City faces ‘most important vote’ Wreck kills 1 BY JEBB JOHNSTON

Corinth residents can learn all about the city’s proposed Future Fare program at a public meeting on Tuesday. It is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the auditorium of Corinth High School. Corinth is set to vote on the special tax levy of 12 mills on Aug. 21. The tax levy would affect property taxes and car tags, and the funds generated would go to a long list of street paving and a range of other possible projects.

“To me, this is probably the most important vote that will have ever been held in Corinth,” said Mayor Tommy Irwin. “This is about our future, about our children, and will we do those things necessary to help them stay here once they get their education? Will we have a town where we address infrastructure and a town that is inviting, where people want to live and employers want to invest in?” Irwin will make the case for Future Fare in a presentation and field questions from

citizens. Everyone will have an opportunity to get a copy of a booklet detailing the tax impact, the city’s finances and the proposed street paving. It also contains the full text of the Future Fare resolution. In addition to $3.6 million of street paving throughout the city, funds generated by the tax levy could be used for drainage work, grant match funding, improvements of corridor entrances, signage, handicap accessibility enhancement and strategic planning.

The mayor said there is no grant that is going to fix the city’s infrastructure issues and that citizens must step up. “Are we going to be the town people look to as progressive or continue on where our budget cannot keep up with the demands?” he said. “This work is for today and for our children tomorrow.” It is estimated the special tax levy would generate $1 million per year. It would expire after five years, and citizens could vote to renew it.
