Despite eye disease, Tish County senior excels

Former Major League Baseball slugger Darryl Strawberry shared his experiences of being a member of God’s team with over 500 at Oakland Baptist Church on Thursday.

Strawberry, who played with the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees over a 17-year career, was in town as part of the Living Free Ministries Celebration Banquet.

“Lives are being lost today because people haven’t given in to the power of the cross,” said the 1983 National League Rookie of the Year. “Jesus is a bad dude … no one loves you like He does.”

Asbestos found in old building

IUKA — Kayla Stricklin is constantly pushing herself.

The Tishomingo County High School senior is ranked fifth out of a class of 141 students. She is a member of the Beta Club with a GPA of 3.96 and the Foreign Language Club. The 18-year-old also found time to be a member of the band for seven years.

Stricklin has accomplished all of that and more -- all while being legally blind with a rare eye disease.

The bass drum player in the TCHS band has Coats’ Disease, a condition she has lived with since birth.

“It gets hard sometimes,” she said. “When I was younger, people made fun of me and it was embarrassing, but I am still standing.”

Coats’ Disease is a very rare condition where there is abnormal development in the blood vessels behind the retina. The blood rich retinal capillaries break open, leaking the serum portion of the blood into the back of eye. The leakage causes the retina to swell, and can cause partial or complete detachment of the retina.

“It’s a complicated condition she has to deal with her whole life,” said her father Jerry. “It was very frustrating to me when we first found out about it … you

Police and paramedics converged on the grim scene near the American Legion. The tragic accident was not real, but it triggered raw emotion in many of those who watched.

What appeared to passersby to be a horrible crash on Saturday, May 4, was a staged exercise by the American Legion Riders and local emergency officials for Motorcycle Awareness Day. They hoped to focus public attention on the need for motorists to look for motorcycles on the roads.

The presence of asbestos has put a temporary halt to any further developments at the old gas station property at 600 Fillmore Street.

Attorney Nick Bain, representing property owner John Dodd, said testing showed asbestos throughout the structure, which is part of the Downtown Corinth Historic District.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted on Tuesday to require the owner to shore up the roof of the building to make it stable.

Any work on the building is now on hold until the owner can get some direction on abatement.

The city has agreed to the delay.

Former baseball star reaches out to youth

The group’s slogan is, “Be aware ... bikers everywhere.”

“We don’t want to scare anybody and make them not want to ride,” said Lambert. “We want

the people that drive to see us. When you pull up to a stop sign, you see other cars coming, but your mind’s eye is not trained for a motorcycle.”

Those who attended heard testimonials from Tom Lewis of Corinth, who lost part of a leg in an accident, and Jeff Cunningham of New Al-

bany, who was a motorcycle training officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol before the accident that changed his life.

With this first event deemed a success, the riders hope to expand the event in future years and to also take their message into the schools.

No one knows that better than former Major League Baseball player Darryl Strawberry.

The winner of four world series championships while a member of the New York Mets and Yankees wants troubled young people to know they can too.

“I was always in trouble when I was 13- and 14-years-old,” he told close to 30 alternative school students. “No one ever told me I was walking down the wrong road, but I am telling you today there are consequences with what you do.”

As he glanced over the room, the ordained minister had a message of hope for the students.

“Each of you were created for good and have a gift,” he said. “Now is the time to start using that gift … this is a difficult time for you, but you have to believe you are wonderful.”

Known for his long home runs, the 1983 National League Rookie of the Year told the group his troubles began as a teen.

“I was in trouble smoking weed and drinking at the age of 13,” he shared. “Later on in life it manifested itself and you don't want that.”

Strawberry spent 11 months in prison and battled addiction problems that cut short his MLB career. He also underwent two surgeries for cancer.

“Being undisciplined put me in prison,” he said.

“When I became a follower of Jesus my life changed.”

The eight-time all-star told the students others love them and want to help.

“Look around this room … people are here who are

trying to save you from yourself,” said the father of nine children. “I am not telling you anything that I haven't told each of my children.”

Strawberry urged the group to not give up on themselves.

“You guys are just stumbling right now,” said the former Mets outfielder.

“Just because you mess up doesn't mean it's over … stand up and keep trying.”

for the outfielder, who hit 335 home runs and drove in 1,000 runs during his career, is serving Jesus by speaking a message of hope and helping others transform their lives through the power of the gospel. He and wife, Tracy, travel around the country delivering the message of hope through their Strawberry Ministries.

“I have victory today because I repented to God and he forgave me,” said the eight-time all-star. “The world didn’t love me, but Jesus did … He was always there even when I wasn’t right.”

“God changed his life,” said Wilson. “Darryl has a heart for serving Him.” Strawberry encouraged those in attendance to spend time reading God’s word.

“This is the truth,” he said while holding up a bible.

“It’s the greatest book you will ever read … it will set you free.”

He pointed out mistakes are part of life and everyone has issues of some sort.

“We all make mistakes and God cleans us up,” said the former New York slugger. “A lot of times we don’t understand why we have to go through what we do, but what you do isn’t who you are.”

Jesus is the answer, according to the ordained minister.

“He has a plan for everyone and it doesn’t matter what you have been through,” he said. “Jesus is the only savior and He will never leave you or forsake you … just hang on.”

Wilson said Strawberry’s message goes along with what Living Free is all about.

“The biggest thing we do is share hope through through Jesus,” said Wilson.

“We teach takers to become givers.”

Though “… skin color has maintained an intimate relationship with class” since “the earliest times,” the issue of colorism has its American roots in the early 1500s when “mulatto” offspring of White men and Black women gained power through education and social bridging between Black and White populations. Later, preference was shown for lighterskinned individuals as “house slaves,” who largely disparaged darker-skinned field workers.

Today, several decades after discrimination based on color was made illegal, colorism still exists. Some blame it on music videos and Black songwriters. Others ac-

cuse fashion and movies.

The authors also point at politics and world policy, yet they say that there are things you can do to “lessen colorism’s pernicious effects.”

Contact television networks if you notice a lack of Black journalists or actors. Let editors know that you won’t purchase their magazines until they stop Photoshopping pictures of models of color. Use the power of social media to further your cause, state your opinions, and gather support.

These days, it seems that we like to pretend we live in an enlightened world that’s on its way to being “color-blind.” We have a Black president, after all, and today’s youth are more accepting of racial differences.

Some think we’ve gotten past skin color, but reading “The Color Complex”

shows otherwise.

With great dismay and a surprising amount of quietly cynical humor, authors Kathy RussellCole, Midge Wilson, and Ronald E. Hall re-examine the divisiveness of colorism today, in contrast to what it was two decades ago. New, eyeopening research and fresh information show readers that though there are gains in some areas, colorism is far from a dead issue; in fact, with the rise of globalism, it’s actually spread.

This is a fascinating, albeit quite uncomfortable book that I recommend for audiences both Black and White. Newly updated, “The Color Complex” deserves a whole new look.

Spring charity sale of Belk’s Rienzi man arrested raises more than $5.3 million A Rienzi man faces a felony drug charge in an ongoing narcotics investigation.

Jory Lee Treece, 35, of County Road 571, was arrested Friday by the Alcorn Narcotics Unit after a stop and charged with sale of a controlled substance. Bond was set at

$5,000.

Treece was stopped in the parking lot of a business on Highway 72 after officers spotted him driving.

Narcotics Officer Darrell Hopkins said officers plan to contact several others involved in the case, and additional arrests are expected.

On Saturday, April 27 the four-hour semi-annual shopping event served as a fundraising tool for

participating organizations that sell $5 tickets to their supporters. It’s also an opportunity for customers to give back to local nonprofits while taking advantage of special in-store discounts.

“Giving back to our

communities has been a Belk tradition, and our Charity Sale is one of our favorite ways to positively and directly impact each community that we serve,” said Jessica Graham, vice president, communications.

Our View

Return of the Urban Youth Corps Program remains a good idea We are glad to see the return of the Urban Youth Corps Program in the City of Corinth.

The city is receiving a $35,000 grant for the 2013 summer program, which will provide eight to 12 jobs for people between the ages of 16 and 25. The Federal Highway Administration funds are channeled through the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The city has participated in the program several times in the past, and it is returning after a break of a few years.

“Not only will this provide some youth with an opportunity for employment and to obtain some on-the-job training, but this will provide a venue for accomplishing some needed work in the community,” Projects Coordinator Kim Ratliff recently told the Daily Corinthian.

The program is set to run from the first week of June through the end of July. The pay rate will be at or slightly above the minimum wage. Participants can expect to be involved in several work activities. Ratliff mentioned painting, cleaning major thoroughfares and intersections, and maintenance of grounds and landscaping at some historical properties related to transportation.

The program also incorporates some instruction in basic life skills.

This will be a good experience for some local youth, providing employment and training.

Youth will be able to reflect with pride on what they accomplished on projects to better the community.

College bubble bursts after decades of extravagance Markets work. But sometimes they take time.

That’s the uncomfortable lesson that proprietors of America’s colleges and universities are learning.

For many years, market forces didn’t seem to apply to them. There was a widespread societal consensus that a college education was a good economic investment.

Politicians gave lip service to the idea that everyone should go to college. No one should be stopped by a lack of money.

There was historic precedent. The G.I. Bill of Rights vastly expanded college populations and helped build prosperous postWorld War II America.

Putting even more through college would make us even more prosperous.

So Congress passed student loan and grant programs to make it easier for people to pay for college and university tuitions.

That increased potential higher education revenues.

Surprise! Over the last three decades, tuitions rose faster than the economy grew.

For a long time, that didn’t seem to be a problem.

College still seemed like a good investment during the quarter century of lowinflation economic growth from 1982 to 2007. You could pay off those loans with earnings increased by your degree.

Meanwhile colleges and universities — and not just the highly selective ones — Michael c o m p e t e d Barone for students whose test Columnist scores would improve their ratings in the U.S. News College Guide by giving “scholarships” that actually were discounts on the tuition list price.

Government helped to produce an ever-increasing demand for higher education. So higher education administrators saw no need to compete on price. Higher tuitions just gave your school more prestige.

Now the higher education bubble has burst. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that that the average “tuition discount rate” offered incoming freshmen last fall by private colleges and universities has reached an all-time high of 45 percent.

At the same time, their “sticker price” tuitions have increased by the smallest amount in the last dozen years. Tuitions for in-state students at public four-year colleges and universities increased by the smallest amount during that period.

Applicants are negotiating bigger discounts than they used to. Market competition has kicked in.

What has happened is that in a recessionary and sluggish economy, potential customers have been figuring out that a college diploma may not be a good investment — particularly if it entails six-figure college loan debt that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy.

The Millennial Generation that voted so heavily for Barack Obama — 66 to 32 percent in 2008, 60 to 37 percent in 2012 — has had a hard time finding jobs, even with diplomas in hand. Especially if their degrees are in gender studies or similar fields beloved of academics.

In even worse condition are those students who never get a degree, a disproportionate number of whom are blacks and Hispanics admitted under affirmative action programs who prove unable to keep up with the pace of instruction at schools where most students enter much better prepared.

We see in higher education something like what we saw in housing. Government programs aimed at increasing college education and homeownership, particularly among minorities, turn out to hurt many of the intended beneficiaries.

The intentions of the people who created these programs were good. The results — well, not so much.

Home ownership is a good thing generally, but it’s not good for everybody.

The young and transient,

for example, are often better off renting.

Higher education is a good thing generally too, but again not for everyone. People whose talents are more artisanal than academic are often better off getting a job or vocational training than seeking a degree that guarantees them student loan debt but not a job.

College and university administrators are not used to being disciplined by market forces. For years, they thought they were above all that.

Many got into the habit of producing a product that didn’t serve their consumers’ interests well. In a prosperous and growing economy, there seems to be no penalty for doing so.

In more straitened circumstances, they are discovering that, sooner or later, markets work. Their old business model is no longer working.

Colleges and universities have been doing a good job of meeting their administrators’ needs. Now, in the new normal economy, they’re scrambling to serve society’s needs, as well.

Who are the war criminals in Syria?

Recently, several polls came out assessing U.S. public opinion on intervention in Syria.

According to the Huffington Post poll, Americans oppose U.S. air strikes on Syria by 3-to-1. They oppose sending arms to the rebels by 4-to-1. They oppose putting U.S. ground troops into Syria by 14-to1. Democrats, Republicans and independents are all against getting involved in that civil war that has produced 1.2 million refugees and 70,000 dead.

A CBS/New York Times poll found that by 62-to-24 Americans want to stay out of the Syrian war.

But the numbers shift when the public is asked if it would make a difference if the Syrian regime used poison gas. In that case, opposition to U.S. intervention drops to 44-to-27 in Reuters/Ipsos.

Yet on the Sunday talk shows and cable news, the hawks are over-represented. To have a senator call for arming the rebels and U.S. air strikes is a better ratings “get” than to have on a senator who wants to stay out of the war.

In that same CBS poll, however, the 10 percent of all Americans who say they

follow the Syrian situation closely were evenly divided, 47to-48, on whether to Pat intervene.

The porBuchanan trait of Columnist America that emerges is of a nation not overly interested in what is going on in Syria, but which overwhelmingly wants to stay out of the war.

But it is also a nation whose foreign policy elites are far more interventionist and far more supportive of sending weapons to the rebels and using U.S. air power.

From these polls, it is hard not to escape the conclusion that the Beltway elites who shape U.S. foreign policy no longer represent the manifest will of Middle America.

But who is speaking up for the silent majority?

Another story that came out this weekend, smothered by news of Israeli air strikes on Syrian military installations and missile depots, might cool elite enthusiasm — and kill any public desire to intervene.

“Syrian Rebels May Have Used Sarin Gas,” ran the headline in Monday’s New

York Times. Datelined Geneva, the story began: “United Nations human rights investigators have gathered testimony from casualties of Syria’s civil war and medical workers indicating that rebel forces have used the nerve agent sarin, one of the lead investigators said Sunday.”

The U.N. commission has found no evidence that the Syrian army used chemical weapons. But Carla Del Ponte, a former Swiss attorney general and a commission member, stated: “Our investigators have been in neighboring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals, and according to their report of last week, which I have seen, there are strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof of the use of sarin gas, from the way the victims were treated.

This was use on the part of the opposition, the rebels.”

In short, the war criminals may be the people on whose behalf we are supposed to intervene. And if it was the rebels who used sarin gas, and not the forces of President Bashar Assad, more than a few questions arise that need answering.

For just two weeks ago, the White House informed

Congress: “Our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin.”

A clamor then arose demanding Obama make good on his threat that the Syrian regime’s use of poison gas would cross a “red line” and be a “game changer,” calling forth “enormous consequences.”

If the Syrian military did not use sarin, but the rebels did, who in the U.S. intelligence community blew this one? From whom did U.S. agencies get their evidence that sarin had been used by Damascus? Were we almost suckered by someone’s latest lies about weapons of mass destruction into fighting yet another unnecessary war?

If Assad’s use of sarin should call forth U.S. air strikes, ought not the use of sarin by the rebels, if confirmed, cause this country to wash its hands of those war criminals?

IRS knew tea party targeted in 2011 WASHINGTON — Senior Internal Revenue Service officials knew agents were targeting tea party groups as early as 2011, according to a draft of an inspector general’s report obtained by The Associated Press that seemingly contradicts public statements by the IRS commissioner.

The IRS apologized Friday for what it acknowledged was “inappropriate” targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. The agency blamed low-level employees, saying no highlevel officials were aware.

But on June 29, 2011, Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, learned at a meeting that groups were being targeted, according to the watchdog’s report. At the meeting, she was told that groups with “Tea Party,” ‘‘Patriot” or “9/12 Project” in their names were being flagged for additional and often burdensome scrutiny, the report says.

The 9-12 Project is a group started by conservative TV personality Glenn Beck.

Lerner instructed agents to change the criteria for flagging groups “immediately,” the report says.

The Treasury Department’s inspector general for tax administration is expected to release the results of a nearly yearlong investigation in the coming week. The AP obtained part of the draft report, which has been shared

with congressional aides.

Among the other revelations, on Aug. 4, 2011, staffers in the IRS’ Rulings and Agreements office “held a meeting with chief counsel so that everyone would have the latest information on the issue.”

On Jan, 25, 2012, the criteria for flagging suspect groups was changed to, “political action type organizations involved in limiting/expanding Government, educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, social economic reform/movement,” the report says.

While this was happening, several committees in Congress were writing numerous letters IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman to express concern because tea party groups were complaining of IRS harassment.

DNA shows kidnap suspect fathered girl CLEVELAND — As relatives of the Cleveland kidnapping and rape suspect recounted claims of his unnerving paranoia and violent outbursts, DNA testing confirmed the man accused of holding three women captive for nearly a decade is the father of a 6-year-old girl who also escaped from the house.

Ariel Castro, charged with rape and kidnapping, remained jailed Friday under a suicide watch on $8 million bond while prosecutors weighed more charges, including some that might carry the death penalty.

Public defender Kathleen Demetz, who said she is acting as Castro’s adviser while he awaits a full-time attorney, said Friday she can’t speak to his guilt or innocence and said only

that she advised him not to talk to reporters.

But those who know the 52-year-old Castro are speaking up, saying he was often angry, paranoid and prone to violent outbursts against the now-dead mother of his adult children. He frequently beat her, played bizarre psychological games and locked her indoors, they said.

The stories, repeated in separate interviews with The Associated Press by members of Castro’s extended family, have surprised people who knew him as a musician who played bass in several bands around Cleveland the last two decades.

Confusing ordeal of recovery begins now Year after year, the clock ticked by and the calendar marched forward, carrying the three women further from the real world and pulling them deeper into an isolated nightmare.

Now, for the women freed from captivity inside a Cleveland house, the ordeal is not over. Next comes recovery - from sexual abuse and their sudden, jarring re-entry into a world much different from the one they were snatched from a decade ago.

Therapists say that with extensive treatment and support, healing is likely for the women, who were 14, 16 and 21 when they were abducted. But it is often a long and difficult process.

“It’s sort of like coming out of a coma,” says Dr. Barbara Greenberg, a psychologist who specializes in treating abused teenagers. “It’s a very isolating and bewildering experience.”

MDOC: Decrease in parole is hurting budget JACKSON — Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps says the prison system faces a budget crunch, partly because the Parole Board releases fewer inmates these days.

But the Parole Board chairman, Malcolm McMillin, says it’s not his job to worry about Epps’ budget.

McMillin said decisions about parole are strictly up to the five-member Parole Board, which he has led since Gov. Phil Bryant appointed him to the post in January 2012. He said he sees no need to meet with Epps to talk about the prisons’ financial condition.

“As far as the Department of Corrections goes, I think it is up to the commissioner to be concerned as to whether or not his budget is balanced and whether he has enough money to operate is between (him) and the Legislature,” said McMillin, a former Hinds County sheriff.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that Epps sent McMillin a letter last month requesting a meeting because he wants McMillin to understand how the Parole Board’s actions affect the Mississippi Department of Corrections Budget.

Epps compared two 10-month periods. He said 47.8 percent of eligible inmates were paroled from March to December 2011.

From May 2012 to this past February, the board paroled 35.5 percent of those eligible.

Epps said with 539 fewer inmates released, the prison system’s cost was more than $8 million.

Evers-Williams speaks at Ole Miss OXFORD — Civil rights leader Myrlie EversWilliams told graduates at the University of Mississippi on Saturday they have the power “to do what is right, to do what is just” and make the world a better place.

“I believe in you, and I hope you believe in yourselves, too,” Evers-Williams said during a commencement ceremony on the university’s main campus in Oxford. “Soar! Not only for yourselves, nor just for the betterment of Mississippi, but for betterment of all mankind. Soar, and be free.”

Evers-Williams, a Vicksburg native, told graduates to work not only for themselves but also for the betterment of Mississippi and all mankind.

She was presented with the University of Mississippi Humanitarian Award. This was only the third time the award has been given. It went to philanthropists Jim and Sally Barksdale in 2001 and to former Gov. William Winter and his wife, Elise, in 2003.

Evers-Williams’ first husband, Medgar Evers, was denied admission to the University of Mississippi law school in 1954, when the state’s education system was still segregated.

He worked as field secretary of the Mississippi NAACP and was assassinated outside the family’s Jackson home in June 1963.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones told Evers-Williams that her husband’s denial of admission to the law school “was an expression of institutionalized injustice in this university, this state and this nation.”

“As we recognize the two of you today we offer our regret and apology for that injustice to you, your family and to countless others,” Jones said. “We are grateful for your sacrifice and for your remarkable lives.”

Governor Bryant speaks at USM HATTIESBURG — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant told graduates at his alma mater that he wants them to “rise up and do great things.”

Bryant spoke Friday during two commencement ceremonies at the University of Southern Mississippi’s main campus in Hattiesburg.

The Republican has been governor since January 2012. He is a 1977 graduate of USM, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Bryant said Mississippi has overcome great adversity, from the Civil War through Hurricane Katrina and even through the F-4 tornado that caused damage in Hattiesburg and the surrounding area in February.

“We could have stayed down, but we decided to get up,” Bryant said of the state. “Graduates, rise up and do great things.”

USM researchers have helped attract industry to the state, the governor said.

46 finishing drug court program SUMMIT — The chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, Bill Waller Jr., is speaking Monday at a drug court graduation ceremony in Summit.

A Supreme Court news release says drug courts around the state seek to rehabilitate people through treatment and supervision. Participants face drug testing and frequent court appearances. They can stay out of jail and be employed.

But if they fail to remain drug-free, they could be locked up.

Forty-six people are expected to graduate from the program in the 14th Circuit, which includes Lincoln, Pike and Walthall counties.

The 14th Circuit has the oldest drug court in Mississippi. It started in 1999.

Monday’s ceremony is set for 2 p.m. at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit. Â

Ex-officer indicted in crash that killed 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Memphis, Tenn., police officer who was involved in a fatal crash that killed two Mississippi residents has been indicted.

The Commercial Appeal reports that the former officer, 24-yearold Alex Beard, is charged with vehicular manslaughter in the Aug. 26 crash that killed 54-year-old Delores Epps and 13-year-old Mackala Epps.

Beard was responding to a call in his marked police car on Aug. 26 when he struck the passenger side of a 1996 Mercury Mystique that was trying to turn left.

He did not have his lights or sirens activated when the crash occurred.

The department fired him afterward for violating policies related to responding to calls and personal conduct.

The mother and daughter were visiting the area from Senatobia, Miss., for a relative’s 50th birthday party.

PEARL — A food service company is paying an $18,000 civil fine for dumping wastewater into Jackson’s sewer system for 11 years without a permit.

Valley Services agreed in March to pay the fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

An order published by the department says the company’s Pearl facility has been discharging wastewater since 2001.

Jackson’s sewer system extends to a number of Rankin County locations.

After regulators notified Valley Services last year, the company was issued a permit in January.

Valley Services is a unit of TrustHouse Services Group, based in Charlotte, N.C. Â

Library of Congress panel leader named JACKSON — U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper has been named chairman of the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress.

The Mississippi Republican has served on the panel since 2009 and was named its leader this past week.

The committee has members from both the House and the Senate.

It oversees operations of the Library of Congress and management of the congressional art collection and the U.S. Botanic Garden.

Harper says in a news release that the Library of Congress benefits all citizens by preserving the United States’ rich heritage and promoting American ingenuity. Â

Farm Mama, a hardworking woman of faith ‘A Hug

“Son, accept what the Lord gives,” Mama said, as I stared glumly at the plate of food she placed before me.

All I could think of was the cotton crop wasting away in our rain-soaked fields. In September, we started harvesting our weakest land, and the yield averaged over two bales per acre. My brother picked it, I ginned it, and Dad oversaw the whole operation. With 50 crops behind him, he was certain we were destined to enjoy our best year ever.

Then, the rains came.

By the time we finished gathering that crop — well into a cold, dreary February — the yield was down to one and a quar-

ter bales per acre, and the cotton’s quality wouldn’t have made good mops.

Somehow, we stayed in business, but still, bad weather seemed determined to put us in the unemployment lines.

Spring planting was piecemeal — under anything but ideal conditions. As always, Mama’s unflinching optimism strengthened me: “Son, when a year starts off this bad, it’s bound to end up good.” We made one of our finest crops ever. I should never have doubted her.

Mama was a dynamo, a tireless wife, mother, homemaker, gardener, artist and devout Christian. We six children often took her for granted, but that never dimmed her zest for caring for us.

Her days were longer than those of anyone else on that sprawling cotton plantation. Every night, she worked long after we’d gone to bed, and hours before we rolled over the first time, she was up, washing, ironing and cooking. When she slept, I don’t know. And if one of us children came down sick, it was certain she never closed an eye until the crisis was over.

Her parents were immigrant sharecroppers, and except on Sundays and schooldays, she and her siblings left the breakfast table for a long day’s work when their father uttered that universal farm expression: “Time to go to the field.”

Despite the Great Depression, Mama’s family prospered. They were

industrious, self-reliant and self-sufficient. Everything they needed was either grown or made by hand, and Mama often commented they didn’t even know a depression was going on. They were proud, hard-working, Christian people and wouldn’t have taken welfare had it been offered to them. Making the American dream come true, they rose from sharecroppers to landowners.

Grandfather died and left his family a debt-free farm.

The devastating illness of Mama’s last years tested her faith and courage more than anything she’d ever endured. Yet, this woman, always a mother first, never thought of herself, only us. Daily, she suffered excruciating

pain, nausea and vertigo, but never complained.

She took what the Lord gave, certain of what He would give in the next life.

A line from a John Milton poem reads, “Who best bear His mild yoke, they serve Him best.”

Mama knew that. She served her family, she served her Maker, and long years ago, she joined Him. Every day, I love and miss you, Farm Mama.

Moms have a unique ability to impart essential wisdom. Unfortunately, most of us were too young to really appreciate their value.

■ You have no limitations. The whole world is open to you. Your future is ahead of you. You can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. It’s OK to dream.

■ Be nice to your friends and they will be nice to you.

tunities will be limited.

Don’t drop out of school.

The more you learn, the more you benefit.

■ Sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you.

■ It doesn’t matter what other people say.

Don’t allow others to upset you. There will always be mean people.

Don’t pay attention to them.

■ Don’t waste your time.

■ Time goes by very fast. Don’t wait to pursue your dreams.

■ Be thankful for what you have.

■ There are many who are not as fortunate as you. Be grateful for your home and family.

It doesn’t matter what someone else has.

■ Don’t complain.

■ Whining is annoying.

If you have something to say, say it. If you complain all the time, no one will want to listen to you.

Front Porch Storytelling Festival offers barbecue, bragging

FLORENCE, Ala. — “If history were taught in the form of stories,” British author and poet Rudyard Kipling once wrote, “it would never be forgotten.”

The University of North Alabama celebrates the rich, colorful, age-old tradition of “tale-telling” and “yarn-spinning” as the third annual UNA Front Porch Storytelling Festival takes place Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, on the UNA campus.

“The front porch we fondly remember – or imagine – as a place to gather and listen to stories isn’t necessarily a physical place,” noted festival chair Debbie Chaffin, UNA’s director of educational technology services.

“Our first two festivals were held outside in our beautiful Memorial Amphitheatre,” Chaffin explained, “but Alabama in May can get very warm – so this year we’re moving inside for telling during the day.”

All daytime activities – showcasing a world-class

array of guest storytellers starting at 9 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday – will be presented in the Performance Center on the top floor of the Guillot University Center. The “Olios” – collections of varied selections by all the guest storytellers – will still take place at the Amphitheatre at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

“The Shoals is wellknown for presenting firstclass festivals and cultural events,” Chaffin remarked.

“We have the W.C. Handy Music Festival, the Helen Keller Festival, the Alabama Renaissance Faire and so many other wonderful events that offer ideal entertainment for the entire family.

“Our Front Porch Storytelling Festival coincides with another major festival, Arts Alive, which takes place the same weekend in downtown Florence,” she added. “It’s a natural fit for both events – they complement one another so well.”

This year’s Front Porch Storytelling Festival will feature Alabama native, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and University of

Alabama writing professor Rick Bragg (“All Over But the Shoutin,’” “Ava’s Man”) as special guest teller. The lineup also includes nationally renowned storytellers Donald Davis, Diane Ferlate, Dolores Hydock, Bil Lepp and Barbara McBride-Smith.

This year’s festival will also feature a special memorial tribute to the university’s own Dr. Bill Foster, longtime chair of the UNA Department of English and a multi-talented storyteller, actor, writer, musician, linguist, folklorist and on-stage host of the first two Front Porch festivals. Foster’s daughter Melissa – who performed alongside her father in the award-winning Foster Family String Band – will host this year’s festival.

“Dr. Foster was the heart of our storytelling festival and one of its biggest champions,” Chaffin observed. “We were so sad to lose him in September of 2012, and during our opening ceremonies we plan to pay tribute to the man who was our inspiration in so many ways. Dr. Foster was a beloved fig-

Wall of Courage Roger Myers 1948-2010

On April 26, 2010 Roger lost his very courageous 8-month battle with cancer.

He is remembered always by his wife, Sandra and two children Jose and Annie

Amy Caldwell is a survivor or breast cancer. She was diagnose in 2007 and has been cancer-free since surgeries that same year. Amy is honored by her daughter Kate and son-in-law Joseph.

“She has been a source of encouragement for others dealing with cancer.

She’s truly a blessing to others.”

Mark Anderson 1975-2008 Mark died January 16, 2008 from cancer. he was born June 19, 1975. He was married to Holly Martin Anderson for two years.

STARKVILLE — Planting the right trees in the best locations is a good investment that can also pay dividends in energy savings for home and business owners.

Bob Brzuszek, associate professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture, said planting trees that block the summer sun on the south and west sides of buildings and roofs can substantially reduce airconditioning costs. “Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy have determined that a few well-placed trees can save an average-sized household up to $250 in utility bills per year,�

Brzuszek said. “They also increase property resale value between 10 and 15 percent.�

Businesses that provide attractive entries or green space see more foot traffic and income revenues, he said. “Not only do trees provide substantial cost savings, but they also provide visual screens from adjoining properties, prevent soil erosion, improve air quality, provide important wildlife food

and habitat, and provide pleasant settings for the community,�

Brzuszek said.

Brian Templeton, Extension associate in landscape architecture, said many consumers think about planting trees in the spring, and garden centers and plant outlets stock up on a variety of trees to accommodate shoppers. “Late fall and winter are the optimum times for planting trees in Mississippi, but they can be planted in spring if supplemental water is given during dry periods,� Templeton said.

He urged customers to do some research before purchasing trees. “Customers often ask for fast-growing trees such as willow and river birch, but these quick growers tend to be weakwooded and often suffer damage in wind or ice storms,� Templeton said.

Trees with specific ornamental characteristics like profuse blooms or good fall color, such as Bradford pear and sugar maple, also suffer from short lives and weak wood. “Trees such as red ma-

Old Waverly Golf Club has had huge economic impact

WEST POINT — The golf course at Old Waverly in West Point has consistently been recognized as one of the best in the nation.

What started as a dream 30 years ago has become one of Mississippi's unique treasures.

Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point marks its 25th anniversary this year.

There is a long list of things to celebrate.

Near the top will be what introduced Old Waverly to the rest of the world — the 1999 U.S. Women's Open.

It's the only professional major tournament Mississippi has hosted, and is still considered one of the biggest sporting events to ever happen here.

Media from more than 100 countries covered it.

Nearly 130,000 spectators watched it, which is the second highest attendance in the Open's history. “After it was over, we received a number of letters from different organizations commenting on the wonderful Southern hospitality,� said former West Point Mayor Kenny Dill, who was in office during the tournament. “It really made a difference in some people's attitudes about Mississippi.�

The Open's economic impact on West Point and the Golden Triangle was estimated at $15 million, representing one of the biggest financial boosts a single event has had on the state.

It began with a dream.

In the early 1980s, former Bryan Foods CEO George Bryan wanted to build a championship golf course. Bryan's original idea was for the course to be part of a state park connected to Waverley Mansion east of West Point in Clay County. The Legislature funded a feasibility study, but that's as far as it got. Lawmakers eventually decided that the state's budget was too thin for the project, which would have been one of a series of golf courses at state parks.

Bryan decided then the course would be private. He rounded up 30

founders, each of whom purchased a membership, and hired Jerry Pate and Bob Cupp to design the course on a site east of the city limits that had natural rolling hills and existing lakes dotted with decades-old evergreens. “From the beginning, Old Waverly was developed as a regional club,�

Bryan said. “We built cottages for groups to come stay and play golf for the weekend before we built the clubhouse.�

Growing the club would require a membership that reached beyond the Golden Triangle.

So Bryan targeted an area within a 200-mile radius of the club and started recruiting members. Eventually, the membership recruitment area grew, and Old Waverly now has members from 22 states and several foreign countries. Some of the more famous names on the membership rolls include Jerry Rice, Brett Favre, Archie Manning and former Mississippi State tight end and NFL vet Reggie Kelly, who's from nearby Aberdeen.

Templeton said.

While a number of trees can be grown in Mississippi, it is best to select trees that are drought tolerant, can handle the state’s temperature extremes, and are not prone to serious insect or disease problems.

Many native trees are long-lived and hardy species. These include Southern magnolia, live oak, red oak, bald cypress, American holly, swamp chestnut oak, nuttall oak, willow oak, deciduous holly, yaupon holly, Eastern red cedar, black gum, redbud, hawthorn and wax myrtle. “Exotic species that do well in our area include crape myrtle, dawn redwood, gingko, Chinese elm, amelanchier, Kousa dogwood and saucer magnolia,� Templeton said.

Brzuszek said it is important to place trees carefully. Avoid planting them underneath or near overhead utility wires and building rooflines because that may cause future problems. Call Mississippi One-Call at (800)

Large trees need a large area for their roots to grow and ideally should be planted at least 30 feet from foundations and pavement.

Mississippi’s soils can range widely in moisture content and from acid to alkaline conditions. A soil test done by the Mississippi State University Extension Service’s Soil Testing Laboratory can provide valuable information on whether a soil type is suited for a particular tree. Man explores way his gift can keep on giving DEAR ABBY: My partner and I have been together 23 years and his parents have embraced me as one of their own. A few years ago, we bought his mother a beautiful diamond cocktail ring for Mother’s Day. She’s now 84, and when she passes on, I’d like that ring back to have it turned into a ring for my partner. It’s a gesture I’m sure would please him, and I hope his mother as well.

I believe she’s leaving her jewelry to her granddaughter, which is fine. But this particular ring will mean so Abigail much if I turn it into a ring for Van Buren her son.

Would it be Dear Abby tacky for me to request this of Mom if I tell her why? I don’t want to offend anyone, and I know the person who inherits her jewelry will probably pawn or sell it anyway. There’s nothing improper about asking men to participate. The purpose of a shower for a bridal couple (or the expected arrival of a baby) is to celebrate the upcoming event and express good wishes. It’s also a way to give the couple things they’ll need.

I have been married for 25 years and have never had an argument with my mother-in-law. Never! My mother gave me some valuable advice before my wedding that I’d like to pass along. She said, “Always respect the woman who made the man you love.”

I never forgot it, and my MIL has always been welcome in my home for as long as she wishes.

If we had any differences, a re-

spectful dialogue was opened right away -- especially if it concerned our kids’ education.

We have enjoyed shopping, eating, cooking, parties, caring for newborns and family moments together for as long as I can remember. Sadly, she is now frail and can no longer travel as much as she once could.

Shorts NEMCC Softball Tryouts Northeast Mississippi Community College will host tryouts for the Lady Tigers Softball Team for any unsigned 2013 seniors on May 21 at the Booneville City Park. All athletes must be completed with their high school season to participate and all are expected to sign a practice waiver.

Tryout will consist of conditioning, throwing, fielding and hitting as well as base running times and pro agility times. Try Tennis The Northest MS Tennis Association is looking for individuals interested in learning to play tennis or to improve on their skills. Through a grant from the United State Tennis Association, the group is planning several “Try Tennis” events for ages 10-75. Mango Madness 5K Run The Mango Madness 5K will be held on May 18 at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $12 through May 14 and $15 the day of the race. The 5K will be on the Corinth Cross Country Course on Droke Road and over 100 awards will be given out. Pre-registered participants will also receive a t-shirt.

NEMCC Summer Softball Jam Northeast Mississippi Community College and its softball program will host Summer Softball Jam I and Summer Softball Jam II at the Booneville City Park. The first session will be held May 24-25, and the second June 7-8. Ages eligible for the tournament include Fast Pitch 10-U, 12-U, 14-U and 16-U/18-U/High School as well as an 8-U Coach Pitch division. Each team entered is guaranteed four teams, and each division requires four teams to play in the tournament.

Deadlines are May 17 for the first session and June 2 for the second session. Brackets for session one will be drawn May 22 and June 5 for session two. Entry fees are $150 for fast pitch divisions and $100 for doubleelimination Coach Pitch. Candy Classic The 34rd Corinth Candy Classic Tennis Tournament will be held May 28-June 2 at the Corinth High School Tennis Complex. Junior play, a USTA sancitoned event, will be May 28-30 with the adult division scheduled for May 31-June 2. Entries close for the Juniors on Saturday, May 25 at 11:59 p.m., while Adult entries close Wednesday, May 28t at 11:59 p.m.

Registrations are to be submitted on line. Be sure to include your T-shirt size when you register. A court-side lunch will be provided for junior players on opening day. Friday night, the first night of the adult division play, will include a courtside supper for sponsors and patrons. Saturday night there will be a court-side supper for the adult tournament participants.

To participate in the Junior Tournament, participants must be members of the USTA. The Adult Tournament is open to all who wish to enter.

The End Of The Road Corinth’s Lady Warriors fall to Houston’s Game 3 rally

It ended with tears.

The Corinth fast-pitch team needed to win two after dropping their North Half opener to Houston, and an 12-7 Game 2 placed the team one away from a trip to the state finals.

Game 3 proved the downfall, as Houston put together four runs in the first two innings and powered their way to a 17-5 victory.

The defending Class 4A Fastpitch Champions will make another trip to Ridgeland, Miss for the May 17 and 18 finals.

The Warriors took a quick lead in Game 2, Bailee Kramer’s sacrifice fly placed Anna Kayte Webb over home plate Houston tied the game up on their first batter, Audi Dendy smashing a home-run single before three batters retired in order.

Webb placed another run for Corinth, a single for Jamia Kirk’s slide in.

Two walks later, Rebekah Williams reached first with bases loaded, as Webb trotted home for a 4-1 advantage.

A two-run homer for the Hilltoppers came inside the third inning following a double from Alexis McShan.

Chelsea Gates double homer placed Houston one behind Corinth at 4-3, and the War-

riors moved into the bottom of the third for a six run trip.

Three singles on loaded bases, and a triple home-run from Williams claimed the runs and the Warriors added another in the fourth from a single from Stennett Smith.

A double-homer from Mary Kansas Sullivan in the fifth and a single shot by Avery Springer in the sixth brought Houston’s total to 7.

Corinth put in one last score in the sixth inning with Allie Jacob’s hit place Katie Vandiver at home.

After a brief delay, Game 3 action started in favor of Houston.

Gates opened the game with a triple for the Toppers, with Springer and Dendy following to load the bases.

A single from Talaja Echoles brought in two runs, and Houston sat down the Warriors in order to close the first.

Three consecutive bunts loaded bases again, McShan scoring from a double and Gates running in from a wild pitch.

Corinth sat down again in order, and the Lady Toppers capitalized on the moment with a four run third inning to take an 8-0 lead.

Haley Christian provided Corinth’s first hit of the game, a right field single which Colby Cox followed.

With a walk of Smith, Kirk’s single drove in the first run but the Warriors fell in order with Webb, and Bailee Kramer out at home while Cox was tagged on a slide into home plate.

Houston’s day wasn’t done - as a five run fourth inning followed, one which included a grand-slam by Sullivan to make it 13-3.

Two runs made up the fifth inning for the Lady Warriors, Kramer driving in Webb while Vandiver placed Patterson at home.

Those five runs marked the game, as Houston’s Madeline Burdine placed a three-run homer into left field to bring the game at 17-5.

Patterson and Kramer both reached base for the final turn at bat, but a double play on Rebekah Williams and Kramer’s run to second ended the game.

The series loss marks an end to the fast-pitch season for Corinth, who finish as the Division 1-4A Champions and the North Half Runner-Up. The North Half series marks the first time in program history that the fast-pitch team has advanced - Corinth fell in the 2012 playoffs to Houston during the quarter-finals.

The team finishes the season with a 25-7 record, and bids farewell to four senior

members in Stennett Smith, Bailee Kramer, Portia Patterson and Haley Christian.

Christian will continue her softball career at Northeast Mississippi Community College, while Patterson has signed to play with Itawamba Community College.

Aggies take Class 3A quarterfinal series

They did it in two.

After a 5-2 on the road at Mooreville High School on Friday, the Kossuth Aggies baseball team needed one more win to secure their spot as one of the four best in Class 3A. A 7-3 win sealed it up, with Kossuth advancing to the next round for a Thursday, Friday, Saturday series with either fellow Alcorn County team Alcorn Central or 4-3A Division winner Independence High School.

Tyler Mercer logged the win on the pitchers mound for Kossuth, and Josh Whitaker knocked in a home run during the fourth-inning to extend the lead by three.

Jacob Wilcher, Conner Boyer and Reed Mitchell all logged multiple hits for the Aggies, as Mooreville managed seven as a team.

The series win places the Aggies with a 17-11 season record, and improves their post-season streak to a 4-0 run.

Mercer moves to 8-3 for the year, with one game to his credit as a save from the mound.

The Aggies see a road game to open the North Half series if Independence advances, per the rules from the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

Independence logged two runs in the first and the third inning, before topping if off with three runs in the sixth.

ko, but evened up the series at 1-1 with a come-from-behind 3-2 win.

Tishomingo County put in two runs inside the bottom of the sixth and held their advantage to close the game.

The Braves travel to Kosciusko Monday to play the deciding game. The winner advances to a Class 4A North Half round with the Houston Hilltoppers.

Lady Aggies fall in extra innings in quarters

A combined eight hits marked the second game of the Class 3A softball quarterfinals.

After a week of delays, Mooreville and Kossuth set out to finish the series with the Aggies falling in eight innings for a 2-1 final.

Mooreville opened the game on a triple from leadoff hitter Meagan Edmonds, which marked the only hit in the game for either team until the fourth inning.

The Troopers grabbed an-

other one there, Hallie Donald striking a left-field single to reach first.

Donald’s trip to base was short-lived as Madison Switcher threw the runner out at second as Edmonds struck out swinging.

With only two Lady Aggies touching base since the game opener, Mooreville logged another hit in the fifth from a single by Kelsey Minga.

While Minga advanced to third from a two errors, a ground ball to pitcher Carleigh Mills from Erin Jones had the Aggies escaping with

no score in the game.

With Mooreville sitting down in order to open the sixth inning, Madison Hales right field single marked the second hit of the day for the Aggies.

Mooreville’s Miah Edmonds logged another hit in the seventh - the only of either team for the inning - with three batters caught out afterward before Kossuth went down in order.

For extra innings, Summer Cryder took second base for the Troopers and Raena McGregor charted a single to ad-

vance Cryder to second.

Meagan Edmonds triple into right field placed two on the board for Mooreville, as two batters flied out to end the top of the eighth.

Parrish Tice opened the Aggies turn at bat on second base, scoring on a passed ball after pinch-hitter Kristen Devers reached a base on a walk.

Briana Bryan and Hannah Parks both went down on a swing and a line-drive, for Mooreville to capture the series.

Brown is able to vault by using intense concentration on her approach to the pit, counting her steps and listening to coach Derek Smith yell when he tells her to launch. She places an 80-foot strip of dark, artificial turf next to the running lane to create a light/dark contrast she can follow to keep her running in a straight line.

Brown easily cleared her first three jumps at 9-6, 10-0 and 10-6. The problems began when she clipped the bar with her left elbow on her first attempt at 11-0. After missing her next two jumps, Brown ultimately finished eighth among nine competitors.

AUSTIN, Texas — A legally blind 15-year-old pole vaulter cleared three heights at the Texas state championship but failed to win a medal.

Charlotte Brown of rural Emory Rains High School was one of the top qualifiers in girls’ Class 3A with a height of 11 feet, 6 inches. Her best vault of Saturday’s final was 10-6 and she missed on three chances at 11-0 before leaving the track to a standing ovation from several hundred people watching her event.

Brown was born with normal vision but developed problems while an infant. She has no depth perception, sees no color and cannot distinguish shapes.

Her range of vision is similar to looking through a tiny straw.

The winning height was 12-9 She reads Braille and will get a by meet favorite Kally Long of seeing eye dog next month.

She has learned to cope since having her first eye surgery in 2002. The Stricklins took their oldest daughter to Dr. Mike Weeden when her vision got worse.

“We didn’t know what was going on until Dr. Weeden found it, but no one at that time knew what Coats’ Disease was,” said Carolyn.

Weeden immediately sent the family to another optometrist in Jackson, Tenn.

“The doctors knew something was wrong, but they had never dealt with a rare disease like this,” said Jerry.

Dr. David Meyer, a Memphis ophthalmologist, saw the condition while at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Meyer performed the surgery on the left eye of Kayla when she was eight.

“She was virtually blind in her left eye,” said Jerry.

“I can’t make anything out in that eye,” added Kayla.

The disease had caused too much damage in the eye for a vision improvement.

“There was nothing that could be done about the left eye,” added Carolyn. “We just have to watch the right one closely.”

Surgery on her right eye was completed by Dr. David Irvine in 2011.

“She sees better out of that eye now than before,” added her father.

While at school, Kayla sits on the first row or closer to be able to see the board.

She also has the option of copying the notes of other students in class.

“Sometimes when I am sitting in class, I find it hard to see the board,” she said.

“But I do what I have to do.”

Younger sister, Kristen, has also played an important part in helping older

sis. She at times has read books and other assignments to her sibling.

“It has been normal for me helping Kayla,” said Kristen. “I think this disease has molded her into the person she is today.”

Debbie Walker, Special Services Director in Tishomingo County, and former TC counselor Kathy Ward have been a huge plus in helping the senior during her four years at the school.

“Miss Walker was very helpful in making sure Kayla had everything she needed,” said Ward.

Through the special services, the senior was able to use large print textbooks at home along with a reading lamp and optical magnifier. A new pair of reading glasses have also helped the senior in the classroom.

“The books were bigger than the picture books you see on a coffee table,” said Ward. “They were too large to carry back and forth to

The Stricklin family is very appreciative to the kindness and support of the

TC staff in helping Kayla.

“Teachers and counselors have been great,” said Carolyn. “They made things easier for her.”

“Every school needs a counselor like Kathy Ward,” added Jerry.

According to Ward, Kayla has used a strong work ethic to make it in life.

“She has never asked for any special favors,” said Ward. “I never saw her down about her condition … you wouldn’t know she has a disability unless she told you.”

TCHS Assistant Principal Jackie Beals sees that same determination.

“We were sitting at a banquet and Jackie tells me “Kayla proves it’”, said her father. “I looked at him and said proves what? … he said “she proves if a kid wants to make it, they can.’”

Proving it is all Kayla knows.

“Throughout school, I have always wanted to do well,” she said. “When this happened, it didn’t faze me one bit … I was ready whether it was difficult or not and I will continue to do what I have always done, and that’s my best.”

Jerry and Carolyn Stricklin beam with pride on how both of their daughters have dealt with the eye disease.

“I am proud of both of my daughters … I am proud of how hard Kayla has worked and for Kristen for helping her sister,” said Jerry. “This condition is something Carolyn and I think about constantly … it takes an attitude like Kayla has to make it in life.”

Things will be different for Kayla next year. It will be like starting over with her going to college and then to Oxford in a couple of years.

“To a lot of people this would be a curse,” she said.

“To me it’s a blessing in disguise and has made me who I am … God choose me because He knew I could handle it and if I can do it, anyone can do it.”

There was a ruffle of one of her wings and Abe came streaking out of the sky to return to her perch.

She immediately jumped to the ground and hid her head between her carrier’s legs. After the battle it was found she had been hit in the wing but aside from a few clipped feathers she had escaped a dangerous wound.

Over the years it became a common sight for Abe to fly overhead while a battle was raging below.

It was said that just the sight of her was demoralizing to the Confederates and literally hundreds, if not thousands, shot at her though she was never hit again.

A private of the regi-

ment recalled, “I have frequently seen Generals Grant, Sherman, McPherson, Rosencranz, Blair, Logan, and others, when they were passing our regiment, raise their hats as they passed Old Abe, which always brought a cheer from the regiment and then the eagle would spread his wings …”

In the fall of 1864, Old Abe ended her active duty.

The regiment had put in their three years of duty and most of them reenlisted to finish out the war. The men who had chosen to take their discharges returned home and presented Old Abe to Gov. James T. Lewis.

A special “Eagle Apartment” was set aside for

her in the State Capitol building and for the next 17 years she led an active life, making appearances at reunions, exhibitions, and patriotic events.

In February, 1881, a fire broke out in the Capitol and Abe fell desperately ill with smoke inhalation.

On March 26 (a Day to Remember), Abe died in the hands of her handler, George Gilles.

Abe’s remains were stuffed and put on display in the Capitol building and she was lost for good in 1904 when another fire destroyed the building.

Old Abe was gone, but she was still an inspiration to millions of Americans.

You’ve seen her yourself countless times. She

is the emblem on the patch that graces the shoulder of every soldier of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. They carried Old Abe along as they parachuted into Normandy and refused to be captured at Bastogne. She protected the Little Rock Nine, stood firm at Firebase Ripcord, and made her presence known in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 101st has a long list of battle honors, but of all the “Screaming Eagles,” only the original, Old Abe, can claim the Battle of Corinth!

Locals showcase talents in fishing tourneys The fishing on MidSouth lakes and rivers has been nothing short of fantastic and, recently, a few area anglers took full advantage to showcase their fish catching talents â&#x20AC;&#x201D; receiving accolades and lining their pockets with some extra cash, while competing in a couple of big- time fishing tournaments.

Last week, Randy Haynes of Counce, Tenn. finished at the top of the heap in the three-day Ever Start Series Central Division bass tournament held on Pickwick Lake.

His 15 bass over the three-

day affair tipped the scales at 79 pounds and 11 ounces, outdistancDavid ing the runGreen ner-up by nearly four Outdoors pounds.

Haynes led the field from start to finish.

On the first day, Thursday, he brought five bass to the scales that weighed an impressive 33 pounds and one ounce, equaling more than six-anda-half pounds per fish. A

sub-par outing of 19-12 pounds on day two due to rough and blustery conditions allowed competitors to narrow the lead, but he still managed to stave off the rally on Saturday with a bag of fish weighing 26 pounds, 14 ounces.

For his accomplishment, Randy was awarded $30,088 and a fully rigged Ranger bass boat.

Tupelo native and current Killen, Ala. resident Todd Rasberry made a big showing on day one.

He was in second place with 27 pounds, 10 ounces and claimed big-fish honors with a 10-pound,

employed by the late firm of Watson & Harvey for several months. Dr. Harrison is a talented young man and in every respect a first class druggist, and competent prescriptionist, having graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Nashville after four years of diligent study. He has full charge of the prescription department and all prescriptions left at the above named drug store will receive his personal attention.

I have had a cotton picker on the brain over 25 years; have made two models; I am now on my third model which will be a perfect success. This machine will discriminate, gather nothing but cotton; can be put to work when cotton is half matured, pick all that is open and not interfere with the immature bolls; will work in any kind of cotton, large or small, and will do the work of 100 hands, requiring but two hands,

and a pair of horses. As I have not the means to put this machine on the market, I propose to give one-fourth interest in it for money enough to complete the model, procure patent, and build one working machine. A Cabelaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s King Kat Tournament Super Event was held April 26-27 on the waters of the Alabama River near Selma, Ala. The two-day event drew top fishing teams from eight different states to compete for the $10,000 in cash and prizes, plus the opportunity to qualify for the 2013 Cabelaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s King Kat Classic.

The catfish fishing team of David Shipman and Brooke Wilkins from Corinth proved they could take their show on

the road and hold their own against some of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top fishermen.

David and Brooke fished the Millers Ferry area of the river anchored down in 40 feet of water using skipjack as bait to catch their fish.

Shipman and Wilkins narrowly edged out the fifth place team of Joey and Jerry Pounders from Columbus. The Pounders team caught and weighed in two more fish but fell

short of overtaking the Corinth team by only a mere .86 pounds.

The 89.32 pounds of catfish, however, was still good enough collect a not too shabby $700 paycheck.

Conservation camps offer experiences

MISSISSIPPI STATE â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Mississippi State University is offering four different conservation camps in June and July for young people interested in science, outdoors and the environment.

The Conservation Camp: Natural Resources Edition June 9-13 will give young people aged 14 to 18 the chance to learn about ecology, science, techniques and careers associated with managing and conserving Mississippiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wildlife, fish and forests. The five-day, four-night residential camp costs $300 to attend, but siblings can attend at a reduced rate.

The Conservation Camp: Outdoor Recreation and Science Edition June 23-27 immerses participants in archery, canoeing, skeet shooting and other outdoor experiences. Campers can get certified in Hunterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education and Boater Safety and learn about Mississippiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diverse wildlife in this five-day, four-night residential camp. The camp is designed for 12- to 16-year-olds and costs $300 to attend. Additional siblings can register at a reduced rate.

The July 7-11 Conservation Camp: Extreme Science Edition is a five-day, four-night residential camp that gives

14- to 18-year-olds a sneak peak at college science courses. Topics may include soils, mammalogy, ornithology, forest ecology and wildlife pathology.

The $300 fee is reduced for siblings attending the same camp.

Conservation Camp: Day Camp Edition for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders is offered July 22-26. This camp is held at MSU each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and costs $20 per person.

Students learn about the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural ecosystems, experience real-world science and explore the outdoors.

To apply, each student must write at least 100 words expressing his or her interest in the experience and send it to Leslie Burger, director of the camps.

She attended Northeast Mississippi Community College where she was a member of the Lady Tiger basketball team, Phi Theta Kappa, received the Tiger Award and was a maid of the 2011 Homecoming court.

She is a 2013 graduate of Blue Mountain College receiving a B.S. degree in biology and graduating with honors. While attending Blue Mountain College, she was a member of the ladies basketball team, received

scholar athlete awards each year, and a member of Beta Beta Beta Honor Society. She will enter the medical technology program at North Mississippi Medical Center this fall.

The prospective groom is the grandson of Mrs. Mavis Heard of New Albany and the late Jimmy Heard.

Mr. Heard is a 2008 graduate of Ingomar High School where he was a member of the varsity men’s basketball and baseball teams. Mr. Ingomar High School and an honor student. He is a 2013 graduate of Blue Mountain College where he was a member of the men’s basketball team for three years. He received a B.S. degree in history. He is currently an assistant basketball and baseball coach at Ingomar High School.

TUPELO, MS — The Natchez Trace Parkway will celebrate 75 years as a national park on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The free, family-oriented event will feature live music, dozens of exhibitors and historical personas, dignitaries, children’s activities, classic cars and much more.

Festivities will be held at the Parkway Visitor Center, located just north of Tupelo on the Natchez Trace Parkway at milepost 266.

Local car enthusiasts will present over 80 classic vehicles between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m., with the National Anthem to be sung by renowned mezzo-soprano Dr. Lester Senter. Dignitaries will begin speaking at 10:30 a.m. All other activities will begin at 11 a.m.

The celebration will include people dressed as historical characters important to the Trace, including a “Kaintuck,” Meriwether Lewis, a War of 1812 soldier, a Confederate soldier, and a Union soldier from the United States Colored Troops.

Student artwork featured The focus on youthful creativity continues at the art gallery this month with a collection of works

by Alcorn Central High School students. The students’ instructor, Crystal Bryde, is also exhibiting a selection of works. The exhibit will run through May 18.

The ACHS student work was created primarily by 11th- and 12th grade students and includes some perspective pieces, banner-shaped tributes to various artists and some dimensional works.

Bryde’s selections consist primarily of paintings of antebellum homes such as Dunleith in Natchez and McRaven in Vicksburg that she has visited. The back wall of the gallery will feature works entered in the QUEST district-wide art competition by 2ndthrough 6th-graders at Kossuth, Biggersville, Alcorn Central and Rienzi.

Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Karaoke/dance night VFW Post No. 3962 hosts a Karaoke Night every Friday at the post on Purdy School Rd. in Corinth. Karaoke begins at 8 p.m. with music by D.J. Lanny Cox. Lanny Cox also provides music at the VFW on Saturday Dance Night which begins at 8 p.m.

Prayer breakfast The American Legion Post 6 is hosting a prayer breakfast every Wednesday at 7 a.m.

Sausage, biscuits and coffee will be served. A devotional will be given by a different speaker each Wednesday. The breakfasts are at the American Legion Building on Tate St. in Corinth.
