The clock is ticking for anyone thinking about taking or completing the current GED test.

The current version of the test is set to expire at the end of this year and be replaced by a completely new, revamped version.

Farmers Market #1 remains in full swing

BY BOBBY J. SMITH Despite a cold and wet spring that put a damper on the early growing season, local produce sellers are doing brisk business at Farmers Market #1 on Shiloh Road.

By 10 a.m. on Friday local farmer Larry Mayfield was almost sold out. Only four large heads of cabbage remained on his table at the Farmers Market.

Though they were few, the cabbages were large enough to cover a significant portion of the table.

“I’ve got some even bigger than that,” Mayfield said with pride. “I grow them in three sizes — small, medium and large.”

The growing season started with more than its share of troubles. With too much rain and too cold temperatures, local farmers and patch farmers were stuck with conditions that couldn’t get much worse. But now, with June marking summertime’s official arrival, local growers are finally reaping the fruits of their labors.

Alcorn County grower Wayne Smith has grown and sold pro-

duce in Corinth for the last decade. For many years before that Smith raised vegetables with his mother. He can be found at the Farmers Market on Shiloh Road several days a week, along with his wife Janice and son Roger.

On Saturday his table was topped with onions, broccoli, English peas, cabbages, Yukon Gold potatoes and red potatoes.

“We’ll have green beans this week, and hot peppers, too,” said Smith.

She decided to apply for the internship back in middle school, recalled her mother, Kathryn Dilworth of Corinth.

“She was always so confident she would get it despite how competitive it is to get a spot,” said Dilworth. “I’m just so thrilled for her and so proud of her accomplishments with her studies.”

old stuff,� said Ricketts. “Bob Dylan is a big one I always go back to. And Johnny Cash taught me to play guitar, pretty much.�

Ricketts’ first got into Johnny Cash in the sixth grade, when the “Walk the Line� biopic came out. “I got some money for doing some job for my parents and went to the CD store and bought the

Folsom Prison and San Quentin albums,� Ricketts recalled. “I soaked those albums up. They were incredible to hear.�

Like many other children of the 1990s, Ricketts discovered Bob Dylan through the “Forrest Gump� soundtrack.

Another of his main musical heroes is Brian Wilson, the lead vocalist and main songwriter of the Beach Boys. The song

“God Only Knows� and the “Pet Sounds� album are near the top of Ricketts’ musical influences.

Ricketts discovered the song in the best way possible — live and in person. “I had never heard ‘God Only Knows’ until Bonnaroo last year,� he said. “Brian Wilson started playing it and, even though his voice has aged so, just hearing him sing

it, that melody just rung.

I heard the melody and chorus and the whole way home that melody just hung in my head.�

His musical education also owes a great deal to his older brother, Seth Ricketts. The elder Ricketts brother was an army paratrooper, and was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan three years ago. “He was really inspi-

rational,� said Ricketts. “He got me into Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Doors. I still love the Doors.�

Ricketts remembers riding with his brother, hearing the Ramones and Sex Pistols, when he was in kindergarten. “I remember my parents finding out he let me hear the Offspring — when I was in kindergarten or the first grade,�

Ricketts remembered. “They were so, so unhappy. But I didn’t realize what the songs were about till I got older.�

But back to the present.

For now the young musician is working on his songs and looking to book more shows in the near future. While Ricketts won’t put a date his next album’s completion, he says he is working on a new single right now.

And with a style that covers diverse genres, styles and a century worth of music, it’s certain that what he comes up with next will be worth listening to.

Patrick and Smith worked out a deal on some onions and potatoes, and then talk turns to tomatoes, which Smith says should be ready in about three weeks. “I live a block away — I’ll be here every week to get some tomatoes,� Patrick

said.

Smith currently has around 800 tomato plants growing on his family’s land east of Corinth. “They’ll be ready soon.

They’re about this high,� he said, holding his hand up to his shoulder.

Smith is also growing white and red peanuts. In recent years peanuts have become a viable choice for local produce sellers,

Smith said. With prices rising, peanut growers are now able to turn a profit, something that was near impossible for small growers in the past. On the other side of the market area are a pair of relative newcomers to the Corinth Farmers Market. For Chewalla, Tenn., residents Glen and Earlene Crabb, Saturday was their third time to sell what they had grown at the

little lot on Shiloh Road. “We really just started doing this, but we’re doing very well,� said Earlene.

The Crabbs’ offerings include squash, cucumbers, corn and potatoes. Soon they’ll add turnip greens, green beans and tomatoes to the list, with pumpkins later in the year.

Glen learned about the market from a neighbor, a gardening buddy who told

him that he should bring some of his produce to the Farmers Market if he grew more than he could eat and give away.

Now, after experiencing the Farmers Market for themselves, the Crabb couple definitely plan on coming back. “We’ll come maybe three or four times a week,� said Earlene. “We’re going to be regulars.�

Following a period of experimenting with electronic dance music on his “Summer Anthems for the Digital Age� songs, Ricketts’ next batch of songs will lean closer to the style of his recent “The Human Race EP,� a mixture of acoustic guitar and melodic songwriting married to samples and electronically-manipulated effects. While the style is far from retro, it is something of a return to his roots for Ricketts. “I started missing my guitar,� Ricketts said with a laugh. “‘The Human Race’ was very electronic-based, but the new on was all about synthesizer and stuff like that.

I’m not trying to recreate ‘The Human Race,’ but trying to go in that same vein.�

One facet of Ricketts’ constantly evolving sound is his encyclopedic knowledge of popular music. He can converse with equal expertise about artists from George Gershwin to Brian Jones to Animal Collective.

Ricketts is well-versed in music that hearkens back not only beyond his lifetime, but that of his parents as well. “I got back into the

five distinct sections: Language Arts (Writing), Language Arts (Reading), Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. The sections can be taken individually as a student completes their preparation for each section.

Billingsley explained that’s where the urgency comes in for current GED students. There are many who have taken one or more sections of the test, but for a variety of reasons have held off on completing all five. Those students must complete and pass the sections they have remaining by the end of this year or their scores will be wiped away and they’ll have to start completely over when the new version of the test

The revised test is expected to be more difficult and will feature new types of questions while being administered entirely on a computer.

Meeks said the new test will be broken into four basic content areas: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The test will add an additional essay question along with short answer questions and in-paragraph dropdown menu questions.

The GED Testing Service, providers of the test, say the new test is designed to more closely and accurately measure career and college readiness of students.

Splitting College Hill voting precinct looks like a good idea Election officials are proposing to split Alcorn County’s largest voting site into two precincts.

Based on the information provided, it looks like a good idea.

Fourth District Election Commissioner Keith Settlemires told the Board of Supervisors last week that he would like to see the College Hill precinct at the American Legion on South Tate Street split with the north Biggersville fire station becoming a new precinct.

College Hill is fairly evenly divided between city and non-city residents — 1,553 are Corinth residents, and 1,380 live outside the city. Corinth residents would continue to vote at the American Legion, and county residents would vote at the new fire station on U.S. Highway 45 south of Corinth.

This split would be a good move.

After observing several cycles of elections, Settlemires said he believes the change would help ease the crowds and eliminate confusion for poll workers who must determine which voters can vote for county superintendent of education.

Currently, poll workers have to provide bright colored slips of paper to split voters into those who can or can't vote in the superintendent's race.

With more than 2,900 voters on the books, sometimes people are left standing in line outside in hot or rainy conditions, he said.

Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell said he believes the county residents would like it and that it would be good for elderly residents who do not like the traffic and the crowds.

Supervisor Gary Ross, who votes at College Hill, agreed that it is a good idea.

The change, if approved by supervisors and the U.S. Department of Justice, would give Alcorn County 17 voting locations.

Although no action was taken, we encourage supervisors to do so.

Campbell, Clower came from same church I’m sure there are other small churches that have contributed significantly to this nation’s culture, but I likewise rather doubt that any church in America that has had a more profound impact on the culture of the rural South than has East Fork Baptist Church, located about a mile off Hwy. 24 in rural Amite County, Mississippi.

The church has been there for more than 200 years, not far from the east fork of the Amite River for which the church was named. With 240 or so members on the books, the present pastor says that “on a good Sunday” some 50 to 70 souls gather to worship.

There are literally hundreds of such small, rural houses of worship around Mississippi. But what makes this church and the Smithdale community east of Liberty is that they spawned two of the most memorable characters in Mississippi’s history — minister, writer and civil rights activist the Rev. Will D. Campbell and Nashville comedian and Christian storyteller Jerry Clower.

Campbell, born in 1924, and Clower, born in 1926, share the roots of their edu-

cations at East Fork Consolidated High School and both were embers Sid Salter m of East Columnist Fork Baptist Church.

Campbell was at age 17 ordained to preach at East Fork Baptist, where he had been baptized in June, 1931.

Clower accepted Christ as his savior at a July, 1939, revival and was baptized on the same day with his future wife, Homerline.

Campbell died June 3 in Nashville at age 88 after an extended illness. Clower died in 1998 at the age of 71. They interacted in church and in school. One local historian suggests in her writings that they were distantly related.

But that’s where the similarities end.

I was fortunate to come to know Jerry Clower reasonably well and to maintain a relationship with his late brother, Sonny, as well. Jerry Clower was loud and boisterous, the kind of man who sucked all the air out of the room when he entered.

His stories were funny, but clean. He never told a joke on

stage that he could not have told from the pulpit at East Fork Baptist Church. His was a born-again, evangelical Christian who was affiliated with Christian pursuits in both his business and personal life.

He used his fame to engage in evangelism and he avoided the trappings of fame. He did not associate with the more colorful colleagues he encountered at the Grand Ole Opry. He was a by the Good Book Christian who lived his faith each day.

Campbell, who I met in Oxford and with whom I maintained an intermittent correspondence, embraced the hard Nashville cases like Johnny Cash, Tom T. Hall and Waylon Jennings. In a Rolling Stone interview in 1970, Campbell — the model for the late Doug Marlette’s Rev. Will B. Dunn in the comic strip “Kudzu” — was a minister who did not attend church, made and drank whiskey, and whose vocabulary was peppered with robust but well-chosen expletives.

Few Mississippians of his generation had more courage in embracing the cause of civil rights or advocacy for the poor, the downtrodden

and the marginalized. His writings were brave and important and he was not afraid to be critical of organized religion. His ministry was to those who did not trust churches or the institutions that supported churches.

Here’s a suggestion. Find some recordings of Jerry Clower’s tales of the Ledbetters and share his lamentations on the life of poor rural God-fearing rednecks down in the Amite County of his childhood. Then read Campbell’s “Brother to a Dragonfly” or “Forty Acres and a Goat” along with “Providence” and “The Convention.”

Their politics were different. They came at their respective artistries from different philosophical points.

But the echoes of gnawing rural poverty, isolation, hopelessness and the sometimes blind faith that only God and hard labor offered any respite are so familiar.

Both men told marvelous stories, stories that flowed from the east fork of the Amite River.

Time to stop feeding the tiger?

As America grew in the 1800s from a republic of a few millions, whose frontier stopped at the Mississippi, into a world power, there were constant collisions with the world's greatest empire.

In 1812, we declared war on Britain, tried to invade Canada and got our Capitol burned. In 1818, Andrew Jackson, on an expedition into Spanish Florida to put down renegade Indians harassing Georgia, hanged two British subjects he had captured, creating a firestorm in Britain.

In 1838, we came close to war over Canada's border with Maine; in 1846, over Canada's border with the Oregon Territory.

After the Civil War, Fenians conducted forays into Canada to start a U.S.-British battle that might bring Ireland's independence. In 1895, we clashed over the border between Venezuela and British Guiana.

War was avoided on each occasion, save 1812. Yet all carried the possibility of military conflict between the world's rising power and its reigning power. Observing the pugnacity of 21st-century China, there appear to be parallels with the aggressiveness of 19th-century America.

China is now quarreling with India over borders. Beijing claims as her national territory the entire South and East China seas and all the islands, reefs and resources therein, dismissing the claims of half a dozen neighbors.

Beijing has bullied Japan and the Philippines and told the U.S. Navy to stay out of the Yellow Sea Pat and Taiwan Buchanan Strait.

In dealing Columnist with America, China has begun to exhibit an attitude that is at times contemptuous.

Here is a partial list of the targets of Chinese cyber-espionage: The Wall Street Journal. The New York Times. Bloomberg.

Google. Yahoo. Dow Chemical.

Lockheed Martin. Northrop Grumman. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Adm. Mike Mullen. Los Alamos and Oak Ridge nuclear-weapons labs.

The classified avionics of the F-35 fighter jet. The U.S. power grid.

U.S. computers are being hacked and secrets thieved, as Beijing steals the technology of our companies and manipulates her currency to minimize imports from the U.S.A. and maximize exports to the U.S.A. “The international community cannot tolerate such activity from any country,” says National Security Adviser Tom Donilon.

Yet the “international community” has been tolerating this activity for years.

No one wants a war with China, and provocative though

it is, China's conduct does not justify a war that would be a calamity for both nations. But China's behavior demands a reappraisal of our China policy over the past 20 years.

Consider what we have done for China. We granted her Most Favored Nation trade status, brought her into the World Trade Organization, threw open the world's largest market to Chinese goods, encouraged U.S. companies to site plants there and allowed China to run trillions of dollars in trade surpluses at our expense.

In 2012, China's trade surplus with the United States was over $300 billion, largest in history between any two nations.

What has China done with the wealth accumulated from those trade surpluses with the United States? How has she shown her gratitude?

She has used that wealth to lock up resources in Third World countries, build a worldclass military, confront America's friends in neighboring seas, engage in cyber-espionage, and thieve our national and corporate secrets. Is this the behavior of friends or partners?

And if the Chinese airily dismiss our protests, who can blame them?

For years they have engaged in cyber-espionage. They know we know it, and they have seen us back off calling them out.

For years we have threatened to charge them with currency manipulation, and for years we have backed off.

If they have concluded we are

more fearful of a confrontation than they, are they wrong? Other than fear or cowardice, what other explanation is there for our failure to stand up to China, when its behavior has been so egregious and insulting?

Does America fear facing down China because a political and economic collision with Beijing would entail an admission by the United States that our vision of a world of democratic nations all engaged in peaceful free trade under a rules-based regime was a willful act of self-delusion?

What China is about is as old as the history of man. She is a rising ethno-national state doing what such powers have always done: put their own interests ahead of all others, suppress ethnic minorities like Tibetans and Uighurs, and crush religious dissenters like Christians and Falun Gong.

There is no New World Order. Never was. The old demons — chauvinism and ethnonationalism — are not ancient history. They are not extinct.

They are with us forever. And America is not going to be able to deny reality much longer or put off facing up to what China is all about.

Given her current size and disposition, one day soon we are going to have to stop feeding the tiger. And start sanctioning it.

Chief: Santa Monica killings were planned SANTA MONICA, Calif.— Santa Monica’s police chief says the gunman who killed four people in a chaotic rampage planned the attack and had 1,300 rounds of ammunition.

Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks says the gunman who was killed by police had a rifle, a duffel bag full of ammunition magazines and extra weaponry.

She says the suspect had a run-in with police seven years ago, but she couldn’t comment further because he was a juvenile at the time.

She spoke near a display of weapons and ammo recovered from Santa Monica College where the killings ended when police fatally shot the gunman.

Seabrooks says police are probing the gunman’s connection to a house where the killings began a mile from campus. She would not identify the killer but said he would have turned 24 on Saturday.

Andrea breaks rainfall records NEW YORK — The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season smashed rainfall totals across the Northeast and pushed some streams and creeks over their banks but sped up the Eastern Seaboard without causing major damage.

A weakened Andrea shifted away from New England on Saturday morning with winds gusting up to 45 mph. The storm was expected to reach Canadian waters

by Sunday.

After bringing rain, strong winds and tornadoes to Florida, Andrea lost most of its tropical characteristics late Friday into Saturday. But it brought record rainfall for the date of June 7 for many cities and towns in the Northeast.

Andrea dumped 6.64 inches of rain on Gales Ferry, Conn. The 4.16 inches that fell on New York City’s Central Park was more than double the previous record for

the date, set in 1918.

The 3.5 inches of rain that fell at Philadelphia International Airport doubled the 1.79 inches that fell in 1904. Newark, N.J., saw 3.71 inches, breaking the previous mark of 1.11 inches set in 1931.

Elsewhere, cars were submerged in floodwaters on Long Island, and about 50 residents were displaced by a rising stream in Chester, Pa. A retaining wall collapsed early Saturday in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood, sending an avalanche of rubble sliding into an apartment building and leaving three families homeless. The storm was blamed for one traffic-related death in Virginia.

Late Friday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami discontinued all tropical storm warnings but cautioned about possible coastal and localized flooding from New Jersey to New England.

Officials in the Mid-Atlantic region and Northeast had prepared for it Friday night. New York City activated its flash flooding plan, and heavy rainfall resulted in flash floods, causing some sections of roadways to be closed throughout Long Island.

A number of roads were flooded in the Boston area. A flight that left Boston on Friday night headed to Palm Beach, Fla., was diverted to Newark Liberty International Airport after being struck by lightning. No one was injured.

Operator in collapse deaths turns self in PHILADELPHIA — A heavy equipment operator with a lengthy rap sheet accused of being high on marijuana when a downtown building collapsed onto a thrift store, killing six people, turned himself in on Saturday to face charges in the deaths, police said.

A warrant had been issued for the arrest of Sean Benschop on six counts of involuntary manslaughter, 13 counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of risking a catastrophe.

42-year-old Benschop had been using an excavator Wednesday when the remains of the fourstory building gave way and toppled onto an attached Salvation Army thrift store, killing two employees and four customers and injuring 13 others.

Deputy Mayor Everett Gillison told The Associated Press on Friday evening that a toxicology report showed evidence that Benschop was high on marijuana. That finding, combined with witness statements and evidence from the scene, led to the decision Friday to raid his North Philadelphia home and later seek an arrest warrant, he said.

Benschop didn’t return phone messages left at numbers listed in his name, though he told The Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday that he couldn’t comment because of the investigation.

Benschop, who also goes by the name Kary Roberts, has been arrested at least 11 times since 1994 on charges ranging from drugs to theft to weapons possession, according to court records. He was twice sentenced to prison in the 1990s after being convicted on drug trafficking charges. Benschop’s last arrest, on a charge of aggravated assault, came in January 2012, but the case was dismissed for lack of evidence.

As the criminal investigation heated up, at least two survivors sued the demolition contractor and building owner, alleging gross recklessness at the job site.

The city, meanwhile, promised to crack down on the demolition industry.

“We can do much better,” Mayor Michael Nutter said at a news conference Friday. “We will not accept the status quo in the face of this tragedy.”

Nutter’s reform plan for construction sites includes random drug testing on heavy equipment operators.

Sheriff complains about federal jail GULFPORT — Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara wants an end to federal oversight of his jail.

The U.S. Justice Department intervened 16 years ago because of complaints about overcrowding and understaffing at the lock-up.

Brisolara says those problems have been solved, but says federal officials keep making new demands.

Brisolara complained about the situation to the Harrison County Board of Supervisors in recent days, WLOX-TV reports.

“At 16 years of this, somebody is not doing their job,” he said. “This court decree should have never lasted this long. Either they aren’t doing theirs or we aren’t doing ours. And if it’s us, then they need to come down here and run it.”

The sheriff says more jail employees were hired, training programs expanded and inmate population lowered to comply with federal orders.

New doors and new locks were a big part of the $13 million in jail improvements in 2008.

“That was a major issue we had with the doors was the fact they were swing doors,” Brisolara said.

“So every door’s been changed to a slider, which is a lot safer for the inmates and correctional staff.”

The kitchen is also safer and Justice Department compliant.

“We replaced every bit of the cooking equipment down here,” the sheriff said.

“We completely took the floor out of this facility and replaced the floor in here to get it to comply with what justice wanted.”

He says new demands seek more mental health counselors and better treatment for inmates with AIDS.

Portera to help locals fill Yokohama jobs WEST POINT — Former University of Alabama Chancellor and Mississippi State University President Malcolm Portera begins work this month to ensure that locals get jobs at a tire plant being built in West Point, Miss.

The Commercial Dispatch says Portera’s new role will be to make sure that jobs at the Yokohama Tire Corporation are filled predominantly by people living in area.

He will work for Golden Triangle Development Link.

Yokohama is expected to begin operations in Mississippi in 2015. A memorandum of understanding between Mississippi and Yokohama requires the state to pay a penalty if Yokohama has to go outside the state to find qualified workers.

Link CEO Joe Max Higgins says Portera will work with programs at MSU and East Mississippi Community College to ensure there are qualified workers.

Some of the recruits will be engineers and accountants, Higgins said.

Portera is credited as being a key figure in luring a Nissan automobile manufacturing plant to Canton and a Mercedes Benz plant to Alabama.

A Clay County native, Portera led MSU from 1998-2001 before becoming UA Chancellor, where he served in that role until his retirement last year.

Detention hearing set in pipe bomb case LEAKESVILLE — A detention hearing has been scheduled June 19 for man arrested after authorities found a bomb in a car at a state prison in Leakesville.

Federal court papers show John Harberson of Carriere was one of three people arrested after officers at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution

found a pipe bomb in a vehicle Saturday.

Harberson is charged in U.S. District Court in Gulfport with manufacturing a destructive device.

Authorities say Harberson told agents he and another suspect built the pipe bomb Friday from aluminum flashlight bodies, shotgun shells, black powder and candle wax.

Authorities don’t believe the bomb was intended for the prison.

Harberson said he forgot the new bomb was in the car when he went to the prison for a visit.

Sean K. Smith, director of the Corrections Investigation Division of the Mississippi Department of Corrections has said the device was found during a routine search of the visitors’ vehicle at the secure entrance gate.

He has said authorities don’t believe the inmate he was going to visit had any knowledge of the bomb.

Officials again close floodgate VICKSBURG — A Mississippi floodgate is closing again because water levels are rising on the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is closing the Steele Bayou floodgate north of Vicksburg after opening it May 29.

Corps officials expect the gate to stay closed two to three weeks, if no rain falls along the Yazoo River backwater area that the structure protects.

When closed, the gate blocks water from the Mississippi River from overflowing into the southern Delta region, including Issaquena, Sharkey and Washington counties. But it also blocks water from the Big Sunflower and Little Sunflower rivers, Steele Bayou and Deer Creek from draining out.

During the 10 days the gate was opened, officials say water drained from 120,000 acres of land that flooded during the earlier closure.

Funeral services for John H. Cate II, 45, of Corinth, are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Victory Baptist Church.

Mr. Cate died Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was born July 17, 1967.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edgar and Nellie Burrell and Pal McKee; his uncle, Ronnie Burrell; his uncle in law, Herbert Morris (Quay); and one sister-in-law, Debbie Morris.

He was a member of Pleasa n t Grove Church Austin o f Christ, where he served as a song leader. He was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War and served from April 1969 to March 1980. He was formerly employed at Plumrose in Booneville and was currently employed at Cater-

State creating Indian mounds trail JACKSON — Tourists will soon be able to follow a driving trail of Mississippi’s Indian mounds.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has received an $800,000 grant to put up historical markers and create road pulloffs. The trail is envisioned to run 350 miles from Wilkinson County to DeSoto County. Among the trail’s major sites will be the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians in Natchez and Winterville Mounds State Park north of Greenville.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is surveying information on 45 mounds and making limited excavations of a smaller number whose character isn’t well understood.

A tour brochure and smartphone application are planned. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and several other tribes are working with the project.

Officials hope to complete the trail by fall 2014.

No new hearing in murder case JACKSON — The Mississippi Supreme Court

has declined to have a rehearing about the life sentence given Marcus O’Neal Flowers in the 2008 shooting death of a Decatur man.

Flowers was convicted of murder in Newton County in 2009. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Prosecutors say the body of Charles Wash was found in the Lawrence community just off Interstate 20 near a mobile home. Authorities say Wash had just dropped off a co-worker when he was shot while in his truck.

Flowers argued there were conflicts in evidence and questioned the credibility of the prosecution’s main witness.

The Supreme Court upheld the conviction and sentence in January. On Thursday, the court rejected a motion for a rehearing.

Mayor, police chief feuding in Gloster GLOSTER — The court case is over and the town elections are done, but Mayor Billy Johnson and Police Chief Danny Meaux continue to be at odds.

At the town’s board meeting this past week, Johnson criticized Meaux for rarely showing up to work since a judge ordered him reinstated as chief in March.

In turn, Meaux claimed the mayor has a grudge against him because Meaux arrested his son last year.

The Enterprise-Journal reported (http://bit. ly/15T0OJo) Meaux sued the town last year after Johnson twice vetoed his promotion to chief.

This past March an Amite County Circuit Court judge said the vetoes were invalid and ordered the town to reinstate Meaux with a year’s back salary.

“The whole issue is that I arrested his son.

It was a personal issue,” Meaux said.

In February 2012, Andrea Johnson, 31, was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.

Mayor Johnson said he didn’t know Meaux was involved in the arrest.

He did know Gloster police officer Terry Boss was, yet Johnson supported Boss for police chief instead of Meaux.

“If my son breaks the law, arrest him,” Johnson said. “I’ve never had a grudge against anybody that arrests my son or anything. That’s not the first time my son has been arrested. That happened before and I didn’t have any grudge against them. Those

people have a job to do and they’re going to do it.”

As for not showing up to work, Meaux said, “I’m burning time up that was given back to me in the court order.

It should run out right around July 1st.”

Longtime fisheries director retiring JACKSON — The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks says longtime Fisheries Bureau Director Ron Garavelli is retiring June 30.

A news release says Garavelli will retire after more than 39 years in natural resource conservation.

Garavelli started his career with MDWFP in 1977 as a fisheries biologist. He became director of fisheries in 1985.

He is credited with the beginning of the agency’s youth fishing rodeo program and was involved with design and development of the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery and Visitor Education Center at Enid Lake.

The agency says Larry Pugh will replace Garavelli as fisheries director.

Pugh brings 15 years of administrative and fisheries management experience to the position.

Obama, Xi in 2nd day of talks RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — With a stroll under the California desert sun, President Barack Obama and Chinese leader Xi Jinping opened a second day of talks at a “get to know you” summit featuring a highstakes agenda.

Obama described the talks as “terrific” as he and Xi walked side by side Saturday through the manicured gardens of the sprawling Sunnylands estate. In the spirit of the informal atmosphere at the meetings, the men went without jackets and ties.

The presidents rejoined advisers for a session expected to focus on economic issues, along with additional discussions on North Korea and cybersecurity. The White House said after a twohour bilateral meeting, the presidents ended their visit by having tea with Xi’s wife and the wife of the Chinese ambassador for about half an hour. The White House said in a statement shortly after Xi departed the sprawling estate that the two nations agreed to work together for the first time to reduce hydrofluorocarbons, a potent greenhouse gas. It is commonly used as a coolant in refrigerators, air conditioners, hair spray and other household items, along with industrial applications.

At a news conference Friday night, Obama said the United States and China were in “uncharted waters” regarding computer security.

The presidents carefully avoided accusing each other’s nation of hightech intrusions, but acknowledged an urgent need to find a common approach on addressing the matter.

“We don’t have the kind of protocols that have governed military issues and arms issues, where nations have a lot of experience in trying to negotiate what’s acceptable and what’s not,” Obama said.

Obama also sought to distinguish between China’s alleged cyberspying and his own government’s monitoring of U.S. phone and Internet records. He insisted the two issues were separate and distinct, and that concerns over hacking and intellectual property theft shouldn’t be confused with the debate over how governments collect data to combat terrorist threats.

“That’s a conversation that I welcome,” he said.

He said China was also a victim of cyberspying but did not assign any blame.

Exhibit details JFK’s last days on Cape Cod HYANNIS, Mass. — A new museum exhibit tells the story of President John F. Kennedy’s last visits to Cape Cod in the months before his assassination.

Officials at John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum say the exhibit includes videos, photos and news clips that look back on the final days of the president’s administration through a Cape Cod lens.

Museum Development Director John Allen says visitors will see images including JFK swimming with his children and the president kissing his father’s head on the family’s porch.

He says the exhibit also strives to capture the family’s grief after the death of the president and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s newborn son, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, in August 1963.

Nuclear plant industry struggles LOS ANGELES — The decision to close California’s San Onofre nuclear plant is the latest setback for an industry that seemed poised for growth not long ago.

In Wisconsin, a utility shuttered its plant last month after it couldn’t find a buyer. In Florida — and now California — utilities decided it was cheaper to close plants rather than spend big money fixing them and risk the uncertainty of safety reviews.

Meanwhile, the low cost of natural gas is discouraging utilizes from spending billions of dollars and lots of time to build nuclear reactors.

New technology allows drillers to extract more gas within the U.S., increasing the supply and pushing down prices.

In states were utilities operate as monopolies, they are reluctant to ask their regulators for permission to build enormously expensive nuclear plants — or even fix old ones — when it so cheap to build gas-fired plants.

In places where utilities sell power into the open market, the low prices don’t offset the financial risk of building expensive and time-consuming nuclear plants.

“The world has changed with natural gas prices being so low and so much gas being available for so long,” said Mike Haggarty, a senior utility analyst for Moody’s Investor Service.

The Ramer war party strikes again We’d just crossed the dam at the west end of the pond on our evening walk a few weeks ago when our skinny, flopeared, somewhat flaky Doberman turned into Saber the Fearless, Saber the Swift.

The dogs had run ahead of us, of course, and as we rounded the bend, I saw Saber doing some sort of odd dog dance. As my bemused eyes adjusted to the scene, I realized he’d grabbed a snake -- a big’un -- by its middle and was vigorously giving it a shake.

The snake was flailing, its white underbelly apparent. So was the diamond pattern on its back. And the muscular thickness of its body. Not to mention the wedgeshaped head. Yes, I was pretty certain. My silly dog had grabbed himself a cottonmouth. Some

folks call them water moccasins. By any name, they are poisonous Ryland pit vipers.

Bruhwiler I belin Columnist lowed my deepest, fiercest voice: “Leave it! Leave it, Saber!”

I’ve yelled at all our dogs so often over the years to “leave it!” (as in “drop it!”) that they know I mean it, and they’ve had lots of practice dropping those rotting squirrels or bloody, jagged bones Right Away.

Otherwise, they know I’ll come bearing down -running after them the length of a field if need be -- pulling a plastic bag out of my pocket if I have one or just using my bare hands to force their jaws

open and make them spit those disgusting tidbits out! now!

When they’re puppies, they keep on chewing fast and hard until I grab them. Saber, however, not only dropped the snake but -- at my continuing to holler -backed away and trotted on down the path with hardly a glance behind.

So did the Labradors, who, of course, had rushed right up to check out the excitement, their necks extended, sniffing hard.

I sighed a big phewww of relief.

Unfortunately, my husband is not as well trained. There he remained, fascinated, bent toward Mr. Snake, who hissed and leapt in John’s direction. He’d have chomped on him if he could, but John was standing just out of strik-

ing range. Snake coiled up, rather awkwardly it seemed to me, but stood his ground, head raised, cobra-style, the way cottonmouths are known to do, and continued to hiss, his fanged mouth wide open. It had been a cold spring, and I’m guessing he’d come out of hibernation in the recent past, perhaps that very afternoon as the day warmed up, and was still a bit sluggish. Saber had been lucky.

He’d probably also been injured by the Dobe.

I have no idea how badly.

My main concern was to catch up with Saber and check him out, which we did as soon as John could tear himself away from Snake. No bloody holes anywhere in Saber’s skin that we could see. And next morning no body part was swollen.

So all’s well that ends

But that is the surefired way to tell most poisonous snakes from their cousins. Saber’s adversary might have merely been a banded water snake. They’re known for their bad tempers, but they’re not poisonous.

Unfortunately, they look a lot like water moccasins, so folks tend to kill them on sight.

Next time I’ll squat down beside John and peer into the critter’s eyes. Nice and round like beady black marbles, no problem. But if they have those slitted pupils — like cats’ eyes — I’ll back off fast.

And drag my husband with me.

Postscript: Next day I emailed an account of Saber’s half-a-minute’s heroic battle to the family. My brother replied: “Yeah, he probably was waking up from a long winter’s nap. Hope he/ she’s okay and the Ramer war party came out okay. (Did you get a good look at its pupils?)”

“The Ramer war party.” That’s hilarious. But “get a good look at its pupils?”

Well, little brother, that thing was so dang big and having such a hissy fit, I forgot to check his eyeballs out.

I just wanted to get my dogs out of his range.

We weren’t going to kill him, poisonous or not.

He’s out there doing his job, catching rodents and other riffraff of the field and stream.

Book follows Nashville life of Waylon, Willie, Kris

You wanted to turn around and listen to it again. Was the singer following you around? Did the writer peek into your heart? Because every word, every note exactly mirrored how you felt, the hurts you lived, the struggle you endured.

To get that feeling, you just know that the songwriter had to go through that same pain. And in the new book “Outlaw: Waylon, Willie, Kris, and the Renegades of Nashville”

by Michael Streissguth, you’ll see that each struggle was worth it.

Music executives and critics visiting Nashville in the 1960s were nothing but critical: the city had a ban on booze sold by the glass, rock & roll shows were attended by police, hillbillies were everywhere and so was segregation – though Nashville did have

Willie Nelson came to Nashville in 1960 after ten years of odd jobs and Texas honky-tonks. He was a clean-cut kind of guy then, and had some success as a songwriter for many major acts, but he wanted to record his own music. He first signed on with Monument Records, but when production slowed more than to his liking, he left

Monument and signed on with Chet Atkins and RCA – and fumbled.

Not long after Willie soft-landed onto the Nashville scene, Waylon Jennings came to Nashville against Willie’s advice. Though Willie told Waylon that the city would break his heart, Waylon quickly landed a gig at a club and was “king” in short order. He had a good reputation for music, money – and pills. He also had a stubborn streak, much to Chet Atkins’ chagrin when Waylon signed on at RCA. In the summer of ‘65, Captain Kris Kristofferson, on his way to teach British literature at West Point, stopped at Nashville to meet with a music publisher. Captain Kristofferson grew up in Brownsville, Texas, listening to the Grand Ole Opry show and dreaming of joining Hank Williams onstage. He wrote songs like Hank, from college to his Rhodes Scholar days, to

his stint with the military.

A few days after arriving in town, he resigned his commission at West Point.

Willie left Nashville for Texas, but returned. Waylon married Jessi and reluctantly gained some Angels as bodyguards. Kris found Hollywood. And Chet Atkins had to step aside for the outlaw path…

I was torn about this book.

On one hand, “Outlaw” is filled with all kinds of names that only the biggest fans will recognize.

Yes, the musicians you loved are mentioned in this book, but so are a lot of minor players from thirty and forty years ago.

And yet, I liked this book. Author Michael Streissguth shares tidbits, tales, and telling facts about the three main Outlaws who started a revolution and changed an American institution.

Public education is a profession of the heart as well as the head.

But because it has become so “head heavy,� many educators are losing some of the love of their profession.

There are literally thousands of energetic and dedicated educators in Mississippi. But, unfortunately, there are too many educators who are saying things like “I just don’t have the heart for it anymore,� or “I’m going to put my time in and get out as soon as I can.�

Unfortunately, many of these statements have come from some of the most outstanding school administrators and teachers. There are more educators with advanced degrees in the public schools from ever before. Do these degrees automatically make them more effective in their respective position? Everyone knows the answer to that question.

Am I knocking advanced college degrees?

Definitely not! I have two of them, and I don’t plan to give them back.

A college degree is simply “a ticket for the privilege of serving children,� and the worth of educators is determined by the service they render. But to serve in today’s challenging public school environments, it takes a lot of heart (compassion, courage, confidence and commitment) to go along with the head (knowledge and skills.)

While serving as Chairman of the Educational Leadership Department at Auburn University at Montgomery for 13 years, several hundred educators received their A and

AA Educational Leadership Certificates.

However, those who have made the greatest contributions to public education in Alabama were not only academically successful, they also possessed the hearts characteristics of outstanding school leaders.

In 1982, social forecaster John Naisbitt wrote the book, Megatrends: Ten Directions to Transforming Our Lives. In chapter two, entitled “From Force Technology to High Tech/ High Touch,� Dr. Naisbitt wrote: “High Tech/High Touch is a formula I use to describe the way we have responded to technology. Whenever new technology is introduced in society, there must be counter-balancing human responses – that is High Touch – or the technology is rejected. The more high tech, the more high touch.� “The greatest lesson we must learn from the principle of high tech/high

touch is a modern version of the Greek ideal – Balance.�

The public schools are out of balance!

There’s no profession that has more “forced technology� than public education.

Schools have been bombarded with “rapid-fire� changes, and they are beginning to take their toll. With the increasing amount of paper requirements resulting from very questionable mandated federal and state policies and procedures, even the most competent educators can develop an attitude of feeling “out of control.�

And when attitudes deteriorate; commitment, loyalty and, most importantly, performance will also deteriorate.

What kind of money saver are you?

Many believe low-and moderate-income families cannot afford to save and build wealth.

Yet research shows there are “savers� and “spenders� in all income classes. While those with modest incomes cannot save as much as the affluent, almost all have the ability to build wealth over time. 4. Outside of work — save monthly through an automatic transfer from

checking to savings. Savings such as these will provide funds for emergencies, home purchase, school tuition or even retirement. Almost all banking institutions will automatically transfer funds monthly from your checking account to a savings account if you request it. The old saying, “What you don’t see, you probably won’t miss.� is true.

Economy adds jobs, jobless rate climbs Associated Press

WASHINGTON — More Americans hunted for jobs in May, and more companies filled them — signs of confidence and resilience for the slowhealing U.S. economy.

The 175,000 jobs employers added last month were the latest evidence that the economy could be poised for stronger growth in coming months despite tax increases and government spending cuts.

The unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent from 7.5 percent in April, the Labor Department said Friday. But that increase was only because more people began looking for work, a healthy sign.

About three-quarters of them found jobs.

Investors seemed pleased that the report hit a sweet spot: The job growth showed the U.S. economy’s sturdiness.

Yet the gain was modest enough that many analysts think the Federal Reserve will continue making bond purchases intended to stimulate growth for at least several more months. The purchases have eased longterm loan rates and lifted stock prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average surged more than 200 points. “Job growth is still a bit weaker than desired,� said Russell Price, an economist at Ameriprise Financial. But the steadiness of the job gains “is a testament to the economy’s much improved underlying fundamentals.�

The housing market is strengthening, auto sales

are up and consumer confidence has reached a fiveyear peak. Stock prices are near record highs, and the budget deficit has shrunk.

The American economy’s relative strength contrasts with Europe, which is gripped by recession, and Asia, where once-explosive economies are now struggling.

U.S. employers have added an average of 155,000 jobs in the past three months. But the May gain almost exactly matched the average increase of the previous 12 months: 172,000.

Reflecting a recent trend, many of the jobs added in May were lowerpaying ones, which aren’t likely to fuel as much consumer spending and economic growth as higher-paying jobs that have disappeared.

Yet many Americans appear more optimistic about their job prospects: 420,000 people started looking for work in May. As a result, the percentage of Americans 16 and older either working or looking for work rose to 63.4 percent from a 34-year low of 63.3 percent in April.

This is called the labor force participation rate.

Higher participation can raise the unemployment rate. That’s because once people without a job start looking for one, they’re counted as unemployed.

Labor force participation has been falling since peaking at 67.3 percent in 2000. That’s partly the result of baby boomers retiring and dropping out of the workforce.

Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist at

Deutsche Bank Securities, thinks an improving job market will lead more Americans to seek jobs.

He predicts that the participation rate will level off around 63.5 percent.

The unemployment rate is derived from a survey of households, which found that more people started looking for work in May. Because some didn’t find jobs right away, the number of unemployed rose 101,000 to 11.7 million.

The job gain for the month is calculated from a separate survey of employers.

Some signs in the report suggested that the federal government’s deep spending cuts in domestic and defense programs and scant growth in much of the rest of the world are weighing on the U.S. job market. Weakness over-

seas has slowed demand for U.S. exports.

Manufacturers cut 8,000 jobs. The federal government shed 14,000.

Both were the third straight month of cuts for those industries. Over the past three months, the federal government has cut 45,000 jobs.

The number of temporary jobs rose by about 26,000. The economy has added temporary jobs for eight straight months, suggesting that employers are responding to more demand but aren’t confident enough to hire permanent workers.

Industries that rely directly on consumer spending hired at a healthy pace — a sign of confidence that consumers will keep spending. Retailers added 28,000 jobs. Restaurants added 38,000.

Family fumes at dad who helps himself to buffet DEAR ABBY: I host all of the holiday parties and dinner parties for my family. Whenever I have my parents over, my father insists on helping himself to the top layer of every casserole. He’ll scrape all the cheese off the potatoes, the crunchy onion topping off the green bean casserole, etc., leaving just the bare vegetables for everyone else.

I have asked Dad not to do it because it is inconsiderate of the other guests. I can see people are bothered by it, so now they make a beeline to the buffet so they can beat him to it. Dad got offended when I talked to him about it, but he continues to do it. Mom refuses to get involved, and I have said all I can say. Because your father refuses to change his behavior, I will offer a few suggestions: The first is to alter your menu to avoid serving casserole dishes. DEAR ABBY: Over the past few years, as social media has become more popular, I have noticed a trend among many people.

They now favor that form of communication over personal human

wither. If this has been going on for an extended period, then it’s time you give your girlfriend a wake-up call: You feel abandoned. By spending more time in the virtual world than in the real one, she is neglecting her relationship with you. Ask her if she would be willing to work on a compromise so that she spends time with you. Lady Warriors take honors

The University of North Alabama will host a Hitting Camp on June 10-11 at Mike Lane Field. Cost for camp is $120 without lunch or $130 with lunch included.

The two-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on June 10 and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday.

Campers can register online at UNABaseball.com or register from 8:30 to 9 a.m. June 10 at the field.

CHS Volleyball Camp Corinth High School will host their 4th Annual Basic Skills Volleyball Camp on June 10 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and 11 (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) in the high school gym.

Kids ages 6-12 from any school are eligible for the camp, which will teach basic skills such as serving and blocking. Children who wish to improve on these skills are welcome to attend. Registration is limited to the first $100 students, and all campers must pre-register

by June 3. Cost is $35 per camper and includes a camp t-shirt.

Campers will provide their own lunch on June 10, and an exhibition game for parents and guests will close camp on June 11.

Biggersville Basketball Camp The 1A State Champion Biggersville Lions will be hosting two basketball camps June 11-14. Camps times are 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for boys and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for girls and any child entering grades 1-8 are eligible.

Arizona takes ASU’s Hahn

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have used a 34th-round draft pick on Arizona State outfielder Cory Hahn, who was paralyzed during a game in 2011.

Hahn was paralyzed from the chest down after sliding head-first while trying to steal a base against New Mexico on Feb. 20, 2011.

A freshman playing his third college game, Hahn suffered a neck injury when he collided with Lobos second baseman Kyle Stiner’s knee.

Hahn was taken off on a stretcher and had surgery later that night.

He has spent the past two years helping with Arizona State’s program.

Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall said he hopes to make Hahn a permanent employee within the organization.

After closing their season one game shy of a state championship series, Corinth High Schools fast-pitch team still have earned a few distinctions.

Former center-fielder Portia Patterson, who graduated and will suit up for ICC this fall, and incoming CHS freshman Colby Cox have been named to the 4A All-State Fast-Pitch team.

Patterson also finishes the year as the Co-Player of the Year in Division 1-4A, sharing the distinction with Kaitlyn Alexander of Pontotoc.

Patterson finished the season with a .330 batting average, four home runs, and 33 RBI’s with 36 runs scored.

Patterson also charted four triples and eight doubles and started for the Warriors in all 32 games.

Cox, who stepped in mid-season to replace an injured Stennett Smith, ended her season with a 14-4 pitching record, a 2.22 ERA, and 73 strikeouts.

In the batters box, Cox earned a .333 batting average, including 2 home runs and 13 RBIs. Despite a season-ending injury, Smith finishes her high school career at the 1-4A Pitcher of the Year.

Smith leads the team with a .484 batting average in 20 game appearances including 20 RBIs and three home runs.

On the mound, Smith carries an 11-3 record with 98 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA. All three Warriors were named to the Division 1-4A First Team along with Haley Christian, Bailee Kramer, and Rebekah Williams.

Anna Kayte Webb was given an honorable mention for her work behind the plate, where she ranks second on the team with a .357 batting average and seven RBIs. Christian, with a .275 batting average, finishes her high school career with 25 assists and 167 put outs as the Warriors catcher.

Kramer, working at second base, is credited with eight double plays and a .354 batting average which includes three home runs and a tie for most RBIs at 33 with Patterson.

As a rising junior, Williams logged 22 put outs in 25 chances in left field with a .250 batting average, three home runs and 22 RBIs. In addition to its six First Team players, the Corinth coaching staff of Head Coach Janna LaBarreare and assistants Cat Liddon and Gregg Parker.

LaBarreare will also receive the Mississippi Association of Coaches Slow-Pitch Coach of the Year award for leading the Lady Warriors to the first 4A Slow-Pitch Championship Title in school history.

The Warriors finished the slow-pitch season 26-7 and the fast-pitch season at 25-7.

LaBarreare and most of her recent graduates will play one more game together on June 13 at South Pontotoc

Due to injury, Smith will not participate in the seniors-only game.

First pitch for all games will be determined later this week.

Mississippi State gets 20 hits, beats Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Adam Frazier didn’t want to go into Mississippi State’s super regional against Virginia wondering where he’d be drafted.

The Pittsburgh Pirates took care of that on Friday, taking Frazier in the sixth round with the 179th overall selection, and a relieved Frazier gave Pirates fans a show on Saturday in leading the Bulldogs to an 11-6 victory against the Cavaliers.

“Any time you get some stuff off your mind and some pressure off of you, it’s always more relaxing,”

Frazier said after going 6-for-6 with three singles, two doubles, a triple and three runs batted in to pace the Bulldogs’ 20-hit attack.

Frazier said it was the first six-hit game he could remember, even thinking back to Little League.

Hunter Renfroe, the No. 13 overall pick by the San Diego Padres, went 4-for-5, also with three RBIs. “I think we’re seeing the ball great right now, laying off bad pitches, not striking out a lot,” Renfroe said.

The Bulldogs (47-18) sure looked it, pounded Virginia pitching and scoring in six innings. They also benefited from uncharacteristic

sloppiness by the Cavaliers, who made four errors that led to six unearned runs.

“We’ve just got to be better tomorrow,” coach Brian O’Connor said. “We’ve got to be better at executing our pitches. We’ve got to be better at handling the ball, the things we’ve done all year.”

Virginia (50-11) had 11 hits, but also hit into four rally-killing double plays.

“We just lacked that clutch hit today,” shortstop Nick Howard, who was 2-for-4, said.

Kendall Graveman (7-5) went 5 1-3 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing nine hits and all six runs, just four of them earned. He struck out

three and walked two. Ross Mitchell finished, allowing just two hits and three walks in 3 2-3 innings.

Staked quickly to a 2-0 lead, Graveman gave up three runs in the bottom of the first, but saw the Bulldogs come back with two more in the fourth and three in the fifth as the hits just kept falling. Wes Rea and Demarcus Henderson each added three hits for Mississippi State, and five players scored two runs each.

Rookie Shawn Stefani shoots 66 to lead at St. Jude

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Rookie Shawn Stefani has been through enough scrambling around the mini-tours trying to make it to the PGA Tour that a quadruple bogey wasn’t going to shake his confidence or his concentration.

Even if it cost him the lead.

Stefani overcame the bad hole that dropped him down Saturday and shot a 4-under 66 to take the third-round lead in the St. Jude Classic.

“I feel like I hit one bad shot on 11, and that was the putt that I missed for a triple,” Stefani said showing

off his sense of humor. “I know that sounds crazy, but you know I hit the club that I wanted to hit. Unfortunately, was the wrong club at the wrong time.”

The 31-year-old Texan rebounded with four birdies over his final five holes to move back atop the leaderboard. He finished with eight birdies to go with that quadruple bogey to reach 12-under 198 at TPC Southwind.

“It’s who gets over it fastest and who moves on the fastest,” Stefani said. “And to finish the way I did with three birdies on the last three was great. But I was just out there just playing the game and having fun.

That’s what I’m here for is to play the best I can and have fun with it, and I did that today.”

Harris English was a stroke back after a 69, finishing out of the lead for the first time this week. He sounded happy it wasn’t worse after playing with Stefani.

“Shawn played so good on the front side, he birdied 10 I thought this guy’s going to shoot 60,” English said.

Thirteen players shot at least 4 under on a day with easier pins on the small, firm greens and very little wind.

Scott Stallings, Patrick Reed and Nicholas Thompson were 8 under. Stallings

had a 67, Reed shot 64, and Thompson had a 66.

Phil Mickelson was another stroke back after a 65 with his best round yet after not playing the previous three weeks. His day could have been even better if not for three bogeys along with six birdies and an eagle.

Mickelson said he needs to be a little bit sharper with each swing.

“There were a couple of tee shots that didn’t catch the fairway,” he said. “I’ve got to get that ball in the fairway. And I did a better job of it today and consequently I was able to make a lot of birdies because I Please see GOLF | 11A

Brandon Waddell (6-3) lasted just 3 1-3 for the Cavaliers, allowing six hits and six runs, three earned. The Cavaliers, whose dominant pitching and nearly flawless defense carried them to a sweep in the regional round, used five pitchers, all freshmen, and gave up a season high for hits.

In the final innings, with Virginia’s threats continually being erased, the contingent of maroon-clad Bulldogs fans began celebrating with chants and cheers, turning the finish into a virtual home atmosphere.

Pins will be in tougher locations Sunday, and Mickelson said any wind could create the potential for the leaders to shoot over par. Only Stallings has won on tour among the players ahead of Mickelson, who has 41 career wins with four majors as he tunes up his game for the U.S. Open next week at Merion.

“I feel like I’m playing well enough where I can go out and shoot a low round tomorrow,” Mickelson said.

“I expect the course to play different tomorrow than it did today. Today was set up for moving day. The tees were up, the pins were in easy spots, no wind. ... I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s final round.”

This is just the 17th career tour event for Stefani, who earned his way onto the PGA Tour by finishing sixth on the Web.com Tour money list in 2012 in a two-time win season.

He played the U.S. Open in 2009 at Bethpage, missing the cut. In March, he had the lead after the first and second rounds at the Tampa Bay Championship before tying for seventh in his best finish yet.

“I’m much more prepared with my game than I was then, and I’m feeling a lot more comfortable with it,” Stefani said. “It’s been a tough year for me. I’ve stayed patient with it and tried to keep going and focusing on all the things I usually do. But it’s tough.”

Stefani went off in the final group with English, who had a share of the lead after 18 and had the lead to himself after 36 holes.

English opened strong with two birdies in his first three holes to become the first to get to 12 under here this week. But the 23-year-old English bogeyed Nos. 5 and 8 with his playing partner getting his third birdie on No. 9 to take the lead to himself.

Stefani hit his approach on the par 4 to 7 feet to set up the birdie, helping him make the turn at 11 under.

He then birdied No. 10 rolling in a 12-footer to go to 12 under with a two-stroke lead over English.

Then the rookie ran into trouble on the island green of the par-3 No. 11.

Stefani went with a wedge and said a gust of wind caught it in the air, sending it into the water short of the island green.

He took his drop and then hit into the back bunker where he had a buried lie. He got the ball out but didn’t clear the slope, so the ball rolled back into the bunker.

He pushed an 8-footer past the hole 4 feet before finally salvaging a quadruple bogey.

But Stefani birdied No. 14 and got a big par save on No. 15 after his tee shot rolled into the water near the green. He took a drop, then chipped in from 49 feet to avoid dropping another stroke and stay within a shot of English with a big smile of relief.

Stefani finished with a 3-footer for birdie on No. 16, a 17-footer for birdie on No. 17 and capped his round with an 8-footer on No. 18 just after English made a 14-footer to move back into the lead for a few moments English had plenty of luck himself.

On the par-4 12th, his approach to the green went left and bounced off the top of a grandstand and hit off a woman before rolling into a greenside bunker. English saved par by hitting his shot within a foot of the hole to stay at 10 under.

Helms, Louisville top Vanderbilt 5-3 Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — When Louisville coach Dan McDonnell leaves his office two hours after a practice or game, he often notices a light on in the batting cages.

And usually swinging away is seldom used senior outfielder Matt Helms.

“This guy works,” McDonnell said. “I always tell these guys that the bus pulls up at everybody’s stop. You’ve got to be ready to get on it. I had no doubt Matt was going to get on it.”

The extra practice paid dividends on Saturday as Helms delivered a two-out, two-run pinchhit single in the seventh inning to lift Louisville to a 5-3 victory over No. 2 overall seed Vanderbilt in a NCAA super regional opener.

In just his 41st at-bat of the season, Helms drove 1-2 pitch off Commodore closer Brian Miller down the third-base line to break a 2-2 tie. The left-handed hitter had driven in just three runs all season.

As he raced toward first base, Helms pointed to the crowd where his parents were sitting after making the nearly nine-hour drive from Oklahoma.

“It was huge,” Helms said.

“Just a big relief, big excitement.

You work so hard for something and you finally get a chance to prove to the team you can do something. But it was huge just having (his parents) there and enjoying that success for me.”

Helms’ single was part of a three-run inning that rallied Louisville (50-12) to a win in the opener of a best-of-three series.

The Cardinals, playing in their first super regional since 2009, tied a program-record for singleseason wins and need just one win to reach their second College World Series.

“It is great to get that first win where your back is not against

the wall but you’re still going to be aggressive to go get game two,” Helms said.

Vanderbilt (54-11), playing in its third super regional in four years, had just lost once in 49 previous games when leading after six innings.

Left-handed ace Kevin Ziomek (11-3) was cruising through six innings, allowing just two hits and one run. He had retired 11 of 12 before entering the seventh.

Then he ran into trouble.

“Our demise was that seventh inning,” Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. “We just couldn’t get out of it.”

Trailing 2-1, Jeff Gardner led off with a single and moved to third on two groundouts. Ziomek then surrendered a two-out single through the left side to Zak Wasserman, who drove in Gardner for the second time in the game. Sutton Whiting followed with a single the opposite way leadoff hitter walked Adam Engel to load the bases.

“They grinded through some at-bats,” Ziomek said. “I made a couple pitches but they put some good swings on the ball and they fell when they needed to.”

Corbin then pulled Ziomek in favor for Miller, Vanderbilt’s single-season saves leader with 16. Corbin said freshman righthander Carson Fulmer was unavailable after hurting his eye before the game when a stretching band snapped off his foot and hit him in the eye.

In came Helms for his first at-bat since May 23. The lefthanded hitter was pinch-hitting for second baseman Zach Lucas, who took over for injured Nick Ratajczak in the fourth inning.

Miller quickly threw two strikes.

But on the fourth pitch, Helms poked a hit past Turner at third for the third opposite field hit of the inning.

“I wasn’t looking to strike out. I was looking to put a bat on the ball,” Helms said. “The turf was fast so I was looking to hit something hard. He put another one in there and I just went with it and took it the other way, which worked out.”

Louisville tacked on a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Shane Crain.

Vanderbilt got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a fielding error. But the Commodores stranded five runners in the last two innings.

After Chad Green scattered six hits and allowed two runs in five innings, the Cardinals turned to three relievers. Dace Kime (6-1), Cody Ege and Nick Burdi allowed just one hit and one unearned run in the final four innings. At one point, Louisville retired 12 of 13 Vanderbilt batters.

“Tough ball game for us,” Corbin said. “But we put ourselves in a position to win it at the end, the last couple of innings. We just didn’t get the big hit.”

Freshman Xavier Turner had two hits and scored two runs for the Commodores. Six of Vanderbilt’s seven hits came in the opening three innings.

Turner manufactured two early runs for Vanderbilt, which is playing in its third super regional in four years.

The freshman singled stole second and advanced to third on an out in both the first and third innings. In the first, he scored on a two-out single

After Wasserman drove in Gardner with a sacrifice fly in the second, Turner put Vanderbilt back in front.

‘PASSIONS’ CONTINUED FROM 1A

“Passions bring about emotions, fulfillment and satisfaction when engaged in a particular endeavor,” writes Avery in a statement at the exhibit.

As a visitor was reading the Passions statement while Avery was hanging the 20 by 24 mounted photos, the photographer asked, “what’s the difference between a passion and a hobby?”

The visitor wasn’t sure.

“Longevity,” Avery answered.

The photographer has been working on the exhibit for months. Fellow local photographer Lisa Lambert -- who has worked with Avery on several photo exhibits -- also has photos in the exhibit.

The idea for the exhibit came about last year when Avery and Lambert were planning a library exhibit to honor longtime funeral director Bill McPeters for his 90th birthday. McPeters was badly burned in an accident and passed away before his birthday, but an idea was born.

session and the work gathering stories, it dawned on me that Bill had a passion for lavish suits, clothes, hats, ties and boots,” explained Avery. “He also had a passion for people.”

“At that point I realized my passion at this stage in my life was photography,” he added. “I then began to wonder how many others had similar passions for other endeavors -- thus the idea for a passions’ exhibit.”

He first thought of Kenneth Williams and his love for running and John Smillie and his long history with baseball.

“It started with those guys and from there I want to other sports,” said Avery. “I went to other forms of fun things to do. At some point I realized the difference between a hobby and a passion is the amount of time devoted to a particular hobby really identifies it as a passion.”

Avery wanted the latest exhibit to be different, so he went with larger photos.

“I wanted the exhibit to stand out more,” he said. “I wanted it to be larger than life just like each person’s passion.”

The exhibit has been

both fun and a learning experience for the photographer.

“As I went from one photo shoot to the next, I became enthralled with what I was learning,” he said. “We really have some professional people in the area like a dog trainer and a horse trainer who have performed and shown all over the United States.”

He was intrigued by Gary Gasaway’s passion of racing pigeons, where birds are released over 300 miles away from Alcorn County and then released to see which one flies back home the fast-

est.

“Bird racing captivated by attention,” admitted Avery.

The exhibit will be on display through June and perhaps longer, he said.

“I really hope we all learn something from this exhibit,” added Avery, as each photo comes with a bio and some history of the passion and the person. “I hope this will give the viewer an idea about how diverse we are in our interests.”

“I really appreciate all the cooperation of those who participated,” he said.

The story of Confederate General William Cabell

Awhile back I wrote about the four Hollis brothers who served together in the same Union regiment.

Today’s story is about a Confederate general who was one of six brothers who chose to wear gray William Lewis Cabell.

William, of the Virginia Cabell’s, was born in Danville in 1827, the second son of Benjamin Cabell, a veteran of the War of 1812 and said to be a direct descendant of Pocahontas.

Benjamin had seven sons, yet only one, William, was a professional soldier. A West Pointer, he ranked 33rd out of 44 graduates in the class of 1850.

Lt. Cabell was assigned to the 7th Infantry and spent most of the next decade serving as a staff officer in the Nebraska Territory. In 1856 he married the love of his life, Miss Harriet Rector, known to one and all as “Shingo.”

When the war became inevitable William made his way to Richmond and was appointed a major.

His old duty became his new duty, and he bounced around on staff assignments in the War Department and at the H.Q.’s of Beauregard and Gen. Joe Johnston.

Five of his brothers would serve the South as volunteers. John Roy, Benjamin and Joseph were in the 38th Virginia, George in the 18th Virginia, and Algernon was a major in the Quartermaster Department.

Another transfer came to William in January of ’62 when he finally left staff duty behind and reported for duty in Ar-

kansas. Why Arkansas?

Perhaps because his father-in-law was the governor.

He took command of the troops along the White River, but missed the fight at Pea Ridge. In the days following the battle Van Dorn’s Army of the West was summoned east to Corinth. Cabell proved invaluable in organizing the steamboats to ferry the army down the White River and across the Mississippi. William was rewarded with a promotion to acting Brigadier General and the command of an infantry brigade.

His brigade was on hand at Farmington in May and again in September at Iuka, but neither time were they called on to fight. He had missed out on the last three battles and was getting impatient to show his mettle.

His men knew he was a scrapper and called him “Old Tige.”

The chance finally came at Corinth on October 3, 1862. Cabell’s brigade was made up of tough Arkansas troops but again, they were kept in reserve.

Finally, late in the afternoon, he was directed to send two of his regiments to join in the fighting near Battery F while he led the remainder of the brigade into the fray at the White House.

The fighting was nearly over when they arrived, but there was time enough for Cabell to be struck in the foot by a spent musket ball. It didn’t penetrate the skin, but was as painful as if he had been struck on the foot by a sledge hammer.

On the morning of the 4th Old Tige’s brigade

was placed on the heights on the west side of Elam Creek, (along current Nelson Street). Once again he was in reserve. The men hunkered down as the spot was exposed to the “furious discharge of grape, canister, and shell that was kept up without a moment’s cessation, sufficient to demoralize any troops EXCEPT such as the troops which composed MY brigade.”

The fateful call came at 11 a.m. The Missouri Brigade under Col. Elijah Gates had broken the Union line at Battery Powell and was calling for reinforcements to exploit the breach. Cabell’s men crossed the tracks of the Mobile & Ohio at the double-quick and turned to face the Union line. As they moved forward it became clear they were too late.

Gates’ success had been fleeting and he had been forced to retreat. Instead of assisting in a Confederate breakthrough, the Arkansans found themselves all alone in a charge against a resurgent Union line. They didn’t stand a chance.

The enemy artillery at Batteries Phillips, Williams, and Powell opened a devastating fire that tore great gaps in Cabell’s line. The Federal infantry joined in with crashing volleys of musket fire and the brigade was forced to retreat.

Two of his regimental commanders were dead along with another 630 men killed, wounded, or captured. He had started the battle with 1,367.

The remnants of the Arkansas Brigade limped away with the rest of the

army to spend the night at Chewalla. The next morning they could hear artillery up ahead. It was the head of their division fighting for the vital crossing of the Hatchie River at Davis Bridge.

Cabell arrived on the heights above the river as the pitiful remains of two Confederate brigades were retreating back to the eastern bank. Van Dorn’s army was in desperate straits and on the verge of being caught between two converging enemy forces.

It was the moment Cabell was born for.

He directed his regiments to file into a sunken road overlooking the river. Due to straggling in the terrible heat they had been reduced to only 550 men, but the position was a strong one, almost like a natural rifle-pit. His four cannon were bellowing and kept the enemy at bay while the last of the division filed in on his left.

The Union infantry and artillery opened a withering fire as they came charging across the bridge. General Cabell ordered his men to fire and for three hours kept the enemy pinned down in the feeble cover along the river. More artillery and infantry arrived to strengthen the line and they inflicted hundreds of wounds while suffering a mere ten casualties of their own.

At one point they nearly ran out of ammo, but Cabell went looking for more and found enough for each man to fire another 10 shots. When that was gone, he directed them back across a field to a new position and while

they were moving William’s horse became “very frantic.” The frightened beast fell to the ground on top of its rider.

Cabell’s thigh and hip were paralyzed and he had to be carried from the field. But he had bought the time Van Dorn needed and the army was saved.

(By the way, the sunken road where Old Tige’s men fought like tigers is still there. It is part of the battlefield administered

by Big Hill Pond State Park.)

After the battle the army was reorganized and William reverted to his permanent rank of Major. President Davis had rejected his nomination as brigadier general and once his leg healed up Major Cabell was sent back to Arkansas where he served for the next year and a half.

In early ’63 the President realized his error and William was once again promoted to Brigadier General -- this time for good. He fought in a number of battles and engagements, but was captured in October of 1864.

He ended the war as a prisoner at Fort Warren in Boston.

His post-war life was an active one. He was admitted to the Arkansas bar and practiced law for a few years before moving to Texas. He became the Vice President of the Texas Trunk Railroad Company and was later appointed U.S. Marshal.

Active in veteran affairs, he was the commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the United Confederate Veterans.

His greatest accomplishments came as the

three-term mayor of Dallas where he oversaw some of the greatest growth in the history of the city. He and Shingo had seven kids and one of them, Benjamin, followed in Dad’s footsteps to become the mayor of Dallas.

The Cabell story takes a strange turn when you consider two of Benjamin’s sons - Earle and Charles. Earle Cabell was the third of his line to be mayor of Dallas and was in office when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Daley Plaza.

Charles was a four-star general in the Air Force when he was appointed Deputy Director of the CIA. He was forced to resign by President Kennedy in the wake of the Bay of Pigs scandal. Conspiracy theorists tie both the Cabell brothers to the Kennedy assassination.

We could get caught up in talking about how far the apples fall from the tree, but this much is certain -- William Cabell was an extraordinary man of Texas, a gifted soldier for the Confederacy and a patriotic American.

Patriotic American? Indeed he was.

At the age of 71 the old Confederate offered his services to his country in the Spanish-American War. He was too old, of course, but contented himself to proudly follow the deeds of his son “Duvy,” a West Pointer who served in Cuba and the Philippines and retired as a colonel in the United States Army.

150 years ago, a brief Civil War truce for burial

ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. — For a brief time during the Civil War, hostilities at St. Francisville stilled while Masons from the Union Navy and Confederate Army buried one of their own — a 38-yearold Union gunboat commander who shot himself.

This weekend, Masons and history buffs plan a 3-day commemoration for the 150th anniversary of the June 1863 truce called to bury Lt. Cmdr. John Hart of the USS Albatross. There will be a parade, a funeral re-enactment and talks about Civil War medicine and funerals, Hart and Confederate Capt. W.W. Leake, a Mason who approved the truce and put flowers on Hart’s grave three times a year long af-

ter the war had ended.

Hart’s death on June 11, 1863, came during the sieges of Vicksburg, Miss., and Port Hudson, La., during Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s campaign to cut the Confederacy in two.

“It’s significant in the turmoil ... that they were able to become civilized to some degree. Here was an enemy of their country, so to speak, and they decided they would bury him with not only the Masonic service but the Episcopalian service,” said Frank Karwowski, historian of the Masonic lodge in Schenectady, N.Y., where Hart entered freemasonry and rose to the rank of master six years before his death.

It wasn’t the only time Masonic fraternity prevailed during the Civil War, at least for burial.

In a 2006 article in The

Scottish Rite Journal, Michael A. Halleran cited four others, one under fire just after the battle of Gettysburg. Union Capt.

Thomas Foy took several men to collect the body of Confederate Col. Joseph Wasden of the 22nd Georgia Infantry and buried it in a nearby field, he wrote.

Two soldiers of the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Regiment described the incident in their diaries, Halleran said. Lt. Col. Elisha Hunt Rhodes (who later became a Mason and a general), wrote, “As I am not a Mason I do not understand the matter. While the burial was going on the skirmishers were constantly firing.”

Hart’s wasn’t a battlefield burial. His executive officer, Theodore Dubois, was first allowed into St.

Francisville to look for a coffin. Unable to find a sealed metal coffin in which to ship the body to New York, Dubois arranged to have Hart buried in the Masonic section of the cemetery at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville. About 1900, the Daughters of the Confederacy got the Navy to set up a headstone, replacing a cypress board that had rotted away, Karwowski said, and in 1956 the Grand Lodge of Louisiana installed a marble slab over the grave.

About the time the Daughters of the Confederacy asked for the headstone, Karwowski said, the New Orleans Picayune and other local newspapers reported that Leake still maintained Hart’s grave. Leake died in 1912.

As he has since 1999,

Karwowski will play Hart in the living history presentation Friday night and Hart’s second-incommand in the funeral re-enactment Saturday.

Leake has always been played by a member of the St. Francisville lodge — first U.S. Rep. John Rarick, then Leake’s great-great-grandson Robert Leake, and now Paul Martin.

Four of Hart’s descendants, including John Elliott Hart V and VI, are coming from California and Washington state for the ceremony. Greatgreat-great-granddaughter Mary Servais of San Diego said her family went once before, when they learned about the reenactment. “Now we’re going back because it’s the 150th,” she said.

Hart had spent half his life in the Navy and com-

manded the USS Albatross, a steamboat also rigged as a three-masted schooner, during the twin sieges of sites needed to control the Mississippi where it met the Red River, a vital Confederate supply line.

The night of March 14, 1863, the Albatross and Union Adm. David Farragut’s flagship, the Hartford, had steamed past seven batteries of Confederate guns on a bluff over the Mississippi River at Port Hudson.

The Albatross was one of three small gunboats lashed to larger sloops; the other two pairs and a side-wheel frigate didn’t make it.

Facts about bass fishing with cranks

When a “starry-eyed” avid young bass fisherman meanders down the aisles of his or her favorite sporting goods store David g l a r i n g Green at all the crank-baits Outdoors to choose from, the experience can be overwhelming in choosing which ones should be included in their arsenal.

Crank-baits come in a wide range of sizes, colors, dive to varying depths and wobble uniformly in different ways. In making the best choices, the angler should study the variables that could ultimately affect the outcome

of their fishing trip. Careful consideration should be given to the habitat normally fished, the conditions and the season.

Answers to each will make the choice surprisingly easy, at least for a lure to start with.

Lipless crank-baits, commonly used by many area fishermen, are easy to use and are very effective while being fished around any type of vegetation or down the side of a rocky shoreline. Because of their design, lipless cranks are the best when retrieved fairly quickly, causing bass to strike out of instinct, without giving them time to inspect for authenticity. Chartreuse baits and chrome baits with a black or blue tint down the back are two of

the more popular choices.

Lures of the lipless variety, such as the Rat-LTrap, are also effective when using a stop-and-go action retrieve, but what sets them apart from other cranks is their effectiveness in fishing around vegetation. Other types of cranks are more likely to become entangled badly, whereas if lipless baits get hung-up, a quick pop of the rod will usually free the bait. Often, a bass will strike as the lure comes loose.

Shallow running crankbaits are generally used in two to six feet of water, retrieved similar to that of the lipless bait, and they are primarily designed to bang off of structure like rocks and stumps, triggering reaction strikes

as they bounce off erratically. When bass are holding in the shallows, these lures will out fish lipless baits in a heartbeat. Variations of red, chartreuse and white are always top colors to try.

The longer a bill is on a crank-bait, the deeper it will run. So if you think bass are on a pattern of holding offshore to deepwater structure, you’ll need a lure that will explore those precise depths.

When shopping, look on the package and it will give the maximum depth range the lure is expected to run.

The techniques and lure colors used when fishing shallow water crank-baits is the same with deep diving baits.

Another critical aspect that distinguishes a

crank-bait from another is the way it dancing during a retrieve. Some swim with a tight wiggle, while others swing out wide from side to side. A good many fall somewhere in between.

A lure with a wide wobble usually has a rounded body and a square bill, which works great for fishing stained water, enabling the bait to be found easier. Lures of this type also excel when bass are in an extra aggressive feeding mode.

Flat-sided tight wobblers, such as the lipless Rat-L-Trap, tend to perform best when the water is cold or extremely clear or when a high pressure system has the fish a bit on the tentative side.

An angler can never

have too many different sizes and colors of crankbaits, and that’s a fact.

Bass can be caught on crank-baits throughout the year, but sometimes it takes a little studying and experimenting to figure out which ones will work best according to the season, the habitat of the lake, and the conditions encountered at the given time.

Quilt showing The Needle Chasers Quilt Guild has invited

NEMCC Day Camp Northeast Mississippi Community College’s 2013 Day Camp, “Play, Learn and Grow Together,” participants will be able to take part in creative crafts and individual art projects and take part in individual sports such as swimming as well as learn the values of citizenship while taking part in the four-day day camp. Northeast’s Day Camp is open for children ages 5-11 on the Northeast Booneville campus from June 1720. Participants must be entering kindergarten or turning five years old on or before Sept. 1.

Cost for the four-day camp is $100 for those choosing to pre-register for the camp and $105 after deadline if space is available. Camp runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day and the entire camp is limited to 40 participants. Each child should bring a swimsuit and money for daily snacks. King, Mellencamp break rules with musica!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Stephen King and John Mellencamp had a simple problem when they started the long odyssey to create a musical.

“Quite frankly, we didn’t know what the hell we were doing,” Mellencamp said.

Thirteen years later they’ve created “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County,” a musical that’s not quite like anything out there — as you might expect from two of America’s most independent artists. Along the way, the author and the singer picked up T Bone Burnett to serve as a general contractor, enlisted stars like Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson and Rosanne Cash, and broke several rules in the classic musical theater handbook.

King says he might have given up long ago had Mellencamp not kept rolling things forward.

Mellencamp says that’s a bunch of bull. Now that

they’re done — “Ghost Brothers” is out this week with a CD box set, minidocumentary and e-book, with a theatrical tour starting in October in Bloomington, Ind. — they say the project strengthened their friendship and left them with a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

“This morning when I went over to my office there was a big stack of the box sets and I looked at that thing and said, ‘We actually have a product here,’” King said. “It’s all been give up to this point.

You give of your talent and you give of your time, and then you get something back. It’s here and people are either going to play these tunes or not, buy and download or not, go to see the show when it comes to a town near them or not.”

The musical started with a real-life ghost story. Mellencamp was looking for a cabin on Lake Monroe in his home state of Indiana. As the owners handed over the keys, they

casually let it drop that the cabin might be haunted, the spiritual remnants of a terrible tragedy that had happened decades earlier when two brothers quarreled over a girl.

The story came with a stack of ancient pulp magazines that detailed the deaths in grisly detail, complete with photos of a headless body and plenty of purple prose.

Mellencamp scoffed, had the cabin remodeled and took his family to the lake for a long visit. They noticed the “weird vibe” immediately.

“I don’t believe in this stuff,” Mellencamp said, “but stuff would start moving. You’d start smelling cigars. Funny smells would appear and stuff would turn on and turn off. It was kinda creepy, you know?”

Mellencamp unloaded the cabin and eventually relayed the story to his agent sometime before the turn of the century.

He’d recently been approached about doing a musical based on his hits,

but he wasn’t interested.

The agent suggested the ghost story could serve as the basis for that musical, and suggested they contact mutual client King to help write it.

King and Mellencamp had met a few times over the years, and to Mellencamp’s surprise the idea quickly took root. It was just the kind of challenge King likes.

“Once you get to a certain age — I’m in my 60s now — you’ve got to try to keep expanding your field,” King said. “You’ve got to try new things and if you don’t, you tend to get conservative. I always say you dig yourself a rut and then you furnish it. John asked me when we started this if I’d ever done anything like this before. I said, ‘John, yes, I have. I wrote a play for my Boy Scout troop when I was 11 years old. And it was a big hit with my relatives.’”

They traveled to New York together where they took in several musicals on Broadway. And almost nothing appealed to them.

“It was like, how does this work?” Mellencamp said. “What we saw on these musicals, at least to me, was a bunch of s--- we didn’t want to do. OK, we don’t want any dancing, that’s the first thing. We just don’t. We don’t want this, we don’t want that.

We don’t want to advance the story forward with song, it’s too corny.”

They decided they’d use their songs to color their characters. The spoken-word sections of the musical would drive the

story, just as they do in a play.

“I just feasted on that because I’m a big rock music fan and country music fan and alt-rock fan and all that stuff, and I thought, that’s what music does,” King said.

“Music speaks to the heart and words speak to the brain, and we can really do something here. We saw eye to eye on a lot of things and one was we didn’t really want this big orchestral, violin-heavy music. We wanted a kind of American soundtrack.”

King roughed out the story about two generations of brothers in fictional Lake Belle Reve, Miss., caught in a tragic tape loop and marked out spaces for songs, sometimes including a little rhyme to give Mellencamp cues. Mellencamp then worked up songs from several perspectives.

That’s where Burnett, the only producer Mellencamp’s ever had, enters the picture about five years ago. Mellencamp played him the songs and, always up for a challenge, Burnett signed on.

“It’s a very interesting group of tunes he’s put together and I do believe some of his best songs,” Burnett said. “Time will be the judge of that but it seems so to me. They’re real powerful tunes, and real stripped down, ofthe-earth type tunes. ...

John and Stephen work a lot of the same turf, the legends of small-town America, that stuff. So I can see the resonance between the two of them

pretty clearly.”

Burnett brought in friends and colleagues to hang Spanish moss from tree limbs, add humidity to the air and bring the characters to life. Actors like Matthew McConaughey and Meg Ryan helped with the spokenword parts. Crow sings from the perspective of the coveted woman at the center of the story. Kristofferson provides a moral compass. And Costello had a great time taking it fire and brimstone.

“I had to be the Devil in that story so I made some very extraordinary sounds,” he said. “I mean I was creaking. I sounded like my teeth were about to fall out. I thought the Devil, that can’t be an ordinary voice. So I sang in harmonic shrieks and whispering and everything.”

The thing that Mellencamp loves about the final product is you can’t pigeonhole it. All the principles will be replaced by other actors and musicians when the musical hits the road around the country later this year.

The ultimate goal is to debut “Ghost Brothers” on Broadway, but producers have been leery of that unconventional structure.

No matter.

“If it ends up there, great, and if it doesn’t, that’s fine too,” Mellencamp said. “Because the real victory in ‘Ghost Brothers’ is that very rarely do you collaborate with somebody that you walk away and go, ‘You know, I really like that guy. I really had ... fun with that guy.’”

Jennifer Lopez brings ‘Fosters’ to ABC Family

BURBANK, Calif. — “The Fosters” is a study in unlikely bedfellows.

The new ABC Family drama pairs mainstream star Jennifer Lopez and Peter Paige, who played bubbly Emmett in the cult favorite series “Queer as Folk,” as executive producers. It brings to television a rare depiction of a lesbian couple as heads of a household.

And “The Fosters,” airing its second episode 8 p.m. CDT Monday, combines a focus on the generally ignored lives of foster children with the challenges of an ethnically diverse home — a big reach for an hourlong series aimed at teenagers and young adults.

“I think in every time we have to kind of push that envelope and really be a reflection of what’s going on in society and ... this show does that and in a smart, edgy, funny, heartfelt way,” said Lopez, who’s producing it with co-creators Paige and Bradley Bredeweg.

The 43-year-old actress-singer-dancer candidly cites her life as an example of the changing nature of family.

“You can’t keep spoonfeeding the idea of what the perfect family is. It just doesn’t exist,” she said. “Even myself, I have two kids, their dad (Marc Anthony) doesn’t live at home with us. I’m divorced. They have four stepbrothers and sisters from two other moms. It’s not traditional.”

“We all wish we had that fairy tale thing in our heads,” Lopez said.

But when it doesn’t come true for children they shouldn’t have to think, ‘Oh, I don’t have the mom and the dad, the perfect three kids and a dog. There’s something wrong with me,’” she added.

and Sherri Saum as Stef Foster and Lena Adams, the couple whose family includes Stef’s biological son (David Lambert) from a former marriage, adopted twins (Cierra Ramirez, Jake T. Austin) and a newly arrived foster teenager (Maia Mitchell) whose difficult past has left her wary. Oh, and Stef is a police officer who works with her ex-husband.

It makes for a tangled web that’s rich in storytelling possibilities, not just messages, its creators said.

“Draw a line between any two of these characters and there’s a relationship that hasn’t been explored before,” Paige said.

“What’s it like to be the adopted brother whose best friend is the biological brother? What’s it like to be a foster child who’s come in the house and finds herself drawn to one of the boys?

“What’s it like to have your ex-husband, your son’s biological father who you work with, around, and does he have a role with your other kids?”

Quipped Bredeweg: “My God, I created the show and I’m so lost right now.”

An expert on the foster system consults with the show to help with accuracy. But Paige said liberties are being taken to serve the stories. Most foster children, for example, get their own bedroom; that’s dispensed with in “The Fosters” to up the drama ante.

“We are not pretending to, nor would we be interested in, doing a docu-series about the foster system. We’re after a family story where some people are chosen, where everybody has come in through a different door and finds themselves in the same room,” he said.

ABC Family is used to taking chances with such shows as “Switched

at Birth,” which features deaf characters and subtitles. But how does it determine that its young audience is ready for “The Fosters,” including its lesbian couple and the challenges they face?

“It’s really a gut check,” said Kate Juergens, executive vice president in charge of programming and development for the channel. “The millennial generation is so much more colorblind than the generation before them.

And gay is so not an issue for them. ... They’re so much more used to people being out.”

Cast member Lambert, who’s 19, agrees: “Even if it’s an unconventional family, at the end of the day it’s really just a family.”

A total of 10 episodes will air, and Paige and Bredeweg hope for many more to come. Lopez’s involvement was key to getting the show greenlighted and, they hope, keeping it alive. “You want to get a relationship drama made, you attach a superstar,” Paige observed — and she and her Nuyorican Productions continue as active partners.

“They weigh in on story and casting. ... She’s not just hands-off over in the corner, being gorgeous and glamorous,” Paige said.

“Casting is her passion,” Bredeweg added: Lopez is keen on finding new talent, and it was her call that the twins be Latino.

As Lopez sees it, “The Fosters” stands for what she’s learned “are the important things in life, which are family equals love. It’s a place where you go for unconditional love, to be accepted, to feel safe. And at the end of the day, that there’s no real ‘normal.’ That there’s no set thing of what a family is at this moment in time in our lives.”

Gettysburg readies for 150th anniversary of battle

GETTYSBURG, Pa. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The commemoration of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg will include amenities that soldiers would have relished 150 years ago.

A groomed path to the top of Little Round Top. Expanded cellphone coverage. Dozens of portable toilets.

The National Park Service and a cadre of community organizers are busily putting the finishing touches on preparations for the commemoration of the pivotal battle of the American Civil War that cemented this small Pennsylvania townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s place in U.S history. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected for a 10-day schedule of events that begin June 29. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready,â&#x20AC;?

Bob Kirby, superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park, said in a recent interview.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready for what the world would like to see.â&#x20AC;?

But that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily mean just flooding the historical 6,000-acre battlefield, and surrounding town, with the modern comforts of home. To help visitors better understand what happened at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1-3, 1863, the National Park Service first decided to look back.

There were about 51,000 casualties â&#x20AC;&#x201D; historical estimates put the total dead around 7,500 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at Gettysburg, considered a major turning point of the war after Northern forces turned away a Confederate advance.

The battlefield rehabilitation process grew out of a master plan in 1999 that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t set the 150th anniversary in 2013 as a deadline â&#x20AC;&#x201D; though it was a welcome and timely coin-

cidence. The rehab work, which is mostly complete, is concentrated on areas of â&#x20AC;&#x153;major battle action.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ever go back in time to 1863, but you can deal with the major features so you can better understand the story,â&#x20AC;?

Kirby said.

Other fresh elements have been added in recent years, including an airy visitor center that opened in 2008, operated by the Gettysburg Foundation on behalf of and in partnership with the National Park Service.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bound to attract scores of newcomers as well as repeat visitors. The park typically attracts 1.2 million visitors a year â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a mark that park officials expect to easily exceed.

Margaret Eefsting, of Grand Rapids, Mich., returned recently for a weeklong trip to tour the battlefield, just three years after her most recent visit to Gettysburg. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If it takes me all day, I

The park will be much more crowded, too, in a couple of months â&#x20AC;&#x201D; about 200,000 visitors are expected for anniversary week in late June and early July, according to Carl Whitehill, a spokesman for the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Most of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2,600 hotel rooms are booked, and visitors are also taking

up rooms from as far away as Frederick, Md., about 35 miles south.

Some visitors may bypass the park entirely to attend either one of the two battle re-enactments taking place on the weekends bookending the midweek anniversary events.

Such re-enactments are held on private property, not park grounds.

The summertime events are just one of the highlights of a 150th anniversary commemoration thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been in the works for years.

Another major gathering is planned in November for the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, which President Abraham Lincoln famously delivered at the dedication ceremony for Soldiersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; National Cemetery.

The address began with the words â&#x20AC;&#x153;Four score and seven years ago.â&#x20AC;?
