Field(s) of Dreams: Park plan set BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Now past the possibility of being put to a public vote, the park financing plan got final approval from the Board of Supervisors on Monday to move forward. Monday was the deadline for the filing of a protest against

the planned bond sale of up to $5.75 million to cover the expansion cost for Crossroads Regional Park. It would have taken a petition with 1,500 signatures of voters to take the bond issue to a referendum. With no opposition filed, the board passed a “no protest” resolution to move forward.

The board did allow remarks by 2nd District resident Jon Newcomb, who requested to be on the agenda to discuss the bond plan. Based on his conversations with other residents, he said people are “really not against having this to a certain extent,” but they feel the amount of the bond is too

Olive Branch and Southaven. Board President Lowell Hinton said he believes the people are behind the plan, and new Park Director Ray Holloway said this bond project will help the park serve the community. “When you build it, they’ll be Please see PARK | 2

Public hearing set on county budget BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

County supervisors received another round of budget requests on Monday and set a public hearing on the proposed budget. The fiscal year 2015 budget will go to a public hearing at 9 a.m. on Sept. 15, which is the deadline for local governments to finalize their budgets. The Board of Supervisors has prepared a proposed budget with no change to the millage levy for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. Among the requests coming

to the board Monday was the Veterans Service Office, and with that came a plea from a group of local veterans to consider a pay raise for Veterans Service Officer Pat Ray. The board took that discussion into executive session. The office is in the proposed budget at $88,775, which is unchanged except for the 15 percent reduction in health insurance costs for the coming year. Austin Digby never gave anything less than his best on the soccer field. The Corinth Sportsplex wants to keep the late Corinth High School soccer player’s love of the game alive through a scholarship. Executive Director Shane Casabella and Sportsplex board members have established the Austin Digby Soccer Scholarship. “The soccer community in the area would like to introduce as many youth to the game as possible and at the same time honor the life of a wonderful young man,” said Casabella. Digby, 17, would have been a junior at CHS this year. He died

from complications of a serious brain injury on Aug. 12 following a wreck on Aug. 3 in the Oakland Baptist Church parking lot.
