“We are thrilled to see ourselves ranked this high on their list,” said Superintendent Lee Childress. “This result is a direct reflection of our students and teachers hard work daily.

Firearm Freedom Day is looking to make a soldier smile. The group is using “Santas for Soldiers” to do just that. Firearm Freedom Day is asking elementary students in Alcorn County to make Christmas cards for soldiers overseas. American Legion Post 6 and the Ladies Auxiliary are also helping with the project. “We just want them to make a homemade card,” said Bobby McDaniel with Firearm Freedom Day. “There is no need for postage or an envelope.” Project Package is working with the group to get the cards delivered to soldiers. Three years ago, around 2,200 cards were sent to military personnel serving in other countries. “The highlight of a soldier’s day is getting a package from

Watering the Warriors: Center displays Civil War canteens BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Those with a thirst for history won’t leave parched after viewing the impressive collection of Confederate and Union canteens at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center. On loan from the President of the Siege and Battlefield Comission Larry Mangus, the seven rare canteens are part of a larger trove of approximately 74. “I have been bringing parts of my

extensive collection to the interpretive center for a couple of years now and enjoy the opportunity to share my thrilling finds and conversation pieces with others. Over the years, I have accumulated a vast assortment of canteens, way more than my wife would like for me to have,” said Mangus with a laugh. “The seven I have on display are unique ones which you won’t typically see carried by reenactors or showcased in mu-
