By L.A. Story IUKA — High percentage predictions for rain to sweep through the Crossroads area in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey has caused the postponement of the Iuka Heritage Festival. Secretary and Treasurer Sandra Medlin, along with Vendor Chairman Martha Biggs, both of the Iuka Heritage Festival Committee, announced Monday that the Iuka Heritage Festival has been postponed for this weekend and rescheduled for Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21. In a public statement, Medlin said, “We have been watching the weather for days in light of Hurricane Harvey. It was first thought that we would get the repercussions in our area Monday and Tuesday, possibly Wednesday. That changed once Harvey hit land and our forecast in Iuka has worsened each day throughout the weekend. At this time our chances

for rain stand at Thursday 80 percent, Friday 90 percent and Saturday at 50 percent.” Medlin said she and Biggs, along with three other committee members, had gone out to Mineral Springs Park Sunday evening to mark out vendor spaces. They had all been carefully monitoring the weather of the hurricane which is currently devastating areas of southeastern Texas with catastrophic flooding. As the storm moves slowly, rain predicted for the Crossroads area appears to run right into the festival’s planned dates. “If it even rains half the time they’re predicting, the park is going to be a muddy mess,” said Medlin. “If it’s raining on that day, the vendors will be sitting out there with their stuff getting wet and we just decided we needed to go ahead and call this.” The decision to cancel and

A Corinth man was killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking on U.S. Highway 72 West. Thirty-eight-year-old Tommy Devine was pronounced dead at the scene after the incident, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, according to an initial report by Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones. The accident reportedly happened after Devine’s vehicle ran off the road and down into a ravine off U.S. Highway 72 West near the Corinth-Alcorn County Airport. Jones said it seemed Devine’s vehicle was eastbound when it left the highway. It appears Devine had climbed up out of the ravine and was standing on the highway, possibly in an attempt to flag down help. The driver of a Ford Mustang reportedly came upon Devine and swerved in an attempt to avoid him, but the attempt was unsuccessful and Devine was hit. The name of the driver had not been released at the time of the report. The accident is currently under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Two-vehicle collision on Highway 22 hospitalizes one

MICHIE, Tenn. — A Corinth man faces charges after he was involved in a two-vehicle wreck that sent a Michie man to the hospital. According to The Independent Appeal, 65-year-old Jimmy W. Young of Michie, Tenn., was headed north on Highway 22 in his 2000 Ford F150 when 30-year-old Joshua W. Taylor of Corinth crossed into his lane. Young maneuvered his truck to avoid the collision when Taylor’s 2006 Chevy Impala corrected and reentered the proper lane, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report. The vehicles collided with the truck coming to rest in the middle of Highway 22. Taylor’s car came to rest partially off the road heading west. Young was transported from the scene via air ambulance to Regional One Health (The Med) in Memphis. He is listed in good condition.
