Panel recommends zoning corrections BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
When the city tightened downtown zoning regulations last year, it inadvertently left a few types of businesses with nowhere to go. The city planning commis-
sion is recommending a correction to make car washes, laundromats and several other types of businesses legal again. Last March, the Central Business District was renamed to the Downtown Business District as zoning regulations were
updated to reflect the changing nature of downtown over time. “Initially, everything that happened, happened downtown,” said Dave Huwe, community development and planning director. Now, a car wash is not
deemed appropriate in the city’s downtown. But those types of businesses that were eliminated from C-3 zoning did not get added to the allowed types of businesses in C-2 zoning, and that’s where the problem arose. “What we’re adding back into

The Corinth Street Department will work with an employment agency to fill some of its labor needs. The Board of Aldermen on Monday gave approval for the street department to contract with Wise Staffing Services. Street Commissioner Philip Verdung said it will serve several purposes, including offsetting the downturn in inmate worker availability and providing short-term workers as needed occasionally. Also, it’s difficult for his department to maintain a pool of applicants, and using an employment agency will address that issue. The board also approved the hiring of two laborers for the sanitation department. In other items before the board in Monday’s special meeting, aldermen approved the police department’s purchase of a used 2005 GMC box truck to house special response team equipment and surplussed a 1994 police department van.

A lively weekend in Corinth includes the return of the Magnolia Classic Racking Horse Show. The majestic animals, known for a single-foot gait, will be at Crossroads Arena beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday. Formerly an annual event, it is back for the first time since 2008. Organizer Michelle Glidewell believes it has been missed and hopes to see the return get a warm reception. “It’s just a different type of horse than what people are used to,” she said. “It’s a classy type of horse versus a quarter horse or rodeo horse.” And it’s an inexpensive, family-friendly event. Admission is $7 with children under 6 admitted free. Twenty-seven classes are set to show, with prize money to be awarded to the top three in each class. Ribbons go to the top five in each class. As the first points show of the year, Glidewell believes it should draw a good crowd of participants. The Magnolia Classic is affiliated with the Racking Horse Breeders Association of America. Glidewell hopes to see the event return to the calendar as
