94% of local third graders pass test BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
More than 94 percent of all third graders at area schools were found to be proficient in reading last school year, according to final numbers released this week by the Missis-
sippi Department of Education. The latest Third Grade Reading Gate Assessment test score report includes scores from the initial, first and final retests for the Corinth School District and the Alcorn School District. The state-required test is de-
signed to measure reading proficiency of third-graders, and students who do not pass are retained. Statewide 92.34 percent of students passed, while 7.66 percent failed. The MDE report does not
give exact percentages for districts or schools that had a 95-percent pass rate or greater out of concerns doing so would single-out individual students. In the CSD, at least 95 percent of third-grade students passed the assessment over-
all. In the ASD, 94.51 percent passed, while 5.49 percent failed the test. Further breakdown showed Biggersville Elementary School, Glendale Elementary School, Please see SCORES | 6A

The Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is again looking to turn adorable pet photos into a much-needed fundraiser. The shelter has launched its fourth Pet Calendar Photo Contest for the 2016 edition of the calendar and hopes to fill it with some of the Crossroad area’s cutest pets. “The calendar is always one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” said Volunteer Shelter Director Charlotte Doehner. “It is always a delight to see great photos of pets from the community.” The contest is getting a new mode of entry and photo selection this year that organizers hope to see generate some excitement. While last year’s calendar featured 13 photos selected from the Crossroads Museum’s annual photo con-
test, this year’s entries are being taken online at alcornpets. com, where participants will upload photos and pay the fee. It costs a $25 donation to upload a photo. In return, the entrant gets a copy of the 2016 calendar. Deadline to enter is Sept. 25. All acceptable entries will be posted on the shelter’s Facebook page for voting on Sept. 28. Voting ends Oct. 9, and the photo with the most likes will win the cover spot on the calendar. The next top 12 with the most likes will have individual month photos. “But every photo that is entered will find a place in our calendar,” said Doehner. Photos must be in the JPEG or TIFF format and at least 6 megapixels/300 dpi or Please see CONTEST | 6A

Mississippi Silicon is nearing production in Burnsville of silicon metal that could find its way into computer chips, automobiles and even potato chips. “This is the first silicon metal production facility in North America in over 40 years,” said John Lalley, vice president - finance for the company. “Depending on what happens with some of the environmental rules, it might be the last.” Lalley discussed the company’s launch in a talk with Corinth Rotary Club last week. Installation is 99 percent complete on one of the company’s furnaces and 85 per-
