WIN job fair offers hope
Man hit by train
BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Daisha Colom came looking for work. The Ripley woman has been without a job since a company cutback in July. She left Thursday’s Northeast Mississippi WIN Job Fair thinking a job is right around the corner. “I have always heard job fairs do not really benefit you,” said Colom. “But after meeting with some companies at this fair, I feel confident I will get a job.” Colom wasn’t so confident before attending the event at the Crossroads Arena. “It’s hard to get a job around here,” she said. “You just have to keep a positive mind and your resume updated.” “Those are the type of people we want to attract,” said said Adam Todd, director of the Governor’s Job Fair Network. “You have to be touched by it to truly see what a great event it is,” A steady stream of folks looking for employment kept companies busy during the morning. “People were ready before the doors opened,” said job fair committee member Amanda Johnson. “Several first-time

A man possibly hunting near railroad tracks was hit by a train in Corinth Thursday afternoon. Lonnie Jones, 66, of 103 Oakland School Road, Corinth, was taken to a hospital by air ambulance after the accident was reported at 2:38 p.m. It happened where the railroad passes just beyond the dead end of Spring Forest Estates. Capt. Ralph Dance of the Corinth Police Department said officers found Jones lying partially under the train, somewhat conscious, with visible lacerations. The train hit the man, who was carrying a .22 caliber rifle, but did not run over him. The train conductor told police when he spotted the man, Jones appeared to be on his hands and knees, trying to crawl off the tracks. The conductor was not able to stop the train before hitting the man. Dance speculated that Jones had fallen before the train’s arrival. An ambulance took the man to a helicopter at Country Lane Apartments, and traffic was diverted on Proper Street before the helicopter took flight.

The 53-foot trailer looked out of place during the Northeast Mississippi WIN Job Fair. Until job seekers stepped inside. Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Division of Workforce Training and Economic Development unveiled its latest project Thursday at the annual job fair. The Training Innovation Growth Excellence Results Lab, or TIGER Lab for short, rolled into Crossroads Arena to help both district employers and those looking for a job. “Those jobs of sitting around all day drinking coffee are gone,” said Dustin Meeks, NE Workforce instructor. “There are jobs out there where you can make a lot of money, you

A dormant commercial property is coming back to life with the opening of Zaxby’s. Known for its menu of chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads, the restaurant at the corner of South Parkway and U.S. Highway 72 is set to open on Monday, Oct. 6. “We hope the people of Corinth come give us a try,” said Chad Martin, one of the partners in Dixie Chicken LLC. “We can’t wait to open the doors.” They were looking for a location to open another restaurant when the former Golden Rule building caught the attention of one of the other Dixie Chicken
