Gann named chair of state board of education Staff reports

A former teacher, principal, and school superintendent can now add chairman of the Mississippi Board of Education to his long list of education experience. Dr. O. Wayne Gann, of Corinth was elected Friday by State Board members to lead the Mississippi Board of Education for the next year. Board members also chose River Hills Bank Chairman Howell Gage as vice chairman. “It’s an honor to be selected as chairman of the Mississippi Board of Education and I look

forward to working with the entire education community to improve the academic achievement of our students,” said Gann. “We will continue to focus on our lowest performing Dr. O. Wayne schools by Gann providing the technical assistance needed to help them improve, while also

providing opportunities to better our highest performing schools.” Dr. Gann was appointed to the State Board in 2006 by then Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck. He retired after serving 27 years as superintendent of Corinth Public Schools. He has worked as a teacher and principal in the Union County and New Albany public school systems. Dr. Gann attended Itawamba Community College and holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Mississippi. Gage, of Vicksburg was ap-

pointed to the Mississippi Board of Education in 2004 by then Gov. Haley Barbour to serve an unexpired term and reappointed in 2007. He has served as the chairman of River Hills Bank in Vicksburg for 13 years. Gage also serves as chairman of the Vicksburg Medical Foundation and past chairman of the River Regional Medical Center Board of Directors. Gage is a former chairman to the Vicksburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce and a former advisory board member of the New Orleans branch of the Federal Reserve Bank

of Atlanta. Gage holds a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a master’s degree from Harvard University. “Dr. Gann and Mr. Gage are excellent choices to lead the State Board of Education. They possess outstanding leadership qualities, but more importantly, they are great supporters of public education,” Interim State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lynn House said. “I look forward to working with them to better serve the needs of Mississippi’s students.”

Where She Belongs Box Chapel pastor finds peace in answering the call to ministry BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Ann Ferguson has made it to where she was supposed to be all along. Behind the pulpit. It took 33 years of teaching high school English before the 64 year-old reached the destination, but Ferguson is energized with the task God has called her to do. The licensed local pastor is still settling into the role as the new leader of Box Chapel United Methodist Church — located on County Road 100 near Farmington. “Most of my life I have known that I should be in the ministry,

but like others I came up with excuses,” said the new pastor while sitting at one of the back pews in the church. “After retiring from teaching, I had no more excuses.” The wife, of 42 years to husband Boyd, started her training in Tennessee before receiving a call from a district superintendent about an interest in a church in Mississippi. As a local licensed pastor Ferguson can “preach, baptize and marry,” she just isn’t ordained. Project Attention students present fairy tale play BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The kids of Project Attention are taking Mother Goose to court. Student’s of the center’s summer enrichment program will take the stage for the play at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the American Legion building on Johns Street. Some 50 children participated in the center’s summer program and have been preparing to present Mary Hearnton’s play, “Mother Goose Goes to Court.” The exercise is designed to get them thinking about what they’ve read and to give them some experience in front of an audience.

“Many of the nursery rhymes they have heard, and they didn’t really know what they meant,” said Hearnton, a retired educator who spent 35 years in the classrooms of Detroit. “They are taking a second look at them. It’s helping them to understand what Mother Goose was saying.” The kids are hauling Mother Goose to court on child abuse, kidnapping and other charges based on the events in her tales. By involving the children in a play, “They are learning selfconfidence. They are learning how to perform and speak loudly to an audience,” said
