For decades downtown Corinth prospered without a bake shop, leaving hungry travelers searching for a yummy sweet treat to fill the void.

Enter SoCo Bake Shop and owner Laura Albright, who since opening in June has settled quit nicely into her quaint establishment on Taylor Street in the newly formed SoCo District. Albright, along with master baker

Amanda Patrick, serves up the freshest, made-from-scratch just like mama used to make breakfast and dessert goods from inside the small bake shop. “It amazes me how long Corinth went without one,” she said. “It’s such a quintessential southern thing for a small town to have a bake shop.” When Albright first learned her business had won the Daily Corinthian 2014 Readers Choice award for Best New Business, she was shocked. “I never gave it any thought -- I knew the contest was going on, but I never thought people would vote for us,” Albright said. “I’m so thankful for everyone who voted and for our new and returning customers. It’s really all very humbling.” The owner said business has been very good and she attributes much of her shop’s

success to word of mouth. “We have done very little traditional advertising,” said Albright. “We have mostly done social media -- Instagram is genius for us because it’s free and we all eat with our eyes first.” The shop’s menu is ever expanding with new items, but Albright said customer favorites will always be offered as long as they can continue to find and purchase fresh ingredients in the area. “Cinnamon rolls are by far our biggest seller,” she said. “There’s just no where else in Corinth where a person can get a fresh, made-from-scratch cinnamon roll.” SoCo’s scones made with local blueberries is a big hit, as is the shop’s pimento cheese which comes by the pound. “Amanda calls it job security,” Albright said. “As soon as we make pimento cheese, it’s

gone.” The duo’s catering business is far exceeding expectations. “We do cakes, cookies and pretty much anything people want for receptions and parties,” added Albright. “We’re been staying busy lately with bigger orders.”

The shop’s fastest selling tasty selection has been Patrick’s mouthwatering macarons. When the young baker whips up a few dozen of the French inspired sweet meringue-based confections, people come running ... literally.

CorinthDental is announcing the retirement of Dr. Spencer Lee effective September 24th of this year. Dr. Lee graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1969 as the Merit Award recipient and dedicated his professional career to providing patients with outstanding dental care in Corinth and the surrounding area. Spencer has held prominent leadership positions in many local, state, and national organizations including the Corinth Dental Society, the Mississippi Dental Association, MS State Board of Dental Examiners, and delegate to the ADA, President of the University of Tennessee Dental Alumni Association.
