Bain to serve on lottery study committee BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Local legislator Nick Bain has been tapped to serve on a new committee to study the possible creation of a Mississippi lottery. The committee, created by Republican Speaker of the House Philip Gunn, features nine members from across the state, including Bain, a Democratic Al-

corn County House member. “I’m honored to be asked by the speaker to participate in this panel,” said Bain, who shares Gunn’s opposition to the lottery. “No matter how I personally feel, I will look at this objectively.” Gunn said in late March that he would form a group to study the pros and cons of starting a state lottery. group met for the first time Wednesday. “I have been clear that I do not support a lottery,” said Gunn. “I have not changed my mind. I do not believe a lottery is based on sound economic policy, and it violates a number of conservative, Republican principles.” Please see COMMITTEE | 3A

Residents gather for National Day of Prayer BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

In His name, they prayed. Seven citizens from different walks of life removed their personal walls and stood before a crowded church on Thursday to pray as part of the National Day of Prayer. “We are called by different denominational names, but we all share Your name – we are one in Christ,” prayed local

physician Leonard Pratt. More than 100 people took part in the 66th annual event focused on mobilizing prayer in America and encouraging personal repentance and righteousness in the culture. The local prayer day was moved inside the Waldron Street Christian Church after rain showers forced the event from its normal venue on the foot steps of the Alcorn County Courthouse.

Corinth lawmaker Nick Bain offered prayer over federal, state and local government officials and law enforcement. “We praise Your name as the One Who holds all governments in Your Hand,” he said in prayer. Later Bain said he believed observing the National Day of Prayer is important for everyPlease see PRAYER | 2A
