Tour benefits house restoration

A busy weekend in downtown Corinth wrapped up on Saturday on the grounds of the Verandah-Curlee House.

The eighth installment of the Home and Garden Tour featured something for everyone from home and garden information to a silent auction, basket weaving and a vintage carnival for kids.

“We’ve had a wonderful event this year,” said event chair Stacy Brooks. “There were lots of other events going on this weekend, and I think we held our own pretty well.”

The historic house was open for tours on Saturday. As

guides gave history lessons on the house, a gardening guru was entertaining more than 150 people outside.

“Felder Rushing brought out a good crowd for us,” said Brooks of the retired Mississippi Extension Service horticulture specialist. “He gave everyone a different spin on gardening.”

Rushing is known for his truck gardens planted in the bed of pickups. A garden planted in his father’s 1988 pickup has been driven more than 500,000 miles as he travels across the country.

On Saturday, he brought it to Corinth.

Interior designer Tracy Proctor was the featured guest speaker on Friday.

A vintage carnival gave organizers a chance to educate kids on the history of the house, as well.

“Each game featured a card that told a little history about the house,” added Brooks.

Proceeds from the Verandah-Curlee House Home and Garden Tour will benefit the continued restoration of the home.

Corinth adds second assistant principal

The Corinth School District is adding a second assistant principal at Corinth High School.

The board of trustees Thursday night approved the hiring of John Strickland, who will also serve as athletic director. A native of the Burnsville area, he is currently one of four assistant

principals at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where he also has responsibilities with the athletic programs.

Putting his knowledge of trivia to good use, Kossuth native Dan Marsh will gain the experience of a lifetime when he appears on the popular TV show “Jeopardy”.

After receiving a phone call on March 10, the 37-year-old admits he initially thought it was a telemarketer and chose not to answer it.

“I let it go to voicemail and finished the TV show I was watching – “Wolf Hall”. Then, when I checked the voicemail, I flipped out and called back immediately,” he said. “I got sent to voicemail. Then, finally,

“By improving food choices and increasing physical activity, you can lose 5 to 7 percent of your body weight,” she continued. “If you have prediabetes, these lifestyle changes can cut your risk of developing diabetes in half.”

Current statistics show that one out of three American adults have prediabetes and most don’t know it. Having prediabetes means a person’s blood glucose level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Higher than normal blood glucose levels raise

the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Without weight loss and moderate physical activity, many people with prediabetes will develop type two diabetes within three years. Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition which can lead to health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure; or loss of toes, feet or legs.

Individuals with prediabetes may be at risk for type 2 diabetes if they are: ■ Age 45 or older ■ Overweight ■ Have a family history of type 2 diabetes ■ Are physically active fewer than three times a week ■ Gave birth to a baby

weighing more than nine pounds Lifestyle changes made in the Diabetes Prevention Program will help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Participants who take advantage of the program will learn to: eat healthy, add physical activity to their life, manage stress and stay motivated.

The program will begin on Thursday, May 5 from 5 to 6 p.m. and will continue every Thursday for 16 weeks. Follow-up meetings will continue once a month for the next six months.

Designed for adults who have not been diagnosed with diabetes and geared toward prevention, the informational

program will include weigh-ins, food tracking, portion control, scales, food models and more.

“We really wanted get people’s attention and stress awareness for the disease because it is very manageable and in many cases, preventable with a healthy diet and exercise,” said Moore who will serve as the lifestyle coach.” Diabetes is climbing the charts as far as statistics and we need to do something about it.”

Across the Region Booneville Fire department’s rating increases BOONEVILLE — Efforts to improve the Tuscumbia-New Candler Volunteer Fire Department have resulted in achieving a class 7 rating.

Tuscumbia-New Candler VFD Fire Chief Greg Davis said the Mississippi State Rating Bureau notified the department the new class 7 rating was confirmed effective April 4.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Davis said, noting the class 7 rating is a first for the volunteer fire departments in Prentiss County. Booneville Fire Department in the city of Booneville has a class 6 rating.

Previously TuscumbiaNew Candler’s Fire Protection Grading District held a class 8 rating which was obtained in 2009.

The new seventh class rating is expected to help on house insurance for those living in the coverage area. Although he doesn’t have an exact figure it could mean savings close to $200 to $300 a year, he said. Individual property fire rates are also dependent upon specific construction, occupancy, private protection and exposure from adjacent buildings.

Iuka Tishomingo County plans Clean-Up Day IUKA — Tishomingo County Supervisors are set for their Great American Clean-Up Day on April 23.

Residents are encouraged to get out and clean up garbage from roadways in neighborhoods across the county. Garbage should be placed inside bags and placed beside the road, where supervisors will pickup and carry to dump.

Garage bags are also available for free to use in the Great American Clean-Up Day from a supervisor.

The Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department is also joining in with a few local inmates to pick up trash along state roads beginning on Monday.

Houston City’s tourism tax bill remains alive HOUSTON — The bill to allow the city of Houston to establish a tourism tax remains alive in the Mississippi Legislature, according to reports.

The bill would allow city residents to vote on the proposed two percent tax on hotel rooms and restaurants.

A referendum in the city last year narrowly failed to pass.

The new bill says the 25 percent of the funding would go to parks and recreation in the city.

The remaining money would be used for community and economic development.

Displays of Tishomingo county heritage, nature, art, animals, arrowheads and war memorabilia are just a few of the Nature Center’s focal points.

Once the Nature Center finishes construction, Friends of the Park will focus on updating the cabins.

On April 23, the group is hosting the first Swinging Bridge Trail Run with a four-mile option and a nine-mile option to raise even more funds for the park.

Tupelo SeaPort fined for exiting cities early

TISHOMINGO COUNTY — In honor of Earth Day on April 22, Tishomingo State Park will reopen its Nature Center,

TUPELO — SeaPort Airlines was fined $30,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation for violating requirements to provide advance notice before ending, suspending or reducing air service in several cities in recent months.

SeaPort ended service in Tupelo and in Muscle Shoals, Alabama on Oct. 23, even though it had given the agency on Aug. 27 a 90-day notice. On Sept.

30, DOT ordered SeaPort to continue service through Dec. 28 or until a new carrier could be found. But SeaPort notified the department on Oct. 19 it would end service four days later.

Starkville New development ahead in Starkville STARKVILLE — A new $14 million mixed-used development is planned to break ground in Starkville in the coming months.

Starkville-based Tabor Development, in partnership with Tuscaloosa, Ala.-based Progressive Properties, announced pre-construction sales of The 509.

The 509 will be comprised of 42 upscale condominium units, boutique retail space and a City Bagel Cafe.

Construction is set to begin on the condominiums this summer, with completion of the first phase scheduled for Fall 2017. The 509 will include two residential condominium buildings located less than a mile from Mississippi State University.

Oxford plans first gay pride weekend OXFORD — Organizers have planned multiple events for Oxford’s first ever gay pride weekend, according to reports.

The Lafayette Oxford University Pride Weekend will include a parade, a drag show, a dance performance and a dance party the weekend of May 5-7.

The weekend is being held in conjunction with the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies at Ole Miss.

Oxford Festival to present LGBTQ short films OXFORD — To be held in conjunction with Oxford’s first Pride Parade, Crossroads Film Society and Oxford Film Festival have partnered to provide a free screening of five curated short films.

Appointed superintendents a bright note for Mississippi Larry B. Mitchell will be the last elected superintendent of Alcorn County schools.

A bill recently signed into law by Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant eliminates the election of school superintendents after the current term.

The House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 2438 in a 80-36 vote with very little debate. The bipartisan bill passed the Senate in February, and because the House made no changes, it went straight to Gov. Bryant -who said he supported the measure before he ever signed the bill into law.

The bill will require all school districts in the state to appoint their superintendent starting in 2019. Any superintendent position filled in the last election (November 2015) will be allowed to finish their current four-year term. Mitchell is one of those.

This is a great new law and long overdue.

Although Rep. Nick Bain of Corinth and Rep. Tracy Arnold of Booneville voted against the measure, we were pleased Rep. Lester “Bubba” Carpenter of Burnsville and Rep. Jody Steverson of Ripley voted in favor of the legislation.

Thankfully, the measure didn’t need all of local representatives votes.

The Alcorn School District Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution last fall that asked the state to make the same change only in Alcorn County.

But the state went to bat and took care care of the issue all across the state.

Superintendents are currently elected in 55 of Mississippi’s 140 school districts, and the Magnolia state remains one of only three states in the nation to still allow superintendent elections.

“Appointed superintendents are an innovation Mississippi schools have needed for a long time,” Bryant said before he signed the bill. “There’s a reason most of the U.S. appoints superintendents -- because it works.

(This bill) is a game changer that will send a message to the rest of the nation that we are determined to make our educational system one of the best in America.”

He is on cue.

The Alcorn County School District Board of Education now has an even more important role in the future. Added to their current duties will be appointing a new school superintendent.

Thanks to this new law, our county school board will be able to take applications from all across the U.S. to find the best candidate for the job.

That’s why we needed this new law. We can branch out further than someone who is an Alcorn County resident to lead the Alcorn School District.

Appointed superintendents is a bright note for Mississippi.

And we approve this message.

How about the promise Republicans made about no more earmarks on spending bills? It disappeared almost as fast as a gold coin in a magician’s hands. Of course, they are not calling these new and improved earmarks earmarks. They call them something else, so they can claim they are keeping their promise. Is it any wonder this political season is characterized by voter anger?

Just in time for Tax Day comes the annual Pig Book 2016. For more than two decades Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonprofit organization that, according to its website, advocates for the “...the elimination of waste and inefficiency in government through lobbying and grassroots activities,” has published this useful guide, which illustrates just some of the ways our elected representatives waste the money we send them.

A few examples will set the tone, but you should read it all. It should embarrass every member of Con-

gress who voted for this unnecessary and wasteful stuff, but, unfortunately, they are beCal yond embarThomas rassment.

Here are Columnist a few of the categories.

Defense: “$255,000,000 for two additional F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft for the Navy. The acquisition misadventures of the JSF program have been well-documented. In development for nearly 15 years and four years behind schedule, the program is approximately $170 billion over budget and has encountered an abundance of persistent issues. An April 2015 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report noted that the lifetime operation and maintenance costs of the most expensive weapon system in history will total approximately $1 trillion.”

In February 2014, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Frank Kendall referred to the purchase of the F-35 as “acquisition malpractice.”

Agriculture: “$3,000,000 for the Delta Regional Authority (DRA), which also received a $3 million earmark in the Agriculture

Appropriations bill in FYs 2014 and 2015. However, in FY 2016, the DRA received an additional earmark costing $10,064,000 in the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, for a combined total of $13,064,000, an increase of 335.5 percent over the past earmarks.”

“According to the Republican Study Committee’s FY 2016 budget, funding for the DRA should be terminated because such regional commissions are duplicative of other federal programs and support mostly local projects. Support for cutting DRA funds is bipartisan, as President Obama’s FY 2017 version of Cuts, Consolidations, and Savings recommended reducing the agency’s budget by $3 million annually.”

We’ll wait to see if that happens, but based on past experience Congress doesn’t like to let go of money, even borrowed money.

Commerce, Justice Science: “Since FY 2002, members of Congress have directed 19 earmarks costing taxpayers $186 million for research facility construction at NIST in Alabama, Mississippi, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, and Puerto Rico.

These include two earmarks costing $60 million by Sen-

ate Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), and four earmarks totaling $19.5 million by Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.).”

“Sen. Cochran requested 709 earmarks costing taxpayers $1.9 billion between FYs 2008-2010, the three years in which members were required to identify their earmark requests. He requested both the highest number and dollar amount of earmarks in each of these years, making him the “King of Pork” for that period of time.”

Presidential candidates are again debating how high, or how low, the federal income tax should be. They have it backward. Voters should tell politicians how much of our money we will allow them to spend and on what. It’s our money, not theirs and politicians ought to live within our means.

But that would require asking less of government and more of ourselves.

Will Trump be swindled in Cleveland?

In the race for the Republican nomination, Donald Trump would seem to be in the catbird seat. He has won the most states, the most delegates and the most votes – by nearly two million.

He has brought out the largest crowds and is poised for huge wins in the largest states of the East, New York and Pennsylvania.

Yet, there is a growing probability that the backroom boys will steal the nomination from him at a brokered convention in Cleveland.

Over the weekend, Colorado awarded all 34 delegates to Ted Cruz. The fix had been in since August, when party officials, alarmed at Trump’s popularity, decided it would be best if Colorado Republicans were not allowed to vote on the party’s nominee.

After all, these poor folks might get it wrong.

In South Carolina, where Trump swept the primary, a plot is afoot for a mass desertion of Trump delegates after the first ballot.

The Republican Party in Georgia, another state Trump won, is also talking up delegate defections.

“This is a crooked system, folks,” says Trump, Pat “the system is Buchanan rigged. ... I go to Louisiana.

Columnist I win Louisiana. ... Then I find out I get less delegates than Cruz because of some nonsense. ... I say this to the RNC. I say it to the Republican Party: You’re going to have a big problem, folks, because the people don’t like what’s going on.”

Something rotten is also going on in the Democratic race.

Bernie Sanders is on a roll, having won seven straight primaries and caucuses. Yet, he keeps falling further behind.

“I watch Bernie, he wins.

He wins. He keeps winning, winning,” said Trump in Rochester. “And then I see, he’s got no chance. They always say he’s got no chance.

Why doesn’t he have a chance?

“Because the system is corrupt.”

Sanders seems to be shorted every time he wins a primary or caucus. And the insurmountable hurdle he faces was erected against

folks like Sanders some time ago – the 700-plus superdelegates.

These are Democratic congressmen, senators, governors and Party officials. By more than 10-1, close to 500 of these superdelegates have lined up to back Hillary Clinton and stop Sanders.

The Democratic Party believes in democracy, up to a point – that point being that Democratic voters will not be permitted to nominate a candidate to whom the party elites object.

While the turnout in the Democratic primaries and caucuses has not matched the Obama-Clinton race of 2008, Sanders has rallied the young and working class, turned out the biggest crowds and generated the greatest enthusiasm.

But on the Republican side, the Party has had the largest turnout in American history. And the reason is Trump.

And if, after having won the most votes and delegates, Trump is seen as having been swindled out of a nomination he won, by intraparty scheming in Cleveland, the GOP could suffer a self-inflicted wound from which it might not recover.

unity? The deepening split over trade and foreign policy, both between the parties, and within the parties.

Sanders, last week, was saying that what disqualifies Clinton as president is her support for free trade deals that gutted American industry and cost millions of jobs, and her support for an Iraq War that was among the costliest, bloodiest blunders in U.S. history.

On both issues, Trump agrees with Sanders. Cruz, an uber-hawk and free trader, is more aligned with Clinton.

If the “America First” stance on foreign and trade policy, close to a majority position today, is unrepresented by either party this fall, and we get a free trade, War Party president, the divisions within the country will widen and deepen.

If Sanders and his revolution are sent packing in Philadelphia, and Trump is robbed in Cleveland of a nomination Americans believe he won, political disillusionment, and political realignment, may be at hand.

ACTC Polymer Science team wins first place

Complete with a reception, cake and one impressive trophy, five students from the Alcorn Career and Technology Center’s Polymer Science class were recently rewarded for their efforts during the 7th Annual Polymer Science High School Competition.

Held in November of last year on the University of Southern Mississippi campus in Hattiesburg, Shyna Dilworth, Dylan Hammock, Colman Cook, Austin Isbell and Anthony Redding competed in various rounds against students from other schools, bringing home the coveted title of First Place Overall Winner.

“All of our Polymer Science students competed, but only five served on the Quiz Bowl team that went to Southern,” said Instructor Stephanie Parsons. “They are so excited to have won first place overall, first in essay, and first in Modulus and Tensile Strength Team Challenge.”

The star students were presented with a golden eagle trophy on Wednesday by Sara Bayley who serves as the testing services and quality leader for the Mississippi Polymer Science Institute which is an auxiliary of the University of Southern Mississippi. President Gary Chandler of The Alliance was also in attendance.

Echoing her sentiments, ACTC Director Rodney Hopper also expressed pride for his students.

“They went as one of the smallest districts in the state of Mississippi and competed against some of the biggest districts who have Polymer Science programs,” he said. “For them to have come out as the overall winner of the

competition is quite an accomplishment.”

“Mrs. Parsons has done a wonderful job with them,” he continued. “She is a wonderful instructor.”

In addition to receiving a trophy, the five also received full scholarships to Northeast Mississippi Community College.

“The competition was a great experience,” said CHS Junior Shyna Dilworth “We went in there blind with no idea what it was going to be like, but it turned out we actually did know what we were doing because we won.”

ACHS Junior Dylan Hammock was also impressed by the competition.

“It was nice to compete and fun to tour the labs and campus,” he said. “We really enjoyed the process,

but some of the questions were challenging.”

“It was a fun experience,” interjected KHS Senior Colman Cook.

ACHS Junior Anthony Redding admitted he was nervous about the competition, but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

“I was concerned about whether we could pull off a win or not,” he said.

“When we got there, I saw we had a chance.”

“Winning was pretty great,” he added.

Expressing his excitement for the journey, ACHS Junior Austin Isbell says he would do it all over again.

“It was a cool campus and was bigger than I thought it would be,” he said. “I would go back again.”

Dilworth served as the only parent chaperon for the trip.

“I’m very proud of them, but to find out today that my daughter received a full scholarship … I’m honestly at a loss for words,” said Shyna’s mom.

Bringing home the win, the students are already setting their sites on future challenges.

“The Alcorn Career and Technology Center is providing students with the academic, technical and employability skills needed to pursue post-secondary training, higher education, or to enter a career field prepared for ongoing learning,” said Alcorn School District Superintendent Larry B. Mr. Hill stepped into heaven on April 16, 2016 at his residence in Glen. He was born May 10, 1938 in Union County. He retired in 2005, at age 67, from Mississippi Polymers as Masters Planning Manager.

Born December 13, 1931, in Woodruff County, Ark. to Robert Lee and Nina Collier. Virginia Lee Lambert passed from this world at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo on April 14, 2016, following a long illness.

Virginia was a retired AT&T telephone operator who was an active member of the Communication Workers of America. As the wife of a U.S. Navy submariner, she lived in locations from Groton, Connecticut to Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a parishioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Corinth and was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harris Dalton Lambert; by her parents, and by her siblings Billy Wayne Collier, Robert Thomas Collier, and Iva Jean James.

Surviving Virginia are daughters Karen Lee (Tommy) of Clinton and Kimberley Gutschmidt (Burkhard) of Magdeburg, Germany; sons William Lambert of New Orleans, La. and Joseph Lambert of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters Belinda Chaney and Marie Baldwin of Cabot, Ark., Barbara Cursey of Hernando, and Sarah Mann of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

teachers who are on maternity leave,” said Childress. “In addition to that, since the start of the semester, we have lost two pre-K teachers, and we have struggled to find people with a pre-K endorsement. We are having to use a mix of people in order to cover those classes because just not everyone is comfortable going into a pre-K classroom.”

The supply teachers are Denise King, Lana Moss, Nicholas McAlister, Kaiirya Davis, Casey Dunn and Brandi Greene. Lee Ann Nuckolls will be a part-time

Marsh’s road to “Jeopardy” began after he completed an online test for a chance to be a contestant.

“I’ve been taking the test pretty much annually since they started giving it in 2006. The contestant coordinators told us that 100,000 people take the online test. Of those, about 10,000 pass it. Only 3,000 of those 10,000 are invited to live auditions,” he said. “My live audition was last June 14 in Atlanta, Ga. (on my son’s 13th birthday). Of the 1,000 or so that pass the live audition, 400 actually get invited to be on the show.

Marsh will fly to Culver City, Calif. on Monday, April 25. The episode will be taped April 26–28, but won’t air until mid-summer.

“I was on my way to the movies when I got the call officially informing me I would be on the show,” said the excited contestant. “It was pretty hard to concentrate on ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ after that.”

“I have been a fan of the show as long as I can remember,” he added.

“Since DVR became a thing, I pretty much don’t miss an episode.”

Aside from watching the show regularly, the Jeopardy fan is reviewing

episodes on the J!Archive website.

“I came up with about 40 categories I felt like I needed to study (e.g. philosophers, opera, African geography, etc.) and filled a bunch of 3x5 note cards to study,” he said. “I recorded myself reading them and listen to them while I sleep.”

A 1997 graduate of Kossuth High School and a 2000 graduate of Northeast Mississippi Community College, Marsh is the son of Deborah Glidewell (Wayne), the brother of Amanda Marsh (Javeed) and Joe Marsh (Jodie).

He has two children, Max Marsh, 13, and Ava Marsh, 11, a nephew, Noah, 6, and two nieces, Allie, 10, and Elisheva, 9.

Marsh earned a BBA degree from Faulkner University in 2005 and has worked at Caterpillar since 2004. He currently serves as supply chain analyst.

His hobbies include reading, watching movies, playing board games, and performing at CorinthTheatre-Arts.

Dan’s advice for future contestants: “Of all the accounts and advice I have read, the general consensus is to treat it like a game and have fun with it,” he said. “The most successful contestants are those who don’t give in to the pressure. That’s my goal.

1 firefighter dead, 1 hurt in shooting TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — Police worked Saturday to determine why a person opened fire on firefighters who were responding to a call for help at a home in a Maryland suburb of Washington.

John Ulmschneider, a 13-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Fire Department, died Friday night after he was shot while trying to enter a home to make a welfare check, police said.

Volunteer firefighter Kevin Swain, 19, also was shot, and was in serious but stable condition after coming out of surgery Saturday, department officials said. Swain, who authorities say was shot four times, is expected to survive.

Firefighters had gone to the Temple Hills home after the brother of the man who lived there told authorities he was concerned about the man’s safety, said Mark Brady, spokesman for the fire department.

The man said his brother had trouble controlling his blood sugar and recently blacked out. He told authorities he was worried because his brother wasn’t answering the phone or the door and his car was parked in the driveway, Brady said.

When the firefighters arrived on the scene, the person inside was unresponsive, so they decided to force entry, police said. As that was happening, the person inside fired several rounds, striking two firefighters and his brother, authorities said. Police said that once officers got into the home, the gunfire stopped. Â

Pair faces jail over lost library books TECUMSEH, Mich. — A judge told a Michigan couple they could land in jail for up to 93 days and face a maximum $500 fine for failing to return a novel and a Dr. Seuss book borrowed from the local public library.

Cathy and Melvin Duren of Tecumseh, Michigan, appeared in Lenawee County court on Thursday to each

face a misdemeanor charge of failure to return rental property.

They owe about $35 in late fees for “The Rome Prophecy,� borrowed in April 2015. They lost a Dr. Seuss book their teenage son borrowed for their granddaughter in July 2014. “I can’t image going to jail over it, but I certainly will fight these charges because I’m not guilty,� Cathy Duren said.

Although the couple admitted they were negligent in returning the books, they think it’s unfair to each be charged a $105 “diversion fee� to the Lenawee County Economic Crimes Unit in addition to fines owed to the Tecumseh Public Library, WXYZ-TV reported.

In December, the Durens received a letter advising them to return the books and pay the fees, as well as the replacement costs if they couldn’t find the books. The letter also informed them that they could be charged with a crime.

In January, the couple was able to find and return “The Rome Prophecy,â€? but they couldn’t locate the Dr. Seuss book. The title of the book wasn’t known. Â

Gov. Snyder urges tougher lead rules LANSING, Mich. — Michigan would have the toughest leadtesting rules in the nation and require the replacement of all underground lead service pipes in the state under a sweeping plan that Gov. Rick Snyder and a team of water experts unveiled Friday in the wake of Flint’s water crisis.

Other proposals include requiring utilities to test all schools, day care centers, nursing homes and similar facilities — not just some people’s houses — and the mandatory disclosure of lead plumbing in home sales and rental contracts.

The plan was given to The Associated Press before it was presented to a committee that Snyder appointed to work on long-term fixes related to Flint’s leadtainted water crisis. It is unclear how much the proposal will cost, and

the policy workgroup purposely did not take funding into account.

The Republican governor said at Friday’s meeting in Flint that he wants a “marker in the ground,� and he expects the plan to generate legislative debate and a better accounting of cost considerations.

The federal lead standard is “dumb and dangerous,� Snyder said.

The governor, who has apologized for his administration’s failures in the Flint disaster, noted that the EPA will not propose revisions until 2017, saying: “Let’s set a higher standard faster.�

The impoverished city of nearly 100,000 residents is under a monthslong state of emergency. Â

Immigration dispute divides high court WASHINGTON — The raging political fight over immigration comes to the Supreme Court on Monday in a dispute that could affect millions of people who are in the United States illegally.

The court is weighing the fate of Obama administration programs that could shield roughly 4 million people from deportation and grant them the legal right to hold a job.

Among them is Teresa Garcia of suburban Seattle, who has spent 14 years in the United States illegally after staying beyond the expiration of her tourist visa in 2002.

She already has gotten much of what she wanted when she chose not to return to her native Mexico. Her two sons are benefiting from an earlier effort that applies to people who were brought here illegally as children.

Garcia’s 11-year-old daughter is an American citizen. “That’s why I come, for the opportunity for the children and because it is much safer here,� the 45-year-old Garcia said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Now, she would like the same for herself and her husband, a trained accountant who works construction jobs. Neither can work legally.

Students protest flying of state flag STARKVILLE — A group of students at Mississippi State University have issued a list of demands to President Mark Keenum and his administration as part of a protest sparked by the university’s continued flying of the state flag.

About 100 students held a sit-in Wednesday at Lee Hall, which houses Keenum’s office.

Organizers told The Commercial Dispatch they wanted to show support for lowering and changing the state flag, which now bears a Confederate symbol. They also issued a list of demands related to minority issues they say administrators are ignoring.

In addition to the flag issue, the group wants the administration to: equalize funding and support for black student organizations; increase minority faculty hires; address retention and graduation rates for AfricanAmerican students and facilitate more diversity and sensitivity training; create on-campus safe spaces for black students; promote inclusive environments for all minority groups; have equal and fair treatment for African-American events, concerts and programs; end discrimination in the university’s housing program; and deliver more physical and mental health programs for black students. Â

Jackson: No lead in city’s water system JACKSON — The city of Jackson has confirmed that water samples taken from the city’s distribution system tested below the detection limit for lead.

Questions about the presence of lead within the city’s system arose after the city discovered an unacceptable amount of lead in drinking water over two months ago.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that the city announced on Friday that recent test results confirmed the city’s belief that “the lead exceedance is due to home plumbing and/or the presence of lead service lines.�

The city tested 15 drinking water samples from elevated storage

tanks within the distribution system.

The detection limit for lead is one-half part per billion. Â

Tax rebate granted for mall expansion RIDGELAND — A project to expand a shopping mall in Ridgeland has been granted a four-year extension of a sales tax rebate by the Mississippi Development Authority.

Without the extension the $96.8 million expansion of the Renaissance at Colony Park would have lost nearly $30 million in rebates, challenging its feasibility, according to the Mississippi Business Journal.

The Legislature voted to end the rebate program in 2014, but Renaissance at Colony Park LLC. got its application approved before the deadline.

Still, the rebate has been controversial.

Efforts to block the extensions have failed so far in the current session of the Legislature.

Nine homeowners meanwhile have sued the city to block the development. Homeowners contend the expansion with Costco would create traffic problems and devalue residential property. Â

Taylor to give speech at Alcorn graduation ALCORN — Lawyer, author and public speaker Johnny C. Taylor Jr. will deliver the keynote speech at the 2016 commencement ceremonies at Alcorn State University.

The university said Friday that Taylor will address 594 graduates on Saturday, May 7, at 8:30 a.m. and at 1 p.m. in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.

Taylor is president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, a national organization that represents the country’s 47 publicly-supported historically black colleges and universities. He also serves on the board of Gallup, a research based, global performance management consulting company, and the board of The Cooper Union, a privately funded college dedicated to preparing students for careers in art, architecture and engineering located in New York City.

Taylor says he looks forward to celebrating with the Alcorn family. Â

Natchez mayor ends bid for another term NATCHEZ, Miss. — Citing health reasons, the mayor of Natchez has decided to withdraw his bid for re-election.

On Friday, the Natchez Democrat reported that Mayor Butch Brown is withdrawing his bid for re-election in June.

He told the newspaper he’s not seeking re-election due to health reasons following multiple strokes in late 2015.

He also said he wants to spend time with his family, including a new grandson.

Brown had said he didn’t want to run for reelection but that he would keep his name on the ballot and if the election turned out in his favor he would be compelled to accept another term.

Now Brown says he has asked the Adams County Election Commission about the process for officially withdrawing his candidacy and removing his name from the ballot. Â

Tallahatchie County may get disaster aid PEARL — Residents and businesses of Tallahatchie County are now eligible to apply for federal assistance from the March flooding and severe storms.

Gov. Phil Bryant announced Friday that the addition of Tallahatchie brings to 17 counties of the state that can receive assistance to recover from the historic rainfall and flooding that occurred.

Bolivar, Clarke, Coahoma, Forrest, George, Greene, Jones, Marion, Panola, Pearl River, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tunica, Washington and Wayne counties were declared eligible for FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program earlier.

The program helps with things like temporary housing assistances, uninsured or underinsured personal property losses and medical, dental and funeral expenses caused by the disaster.

Residents and businesses affected by the disaster should online via www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

CHICAGO — All that talk of an angry America?

An Associated PressGfK poll finds that most Americans are happy with their friends and family, feel good about their finances and are more or less content at work. It’s government, particularly the federal government, that’s making them see red.

Almost 8 in 10 Americans say they’re dissatisfied or angry with the way the federal government is working, while about the same proportion say they’re satisfied or enthusiastic about their personal lives. Republicans are far more likely to be angry — half of GOP voters, compared with about one-quarter of Democrats or independents — and those Republicans are much more supportive of Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the party’s presidential nomination.

Still, anger isn’t so much driven by political ideology as it is by an overall disdain for a political system that doesn’t

seem to be working, voters said in follow-up interviews. They’re upset with both parties, as well as career politicians and Washington insiders who, those surveyed said, don’t put their constituents’ interests first.

“There are too many lobbyists and people who are not really working for the people anymore.

They’re working to line their own pockets,” said 37-year-old Greg Boire of Belding, Michigan, who works as a bank customer service representative and voted for Trump in that state’s Republican primary. “It happens on both sides. ... It’s just the whole government in general.”

John Santoro of San Jose, California, a 58-year-old market development manager for a company that makes semiconductor-related products, said he’s doing well financially but is angry about a lack of progress to lower the country’s debt.

He mostly blames President Barack Obama, but “politicians on both sides of the aisle are to blame because they just can’t get

anything done. They just fundraise and get contributions from special interests.”

The AP-GfK poll showed that angry Republicans such as Boire and Santoro were much more likely than those who are just dissatisfied to have a favorable view of Trump, by 62 percent to 42 percent. Fifty-eight percent of dissatisfied Republicans, but just 36 percent of angry ones, have an unfavorable opinion of Trump.

Both men say they do support Trump — to a point. They believe he could shake up Washington, but worry about his rhetoric and lack of campaign organization.

Boire said he’s impressed that Trump is spending his own money and that what he says “is his opinion and not that of the lobbyists.” But Boire would be satisfied if the more politically experienced Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won the nomination because Trump “does not have the filter to shut off” negative comments.

Santoro said he might vote for Cruz in the California primary if Trump doesn’t “cinch things up” and run a more professional campaign.

Even so, Trump has harnessed anger toward the federal government to win many die-hard supporters, like 58-year-old Debra Waterson of Petoskey, Michigan.

She’s upset that the gun lobby has a strong influence in Washington and that the Senate won’t vote on Obama’s nominee for Supreme Court. But she’s even angrier about the economy and foreign trade deals, so she voted for Trump in the Republican primary.

“Up here in northern Michigan, there is so much unemployment and so many can’t afford to eat or buy medicine,” said Waterson, who said her

family is getting by.

In the Democratic race against Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also has drawn support of voters who say they’re fed up with the federal government.

Retired Miami postal worker Kenneth Olinsky, a Sanders supporter, said he’s angry at Republicans in Congress for being “obstructionist” on legislation that could help working-class or low-income families.

“They haven’t done anything for the people as much as they’ve done for the wealthy and for businesses,” said Olinsky, 61.

“There is a definite class system in this country; it’s the haves against the have nots.”

In the poll, people were slightly more likely to describe the economy as good than they were in February, 45 percent to 41 percent. Despite the current uptick, 54 percent describe the economy as poor.

Still, two-thirds or more of Democrats and Republicans say they’re at least satisfied with their personal and family relationships, financial situations, careers, and work-life balance. Independents lag behind on each of those measures, but are still more likely than not to be satisfied with each.

But the vast majority of Americans — 71 percent — still think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Nearly half of Democrats, but less than 1 in 10 Republicans, think the country is headed in the right direction.

Christopher Ashby, 32, a stay-at-home dad in Albemarle, North Carolina, who describes himself as a very conservative Republican and firm Trump supporter, said he is angry about government handouts for people and corporations and the influence of lobbyists and special-interest groups.

Throughout our long marriage, I trusted my second husband to do what he promised me and my relatives.

He arranged very good financial care for me in the event of his death, and assured me that I would want for nothing.

Unbeknownst to me until it was too late, my husband had left power of attorney to his money-hungry children, who proceeded to take advantage of his dementia and very old age.

Tragically, they convinced my husband to divorce me. This brought me much heartbreak, shock and lack of trust after a happy, long marriage.

Because I am a strong person, I have learned to cope and take care of myself. It wasn’t easy, and the process has been slow, but I’m succeeding. Along the way I have learned some

painful but valuable lessons.

I would like my experience to help other women, especially older, traditional women like me who have spent most of their lives taking care of their husbands and are dependent on them to take responsible, proper and loving financial care of us.

If your husband had shown you the documents he had drawn up regarding his estate planning, and he and his lawyer had explained them all to you, this wouldn’t have happened.

To me, the lesson here is “trust, but VERIFY,” and I hope others will learn from your experience before it’s too late for them.

DEAR ABBY: I have encountered an “over-hugger.” I hug often, but respect how others feel about it.

This person does not extend that courtesy.

His typical hug involves picking the recipient up off the ground, which I think is his way of showing off.

The last time I saw him I offered my hand. Instead, he yanked me in and said, “We

give hugs here!” It felt invasive.

I know he is trying to show love, but he puts his own desire before the needs of others.

I want to tell him not to hug me anymore.

However, it’s complicated because we are part of a looseknit athletic community, and people hug left and right at our events. I hug a lot of people, but I’m polite about it. Not only would I likely have to declare “no hugs” to him in front of others, but it would become obvious that we don’t hug.

Leaders fall from top spot

The road was unkind to Kossuth and Corinth on Friday in the next-to-last division baseball date of the season.

League leaders in Division 1-3A and 1-4A, respectively, the Aggies and Warriors dropped from the top spot with losses on Friday.

Corinth dropped a 3-2 decision at Itawamba AHS, while Mooreville thumped Kossuth 10-2 thanks to a huge first inning.

The Warriors dropped to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in Division 1-4A play.

Corinth closes out the season Monday at Tishomingo County.

Mooreville 10, Kossuth 2 Mooreville quickly erased a 1-0 deficit with an 8-run first to take over the top spot in Division 1-3A heading into Monday.

Kossuth, which won Tuesday’s contest 2-0 at home, dropped to 20-5 and 8-1 in league play.

The Aggies hosted Southaven ton Saturday and will wrap up regularseason play Monday against Alcorn Central.

Mooreville improved to 21-4 and like Kossuth stands at 8-1 in division play with a trip to Booneville on Monday still looming on the league slate.

Mooreville sent 12 batters to the plate in the home half, scoring eight times on five hits, two hit batsmen, a walk, sac fly and error.

Beau Lee and Jacob Wilcher had two hits each. Wilcher had a pair of doubles, while Lee had a three-base hit.

Alcorn Central 12, Belmont 1 The Golden Bears salvaged a series split, by run-ruling the visiting Cardinals in five innings.

Belmont (3-14, 2-7 Division 1-3A) had taken a 2-1 win in Tuesday’s contest.

Central improved to 13-9 overall and clinched the No. 3 seed with a 5-4 mark in league play. The Bears, who traveled to Tishomingo County on Saturday, are one-game up on and hold the tiebreaker with Booneville with one division game remaining.

Through the first day of play at the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) 2016 State Golf Tournament, Mississippi Gulf Coast leads the eight teams and an approximately 40 golfers with a twoover 290 at Shiloh Ridge Golf Course in Corinth.

Gulf Coast leads the twoday event, while Copiah-Lincoln and Meridian are nipping on the Bulldogs’ heels.

Copiah-Lincoln finished the first day with a six-over, 294 while Meridian fired an even 300 on the opening day.

Other team scores included Northwest Mississippi

at 302, East Mississippi at 307 with East Central and Itawamba tied at 310. Hinds rounded out the team scores with a 324.On the individual side, Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Grant Motter fired a fourunder 68 to lead the approximately 40 golfers while three other linksters carded scores in the red on the opening day of the tournament.

Copiah-Lincoln’s Joseph Dendy is two shots off the lead at 70 while a pair of golfers registered 1-under rounds.

Special needs students enjoy bowling league

Wednesday was bowling day for around 50 special needs students of the Tishomingo County School District.

Each of them had a smile on their face as they lined up to get their shoes at Plaza Lanes and take part in the Special Education and Handicap Bowling League.

“They all look forward to it,” said Sabrina Spoon, a special education assistant at Tishomingo County High School.

“They know when it’s time to go bowling.”

The Tishomingo County School District is in its third year of taking advantage of the United Way program. Students from the district schools of Belmont, Burnsville, Iuka and TCHS take part in the program the first Wednesday of each month.

Prentiss County schools such as Jumpertown, Marietta and Thrasher also bowl monthly as part of the program at Plaza Lanes.

“The program is open to anyone,” said Plaza Lanes owner David Curry.

Curry only charges a nomi-

nal fee, which is covered by United Way, and he makes sure each child gets a chance to bowl.

“Everyone keeps bowling until they bowl at least one game,” he said.

The Special Education and Handicap Bowling League started at Rebel Lanes in Tupelo in the 1980s, according to league president Shelli Wood.

“We have 300 students in the program with the only stipulation being they must have a special education ruling,” said Wood. “The league is no cost to the student or the school.”

In what runners in the Crossroads area call a “great warm - up for the Corinth Coca-Cola Classic 10K,” the Savannah Rotary Club played host to the Run in the Park on Saturday at Shiloh National Military Park. Just over 100 walkers and runners took part in the four-mile race which made a loop through the park. Corinth’s Donald Didonato (#69) took first place with a time of 26:43.

“The league is a moral boost for them,” said Wood.

“Socialization is a big thing for special needs kids and getting out to bowl helps them,” added Spoon, who found out about the league through another school district. “Once we started coming, they have loved it since most of them had never bowled.”

Bowling once a month also allows students to be involved in a team setting.

Playing short handed didn’t stop the Alcorn Central boy’s track team from ending the regular season on a high note.

Some miscommunication kept Alcorn Central from maxing out in all the events last Saturday at the annual Daily Journal Relays. Still, the Bears won the Class II — 1A, 2A, 3A — title while the girls’ squad finished third out of six schools.

“Our boys team did well to win, especially when we could only enter two per event,” said AC Head Coach Bobby Purvis. “We had not received the information that three participants could compete in each individual event.”

The Bears racked up 157.5 points, outdistancing runner-up East Union by nearly 33 points. Adamsville, Tennessee, Myrtle, Booneville and Aberdeen finished third through sixth, respectively.

Central won eight events and had four runner-up finishes.

The Central boys finished the regular season at 21-5.

The Lady Bears totaled 82 points, finishing behind East Union (169) and Myrtle (137.5). Adamsville, Tennessee was fourth, Booneville fifth and Aberdeen finished sixth.

“The girls scored well considering we only entered 12 of the 18 events,” said Purvis.

“We needed to rest in places and be healthy for the Division 1-3A Meet.”

Central did win one-third of the events it entered, with the Lady Bears taking home four titles.

The Lady Bears ended the regular season with a 16-10 mark.

“Most of the students are unable to participate in organized sports,” said Wood. “This not only lets them be part of a team, but also helps them with their motor skills.”

Each season ends with an awards program where students are presented a medal. The league also takes bowling scores and passes them onto to be used in the Special Olympics.

Jeanie Sanderson founded the program with an emphasis on participa-

tion and not winning.

“They look forward to getting out of their routine and interacting once a month,” said Spoon.

The trip to the bowling alley is also beneficial on the academic side as teachers use the manual scoring as a math lesson.

“Teachers are awesome with it,” said Wood. “Everyone wins in this program.”

Arcia broke a 4-all tie with his first home run of the season. It came off reliever Joe Smith (0-1) and was Minnesota’s first hit since the fifth inning.

One batter later, Park — who had the decisive hit Friday night — added his own solo shot to give the Twins some insurance.

Trevor Plouffe had three hits and also homered for Minnesota.

Ryan Pressly (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the win in relief of starter Ricky Nolasco. Kevin Jepsen threw a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 2 BOSTON — David Price rebounded from a rough start in Boston’s home opener with seven solid innings, Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run home run and the Red Sox beat Toronto.

It was Boston’s third straight win. The Red Sox have defeated the defending AL East champs four times in five meetings.

Price (2-0) gave up two runs and six hits, struck out nine and didn’t allow a walk. He finished by striking out the side.

Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.

Signed to a $217 million, seven-year deal during free agency, the left-hander had his best start for Boston. In his Fenway Park debut with the Red Sox on Monday, he gave up five runs in five innings after allowing two in six at Cleveland on opening day.

— Josh Reddick and Stephen Vogt homered to back Sonny Gray’s solid effort, and Oakland ended a four-game losing streak with a victory over Kansas City.

Busch riding momentum of consecutive weekend sweeps

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Kyle Busch won’t get his third consecutive NASCAR weekend sweep, but he’s savoring his current success.

How long it continues depends on how the defending Sprint Cup Series champion beats back an impressive list of challengers at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch will start fifth Sunday in the 500-lap Cup race on the half-mile track, where he and brother Kurt have the most wins among active drivers

with five each. He’s among four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers starting in the top five, with pole winner Carl Edwards alongside Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin fourth.

It’s not like starting position matters to Busch, who leads the Cup standings by six points over Jimmie Johnson.

“It doesn’t matter; long race, we’ll be fine,” Busch said after qualifying Friday.

Busch swept Martinsville and Texas to become the first driver to accomplish the feat since Harry Gant went back-to-back at

Richmond and Dover in 1991. His four wins have come across NASCAR’s three national series.

He fell just short of getting the Xfinity Series victory needed in his quest for a three in a row, finishing second to Erik Jones on Saturday after starting fifth. A third straight Cup win remains possible for Busch, who achieved the feat last summer.

In 32 Cup races since he returned last May from injury, Busch has seven wins, 18 top-5s and 22 top-10s with 1,255 laps led.

That total includes

six top-5s this season, a strong carry over from last year’s title run. The successful stretch has Busch grateful and reflective, especially since he missed last season’s first 11 races recovering from leg and foot injuries sustained in an Xfinity Series wreck at Daytona.

“Missing what I missed last year and being out of the race car as long as I was, I think I’ve certainly given fact to the matter that I love racing,” said Busch, who turns 31 on May 2.

Curry leads Warriors past Rockets in playoff opener Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. — Stephen Curry dazzled from long range and drove to the hoop from every angle with flair and fire.

It took a tweaked ankle to slow him down and get him out of the game.

Curry scored 24 points before leaving with an ankle injury as the Golden State Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 104-78 on Saturday in their playoff opener.

Draymond Green added 12 points and 10 rebounds as top-seeded Golden State carried momentum from setting the all-time wins record Wednesday night with No. 73 into a testy playoff opener some 60 hours later.

Game 2 in the best-ofseven series is Monday night at Oracle Arena.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Curry is questionable for that one.

Pacers 100, Raptors 90 TORONTO — The Indiana Pacers beat the Toronto Raptors in Game 1 of their first round playoff series.

Jonas Valanciunas fouled out after scoring 12 points and setting a Raptors’ playoff record with 19 rebounds. All-Star guards Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan both struggled for the second-seeded

Hawks 102, Celtics 101 ATLANTA — Jeff Teague stymied another big Boston comeback, taking matters into his own hands in the closing minutes to lead the Atlanta Hawks to victory over the Celtics in Game 1 of the openinground playoff series.

Teague scored 23 points and doled out 12 assists, making sure Atlanta maintained the homecourt edge after the gritty Celtics rallied from a 19-point deficit.

With the game tied at 88, Teague worked the pick-and-roll to set up a layup for Al Horford. The Celtics missed and the Hawks again got the ball to Teague, who found Paul Millsap alone under the basket for a dunk that pushed Atlanta to a 92-88 lead with 2:56 remaining.

Game 2 in the best-ofseven series is Tuesday night in Atlanta.

“There were never very many thoughts that crossed my mind that I did not want to come back. This is what it’s all about for me. ... You want to win them all, but you know you’re going to lose a heck of a lot more than you win. We just have to stay consistent through what we’re doing right now.”

His mission on Sunday is holding off charges from JGR teammates, all of whom have Bristol Cup wins.

Edwards (three) earned his second straight pole on Friday and ran seventh last week at Texas. Kenseth is the defending race winner and has earned two of his four Bristol victories in the past five Bristol events at the track.

Hamlin won here in August 2012 and has nine top-10s in 20 starts.

In spite of those impressive credentials, Edwards said Busch’s run

creates a hurdle.

“The good part about Kyle’s success now is that I’m on his team so I can see what he’s doing,” he said, joking. “I can talk to him about it, but I don’t know that there’s a specific thing you do. I just think sometimes its working and things go your way and you have to be fast, too.”

For his part Busch said he’s doing nothing different from any other part of his career. His No. 18 Toyota Camry has indeed been fast, and he suggested that circumstances might be falling his way a little more than usual.

Whatever the reason, Busch won’t question why things are clicking.

His objective is riding the momentum as long as possible.

“I feel like we can go each and every week and have a legitimate chance to win,” he said, “which is probably the first time in my career that I’ve had that. So, it’s pretty good.”

The former Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles slugger threw a ceremonial first pitch to Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts, who this year became the first minority manager in franchise history.

In Philadelphia, Robinson’s skill for basestealing is depicted in a mural on the city’s north end painted nearly a decade ago in his honor. Walking near the mural on Friday afternoon with her 10-year-old daughter Nate, Tikeena Harris explained that blacks and whites didn’t used to play sports together.

Tommy Keels, who lived nearby and passes the mural regularly, said Robinson was a groundbreaker who represented his race well.

“I lived through Jim Crow,”

said Keels, 60, who is from Miami. “I was raised in the South.

I experienced a lot of things I know he did on a monumental scale.”

Jackie Robinson’s teammate and roommate Don Newcombe says his friend deserves all the accolades.

“The world owes him whatever they can say about him and do about him that is good, because he was a great man,” the former Brooklyn pitcher told the AP on Friday while the Dodgers were taking batting practice.

“I was with him, I roomed with him, he was my good friend, my good buddy, and I loved him. I still love him today like he was still here,” said Newcombe, who was the first black pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1949. “I remember Jackie sitting me and Roy Campanella down one day in Roy’s apartment and he told us: ‘I can’t do it without you. I need you. And one day, we’re going to change the letter I in bitter to an E for better.’ And he became so right. God bless him.”

Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully, who was there for Robinson’s career in Brooklyn, said Robinson’s “self-control under some

pressurized circumstances was remarkable.”

“We all knew that that fire of competitiveness was always on high, and he was not always welcomed. But he overcame all of that,” Scully said. “That, to me was the most remarkable thing — how controlled he was with all the hell that was running around him. He took a lot of abuse, but kept his jaw tight. He had to be an unusual man, and he was.”

Orlando Hudson, a 12-year veteran who played second base for the Dodgers in 2009, still has a couple of framed No. 42 jerseys hanging in his home, along with a photo of himself and Rachel Robinson — among his most treasured souvenirs from his playing career.

“Being an African-American male, playing the same position with the Dodgers that he did and wearing number 42 on this day, you can’t get better than that,” said Hudson, who now works for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has done some speaking engagements with Robinson’s widow over the years.

Robinson died at 53 in 1972, a decade after he became the first black player inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The story of Confederate General Louis Hebert H a v e you ever heard of General Hebert?

H e isn’t exTom actly well Parson k n o w n and he Park Ranger n e v e r achieved the fame of many of his contemporaries. He was just one of 26 general officers involved in the Corinth campaign, yet the part he played here leaves us wondering “what might have been?”

Louis Hebert was born in 1820 in Bayou Goula, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, a Creole from south Acadiana. He came from a wealthy family of sugar farmers and entered the U.S. Military Academy when he was 21, a bit older than most of the cadets in the class of 1845. He wasn’t the first of his family to attend West Point; his cousin/foster brother Paul graduated at the top of his class in 1840.

School work came easy for Louis and he particularly excelled in math.

Gen. Grant (Class of 1843) knew Louis when they were cadets and later wrote, “In mathematics I was rather apt after I got fairly imbued with the subject. But we had a man there during my term of four years who was really a mathematical phenomenon. He was from Louisiana, and his name was Louis Hebert.

No problem in differential or integral calculus or conic sections ever gave him a moment’s bother or required any study.”

Hebert graduated third out of 41 in the Class of 1845, “very greatly to his father’s disgust,” who expected him to do as well as his older brother Paul.

Louis was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the prestigious Corps of Engineers.

Less than two years later he resigned to return to Louisiana and assist his ailing father with the running of the plantation.

Within a year his father died and the farm was his. He did very well for himself and married the fair Malvina Lambremont and they had three sons.

The 1850s were good years for Louis; he was elected to a term in the state legislature, was appointed the State Engineer of Louisiana, and rose to the rank of colonel in the militia. Foster brother Paul did well also and was elected to the governor’s mansion.

Whether or not Louis got the top engineering job in the state because his brother was the governor, well, I’ll let you decide.

As good as the ’50s were for Louis, 1860 was a low

Gen. Louis Hebert point. His wife passed away and the increasing calls for secession were not looked upon favorably in his home. He voted for Stephen Douglass in the November election and was firmly against Louisiana leaving the Union.

“We had better have one strong nation than two weak ones,” he stated.

On January 26, 1861, Louisiana seceded from the United States and with a heavy heart Louis offered his services to the new Confederate States Army. In May he was appointed as colonel of “Hebert’s Regiment,” later designated the 3rd Louisiana Infantry.

His first action came at the head of his regiment in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. He did very well, his men captured five cannon, and he was praised in official reports.

Things did not go nearly so well on his second outing at Elk Horn Tavern (Pea Ridge).

This was Hebert’s first fight under the leadership of General Van Dorn and, to be honest, Van Dorn’s plan of battle was bad. It was flawed in design and flawed in execution. Hebert had been promoted to the command of a brigade and was with the right flank of the army for a very complicated double envelopment. Hebert reported directly to his division commander, Brig.

Gen. Ben McCulloch, who led nearly half of Van Dorn’s army.

At the height of the fighting General McCulloch was killed, quickly followed by his secondin-command, Gen. James McIntosh. Hebert was in the middle of a savage assault with his brigade and was unaware he had inherited command of the division.

The truth was, Hebert was the only Confederate commander on the right

who was whipping the enemy; but, unbeknownst to him, without his guidance the division was leaderless and paralyzed.

With no support or reinforcements his brigade was eventually cut off and Louis was captured.

Within two weeks, however, he was exchanged and was back with the army.

In April of ’62 Van Dorn’s Army of the West crossed over the Mississippi River and joined Beauregard’s army here in Corinth. Louis Hebert did not stay too long. He became very ill and was sent by rail to a hospital in Canton. He was still away on a medical furlough when he was promoted to brigadier general.

He returned to the command of his brigade in June though he was still far from well. The army was reorganized and Gen. Sterling Price was at the head of the small army with Hebert’s brigade placed in the division of Brig. Gen. Henry Little.

In September the force set out from Tupelo on a mission to block Federal troops from crossing the Tennessee River. As it turns out there were no Union troops headed north as believed and Gen. Price stopped in Iuka to think about what to do next. Before he could make a move he was attacked on the 19th

by Gen. William S. Rosecrans’ force approaching from the southwest.

Luckily for Price, the closest troops to confront Rosecrans were Hebert’s men. Louis attacked with a ferocity that stunned the enemy; I tell you the guy fought like a wild man.

Three charges were made across a steep ravine and Hebert’s men pushed back twice their numbers and captured the six guns of the 11th Ohio Battery. It was hand to hand

Parvin honored at Arkansas State Ashley Parvin of Corinth was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Parvin was initiated at Arkansas State University.

Parvin is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of

the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and most selective alldiscipline honor society.

The Society has chapters on more than 300 college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines. Its mission is “To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”

Since its founding, more than 1.25 million

members have been initiated. Some of the organization’s more notable members include former President Jimmy Carter, NASA astronaut Wendy Lawrence, novelist David Baldacci and YouTube cofounder Chad Hurley.

The Society has awarded approximately $15 million since the inception of its awards program in 1932.

Today, more than $1 million is awarded each biennium to qualifying students and members through graduate fellowships, undergraduate study abroad grants, member and chapter awards, and grants for local and national literacy initiatives. For more information, visit www.phikappaphi.org.

fighting and a Union participant recalled how, “Sword and bayonet were crossed. Muskets, revolvers, knives, ramrods, gunswabs – all mingled in the death-dealing fray.”

All of this action took place along Hwy 25 in Iuka right at the old Sunset Lodge.

More troops were fed into the fight and as Gen. Henry Little was directing another brigade forward, he was struck and died instantly. Once again Louis was thrust into the command of a division and he was doing very well in this position when the falling sun brought an end to the fighting. In the early morning hours Price’s outnumbered army quietly slipped away.

The next fight came at Corinth three weeks later and Hebert’s sickness had returned.

General Van Dorn was at the head of the new Army of the West with Price his second-in-command. On the morning of Oct. 3 Hebert’s division was on the far left of the line and at 10 a.m. they attacked the Union soldiers in the old Confederate earthworks of the “Beauregard Line.” They easily pushed Gen. Thomas Davies’ understrength division from the works and later in the day were victorious again in the vicious fighting around the White House.

Sundown brought an end to the fighting with the Confederates a little more than half a mile from the rail crossing.

Van Dorn planned to follow up his success with an attack against Rosecrans’ inner line of defense. The assault would

Dawn came and went and there was no attack.

Van Dorn sent a messenger to Hebert to find out what the holdup was.

Hebert could not be found. A second and then a third messenger was sent; still no Hebert.

Finally a very ill Hebert walked into Van Dorn’s tent and announced he was too sick to lead the attack.

Was he faking it to get out of leading the attack?

Not Louis. This guy had bags of courage and was well known for the ferocity of his attacks. The sickness was most likely malaria and the extreme heat of the previous day had only made it worse.

Hebert was replaced by Brig. Gen. Martin Green, who led an attack that had limited initial success but ultimately ended in failure. The army retreated to Holly Springs and Hebert spent the next month and a half on sick leave.

He was well enough to assist in the fighting around Vicksburg the following spring, and it

was some of his troops who repulsed Grant’s attacks to take the city by storm. Then the sickness returned and he was bedridden when the city was surrendered.

Like the rest of the Southern army at Vicksburg, Hebert was paroled and was soon exchanged and ready to fight again.

And then his career took an unexpected turn.

Maj. Gen. William Whiting, one of the most accomplished engineers ever to graduate from West Point, needed Hebert’s skill in that field. He was sent to Wilmington, N.C., and assisted in the construction of the earthworks protecting that vital port, the last open port in the Confederacy. At the end of the war Hebert was the Chief Engineer of the Department of North Carolina.

He returned to Louisiana and in the hard times to follow he nearly lost the plantation and got by as teacher and newspaper editor. Fortune shined on Louis a final time when his old friend/adversary President Grant sent him a number of valuable engineering contracts in Louisiana and Texas. The family plantation was thus saved.

Louis Hebert died in 1901 and is buried in the family cemetery in Breaux Bridge in St. Martin’s Parish.

I’ve often wondered how the Battle of Corinth might have taken a different turn if that Louisiana wildcat had not fallen ill.

Who knows?

ACTC names Cook Rotary Student of the Month The Alcorn Career and Technology Center is pleased to announce that Colman Cook has been named the ACTC Rotary Student of the Month for April.

Colman, the son of Pete and Amanda Seago, is a senior at Kossuth High School. He is a second year student in the Polymer Science program at ACTC and was nominated for this honor by his Polymer Science instructor, Mrs. Stephanie Par-

sons.

At Kossuth High School, Colman is a member of the KHS Bowling League and Math and Science Club.

As a junior, he was chosen, by his peers, as Class Favorite. As a senior, he was chosen as Class Cutie, Most Humorous, and Most Changed. Colman performs well, academically, with a 3.72 GPA and scored 28 on the ACT. At the Alcorn Career

and Technology Center, he is a member of The Polymer Science Club and the National Technical Honor Society. He is also a Career Delegate at the ACTC and represents the school at public events. Colman has been a student of Polymer Science for the past two years and has become a valuable asset in that classroom. During his 11th grade year, Colman would attend one to three extra classes per week to

perform lab technician and lab assistant responsibilities for the class.

In November 2015, through Colman’s contributions as well as those of his teammates, ACTC Polymer Science won overall first place in the University of Southern Mississippi’s Polymer Science High School Competition.

Colman’s community activities iinclude the Plaza Lanes Bowling League, serving as a tu-

tor in math and science, and volunteering at the Northeast Mississippi WIN Job Fair. During June 2015, the ACTC Polymer Science Program held a Polymer Science High Tech Summer Camp for underprivileged children from our community and Colman served as a volunteer.

After graduation, Colman plans to attend the University of Mississippi and major in Chemical Engineering.

LINK celebrates visual arts with series of student projects Arts experiences have been popping up like Spring flowers this semester in third grade classes at elementary schools throughout Corinth and Alcorn County.

Thanks to LINK (Lead, Inspire, Nurture Kids), local artists and high school art teachers have brought fun and colorful visual art projects to the third graders.

Tony Bullard worked with students at Glendale and Kossuth Elementaries in January, teaching his techniques for adding depth and perspective to drawings with crayons.

Judith Lowery presented mandala drawings which were brightly decorated with colored markers by Biggersville and Rienzi third graders in February. Jennifer LeGoff and her Corinth High School art students visited Corinth Elementary School over a two day period in March. They coordinated their art project with the students’ weather unit and each student used oil pastels to produce vibrant shamrock inspired artwork on black paper.

Crystal Bryde, high school art teacher at Alcorn Central High School,

plans to visit Alcorn Central Elementary school third grade classes with her art students as well.

Documentary explores healing

The bride-elect is the daughter of Chuck and Annette Stringer of Corinth and Randy Mitchell of Petal. She is the granddaughter of Virginia Kemp Jones and the late Henry Jones of Corinth, Bart and Glenda Mitchell of Selmer, Tenn., Shermon and Nell Roberts of Union Grove, Ala. The prospective groom is the son of Nina and Jerry Arnold of Corinth.

The bride-elect is a 2006 graduate of Corinth High School. She received her Associates in Applied Health Sciences degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College in 2010. She is presently employed at MRHC where she works as a Respiratory Therapist.

The prospective groom is a 1998 graduate of Alcorn Central High School.

He is presently employed at Tull Brothers Inc. They will reside in Corinth.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Tain Gregory lost a friend in the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school. Jimmy Greene lost a daughter.

The role the arts have played in helping both on their journeys through grief and toward healing is explored in a “Midsummer in Newtown,” a documentary debuting on Sunday at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

The film follows the staging of “A Rockin’ Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, which was put on in Newtown

by Broadway professionals during the summer of 2014 using children from the community.

It focuses on two of the young local actors, Gregory and a girl named Sammy Vertucci, who find the play’s themes of love helping to restore order from chaos reflected in their own lives.

A separate track follows Greene as he creates his album “Beautiful Life,” to honor his daughter Ana Grace, while his wife, Nelba MarquezGreene, creates a foundation to help troubled children.

“It’s about people finding ways to move forward,” said director Lloyd Kramer.

The film is the second major documentary this year about the Newtown shooting, in which a gunman killed 20 schoolchildren, six educators, his mother and finally himself. The film “Newtown” premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. It also explores the effects of the events of that day on the community.

Marquez-Greene said they choose to be part of “Midsummer in Newtown” because it allowed them to tell their story the way they wanted it told. That includes a moment when she stops being angry at her husband, a well-known jazz saxo-

phonist, for not joining her as a political activist in Washington, D.C., pushing for new laws.

“It was very powerful for me when I heard his music to realize that this was not only his way to fight, but his way to continue to be a dad,” she said.

Filmmakers say they chose to debut the documentary at Tribeca because of the festival’s history. It was created in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks as a way for the arts to help heal the community in New York.

Sophfronia Scott Gregory, Tain’s mother, said she hopes people see her son come out of his shell in the film and understand the healing power the play had on her family.

For Tain, she said, being part of the production became a microcosm of his part in a community dealing with stress. He and others used the safe space of the theater community to overcome their fears, learn to trust and

be vulnerable again.

He cries when the production is over. His mother said that was a good thing, because it meant that he missed something he loved and began to understand feelings that went far beyond the play.

“It’s always OK to love,” she said. “Don’t be afraid of the pain. The pain is going to go away at some point, but the love is going to stay.”

Kramer said they were very careful in the film not to make it about closure, or good coming from evil or happy endings. Because, he said, the truth in Newtown is not that simplistic.

Instead, he said the movie is about the journey — what Jimmy Greene describes as a search to reflect love and beauty “through all the trauma and the horror that we’ve been through.”

“You can’t choose what happens to you in this life in a lot of ways, but you can choose how you respond to it,” Greene says near the movie’s end.

Sean Penn’s ‘Last Face’ competes at Cannes

PARIS — Sean Penn’s “The Last Face” about aid workers in Africa will compete at the Cannes Film Festival this year — along with movies about interracial marriage in 1950s America, illness and poverty in working class Britain, and cannibal fashion models in Los Angeles.

The festival’s high glamour yet socially conscious lineup, announced Thursday by organizers, features 49 films harking from 28 countries, including Iran, Brazil, Egypt, Israel and South Korea. Twenty of the entries will be running for the Palme d’Or, the top prize at the French Riviera festival, which is being held under heightened security after deadly Islamic extremist attacks on France and Belgium.

“Even though the festival takes place in France, it is not a French festival. It is an international festival,” said Cannes director Thierry Fremaux, who said the festival sifted through a recordbreaking 1,869 feature entries this year.

Top stars expected to grace the famed red carpet from May 11-22 include Marion Cotillard, Shia LaBeouf, Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster and George Clooney.

This edition — the festival’s 69th year — will also see the return of old Cannes favorites such as directors Pedro Almodovar, Ken Loach, Jim Jarmusch and the Dardenne brothers.

Like previous years, the 2016 Cannes festival has a markedly American flavor, and opens with Woody Allen’s 14th picture, the 1930s Hollywood film “Cafe Society,” starring Stewart and Eisenberg. It’s showing out of competition.

The interracial couple, played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, took their civil rights case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and won — affirming their right to marry.

Veteran British director Loach’s “I, Daniel Blake” looks at a working-class man in northern England struggling with poverty and injury.

Festival Director Thierry Fremaux joked that Loach had backtracked on his announcement that the 2014 film “Jimmy’s Hall” would be his last and called Loach’s 2016 entry his “final, final movie.”

Canadian director Xavier Dolan’s new entry, “It’s Only the End of the World,” about a dying author is the second time the rising star has been selected for the Palme d’Or shortlist. It stars Cotillard and Lea Seydoux.

In a mysterious reference to the Panama Papers offshore accounts leak, Fremaux said there might be a late entry from Panama “for those who follow current affairs.”

He did not elaborate.

Of the 20 films running for the top prize, three were made by women: Germany’s Maren Ade with “Toni Erdmann”; the U.K.’s Andrea Arnold with “American Honey,” starring LaBeouf; and France’s Nicole Garcia with “From the Land of the Moon,” starring Cotillard alongside Louis Garrel.

The festival has previously been criticized for its limited offerings of films by female directors.

For the first time there will be no closing film.

Instead the festival will rescreen the winning film as an “experiment,” Fremaux said.

The Cannes jury is led this year by “Mad Max” director George Miller.

Other jurors will be announced later.

Festival president Pierre Lescure said 500 security personnel were assigned to the festival and would be working with France’s national security authorities.

“The maximum has been done” to strike a balance between security and “ensuring that the festival remains a place of freedom,” Lescure said.
