service, but they still don’t really do it. I’m obviously intrigued or even competitive when I hear other brands doing something, then I look and it’s no different. They just said it. They cut it bigger? That’s not exactly right. Women have come up to me since the beginning and said I’m the only one who makes swimsuits that fit them or I make dresses that address their body type. We’ve stayed true to that and celebrate all different body types with timeless pieces that women can wear over and over again. That’s another thing. Women say they’ve had their pieces for a million years. We don’t follow the trends, and we’re not too saturated in the market. Those aren’t huge ideas, but that’s what kept us going. I’ve watched a lot of the brands around me, I could think of 50, who aren’t around anymore. Sometimes if you’re the favorite child, you have nowhere to go but down. We’ve always been this tried-and-true brand. We’ve stayed true to our customer and haven’t tried to be everything to everyone. It’s still special. We’re still kind of indie, even if we sell to Neiman’s, Saks, and Bloomingdale’s. We understand that every dress has its own name. Can you tell us a little more about that fun fact? How do you name them? It all depends! Sometimes I think we need a baby name book. It started when I would name them after

my friends or if a dress has a 1950s feel; we have fun with them. There are some names I don’t ever want said out loud! We have a list of banned names. It’s a fun way to talk about them as women. Sometimes we can’t name a look, and we feel really bad about it. But we usually come up with one. Sometimes I’m like, “How did this dress get this name?” You’ve designed thousands of swimsuits at this point. Where are they? Do you archive them? I have every bathing suit, fabric, and cover-up. Everything in the beachwear line is saved in boxes that are labeled at my house in Long Island. I kept the first three seasons of all the dresses, but then it got to be too much. Now I just save my favorites. My daughter bought a dress from my 1999 collection, my second collection, on a vintage website last week. She didn’t even know it was my dress. What a compliment! Except I thought it could have been sold for a little more! It was Liberty print fabric! Do you wear your line all the time? I wear a lot of jeans and sweatshirts. In the summer, I’m pretty much always in a bathing suit and a sweatshirt. I almost always wear my line. I love shopping and go once in awhile, but nothing ever fits me. My line fits me well, and I enjoy it. I haven’t bought anyone else’s slimline or beach cover-up since…I can’t remember. Before we were doing separates, department stores refused to buy the separates from me, and I said, “The line doesn’t work if we don’t do it that way. Do you sell your bras and underwear like that?” They said they didn’t and I said, “Why do you sell swim that way?” I said I would take back every piece that didn’t sell if it didn’t work. I didn’t have to take back a piece. Prior to that everything was small, medium, or large, and they were sold as that. Now you can’t find a line that sells that way.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS Shoshanna isn’t just swimsuits. The brand has a beloved ready-to-wear collection.

You’ve been coming to the Hamptons since you were a kid. What do you love about the area? When did you come out this year? We came here in the middle of March; I miss the city so much, but I’m not complaining to be out here. I always say that even though I’m a New York City girl and was born there and love it, I think I was born in the wrong spot. I would rather be barefoot all day long with sand in my hair. I like when sand is in my car! I like when I come at 7 p.m. and we’re covered in sand and we eat in wet bathing suits and everyone is red and shiny and we go to bed. That’s my favorite vision of life. I’m always on the beach and in the water. I’m sucked in by the shells, the animals, and the beauty out here. I was lucky to travel with my parents my whole life, and I’ve seen some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, but we have some of them right here. They are magnificent. It’s obviously changed a ton since I was little, but the stuff that I always loved is still the same. Once the weather changed [this year], my summer is kind of the same as it always has been. I’m not a super social creature out here as a grown-up. When I was younger, I was for sure. What are your favorite spots in the area? My treat, because we’ve been cooking a lot, is sushi from Sen [in Sag Harbor]. We love Ocean Road Beach in Bridgehampton, and Main Beach is super fun. My favorite spot in all the Hamptons is my two chairs outside and sitting at the water and looking at the sunset at night.

HAVERHILL LEACH comes from generations of jewelry makers, so it was no surprise when she launched her own eponymous line in 2013. The New Englander is creating eclectic yet classic pieces full of color, and some are even customizable. THE DAILY SUMMER got the scoop on the must-have brand that’s popping up all over the East End. When did you first become interested in jewelry design? It seems to run in the family! I grew up walking the factory floor of my family’s jewelry manufacturing company that started in the 1800s. My interest in how things are made and what makes them beautiful started at an early age, I think

because of this exposure. I always knew I would create jewelry like the four generations before me, but I first wanted to dip my toes in other fields. I was a handbag designer in New York, a swimwear designer in L.A., and an interior designer in Rhode Island, but jewelry’s my most favorite medium.

SUMM UMME ER GEM

Do you get any advice from your family? My parents are my constant advisors. My mother is my style guru, so whenever I launch a new item, I make sure she likes it first. I turn to my dad for all things manufacturing, which is often! How involved in the process are you? We are a small business, so you could say I wear lots of hats, and I’m very hands on. I sketch each design by hand and then work closely with my jewelers to edit the items until they meet my expectations. We make a lot of samples right in our studio in Warren, Rhode Island. The only thing that separates my desk from the jeweler’s bench is a ping-pong table. What made you decide to make pieces customizable? Prior to selling our jewelry mostly online, I traveled the country selling at trunk shows and communicating face to face with our customers on the regular. I kept hearing requests for items in birthstones. Ladies would layer different necklaces incorporating their

We’re always adding to our Personalized Birthstone Collection. It’s fun to play online and design your own piece. First, you choose the number of stones, then you select which birthstone goes where. It’s very interactive. Once you order, we make each item in five business days or less. We’ve just launched our Personalized Birthstone Earrings. Do you have any celeb fans? January Jones, Ashley Graham, Jana Kramer, and Keltie Knight have all worn the brand! Where do you get inspiration from? New England is where I grew up and where I’ve returned to after many years of working in New York and Los Angeles. It’s where our jewelry is made and where my family has been creating jewelry for more than 100 years. On top of all that, New England style is clean, not flashy or trendy, but classic and timeless. I strive to design jewelry that has these qualities, with a modern spin. From the colorful fall foliage of Vermont and the endless coastline of Rhode Island, to the cobblestone streets of Nantucket and the colonial brick homes of Boston, I’m surrounded by beautiful places that have stood the test of time. We New Englanders have a true love and pride for this beauty. We fight hard to preserve the nature, the architecture, and the New England values of being understated whilst having tenacity and, of course, a witty sense of humor! For example, I just came out with a Sunset Collection that is made up of yellow gold, Pink Tourmalines, and Orange Citrines, inspired by the sunset I view from our local beach. What jewelry pieces do you think work poolside or at the beach? If you have seen my hair, you’ll know that I’m a total beach girl, so I design easy, comfortable, solidgold jewelry that I don’t have to remove before my morning swim in the waves. Our entire Birthstone Collection is perfect for this. Most of my customers never take off their Birthstone Necklaces and you don’t want to, especially when your little ones’ birthstones are represented. What’s the perfect summer accessory for you? Aside from layers of gold and gemstones, I would say my favorite summer accessory is a good sandal. I have a bit of a sandal addiction. Will you be coming to the Hamptons this summer? My plan was to come to the Hamptons to participate in the Hampton Classic Horse Show as we do every year. Sadly, due to COVID-19, this year’s Classic is not happening. What are your favorite Hamptons haunts? When I go to the Hamptons, I feel like I spend about two hours slowly grazing through Citarella! I used to live in the West Village, so it brings so many memories of my old stomping ground. Having dinner in the magical outdoor courtyard of Sant Ambroeus in

Southampton is a must. The best people-watching is from the front porch of the American Hotel in Sag Harbor. Where will you be getting away? Vermont is my home away from home and my escape to lake life. I’m fortunate enough to live in coastal Rhode Island, so every day feels like a beach vacation. Are you working with any charities? For Black Lives Matter, we’ve just launched a Hope Collection, of which all profits go to Color of Change. For the LGBT+ community, we’re excited about our Rainbow Collection, of which 10 percent of proceeds go to the Trevor Project. When COVID-19 first struck, we participated in a six-week campaign to raise money for No Kid Hungry. What’s next for the brand? We’re excited to bring more personalized options to our customers that can be made in record time. We’re focusing on keeping a low carbon footprint by continuing to make everything local, including our packaging. We’re looking forward to partnering with more nonprofits to do all we can to give back.

TRE REA ASUR URE E Yes, we’re all dreaming of a week in SaintTropez. Luckily, we have MARINA COCHER, the founder of Bridgehampton boutique Marina St. Barth, who unearths unique finds from around the world. Here, she tells THE DAILY SUMMER what’s in store this season and all about her latest ventures. By EDDIE ROCHE

You’ve obviously had to work with customers in a different way. Tell us about how you’ve adjusted. In light of our current situation, we’ve taken advantage of the technology world. This includes virtual appointments through FaceTime and sending our fashions through the mail so people can try on items of clothing in the safety of their home. E-mail has definitely been our best friend as it’s one of the few ways to broadcast our newer collections to a large portion of our customers. What was the concept when you first created Marina St. Barth? Our original concept was simple. We wanted to

organize fashion shows in different high-end restaurants that represented our brand. After the show, customers would be able to purchase the designs. This not only allowed us to reach a wider variety of people, but it brought the runway to people as well. Tell us about your Bridgehampton location! It’s been five wonderful years that we’ve been located up on the second level of Pierre’s Restaurant in Bridgehampton. I chose this location because I, myself, was born and raised in France; therefore, the French cuisine made me feel at home. We are open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Labor Day, and we may stay open until Columbus Day.

ALL IMAGES COURTESY

What’s new at Marina St. Barth this summer? We’ve recently updated our inventory to include designer face masks and our own branded alcohol hand sanitizer. Not to mention beautiful dresses from collections around the world and men’s dress shirts from Italy that are 100 percent linen, making them the perfect material for a hot summer day! What have the past few months been like for you? We unfortunately had to close all our locations during the quarantine; however, we’re pleased to announce that we’re back up and running. Our newest adventure has been adding a boutique on the world-famous Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida!

“IN LIGHT OF OUR CURRENT SITUATION, WE’VE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE TECHNOLOGY WORLD. THIS INCLUDES VIRTUAL APPOINTMENTS THROUGH FACETIME.… E-MAIL HAS DEFINITELY BEEN OUR BEST FRIEND.” What are some of the brands that you carry in the stores? We carry our own brand, Marina St. Barth, along with new rising designers from around the world. We don’t like to state brands here as I like to keep my selections private, making the customers feel special because they can find one-of-a-kind items that you won’t see in other stores. Tell us about how looks are grouped. I hand chose all the items in the store myself, and each collection is from a certain area of the world. My favorite items are the ones with vibrant colors and patterns as you can really see the diversity. The dresses are grouped by location and are true to the area of the world they are inspired from. Are you available online? We began to launch our online store when we heard about the pandemic; however, it didn’t feel true to our brand. We pride ourselves on being as niche as possible with our private customers. This is why they come to my stores, because they know they’re getting one-of-akind pieces that you truly cannot find anywhere else. What are you doing to make customers feel safe inside your stores? Safety is always our top priority, and that’s why people

are checked for their temperature before entering. Everyone must wear a mask when browsing the store. I welcome them wearing a mask. We also give every customer our own hand sanitizer and steam the clothes on a daily basis because that’s the best way to kill germs on fabric. We see you are selling face masks. Tell us about them! The face masks that I created are all hand sewn and made of three layers to help fight off airborne illness. They’re all washable, easy to breath in, and utilize adjustable elastics to fit all face shapes and sizes. There are many designs and fabrics to chose from, so definitely stop by Pierre’s to see the full collection! I have recently created my own branded hand sanitizer, which is made with organic lavender and aloe vera to help soothe the skin because no one likes the smell of alcohol. It’s proven to kill 99.9 percent of germs, and it smells so good that I often use it as perfume! It’s also FDA approved. When did you open your Palm Beach store? We opened our Palm Beach location on March 1st and plan to be there year round. I fell in love with the store and have always dreamed of one day opening in Palm Beach. It’s great to see dreams come true!

Any plans to open more locations? We’re living in such an unpredictable world, therefore I think three locations is where we will stay for the time being. My stores in Saint Barth’s, Palm Beach, and the Hamptons are doing amazing; expanding is something I don’t see in the near future, but who knows! International travel is pretty much halted this summer. Where are you dying to go when we can comfortably travel again? My mother fell ill before the virus, and I haven’t been able to see her as she lives in Paris. She has always wished to travel to the island of Corsica, and I hope we will be able to take that trip together soon! What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t working? I’m an exercise fanatic. It’s important to live a healthy and active lifestyle, so I run and swim as often as I can. I’m currently in the Hamptons and am loving the beautiful summer weather. My morning routine consists of waking up and going for a run first thing. You’re often at Pierre’s. What’s your favorite thing to order on the menu there? I love the Chilean sea bass, served with asparagus, potato purée, and leek with beurre blanc. So yummy!

Veronica M founder VERONICA MONROY-FERRER has had quite a year. She tells THE DAILY SUMMER all about her latest collection and why working through the lockdown was an unforgettable experience. By NANDINI VAID What’s new with the line? We are definitely pivoting the line to make more items that you can wear now! We’re especially grateful during this time to have the luxury of making all our

We offer work-appropriate tops, so that our customer can go to a happy hour after work in the same thing. Our jumpsuits provide a polished look and yet are super comfortable and easy to care for. And my favorite for summer, our rompers, are the perfect length to wear anywhere. Who is the Veronica M woman? Tomorrow is a new day, and a new you! We have to continue to push forward and hope for the best. At our headquarters, we’re continuing to make a great product, which we hope puts a smile on our customer’s face. We bring that inspiration to our face covers as well. They now come in fun summer colors, and we’re so excited to add our new Holiday Glitz prints to our masks! Where can we shop for your designs? clothing in Los Angeles. We love to see what styles and colors our customers love the most and find ways to provide even more for them. Now we are embracing a new lifestyle, rather than trends. Tell us about the new leisurewear line. Our new leisurewear line uses the softest and most comfortable French terry and jersey fabric. We reacted quickly to the needs of our customers and the new normal that we have stepped into. With the recent stay-at-home orders, we felt that our customers were mostly working from home but still wanted to look and feel their best. By creating more of the leisurewear, we’re able to help with that! We saw you are making masks! What was it like working during the quarantine? Making masks in the beginning of the outbreak of the pandemic was unreal, intense, challenging, but also amazing. I don’t think I can describe how hard it was to work every day, physically picking up rolls of fabric myself, helping trim masks, answering the influx of e-mails until 2 a.m., then do it all over again the next day. It has been rewarding to be able to provide a product that has helped many stay safe while also giving jobs to at least half of my team. It has been an experience I will never forget. How do you describe the Veronica M line to a new customer? The Veronica M line is a lifestyle fashion brand that

SERVICE WITH STYLE Veronica M has been making masks throughout the pandemic, which are still in high demand.

TIMELESS PIECES (From far left): Planet’s founder Lauren Grossman; Fall looks from the brand’s upcoming collection. (Opposite page): Summer styles from Planet’s Spring/Summer collection.

PER ERSO SON N

Planet founder LAUREN GROSSMAN is a self-made woman who has created a brand that’s giving women globally exactly what they’re looking for. She tells THE DAILY SUMMER her remarkable and inspiring story of how she self-funded the line, survived cancer (twice!) along the way, and now wants her designs everywhere on the planet. By EDDIE ROCHE

Tell us a little about your background. What were you doing before Planet? I was a multiline sales rep in the southeast, from Florida to Atlanta. I had showrooms in both locations, and I would go on the road to all the boutiques. Was that the inspiration that made you say to yourself that you could do this? Exactly. After 10 years of working with so many different artists and manufacturers, they would always come to me when they were going to present the line.

They asked if I liked their color palette, what should they name the color, what do you think of this? I said to myself that after 10 years and only making 10 percent commission, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is and do this myself. How did you even do that? Did you have to find an investor? I had some money in the stock market in the mid ’90s and the NASDAQ was going crazy and doubling all the time, so I took my money out of that and started with that seed money for Planet. I knew nothing about

manufacturing. I had a friend who was a manufacturer in the industrial area in Miami, and I called him up and said I wanted to manufacture. He took me and showed me what you had to do as far as fabrics, the width of the goods, laying them up, how to make a wholesale price, everything about the background mathematics to make this work. We went through that money real fast! I did a New York trade show and it was an instant success. I then had to go home and get more money to manufacture it. I took a home equity loan on my own house. I put up my own money. I’ve never had to borrow a dime, and I don’t owe any money. Because of my background of being a sale rep, we always waited for our money. I’d ask for my check and waited. I always said if I hired a sale rep, I would always pay them immediately. Twenty-two years later, ask anyone, I don’t owe a dime. I live that way because it was hard for me wondering where my commission was. Did you always have a passion for fashion? OMG! I came out fully dolled up. I was obsessed with Barbie. She came in this plastic and you’d have the shoes and the handbags and the earrings. It was never just about putting shorts and a T-shirt on her for me. It was always about the whole package. I also have a sister who is 13 years older than me. Growing up in the 1960s and seeing her get dressed up to go out in this iconic Vidal Sassoon haircut and black eyeliner with these mod dresses with go-go boots, I was in awe. I just wanted to have that for my Barbie doll. Going into

“THE COMPANY SHOULD GO TO THE MOON AND BACK. I SEE IT EVERYWHERE AS SIZELESS, AGELESS, SEASONLESS, CHIC CLOTHING. IT’S INFINITE. IT HAS NO END.” the 1970s, when I was in fifth grade, my sister went into Manhattan and bought me platform shoes from a London designer to wear with flare-bottom jeans. I was like 60 pounds. My sister would take me shopping for clothes and one year my mom said, “Show me the clothes,” and I came out with this long maxi coat and this hat on my head. I opened up the coat and there I am in hot pants, granny boots, and fishnet stockings. Fifth grade! My mom goes, “Where’s the school clothes?” and I said, “Mom! This is what’s in fashion!” I had a 60th-birthday party last year with all these old pictures of me, and one of the girls who works for me said, “You look like baby Anna Wintour!” Do you still have the Barbies? We moved to Florida when I was almost 16 and at that time my mother said, and I quote, “You’re going to be a teenager, you’ll move to Florida, you’ll get a boyfriend, you’ll forget about Barbie!” She made me give away my Barbie house, my Barbie pool, my Barbie car, everything Barbie went to my younger cousin. I don’t have any of it. I wish that I did. Sorry! Why is the brand called Planet? When I started I was looking for fabrics that were all natural elements, natural fibers like cottons and linens. They were elements of the earth, and the colors that I chose were always muted colors and also derivative of the earth, like sage and cloud and sun. It created an environment, and that’s how Planet came about. Where is it made? We have pima cotton T-shirts and sweaters that are made in Lima, Peru. We have a pretty large factory there. They are the No. 1 producer of pima cotton in the world. All the wovens are made in Miami. What are your best sellers? Our best sellers are the pima cotton T-shirts and sweatshirts. Women call them the Lay’s potato chip of the line. Like a potato chip, you can’t eat just one. These sweaters, you can’t have just one. They come in many colors and shapes. You have a ton of positive energy! What’s your secret? Clean living. I exercise all the time. I eat pretty clean. Most of all, this journey of becoming my own manufacturer and creating my own destiny, I have so much gratitude for what I have accomplished. I’m in a really good space. I’m grateful every day. I had cancer twice. I had cancer when I was 28 years old, and at that time I was selling the Madonna bustiers. That was the whole look. I’d go across the country with them, and they told me at the same time that they had to cut me open. I said, “I can’t do that! I have to go around!” I was strutting around the country. I was not stopping for cancer. Luckily, I got it into remission. Then 10 years ago, I had breast cancer. I thought, “Oh, no! Just when things are going to great with Planet, I’m going to lose the business.” Well, it just kept going. I got through that. I’m a two-time cancer survivor and that gives you a lot of gratitude.

What’s your advice to anyone going through cancer? You have to keep a positive mental attitude, and it’s not so bad anymore. You will get through it. There is an other side. You’re based in Florida. Is it harder doing what you do there? I’m originally from New York. I’m a Long Island girl. Throughout my career, I’ve always had a New York presence. Whatever trade show there was, I took a big booth and decorated it to the max. I wanted to create the visual impact before you even knew the concept of the line. I wanted to draw in the people and the traffic. Whatever New York had to offer, I was in it to win it. It didn’t matter that I was based in Florida. I think being in Florida and being a native New Yorker, you have a competitive edge. New Yorkers are aggressive people. In the past five years when Planet really started to soar, I opened up a New York showroom and hired Lisa Attea, a director of sales who is now the vice president. We do have that New York presence. Why has the company grown so much in the past five years? Once the buyers got the product in and saw how it sold, they made their margins on it, so they’d constantly reorder. If the customer bought the sweater in black, she’d say, “What other colors does it come in?” We’re a layering concept of clothing, so the more you put on and buy, the more different options you have. The market share is getting larger and larger with each customer. I also said to boutiques, give me part of your real estate, like a store-within-a-store concept, like Ralph Lauren did back in the day. I went around to stores and I created what I called a Planetarium—a whole area of Planet. I hired someone within my company and named her the Planet specialist. She would fly to these stores and do what you would call a trunk show, but we’d call it an in-store event. Now they had the most Planet on the floor, and my Planet specialist would come in and not only train their staff, she would dress them in it, dress their mannequins. We would do these events twice a year for Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. It created a buzz in the stores and rang the register. How do you want to see the company grow? The company should go to the moon and back. I see it everywhere as sizeless, ageless, seasonless, chic clothing. It’s infinite. It has no end. Where can people find the brand? We sell in better-end boutiques all over Manhattan and Long Island. We also have a distributor in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. It’s a global brand. It’s all over the planet. When the pandemic hit and the world was shut down, we opened an E-commerce site [shopplanetbylaureng.com] so our addicted customers could still purchase. Business never really stopped. Who do you look up to in the fashion world? My muse is Donna Karan. I read her book, My Journey, and there were pages in there describing her Seven Easy Pieces concept of dressing. I started to shake. I called my sister and read it to her. I said, “Listen to this! She wants a cotton shirt, leggings, a

skirt, a sweater, and take it from day to night.” That is Planet! You can go anywhere in the world and you pack a small suitcase and take these seven layer pieces with different shoes or accessories. I also loved her no prints, basic colors. That was a rich, beautiful line. Do you see Planet getting as large as Donna Karan? Are you interested in that? It’s absolutely possible. I could see that happening. I could also see Planet flagship stores all over the world. That could be! It would take a lot of money and energy, so I better stay well!

IS IN

Dr. Praeger’s is the pioneering brand that was giving people healthy food options before it was the norm. We checked in with CEO LARRY PRAEGER to find out what’s new with this familyrun business, get his take on why people are getting off of meat, and delve into what’s so perfect about their perfect burger. By EDDIE ROCHE

It’s hard to believe Dr. Praeger’s launched in 1994. My father, Dr. Peter Praeger, and his partner, Dr. Eric Somberg, started the brand because they were searching for healthy, easy, and accessible food for their patients. With nothing on the market satisfying their high standards, they set out to create their own food brand. You became CEO in 2013 from a sales role to relaunch the company. What were your initial challenges? I was determined to elevate the brand and extend the legacy of my family’s food company to reach more American families. There was a great foundation in place, and the brand was ready to scale with innovation and distribution. My dad and partners always felt plant-based, clean, and nutritious frozen food was underrepresented in grocery stores. Scaling an existing company with new category innovation and rebranding always comes with obstacles, but I surrounded myself with a smart and dedicated team who supports our mission.

the U.S. for a variety of reasons, whether those be personal taste, dietary restrictions, lifestyle choices, environmental impact, and more. I think meat alternatives will keep growing as products on the market become cleaner and more delicious. People who are new to meat alternatives can be skeptical of the taste and the quality, which I think is why it’s taken a bit of time to pick up. We hear you kept your factories open during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New Jersey. How did you make sure you kept employees safe? Due to increased grocery demand at the start of the pandemic and a fear of food shortages, we quickly pivoted to keep our factory open and fulfill the need for healthy frozen food. The factory ran at approximately 75 percent and was producing roughly 100,000 pounds of food each day. All staff was given proper protective gear, everyone entering the facility had their temperature checked, and lines were staffed at half capacity to ensure social distancing and extra time for regular deep cleaning and disinfecting. The health of the Dr. Praeger’s team is my top priority, and we took every precaution to keep everyone safe and comfortable throughout the process. What other products do you hope to eventually launch? We’re always looking to innovate and provide new options for our consumers. In fact, we’re working on many new items for all mealtime occasions. Some of these are new Pure Plant Protein meat alternative launches coming soon, as well as a local burger inspired by the coastal living in Long Island, New York. You have a really well-curated Instagram account. Why is it important to promote the brand through social media? Social media is so important because it allows us to engage our customer base, interact with them, and hear their wants, needs, and concerns. We love our social community and use the various platforms to share company information, product news, recipe ideas, and in general to see how Dr. Praeger’s fans use our products and share their creations. You’re also a partner in one of our favorite places, The Meatball Shop! What are your other business investments? I’m a true entrepreneur and love getting involved in businesses that cater to my own interests of health, wellness, and coming together with loved ones over a delicious meal. A couple of businesses I’m involved in beyond The Meatball Shop are Nothin’ But snacks and WellWell functional beverages. It’s a very different kind of summer this year. How are you adjusting? I don’t think anyone could have predicted a summer like this, but I’m trying to focus on the positives, like extra time at home with my kids and the health of my loved ones. You’re a Hamptons regular! What do you love about the area? I have a place in Water Mill, and it’s my favorite escape. The town is so full of life and nature at the same time. I’m grateful for time with my family here this year.

THE DR.

What did you learn from your father about running a business? Growing up watching my father pour his heart and soul into being a surgeon, manage a family, and launching Dr. Praeger’s was the best training I could’ve gotten. He taught me how to build a team and treat them like family. He taught me to take chances, to always be innovating or thinking differently, and he taught me the value of listening to and supporting our community. What does the company stand for today? Dr. Praeger’s is a family business, and we treat everyone we work with as part of our family. We believe bringing families together at mealtime is the biggest reward of the day and that those meals should be nutritious, delicious, and enjoyable. We believe in real ingredients. We’re committed to nutrition and wellness for everyone, and we proudly support organizations that share our commitment, challenge us to think differently, and embrace those in need. The brand is known for its California Veggie burger. What else is on the Dr. Praeger’s menu these days? We have nearly 60 terrific products available throughout the U.S. for every meal occasion. Although we are best known as a veggie burger brand with 15 different veggie burgers, for breakfast we offer three types of Oaties oatmeal dippin’ sticks, breakfast bowls, sides like hash browns, veggie puffs and vegetable cakes, Pure Plant Protein meat alternatives, Littles for kids, and more. We currently offer products that fit vegan, vegetarian, soy-free, gluten-free, Kosher, and non-GMO lifestyle choices. You can search for hundreds of easyto-make-at-home veggie-inspired recipes, and for our products by dietary needs on drpraegers.com to find a product for anyone in the family. I’m particularly excited about our growing line of Pure Plant Protein items spinning off from the success of our Perfect Burger, such as our Dr. Praeger’s new Perfect Turk’y, Perfect Sliders, and Perfect Grounds arriving at your local grocery store throughout summer and fall. You launched the Perfect Burger late last year. What makes it so perfect? What makes the Perfect Burger special is while it looks and tastes like meat, it’s made with Pure Pea Protein and infused with real vegetables, including sweet potato, butternut squash, and carrots. It’s soy-free, glutenfree, vegan, and packed with 20 grams of non-GMO plant protein. Overall, Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burger has less sodium and fat per serving than leading meatalternative burgers on the market and grills up perfectly. You also have a kids line and they’re tough customers. Dr. Praeger’s Littles were created for kids but is loved by consumers of all ages. We have four different kinds of Littles—kale, spinach, broccoli, and sweet potato— and they all come in fun kid-friendly shapes like stars, dinosaurs, and teddy bears. They’re so popular because they’re quick and easy to make, fun for kids, and full of real vegetables and nutrients. People are really turning away from meat in this country. What do you think took so long? I do see meat consumption continuing to decline in

REPORT

DIARY Modern wellness brand Zolt has been combining plants and science to give consumers a portable and convenient way to incorporate CBD and fullspectrum hemp into their daily routine. THE DAILY SUMMER enlisted two of our staffers to try the latest offerings—Rise+ and Dreamy—to get the real scoop on why they’re everyday essentials.

Alex’s Zolt Rise+ Diary

Nandini’s Zolt Dreamy Diary

As The Daily Summer’s resident health and wellness nut, I was delighted when I was tasked with incorporating Zolt Rise+ into my everyday routine. I already work regularly with adaptogens and CBD, in tinctures primarily, so I was excited to testdrive a new product that combines my favorite wellness ingredients into one easy on-the-go Mixie Stick powder serving. Carting around 15 different vials of liquids just isn’t realistic or efficient—trust me, I’ve tried. A word on adaptogens for anyone not familiar: They are a select group of herbs and mushrooms that support your body’s natural ability to deal with stress. Hence the word “adapt” that’s nestled neatly in there. This can be physical, emotional, or mental stress—and let’s be honest, we all have plenty of each these days! Zolt Rise+ uses two of my all-time favorite adaptogens in its unique blend: astragalus and reishi. Astragalus has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and is often used for its antiviral properties, which stimulate the immune system. Reishi, aka Queen of the Mushrooms, has been used for more than 2,000 years in China and Japan to support wellbeing and just help you chill out. Combine that with the power of full-spectrum hemp, and you’re basically drinking magic immortality juice. I really felt the benefits of Zolt Rise+ throughout my week. It gave me more sustained energy during the day, but without any of the edge of having too many coffees. And it didn’t keep me up at night if I had more than one serving. (You can have up to eight Mixie Sticks per day.) Specifically, I loved it as a substitute for coffee. It was a replenishing lifesaver during Tracy Anderson streaming workouts, and was a refreshing treat to sip on during hikes. The tropical orange flavor is delightful—not overpowering, just a nice little boost to water. It may have even tricked me into hydrating more than I normally would because it was so tasty. I give Zolt Rise+ two enthusiastic thumbs up.

I’m always on the go. Living and working in NYC, I have an active lifestyle. But the past few months in lockdown totally threw me off balance, and my sleep schedule was completely upside down! With life getting back to somewhat normal now, I wanted to try something to help me relax and get my routine back in sync. So when I was asked to try out Zolt Dreamy, I was excited to see how it would work for me. This CBD drink mix is everything! I got a 30-day pack and have been drinking it before bedtime every night for the past two weeks. It has helped me reset, relax, and I’m sleeping so much better. And I have noticed that throughout the day I have a lot more energy than before. Also, it’s easy on the taste buds. I love the taste of Zolt Dreamy. It has a light honey-citrus flavor, and has 20 mg of CBD in each individual packet, called a Mixie Stick, which is so easy to use. It’s perfect with hot water as a tea, or over ice as a refreshing treat before bed. This organic delight is full of antioxidants, so not only are you getting your beauty sleep, but it also protects your skin and body from free radicals that cause damage. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to kick in, so it’s a great combination with my bedtime read. Zolt Dreamy gets me feeling completely relaxed; its CBD and adaptogens help soothe and repair your mind and body, while its melatonin (3 mg) whisks me off to dreamland quickly. Zolt Dreamy has worked wonders for me, and I’m now a fan. I wake up each morning well-rested from a full night’s sleep, feeling fresh and bright, ready to take on the day.
