“I am really excited and thrilled how wonderful the facility is looking,” said shelter director Charlotte Doehner. “The shelter is a fun place to come out to now.” The shelter has undergone several new changes over the past few months. Local high

school students recently completed painting a majority of the facility as part of the Art for the Shelter Project. The Art for the Shelter project called on students to use their skills in art, interior design, Please see DEDICATION | 2

Local officials gathered to thank existing industrial employers Wednesday while the state chamber of commerce chief praised Corinth and Alcorn County’s role in Mississippi’s rising economic development profile. “Things are happening in Mississippi,” said Mississippi Economic Council President and CEO Blake Wilson. “In this neck of the woods, your leaders are putting you in the place of greatest opportunity.” Existing employers have a key role. “Those of us who make our lives in the Jackson area know the blue chip corporations that are located here help also establish Alcorn County as being on the map,” said Wilson. “That’s a huge, huge plus for this area.” Taking an unconventional approach, he said, such as the regional TAP Alliance collaboration, can lead to a big payoff. “When a company looks at a region, they don’t see political boundaries,” said Wilson. “They see a region relative to employment, relative to natural resources, relative to transportation resources. They don’t much care where that county or city line is. A great case in point of that — the Toyota plant.”

Wilson said Mississippi is becoming a more formidable competitor among the 12 key states that are in Wilson the hunt for the same industrial prospects, while the economy is also turning in the state’s favor. “So what you’re doing by creating that alliance, by continuing to focus on economic growth, is you are putting Alcorn County and this whole region in the place of greatest opportunity,” he said. Another key: Do not get discouraged. “If the next big project announced is not in Alcorn County, it doesn’t mean you’re not on the map,” he said. Outlining promising developments, Alliance CEO Brett Marlar mentioned the Manpower Road and Harper Road improvements for Caterpillar, efforts to revitalize the Wurlitzer property and the completion of the surface water project for Corinth’s water supply. Sponsored by ACE Power with the city, county and The Alliance, the event was held at the Mississippi State Extension Service Exhibit Hall.

It going to be a great

event with wonderful food — something for everybody.” Relay for Life is the flagship event for the American Cancer Society, a night when months of fundraising activities conclude and the community comes together to fight for a cure — and honor those whose lives have been touched by cancer.
