FARMINGTON — Board members gave approval for city officials to proceed in applying for a $125,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant on behalf of an assisted living facility. The approval was made during Tuesday’s meeting of the Mayor and the City of Farmington Board of Aldermen. Mayor Dale Fortenberry had requested the board’s approval to proceed with securing the ARC grant of a minimum of $125,000 on behalf of an assisted living facility, which is to be constructed within the city. Fortenberry said the grant would have a 30 percent match, but that those building the facility would cover that and the city only has to apply for the grant. The grant would provide assistance for utility connection to Farmington’s water and sewer system. Among the five stated goals of the ARC is to assist with “critical infrastructure,” which includes water/wastewater systems. No further information regarding the assisted living facility was available. In other board business: An equipment purchase for $499.96 was approved by the board for a new pole saw for trimming trees at the site of the new park. The board gave its approval for a grocery/personal need box which will allow people to come and get needed canned goods or personal hygiene items. It will be a free standing box to be installed on the northwest corner above the Town Hall. The request to install the box was made by Maranatha Baptist Church, which would stock and maintain it. As a new administration, the board approved to renew some existing policies. The policies in question were part of an agreement with the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department as drug and narcotic support.

Corinth aldermen gave approval to several zoning changes Tuesday evening. The meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen also saw action on the request for veterans’ parking spaces, ongoing property cleanup issues and a request to vacate a portion of Gant Street. A couple of interested properties owners were present regarding the zone change from heavy industrial to C-2 commercial for a stretch of Tate Street from near Turner Creek to the railroad tracks. “We are trying to maintain the corridor to the downtown and keep it more presentable and in keeping with what’s zoned C-2 on either side of it from the theater arts to the other side of the railroad,” said David Huwe, director of community development and planning. One property owner asked about the intent but did not voice an objection. The board approved the change. The board also approved a change to unify the zoning of the Alcorn County Co-op property to C-2 and a change of residential property to C-2 at the intersection of Bradley Road and Highway 72 for an unspecified commercial development. In other business: • The board approved the purchase of four veterans’ reserved parking space signs. The proposed locations are City Hall, the courthouse, the justice center and the library. Schools to host open house events BY ZACK STEEN

More than two dozen orientation and open house meetings are set for the upcoming week as Corinth and Alcorn County students get ready to head back to school. In the Corinth School District, the student and parent focused events are scheduled throughout next week, July 24-28. “Open houses and orientation sessions are a great opportunity for students and parents to meet their teacher, see the classroom and school, and ask questions they might have,” said Lee Childress, superintendent for city schools. “The open house is especially important at the elementary level because meeting the
Lee Childress Corinth School District superintendent teacher and seeing the school takes away some of the stress students have on the first day of school.” Childress said Pre-K and Kindergarten camps scheduled for next week are also a great opportunity for students to become more comfortable with their new
Annual genealogical fair hopes to fill in blanks BY JEBB JOHNSTON

Who do you think you are? The genealogical societies in Alcorn, Tishomingo and Prentiss counties think it’s a question worth answering, and they are ready to help with the Fifth Annual Old Tishomingo County Genealogy Fair, a free event set for Aug. 18 and 19. Registration is now open. “Every year it gets larger,” said Gale Judkins of the Alcorn County Genealogical Society. “We have a very good time, meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends and acquaintances who share this interest in family research.” Activities are planned throughout the two days, and
Gale Judkins participants can bring family information to share. Judkins enjoys filling in the blanks of her ancestors’ lives. “It’s the dash between the dates on their tombstones I want to know about — the life they lived during those two events,” she said. “Who were they? What did they do in their lives? Did they fight in our wars
or were they pacifists? Were they slave or free? What was going on in history during their lifetime and how did they fit into that? Did they live in town and own businesses or were they farmers? That’s interesting to me.” Friday, Aug. 18, events kick off at 1 p.m. at the genealogical library at the courthouse

The genealogical societies in the three counties that make up what used to be Old Tishomingo from 1837 to 1870 rotate the hosting of the event each year. It is also sponsored by the Mississippi Humanities Council. (To register, visit the ACGS online at www.avsia.com/acgs and click on the event link. An optional box lunch will be offered on Saturday.)
