A historic ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court declared Friday that same-sex couples now have the right to marry in all 50 states. Gay and lesbian couples
brated across the country, marriage licenses were issued by the thousands. In the Magnolia State, Attorney General Jim Hood said not yet. “The Supreme Court’s decision is not immediately effective in Mississippi,” he said.
“It will become effective when a federal appeals court in New Orleans lifts a hold on a gaymarriage court case.” Two lesbian couples and gayrights group, Campaign for Southern Equality, sued Mississippi last year over the state’s
1997 law and 2004 voter-approved constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. A federal judge overturned the ban, but put marriages on hold while the state appealed. Please see REACTION | 2

FARMINGTON — A local congregation is reaching out to show the community it cares. Farmington Baptist Church will host the “Farmington Community Independence Celebration” on Sunday evening at the church. “It will be a fun afternoon,” said church music minister Bryan Essary. “The celebration will be an outreach event to show the church is alive and well and that we love our community.” Activities begin at 6 p.m. with free barbecue and all the trimmings. The movie — “When the Game Stands Tall” — will also be shown behind the church on a 30x28 outside screen.
