The race for Alcorn County’s Mississippi State Senate representative gained an experienced candidate this week. Democrat Eric Powell filed his letter of intent on Thursday
for the District 4 Senate seat. He will challenge Republican incumbent Rita Potts Parks. Powell held the same position for one term before being unseated by Potts four years ago. Friday was a busy final day of qualifying at the Alcorn County
Circuit Clerk’s office. Five new candidates turned in qualified for local posts. Republican candidate David Nunley officially declared he will vie for the highly contested Alcorn County sheriffs race. Ben Caldwell also filed Friday
as an independent for sheriff. The duo joins former police chief Ned Cregeen (D), David Derrick (D), Mike LaRue (D), Keith Settlemires (D), current constable Roger Voyles (D) and Billy Clyde Burns (Independent).
