Speaker Gunn brings tour to Corinth BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Have an idea for state lawmakers? Mississippi Speaker of the House Philip Gunn will be listening on Tuesday. His Mississippi Solutions tour in the coming week includes a stop at Corinth City Hall at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The town hall-style meeting will take place upstairs in the board room and is scheduled to last an hour. “As a conservative, I firmly believe

that the solutions to our problems won’t come from government,” Gunn said. “They will come from the hardworking people of Mississippi. This is your chance to join us and let us know your thoughts.” The sessions are described as forums “for all legislators, citizens and the press.” Gunn (R-Clinton) is seeking ideas to help fix the core issues Mississippians struggle with daily. The speaker

conducted a similar tour last year. He is the first Republican speaker of the house in 136 years, having taken the role after Prentiss County’s Billy McCoy relinquished the title. The representative for District 56 (Hinds, Madison, Warren and Yazoo counties) is an attorney who was elected in 2004 and is a native of Hattiesburg. He has served as chairman of the Republican House Conference since it was formed in 2006 and has

served on the executive committee of the Mississippi Republican Party. As an attorney at Wells, Marble, Hurst PLLC in Ridgeland, he practices primarily in insurance defense and civil litigation. The itinerary for the tour includes Clinton, Clarksdale and Olive Branch on Monday; Oxford, Corinth and Starkville on Tuesday; Vicksburg and Natchez on Wednesday; and Laurel and Pascagoula on Thursday.
