Kossuth High School earns ‘star’ status BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
School accountability results made public today show Kossuth High School earning the top “star” school status while two other county schools received a rating of “academic watch.” The state board of education is expected to approve the 2012 accountability results at its meeting today. With the Corinth School District’s participation in the Excellence for All pilot program, the district has only one school that is being assigned a rating this year — Corinth Elementary — which was rated “high performing,” the same as last year. The school had a Quality Distribution Index (QDI) of 194, an increase, and met the growth requirement. From highest to lowest, the ratings that can be earned are star (equivalent to an “A”), high performing (B), successful (C),
academic watch (D) and low performing (F). Kossuth High School improved on last year’s rating of high performing. “I would like to commend the Kossuth High School students, parents, faculty, staff and Principal Matt Smith for their diligence in attaining this prestigious accomplishment,” said Superintendent Gina Rogers Smith. The Alcorn School District improved its district-wide rating from successful to high performing. On the lower end of the scale, however, two schools were rated academic watch — Biggersville High School and Kossuth Middle School. Smith said the district’s principals had extensive training throughout the summer and will continue examining the test data to formulate strategies for improvement. “Our administrators have
identified areas of excellence in which to build upon as well as areas that have the potential for growth,” she said. “The Principal Evaluation Model, for which our district has been selected as a pilot district, will afford our principals the opportunity to develop academic and organizational goals that are specific to the individual schools’ growth and achievement.” Increasing its QDI to 188 helped Rienzi Elementary improve from successful to high performing. Repeating with the high performing label are Alcorn Central Elementary, Alcorn Central Middle and Kossuth Elementary. Biggersville Elementary rose from last year’s academic watch to successful. Alcorn Central High and Glendale Elementary retained their “successful” ratings. “Both Glendale Elementary and Alcorn Central High School

School board candidates not certified
Fair keeps rolling along
BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The field of candidates for three county school board seats has been trimmed from eight to six. County election commissioners met this week to review the qualifications of those who submitted papers and found that two did not meet the eligibility requirements. In the 4th district race, commissioners determined that Billy Miller lives in the fourth supervisor district but is actually in the 5th school board district, said Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell. That will leave incumbent Mary Kathryn Coleman unopposed for reelection to another six-year term. In the crowded 2nd district race, the commissioners determined that Ronald Moore did not submit a sufficient number of signatures of qualified voters in the district. Some who signed are not registered voters and some are not residents of the district, leaving his petition short of the necessary 50 names, said Caldwell. The remaining candidates certified in the 2nd district race are David Boren, Jimmy Newcomb, Jeramie Roach and James Voyles. In the 3rd district, incumbent Carroll Morton will be unopposed for reelection. School board will appear on the Nov. 6 general election bal-

On this day in history 150 years ago Gen. Price and the Army of the West occupy Iuka and learn Rosecrans is not about to cross the river as they thought and is actually only 12 miles to the west in Jacinto. Unsure of what to do, Price does nothing but watch and wait.
