Area state parks offer an opportunity to put on the hiking boots and do something different on New Year’s Day. The annual First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative among state parks to encourage people to get outdoors. The hikes are free and guided. The hike is a highlight of the season at Pickwick Landing State Park, where this year’s trek will begin at 2 p.m. at Trailhead near Cabin #9. “Our First Day Hikes are our most popular annual guided event statewide,” said Brock Hill, deputy commissioner for parks and conservation. “It’s a great way to start your New Year’s resolutions off right and see the wonder of our state during this beautiful season.” Along with the whole family, friendly dogs on a leash are welcome on the Pickwick hike, which is set to last an hour. For a longer excursion, Big Hill Pond State Park in southwest McNairy County offers a 5-mile Winter Wildlife Hike beginning at 3 p.m. and lasting until 6 p.m. It will start at the Turkey Call Trailhead leading to the boardwalk. Hikers might spy a deer, turkey, bobcat, duck or even a wild pig. The hikers will next go to the observation tower and watch the waterfowl fly in to the Travis McNatt Lake to roost. The park will serve hot chocolate

Luke Doehner moved to Corinth from his native Baltimore 20 years ago. “I’ve always loved the town and the people,” he said. Known as Chef Luke for his culinary skills at The General’s Quarters — a bed and breakfast inn located in a historic residence on the edge of downtown Corinth — Doehner also spends between 60 and 70 hours each week at the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter, where he is operations manager alongside his wife, Volunteer Shelter Director Charlotte. Doehner enjoys spending time with their three dogs — a blue heeler named Niblit, a chihuahua mix named Sally and the newest addition to the family, a terrier and Rottweiler mix that goes by the name of Shadow. “All three came from the Shelter, and we raised them from puppies,” said Doehner.
