... and the winner is ... Junior Auxiliary honors Mary Dee Kemp as Outstanding Citizen BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
An educator praised for her big heart and Southern charm is the Junior Auxiliary of Corinth’s Outstanding Citizen of 2013. Mary Dee Kemp, an educator for more than 30 years, was honored with the title Saturday evening at the annual Charity Ball. Supporters of her nomination for the honor cited her dedication to others both in and out of the classroom through the years. “I am always amazed that she can be so devoted to so many people and organizations,” Hulene King wrote in support of Kemp’s nomination. A Biggersville native, Kemp briefly taught school at Farmington in the 1970s before teaching in Memphis schools. She later spent more than 20 years with the Alcorn School District, where she taught junior high history. “She inspired many young people with a love of history,”
wrote Rosemary Fisher. “While at Central, she began the Geography Bees for her students, taking them to county and state contests.” At First Presbyterian Church, Kemp drove the launch of the Presbyterian Day School in 1973, a program that continues today, and formed The Friendship Class for special-needs adults, a program that also continues. The Friendship group has sessions in the spring and fall to give those individuals a variety of enrichment and recreational activities. “One can see and feel the love within the group,” wrote Margaret Anne Orr. “Mary Dee is a hero to these students and also to their parents. I am thankful every day for her leadership with this group.” The nomination of Kemp also noted her involvement in establishing the Artist Series, which brought professional musicians, dancers and drama to the local theatre. She helped to form Horizon, a support
organization for the city and county school districts, and has led Girl Scout troops. Kemp has been one of the key players in bringing back a regular home tour along with an art auction to benefit efforts to restore the VerandahCurlee House. Kemp is also an avid tennis player. “Her love for tennis has drawn many onto the courts,” wrote Orr. “One spring she chose not to play on her team but to get a group of beginners out and be their captain. She inspired this group of Corinth’s younger ladies, and they continue to play and enjoy the sport.” Judy Smelser praised her ability to raise the bar and inspire others to try new things. “If you were to describe her in three words, they would be ‘determined, disciplined and dedicated,’” she wrote. “Her involvement in the community spans her entire life.” With husband Sam, Kemp
has three children — Jan Kaplan, Julie Miller and Jodi McNeese — and eight grandchil-

She and her husband, Jack, traveled to Australia on Feb. 11 and were back the following week after going through training. “I had to talk it over with my mother (Ann Whitfield) first

Legendary civil rights icon James Meredith visits Corinth BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com
Legendary civil rights icon James Meredith has reached an age when many are content to relax and assess how their lifetime was spent, but the feisty hero of desegregation is still fighting the good fight, still striving to help black people fulfill their full potential. Meredith’s name was entered into the lexicon of Amer-
ican history in 1962, when the 29-year-old armed forces veteran registered for classes at Ole Miss and became the first black student in a Mississippi university. On Thursday, Meredith spent almost two hours at the Corinth Library speaking to a gathering of about 30 Corinthians and signing copies of his newest book, “A Message from God: A Memoir and Challenge
for America.” The Kosciusko-born Meredith – who will turn 80 in June – has never considered himself part of the civil rights movement, or a tool of any other group, for that matter. Instead, he sees himself as a warrior, one man waging battle for his people against white supremacy and an unfair, corrupt and often downright evil system.

God’s Plan for Our Time Looking spry in a red Ole Miss baseball cap and matching polo shirt over white slacks, Meredith was full of energy and conviction when he stepped to the podium. He talked for almost an hour about his book and his home state – delineating how far Mississippians have come from the days of segregation
and Jim Crow, and how far they still have to go. Meredith’s words made it known that the man truly loves Mississippi – but it is the affection of an old lover who loves perhaps even more deeply, in spite of his partner’s flaws and shortcomings that he sees all too clear. “I ardently think that we’ve Please see MEREDITH | 2A

“We are still staying in Corinth and I don’t know when we will go from here. I am as well satisfied here as I would be any where that I could be placed away from home. In fact I am very well satisfied and feel contented with the lot I am placed in.” Pvt. Hiram Matthews, 66th Indiana Infantry.
