Qualifying set for three seats on school board BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Qualifying is set to begin next week for three seats on the Alcorn School District Board of Education. The qualifying period opens on Wednesday, Aug. 8, and runs through Friday, Sept. 7. Qualifying paperwork must be submitted at the Circuit Clerk’s Office. A typical year for school board races has one or two seats up for election, but this year is different in that a majority of the seats will be on the ballot. It is a regular year for districts 3 and 4 to be on the ballot, but they are joined by the special election to replace the late Peggy Bain in district 2. The district 2 post will be open since Bain’s son, Dale Bain, who was appointed to serve until the special election, has said he will not seek election to the post. Peggy Bain was

a last-minute qualifier a couple of years ago and ran unopposed for the seat. The winners for districts 3 and 4 will serve six-year terms while the winner for district 2 will serve the four years remaining on Bain’s term. Incumbents for the other seats up for election are Carroll Morton, district 3, and Mary Kathryn Coleman, district 4. Prospective candidates must live in the appropriate district and submit a petition with the signatures of at least 50 registered voters in the district. School board qualifying will complete the lineup for the November general election. The nonpartisan school board races are among a hodgepodge of down-ballot decisions in this presidential election year, including the five county election commissioner posts, two Congressional races and a state Supreme Court seat.

Organizers of the annual School Prayer Walk are asking for the community’s support as they pray for the safety of Alcorn County’s children. “I truly believe that God has protected our children and kept our schools safe each year because of the prayers that have been prayed over them and the School Prayers Walks,” said Kathryn “Kat” Chapman, co-

ordinator of the Alcorn Baptist Prayer Ministry. Participants are asked to meet at a school of their choice on Saturday at 9 a.m. or any time between 9 and 11 a.m. Organizers have prepared a list of areas to focus their prayers, including love, truth, the school board, Christian teachers, support staff, special education decisions, failPlease see WALK | 2

Jody Lambert, an EMT/ Firefighter with the Farmington Fire Department, is one of several firefighters from around the state who will appear in the 2013 Mississippi Firefighters Calendar. The project is sponsored by the Mississippi Burn Foundation, formally known as the Mississippi Firefighters Memorial Burn Association. “Being asked to take part in the calendar is an honor,” said Robby Scucchi, chairperson for the calendar, now in its third year of publication. “It is lots of fun and for a good cause.” Lambert joins firemen from Cleveland, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Starkville, Gulf Coast,

Brookhaven, Vicksburg and the Greater Jackson area to include Jackson, Pearl, Brandon and the Reservoir on the 2013 calendar. “Over 80 firefighters from across the state were nominated and the selection process was extremely tough for the committee, made up of two photographers, two graphic artists and three community representatives,” noted the chairperson. This year, funds will be donated to the building fund of the new Burn Lodge that will be located on the grounds of the Joseph M. Still Burn and Reconstructive Centers Inc. at Please see CALENDAR | 2

On this day in history 150 years ago President Jefferson Davis orders that any officers captured from Gen. John Pope’s army be treated as felons rather than prisoners of war. This is in retaliation for Pope’s threat to execute citizens captured as spies near his lines.
