Retired firefighter dies in home fire BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian

MICHIE, Tenn. — The Crossroads area has suffered a second fatal house fire accident in a horrible one-day span. A 24-year veteran of the Michie Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department died in a house fire

with a smile and usually some corny joke. He was family,” said Clark. Whitaker served in Vietnam flying helicopters, and never had any problems with heights, doing high tower maintenance, according to Clark. “He was loved by his family

on Monday night. Kello Whitaker, 75, was a retired United States Army veteran and was a Purple Heart recipient. “The fire service is about service and he always gave it his all,” said Michie Fire Chief Shirley Clark. “He could do whatever he was asked to do, always

and friends because he was a caring and decent person,” added Clark. “He will be missed.” Whitaker is the second fire fatality in the Crossroads area this week. Carolyn Dunn of Farmington died Tuesday at the Regional Medical Center (MED) in Mem-

phis from injuries she sustained in an early Monday morning house fire on Alcorn County Road 100. Whitaker retired from the Michie Fire Department in a selfless move a few years ago Please see FIRE | 2

Lawsuit against sheriff dismissed BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A federal judge dismissed with prejudice the sexual harassment lawsuit filed against the Alcorn County sheriff and Alcorn County. An order dismissing the suit was entered last week following a motion to dismiss by plaintiff Michelle L. Cohoon-Loyd and the defendants, according to court records. The parties jointly agreed to end the lawsuit.

Cohoon-Loyd, who worked directly for Sheriff Charles Rinehart, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in February, alleging that she suffered a sexually hostile work environment and retaliation when she brought the claims to light. The previously filed answer to the lawsuit denied all of the allegations and noted that Cohoon-Loyd voluntarily relinquished her employment with the sheriff’s department.

The call is going out to those in need of help this Christmas to make that need known to the Lighthouse Foundation. Registration is now underway for the 19th annual Lighthouse Foundation Toy Store. The outreach effort helps struggling families provide Christmas gifts for their children to ensure that every child has something special under the tree on Christmas morning. Foundation Executive Director Gary Caveness said registration has been slower than usual so far and he knows there are people hurting and struggling who need help. The Toy Store program is there to help them, but they have to take the first step by registering. “It’s absolutely essential that

they register,” he said. The foundation bases its fundraising and purchasing for the Toy Store on the number of people registered and it can be difficult to accommodate those who seek help after registration concludes. Registration sessions will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon continuing through Thursday, Nov. 20. There will also be a pair of evening registration sessions on Thursday, Nov. 13 and Thursday, Nov. 20 beginning at 6 p.m. for those unable to attend one of the daytime sessions. All sessions are held at the foundation’s building on South Johns Street in Corinth. Those registering for help should bring a photo ID; proof of residency in Alcorn County (such as a utility bill, rent or mortgage statement or other

official paperwork showing where they live) and a Social Security card and birth certificate for each child they are registering. The Toy Store runs on community donations and volunteers. Last year more than 1,500 children received gifts through the program and Caveness said they couldn’t do it without the support of the community. He asks everyone to look into their hearts and help make Christmas brighter for these hurting families by contributing to the effort. Donations may be mailed to The Lighthouse Foundation, P.O. Box 2121, Corinth, MS 38835. Those interested in learning more about the program or in volunteering their time can call 662-286-0091 for more information.

In honor of Veterans Day, American Legion Post 6, its auxiliaries and riders will host their 9th Annual Freedom Ride. The charity event will be held Saturday at the Post 6, located at 511 South Tate Street and Fulton Drive, behind Kmart. Registration for the 70-mileride will begin at 9:30 a.m. Kick stands will go up at 11 a.m. This year’s ride will follow a new route and be led by ALR Member and newly elected Police Chief, Ralph Dance and ALR Member, Deputy Chief and Constable of Post 1, Chuck Hinds. “All proceeds from Saturday’s events will be used for veterans’ programs in our community,” said Chaplain of the Department of Mississippi Tina Hurst. “We will also have vendors set up with arts, crafts, jewelry, clothing and leather items. All ven-

dors are welcome to join.” Set-up is free, but those who make a profit are urged to give a donation. “No electrical outlets will be available. So, keep that in mind when deciding what to bring,” said Hurst. “We also ask that vendors not sell food since we will be selling food.” Participating vendors should be set up and ready by 10 a.m. Featured activities and entertainment will include a car and tractor show, recorded music and performances by a Michael Jackson impersonator. “David Killough will be bringing his Shetland ponies for a kids pony ride,” said Hurst. The Air Evac helicopter will be on-site along with Bobby McDaniel who will be cooking up Boston Butts. Whole Butts will be sold Please see RIDE | 2

KOSSUTH — Santa Claus is coming to Kossuth. Members of the town are hoping others follow for the first Christmas parade in Aggie Land. “Every small town has a parade and we have been wanting to do one for years,” said parade organizer Anthia Follin-King. “We are proud of Kossuth and its heritage and want to celebrate with a parade. The parade, set for Dec. 13 at 4 p.m., will follow the route of annual Kossuth High School Homecoming parade. “We want all churches, schools and organizations to participate,” said Follin-King. Kossuth Mayor Donald Pace and his wife, Marjorie will be grand marshals for the “Hometown Christmas” event. (For more information about the Kossuth parade call Follin-King at 731-614-6513.)

Awards, accomplishments and good food will highlight tonight’s The Alliance Annual Membership Meeting and Taste of Corinth. The events will be held at the Crossroads Arena conference room with a social hour set for 5 p.m. The meeting will get started at 6 p.m., with awards and the Taste of Corinth to follow. “Our annual meeting gives us a chance to honor our members,” said Marketing and Membership Coordinator Kelly Rinehart. “We will be talking about some of our accomplishments from the past year and present a few of our key goals for the future.” Heidi Smith, TVA Economic Development General Manager,

will act as the meeting’s keynote speaker. Smith is responsible for business recruitment and retention and community development efforts for TVA. She is a certified facilitator and offers training for developing strong customer relationships with many area organizations. Three Spirit of Service Awards will be bestowed upon deserving residents during the awards portion of the event. Past winners of the honors choose the winners for the current year. “Everyone knows a handful of people who are helping the community every time you turn around,” said Community Development Director Andrea Rose. “We’ve had a really strong pool to choose from the last several years,

and we want that to continue.” The categories include spirit of service, lifetime achievement and youth leadership. Last year’s winners were Lamar Keith, Tom Chartres and Savannah Smith. Since 1992, the awards have been The Alliance’s primary means of recognizing outstanding community volunteers. In addition to the Spirit of Service honors, The Alliance will present a couple of others, including the ambassador of the year, and Main Street Corinth will present the Jack Hora Award to an honoree chosen by the board of directors of Main Street.
