Monday parade honors veterans BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Veterans past and present will be on display Monday. The 13th Annual Veterans Day Parade is slated for 10 a.m. through downtown Corinth. “It looks like it is going to be a great day,” said parade organizer Bill Huff. “We have about 60 who have applied and people are still calling.” Each year special recognition is given to a different branch of the military. The National Guard is set to be honored this season with Col. John Rhodes of the Mississippi Army National Guard’s 155th Brigade Combat Team serving as grand marshal. The parade, which will follow the normal parade route in Corinth, is scheduled to take place rain or shine, according to Huff. “Those planning to be in the parade need to be here at 9:30 a.m.,” said the organizer. Following the parade, a ceremony will take place at the courthouse. The annual Ameri-

work has been under way in the past week. The city issued a building permit for the project in September to Welch Restaurant LLC for a $350,000 restaurant facility. Jimmy John’s is headquartered in Illinois and has locations in 40 states. The restaurant offers a variety of sub

sandwiches and touts delivery to customers. Jimmy John’s was founded in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud. The old restaurant building was demolished earlier this year. It had sat vacant for some time and was briefly set to make way for a new Dollar General store, but those plans were withdrawn by the developer.

Machinery Pete coming to ag show BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Machinery Pete is coming back to the Alcorn County Farm Machinery-Lawn & Garden Show. The cameras of RFD-TV are also making the trip. Greg Peterson, aka Machinery Pete, is well known in the agriculture business. His “Machinery Show” is televised on RFD-TV. “The national attention he brings will be good for our show and everyone in the community,” said Crossroads Arena Operations Manager Greg Moss. Moss received word from Peterson Friday of his plans to be at the show. “He will shoot the auction and get four Machinery Pete segments for upcoming episodes of the “Machinery Show” while he is here,” said Moss. Two arena board members were also on hand when Moss got the news.

“This is just another positive that has fallen into place for us,” said board member Sam Tull. “I want to commend Greg and Cindy (Davis) for their work on getting this done,” added board chairman Dr. Hardwick Kay. Peterson, who has been tracking auction prices on all types of farm and construction equipment since 1989, is known as the most trusted source for used equipment values on the internet. “It should be big fun,” said Peterson. “I will promote the event and auction in advance and also do live Facebook/Twitter posts.” He is also set to work in YouTube videos in advance of the show. The show, set for January 17-19, was billed as the largest agricultural-based trade show in Northeast Mississippi in its first year. “Last year we had in excess of $5 million in equipment with the

can Legion stew fund-raiser will also be part of the festivities. This year the annual event is taking place a day after Veteran's Day. The celebrated holiday falls on Sunday this time around, pushing the annual parade to Monday. Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is often marked by parades and church services. “Our veterans are part of an unbroken chain of men and women who have served our country with honor and distinction,” said President Barack Obama in proclaiming Nov. 11 as Veterans Day on Wednesday. “Their sacrifices have helped secure more than two centuries of American progress, and their legacy affirms that no matter what confronts us or what trials we face, there is no challenge we cannot overcome.” Those wanting to be part of the parade can call Huff at 2845082.

auction selling around $3 million,” said Tull. DeWitt Auctions of Sikeston, Mo. will be in charge of the usedmachinery auction again this year. “The name DeWitt will bring a lot of people,” said Kay. “They are the premier auctioneer in this part of the country,” added Tull. RFD-TV can be seen by DIRECTV subscribers on channel 345 and by DISH Network subscribers on channel 231. The station is home to the most comprehensive lineup of agriculturebased programs. The latest agriculture news and technology can be viewed on the station. “People can get a taste on what they will be seeing by viewing RFD-TV,” said Moss. Outgoing Alliance Board of Directors CEO Brian McCullen is slated to review the year while incoming CEO Brett Marlar will discuss goals for the upcoming season. Twelve restaurants are expected to take part in Taste of Corinth. “They will be bringing their signature dishes for members to try out,” added Rinehart. Mississippi Business Journal honors Corinth High graduate BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Corinth native Cindy Strickland Brinson is racking up some high honors in the world of business. Brinson was recently named one of the state’s Leading Business Women for 2012 by the “Mississippi Business Journal.” Brinson is the director of sales for Hilton Jackson in the state capitol. After graduating Corinth High School in 1991, she continued her education at Northeast Mississippi Community College and the University of Mississippi. Brinson, 39, said being honored as one of the state’s top

business women has been one of the most amazing experiences she’s ever had. “I was honestly in shock,” she said of the moment she was notified of her nomination. “It’s always a shock when you’re up for something as prestigious as this.” Since appearing in the special issue of the “Mississippi Business Journal” — which has a statewide circulation — Brinson has received letters of congratulations from corporations across the state, flowers and even an edible fruit arrangement. The honor will be something she’ll have for the rest of her life, Brinson said.

“It goes a long way, and makes me feel extremely proud of the things I’ve accomplished,” she said. “But it could’ve have been accomplished without the team I’ve worked with and the people who mentored me.” Among those inspiration people, Brinson counts teachers in Corinth, Booneville and Oxford. Throughout her career, these educators have been a source for inspiration. In particular, she cites her band teacher, Charles Ellington, who helped her find the willpower to do well in school. “When I took his class was when I started excelling in

school,” said Brinson. “”I wasn’t a good school-kid before that.” One of her main inspirations has been her sister and best friend, Katie Draper. “She’s been my hero for my whole life. I always look up to her,” said Brinson. She also thanks her parents, Corinth’s Doug and Judy Strickland, for being proud of her all her life and pushing for the things they want for their daughter. “Really, the list is endless,” Brinson said. “Corinth is where I was born and raised, where I came from, and I’m very proud to say it's where I’m from.”
