BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

Christmas is just around the corner and while for some families it means visions of presents under the tree, for others it means worries about how to afford gifts for their children. The Lighthouse Foundation is once again ready to help those struggling families in Alcorn County with the 2017 edition of its annual Toy Store program. Registration to receive help from the program begins this Thursday, Nov. 2 and continues each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon

at the foundation’s building on South Johns Street. These sessions will continue through Nov. 16. There will also be an evening registration session on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for those unable to attend one of the morning sessions. A final registration day for anyone unable to attend one of the earlier sessions is set for Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. “With me going over there, it means someone will get to come home,” said Landon Tucker, as he prepares for his third deployment overseas with the Mississippi National Guard. The police captain is one of three Corinth officers in the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team set to mobilize in support of Operation Spartan Shield in Kuwait next spring. Tucker and fellow offi-

cers Mathew Thorne and Erin Hill will join many other local soldiers in the year long deployment in the Middle East to proTucker mote regional self-reliance and increase security. Although it will be Tucker’s third tour of duty, leaving home has never been easy for

the 39-year-old. “Saying goodbye to family is the hardest thing,” he said. “No deployment is ever easy. It’s a stressful time for the family, but all things are in God’s hands.” As a member of the 114th Field Artillery Regiment based in Starkville, Tucker first left home for Iraq in 2005. He was single and only 26. “My mom and dad sent me care packages full of simple Please see DEPLOYMENT | 6A

Allison Hurley Cornelius, daughter of Havis Hurley, confirmed Friday afternoon that all projects for Havis’ Kids will continue as planned. Questions arose after news spread that Havis’ Kids founder Havis Hurley is currently in the hospital battling serious health issues. Even despite his condition, his daughter said he was sitting up in bed making calls to be sure everything went as planned for the McAlisters fundraising event which took place last Tuesday, Oct. Oct. 24. “He wouldn’t want this. If he knew I was talking about it to the newspaper, he wouldn’t want it. He’s so used to loving others ... and doing for others that he doesn’t stop to let oth-

er love on him and do for him. He’s been that way his whole life,” said Hurley Cornelius. “It’s never been about Havis. He has never wanted it to be about him,” said Annie Richardson, family friend, who accompanied Cornelius as moral support when she spoke with the Daily Corinthian. Cornelius knows where her father’s priorities are — the kids. He’s always thinking of the kids. Corinth-Alcorn County Special Needs Kids group director Havis Hurley is married to Cheryl Hurley and has two children living in Corinth — his daughter, and a son, Mark Hurley. “Lifting as We Climb” is more than just a theme for a statewide group of women’s clubs meeting in Corinth this weekend — it’s a way of life. The Mississippi State Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs and Youth Affiliates is holding its 109th annual state convention continuing through today at the Crossroads Arena. The event brings together a big crowd of club members from across the state for a weekend of fellowship, learning and encouragement. The weekend’s theme was “Lifting as We Climb.” Gwendolyn Bishop Chambliss, a club member from

Corinth and the daughter of late Corinth Mayor ES Bishop, said the theme reflects their focus on helping their communities and, especially young people, achieve achieve success and remember that in working together everyone can achieve more.
