Sales tax up; tourism tax down BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Sales tax proceeds rose for a second consecutive month while tourism tax collections had a modest decrease in the latest results. Funds returned to municipali-

ties by the Mississippi Department of Revenue at mid-March reflect sales activity in local businesses during the month of January. Corinth’s share of sales tax revenue totaled $399,876,05, a 6 percent gain compared to the same month a year earlier, but the

overall trend of nearly flat results continues. The year-to-date total of $2.67 million is 1 percent ahead of the same point in the prior fiscal year. The city’s monthly result was on par with the state trend. Municipalities across the state received

a total of $28.79 million, a 7 percent gain in year-to-year comparisons. That was also reflected in the northeast region with nine of 11 municipalities posting gains. The 2 percent tourism tax on prepared food and lodging in Corinth generated $78,637.28,

down about $5,000, or 6 percent, from a year earlier. This month’s total is down from what was a record for the month a year earlier. For the year to date, the tourism tax has generated $497,700.58, Please see COLLECTIONS | 2A

FARMINGTON — Eugene Thomas doesn’t like sitting at home. The 72-year-old prefers to stay busy. Thomas does find something to do six days a week, peddling vegetables from a small table off

Farmington Road just West of Corinth. “I will be here until it gets so cold that I can’t stand it,” he said while giving his patented wave to passing motorists. Thomas and his wife, Jane, moved to the area from Starkville four years ago to be closer to their daughter, Teresa McIntosh, and

three grandchildren. For the past four years, the retired Methodist preacher and Holnam Cement Plant worker has assumed his usual spot near Jimmy Burcham’s shop on Farmington Road. His small table and truck are filled with Please see WAVE | 2A

Local residents can watch soldiers pack up and prepare to march to Shiloh on Thursday at the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center. Breakfast is part of the event, as well. As part of the sesquicentennial anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Shiloh, a group of Confederate reenactors will set up camp on the bottom tier of the interpretive center grounds Wednesday evening. The camps will be open to the public from 6 until 8 p.m. The next morning, members of the public can have breakfast with the troops beginning at 7 a.m. The soldiers will begin their journey at 8 a.m. While there is a fee for the breakfast, the public is invited to view the event at no charge. Breakfast orders need to be placed with Museum Director Brandy Steen by Monday. The cost is $5 per person or free for children under 16 and $3 for people over 50. The cost is to be paid at the event. Steen is expecting much enthusiasm for the send-off. “It’s going to be a once in most of our lifetimes event,”

she said. Tourism Director Kristy White said more than 140 reenactors have signed on to participate. “This is an independent event not affiliated with either reenactment at Shiloh,” she said. “When they arrive at their destination, some will go to each reenactment, and some are not participating in the reenactments.” Following as closely as possible the route that soldiers actually took during the war, the reenactors will march from the interpretive center with a police escort, heading to Michie, Tenn., and then to Shiloh. The reenactors will receive ration bags containing two biscuits, two cornbread muffins, two corns on the cob, two apples, peanuts and about four pieces of cured pork. The breakfast includes one each of a biscuit, pastry and drink. Choose ham, sausage or bacon biscuit; honey bun, cherry/cream cheese Danish or cinnamon roll; and juice, coffee, water or Coke. It’s a Texas-sized show for the whole family. The Lone Star Rodeo continues at 7 p.m. tonight at Crossroads Arena. The Lone Star Rodeo Company is a family-oriented business that has provided “the best in western-style family entertainment” for 63 years. Lone Star Rodeo producer and owner Preston Fowlkes Jr. emphasized his rodeo is run by his family for other families.

“I’m the second generation Fowlkes in this rodeo. My son, Preston Fowlkes III, will take over when I quit doing it. We keep our family involved. My 4-year-old granddaughter Oralee rides a little red and white paint pony — it’s cute as a button,” said Fowlkes. “Her 9-yearold brother, Cutter Madison, drives steers and calves out.” Running a rodeo the family way has been part of Fowlkes’ life as long as he remembers. The company was founded by his father, Preston Fowlkes Sr., who

left the rodeo to his son upon his death in 1976. “I grew up in the rodeo. Ours is a family rodeo, so there won’t be anything said or done at this rodeo that would embarrass your family. I don’t put up with it,” he said. “You didn’t bring your family here to hear somebody be ugly.” The rodeo will feature bareback bronc riding, calf roping, cowgirl breakaway roping, steer wrestling, team roping, cowgirl

apples, oranges, tomatoes, onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes. “People right now are wanting tomatoes and sweet potatoes,” said Thomas, who worked at the Artesia cement plant for 23 years. He arrives at daybreak and stays at his spot until about 4 p.m. “If it’s not raining, I’m here six days a week,” he said while continuing to

wave at those passing by. The former preacher picks up his supplies in Pontotoc. He treks to the Mississippi town once or twice a week depending on how business is going. “I needed something to do,” he said as the reason to set up his vegetable stand. “When you go home, sit down and don’t do anything, you will be dead before you know it.” The 72-year-old will also keep on waving to motorists passing by.

“I got in the habit of doing that 14 years ago,” he said. “It’s hard not to stop now.” Most will wave back or blow their horn at the Glen resident. Some will also stop in to do some business. Thomas is set to load up and head back to his location today if the weather permits. “As long as I’m able, I will keep coming,” he said. “But when you are 72, you never know.”

Son’s inattention threatens mom’s contact with grandchild DEAR ABBY: My handsome, 21-yearold son, “Dylan,” has a beautiful girlfriend and a 14-month-old child. They have been together for three years. Dylan works out of town. He gets back late on Friday afternoons and leaves again on Sunday afternoon. The problem is, he goes to bed soon after he gets home and then goes out on Saturday, returning at about 2 a.m. or so Sunday morning. He spends very little time with his girlfriend and their child. Otherwise, he's good to them, provides a good home and most things they need. But he doesn't give them attention or love. I'm afraid Dylan's girlfriend is getting fed up with this. She's a good “wife” and a wonderful mother, but if she leaves, I'm afraid I won't get to see my grandchild. Please tell me what to do. Mrs. Daugherty died Thursday, March 22, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was retired from Genesco and was owner and operator of Daugherty Refrigeration and Daugherty Rentals. She was a member of Iuka Baptist Church. Reed Kuykendall

Funeral services for Reed H. Kuykendall, 90, are set for 3 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Union Cemetery. Mr. Kuykendall, a retired machinist, died Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Desoto. He was born April 15, 1921, to the late Ruben and Elsie Kuykendall. He graduated from Kossuth High School and served with the 8th Air Force, 306th Bomb Group, 367th Squadron during WWII. He was a tail gunner, having hisplane shot down, and he was a prisoner of war for 16 months. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lou Morton Kuykendall; his parents; two brothers; and one sister. Survivors include his sons, Joe Reed Kuykendall (Darlene) of Southaven and Keith Kuykendall (Vicki) of Olive Branch; a brother, Grady Kuykendall (Betty) of Corinth; grandchildren Courtney Kirton, Joey Kuykendall and Sindy Abadie; and four greatgrandchildren. The Alcorn County 4-H Shooting Sports Club is teaming with Daisy & Tractor Supply Company to promote youth development today from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Tractor Supply Company. Daisy’s portable air rifle range will be set up for youngsters to take part in target shooting. Certified instructors with 4-H along with members will be present to share more about the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Letter to the Editor Keep Corinth Beautiful applauds city leadership for cleanup efforts To the editor: The Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful Board would like to show public appreciation to the Corinth Mayor and Board of Aldermen for their continued work in addressing unsightly existing conditions — dilapidated housing, junk cars and other blights — that bring negative impact throughout our community. Planning for future growth, change and revitalization of our community is dependent on the leaders and residents. This issue cannot be stressed enough. We appreciate our city leaders for continued focus on desired future conditions in our community. These will align us for economic growth and give environmental benefits to preserve our community. We look forward to continued support of community efforts to correct and revitalize areas. Other Views Proposed eduction bills are good for schools; All three need to pass Three bills working their way through the Mississippi Senate offer encouraging news for Mississippi schools and school children. The first would allow all school districts to appoint superintendents. Of the state’s 152 school districts, 64 county districts have elected superintendents. All of the city districts in Mississippi have appointed superintendents. While we mean no criticism of incumbent elected superintendents — the system of elected superintendents has in some cases yielded good leadership — an appointed system would broaden the field of choices for school districts and put the responsibility on the backs of school board members. ... Senate Education Chairman Gray Tollison, R-Oxford, also said some people who would make good superintendents don’t want to run for office, and in some cases, elected superintendents and school boards who don’t get along can end up in a standoff that hurts the district. The bill originally sought to end elections in all districts. An amendment to let voters petition by Jan. 1, 2015 to keep elections was added. We also like a Senate bill that would change the way districts are rated to a system everyone understands. Instead of star, high performing, successful, academic watch, at risk of failing and failing, schools would be graded just as they grade the children they’re responsible for educating. Districts would get one of six letter grades: A, B, C, D, D- and F. Another bill would make it easier for districts not to renew contracts of superintendents. By denying legal hearings for non-renewed superintendents, the bill would spare school districts legal costs associated with such. ... The bills now move to the House where they may be modified. We urge the House to pass these three bills. They are good for Mississippi schools and school children. The Commercial Dispatch, Columbus

Sad plight of Obama’s Edsel President Barack Obama says he wants to buy a Chevy Volt when he’s out of office in five years. If getting into a General Motors electric automobile means so much to him, he’d better hope he loses in November. What the president dubbed the “car of the future” in a visit to a Volt plant may not make it to January 2017. The partially government-owned General Motors has suspended production of its government-approved miracle car and temporarily laid off 1,300 workers at a Detroit plant. The halt is the result of a piddling detail lost in the gushers of praise for a big, bad car company supposedly learning the error of its environmentdestroying ways — people don’t want to buy the damn thing. GM hoped to sell 10,000 Volts last year and only sold 7,500. It planned to sell 45,000 this year and is scaling back production to meet the real rather than the imaginary demand. The Volt is the Solyndra of automobiles, another Obama-touted recipient of

government subsidies that was succeeding as a great paladin of the future in all Rich the speeches and press reLowery leases until it National ran into hard Review market realities. The Volt is too expensive, too small and too complicated to appeal to all but a tiny slice of what is already a tiny segment of the car market. Hybrids have never been more than about 3 percent of all U.S. sales. To buy a Volt, you need the money to splurge and the exquisite environmental consciousness to think plugging in your car will help save the planet, even though about half of electricity comes from coal. The Volt is as much affectation as car. It costs more than $40,000. At that price, perhaps GM should have made it part of the Cadillac brand rather than Chevy. Most buyers dropping that much prefer to go all the way and

buy something really nice — say, an Audi or a BMW. According to GM, the average income of a Volt purchaser is $175,000 a year. These well-heeled buyers get a $7,500 tax credit for selecting a car out of reach of many Americans, a trickle-up redistribution toward the upper, politically correct end of the car market. It’s not that the Volt isn’t a fine piece of machinery. It is a smooth ride and has been well-reviewed. It’s just not going “to make Big Oil sweat,” in the words of a smitten writer for The New York Times. Big Oil presumably has other things to worry about than a rounding error in the more than 12 million vehicles sold in the U.S. every year. As Henry Payne of The Detroit News argues, the Chevy Volt is basically the electric version of the gaspowered Chevy Cruze. Despite the Environmental Protection Agency’s rating that the Volt gets 60 miles per gallon, as a practical matter it’s more like 35 (it can go less than 40 miles on battery alone and then needs to switch over to gas).

That’s comparable to the Cruze, which costs half the amount, has greater range, seats more people and is easier to operate since all it requires is a visit to the filling station. GM sells more than 200,000 Cruzes a year. The Volt is looking like Obama’s Edsel. What the president so confidently deems “the future” when he talks of energy and cars is his ideological vision dressed up in the language of historical inevitability. If he had been told in 2009 that the real future of the car market would be trucks, SUVs and the like, which again ticked above half of sales, he surely would have blanched. If he had been told that technological breakthroughs would bring a future of new oil production, he would have been no less insistent on funding the likes of Solyndra. For all his smug confidence about his vision of the future, he doesn’t truly know what car he will be driving in five years. If he stays true to his word, it might have to be a secondhand Volt.

Toulouse: Dark side of diversity As an act of pure evil it was difficult to match. After dragging the 8-yearold by her hair across a schoolyard, the killer put a 9 mm pistol to the girl’s head and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed. So he took out a Colt .45 and finished her. She was one of four victims. The others — a 30-year-old rabbi and his two boys. As the gunman had targeted a Jewish school and the bullets were identical to those used in the murders of two North African soldiers and one black soldier, suspicion fell on some neoNazi racist. And in France’s tight presidential campaign, left and center moved swiftly to exploit the atrocities by charging the French right with creating an atmosphere in which such racist horrors can occur. “Killings Could Stall Election’s Nationalist Turn,” ran the New York Times headline. The debate over whether the murders were “inspired by antiimmigrant political talk is likely to continue,” wrote the Times’ Steve Erlanger, “both as a weapon in the presidential campaign and as a more general soulsearching about the nature of France.” French President Nicolas Sarkozy was thrown on the defensive. These murders, said centrist candidate Francois Bayrou, “because of their origin, of the religion of their family,” are linked “to a growing climate of intol-

To point the finger at one or another according to their origins is to inflame passions, and we do it because in that flame there are votes to get.” The massacre at the Jewish school and the murders of Muslim and black soldiers, said the head of France’s Council of Muslim Democrats, “are a strong signal sent to politicians and, more particularly, to those who, for several months, have played with fire.” And who had “played with fire”? Sarkozy and Marine Le Pen, candidate of the rightist National Front. Sarkozy has been toughening his stance on immigration and national identity. In a March 7 debate, he said that there are “too many foreigners” in France and that assimilation is “working worse and worse.” He pledged to cut immigration in half. Last summer, Sarkozy sought to deport Gypsies who had overstayed their visas. In echo of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he has called multiculturalism a failure. He has spoken of revising the Schengen agreement, which lets residents of the

European Union travel freely across borders. He has denounced burqas and facial veils worn by Muslim women. Boys and girls, he says, should swim together, a practice intolerable to devout Muslims. With his rightward move to siphon votes from Le Pen, Sarkozy had surged into a tie with Socialist Francois Hollande. So it was that the left leapt with alacrity upon the massacre to charge that Sarkozy’s new populism had created the climate in which such horrors against Jews and Muslims can occur. So it was that the Times concluded that the nationalist turn in French politics might be halted, as it had in Norway after berserker Anders Breivik slaughtered scores of children last year. What was happening should be readily recognizable to Americans. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated by a Marxist in Dallas, the Goldwater right was charged with creating an atmosphere of hate that had made it likelier to happen there. When Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot by a crazed gunman who wounded a dozen others and slaughtered six, moral responsibility was laid at the feet of Sarah Palin. Unfortunately for the French left, however, by Wednesday, the mass murderer had been identified as a homegrown Salafist jihadi and self-styled member of al-Qaida who had spent time in Afghanistan and Pakistan and been under

surveillance for years by French intelligence. Mohamed Merah was seeking revenge against Jews for the deaths of Palestinian children and against French soldiers for fighting in Afghanistan. Le Pen seized on the news to blast the left, which had sought to blame the atrocities on her, and charged the French government with underestimating the Islamist threat and being lax on national security. “It is time to wage war on these fundamentalist political religious groups who are killing our children,” she said. “The threat of Islamic fundamentalism has been underestimated. ... (I) have been talking about this for months and months, and the political class has rejected (me). Some are going to have difficulty explaining themselves, but I have a clear conscience.” With the killer precisely the type of individual the French right has said bears watching, Bayrou was hastily backtracking: Politicians must “tackle the risk of importing into French society conflicts that are foreign to us or should be foreign to us.” As Europe’s native citizens age and die and immigration goes on and on — with 5 million Muslims already in France — issues of national identity will bedevil Europe, even as they will bedevil us, forever. In Toulouse we see clearly now not only the dark side of diversity but perhaps the future of the West.

Judge tosses lawsuit on MLK documents BY HOLBROOK MOHR Associated Press

JACKSON — A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit filed by the estate of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. seeking documents and other material connected to the civil rights leader from a Mississippi TV anchor. The lawsuit was filed in September in U.S. District Court in Jackson against Howard Ballou, an anchor for Jackson-based WLBTTV. The suit said Ballou’s mother worked for King as a secretary from 1955 to 1960 and kept documents

during the time King led the Montgomery Improvement Association and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In dismissing the lawsuit, U.S. District Judge Tom Lee said there was nothing to contradict Maude Ballou’s testimony that King gave her the material. Lee dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it can’t be refiled. The King estate could appeal the ruling. “Mrs. Ballou could not recall whether she was also given originals of some documents, but she made clear in her testimo-

ny that the documents she personally kept were those that Dr. King gave to her personally, to keep,” the judge wrote. “Plaintiff has offered no proof to contradict or undermine Mrs. Ballou’s testimony.” Jackson attorney Bob Owens said he was disappointed with the ruling and is “certain that the estate is going to appeal” to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The documents described in court records include a sermon; a statement King made the day after a landmark Supreme

Court ruling on segregation; and a handwritten letter to Ballou’s mother from civil rights icon Rosa Parks. Asked the value of the documents, the estate’s attorney said they haven’t been catalogued, but are “invaluable to the estate.” Ballou argued in court papers that his parents were personal friends of King, and his father and King were fraternity brothers. He insisted the letters, photographs and other items were gifts and rightfully belong to his family.

The judge threw out the lawsuit after Ballou moved for a summary judgment, a legal ruling based on statements and evidence submitted to the court without a trial. In this case, Ballou’s lawyer had argued that the facts are simple and that the material belongs to his family. The judge agreed. Ballou’s attorney, Robert Gibbs of Jackson, said he spoke to Howard and Maude Ballou on Friday and they were both excited about the ruling. “We don’t know what

the other side’s intent is,” Gibbs said. “Until there is an appeal, Howard can do what he wants with the documents because the court clearly said they belong to him.” King’s estate, a Georgia corporation operated as a private company by his children, had argued in court records that the motion for summary judgment was premature. The estate wanted the motion to be denied or continued until the parties conduct discovery, in which the King material could be studied and catalogued.

WASHINGTON — Charges filed Friday against Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales reflect the horror of the crime: 17 counts of premeditated murder, more than half of them children, during a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan. But while Afghans are calling for swift and severe punishment, it will likely be months, even years, before the public ever gets to see Bales in a courtroom. One only has to look at two recent and similarly high-profile cases to see that the wheels of military justice turn slowly. It’s been nearly 29 months since an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan, allegedly killed 13 and injured two dozen more at Fort Hood, Texas. His trial is scheduled to begin in June. And it’s been 21 months since the military charged intelligence analyst Bradley Manning with leaking hundreds of thousands of pages of classified information. It took nine months before he was deemed competent to stand trial. The Bales case is likely to be equally complex, involving questions of his mental state and the role that the stresses of war and possible previous head injuries may have played in his alleged actions. Most of the eyewitnesses are the Afghan villagers and survivors who may be brought in for the trial. The military on Friday charged Bales with 17 counts of murder, six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault in the March 11 predawn massacre in two southern Afghanistan villages near his base. The father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., was officially informed of the 29 charges just before noon at the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he is confined. The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death, dishonorable discharge from the armed forces, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade and

total forfeiture of pay and allowances, according to Col. Gary Kolb, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole. The charges offered few details of what happened that night. But the 38-year-old soldier is accused of walking off his base with his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher, killing four men, four women, two boys and seven girls and burning some of the bodies. The ages of the children were not disclosed. In the most detailed descriptions of the shootings to date, the charges say Bales shot a young girl in the head, a young boy in the thigh, a man in the neck and a woman in the chest and groin. The documents also say that he “shot at” another girl and boy, but apparently did not hit them. The attack occurred in the Panjwai district of Kandahar Province, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban. The dead bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages — one north and one south of the base. Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leaving the base at 2:30 a.m. It’s unknown whether the Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier. If the gunman acted alone, information from the Afghan guards would suggest that he returned to base in between the shooting rampages. It also is not known whether the suspect used grenades, Kolb said. The grenade launcher attachment is added to the standard issue M-4 rifle for some soldiers but not all, he said. Bales was assigned to provide force protection at the base. The case against him is the worst allegation of killing of civilians by an Ameri-

can in Afghanistan and has severely strained U.S.-Afghan ties at a critical time in the decade-old war. Not addressed in the charges are suggestions that Bales may have been drinking. On Friday, a senior U.S. defense official said Bales was drinking in the hours before the attack on Afghan villagers, violating a U.S. military order banning alcohol in war zones. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the charges before they were filed. U.S. officials, however, have said that additional charges could be filed as time goes on. Bales’ civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday the government will have a hard time proving its case and that his client’s mental state will be an important issue. Bales was on his fourth tour of duty, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered head and foot injuries. The charges set in motion what will likely be a lengthy military justice process. “Usually in military and civilian criminal cases, delay accrues to the benefit of the accused. So there will be some maneuvering to put it off a while,” said Gary Solis, retired Marine prosecutor and adjunct law professor at Georgetown University. “I think it’s many months before we’re going to see this thing go to trial, if it ever goes to trial.” Bales may face what the military calls a “sanity board,” to determine his mental state at the time, and whether he is competent to stand trial. Since Bales was assigned to a unit based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state — the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division — the charges were sent Friday to a special courtmartial convening authority, the 17th Fires Brigade, an artillery unit at the post. Lewis-McChord spokesman Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield said officials at the post will have the legal responsibility of trying and managing the case against Bales, but it was not clear where the proceedings would actually take place.

Lions Gate Entertainment seized a pot of gold. When the film and television production company bought Summit Entertainment in January, the deal brought bankable teen franchises “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight” under one roof. Midnight screenings of the first of four “Hunger Games” films broke the record for a non-sequel early Friday. And the “Twilight” finale is set for release in November. These two movies could generate nearly $450 million in profit combined, estimates Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz. The adventures of bow-wielding Katniss mean 6 to 7 years of higher earnings, Creutz says, adding that Lions Gate may post its first profit in five years when its fiscal year ends in March. More than two-thirds of revenue comes from the movie business, so its first blockbuster means a lot.

It has been getting by with staples like Tyler Perry comedies and the “Saw” horror series. Lions Gate produces the TV show “Mad Men,” which kicks off its fifth season Sunday. Although the company doesn’t reap ad revenue from a hit TV show, success with audiences keeps it in demand as a production company. Plus there’s another show in the hopper: Charlie Sheen’s “Anger Management,” which debuts in June. A rise in Lions Gate stock prior to “The Hunger Games” release wasn’t surprising given the huge buzz surrounding it. The stock is up 75 percent this year, closing at $14.53 Friday. Although several analysts expect the price to reach $15 or higher, it may be unwise to jump in. Evercore analyst Alan Gould downgraded the stock to “Equal-Weight,” stating that most of the positives are now reflected in the stock.

KOSSUTH — Six singles and seven goose eggs kept Kossuth atop the Division 1-3A standings. Tyler Nelms tossed a threehit shutout and six different Aggies had singles as Kossuth blanked Ripley 3-0 in league action on Friday. Kossuth (10-3, 2-0) won its second straight game after concluding spring break action on a two-game slide. John Mitchell, David Gibson, Blake Nethery, Jacob Wilcher, Tyler Mercer and Jordan Brawner each had a single in the winning effort. Kossuth broke a scoreless tie

with a run in the fifth, then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Kossuth travels to Oxford today for a 2 o’clock contest. ■ At Jesse Bynum Field, Shannon hung a five-spot in the fifth and held on to beat Corinth 12-10 in Division 1-4A action. Corinth (5-10, 0-2) got 22 runners on base via hit or walk, but stranded 15 in losing the home-and-home series. Shannon claimed an 8-7 win on its home field on Tuesday. Tuesday starter Austin Saylors recorded the one-pitch save, getting a force out after Corinth got the winning run

to the plate with two outs in the seventh. Three Shannon pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts. Jalen Kirk paced Corinth’s 13-hit attack with his second four-knock game of the season. Jacob McDuffy had three hits, including a two-run single that got Corinth to within 12-10 after five innings. Lew Johnson drew three of Corinth’s nine walks, including a pair of intentional passes. Osiris Copeland finished the night 0-for-5 with five strikeouts. Corinth returns to action Tuesday when it plays host to 1-4A foe Pontotoc.

Mularkey: Jags wanted Tebow Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey insists he wanted quarterback Tim Tebow. Speaking before a fan event Thursday night, Mularkey indicated that reports saying otherwise were false. “Don’t believe everything you hear or read in the media,” Mularkey said. “It’s hard not to want a guy like that. We wouldn’t have tried to trade for him if we didn’t feel like we didn’t want to have him here. There were a lot of things that went into this thing to try to get Tim to come here. “In the long run, it did not work out. But if you do not want a player, you don’t even get involved with it.” There were reports that Jacksonville’s front office and coaching staff didn’t really want Tebow. Owner Shahid Khan certainly did, telling general manager Gene Smith to explore a trade for the polarizing quarterback. The Jaguars offered a fourth-round draft pick for Tebow, but the former Florida star ended up going to the New York Jets for two picks. So if the Jaguars really wanted Tebow, who grew up in Jacksonville, why not give up a third-round pick? “That’s confidential,” he said. “The draft is how you build a football team and that’s what we’re going to continue to do. That’s been the philosophy of this franchise; that’s my philosophy. You’ve got to be very careful what you start doing with draft picks and we feel strongly about the draft.” Mularkey said internal talk about acquiring Tebow included him coming in as a backup QB.

Northeast Head Coach Ricky Smither and the Tigers will get a jump start on the 2012 football season when they begin spring practice on Monday. KOSSUTH — A lead-off triple supplied Kossuth with the only run it would need. Eryn Coleman began the bottom of the first with a three-bagger, then promptly scored on a throwing error as Kossuth blanked rival Alcorn Central 1-0 on Friday. “We’ve lost a pair of 1-0 games this year, it’s good to win one,” said Kossuth Head Coach Steve Lyles. Carleigh Mills, who bumped her record to 4-3, and Alcorn Central’s Chelsea Buntin dominated the rest of the Division 1-3A matchup.

Mills allowed a pair of singles while Buntin held Kossuth to just two singles after Coleman’s game-opening triple. Kossuth evened its mark at 6-6 overall with its second straight win. The Lady Aggies moved to 2-0 in league play after opening with a 14-2 win at Ripley. Central dropped to 4-6, 0-2. Both of the Lady Bears’ league losses have been by one run. ■ The Lady Aggies scored 12 unanswered runs in Tuesday’s game after the Lady Tigers knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
