Teen allegedly steals Van crashes car, drives it to Ohio into apartment BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A 13-year-old who allegedly stole a vehicle and drove almost 700 miles is facing charges in Corinth and Ohio. After she was reported missing last week, the Corinth Police Department put out an alert identifying her as Acelon Spears. Capt. Dell Green said she potentially faces a charge

of motor vehicle theft. “We are referring the case to youth court,” he said. Because of her age, “We can’t issue a warrant and extradite her back down here.” The police department had not learned exactly what happened in Akron, Ohio, where the vehicle was recovered, but she is facing a criminal charge there also.

Spears was reported missing last Tuesday. Green said she came to Corinth with family and had been in the Corinth area for a couple of weeks. Last Tuesday evening, she stayed overnight with an individual on Main Street. That individual awoke to discover Spears and the vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Caliber, were gone.

Locals gather at courthouse in 12-hour vigil BY L.A. STORY lastory@dailycorinthian.com

Seeking comfort in faith and taking an opportunity to say ‘thank you,’ local individuals and businesses took time to remember the deadly terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which has come to be known simply as “9/11.” Many gathered in faith to read scripture or pray at a gathering held at the Alcorn County Courthouse in a 12-hour vigil Monday.

As an act of service, and part of honoring those who died, there were also containers for people to donate toward flood relief efforts for victims of the recent catastrophic hurricanes. One local business chose to remember 9/11 by honoring local law enforcement, fire fighters and 911 employees. Employees from both Corinth Cash Express offices brought handmade cards, signed by community members, as well as cakes and cupcakes as their way of

saying “thank you” to the ones who put themselves into harm’s way to serve and protect their communities. “It’s an honor to be part of this and be able to say ‘thank you’ to them,” said Corinth Cash Express employee Brittney Hughes. Katie Nelson, also a Cash Express employee, said the goal was to honor all branches of emergency response on such a Please see VIGIL | 2

Significant damage could be seen Monday morning after a van crashed into an apartment. The Corinth Police Department and EMS were on the scene after a 51-year-old Corinth resident David Walker crashed into apartment 66, Country Village Apartments, of Levee Road just after 10 a.m. In an initial report by the CPD, Walker was driving a dark blue, Ford Windstar, driving south on Levee Road when his vehicle left the road-

way, going off about 150 feet to hit the apartment. There appeared to be significant damage to the apartment, as the van hit the front door and an adjacent window and entered the residence. It was reported that Walker was the only occupant of the van at the time of the accident. According to a family member, Walker was transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center via ambulance where he was treated and released for minor injuries. There was no information regarding residents of the apartment or of any injuries.
