The Lighhouse shines rays on Cameroon BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com
Corinth residents will have the opportunity to get “A Taste of Cameroon” this weekend at The Lighthouse. Presented by Cameroon native Setche Kwamu-Nana — an oft-relocating engineer who has lived in Corinth since August 2012 — the event prom-
ises a chance to enjoy learning, entertainment, food and fun. Kwamu-Nana said she typically moves around the country for her job every year, and she tries to make a positive impact on each community where she lives. “So far, this event has been one of the most successful ways I’ve been able to unique-
ly contribute to any local community on a larger scale,” she said. “I also do motivational speaking at churches, schools, youth clubs, etcetera. So, I have a passion for inspiring youths as well.” The program will teach participants about the real West African nation of Cameroon — its culture, history, food,
economics and more. KwamuNana believes her program will help enhance participants’ cross-cultural awareness, provide a better sense of global perspective, encourage an appreciation of diversity and foster open mindedness. She will share her culture shock experiences and answer any questions about Camer-
oon and Africa in general. Those in attendance will get to sample African food, culture, singing and dancing. It will also be a way to meet many new and different kinds of people. The event is also raising money to help support the Please see CAMEROON | 3A
Green Market part of busy local weekend Wreck sends 3 to hospital
BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Several new vendors are expected at Saturday’s Green Market, part of a busy weekend of activities in the Crossroads. “Our last market was a huge success, and we expect that again this time with the 10K run taking place,” said Museum Executive Director Brandy Steen. “This market will also be a really good time to shop for Mother’s Day gifts.” Organizers will keep an eye on the weather forecast, which promises a chance of showers continuing on Saturday after rain today. “If the ground is really sopping wet, we will move everybody onto the pavement,” said Steen. “If it is raining that morning but looks like it will clear, we will not cancel it. The committee will make the call that morning.” Something new this month will be metal sculpture creations by Isidro Aguilar. Those looking ahead to Father’s Day might consider handmade bowie knives by Russell White. Mike Davis of Dennis will be on hand with Adirondack furniture. He and his wife, Laura, began making the furniture after she wanted an adirondack chair and couldn’t find a good, affordable one to buy. They also make ottomans, tables and chaises longues for patios and

Three people were transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center following a three-vehicle accident on Highway 72 in front of Wendy’s. The accident happened shortly before noon Wednesday, said Corinth Police Capt. Scotty Harville. According to the police report, all three vehicles involved were pointed westbound in the outside lane of US 72 when the accident occurred. The crash happened near the traffic light at the intersection of 72 and Cass Street. James M. Witt, 62, of Bolivar, Tenn., was the driver of a 1993 Dodge Ram that failed to stop for the other cars waiting at the red light. Witt’s vehicle slammed into the rear of a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 51-year-old Rienzi resident Tina Thrasher. The impact knocked Thrasher’s vehicle into the back end of a 2007

Some local churches are going back in time when it comes to sharing the gospel. The congregations are bringing back a large tent for an “Old Time Tent Meeting” during its Alcorn County Crusade set to start Sunday night. “It all originated with five churches getting together for a spring meeting the last few years,” said Shiloh Baptist Church pastor Bro. Philip Caples. “Once we let it be known that other churches were invited to take part, it took off and became more of an outreach.” Churches located on the west end of the county – Shiloh, Brush Creek, Bethlehem, Tishomingo Chapel and Lone Oak – had all previously roPlease see REVIVAL | 2A
Over a hundred members of the community gathered at the Alcorn County Courthouse on Thursday to pray for the problems facing America today in observance of the National Day of Prayer. “This day can’t come soon enough for me,” Mayor Tommy Irwin said of the annual event. “We should do this every day of the year. It’s not only our nation that needs prayer, but our state and city. It’s a wonderful place we live in, but Corinth and her citizens need prayers too.” The event included prayers for government, media, education, church, family and the military. led by local church leaders— Rev. On this day in history 150 years ago The 1,600 men of Col. Abel Streight’s Mule Brigade are tricked into surrendering to Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who only has 600 men. The raid was a bust, but successful in keeping the cavalry of Forrest and Roddey out of Mississippi during the commencement of the Vicksburg Campaign.
