“Mr. Boatman was very humbled to hear that he had been selected to be honored as the CHS Alumni Association’s Alumnus of the Year,” said Alumni President Callie Emmons.

“Please join us as we recog- Boatman nize him and cheer on the Warriors to victory against the Tishomingo County Braves.”

Boatman will be honored with a ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Corinth High School game against Tishomingo, around 7 p.m. — between the girls and boys varsity games. The Alumni Association will have a table set up in the foyer leading to the gym with light refreshments and T-shirts for sale.

Selected for the honor by the CHS Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Committee, Boatman is the ninth honoree of the award since 2008. Previous honorees include James Price Jr., John Palmer, Dr. Mark Keenum, Judge Neal Biggers, Lanny Griffith, Curtis Wilkie, Sandy Williams and Dr. Thomas Sweat.

Basket Fund tops $3,000 The spirit of giving this Christmas season is alive and well in the Alcorn County area.

Donations are now arriving for the 21st Annual Corinth Rotary Club / Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund.

A $23,000 fund raising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets can be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Crossroads Arena.

The newspaper has received $3,085 in donations so far.

Donations include $25 from Don and Marcia Glisson in honor of the Corinth Library; $50 from Sammy L. and Mary H. Rowsey; $100 from Mason Saint Luke Baptist Church; $150 from Genida Whitfield in memory of Winston Whitfield and Max Hopson; $100 from Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Shipman and family in memory of Ben Shipman; and a $100 anonymous gift in memory of Maggie Windom.

Wendy Talley has been the secretary at Alcorn Central High School for 14 years.

Before that, she worked in the Corinth School System for three years. “My favorite part of the job, the part I enjoy most, is being around the kids and being able to help them when I can,” said Talley. When’s she’s not at work at Alcorn Central, Talley enjoys playing in a local ladies’ tennis league and going to the ballgames and activities of her two children — 18-year-old Riley, a student at Northeast Mississippi Community College, and 13-year-old Brady, who attends Alcorn Central Middle School, where he plays basketball and baseball.

She has been married to Randy Talley for 20 years. They attend Oakland Baptist Church.

Ward 1 Alderman Jason Michael also raised the issue of enforcement of the city’s trash ordinance which has been officially in effect since Nov. 15. He said he’s aware of several situations in violation of the rules on bins at the road and the requirement to remove cans from the road after pickup.

Mayor Derrick Blythe said the initial enforcement has focused on the bins and they will be directing law and code enforcement officials to enforce all rules in the ordinance, giving a warning for a first violation and a citation after that.

Michael said he knows the majority of citizens are abiding by the rules and he believes it’s essential it be enforced fairly and those who violate it cited so all residents understand they must abide by it.

Businesses to get garbage cans

Today is Sunday, Dec. 11, the 346th day of 2016. There are 20 days left in the year.

BOONEVILLE — Light commercial garbage customers in the city of Booneville will be getting the same blue cans issued to residential customers, along with a slight increase in their monthly garbage bill.

Aldermen voted 4-1 Tuesday to issue the cans to light commercial users and add an additional $1.05 per month to all light commercial garbage bills to cover the cost. Ward 2 Alderman Jeff Williams cast the lone dissenting vote on the measure.

Light commercial customers are businesses that do not contract for dumpster service but do receive trash pickup twice per week instead of once per week like residential customers. These customers must also abide by the rules of the city’s new garbage ordinance once they receive the new cans. The board agreed to determine a tentative date to begin issuing the cans after the mayor had a chance to meet with Waste Connections officials to look at routes and timing.

Ward 3 Alderman Mark McCoy asked the board to consider issuing the cans to commercial customers, saying he had numerous requests for the containers. Other board members agreed the cans should be

Selmer Local soccer field gets improvements SELMER, Tenn. — A love for his home county and the desire to help promote positive thinking about McNairy County led one man to fund the improvements to the soccer field at the Selmer City Park.

The soccer field has been

rebuilt from the field’s gravel base to new grass surface and will provide McNairy Central’s soccer teams a great place to play their home games.

When Gary Kerby learned that McNairy Central was unable to play any home matches because of their water-logged field he decided that it would be a project for him to fix.

Kerby began looking into what could be done in the spring and began the process of field reconstruction.

While Kerby is reluctant to even admit his contributions to help rebuild the field, he has donated $30,000 for the project, according to sources.

His generosity and love for McNairy Central was evident when he would not talk about the amount of his funding.

“It was just not the money he gave to work on the field, he was out there helping five days a week for three months,” said MCHS boys soccer coach Nick Cook. “He wanted to make sure the work was done right.

We will never be able to thank him enough for what he has done for soccer at McNairy Central and in the county.”

A byproduct of Kerby’s donation is it may spark someone else to see a need at McNairy Central or in their community and step-up to make it happen.

“We have lost so much in McNairy County in the last few years from many businesses to the hospital,” commented Kerby. “I wanted to be a part of something positive and help our young people see something good can happen in our county.”

Kerby began the project by getting an engineering firm from Memphis, Carlston Consulting Engineers, Inc., to draw blueprints for the field. The company did the work for free as their contribution to rebuilding the field.

The soccer field had been worked on several years ago, but the water drainage issue was not improved at all.

Cook said the old field could be unplayable for a week after a rain in the spring.

“It got to the point where it was dangerous to put players on the field ...,” remarked Cook.

Animal shelter friends also have holiday needs There are many great causes in our community this time of year.

Most of those at Christmas time are to make sure people have a good holiday meal, kids have toys and folks of all ages have warm clothes.

But let us not forgot our furry friends who are seeking good homes.

The Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is wishing for a Christmas filled with donated gifts for their four-legged friends.

The shelter is hosting “Angel Paws,” a fundraiser where Christmas trees filled with Christmas wishes were placed at five local businesses in Corinth.

The handmade ornaments have a photo of a shelter animal and a list of needed items.

It is an adoption process much like popular Angel Trees.

Some of the items on the wish list include dog food, cat food, kitten food, garbage bags, brooms, heavy duty tarps, food bowls, litter scoops, litter boxes, pet shampoo, hand sanitizer, spray bottles, pet crates, rubber gloves, old bedsheets, newspapers, mops, Walmart gift cards and cash donations.

The trees were donated and decorated by shelter volunteer Donna Orlick.

Trees are located at Tractor Supply, Pet Sense, Vet Med, Corinth Animal Care Center and Jackson Animal Clinic.

The shelter has also placed Christmas donation cans at businesses throughout Corinth.

The local animal shelter is a no-kill, nonprofit organization on a mission to save the abused, neglected, abandoned and injured animals of Corinth and Alcorn County.

Suits await decision on combination If Mississippi gets its way, a long-running case challenging the state’s mental health care for children could be rolled up with the more recent suit by the federal government over how the state provides mental health care for adults.

The federal government, though, is fighting that effort, saying the two cases should remain distinct.

The Troupe case was filed in 2010 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, alleging Mississippi was far too reliant on sending children away from their families to psychiatric institutions for mental health treatment.

The adult case was filed in August, making similar accusations that adults were being confined in institutions instead of being offered care in community settings.

Under federal law and court decisions, states are supposed to provide care in the least restrictive setting possible, helping people live at home and not in state mental hospitals or private institutions.

Mississippi, though, has been slow to follow those directives, still relying on institutions to provide much

of its care, even though those settings are more expensive than community care.

The state Jeff Amy argues that Columnist the two cases have similar issues, both feature the state as a defendant, and both feature Justice Department involvement. The federal government hasn’t intervened in Troupe but has filed briefs and taken part in unsuccessful settlement talks.

“While Troupe involves children and this matter involves adults, there is no legitimate dispute that any alleged needed changes in the State’s care of individuals with mental illness would necessarily involve changes for the care of both children and adults,” attorney Gregg Mayer wrote on behalf of the state.

The federal government opposes combining the cases, saying care issues for children and adults are distinct, and there would be few advantages to a court examining the issues together.

“Few experts or witnesses

could effectively testify in both cases because of the significant differences in the relevant institutions and services for each population,” lawyer Elizabeth Kelley wrote for the Justice Department.

The state is also trying to freeze discovery in the case until consolidation is decided, while the Justice Department wants to go ahead with requesting documents and deposing witnesses.

The Troupe case had been stuck in suspended animation, but under pressure from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals over delays in many cases, U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate made some important rulings in November.

He dismissed part of the lawsuit claiming the state was violating early screening requirements of the Medicaid program, adopting a magistrate’s conclusion that the plaintiffs had failed to ask for screening.

The plaintiffs’ claim that Mississippi is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act continues, and after Wingate dismissed the Medicaid claims, he opened up discovery in the case af-

ter a yearslong freeze.

Wingate has never decided whether he will certify Troupe as a class action, repeatedly putting off ruling.

If he rejected class-action status, that outcome could be fatal to the suit, because any remedies won by the plaintiffs would apply only to the original plaintiffs.

The adult suit is being heard by U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, and the federal government may be trying to avoid Wingate’s courtroom. With the incoming Trump administration, long delays could mean new leaders at the Justice Department change their mind and agree to a settlement that gives the state more of what it wants.

In one way, though, it might be appropriate for the cases to be merged. The Troupe case has existed in limbo so long that all the original child plaintiffs are now adults. The youngest person named in the complaint, then 13, is now at least 19 years old.

It’s been a tough decade for the political left. Eight years ago, a Time magazine cover portrayed Barack Obama as Franklin Roosevelt, complete with a cigarette and holder and a cover line proclaiming, “The New New Deal.” A Newsweek cover announced, “We Are All Socialists Now.” Now the cover story is different. Time has just announced -- inevitably, though a bit begrudgingly -- that its person of the year for 2016 is Donald Trump.

No mention of New Deals or socialism.

There was some empirical evidence in that direction, as well. The recession triggered by the financial crisis of 2007-08 was the deepest experienced by anyone not old enough to remember the 1930s. Obama was elected with 53 percent of the popular vote -- more than any candidate since the 1980s -- and Democrats won congressional elections with similar majorities, just as they had in 2006.

Things look different now, and not just because Trump was elected president. It has been clear that most voters have been rejecting big-government policies, not only in the United States but also in most democratic nations around the world.

You didn’t hear Hillary Clinton campaigning on the glories of Obamacare or the Iranian nuclear deal, and her attack on “trumped-up trickle-down” economics didn’t strike any chords in the modest-income Midwest.

Republican success has been even greater in gubernatorial and state legislature elections, to the point that Democrats hold both the governorship and legislative control only in California, Hawaii, Delaware and Rhode Island. After eight years of the Obama presidency, Democrats hold fewer elective offices than at any time since the 1920s.

Things look similar abroad. Britain’s Conservatives, returned to power in 2010, are in a commanding position over a left-lurching Labour Party. France’s Socialist president, with single-digit approval, declined to run for a second term.

European social democratic

parties have been hemorrhaging votes and got walloped in Sunday’s Italian referendum. In Latin America and Asia, the left is declining or on the defensive.

Overall, history is not bending toward happy acceptance of ever larger government at home, nor is it moving toward submersion of national powers and identities into large and inherently undemocratic international organizations.

The nation-state remains the focus of most people’s loyalties, and in a time of economic and cultural diffusion, as Yuval Levin argues in his recent book “The Fractured Republic,” big-government policies designed for an age of centralization have become increasingly dysfunctional.

Obama doesn’t seem to have noticed this, though maybe he did at some point between 9 and 10 o’clock on election night. Shrewder center-left politicians who have shown they know how to win elections have. Bill Clinton urged his wife’s campaign managers to put her out in rural areas so she could speak to voters’ concerns there. The 30-something geniuses she installed in her trendy Brooklyn headquarters thought they knew better.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, speaking in Washington this week, said, “We have to pay attention to culture and

identity.” He argued that in response to Islamic extremism, “political correctness can’t get in the way.”

Such advice suggests a sharp shift in current leftist strategy, which includes “identity politics” appeals to minorities at home and obeisance to the wisdom of supranational entities, such as the Paris climate change conference and the European Union.

What’s missing in that is a concentration on the interests of one’s own citizenry.

To the left, that smacks of nationalism, which some seem to regard as only a baby step away from Nazism.

It’s not. The United States Constitution was designed to provide a framework in which rights are guaranteed and voters in states can choose policies in line with their different backgrounds and beliefs.

Donald Trump’s victory means the left can’t jam its policies down on the whole nation -- and gives it the incentive to develop policies acceptable to not only its own base but also voters among whom it fell agonizingly short this year.

basic training in San Antonio, Texas. After basic training he went to a base in Selma, Ala., and from there to Tokyo, where he served during the Korean War. At first Boatman worked in the commissary, until he met other airmen who were interested in art.

He showed them some of his artwork and they were able to get him reassigned to the department of drawing statistical charts. These charts were sent from Tokyo to Korea, and because of their nature he was given a security clearance.

Boatman is the longtime president of the Corinth Artists Guild

Gallery. He worked for Lord & Taylor, one of the premiere department stores in New York City, for almost 20 years. During his time in the Big Apple, Boatman opened a small art gallery on Bleecker Street, the heart of the Bohemian mecca of Greenwich Village. He returned to Corinth to retire in 1992.

Since his return to Corinth, Boatman has helped with Corinth Theatre-arts and participated in the preservation of historic sites in Corinth, including the VerandahCurlee House. He was recently named the Junior Auxiliary Citizen of the Year.

Boatman has taken

on many roles in the community, from serving as an interpreter for Hispanic citizens to spreading holiday cheer as Santa Claus around Christmas.

The honoree is chosen by a committee from a group of nominees. The Distinguished Alumnus of the Year must meet two or more of the following criteria: must have been out of school for 15 years prior to date of selection; excellence in chosen field; outstanding community service; commitment to lifelong service; success in arts, athletics, business or a chosen field; past honors and awards; and leadership.

Boatman is a 1949 graduate of Corinth High School, where he participated in the band, chorus and annual staff. He started in the junior high band as an eighth grader, playing the snare drums and was promoted to the high school band in the ninth grade, where he continued to play snare drum throughout his high school career.

His favorite teacher in high school was Florence Cooper, because she made history come

alive. He was also fond of math teacher Emma Street. CHS didn’t have art classes when he was in school, so he went to the local library on Saturdays, where he was introduced to the arts by Margaret Smith.

Boatman enjoyed his time at CHS and says the teachers were firm and strict but caring, and his fellow classmates were kind and caring with one another.

After graduation he attended the Memphis Academy of Art. He lived on campus and came

home almost every weekend. He was there for a year before entering the Air Force.

Entering the Air Force was not his original plan. He and friend Jack Young, who was also from Corinth, played a joke on someone and told them they were going into the armed services.

The person believed them and threw them a huge going away party. He says they felt so guilty that they went and signed up to join the military.

Trump eyes Exxon CEO for key job

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump moved closer to nominating Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his secretary of State on Saturday, a decision that would bring a business leader with close ties to Russia into the Cabinet.

Trump has privately signaled that he plans to tap Tillerson for the powerful Cabinet post, but had not formally offered him the job as of Saturday evening, according to people who have spoken with Trump and his transition team.

Some advisers worry that Tillerson’s Russia connections would lead to a contentious Senate confirmation hearing and keep alive questions about Trump’s own relationship with Moscow.

Trump and Tillerson met privately in New York on Saturday, their second meeting in a week. The presidentelect’s transition team

said an announcement was not expected over the weekend.

Tillerson rose to prominence through Exxon’s Russian energy business and was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship. He has argued against sanctions the U.S. and European allies imposed on Russia after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

In an interview airing Sunday, Trump praised Tillerson as “much more than a businessman.”

“He’s a world-class player,” Trump said on Fox News Sunday. “To me, a great advantage is he knows many of the players and he knows them well. He does massive deals in Russia, he does massive deals, not for himself, for the company.”

Trump’s own relationship with Russia was an issue through much of the campaign. The CIA has concluded with “high confidence” that Russia sought to influence the U.S. election on behalf

of the Republican, an assessment Trump has rejected.

The president-elect’s deliberations over his pick to lead the State Department — particularly his consideration of Mitt Romney for the post — have exposed anew the deep rivalries within Trump’s team. Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway warned publicly that Trump supporters would feel betrayed if he were to choose a fierce rival for the post, especially given that some loyal allies — most notably former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — also wanted the job.

Giuliani officially took himself out of consideration for the Cabinet on Friday, though his standing had already been diminished. In addition to Romney, Trump has also been considering Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker and John Bolton, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump’s team has discussed bringing Bolton

on as a No. 2 to Tillerson.

The people who have spoken to Trump and the transition team about the State Department decision insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the internal deliberations publicly.

Internal divisions were also complicating efforts to set up Trump’s senior White House staff.

Longtime aides are fearful of being left out of the mix as incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus builds out the West Wing team.

Trump had given Priebus wide authority in the decision-making over White House jobs.

But four people involved in the transition said Trump was irritated after learning of his loyalists’ frustrations with Priebus in recent press reports. Trump made his displeasure clear to Priebus, who has begun outreach to some of the people who worked on Trump’s campaign from the start.

Recounts bring Stein Take control over what’s holding you back publicity that eluded her on campaign trail

Long before presidential recounts crossed her mind, trash dumping and mercury contamination pushed Jill Stein into politics.

Stein, a physician, joined a 1990s movement to shut down or better regulate mercury-polluting incinerators in Massachusetts. She authored papers on child neurological damage and spoke at public gatherings. She testified at hearings as a medical expert.

Massachusetts eventually enacted strict limits on mercury emissions, and a few incinerators closed.

But Stein had begun to see the system as set up to block change, and when the Green Party recruited her to run for governor in 2002, she took the chance.

“I was part of a very frustrated public health initiative, and then the Green Party came to me and said, ‘Why don’t you run for office?’” Stein said in an October interview with The Associated

Press. “I said, ‘Everything else is failing, I might as well try electoral politics.’”

She’s been trying ever since, running for president in 2012 and again this year, earning roughly 1.5 million votes. She lost the 2002 bid, as well as another run for governor in 2010, state representative in 2004 and Massachusetts secretary of state in 2006.

Stein is now gaining arguably more attention than she ever did on the campaign trail by pushing for recounts of the presidential contest in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. She has claimed, without concrete evidence, that the voting systems there are vulnerable to tampering and that a recount would reassure voters.

A judge in Michigan ended the recount this week, ruling Stein lacked standing. “We may be moving out of the court of law, but we’re moving into the court of public opinion,” Stein told dozens of supporters Saturday in Detroit.

Public viewing of John Glenn in Ohio to extend for 8 hours Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Members of the public will be given eight hours Friday to pay their respects to John Glenn as the late astronaut-hero lies in state at Ohio’s capitol building.

A spokesman said Saturday that Glenn would lie in repose in the State-

house Rotunda from noon to 8 p.m. under a proposal set for final approval by the building’s advisory board Monday.

Apublic memorial service at Mershon Auditorium has been scheduled for 2 p.m. on Dec. 17. The event will be open to the public but tickets are required.

Band suspended through next spring PALO ALTO, Calif.

— The Stanford marching band has been temporarily suspended through next spring after a panel found repeated violations of school policies.

The punishment announced Friday comes after the band was barred from performing at away games during the 2015-16 season for violating policies on sexual harassment, alcohol, controlled substances and hazing.

Stanford University officials tell the Mercury News the band will be reconstituted under a new music director.

The band was booed off the field during the Rose Bowl halftime show earlier this year after offending some fans with its performance.

Execution called ‘avoidable disaster’ ATMORE, Ala. — Defenders of a condemned inmate in Alabama are calling his execution an “avoidable disaster.” For 13 minutes after he was sedated to avoid an unconstitutionally painful death, Ronald Bert Smith Jr. was seen coughing, gasping and moving.

Smith’s legal team says these movements Thursday night show “he was not anesthetized at any point during the agonizingly long procedure.”

Alabama’s Corrections Commissioner

Jeff Dunn disputes that Smith was in pain after being injected with midazolam, a sedative some states are using now that pharmaceutical companies are refusing to make other drugs available for executions.

Smith was sentenced to die for killing convenience store clerk Casey Wilson in 1994, a crime prosecutors described as an execution-style murder.

Chapel of Love lost to Smokies fire GATLINBURG, Tenn.

— The wildfires that killed 14 people and tore through Gatlinburg also stole an iconic venue from this city at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains whose nickname is “the wedding capital of the South.”

All that remains of Cupid’s Chapel of Love is a heart-shaped pink sign with the name spelled out in Barbiedoll-style cursive lettering. It’s uncertain whether the chapel will ever be rebuilt.

The fires also took the life of Reverend Ed Taylor, the 85-year-old who started the region’s wedding niche almost four decades ago and administered tens of thousands of ceremonies himself.

Comedian eyes run in New Jersey NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Actor and comedian Joe Piscopo is serious when he says he’s considering a run for New Jersey governor in 2017.

He says he’s been meeting with Republican county officials and lawmakers to feel out his prospects.

He says he would likely run as a Republican in 2017, but isn’t ruling out jumping in as an independent after the June 6 primary.

Piscopo has never campaigned for or held office, but considered running in 2004, telling CNN that he loved the state enough to run, though he never did.

3 children die in fatal house fire KOSCIUSKO — Attala County Coroner Sam Bell has confirmed that three children were killed in a house fire overnight.

Bell tells WLBT-TV that authorities were called to the scene about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Further details, including the children’s ages and what might have caused the fire, were not immediately available.

Plant workers feel forgotten by Trump

Court: Lawyer can represent Greenwood

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Some workers at a northeastern Indiana factory slated for closure feel forgotten with the scant attention they’ve received compared with the sister Carrier Corp. plant two hours away in Indianapolis.

Both the 700-worker Huntington factory and the one in Indianapolis are owned by United Technologies and were to close over the next couple years because of outsourcing to Mexico.

President-elect Donald Trump’s recent intervention to stem 800 of some 1,300 planned job cuts at the Carrier plant has Huntington workers asking why they weren’t included.

Huntington worker Mike Harmon thinks being from a small town hurt their chances of being noticed.

It’s a perceived slight that stings in a county where 72 percent voted for Trump and manufacturing makes up about one-fifth of all jobs.

JACKSON — The Mississippi Supreme Court says the city of Greenwood had authority to pay a lawyer to represent the city in a now-failed challenge to the city’s 2013 mayoral election.

The court voted 7-2 Thursday to overturn a ruling by Leflore County Circuit Judge Margaret Carey-McCray which had barred such payment of legal fees.

The Greenwood City Council hired a lawyer after the attorney general said the move was legal, but rescinded the hiring after the lower court ruling.

Justices say the city can pay to represent official interests, but not the private interests of Mayor Carolyn McAdams, whose election was challenged

by Sheriel Perkins. McAdams unseated Perkins in 2009 and beat Perkins again in 2013.

Court rejects Clarke death row appeal JACKSON — The Mississippi Supreme Court

is denying an appeal from a death row inmate convicted of a 1996 Clarke County murder.

The court ruled Thursday that it had already rejected in earlier appeals the issues raised

by Kelvin Jordan.

Jordan and Frontrell Edwards were convicted of murdering Tony Roberts and his 2-year-old son, Cordera Bradley, in Pachuta. Evidence showed the men were trying to rob someone to get money to go to a football game. Roberts and his son were killed so they couldn’t identify their robbers.

Jordan claimed his lawyers were ineffective, his sentence is disproportionate and that the trial judge erred in evidentiary decisions.

City employee jailed on assault charge LUMBERTON — The city of Lumberton Public Works director is facing assault charges after an incident at a county building.

Daniel Davis, 63, was arrested about 10 a.m.

Friday on charges of disturbing the peace and simple assault after authorities said he allegedly assaulted two people in the county library.

Police Chief Elsie Cowart says Davis is being held at the Lamar County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

He says Davis may face more charges pending the outcome of the investigation.

It was unknown if Davis is represented by an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The two people allegedly assaulted were

checked out at an area hospital. Cowart says none of their injuries was life-threatening.

New House members take oath of office JACKSON — Two new members have been sworn in to the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Republicans Donnie Scoggin of Ellisville and John Glen Corley of Lumberton took the oath of office Friday at the state Capitol. The two men won runoff elections Nov. 29 to fill seats that were vacant. Each will serve the final three years of a four-year term.

Highway dedicated to slain sheriff LUCEDALE — A section of Hwy. 98 in George County now bears the name of Sheriff Garry Welford, who was killed in the line of duty in 2010.

Welford was killed as he was helping pursue two suspects. Their vehicle struck and killed the sheriff.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation hosted a dedication ceremony Thursday where dozens of family and friends shared stories and memories about Welford, who served as game warden for years, then twice elected as sheriff.

Welford’s son, Tony, said his father had a tremendous love for George County.

The section of highway named in Welford’s memory is located between the Hwy. 63 overpass and Old Highway 63 in George County.

Cafe Mike’s marks two decades

The restaurant will celebrate 20 years with special treats for customers during the week of Dec. 19-23.

Marcia Wigginton remembers a customer in the early days of Cafe Mike’s eying “mostaccioli” on the menu.

“I think y’all made that word up,” the woman said.

It was more than 20 years ago that Mike and Marcia Guare decided to bring a little bit of Chicago to the South. They started with a tiny spot on Cass Street called Mike’s Barbecue Express. Two years later, on July 15, 1996, Cafe Mike’s opened at Harper and Proper and enjoys success today as one of the city’s most popular eating and meeting places. The restaurant will celebrate 20 years with special treats for customers during the week of Dec. 19-23.

Marcia — now Wigginton — had family from Corinth and would spend summers here. She met her late husband, who died in 2008, at a Chicago restaurant where he started out as a busboy as a teen and eventually became the chef.

“He always wanted his own restaurant and I always wanted to move south, and one day we just decided that’s what our plan was,” she said.

More than the barbecue restaurant did, Cafe Mike’s reflects his inclinations in the kitchen.

“He had worked in an Italian pizzeria, and so he wanted to implement

his kind of cooking into it,” said Wigginton. “In the beginning he started with a lot of pastas, mostaccioli and lasagnas. As time went on, we started bringing that down to a different level, and he started making what sold.

The salads just seemed to be something Corinth really wanted.”

They also brought a pizza oven from Chicago, and the dough is still made just the way Mike did it.

Alongside pizza, menu favorites include burgers, the club sandwich, chicken salad, Philly steak and cheese, a big variety of salads, and Wednesday pasta specials.

Mike’s signature ranch dressing is very popular.

“They dip everything we have on this menu in ranch dressing,” said Wigginton.

The staff also continues Mike’s soups, although he left no written recipes for those.

Their children, Michael Guare and Mandi Barker, grew up in the business.

At the first restaurant on Cass Street, the two would work a night or two a week to earn five bucks.

Today, Guare, who completed a master’s degree in business, runs the

restaurant, and Wigginton gives him much credit for its success.

“Mike and I were not educated,” she said. “We were workers. There were a lot of things he turned around for us.”

Guare branched out for a while with his own enterprise, Lil Mike’s Grill, on Fillmore Street in the old Hamburger Harold’s spot. He considered it a success, but the demands of two restaurants and two children were tough to juggle.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “I’m glad I did it.”

With the success of Cafe Mike’s, the restaurant has expanded twice, most recently with a larger kitchen. But there have been challenging times, such as the Great Recession years.

“When everything went down, we were to a skeleton crew,” said Wigginton. “Mike was in the kitchen from open to close, and I was out here, and it was rough. People say that a restaurant has two years where it will make or break you. I so disagree with that. The first two years were not horrible. I would say it takes almost 10 years if

you really want staying power, and you’ve got to work at it hard.”

While the walls of the restaurant are packed with sports memorabilia and vintage pieces, it didn’t start out that way.

“We got a few people to bring us some pictures of their kids doing sports,” she said. “We wanted it to be sports-related because Mike was such a sports fan. Through the years, we have collected so much. People have brought things in. People have wanted to buy things off the wall.”

Although the 20th anniversary date was in July, they decided to combine the celebration with the holidays. July was too busy with a kitchen remodel in progress, and the Cubs kept winning games — a thrill they are still feeling.

“That was unbelievable,” said Guare. “Dad was a huge Cubs fan. He used to take us when we were kids.”

For the restaurant’s big thank-you to Corinth, customers can expect treats and giveaways.

Eighty-three-year-old Nani is coming out of retirement to make cookies for the week, and grandkids Riley, Haley and Michael will be around to help celebrate the success of Mike’s dream.

“I believe he would want this dream to go on for the next generation,” said Wigginton.

which had been a Huddle House restaurant franchisee for more than 16 years.

Hosts trim once-a-year friends from their Christmas party list D E A R ABBY: For the past 17 years, we have hosted parties at Christmas.

Although Abigail years ago startVan Buren they ed with 15 guests and Dear Abby light hors d’oeuvres, the list has grown to 82 guests and a full buffet dinner and bar.

It costs several thousand dollars when you factor in the servers and bartender, and it requires months of planning.

Over the years we have had guests who attend our party, but we never see or hear from them during the year unless it’s to inquire about the party.

We don’t expect a tit for tat, but we are now at a point where we need to curtail costs.

We feel used by these people, and would rather host a smaller gathering for people we consider better friends and acquaintances.

What I’m struggling with is how to respond when asked why they are no longer on the guest list. -- USED PARTY HOST DEAR USED PARTY HOST: If someone actually has the gall

to ask that question, I think you should tell the truth and respond that, “We have had to cut costs, and this year we decided to entertain only people we see on a regular basis.”

DEAR ABBY: You missed the mark in your answer to “Mother Doesn’t Know Best,” whose 8-year-old stepson arrives for visits in old, ill-fitting clothing, even though the father purchases new clothes for him on every visit.

I live in Ohio, and the state considers housing, food, electricity, gas and running water as part of the makeup of child support.

I know this firsthand. You also need to know if the mother is working and if she contributes to her son’s support.

What about other expenses (toys, haircuts, uniforms, etc.)?

Part of the problem may be that Stepmom and Dad live across the country and aren’t there to see what exactly goes on day to day.

Yes, the little boy shouldn’t be showing up at their home in clothes that are too small, but even Stepmom said he was putting on weight. -- MITZI IN DAYTON, OHIO DEAR MITZI: Your points are well taken. However, the majority of the feedback I received

about that letter pointed out that children arriving in old clothes for visits with their dads is a popular ploy that some custodial mothers use in order to get new clothes, and some even return the clothes for cash.

Kim Lyles: An Alcorn County treasure Kim Lyles wears many hats. She’s many things to many people.

But to me she’ll always be simply ...Kim. To put it mildly — if Kent that’s possible Lyles has Mohundro — lived a colorSports Editor ful and full life, although she recently just turned a youthful 50. The former Kossuth Aggiette —

that’s what they were called back in the day — and later All-SEC and All-American point guard for the Ole Miss Lady Rebels, Lyles has loved every minute.

It would be against the odds to bet she’d go back and change anything about her career, or her life.

The former Kim Bullard has been married to Allen Lyles for 25 years.

Or as she puts it, “half my life.”

Kim and Allen — the former state trooper who now

teaches at the new Corinth C-Tech — have two children. Logan is a senior at Ole Miss and has been the teams equipment manager for the past two years. Luke is a freshman at Northeast.

“They’re great kids and we’re very proud of them,” Lyles said with a gleam in her eyes.

Lyles’ family goes so far back at Kossuth it’s safe to say they might have been co-founders of the community. She has a nostalgic picture of her granddaddy Jim

Ayers from around 1905 that proves how far back the family goes in the community.

She also has a brother and sister she loves very much, Jimmy and Nan. Lyles graduated from Kossuth High School in 1984, and she and this writer go back earlier than that. The action begins at 3 pm as the Oxford girls face Biggersville, followed by the Biggersville and Nettleton boys. The remaining schedule will feature the Booneville and Ingomar girls and the Booneville and North Pontotoc boys.

Admission is $5 a person and all proceeds will benefit the Kiwanis Clubs efforts to help children in the community, including its annual scholarship program.

her progress from a really good player to possibly the best female athlete ever to call Alcorn County home.

“We lived three miles from here,” Lyles mentioned as we sat in her office at Kossuth High School recently, reminiscing and sharing information. “I always loved playing ball from as far back as I can remember.

“I was always ultracompetitive. It didn’t matter if we were playing basketball, football, cards or whatever. I wanted to win. That’s where my competitive nature comes from. I never wanted anyone to outhustle me.”

Back in her Kim Bullard days at Kossuth High School, she played on the same team with girls she considered sisters and close friends.

That list included — but wasn’t limited to — Nila Davis, Donna Wallace, Darlene Michaels, Robbie Rogers, Christy Swindall, Kathy Ragan, Marla Mitchell, Ginger Thrasher and Debbie Wilhite.

Mitchell, Thrasher, and Wilhite are deceased now.

They played together so long — and progressed so well — that they became feared among other teams around North Mississippi. You could even say among most teams in South Mississippi in the early to mid ’80s. Lyles compiled accolades over the years that would make anyone envious.

During her four-year varsity career she helped Kossuth compile an impressive 114-17 record while scoring over 2,000 points (and she accomplished that without a three-point line). The

Aggiettes were Class 3A State Runners-Up in 1983-84 and North Half Champs in 1984. Also on the list of accolades, Kossuth claimed the 1983 and 1984 District 1 3A championships.

Lyles was named fourtime All-County and AllTombigbee Conference.

KHS won the Tombigbee Conference championship in 1983.

She was also honored with Tombigbee Conference MVP in 1984 and County MVP in 1983 and 1984. Lyles was also AllNorth Half and All-State in both 1983 and 1984.

After signing with legendary head coach Van Chancellor and the Lady Rebels her performance on the SEC courts garnered her even more honors.

Her individual accomplishments include being listed in the top 5 in several categories. Lyles is fifth in career steals (248), second in career assists (559), first in most assists in a season (212), second in three-point field-goal percentage in a season (42.9%), and second in career three-point FG percentage (57-133).

The three-point line wasn’t adopted until her senior season.

“I wish we’d have had that the whole time,” she said.

If you put her legendary career and achievements on the court aside, you’ll still find a charming Southern belle that you’re automatically drawn to.

Why? Because Lyles is just a good, sweet, down-home country girl who loves people just as much or more than sports.

She can be labeled sev-

eral different ways: student, athlete, All-American, mother, wife, coach, and educator. If you were to ask her which is her favorite label, from my experience with Lyles the answer would be wife AND mother.

She cherishes her days of glory at Kossuth and Ole Miss, but she’s got something to gleam over now that outshines that: her family.

However, Lyles isn’t just a family woman.

She’s a counselor at Kossuth High School who thoroughly enjoys helping young people grow up to be the adults they will one day turn out to be.

Here’s a little story that many of you may not know about the former Kossuth star.

During her senior year, the adopted team song that season was the old country classic “Swingin’” by John Anderson.

They ran out onto the court with it blasting through the gymnasium speaker system, but it went further than that.

“We would call the radio station (the old WKCU) and have them play it as we were traveling to our games,” Lyles reminisced. “It was our good luck song.”

Boy was it ever, because they didn’t lose much.

Lyles said her son asked her once several years ago if she was a four or five star recruit coming out of high school.

Modern recruiting is an area that has changed dramatically since Lyles was recruited by LSU and Ole Miss, among others.

There was no so-called rating system in those days.

“If you were good enough you were recruited and if you were really good they signed you.

There were no ‘stars’ attached to our names.”

Other things are different now, including how and where schools recruit.

“It’s all about the money now,” she mentioned.

“When I played, a majority of the girls on our team at Ole Miss were from Mississippi. Now everybody recruits nationally, and there are a lot more foreign players.”

When asked to name a favorite game or memory from her days with the Lady Rebels, she pinpointed a contest against none other than the best of the best.

“We went and played Tennessee the year Pat Summitt won her first national title. I had taken several charges (which she was also known for) and we were beating them (Tennessee). The fans started booing me every time I touched the ball.

“We ended up winning that game. Jennifer Gillom was a senior that year.”

For you Ole Miss sports historians, you’ll remember Jennifer’s older sister Peggy was an assistant to Chancellor and had been an All-American herself a few years earlier.

It’s a fair bet the booing was caused by the superlative play of Lyles and her Ole Miss teammates.

Don’t forget, those teams were loaded under Chancellor’s guidance.

During Lyles’ four-year stint the Lady Rebels went to two Sweet 16s and a pair of Elite 8s.

They were a national contender pretty much every year back then.

“Coach Chancellor really knew the game of basketball inside and out,” Lyles continued.

“He knew the X’s and O’s better than anyone.”

Lyles has a good piece of advice for modern day athletes who aspire to go as far as she did, and possibly further.

“There are a lot of young athletes today that think you get good just practicing the hour or two a day at school.

But if you’re wanting to really excel and get to

the next level you have to play whenever you possibly can and work on your skills.”

“An hour or two every day at school isn’t going to do it. It’s like anything else in life: if you want to accomplish something special you have to put in a lot of sweat and hard work outside the gym. You’ve gotta be dedicated and be willing

to do whatever it takes to succeed.” If anyone should know about that it’s Lyles.

Hers is a story that’s still being written, but it’s been a blast up to this point. Kim’s is a compelling story, basketball or not.

High tech Tigers are stalking the campus of Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Students at the school are among the most technologically advanced in the nation as the college continues efforts to remain on the cutting edge of putting technology to work in the classroom.

“There’s always something new on the horizon. I want Northeast to be the leader in that,” said NEMCC President Ricky Ford.

The college’s technology effort has centered for the past several years on the incorporation of Apple’s iPad tablet computers into all aspects of student learning.

Every student is encouraged to get and use an iPad and almost every subject area uses the devices in their coursework.

NEMCC Webmaster Jeffery Powell, who oversees the school’s technology operations, said they want to put the power of today’s tech into the hands of every student and prepare them for the working world where they will be surrounded by computers.

“Technology is in every job. We want students to get acquainted with that technology,” he said.

The school is continuing to shift away from traditional dead-tree textbooks to electronic books on the iPads, greatly

reducing costs for the students. Instructors are using free open-source electronic textbooks for some classes. Many instructors have also developed or are developing their own electronic course material they can make available to students for free.

Powell said students were paying as much as $1,000 per semester for textbooks prior to the launch of the iPad initiative and have seen that number drop significantly.

He expects it to drop further as more and more material becomes available.

The use of technology also allows students to access a world of information beyond the pages of a traditional textbook.

Students can easily extend their studies and research to gain the latest information in their field and electronic resources can be regularly updated to reflect the newest information.

“It’s opened up a whole new door for information transfer to the students,” said Ford.

This is the second year for the full-blown implementation of iPads across the campus, but the shift to electronic devices in the classroom goes back much farther. In 2008 the school became one of the first in the nation to join iTunes U, an educational program offered through Apple allowing instructors to make classroom lectures and other materials available in the form of audio podcasts. Powell said students and instructors were very receptive to the concept.

Northeast Mississippi Community College students are at the cutting edge of the use of technology in the classroom.

In 2009 the school’s radiology program adopted the iPod Touch for all students. In 2011 Allied Health as a whole, encompassing all of the school’s health-related programs, moved to the iPad. Powell said the health courses were early adopters of the technology because of the flexibility it allows in clinical learning settings.

The tablets also give students experience with working with electronic medical records, the same types of systems they’ll see in their future jobs.

Powell said as other instructors and students saw the benefits of the technology the began seeking to use it in their programs and two years ago the school launched its campuswide iPad program. The school has invested heavily in high-speed wireless Internet infrastructure to support the programs as well as creating a unique way for students to get tech help.

A student-operated technology help desk offers assistance with any issues that may arise. Students in computer oriented programs staff the program, gaining valuable real world experience while helping their fellow students. Many also receive classroom credit in related courses.

Powell said the future is bright for technology at the school. He said faculty members continue to come up with unique ways to further integrate technology into the classroom and more is on the horizon with new equipment and programs set to launch in the near future.

“We’re continuing to look to toward the future. We want to stay on the cutting edge,” he said.

Christmas Eve had arrived and there was no time to waste.

Santa had to get ready, and he needed to do it quick, if he was going to be on time to deliver toys to all the boys and girls of the world.

He’d shined his boots and his favorite belt buckle. Mrs. Claus gave him a nutritious dinner and, while that gave him en-

ergy, Santa was dreaming of the cookies and milk the children would leave for him. He brushed his teeth, took a bubble bath, and polished his beard with special gloss until it shined like a hillside of snow.

The elves brought him a mirror and Santa looked awesome!

He was ready! And it was time to put on his “special Christmas clothes.”

Now, you know what you need to start with, when you get dressed? Well, Santa slid open the drawer that held his warmest, most favorite, magical undies but (uh-oh!) Santa’s “long… wooly” underwear was missing!

Once upon a time, they were red, but now they were faded.

They used to fit like a glove, but these days, they sagged. They’d been patched and sewn a dozen times, but Santa loved those undies. He couldn’t imagine flying through the air in an open sleigh without them. His underwear sure kept him warm.

Oh, but he looked for them!

He searched every drawer in his bedroom. He looked in the

dirty laundry, just in case. They weren’t beneath the bed or between the sofa cushions. The elves tried to tell him that his pink boxers from Valentine’s Day would work, but that was “too… cutesy.” The shamrock jammies weren’t “Christmassy,” and his Easter briefs were too brief. Santa needed his red wooly undies!

What if he lost them forever?

You might have your lucky socks. Your child may have a stuffed animal he needs to keep close. And in “Santa’s Underwear,” the Big Guy can’t find the one thing nobody should be without.

Let’s face it – underwear is funny, especially if you’re a little kid and especially when it’s underwear belonging to a guy like Santa. Children, therefore, will get a kick out of the preposterousness of author Marty Rhodes Figley’s story but the fun doesn’t stop with the tale: illustrator Marty Kelley’s artwork is hilarious. When you’re reading this story, be sure to pay close attention to the elves.

Their goofiness can’t be missed.

And it won’t keep just for Christmas, either. Your 4-to8-year-old will want to see this book in March and July and

September, as well as the holiday season. They’ll see London , they’ll see France , “Santa’s Underwear” will make them dance.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Theresa Peters of Glen and Dale Peters of Corinth. She is the granddaughter of Jane Bonds of Booneville and the late J.L. Bonds and Helen Peters of Glen and the late Clarence Peters.

The prospective groom is the son of Carrie and Sandra Richardson of Columbus, Miss. He is the grandson of the late James Theryl and Betty Elizabeth Richardson of Memphis, Tenn., Johnnie Rixie of Columbus and the late Fred Wesley Rixie.

The bride-elect is a 2010 graduate of Alcorn Central High School. She received her Elementary Education degree from Mississippi University for Women in 2016.

The prospective groom is a 2011 graduate of Northeast Mississippi Community College where he earned an Associate degree in Automotive Repair. He is presently employed at Paccur in Columbus.

The prospective groom is the grandson of the late Mr. Joe Ginn of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Ms. Reba Harris of Muscle Shoals, Ala., the late Mr. Earl Harbor of Sheffield, Ala., and Ms. Gail Pettus of Florence, Ala. Andrew graduated from Alcorn Central High School in 2008. He graduated with a bachelor of arts in biblical studies from Blue Mountain College in May 2012. He graduated from Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary with a master of divinity in December 2014. Andrew is currently serving as the middle school minister at Millington First Baptist Church in Millington, Tenn.

NEW YORK — There’s one important person to thank for Deborah Cox stepping into Whitney Houston’s shoes for the national tour of “The Bodyguard.” That person would be Whitney Houston herself.

Cox and Houston were label-mates and friends, with the late pop star mentoring the Canadian singer and often telling Cox to put family first.

“I take pleasure in the fact that I did know her.

I did have a relationship with her,” Cox says.

“There was a comradery there. She was a mentor.

There was a sisterhood that we shared.”

Cox treasures the pivotal time she and Houston shared a Miami studio to record the duet “Same Script, Different Cast” in 2000. Houston came in, kicked off her shoes and, after the song was done, the two chatted.

“She’d always say to me, ‘Girl, where them babies at? Where them babies at? When are you going to have some babies?’ And it was really literally at the time where I was between albums, trying to figure out when I should start my family,” Cox says.

“That really helped to bring me to where I am today, where I have a family, I have a career, I have a wonderful husband, I have a team support system — and it’s because of that advice.”

Cox says she’s honoring Houston’s memory with the musical based on “The Bodyguard ,” the Oscarnominated 1992 romantic thriller about a diva who falls for a former Secret

Service agent.

The stage version features songs from the movie such as “I Have Nothing,” ‘‘Run to You” and “I Will Always Love You” and adds other Houston hits like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” ‘‘Saving All My Love for You” and “How Will I Know.” Houston died in 2012.

Singing those songs is both a responsibility and a pressure for Cox, who made her Broadway debut in Elton John and Tim Rice’s musical “Aida” and most recently starred opposite Constantine Maroulis in a revival of “Jekyll & Hyde.”

“I know what the expectations are. I know what people want to hear. But also as an actor, as an artist, as a singer, as a performer, I want to be able to deliver as well,” she says.

“I want people to know that, for me, this role is in good hands. I really take it very, very serious.”

by Kevin Costner, says the addition of Cox was a key reason he signed up for the tour and that she has put her own mark on Houston’s songs.

“Her energy and her personality is so intoxicating. You can’t help but like her, and I really think there’s no one else I can think of who can play the role the way she does,” says Mills.

The tour kicked off at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse this month. It will make stops in more than 20 U.S. cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Nashville, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Diego and Dallas.

Trump remains producer on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’

LOS ANGELES — Donald Trump is gone from the boardroom of NBC’s reboot of “Celebrity Apprentice” but he’s kept a business connection to the reality show.

President-elect Trump has an executive producer credit on “The New Celebrity Apprentice,” said Clare Anne Darragh, a spokesman for “Apprentice” creator Mark Burnett. She declined further comment on Trump’s participation in the show that taped last February.

Trump’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for

comment.

The series debuts Jan. 2 with Arnold Schwarzenegger replacing Trump as host. Schwarzenegger is an executive producer on the new show, as Trump was on the original.

Trump’s continued stake in a TV series is yet another unusual aspect of the election of a businessman and reality star to the presidency.

Questions have been raised on how his extensive holdings may intersect with his actions as president.

Davis honored as student of the month The Alcorn Career and Technology Center is pleased to announce that the Mississippi Construction Education Foundation has recognized Ethan Davis as their North District Student of the Month for November.

Winners are chosen based on grades, attendance, discipline in class, outstanding achievements, leadership abilities, and post-graduation plans. All will compete for student of the year honors at the foundation’s annual awards program next April.

“We congratulate our student of the month winners for being such excellent representatives of high school career tech programs in Mississippi,” said Mike Barkett, MCEF president.

“We’re proud of each of them for helping ensure our state has a highly skilled workforce to support the state’s growing construction and manufacturing industries.”

Davis is a model student, with no discipline history and works hard in the classroom and shop.

He is a junior at Biggersville High School and is working toward the completion of the Construction program, under the instruction of Tim Bradley, at the Alcorn Career and Technology Center. He has been an ACTC Student of the Quarter and is a SkillsUSA member. In 2016, he was the SkillsUSA Regional and State Champion in the masonry competition.

As the State Champion, Davis represented the state of Mississippi in Louisville, Kentucky,

summer of 2016, at the SkillsUSA National Masonry Career Development Event. He plans to attend Northeast MS Community College after graduation.

MCEF is a non-profit educational foundation that provides NCCER craft training and credentialing in more than 100 career and technical programs across the state. The foundation’s mission is to train individuals for the construction and manufacturing industries in Mississippi.

The garden will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

UM Engineering School creates Biomedical Degree program OXFORD — After years of development, the University of Mississippi School of Engineering has launched its new biomedical degree program.

The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees approved the curriculum for the new major during its November meeting. Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering are encouraged to apply now for admission for the fall 2017 semester.

“Biomedical engineering at the University of Mississippi will prepare students for rapidly growing opportunities in three primary job markets,” said Dwight Waddell, associate professor of electrical engineering and director of

the new program. “These include biomolecular engineering, biomedical systems engineering and bioinformatics.”

“I believe that the addition of the new biomedical engineering program will definitely serve the university, state and nation well,” said Alex Cheng, dean of the engineering school. “With so much attention currently being given to the field, having such a program here keeps us highly competitive.”

Biomolecular engineering is a growing discipline at the interface of molecular biology, biophysical chemistry and chemical engineering, whereby students gain expertise developing novel molecular tools.

“These tools are used to

translate understanding of fundamental principles of physical biochemistry into useful processes, devices, therapies and diagnostics,” Waddell said.

Biomedical systems engineering incorporates elements of mechanical engineering design with physiological controls and instrumentation.

“Students can employ lessons from bioinstrumentation and systems mechanics to create sensors, test models and build devices to meet currently unmet needs in the medical field,” Waddell explained.

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary hybrid combining computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to analyze and interpret

biological data.

“Techniques from bioinformatics have helped unlock the human genome, better understand evolutionary biology and are now pivotal in the coming era of ‘big data’ analysis,” he said.

In addition to fundamental engineering courses, biomedical engineering students will take courses in biology, chemistry and systems physiology to more effectively apply engineering science to specific medical and industrial needs.

The program has been requested by prospective students for several years, said Marni Kendricks, assistant dean for undergraduate academics in the engineering school.

The idea and initial work for the new program was initiated by Ramanarayanan “Vish” Viswanathan, chair of the UM Department of Electrical Engineering, and Cheng.

Waddell, also a research associate professor of health, exercise science and recreation management at UM, moved into the School of Engineering to facilitate program development in 2013.

“It’s an exciting time,” Waddell said. “With increasing demands to share fiscal resources and promote interdisciplinary research, BME is uniquely situated at the cusp of ap-

plied technology, medicine and STEM education.”

A former postdoctoral researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Waddell earned his doctoral and master’s degrees in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas, and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University. Formerly a faculty member at Tulane University, he has an active research program, including projects on stuttering mitigation, functional brain imaging and postural control of gait and locomotion.
