Along with his perspective on issues the United States faces today, U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly also spoke candidly about June’s congressional baseball shooting in Alexandria, Va. American Legion Perry A. Johns Post 6 hosted a gathering Thursday in which Kelly spoke and answered questions by attendees. During Kelly’s address to the group, he provided his insight regarding many current issues, most notably, Afghanistan and North Korea. He also briefly touched on the subjects of health care, tax reform, veteran’s affairs and immigration. After his initial address, he fielded questions from those gathered. Among those questions, one regarding congress’ plans on improving infrastructure was presented by Walnut Mayor Vicki Skinner. Kelly said that there was a focus on infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, but they needed to work on tax reform first. Actions regarding infrastructure could take place around spring of 2018, and he said the president, both houses and parties have said it was a priority. Thursday wrecks in the region included one near Kossuth causing serious injury and another in Union County claiming the life of a Booneville man. Paul Settlemires, 58, of Ripley, was the driver injured in a one-vehicle crash near Kossuth about 2:30 p.m., and Nathan B. Gray, 23, of Booneville, died in a separate collision with a tractor-trailer in Union County, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Settlemires was taken by air ambulance to Magnolia Regional Health Center, according
to MHP. Traffic backed up for a long distance on Mississippi Highway 2 as officials worked the scene of the crash. Settlemires was traveling westbound on the highway in a 2012 Dodge when he apparently lost control, and the vehicle rolled over several times just east of Kossuth. The pickup was severely damaged, and the man had to be rescued from the crushed cab of the vehicle. Examples range from formerly serving on the Main Street Board and sponsoring competitions during the Slugburger Festival, to working as a volunteer to promote fundraising with area school systems and Cub Scouts. Recently, he was asked to join the board of the Commission on the Future of Alcorn County. A 1989 Alcorn Central High School graduate, he went on to study marketing at Northeast Mississippi Community College and Belhaven University in Jackson. He is the practice administrator at Garrett Eye Clinic, where he oversees all operations, marketing and drives customer service. Jennifer, his wife of 20 years, has been in practice for over 12 years. They have two sons, 10-year-old Jon Worth and 6-year-old Jack.
