Tour benefits house restoration BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
A busy weekend in downtown Corinth wrapped up on Saturday on the grounds of the Verandah-Curlee House. The eighth installment of the Home and Garden Tour featured something for everyone from home and garden information to a silent auction, basket weaving and a vintage carnival for kids. “We’ve had a wonderful event this year,” said event chair Stacy Brooks. “There were lots of other events going on this weekend, and I think we held our own pretty well.” The historic house was open for tours on Saturday. As
guides gave history lessons on the house, a gardening guru was entertaining more than 150 people outside. “Felder Rushing brought out a good crowd for us,” said Brooks of the retired Mississippi Extension Service horticulture specialist. “He gave everyone a different spin on gardening.” Rushing is known for his truck gardens planted in the bed of pickups. A garden planted in his father’s 1988 pickup has been driven more than 500,000 miles as he travels across the country. On Saturday, he brought it to Corinth. The tour also featured a
Rushing inspired Passalong Plant Sale of plants, flowers and seeds donated by local gardeners from their own gardens. Interior designer Tracy Proctor was the featured guest speaker on Friday. A vintage carnival gave organizers a chance to educate kids on the history of the house, as well. “Each game featured a card that told a little history about the house,” added Brooks. Proceeds from the Verandah-Curlee House Home and Garden Tour will benefit the continued restoration of the home. (Staff writer Jebb Johnston contributed to this story.)

People of the Crossroads
Program will put focus on diabetes prevention BY KIMBERLY SHELTON
Putting his knowledge of trivia to good use, Kossuth native Dan Marsh will gain the experience of a lifetime when he appears on the popular TV show “Jeopardy”. After receiving a phone call on March 10, the 37-year-old admits he initially thought it was a telemarketer and chose not to answer it. “I let it go to voicemail and finished the TV show I was watching – “Wolf Hall”. Then, when I checked the voicemail, I flipped out and called back immediately,” he said. “I got sent to voicemail. Then, finally,

Howard Tinsley is a long time volunteer of many things. He spent Saturday at the Verandah-Curlee House Home and Garden Tour volunteering his time with the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery’s silent art auction. Tinsley is also a Volunteer Field Representative for the Exchange Club, who provides schools with freedom signs and historical docu ments. “I love to volunteer,” he said. “It gives me something to do.” The Oklahoma native has called the Pickwick area home since 2007. When asked about his age, the 80-year-old said, “I’m 79 and progressing.” Tinsley’s son Ray is a featured artist and photographer at the local artist gallery.
tion, the program will feature an approach that is proven to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and includes: a trained lifestyle coach, CDC approved curriculum, 16 weekly group meetings and six months of follow-up meetings. “This program is being done in key locations/extension offices across the state,” said Moore. “The results are extremely valuable to the CDC because they can use the data to determine what they can do to better serve the public in the prevention of Please see DIABETES | 2A
