MHP steps up school zone patrols BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

Motorists should watch their driving in local school zones or expect to get hit with a ticket. The Mississippi Highway Patrol has stepped up enforcement in school zones throughout Northeast Mississippi in an

effort to make the roads safer for students and parents. MHP Troop F Public Affairs Officer Trooper Ray Hall said the patrol recently conducted a three-day period of zero tolerance saturation patrols in school zones across the nine counties covered by Troop F, including

Alcorn, Prentiss, Tishomingo and Tippah counties. Hall noted there are 31 state highways located near public schools within Troop F’s area. Troopers issued 146 citations during the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in these areas during the three-

day enforcement push. “This will be a continued effort to ensure our children are kept safe while traveling to and from school. Most of the school zones have decreased speed limits, extra cautions, and congested traffic during school hours, so we want to do our part

in helping maintain a safe traffic flow through those areas,” said Hall. MHP is determined to make sure children are protected and troopers will continue to patrol these areas heavily throughout the school year, said the trooper.

Corinth Artist Guild gallery Booneville adopts

firearms ordinance BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

The open carrying of firearms and other weapons will be prohibited at many locations overseen by the city of Booneville under an ordinance passed unanimously by aldermen Tuesday. The new law, which goes into effect immediately, is designed to protect the public and align the city’s policies with what is allowed under state statute, said City Attorney Daniel Tucker, who drafted the ordinance at the request of the board. The law prohibits the open carrying of firearms at Booneville City Hall, all public parks and related fields and facilities, any location where public meetings of the city take place and all parades, official political meetings and any non-firearm related school or college athletic event. The law applies to firearms as well as stun guns, knives and any other item that could be used as a weapon. Tucker said the law is in-

tended to clarify the city’s rules in light of Mississippi House Bill 2 which was scheduled to take effect July 1 but remains mired in a court challenge. The state law would allow the open carrying of firearms in any location where it is not strictly prohibited. Tucker said the law is unclear and he has been unable to get clear guidance on exactly how the bill will be implemented if it does become law. The new city ordinance states the purpose is to protect citizens in sensitive locations and reduce the risk of violence toward citizens and municipal locations. “This is just for the protection of our citizens,” said Tucker. He noted the new ordinance does not apply to those with existing concealed carry or enhanced concealed carry permits and the city will need to develop a policy for the police department to determine who has a valid permit if the question arises under the new ordinance.

Quilters piece together Curlee House support BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Piecemakers are sewing their support for historic preservation. A quilt made by the Cross City Piecemakers Quilt Guild is up for grabs in support of the ongoing efforts to preserve the VerandahCurlee House Museum. Chances will be sold and can be purchased at the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Guild member Gail Stables said

the quilters tried to come up with a look in keeping with the era of the home. “We call it the Civil War quilt, even though it doesn’t have Civil War fabrics in it,” she said. The entire guild was involved. “We decided on a pattern and color scheme and everybody brought their fabric in and we had a work day,” said Stables. “We had somebody cutting, somebody sewing, somebody pressing, and we did that a couple of more times
