Musician stages Electrofest BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com
Corinth’s first showcase of experimental and electronic music is coming this weekend. Electrofest 2012 begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the American Legion Post 6 building on South Tate Street. “When lots of people hear you say ‘electronic music’ they think about a rave — and we’ve got heavy dance music for anybody who wants to come out and dance — but we’ve also got all different styles of music for people to come out and enjoy,” said concert organizer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Ricketts. In addition to Ricketts’ own eclectic musical style, the show will feature a range of musically diverse bands from around the area, including: Argiflex, Kofaxx, Not Sure, Tonic, SO DUMB and an opening acoustic set by Witt Lucas. “We want people to come and dance, and we also want to attract music fans who are interested in hearing something different, something they’re not used to hearing,” the organizer Please see ELECTROFEST | 2A

Thieves target Dollar General Culprits chain safe, drag through storefront BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
KOSSUTH — Area law enforcement agencies are working together to solve the recent break-ins of three Dollar General stores. The latest took place on Christmas Eve at the store on Highway 2 in Kossuth. Stores in Eastview, Tenn., and the community of Thaxton in Pontotoc County have also taken place over the past three weeks. Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Reggie Anderson believes the local crime is related to the one in Pontotoc County. “In both incidents, a white pickup has been mentioned and there were two male subjects,” said Anderson. 911 received an alarm call from the Kossuth store at 3:05 a.m. on Dec. 24. When Alcorn County deputies Mike Billingsley and Scott Dalton arrived, they found the front doors open and someone had been in the store, according to Anderson.

Local authorities believe the break-in of this Dollar General store in Pontotoc County is related to a crime committed in Kossuth on Christmas Eve. Another Dollar General store was hit in Eastview, Tenn. “It appeared no merchandise was missing,” said the investigator. “Evidence shows that two
white subjects entered the front of the store and pulled the safe out with some type of logging
chain.” The safe, which contained a large amount of cash, was pulled out the front of the store by the vehicle. Significant damage was done to the front of the store. Dollar General wasn’t able to reopen until Thursday afternoon. Individuals with information about the break-in can call the sheriff’s office at 286-5521 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-773TIPS. “Any assistance the public can give would be greatly appreciated,” said Anderson, who is being assisted by investigators Heath Thomas and Tommy Hopkins. The Thaxton crime, which happened Dec. 10 around 3:43 a.m., is very similar to the Kossuth case. According to Pontotoc County Investigator Chris Patterson, two while males pulled up to the front of the store in a white pickup. They Please see BREAK-IN | 2A
Arena readies for some roundball BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
The Crossroads Arena is ready to tip things off. For the ninth consecutive year, the facility will be the host for the Alcorn County Tournament. Games to crown the county's top hoop squads begin Thursday. “I think the tournament is going to be the best one we have had in a while,” said tournament director Jimmy Whitaker. “On the boys side, all four teams are pretty good, and the girls should be really competitive.” The Corinth Warriors and Kossuth Lady Aggies are the tournament's top seeds. Schools voted to move the ACT — which in the past was rotated among the four county schools of Alcorn Central, Biggersville, Corinth and Kossuth — to the multi-purpose arena in 2004. The first tourney was held the following year with a record 3,804 attending. Last year, 3,217 attended the three-day tournament. The

Nobody is ever going to know all the lives he touched.” Dorothy Hopkins, who worked with the council for many years, remembers the day in 1995 when Boyd signed up to become a tutor. It was when the Please see BOYD | 2A
